Rory mroy hits a 349 yard drive down the middle of the Fairway Rory mroy hits 189 yard shot to 24 feet middle of the green Rory mroy lags it up there to two feet six inches he goes to clean it up for par Patrick and he whiffs it and he misses fre Jack from 24 feet 11 inches including one from Two and a half feet to card his second straight Bogey and if the door was half open before it is wide open now yeah there there’s there’s nothing really to add to it except you miss a two and a half footer on the 69th hole of the US Open he played the whole perfectly perfectly the the shot he hit into 16 is the shot he needed into 15 right it’s like a full B what did he hit a hit like a nineiron or pitching wedge full boore way up in the air nine hit nine iron full boore lands in the dead center of the green it’s exact L what Rory has talked about this like and and we have talked about it on this podcast many times in Majors you got to flush it to 30 feet and you got to rip it with your irons to 30 feet in so many situations and he he does it it’s perfect and and then what what like I don’t I don’t speechless I’m speechless you miss it I honestly thought when Bryson 3 puted his it was like oh my goodness the stars are aligning for Rory mcroy yes for Bryson to three putt from 25 feet a guy who was seemingly making like everything this weekend it was like wow that is the break that Rory mroy had not gotten at St Andrews at LACC at all these close calls he finally saw the competitor blink and it was like okay he’s going to do this and then right when that happens he does that it’s like right when he had a hand on the trophy it felt like he misses the two and a half footer it it yes Bryson blinked first Bryson blinked first and Greg I don’t there there’s no other way to describe it he I mean he choked it he tot choke just they just nothing but pressure and knowing what you are on the verge of to you just choked yes I mean it’s a putt of a distance that Scotty sheffler would have made last year at this point and probably would have made this week um you know like everybody can make that Putt and everybody does make that Putt and it’s different on site days but you still don’t see this very often in a major championship where you’re missing a putt from Two and a half feet with the lead in a major I mean what is the last time you’ve seen somebody somebody do this uh Gordon Sergeant on the 18th hole at Lac when the cup was out and it bounced off the back yeah right in the middle of the hole Yeah it was also before the final group came through I would I mean is it up there with DJ at Chambers worse yes it’s definitely worse DJ was was twice as long wasn’t it I mean I don’t know D that that was a three putt from like 12 feet yeah yeah on Plinko board greens so yeah that is true did you see the Justin race at Rory mroy was 496 for 496 for from inside 3 feet this season before that yeah you just I mean the I mean it’s it’s hard to exaggerate or overstate how automatic these are for the best players in the world let alone Rory let alone I mean it’s two and a half feet um you might have been able to sub me in they’re they’re missed in a couple of a couple of ways they’re usually not because of massive amounts of pressure usually Under Pressure you take your time and you make it from that distance you get outside of three feet and it’s a different story I’m talking two and a half feet those get missed when guys go up and tap them in one-handed yeah right when they’re not paying attention clearly they don’t get missed when you mark you get yourself set you go through your routine and you hit a putt it they don’t they’re not missed despite all of that sorry Jack Jack Nicholas won of a major um who did at at St Andrews somebody missed a two oh you’re right above the hole yeah um H it wasn’t the Italian was it no no it was uh I have goldby in my mind Doug Sanders Doug Sanders yes yes yes that looks like that looked I I if you go back and watch the footage it looks like the invention of the putting stroke right I mean it looks like they don’t know how to putt the way that he tried to I don’t even know it all it was all it was so bizarre the way he tried to knock that in yeah that’s the one that that’s the one I could think of and like you said Rick it you watch that footage and it might even be in Black white you know it’s like it’s a long time ago man this is brutal I’m watching it right now he tries go as soon as it’s off his Club face he’s like oh my God