[Applause] [Music] [Applause] Des hello and welcome to Blue Monday and Ipswich toown podcast I’m feeling really chilled because it’s close season we’ve got very little to talk about so David Diamond is here we’re going to have what is supposed to be a bit of fun Dave but it’s going to get very vexatious in the comments welcome Dave what are we about to do um well we’re about to rank the um I switch town the 18 this is amazing isn’t it 18 I think in 80 84 Seasons the 18 full sort of full-time managers of discounted caretaker managers I just can’t go there that I switch toown have had in their history and um the idea and is for us to rank them from 18th to 1 so here’s your trigger warning and your YouTube warning listen to me now and listen to me good this is supposed to be a bit of fun yeah wherever you have anybody in your list that’s great amazing it’s just an opinion and just a little bit of fun we’d love to hear your comments but please for God’s sake stay calm stay calm we don’t need to hear about anything being criminal or a joke it’s not that deep what I would love you to do if you watching on YouTube right now is there’s 18 we’ve got five Blue Monday podcast era managers just try and guess now in the YouTube comments hit pause where McCarthy Hurst Lambert cook and McKenna are going to land in the 18 but look everyone’s got their knives sharpened Dave because in 18th Place the worst ever feel bad even saying is’s Town manager you’ve gone for Paul Hurst why look I felt defending myself I don’t have to why you know I felt a bit sorry for him really but yeah I mean only had 15 games Ben um uh 1-1 Drew seven lost seven had a win win percentage of 66.7% um and look let’s face it um the previous manager had gone the previous hey we’ll get on to the previous manager obviously the previous manager left the previous April um and we um yes went M all through those last four games um he was appointed in the summer of 2008 um summer of 2018 um and I think you know we knew a bit about him you knew certainly knew a bit about him from your efl your efl dealings as such and it had a a sort of reasonable managerial background with I think grimby and scunthorp and Grimsby um that was rosbury just got to the player final sorry rosbury sorry yeah um that was obviously the pond we were fishing in at the time um and he came in and it was kind of immediate there was a bit of a a bit of a a warning after was it the second game he exitor League Cup away game just got everything wrong didn’t he everything the psychology the transfers the tactics poor fella yeah no he was out he clearly he at the club the size of town he was he was clearly out of his depth I don’t think his um he came in with his um uh number two Chris do um Chris do yeah who I think how can I put this mildly wasn’t particularly liked by the um by the players seemingly so yeah I’m I’m sorry but um yeah he comes in he comes in at 18 we can’t dwell too long on each one but he comes in at 18 um what I’ve done I’ll try to pick I’ve tried to pick a highlight or highlights from each each manager orl I mean highlights I’m sorry but it’s U well this one win is swans it away it’s a 32 there luckiest win you’ll ever see in your life it was it was it was a 3-2 way win at Swansea probably undeserved as you quite rightly said and I’ve got to speak for him the other the other thing in his favor he was um in his um short tenure we did sign um jny Johny denian and um Jackson and Kaden Jackson J dastan and wonder what became of those two and where they so I think you know looking further down the line well Five Seasons down the line yeah tip your tip your hat into him for that but yeah sorry um sorry Paul you are um yeah you are in 18th position and Dave I asked the listeners to tick off the Blue Monday era managers we’re ticking them off very quickly because he used to play for Dortmund Paul Lambert um can I can I give a bit of mitigation for Lambert go go well I mean he’s terrible wasn’t he but do you remember do you remember at the start of the um we first season in League one we had tons of points with Wickam didn’t we do you remember no no sorry yeah yeah yeah yeah um but I also remember this has become a podcast iconic moment hasn’t it where I hadn’t seen us play that season and I met you for a game against shrey and you were really happy and I was like this team’s no good this a’t gonna get promoted but were you also with me were you so was with you or um could be St or former colleague stat we’re at the ready away game he’s very we met we met before the game the first 15 minutes of that was amazing wasn’t it yeah with Chambers the split must been Chambers and James and nudson with the split fullbacks and we’re thinking oh my God what’s going on here revolutionary so Dave he had to cope with um we’ve taken over from HST he had to cope with the pandemic and the last bit of M no yeah do you know what I think perhaps and you make me feel terribly guilty now I’m really feeling guilty about don’t feel guilty D just it’s just a bit of fun yeah I mean as you’re quite rightly said it’s it’s highlight um 1920 the covid season League one manager of the month I think 14 points out of eight 14 points out of the first 18 I remember at the back of that going to away game at um Norwood and Jackson rip South sounds awful South End