John Deere Classic golfers looking to qualify for The Open | Golf Central | Golf Channel

golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome tour golf ball from Callaway hey there Jimmy well year after year the John Deere classic has represented one of the final opportunities for players to try and qualify for the Open Championship and again this year the John Deere classic is one of those qualifying events for the open which means the top two finishers here this week that are not already exempt into the field at the Open Championship at Royal trun will will earn a spot in the field now this morning I spoke with several players who are trying to earn a spot at the Open Championship including Neil Shipley he finished as the low amiter at both the Masters and the US Open but is since then turned professional and will be trying to earn a spot in the field here this week um you know definitely know about it um just trying to come out here and have a good week and if that happens awesome if not um I’m not supposed to be there anyway so uh just uh it’s a cool opportunity and uh excited to hopefully maybe make it happen it is for sure um I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t um no I I played my first major at the US Open um I’d love to get in another one uh I was an alternate for the PGA so I was there that week as well um didn’t get arrested that week but you know it’s just kind of is what it is but um totally kidding um uh but uh no it’s just I’m I’m really trying to up my status and play in as many big events as I can and obviously the majors are as big as they get so trying to get in as as many as I can so yeah I mean it’s definitely on my radar but um at the end of the day just try to go execute golf shots and um just put myself in the best position on Sunday to to try and play well and you know do something great what would it mean to you to be able to get into that field and compete at Royal trune yeah it’d be awesome um you know the history of the open being able to play in Another major this year it would be awesome and uh it was one of my goals this year to to play in the majors and um got in the US Open but yeah it’d be awesome to play in another one uh not much I just pretty much have uh kind of set the schedule over these next five weeks if I get the open great um still got a lot of YouTube stuff that we uh need to pull off and I’ll be honest if if I do end up getting in it it could throw a wrench in some spokes of of things other things that I want to do on the YouTube side so um if I get in great uh we’ll I guess we’ll just cross that bridge when it comes will you do some YouTube stuff around the open instead if you’re not in the field uh I don’t know we’d have to have to get the whole squad over there somehow well I mean we’ll see probably maybe maybe not though I don’t know it’s it’s hard to it’s hard to say I’m just taking it day by day just seeing the way things go and which way the wind blows me but right now um a lot of my focus is on the YouTube side I’ve really enjoyed it getting to hang out and play golf with my brother and some of my Best Buds and act like an idiot on the golf course is is kind of in my happy place um I like a lot of guys out here but the vast majority aren’t willing to have as much fun as I want to have so um yeah I’m just getting a little older got a lot of kids being at home has a little value to me at this point so I don’t know we we’ll just we’ll see again wherever the wind blows me I’ll I’ll probably end up a side note on Shipley I asked him if he had already earned a spot in the field if he was already Exempted to the Open Championship as an Amer uh and if he had given up that experience having turned professional he told me no that he wasn’t already in the field so already having turned Pro he didn’t miss out on that experience now last year here at the John Deere classes classic subra came into the field he had not gotten into the field at the Open Championship he carded a final round 62 to go on to win here got into the field and ended up finishing in a tie for second at Royal Liverpool so Jimmy many players here in the field this week hoping to copy what straa did here last year Amy thanks how about Justin low auditioning some of that new nightclub material for you exclusively and a reminder you can watch the John Deere classic starting July 4th right here on Golf Channel of course first and second round coverage begin at 4:00 on the weekend at 1 before shifting over to CBS and of course as always we’ve got pre and postgame coverage every day before and after play right here on Golf Channel all right time now for the Comcast business tour top 10 and here are the top 10 as we head into July Scotty Sheffer with a healthy lead over Xander Schley and Rory mroy we’re only six weeks away from the beginning of the FedEx Cup playoffs top 70 based on these standings will gain entry entry I should say into the FedEx St Jude Championship so as Amy mentioned this week a number of players thinking about getting into the open but also plenty on the line for those trying to make the playoffs and keep their cards and to that point trip it’s all related to the fact that uh the field for the first playoff event in Memphis is just 70 players a lot of pressure there is Jimmy and and also the fact that what the tour has done this year with a signature um uh series model or the signature event model they’ve really the tour was always somewhat bifurcated they’ve kind of trifurcated it even further to those that are in the Signature Events those that are in that 70 that we talk about that’s great that you have the chance if you’re 70th to play your way into that top 50 but the players Beyond 70 you know they’re playing for their their jobs they have to end up playing in the fall events but uh the the problem is the chasm that that it’s has been grow has grown and good play if you’re not in the Signature Events doesn’t necessarily get you where you need to be and there’s a couple of examples this year you go to Bryce Garnett and Chris GD both one now they were additional events but normally winning an additional event you didn’t have to worry about getting into the playoffs or having a chance there now true they could have played better in some other tournaments that they played in and they still have time to do that but another player who really has played quite well is Kevin Yu you look at what he’s done and uh for this season I mean he’s had four top 10 tied for third at American Express now he did get in two of the big events he got in Genesis the signature event but that one has a cut I don’t like a 70 man field cut to 50 but needless to say he did miss the cut so he didn’t get any points there and then he got in the PLAYERS Championship where he missed the cut as well but normally this kind of play you’re not worried about uh trying to get into the playoffs or or what have you the the the problem that we have really I think going forward two things that the tours really got to look at the points in the Signature Events Jimmy 2 through 10 is the same as a major Championship that that should not stand because that also dilutes the major championships they need to stand alone as the as the best in the in the uh you know in the game of golf and to achieve a top 10 there should you should get more points than you should in any other event but now you can get uh the same points as you would so in effect with adding the six Signature Events we’ve got 10 major championships that the guys that were in the top 50 and the guys that get the opportunity to play in them with no cut they have the ability to really put a Chasm between them and other players and it’s a hard uh treadmill to to try to run on if you’re not in those events so that I think they need to really look at that the players need to say the Signature Events can have you know more points maybe than a regular event but not the same as a major championship and oh oh by the way let’s remember all the major championships have more players in their field than the Signature Events um so even the Masters has somewhere between 90 and 100 players typically the Signature Events have anywhere you know right around 70 so uh again I think they need to move those to 120 and have a cut the last thing I will say is I think the the tour needs to take a look from the player director part of of this I don’t think the the when you’re a player director you should be able to vote for your own interest I ask why I think the player directors should be former players players that have not uh that aren’t currently playing Joe OG is a wonderful addition um to the player director’s portion of the board and I think it needs to be more Joe ogies on that board making the decisions because then they don’t have a vested interest except for the overall best interest of all the players and therefore I think those couple of changes need to be looked at hard will they Jimmy I don’t know but the one thing about golf that is still there is it doesn’t know who you are and if you shoot enough good numbers you will eventually can break through it’s just the tours putting up more barriers for these players to have to get to where they want to be