he’s trying to will it in he’s trying to scare it in is he wearing double monks oh my gosh he might be wearing double monk golf shoes sorry that’s okay despite all of this we get to the 72nd hole of the US Open with Bryson D Shambo and Rory mroy both at six underpar tied for the lead and now they’re not in the same group so this is playing out kind of in a shot by shot manner so it’s it’s it’s it’s kind of weird uh Rory pulls driver yangs Swan left into the native area draws a uh I don’t know seemed like a prettyy crappy lie and he’s and he’s I don’t know what did he do Greg did he like Duff it did he fat it he he actually I thought he got quite lucky to have it end up where it was in a pretty straightforward up and down situation well it was directly behind a bush you know I mean it’s right behind a piece of wire grass so he he could get a club on the back of the ball but it’s like you’re under the lip of a bunker so it comes out thick the that all that grass is slowing it down it doesn’t have a chance to get over it and and it comes out low and tumbling and just skirts the bunker that comes into play again later the booger that looks like it should never be in play Rory skirts it and it’s in a great spot to get it up and down very straightforward chip uphill with a back stop you know it it’s I mean not a gimme back stop but it’s a very simple straight forward shot that Rory executes you’re on mute Rick sorry what a rookie move I had such a good I picked up right on it and I was excited and I hit I hit it Greg and I now I gotta Rory did execute that shot he hits it to three feet nine inches and while he’s looking over that putt Patrick uh Bryson in the group behind yet Banks it left and he’s in a worse position than Rory is he’s got a tree over his head he’s got a route down by the golf ball he is spending a ton of time trying to figure out how he is going to advance this so you’ve got Rory putting for par on the 72nd hole you’ve got Bryson in the garbage trying to figure out how to put Club on it there is they are tied and all the permutations all the outcomes are flipping through your brain it it was such a strange Dynamic where Rory was always looking over his shoulder for the for the last hour he was always looking to see where Bryson Des Shambo was like he watched his shot into 17 when Bryson was barking at it when he pimp stepped it to 17 feet and I don’t like I know Sky Sports kind of gave it to Rory for the club Choice off the te the driver they did um I know that was Bryson’s game plan the entire week the driver seemed like he was in that left stuff get it past all the wire grass maybe get Tio relief if you’re lucky he didn’t get it this time obviously and uh yeah Rory’s chip was great right just inside four feet on the high side which isn’t I mean isn’t ideal but he’s Rory freaking macroy you should be making putts inside four feet it broke a ton but it the you have to imagine the nerves just in the moment got to you have to it’s Roy freaking maoy he’s got three feet n inches to post six under to post Greg he’s got it and he misses it and he missed it he missed it and now it’s just like fate like like his own fate Now lies in the hands of Bryson D Shambo um so he missed on 16 the two and a half footer left yeah now this one is sliding viciously to the right I wonder if I wonder if that played into his mind at all um it it didn’t look like I mean it broke a lot it was slippery it didn’t look like a great stroke to me no um so I I don’t think Rory made a great stroke now the one thing that Rory tends to do with his putting is he tends to have too much rise angle like he hits up on it too much and he catches it low on the face and they showed a profile not a worm like a worm cam but profile and and he was very U he hit it very low on the face which is a sign to me that he kind of goes back to what his habits are like go it goes back to to the problem I didn’t see another putt from that angle with Rory earlier in the week to compare the two but I I don’t think Rory made a very good stroke and and he missed it this one is more excusable than the one on 16 yes but you don’t get a a better opportunity to win a major like it’s not going to be easy to win a major it’s never easy and you have to do things that are hard and while this is a hard putt it’s a lot easier than many of the Alternatives and it’s a golden opportunity and you just you can miss them if you want to come in second but you got to bury them to come in first

