Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia have had one of the craziest rivalries in the Gulf World it all started back in 1999 when a fresh-faced 19-year-old Sergio Garcia burst onto the scene quickly earning a reputation as the next big thing he was all set to take on the top player Tiger Woods and that started a fiery competition that we couldn’t get enough of but how did it all even start this is the truth behind why Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia hate each other let’s start by going way back to the 1999 PGA Championship Sergio was all fired up and ready to show he was a force to be reckoned with not just another name in the crowd he said I wanted him to know that I was still there and that he had to finish well to win even though he was a few shots behind tiger he pulled off this incredible no look shot on the 16th hole that had everyone shocked seriously it was something else but but as fate would have it it wasn’t Sergio’s day to shine tiger in typical tiger fashion was just unbeatable edging out a win by just one stroke despite the setback you’ve got to give it to Sergio he showed real sportsmanship hugging tiger after the match despite his disappointment it was intense and believe it or not that was just the start of their legendary rivalry sure they hugged for the camera at the end but they knew that they’d be going up against against each other very soon but the next time they played against each other Woods wasn’t so lucky battle at Big Horn on August 28th 2000 Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia faced off in a prime time TV event called the battle at Big Horn set up by Tiger sponsors IMG this match marked a significant moment in their growing rivalry for Garcia it was a golden opportunity to defeat tiger and he did winning $1 million by beating him by one stroke despite his victory tiger wasn’t at his best battling the flu during the match yet challenging tiger in such a dominant year was still a big deal for Garcia then Garcia had another shot at Tiger at the 2002 US Open but tiger was in top form leading the whole way there was some drama too Garcia complained about the usga’s decisionmaking suggesting they’d have stopped play if tiger were struggling with the weather the fans reacted strongly when they heard about his comments this incident added another layer of tension between the two golfers the atmosphere was further intensified by the New York crowd known for its vocal and sometimes unforgiving nature Garcia became the focus of their attention and not in a favorable way he was heckled by fans throughout the tournament particularly for his habit of frequent regripping or waggling before shots this led to a notorious incident where he made an obscene gesture to the crowd further fueling the antagonism he faced in the end he was paired with tiger in the final round where tiger won his eighth major after the match Sergio said it was rough out there but I’m glad it happened he said it matured me a lot in 2006 at the Open Championship the spotlight was again on Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia tiger was playing with a heavy heart after his dad’s pass Garcia known for his vibrant personality chose to wear a bright yellow outfit for the final round this bold fashion statement made him stand out but unfortunately his performance didn’t match it even though he was neck and neck with tiger going into the last round he stumbled a bit and ended up tied for fifth while tiger went on to win at this point Garcia’s presence on the course was almost like a running joke for Tiger who had already racked up 11 major WI WIS while Garcia was still chasing his first and to add insult to injury tiger didn’t hold back in celebrating his win over Garcia even texting a friend that he just bludgeoned Tweety Bird damn that’s got to stay but Garcia wasn’t one to back down especially when it came to tiger in 2013 the ongoing feud between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia flared up dramatically at the Players Championship at TPC Saw Grass things escalated ated quickly after an incident where Garcia accused tiger of distracting him by pulling a club just as he was about to swing this led to Garcia messing up his shot and later blaming tiger he didn’t see that I was ready uh but you you do have a feel when the other guy is going to hit and right as I was on top of the back swing I think he must have he pulled like a fivewood or three wood out of the ra and obviously everybody started screaming so that didn’t help very much tiger being tiger didn’t hold back in his response B basically calling Garcia out for being a complainer but here’s where it gets messy the incident sparked a lot of back and forth in the media with Sergio openly complaining and tiger dismissing the accusations as the Marshall’s stories didn’t quite line up even with all the drama Garcia was in the final group on Sunday poised for a major win but in a twist of fate he spectacularly fell apart on the last few holes hitting the water three times his meltdown started on the his 17th hole where his t- shot fell short and went into the water instead of playing it safe from the Drop Zone he tried again from the tea only to find the water once more the crowd loved every minute of it especially as he continued to struggle on the 18th hole meanwhile tiger was steady managing to secure his fourth win of the year on a course that had often challenged him so after the whole mess at the Players Championship Garcia really went on the defensive he even even admitted to being a bit of a complainer but then turned around and accused tiger of lying really throwing some shade his way when the media asked tiger if he was ready to make up with Garcia his Flatout no was as straightforward as it gets and the media just loved it adding even more drama but then things got awkward during an interview when asked if he’d ever have tiger over for dinner Garcia’s answer was incredibly insensitive he made a joke about serving or fried chicken yeah not cool especially considering the racial undertones and bringing back memories of fuzzy Z’s Infamous comment at the Masters back in 97 he’s doing quite well pretty impressive little boy’s uh driving it well he’s putting well he’s doing everything it takes to win so you know what you guys do when he gets in here Pat him on the back say congratulations enjoy it and tell him about to serve Fried Chicken next year got it Garcia realized pretty quickly that he’d stepped Over The Line and issued a bunch of apologies trying to make amends for his thoughtless comment but the damage was already done and tiger quite understandably wasn’t going to just brush it off amid the media frenzy that followed tiger publicly denounced Garcia’s comment as wrong hurtful and inappropriate but then he did what he does best focused on his game and left the offcourse drama behind at the 2013 US Open the tension between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia was still palpable though not as explosive as their confrontation at the Players Championship earlier that year at the Marian Golf Club the two had a brief encounter Garcia approached Tiger Woods on the practice range and shook his hand which seemed like an attempt to move toward reconciliation after their recent disputes and Garcia’s controversial comments it was a step in the right direction showing that maybe they could put the pass behind them and you know what Garcia seemed to realize crossed the line he started talking about tiger with more respect and woods even acknowledged his major win at the 2017 masters with a congratulatory tweet it was a moment of closure maybe even a bit of redemption for both of them but let’s not forget there’s always been this underlying frustration for Garcia this feeling of being overshadowed by Tiger’s dominance he once joked about it wondering what life would have been like if he hadn’t been racing against Tiger’s Unstoppable Force now with tiger taking a step back from the spotlight and