rip South End apart how far we’ve come but yeah yeah sorry Paul you go there um I’ve done a um uh win percentage 32 point so 113 games 32.7 the worst thing about him was seeing him come in as this bullshi alpha male trying to win everybody over and just it just Dro off he tried to go the right way with PR do you remember in those first few weeks you got some of the ex think you got Butcher and Burley Etc up at the training ground 20 grand behind the bar was it yeah sort of a like that yeah kind of a PE just didn’t really work and do you know what I don’t think the fans really the fans really really um you know really ever really talked to and we have to mention I mean look the club where it is now four years on totally different whatever was the club thinking in January 2020 with the famous fivey year it’s still he still should be here it’s a fiveyear contract but look yeah the one moment Dave I was in the Press Box just in front of the Press Box at Caro Road and the oh the foe um you know the fox sort of fight with Daniel farker when they were so much better than us oh dear it’s horrible yeah it was just it was just just embarrassing I mean just a good about his managerial career I mean just how his managing career sort of kind of took off was that if you remember that aside from us prior to us that 7-1 win on the first day of the Season at at at Norwich when he was manager of cester immediately snapped up and um you kind of forget obviously we know the history from there what happened that season and the season after but you kind of forget they subsequent later on the season went to CEST and beat them 5-n that’s quite a turnover in results and another one much much further down the line this morning an even better turnaround and result we’ll get to but yeah um sorry Paul yeah yeah for me nah seven 17th Dave cliche AO on the Blue Monday podcast great players do not make great managers and we’re going to have two here in a row that I want you to deal with in one go two incredible worldclass football players Roy Keane and Jackie Milburn get involved oh my God so yeah I mean Roy Roy Keane I mean I think we’re all we’re all shocked weren’t you I mean Jim Jim M jilon who again will get to shortly obviously above the list Paul Roy Kean he um it was an odd one he was kind of appointed we just beaten Norwich we just beaten Norwich three to God well last time we beat norwi in 2009 just beating him 3-2 and um suddenly um news breaks Roy King’s coming in the door I don’t think anyone could quite believe it to be fair um such an unlikely IP switch manager I don’t think you could you could ever come across but anyway Roy Kean in through the door for the last two games of the season and he comes we win the last two games of the season I think um including a 3-0 win at um including a 3-0 win at car if I remember rightly might been the last game at Nan Park actually I think perhaps it I think I got that right I think so s will be shouting all over YouTube think I’ve got that right um and High Hopes high hopes for the coming season 15 games in no win um just and it just never never really worked and Dave The Narrative is this is before the parachute payments got crazy at a point where owner of Marcus Evans wealth could make a difference and he didn’t make a difference did no no he he he really couldn’t um you know despite I think everyone you I think Roy King good God you know we saw what had’ done with Sunderland got them got them up to the premere um I know I a lot of a lot of Irish fans and basically I remember fact I remember going over to irand business during that time and you know the usual Dublin taxi drivers Etc love to talk about football all over roid going oh we’ll get you up oh I think you win the you know you win the championship with record points sort of thing you okay but yeah just never not the right personality for the club unfortunately not the right fit and again I want to I want to try and pick a highlight um I want to try and pick a highlight from each um from each manager’s kind of um kind of uh you know um term um and it would be probably Roy Keane I’m scratching about really but it’s probably going to be the comry 3-2 game the Pablo kago I mean I’m scratching about for sort of highlights there but that was that was uh yeah that was just just incredible I mean just more for the yeah the the obviously The Narrative of that commentary with we’re struggling anyway commentary equalized I me literally 96 minute I don’t think we won at home for a fair amount of time and straight from the kickoff yeah Pablo sort of chips it in the northand then everyone goes crazy and I think yeah that’s probably the sadly the only highlight I can really take from his from his Reign really Jackie Milburn wow now here’s the thing so Jackie Milburn so again um well you you had to mention it because the narrative Jackie Milburn took over from Alf Ramsey we all know and we’ll get to much much further much much further I talk about poison challenge you know David Moyes um Alex Ferguson Etc um obviously a replac the ball it was a very aging team that had um I won’t say what it did I’ll get to that but had the success a couple of Seasons before a very Agy team um and he came in and it was just a terrible season um ultimately finished but I think scored 56 goals conceded 