Jordan Spieth’s Putter: Is He Making a Change?

Is Jordan Spieth making a putter change and benching his Scotty Cameron 009? Spieth was spotted testing a Scotty Cameron blade and mallet, both with graphite shafts, at the Travelers Championship. Could Jordan Spieth add a new blade putter or mallet putter to his bag soon?

what the hell is that before the start of Saturday’s round at The Travelers championships I saw Jordan spe’s golf bag and there was his putter his9 as usual but next to it was a prototype Sky Cameron blade putter that appears to be fitted with a graphite shaft and next to his golf bag on the other side was another putter a prototype made by Scotty Cameron for Speed that is clearly a mallet Putter and it also appears to be fitted with a graphite shaft is Jordan spe getting ready to make a putter change and if so is he going with a mallet now equipment junkies know that Jordan be has been using his Scotty cameron9 for years in fact he put that Golf Club in the bag when he was just 16 years old and when he went to the Scotty Cameron Studio to get fitted for a new putter he fell in love with the9 and actually started intentionally missing some putts with other Putters that were presented to him because he so loved that 9 that he wanted to make sure that that was going to be the putter that went out the door with him originally it was black but over the years it has patined out and worn out because he has been putting with it so much the bottom of it is actually now down to the raw steel a silver tone is taken on this sort of coppery finish there’s paint fill that’s missing on some of the different areas it is his excaliber Tiger Woods has his Scotty Cameron Jordan spe has his so the idea that Jordan spe might be thinking about benching that Putter and putting in a new Scotty Cameron blade or possibly a Scotty Cameron Mallet both of which appear to be fitted with graphite shafts has got equipment people really just in disbelief and by equipment people I mean at least me so this chart right here shows you exactly why Jordan spe might be interested in making a putter change early in his career 2013 14 15 16 he got better and better as a Putter and in fact he was second on the PGA tour in Strokes gain putting in 2016 with a 758 uh Strokes gain putting average that means over the course of 18 holes just on the quality of his putting Jordan SM was gaining 34 of a shot on the average PGA Tour player which is absolutely massive now speed went down from that lofty rank uh over the next couple of years going to 48th and then bottoming out at 123rd in 2018 but he bounced right back the next season finishing once again second on the PGA tour at 862 since that time his putting has really been erratic he has gone down to 105th up to 33rd down to 155 up to 79 and entering the Travelers Championship a couple weeks ago he was ranked 8 third with essentially an average Strokes gain putting number of 0.045 so spe is really neither gaining an advantage nor giving upstrokes on the green to the average player and for a golfer who has historically as you can see had times when he is been an outstanding putter who is known as a good putter this is really not where Jordan be wants to be okay so that’s the reason why Jordan be might be motivated to make a Potter change and in case you weren’t aware back in 2017 for about a week or two Jordan Speed did put a mallet Potter into to the bag and played with it at the Byron Nelson Championship so he has done this very very briefly in the past let’s take a look at some close-up video footage that I was able to obtain at the traveler championship and see what we can learn about these prototype hotters that he had in Harford okay so here we can see the9 that Jordan spe has been using along with another Potter that is clearly a Scotty camera prototype you can see the Circle T there it has the same shaping to my eyes as the 9 it is obviously a newer finish we can see that there’s some screws that were on the back this is the part that really got me though this is a graphite shaft that is labeled as Scotty Cameron and to be honest with you I’ve been wondering if Scotty cam is going to be coming out with some type of a graphite shaft option at retail because graphite shafts while they are very very pricey have been gaining popularity and gaining a lot of visibility on the PGA tour there is interest in graphite shafts for Putters we have seen other putter makers coming out with graphite shaft options it would seem to be something that we would expect Scotty Cameron to come out with so this shaft was labeled experimental Scotty Cameron experimental prototype um and I can see that this shaft was on the um the the putter the blaz style putter that was labeled a Jordan Speed special so it really was interesting for me to sort of see that there was this graphite shaft that was affixed onto the blade style putter um I also can see that there are a couple of Weights that are on the bottom of that blad style putter Jordan speed putter uh his Gamer does not have weights on the bottom you put weights on the bottom of a putter so that you can change or adjust the swing weight without having to manipulate any other parts of the head so um this is obviously a prototype that is based off of probably a stock version maybe off of uh a super select or something that will be coming out potentially in 2025 or in the future so that is what we know about the blade style putter as we then transition down and take a look at the Mallet putter this is where things also get really really interesting this is a pretty Space Age kind of shape this is very similar to the Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5 this is a true Mallet putter it is extremely angular I think it’s interesting that there’s a white alignment line that’s on the top that is not in the retail version but it goes along with what Jordan spe has been using in the past notice that the huzzle um which is a plumbers neck huzzle has been hand welded into position again that is not the way that it comes stock is welded on there by hand to get the exact amount of tow hang and the balance that Jordan be is going to want to have from his putter there’s a lot more real estate for alignment features all those lines really trying to help to to guide and to help out with alignment on this putter now like the blade style putter we can see that there are a pair of Weights that are on the bottom of this putter they’re going to help to adjust swing weight if somebody wanted to and as you can see um this putter wall the blade had a graphite shaft that was labeled as a Scotty Cameron experimental um prototype there was no markings nothing to to tell you exactly what that shaft was made of but it looked pretty much identical to my eye to the graphite shaft on there so I believe that both of these poters were a fixed with a prototype Scotty Cameron graphite shaft now let be very clear Jordan Speed did not put either the Prototype blade or the Prototype Mallet into play at The Travelers Championship although his caddy Michael G did tell me that he did do quite a bit of work with the mount poter and it almost went into play that was one that was considered but it did not make the final cut it did not go into action it was interesting to see that Jordan Speed was having Michael G do a lot of videotaping of his stroke during his warm-up section and was really paying a close attention to his form to his stroke and those prototypes were right on the ground next to him throughout much of his warm-up session at least on Saturday so is there going to be a putter change coming very soon to Jordan Speed it’s certainly possible his statistics his putting for so far this year in 2024 has not really been up to the standard that he wants he’s clearly got some experimental products that are right there from Scotty Cameron waiting for him that he’s been tinkering around with that he’s been doing some testing with it’s a really hard time to sort of pull the trigger because there’s so much meaningful golf coming up we’ve got the Open Championship right around the corner then the FedEx Cup playoffs then the President’s Cup it might be something that he is just tinkering around getting ready for the off seon uh the fall and the winter time of year when it might be a little bit easier for him to make a full commitment to a new putter but Jordan spe anytime he’s looking to make equipment changes when it comes to his putting in his short game it’s something that’s really noteworthy I’m glad I could spot it really in time I’m glad I could get you some of this information because I know people are
