with the 150th pick in a 2024 NFL draft well I had him at 99 where’d you have him field higher than that 84 third third fourth round like that’s a the Russell Wilson Area is what we’re saying pretty much the New Orleans Saints select Spencer Rattler quarterback he went lower than we thought he was we thought at one point in time we were going to be talking about him late second early to mid third always pays off to be patient right why did Spencer Rattler really fall so far in the draft well draft slides happen every single year right they can happen for a variety of reasons we see a player fall because of injury character concerns need runs at other position groups and of course gas mask bongs which is my absolute favorite reason a guy can fall gas mask bongs can we just for a second appreciate how insane it was that gas mask bong video that was posted to his own Twitter account the morning he was supposed to be drafted top five back in 2016 that was messed up and he was still great now there were six QBs taken in the first 12 picks of the 20 24 NL draft for the seventh quarterback though it took another 137 picks before he got a phone call from an NFL team who was that QB well it was South Carolina Spencer Rattler and while Rattler was always projected as a day two pick sliding to the fifth round was a big surprise I’m going to explain why he fell that far it’s also a Spencer Rattler was the first quarterback I dove into in my pre-draft video series that covered him JJ McCarthy bonick Michael pennick and Drake may I started with Rattler though because his story is the most compelling to me out of any of those guys he was on a reality show in high school great idea he went to Oklahoma got usurped by the future number one overall pick Caleb William and then had to reinvent himself at South Carolina before he finished his Serpentine path to the NFL it’s all in the name ain’t it Spencer now I’ve already gone through a lot of Rattler’s story so I’ll keep it short Rattler was highly recruited to Oklahoma becoming the successor to Jaylen Herz in 2020 and was on the short list to become a Heisman Trophy winner and number one overall pick by the time his Junior season ended not only did neither of the those things happen he played two more seasons at a different school by the time Spencer Rattler was replaced by Caleb Williams in the starting lineup for the 2021 Oklahoma Sooners he was 5-0 Williams was such a highly touted recruit and spectacular playmaker that he basically dwarfed Rattler who was the number one QB recruit himself in 2019 and considered a guy with good enough tools to eventually become the first overall pick but by 2022 rattler had followed Shane Beamer to South Carolina where he was going to attempt to rebuild his college career reform His Image and hopefully work his way back up the draft charts by April of 2024 his numbers in the SEC were not eye popping but he was playing in a different offense than he was under Lincoln Riley Rattler eventually won Senior Bowl MVP looked like he was a strong leader and a good communicator and had been mocked in the first round by some Scouts ahead of the draft that obviously did not happen in the most unprecedented run on first round QBs we’ve ever seen Rattler was the odd man out and we knew there was a gap between him and nicks but no one thought there was 137 pick gap between those two quarterbacks in fact the gap between him Nicks pinnix and JJ McCarthy is Slim so slim my fear is that if bonick is bad and Spencer Rattler is good the Broncos are going to look so stupid for taking Nicks at 12 when they or any team could have drafted Rattler in the second or third or fourth or even top of the fifth where would you like to see this young man throw the rock I think Minnesota going over there with Justin jeda man Minnesota I think that’ be a good fit for him like you said earlier uh it’s probably Denver but while he was freef falling down the draft board and sitting around on Saturday day three waiting to hear his name called we got some clarity on the NFL Network draft Broad C from one Ian Rapaport and this is kind of weird to say honestly Spencer rowler did a reality show in high schools called qb1 Beyond the Lights it did not make him look great and it is unbelievable how many different teams mentioned to me the image of him in that show and how they can’t get it out of their heads which I think would be a public service announcement to all 17-year-olds but is fascinating his team’s way whether or not to draft him was was it really possible that a Netflix show from 201 19 a show that was filmed when Rattler was 17 was now causing a 23-year-old Rattler to fall down the draft boards according to Rapa Port that’s exactly what happened and since it is Ian Rapa Port I tend to believe that there’s some truth there he doesn’t make up Rattler’s coach from SC did come to his defense trying to squash those rumors it didn’t help because Rattler slid all the way to the fifth round let’s try to make some sense of that real quick here because first of all what the hell is C qb1 qb1 Beyond the Lights was a Peterburg produced show that ran for Four Seasons and followed some of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks from different backgrounds as they navigate their senior seasons and make the transition from high school through college it’s a good show it’s entertaining I’ve seen it and they had big names like Justin Fields Jake from Sam Hartman Bryce Young and the most divisive participant of all One spencer Rattler Rattler was a ified stud at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix Arizona and he knew it incredibly talented highly productive and extremely Brash he was a bit of a battler if you will and I would normally say he was just a kid but to be honest he did come off as a little more arrogant or self-involved or whatever adjective you want to use than pretty much any other kid on that show but the point still stands he was just a kid a kid who was held to a higher standard than most based on his status as a top recruit and was fixed under a microscope that he clearly wasn’t suited for at that point in his life there’s one scene that gets tossed around quite a [Music] bit what are you doing one minute let’s go that’s all on you bro it’s been shook you missed four or five easy ass passes you missed so many passes bro Miss maybe three yeah I know I know and that caus us to game what’s up why don’t you try to pick me up right why don’t you try to pick me up huh all you do is you put me down you won the Elite 11 Spence you’re the cockiest Jack’s better than you and yeah he does not come off looking like uh saint but even this scene was not from an actual team drill they’re just kids messing around talking to each other and of course he takes it a bit too far but once again he was 17 he’s a competitive guy there are a handful of instances I remember from high school where I was a dick things I wish I didn’t say and luckily nobody was there filming it specifically Peter Berg and specifically I remember Peter Berg hanging around my high school quite a bit What’s your deal Peter what’s your infatuation with high school guys Peter just kidding your ski movie is sick now being a little bit of a jerk was one thing some of the best QBs of all time have a good amount of