121 it’s just I think the players I think um you know I’ve read quite a bit about this era in different books you know menu made the town and other books and stuff and I think the let’s say the players overall discipline outside of outside of the football club wasn’t that great I think there was a lot of perceive well not perceived quite a known Fair drinking which Not Unusual as time goes on in but drinking culture at the club and stuff so very very huge issues at the club he was such a well-respected guy I mean absolute statue of him as in James’s Park War though Alan Shir broke his goal scoring record for Newcastle yeah yeah war war Jackie absolute Legend and a um a distant relation cousin to the Charon such as football football up in the Northeast yeah yeah a sort of cousin I think cousin to their mom or something like that so yeah didn’t work and I think his health was failing as well during that um during that season it’s really starting to get to him um and I’ve read in John Cobalt’s book that you know he was one of the nicest men and you know very very sad that he couldn’t get it to work um and maybe at the time perhaps as far as it is concern I just said you know you’ve just that you quite said you know great players don’t necessarily make good managers um I mean he didn’t even have any any sort of managerial background when he came so sadly it didn’t work and um yeah passed away passed away quite young I think 66 in 1988 so yeah quite quite sad but yeah no not um he has to be down there just purely on his purely on his record um record alone which was um a win percentage of 56 games a win percentage of 19.6 just very quickly um highlights of that one going back to what I said about Paul Lambert Cole you and Norwich was the um the famous 101 defeat at Fulham on boxing day two days later by a 4-2 home win there you go Madness but there you go so Jackie Milburn unfortunately Jackie right we’re GNA go to some more polls we’re gonna go to another Blue Monday podcast era um manager we’re also going to talk about somebody who had all the toys but couldn’t play a very good game but I think you’re going to get some blowback here Dave you’ve got Paul juel above Paul C put them both in so you’ve got K 18 17 16 cook 14th and juel 13 about those two and why is Jo up that high in my defense not that high in my defense purely your first comment how could he not make use of the tools he was given how could he not and that’s basically only reason why I just I I could justif don’t justify I put Paul Joel above Paul um Paul Cook um March 20 um so March 21 to um December 21 44 games win percentage 29.5 29% yeah um 29.5% yeah um I remember speaking to you at the time and I think we all agree you thought yeah Championship yeah solid I’m the most guilty of it on the whole P well high on him well High thought be great this is a great appointment um to in his different has been slightly shafted by Wigan so from what we understand perhaps he didn’t realize the full financial implications at Wigan the season before um so didn’t didn’t wasn’t sack resign I think perhaps they could even perhaps afford him um so was kicking his heels a bit for that early part of that of that season um comes in um yeah we’re not know we’re not going to realistically we’re not going to get in the playoffs That season we finish um finish ninth I mean the quite interesting thing about that is that um he comes in literally a month is it before the Takeover but Dave lots of wink wink nudge nudge in all the interviews that he knew it was guaranteed and you know oh just you wait and see Demolition Man blah blah blah yeah yeah maybe and then of course once it happened the know he didn’t handle that well we’ve heard from Luke chambers that the live show that um maybe if you got him a uh you know away from a camera not with the bravado of football that he’d admit that he didn’t handle that too well no I agree I agree um it was yeah it was just it was just yeah a difficult diffic difficult time really but obviously that that close season um that yeah that close and this is why you know you look at the signings that close season to what to to where the Club is now and that you know the impact these players have had on the club so just a cross-section I’m sure there was loads but Walton Edmonson Burns bures um morsy chaplain and I’m sure there is obviously there are others I probably miss that have contributed over the last to the success of the last two seasons that makes it look worse now doesn’t it well exactly so this is why this is why with the tools at his disposal I’m sorry I just couldn’t I just couldn’t couldn’t justify I really couldn’t um it was just bizarre when it two wins in the first team games sacked when we were in 11th place um seven places off seven places of the playoffs um in the in the interviews Dave very dismissive just keep going just keep going don’t worry don’t question it just keep going it’s like yeah yeah look with that with the hand he was down and you do wonder of the likes of Joel and the likes of who I’m going to come on to Mick McCarthy okay divides opinion that probably divide the most opinion but you know given the tools that Paul Cook had you would think that come on um and there was sorts I’m not sure he you know there was thing about he bought you know his coaches