  1. Based on the scores at the beginning of the round, it's not that Rory gave it away. It's that Bryson just gave Rory a chance to beat him but couldn't. Bryson was 3 shot ahead to begin with. If anything, it's Bryson giving Rory a chance to catch up to him all game and Rory failed. Not the other way around people.

  2. Another big pay cheque for Rory, roll on the British Open and big congrats to Bryson, a worthy winner and trailblazer.

  3. Well as putting goes, if anybody should feel aggrieved with themselves it's Cantlay. Miles better than both of them Sunday and lost more shots putting than Rory

  4. This popped up but after listening to you I have no respect for any of you. . Good luck with your journalist jobs

  5. The driver on the short par 4 was a ridiculous call, easy 3 wood all day for him. Again it's on the caddy to intervene.

  6. 16 was all nerves. He had a weird nervous tick on the last few holes. Before teeing off,he would blow air on his right hand. I'm not sure that I have seen him do that before.

  7. I told my wife Rory can't putt and then he drains three long birdie's. But then he gas trucked the tournament. Simply put a huge disaster that could define his career moving forward!

  8. I feel bad for Rory because everyone going hold him on that day for his miss put and reporters going just folk too ask him his mentality going be different for the open.

  9. As far as Bryson hits his irons why wouldn't he get out and iron on 18 put it in play then hit another one on I don't get it

  10. if only he could transfer his anger in the parking lot (when he peeled out) to the putting green (inside 3 feet), he'd be better off–better to be angry in a critical moment than worried, scared and insecure)

  11. Did you see that putt, he aimed and struck it left of cup, borrow and strong grain, the ball veered violently right, give him a break!!
    it wasn’t that bad,

  12. Rory's putt on the last although harder reminded me so much of Doug Saunders on the 18th at St Andrews, you just knew there's a good chance he'd miss it.🫣

  13. Not a laughing matter. Too much pressure on the hood shoulders. Feel awful for the dude. Absolutely crushing for him. Pray he recovers from this and gets it done

  14. Reminded me of Scott Hoch when he gave the Masters Tournament to Faldo in a playoff on a similar putt; difference being I was rooting for Hoch.

  15. Taking a year off might not be the worst idea at this point. If hard work isn't working …go do something else for bit.

  16. I've bn saying it for yrs that it's the putts inside 10/12ft that Rory struggles with, that sort of range that they're not gimmes but the World's best putters hole more than their fair share but those 2 putts last nite! One a 2 1/2 footer & one from inside of 4ft those are unforgivable at any level let alone a major championship!

  17. I’m not surprised. Rory is my favourite golfer but he bottled it. No other words for it. Under pressure he just forgot to do what Faxon and Rotella have been teaching him. He’ll never get over this. Rory will never win another major period it pains me to say it. BDC ranked 10 in the world.

  18. It sure looks like a choke job, two missed short putts in crucial situations. They may not have been choke-misses. He may have missed them if they were meaningless putts to secure 35th position. But the putts looked chokeish. On a different matter, it isn't coincidence that the longest hitters in the tournament finished #1 and #2. Personally, I see that as a little bit of a problem.

  19. Rory is the real winner .he did not fall for the moneydevil .he at least stay true to the hand who fed him all the years.respect .he don.t need to be ashame of himself

  20. Rory claims to be number1. He plays like number 2. Then in an arrogant lack of class he leaves the venue before any interviews. He just is not a likable golfer.

  21. I'm a guy who played competitive basketball all the way through my 20s. I consider a foul shot at the end of a game to be similar in pressure to a crucial late round short putt in golf. I actually did not like to be put in that position. The expectation is that it should be converted. So, in a sense, it is a no-win position to be in. On the other hand, I did not mind taking a crucial outside shot during game play. It seemed to put far less pressure on the psyche.

  22. First off McIlroy left himself with a downhill
Slider it was not a great chip. Second DeChambeau barely missed birdie putts on 16 & 17 and had his own yip on 15 with a missed 4 footer. McIlroy blew 15 when he landed Past the flag DeChambeau landed hole high but 3 putted his lag wasn’t very good. but he lost concentration and put too much speed and pulled the par put. This is why McIlroy lost 2/9 sand saves. DeChambeau was much better 5/9

  23. The missed putt by Doug Sauders in the British Open in 1970(?) is a textbook miss. There's only one video out there that I've seen that shows the full sequence of this missed putt. Sanders had lined up his putt, addressed the ball…but before pulling the trigger something catches his eye and he steps out of his stance to pick up a small rock or whatever on his line. But then he just addresses the ball without lining up his putt again from behind the ball. He can see that his feet are not exactly in the same place as before. It's as if his brain realizes he's not aligned correctly and his body tries to adjust for that. That explains his strange follow through because he knew he funked up. Lesson here is: ALWAYS go through your shot routine even if it's only a 2 1/2 foot putt!

  24. 496 from 496 from 3 feet this year the boys State…

Rory on 16 hit through this 4footer too firm (misses high) and he missed on 18 low (L to R putt).
So, the 2.5 putt on 18… the scene: he has an enormous amount of tension and adrenalin flowing as everyone would have. The putt was very fast left to right, it was not a simple straight, r to l or uphill. His issue was he chose or just hit it at a slow speed therby increasing the break to baby the putt. He didn't chose to rap it in.
Like Greg D said, he hit up on the putt too much as the stroke was "interrupted". If he starts it on the left lip and hits it firm the putter face will open slightly going back and close on downswing; this bolder speed would go 4 to 5 feet pass if it misses (super fast putt), If he executes the firm ball speed it doesnt miss (but can't hit to firm through the break). If a firm yet middling pace is selected what is required is courage to commit to this speed.

Secondly, Rory putts over a spot in front of the ball on his line and then lets the ball break in. The problem with this is when there is mass tension and you get too focused on one spot you lose the feel for the whole putt 2.5 foot putt…He may have rolled that putt over his spot but because he babied the putt the ball takes a lot of break and misses. What speed and line do you want? (Your INTENTION), step up and "putt your intention" like there are no consequences. That is the only choice.
