I’m Bryson Des Shambo Bryson Des Shambo no stranger to the criticism that he gets from fellow pros and I am the golfing scientist this is what makes him the most interesting player in the game today and doesn’t mean we all can’t make the game of golf better for everyone in the world and that’s the tough part is getting people to see who I truly am compared to what the tour represent or puts me out to be as it’s hard to overstate just how much golf hated Bryson to Shambo we all point to his dramatic win over Rory mroy as the moment it turned around but that was his second US Open Victory Bryson’s transformation is unusual normally winning solves everything but clearly that wasn’t the case here if that were true his script would have flip back in 2020 when he won the US Open by a commanding six Strokes golf is rooted heavily in its history Champions like Palmer Nicholas and tiger left Lasting Impressions while respecting these sacred traditions in 2016 golf was shaken by a nerdy kid from California who quickly became known as golf’s mad scientist Bryson stuck out like a sore thumb he dawned a flat cap did experiments on his clubs and had a Physics degree from SMU one that he used to take a completely unique approach to the sport at first it was fun pro golfers are often times boring and Bryson was a breath of fresh air but controversy quickly followed after turning pro in 2016 Bryson Ted two impressive wins on tour but the honeymoon period ended in 2018 all lies turned to Scotland for the Open Championship European Golf is brutal when the conditions get nasty this goes double for Americans like Bryson who prefer to hit the ball high The Winds of Carusi were anything but kind and Bryson didn’t hide his emotions clubs were thrown faces were made and a full-on tantrum was broadcast on national TV this was the first time fans saw the other side of the mad scientist the one who wasn’t just young and quirky but immature his lab results were in and fans began to turn despite the negative press Bryson continued to pick up steam by 2019 he had five wins on tour but Co was looming this was the perfect time to experiment except this time the experiments weren’t his clubs they were on himself what is an offseason like for Bryson to Shambo well this year was a lot different I told everyone that I was going to come back a different person bigger stronger faster and I think I’ve succeeded at that Bryson executed a bulking campaign that made Tiger’s transformation look light determined to become one of the longest players that Tor has ever seen he tacked on 40 lbs but more importantly he picked up a new routine now every pro has the routines walkup patterns putt reading and even snacking naturally some take more time than others but Bryon became a nuisance each week they were growing longer and longer causing slow play to become a Hot Topic in the golf world fans hated it and players outwardly campaigned against it um what annoys you most anything slow play Slow play Yeah well yeah on the golf course slow play Slow play Slow play I I’d have to say slow play I can really hate a person for that yeah you know I mean no one likes to kind of just hit and have to wait forever Bryson was officially the tourist villain and poster boy for the slow play initiative it was welld deserved there was really no way around it he was slow at every step of the game for Bryson the opinions of others were merely background noise but one player couldn’t be ignored so many sports psychologists and everybody telling everybody that they can’t hit it until they’re ready and I mean I take 15 seconds and go and I’ve done all right so while Brooks never mentioned Bryson by name everyone knew exactly who he was talking about it would be one thing if this was coming from a middling Pro but Brooks was a four-time major Champ What followed was a few that sent Bryson into a Down spiral of controversy because at this point it wasn’t just his actions in the course that was irking fans it was his rhetoric through all of this nobody could deny Bryson was playing great golf he was extremely cocky and feeling himself after an impressive US Open win leading up to the Masters he chatted with the golf channels Todd Lewis and said quote I’m looking at Augusta as a part of 67 for me because I can reach all the par fivs and two no problem there is a lot you can get away with as a professional athlete disrespecting Augusta National is something you just don’t do immediately fans took their hate up a level sure a different approach to the game can be polarizing but also celebrated in reality this was never a big deal disrespecting the most prestigious club in the world was a big deal and the golf world let him have it didn’t embarrass the course the course embarrassed him and embarrassed embarrassed himself exactly yes Bryson hey this is a part of 67 for me what Matt Barry Michael Collins are reacting to here was Bryson’s implosion on holes 2 three and four from his Friday round he played them five of par with lost balls slow play and visible frustration in short he made a mockery of the sports granted stage and the golf Gods punished him Barry put it perfectly later in the Sam ESPN