with him um Francis Jeffers um and it just who again we’re sort of like unproven coaches and I think as well Dave you can play a bit of a hindsight game of where are they all now exactly EXA where of the club now yeah exactly exactly right and and look Cooks done well gone back to Chesterfield um just got them absolutely Blitz the um Blitz the National League this year so yeah Fair Play Back in the league I think he’s decent enough decent enough guy so yeah those highlights I think were those certainly those signings he made which with him away I really enjoyed um Portsmouth away I por the way Wick him away 40 you know the the 4-1 game um yeah I just think given the tools that his GI given the tools at his disposal yeah it was um say criminal but yeah he should have um it should have been I’ve already banned that word in the comments D I know I know so you got Paul juel um a little bit higher um really disasterous this wasn’t it yeah again but nothing to really been not a great deal to work with Diddy um 85 games Win percent this surprisingly High win percentage 34 30 just over 34% um win percentage um obviously replace the outgoing Roy Keane who we’ve just just spoken about came through the Liverpool Youth System again pretty decent track record as a player play a lot of games with Bradford city as a player but um famously um famously took um pip pip Town took them up in 98 99 and lyw did it again in 2004 2005 of Wigan so a track record great track record as a manager but no you know sadly for rips switch 15th in 1112 um and sacked after In My Memory Dave I checked out a little bit um at that time from doing other stuff in my life and I I remember going to going to one of the games and I was like like right so there’s six loone players half of them are playing out of what what is this what has he built but there you go um right let let me move you on Dave to one that really does um split opinion and did split opinion at the time you’ve got Jim magilton um next up loads of caveats to Melton obviously because he took the club at a time where you know it was quite a tricky job to do and it was almost the case of when he had no money he did better than when he did have money um type situation we should give a big plug to our amazing three-part interview in Co Fant someone who will tell the story way better than us on this is Jim magilton but you’ve come in although looking at the names that are left over Dave you’ve now we’re now going to people who’ve had discernable success in terms of top six finishes in division so talk to me about Jim splits opinion yeah um was a player about to I think about to kind of retire and move on I mean yeah this came a bit left field Joe Royal um I think always was going to be was going to be leaving and then yeah it’s kind of Dave sorry can I just come in immediately that’s such a good point you’ve made because there’s only one person and we all know who it is who’s coming way higher up the list who has a more storied playing history at the club and this is the first one where this is a great ipswitch toown player point what player I mean you know we we go bit to his bit to his player you know first signed on loan first sign on loan from what from was it 98 99 from sheff Wednesday I think wasn’t it sheff Wednesday run the team in the dressing room within about three weeks absolutely just class absolute class player wasn’t he you know far better than I thought not no no great Pace but what a football brain what what range you know what a pass through of the ball demanded high standards um yeah and and just respected right through the football club I think Jim Mill hence you know he got the um yeah Ben you know not kiding yourself he got the um you know he he was the no disrespect to him he was a cheaper option um came in um yeah very very little resources to be fair Club not in a not in a great state um 14th in 0607 um eth in 20078 the year we really smelling the administration not long before and trying to couldn’t wi away I mean that that well 2000 I think it’s at 78 season just couldn’t win an away game absolutely superb at home up there with the top six comfortably couldn’t win away bizarre bizar um and then um really sack then April after clearly we couldn’t we again missed out on the playoffs 2009 play playoffs again I said ironically after 3-2 home win home win over um over Norwich what I would say you know this always a narrative the Norwich thing great record he had against Norwich play played six won three drew two lost one couple of dubious goals in there Danny Haynes and a couple maybe one or two dubious goals in there but absolutely super record against Norwich um 148 games win percentage again surprisingly high is it I don’t know 37.8% um and the other highlight I’ve got to say other than I mean very very shortterm highlight and um but he was the manager at the time he did get Gio Des Santos on loan for for the very dying Embers of his managerial time at Portman road which um I would say up until season is probably our great our best ever loan player up until this last season you know where I’m going with that I know exactly where you’re going with that just just a nice man and and clearly just comes across you know you said you know the interviews we did with him in lockdown what a absolute gen absolute