in them play we got to run the but there was something else that happened on that show and I say something specifically because we still don’t know what happened what we do know is that Rattler was suspended for the end of his senior season at Pinnacle ruled ineligible for violating a district code of conduct it was an oncampus incident that didn’t go on his record and did not involve drugs and he was never suspended from the the school itself just from actually playing football there are a ton of rumors and speculation as to what happened but I’m not going to dig too deep into what happened 5 years ago to a minor especially when it didn’t keep him from going to Oklahoma months later but I would be shocked if NFL teams and their scouting departments didn’t get to the bottom of exactly what happened a long time ago obviously it didn’t make a difference to the Saints but it might have made a few their teams a little guny here’s the thing though had Spencer Rattler lit up the stat sheet last year at South Carolina I think those guny teams pull the trigger on him early the same way we saw happen to Johnny Manzel or Baker Mayfield two guys I’d put in the same mix of having a lot of talent but with some concern surrounding their character yes it’s at different degrees uh Rattler has shown more maturity than Johnny Manzel ever did and he was never famously chased down and and tackled by police while in college like Baker Mayfield and honestly the fact that Baker Mayfield went number one overall after that video came out is still a shocker to me not because he was arrested or whatever but because he couldn’t outrun a cop anyway outside of the Saints there were other teams that had high grades on Rattler the only problem was they found their quarterbacks in the top 12 according to Adam schfer two teams that liked him most in my mind were the Denver Broncos and the ATL at the Falcons and I think they had a midc early third round grade on them now if the Falcons had spent another pick even a late round one on Rattler the entire city of Atlanta might have imploded had they drafted Rattler and Rattler only in the fourth round instead of pinnick they would have been praised now they already made the highly controversial move to take Michael pinnick at 8 overall despite handing the keys to the kingdom over to Kirk Cousins about 6 weeks before the draft well maybe more than six weeks pending an NFL investigation the Broncos were also out of the market having traded for Zack Wilson and selecting God bless B Knicks at 12th overall but here’s what happened seven teams in my mind really needed a QB heading into the draft the Bears the commanders the Patriots the Giants the Broncos and the Raiders that’s six and the Vikings the Vikings too the Falcons were not on that list but we know what happened anyway chaos the Giants and the Raiders ended up taking best players available New York passed on pinnick McCarthy and nicks to take receiver Malik neighbors and the Raiders decided to roll with oconnell and muu when they took Brock Bowers at 13th overall so I guess it becomes obvious that the Raiders didn’t have a high grade on Rattler or they red flagged him because of qb1 the Giants passed on him three times after the first round taking a safety a corner and a tight end before Rattler came off the board Rattler to the Giants and say the fourth round would have been such a nice pick for them and I think Rattler would have paired very well with one Brian dable the Raiders then passed on Rattler at pick 44 77 112 and 148 exactly two picks before the Saints put Spencer out of his misery and it seems silly to me that the Raiders who signed undrafted rookie uh Bradley Carter a quarterback after the draft believe that’s a better option to add to their QB room than Rattler with Aiden oconnell and of course the godd of sex himself then again it is the Raiders even though he ended up having to wait I think Rattler ended up in an ideal spot the saints were not desperate for a QB last year they signed Derek Car a 4-year $150 million deal with the potential out after the 2025 season Carr was far from incredible last year but he posted a winning record and had good Derek cares numbers despite being saddled with the second worst running attack in terms of per carry efficiency he’s also 33 years old and I don’t think anyone expects him to take a major step up in his career we kind of know who Carr is as a quarterback he’s consistent but needs things around him to go right if he’s going to be a top 10 guy and make the playoffs the saints were in a great position to take Rattler with a low commitment pick let him sit and learn for a couple years and potentially hand him the ball if he develops and they feel like Carr is no longer the answer ultimately though I don’t believe that Rattler’s role on qb1 was the deciding factor on where he was eventually drafted I think more than anything it was an issue of supply and demand in the QB Market there was a run on all of those passers at the first 12 picks and everyone collectively decided to cool the off after that and remembered there was a ton of talent to be had at the non-qb positions that and of course the teams that were in Rattler got their QBs ahead of him and the two teams that were still in the market weren’t Rattler fans for one reason or another if there were teams that genuinely like Spencer Rattler as a prospect and took him off their draft board because of how he acted on a highly produced and carefully edited Netflix series from 5 years ago they are idiots it’s that simple but I would not put it past them because teams and scouting departments are routinely very very stupid it doesn’t seem like they have any consistency in terms of character outweighing ability we’ve seen players with actual serious character and even legal issues in college not high school get drafted early because teams decided the reward outweighed the risk and while Rattler put up modest numbers in an NFL style offense the reward there didn’t appear to outweigh taking him earlier in the draft Rattler has had had time to grow up mature and by all accounts he has in every media appearance he’s come off as respectful humble and a good dude I think his story has had a lot to do with that because life and football have clearly helped humble him but he could have also imploded at the first sign of uncertainty and gone off the deep deep end he didn’t the opposite happened he got thrown some curveballs he took his medicine and He adjusted how do you handle some of the the things that have been flung your way you know I think it just comes with a territory especially being a quarterback going through this process um it’s nothing new you know you go through it through college uh it’s a whole another level right now but I mean you control what you can and uh everything else will take care of itself and I am personally rooting for Rattler I want to see him do well I want him to make the rest of the league look stupid because if he is good then they are stupid I also think that since he does indeed look like an actor who could play Patrick Mahomes in a movie about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift uh that scared teams as well just too close to offbrand momes you know thanks for watching that’s good sports Please Subscribe here