segment you know who Bryson is Bryson is the buddy of yours that you want to slap across the face because he says so many dumb things and can’t get out of his own way but then is also the same guy like why does everybody pick on me this seemed like a perfect place for the Redemption tour to start but they things only got weirder later in 2020 we witnessed the infamous ant video Bryson had a terrible lie there his ball was wedged between a couple sticks the only reason this conversation happened at all was because he wanted relief if he was able to convince the rules official that there was enough fire ants in the general vicinity he would have received a new and improved lie just don’t see Bry I don’t see there couple down there I don’t see fire well there was one that scrummed up through over here and it was here and then it here turns out the only fire in the anth incident was on social media fans flocked to Twitter to mock Bryson’s questionable motives bad attitude and overall immaturity nobody loved it more than [Music] Brooks Brookie vers Bryson was back on in full force and boiled over the 2020 PGA Championship Brooks finished seven strokes behind Bryson at Harding Park and neither walked away with a win it was actually Colin morawa who held the water maker but all the attention was centered on a viral interview is asking a lot for you today Brooks what were you able to do well just ball struck my way around this place um could put well but I don’t think any guys are going to put well with this win it’s it’s very tough I don’t know what other guys have said or I just felt it difficult to read you know sometimes sometimes um I lost my train to thought yeah hearing that fuckr we still don’t know what exactly Bryson said but I imagine he was mocking Brooks for making excuses about his poor finish others believe Bryson didn’t do anything at all and the ey rolls due to the clanking sound of Bryson’s metal spikes which are very rare for pros regardless social media exploded and fans took sides Bryson seemed capable of taking the heat online but when it rolled over the course he snapped again here he is teeing off while a fan refers to him as Brookie a clip that Brooks himself posted to Twitter all right Brookie trolling Bryson by referring to miss Brookie became a trend fans lit up with the opportunity to get under his skin with one simple troll this was happening without fail at every tournament Bryson’s odd rebuttal didn’t come until after Brooks post or ESPN’s body issue I don’t know if his genetics even make him look good to be honest I mean that body issue he didn’t have any ABS I can tell you that I got some abbs Brooks was quick to respond and it was hard to argue with he took the Twitter to share his four major trophies accompanied by the caption you were right I am too short of a six-pack these type of Jabs online became a theme as he later tweeted a photo of his golf cart adorned with the quotes too short of a six-pack let’s go Brookie there’s an ant and sorry bro while their Feud was actually great for golf and continued to make headlines Bryson was almost making it too easy for players and fans to point the finger if I can hit it down the middle of the Fairway that’s great but again with the driver right now the driver sucks it’s uh not a good face for me and we’re still trying to figure out how to make it uh good on the Miss hits it’s one thing to make comments on your round but calling out a sponsor that you chose to sign with is unheard of as a reminder here Cobra had given Bryson everything we’re talking custom crafted irons a state-of-the-art driver and every other piece of equipment Taylor Made down to the nanometer for golf’s mad scientist this wasn’t enough once again his immaturity was on full display for the world to dissect naturally Brooks was the first to pounce after his Friday round at the Open Championship he told reporters he quote loves his driver what he said after the round that was absolutely uh incredible uh in terms of what he had to say about his his his driver here Kyle I mean he loves his caddy and apparently he loves his driver and that that that rivalry with Bryson it just continues to take off we all knew this was coming we all knew I think I think Brooks wakes up he’s got a checklist contend at a major take a shot at Bryson those are the only two things that that he wants to do in 2021 the script took a sharp twist but we really knew it was coming despite how much everyone hated Bryson we all knew he was too talented to be snub from the Ridder Cup team of course this team also includes Brooks surprisingly though there were no fireworks What followed was a bright spot it was a step towards Redemption after the Americans took down the Europeans on their own soil all eyes were on Brooks and Bryson when the celebration ensued what happened next took the golf world by storm here you [Music] [Applause] [Music] the the beef was seemingly squashed as Bryson took a serious step towards redemption or so we thought we’ve got some breaking news here on CBS Sports HQ where the live golf roster continues to add big names the latest ryson to Shambo after publicly stating the live tour wasn’t for him