what a guy so um yeah the kind of manager you know you really really wanted to do he really wanted to do well given his history with the club but his hands were so tied we’re just going to speak to our lovely friends uh from Innovation Labs Innovation Labs providing co-working and Innovation hubs across East Anglia we’re the perfect place for remote workers Freelancers startups or innovators to do business our unique member Network creates extensive Business Development and collaboration opportunities hot desks are available from £20 a day or £99 per month with business coaching also available from £50 Innovation Labs turning your ideas into multi-million pound businesses Loc at in Stow Market if switch sub with new sites in fford Norwich and qupa opening soon well we talked about managers who’ve come into the club at a difficult time for various reasons I wonder if you’re going to tell me this guy had the most difficult um timing in terms of his job in comes John Duncan yeah yeah I wouldn’t no i’ I’d say he’s probably he’s up there with the most difficult time I think there’s one probably yeah yeah a yeah you’re you’re right so we replace Bobby Ferguson who again will a bit further down the line who will get who will get on to um appointed June 80 appointed June 87 um joined from Chesterfield after um I think he had Spells at sorry scun Thor and scunthorp and Harley Paul um ter football a striker mate D is just looking at his wikied you know when I Was preparing some of these I knew you know play for Spurs decent obviously in the in the top division think might have been when the season Spurs are relegated as well 7778 I think he might have played played in the second division then M M for Spurs um like 103 what was it 103 103 games um 53 yeah 103 games 53 goals I mean top division hell of it top it would have been both so Spurs had a season and whether he did play that Spurs had a season in the second division the season we won the cup um so possibly possibly all in the top division but not sure might have been shared um he was an interesting appointment the club will refused permission from Stoke City to appoint mck to approach even Mick Mills didn’t even you know that like that would happen these days and we knocked back by Stoke City wanted to approach MC Mills knock back um I’ve heard Mills speak about that so like I said he joins from he joins from Chesterfield difficult times um Ferguson had been sacked the season before would failed to get it was a very first year of the playoffs um and yeah we we got um it was was that I’ll get anyway we we didn’t get through the playoffs year one I’ll get to that under Ferguson and um so 878 and so fairly consistent then 87 88 finished 8th 88 889 8th 89 90 finished finished 9th so tell me what happens next with the next manager after John Duncan works against him as well yeah just couldn’t just couldn’t just couldn’t make that step um I mean highlight and was sacked sacked in um sacked in May um 990 highlights three three players really D and Atkinson DAV d d and Atkinson obviously the hatrick did Depart of dilyan Atkins in the hatrick against middleb we all yeah we all remember um massive story massive PR Sergo Bacha he was manager then Sergo Bacha orbe it if there is a a slight black mark to put against him um fairly imperious Sweeper for rusher in the World Cup played him on the left side of Midfield SE the Euros in 88 yeah yeah it would have been yeah yeah sorry World Cup sorry yeah I think he played no he played the World Cup he played in the 82 World Cup as well get to the final Russia in 88 yeah um van Baston van Baston yeah yeah and pass Renee Des of M and cross like don’t go there we can talk all day I could do 10 minutes on that goal and also and also the first return of John walk during his during his reign as well so so yeah and and very sadly passed away quite young October 2002 um just age age 73 so yeah um I think a decent and you know comes across really decent enough decent enough man but um yeah just couldn’t make that that close but just couldn’t make that step up um we’re coming up to the halfway mark and who better because we got two blue Monday pod era names to come as you can imagine one of them is quite near to the top of the list but the remaining one is and I still say the most talked about person in Blue Monday podcast history without Mick McCarthy there he is Dave can you unpick this in two minutes I’m not sure I can I still maintain sh me down I still maintain had we stuck had he stayed had we stuck with mccy I don’t think we’ have been relegated caveat to that we’ have had about 10,000 fans attending Portman road but anyway look that’s where we are um appointed November 2012 when we were in a sorry State and we were like we Five Points of drift Five Points of drift at the bottom and I mean Miracle work was in November so okay you’ve got it’s not like your five points and drifting no it’s outstanding Dave when you see the um high tide points totals of all the other teams well could have so easily got relegated incredible what he done so basically what he did and this perhaps manifest manifests itself and I’ll get to that in a minute over his the rest of his um term at the Club you know tighten I think you could safely say tightened things up um beginning with you remember un loan DJ Campbell what a great run I think scored in like five six consecutive games a one-nil win away at Birmingham incredibly set as up that season to finish um to finish 14th incredible um I just quickly just just just want quickly now 279 games win percentage of again too shabby 37 37.6% big content in the last couple of Seasons with that Winn percentage oh massive yeah um and Marcus Evans is clearly getting to the point where he realizes up against what’s going on in the second tier now what he’s prepared to back the club with isn’t turning the needle anymore is it no nowhere near nowhere near nowhere near just mentioned his playing career great playing career you know 57 caps were era um Euros 88 um um yeah Euros 88 World Cup 99 obviously Irish Ireland manager we won’t get into all that 96 2002 and spats with our previous manager and things like that we won’t get into that but yeah you’ve got to say that um you know what an achievement that first year um and again it just didn’t really pan out however we had the great 20134 is first fourth season again not too not too shabby finished ninth and we come to the 14 15 season just an anomaly amongst anything really um everything seemed to quite click especially early on in the season you say it’s anomaly it is trended in that direction you’re right you are right you are right um Daryl Murphy just incredible season 27 goals up with M gold R it was nice it was entertaining think we top up very briefly went top boxing day after 4-2 win at brenford and you think okay transfer window opening come on let’s you know let’s make a statement you know I think we were one maybe two decent players short to Fair signed Freddy Sears what 100,000 I think he paid for him great you know what what a first you the end of that season scored did score 10 goals or more I don’t know but made an impact but it just wasn’t enough and well we all know what happened um heartbreak in the I wonder if you’d have had him H Dave if we stopped we stopped there I don’t know some I think you’re right Ben someone offered him the job on December the 27th of 2014 or whatever honestly think you’re right I honestly I honestly think you’re right and it just when I mean culminating in it in the last season um you know his last season which is 2017 we were 16th in 2016 17 culminate 2017 to 18 left the club in April um you’re 12th position not going to get in the playoffs let’s face it the football was not of a how can I put this nicely a pretty standard let’s say it was fairly and what had happened Dave is he’d been so reliant on Daryl Murphy and then we had Tom Lawrence essentially carrying the team and then Martin waghorn and it was very much uh strong defensive setup and one star player doing everything wasn’t you got to say start of that season though you forget that start of that season on the wagon you Selena 52 games over remember the underlying metrics on all of those games the Mad win at mil wall the Mad home sun it’s just crazy could have won none of those games and won all of them just I need to I need to just say this I need to say this which puts it into context which the next manager we we’re coming on to um so this is how it went so 201314 I just go on to go the goals four and how things tightened up so 201314 goals 460 away 54 1415 playoff season 72 goals away 54 1516 53 goals away 51 and here’s the kicker 16 um yeah 16117 post season 4 48 goals over one a game yeah away 58 kind of put that into context I know it’s I know the cont is move the dials move but put it in the context of the last season we we’re going to get onto the man responsible for that day but we are yeah so so so just quickly just highlights um yeah 14 15 playoffs um and now and how would I describing what you’re doing now would you say ad hoc TV Pandit yeah he doesn’t seem to be um I think he’s fairly chilled isn’t he with with where he is and GRE saw him in this the airport going off to play golf I think a a welld deserved retirement after a long life in a long life absolutely what a life you know and you know what what success you know he did have obviously with Sunland and you know asso Ireland and playing career yeah um if I can say what the the goals the goals for and against I just read out if I can um I I call this the antidote it’s not the antidote because he obviously came a few seasons before before um Mick McCarthy but the antidote following on from Mick McCarthy um you going to introduce the next one Ben I am going to but normal podcast housekeeping here uh we’re still um running our nvpm promo you can have a look at the details of that down in the description for your Internet Security news check out the boys were’re busy um on Tuesday Morning this past week looking at the Premier League reactions and an interesting start for the town you can go and check back a live show um in the morning then more um kind of um sort sort of longer reaction in the evening once the dust has settled on those opening fixtures and we are hopeful that there’s going to be some Transfer News to talk about in the coming weeks and we will have a good look at that Dave the antidote to not having any goals there’s lots of goals and we are now hang on 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 we are now well we’re into the top 10 Here Comes Joe Royal another one who