Bryson turned to the dark side any in all Goodwill he built up during the Ryder Cup immediately evaporated it didn’t matter if you were a major Champion a standup guy or a PGA vet taking the check that join Saudi stateb tour was golf treeson as if this wasn’t bad enough 2022 rope incident followed shortly after an odd yet fitting introduction to Bry on live oh my God [Music] [Music] it seemed like nothing was ever going to go Bryson’s way this is obviously just an accident but his reaction doesn’t play well fans might have given other players the benefit of the doubt there but not Bryson his brand was the weird cocky money-hungry nerd whose Antics outweighed any accomplishments this was finally Rock Bottom the Redemption tour began what fans definitely didn’t see coming with Bryson’s move to live was the opportunity to showcase another side of him self you’d think a Saudi back league would tighten its grip on personality but it’s quite the opposite Bryson teamed up with a few of golf’s biggest social media stars and started a YouTube channel when people think of maturity it’s rarely equated to YouTube success but here we are the videos were fun light-hearted and genuine his passion for the game and his determination to win by any means necessary shine through it was as if the curtain had been lifted and the effects immediately translated to the course the 2024 major season started at Augusta Bryson played well and TI for six but things didn’t heat up until the PJ championship in Fall Halla a beast of a chorus that Bryson was ready for he carded three under followed by six under to move himself into contention for the weekend now Bryson lingering around the top of the leaderboard during a major was nothing new but something was different this time the fans were on his side he was engaging with the crowd showing his competitive Spirit without crossing any lines and golf fans were eating it up he even reprimanded a man in the crowd who snatched a ball meant for a kid get that ball back man for the people Bryson was battling Xander shafley all weekend long Xander opened up the tournament with a shocking nine under on Thursday but Bryson was slowly and steadily gaining ground the crowd roared as he made his comeback on Sunday afternoon he birdied two of his final three holes to tie Xander as he walked up the course but Xander had one last chance in 18 a par would send the two to a playoff all Bryson could do is watch as Xander’s final putt slid in the hole for birdie he took the loss with class he immediately left the range to find Xander in the 18th green and shake his hand the sportsmanship continued in his post round interview Bryson uh some great playing today to give it a run what what are your initial emotions watching that uh first emotions proud of uh Xander for finally getting the job done I mean he’s an amazing golfer and uh well-deserved major Champion now he’s he’s uh played well for a long long time I’ve played against him as a junior and it’s cool to see him not only he’s just a great human being but an unbelievable golfer and it shows this week the golf world couldn’t believe what they were seeing who was this new guy how did he mature so quickly wait do I like Bryson now if you weren’t sure how to answer that last question Bryson essentially gave you the answers to the test when the US Open came to Pinehurst this was a special venue for Bryson remember that flat cap he used to wear he wore it in onor ridal paint Stewart back in 99 pain won the US Open at Pinehurst in dramatic fashion but tragically passed away in a plane crash that same year his legacy looms large over the course as the club erected a statue of iconic celebration pain was everything to Bryson he represented a guy who could win in the biggest stages under his own terms Bryson was laser focused with his Idol on his mind but still showcasing his new and improved maturity just up ahead of him and connecting with everyone out here is way uh the shabo has been all week long and he has been stopping and taking time most every hole he teed off Sunday afternoon as the leader but Rory mroy caught fire he birdied 10 11 and 12 to take the lead while Bryson made Cosley Bogies on 12 and 15 the pressure was building for both of them but Rory cracked first he missed extremely short putts on 16 and 18 Bryson caught a break but he wasn’t in the clear he still needed to make a par in the 18th to Hoist the trophy it wasn’t going to be easy he hooked his Drive well left after the fans cleared he punched it back into play but found a bunker about 50 yards from the pin this was it this was Bryson’s Do or Die moment good contact the SL right up there right below the hole goes to Shambo and he’s ped up the shot was brilliant the best of his career but it wasn’t over he miraculously won the fans back but it couldn’t go down like the PGA he couldn’t be the guy who almost did it he needed this putt to win [Music] [Applause] [Music] in just two years Bryson completed one of the most shocking turnarounds in modern sports history he was golf’s biggest villain he went from a punching bag who even the players load to the poster of class integrity and skill on the highest level