splits opinion I’m sure you’ve got him high up there because of the entertainment value some would argue he did a great job in testing times some would argue he fumbled a couple of promotion opportunities there yeah maybe for no no fault of his own so joined in October 2002 after the um departure of someone who is slightly higher on the list um to not a popular appointment Dave I remember to May 20 no I don’t think so despite again despite his his previous you know obviously a great player forever and goal scorer did back to back promotions imagine doing that hey with Man City yeah impossible that Dave apparently promotions yeah no exactly um I know you loved him at Olden in his Olden side you can name you can name that side now I know you I know you can um and join joined us a year after having the season out of the game um I think again famously we we relegated Man City that night with the um think the um what was that the Martin Royce of diving header wasn’t it I think I remember that remember that remember that really well the Fifth Place season um I say previous success at Olden won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995 I believe that still the last someone will shoot me down the last English manager to do that I believe anyway lamp no Lampard didn’t win it with Chelsea did he know I think so think so um and look if any if ever someone did come at a time so he came we’re Town pretty much well the season out really pretty much enter Administration um obviously we’d got relegated um season or two before um player sales going out we all know that you know staff redundancies and I made a comment here I think he did absolutely brilliantly um with the squad and just played such an exciting brand of open attacking football I mean some games were like basketball games it’s just nuts some of those games you know remember six fours and crazy crazy stuff crazy Stu that do you subscribe to the narrative that West Ham were a bit of a like a unicorn freak Club to be you know like when we’ve had Newcastle and Aston Villa in the champion to lose to them in the playoffs twice is a bit wrong time wrong place yeah it was I mean one of those Seasons I think we finished I can’t quite remember must been 0405 I think we finished 12 points ahead of them and you say yes did he fumble it I mean it was just again with injuries remember that injury I think we were absolutely flying with bent and coochie up front That season um what was it must been January February 05 and then suddenly coochie I think is relatively freak injury um he’s out for a month you just can’t can’t replace him I think we bought was that the year we bought scof Croft back in I believe for a spell and it just didn’t just didn’t work and he was a little bit unlucky and again that was um just just got pipped by I think by Wigan for the for the last playoffs spot um when and that certainly I’m speaking 0405 obviously perhaps car some mental scars from West Ham the season before and yeah so I guess a little bit a little bit unlucky but Christ almighty the football the excitement was off the chart I must quickly do this again the Go Just For The Goal so 0203 480 away 64 then it begins against nuts 034 484 away 72 72 72 relegation stuff that is it 84 though um 0405 or he tightens up 4 85 away 56 and um I think I worked it out famously um 056 in that close season we lost Tommy Miller Darren bent Chef Kikuchi and I think goal scorers yeah 52 League goals so hence um slightly different 453 away 66 um and yeah just again that season hands were tired that’ all gone oh um tell you who else went that postseason what a brilliant keeper Kelvin Davis who was absolutely Davis although 72 goals against would say otherwise but anyway I just just love the guy um so yeah sadly um sadly he was he was on his way obviously highlights two consecutive playoff seasons and I will I’ve got a highlight just two games from that um he could have could be loads couldn’t it but the the thing 0203 Sheffield United Dale Roberts had just passed away um you know we come back to win 3-2 P 10 men Pablo being sent off first half and just that fabulous I know we speak about it a lot that Wigan game 20045 probably you know just The Narrative of the game foggy cold Portman road but um still I think the greatest ever goal I’ve seen from a away player at Port so yeah um you gotta love you gotta love Joe Royal and just brand of football but again you know just I’ve got him that high just basically for what he achieved and what he had really Ben um you’ll be really pleased with me I was working with Dean Ashton quite a bit a couple of years ago and I said Dino do you remember a game um you played for crew against dips like oh not entirely sure I went it was it was 64 I think you scored a couple and I sat down with him um in ITV and he talk me we just watched the highlights and it was just a complete Madness wasn’t it coming up on Blue Monday whoever you have in one and whoever you have in two is okay it’s fine it’s just a matter of opinion but when Dave WhatsApp me the final list my jaw hit the floor because David Diamond does not have [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. You'll never convince me anything else other than Roy Keane being the worst thing ever to happen to us. Yes, even worse than Lambert and Hurst!

  2. Paul Lambert: “His highlight, 2019-20 league one manager of the month” 😂😂. Dave had to dig deep for that — fantastic work! Haha.
It certainly demonstrates how far we’ve come in just a few years! 💙🎉

  3. 1. Sir Bobby (European silverware)
    2. Sir Alf (league title)
    3. Think Burley just about edges this still from… (consistently Top 6 before going up then 5th in the Prem)
    4. McKenna. (Back to back, obvs. But at a lower level)
    5. Royle (The era I fell in love with the club properly, scoring for fun with Bent, Kuqi and Miller. Shame we couldn't defend! Should have gone up the season Kuqi got injured)
    6. McCarthy (Had been out of the top flight for longer, nothing to work with and got us to the playoffs somehow. Shame about the season or two after that)
    7. Lyall (Div 2 title, then kept us up)
    8. McGarry (Div 2 title, but seems to have left under a bit of a cloud)
    9. Magilton (Did well with what he had, then had no idea what to do with money when the takeover happened. Still the last manager to win a derby).

    10. Ferguson (Tough act to follow + financially hamstrung)

Don't know well enough about to fairly rate:
    Scott Duncan
    John Duncan
    Jackie Milburn

    14. Cook (Did the demolition job that gave McKenna a squad to build from. Couldn't get a tune out of them)
    15. Jewell (Bumped up for the manner of his departure; "I can't do this, go get Mick." So some credit for knowing his limitations)
    16. Lambert (PR Paul. Took us down with a whimper, then had a good few months at the start of the League 1 season results wise but we didn't LOOK convincing, then we imploded)
    17. Keane (Start of the proper disconnect between fans and club, never fit with the club culture)
    18. Hurst (Right idea to appoint a young up and coming coach [see McKenna!] but a disastrous choice of which one)

…and yes, it was the last league game at Ninian Park. I was there too.

  4. If we're taking into account the calibre and character of the person and the impact that this character has on the lasting legacy of the club, then it's:
    1. Sir Bobby
    18. Roy Keane

  5. 1. Robson
    2. Ramsey
    3. McGarry
    4. S Duncan
    5. Royle
    6. McKenna
    7. Lyall
    8. Burley
    9. Mccarthy
    10. Ferguson
    11. Magilton
    12. Cook
    13. Keane
    14. Jewell
    15. Milburn
    16. J Duncan
    17. Lambert
    18. Hurst

  6. Agree. Keane the worst Ive seen. By the second or third home game it was obvious he had lost the dressing room and the players didn't want to be there.

  7. As a supporter of a certain vintage,Roy Keane was awful, if you need proof, he's never managed a club since.MM did a great job,he came in with us on 7pts from 13 games and comfortably kept us up.In the play off season lost Mcgoldrick in January, massive loss. And the following year,DM,Bishop and Ryan Fraser barely played otherwise we would have been play offs again. Last 2 years essentially he gave up trying to get us up and it all went a bit sour.I would have him above Joe Royle because Royle inherited better players.Q,does Mick Magivern not count as a manager, because he was dreadful.

  8. Biggest point of disagreement – Dos Santos was the best loan signing pre Omari. Outrageous. List as long as your arm of better loan signings than GDS – Reuser, Hirst, Peralta, Magilton, Bullard (he was awful as a perm, but loan was amazing), Fraser, Lawrence, Williams and I’d even go Sarmiento.

  9. The dark lord definitely the worst for me. He blew all the money Evan’s had given him on mostly dud players and and when left, so many players were approaching being out of contract.
