Edmonton Oilers TRADE To Select Sam O’Reilly 32nd Overall

In tonight’s video I react and discuss the Edmonton Oilers trading a 2025 OR 2026 first-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers to select Forward Sam O’Reilly at the NHL Entry Draft in Las Vegas. This is kind of a confusing move as I am not high on O’Reilly or tying up TWO draft picks to select him. What are your thoughts on this trade Oil Country? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below! 🧡💙 #nhl #oilers

hello Oilers fans Austin here and welcome to a post-draft video reaction now I wasn’t expecting to make a video like this because the Oilers did not have a first round draft pick as we all know the Adam Henrik Sam Carrick trade the Oilers had traded what would have become the 31st overall pick uh in that deal for Henrik and Carrick to Anaheim however uh last minute right before Philly was going up to pick number 32 the Oilers made a trade they have uh well I’ll just quickly show you what it is Elliot Freeman tweeted 32 from Philadelphia goes to Emon for a first in either 2025 or 2026 and the Oilers with the 32nd overall pick picked Sam O’Reilly from the London Knights and now listen uh Sam riy might end up being a great player for the Emon Oilers might be a good NHL player uh this is a player that I did not have ranked in my first round at all this is a player that I probably would not have moved up as much as the Oilers did to try and snag at 32 this is a very interesting confusing move for the Oilers and Jeff Jackson you honestly probably could have got Sam O’Reilly like you could have traded the 64th overall pick into like the 4550 range if you really really wanted him I really didn’t think that he was going to be a first rounder but again I’m not a professional NHL Scout but what bothers me the most about this trade as an Oilers fan is that because it’s a first in either 2025 or 2026 that means until they specify which year they want to give up the pick I don’t know the full conditions yet so this video could age very poorly and when it does I’m sure everyone will let me know in the comments comments but right now that means the Oilers have two draft picks tied up in 25 and 26 that they cannot use as a trade chip to improve their team at any point like if the if the decision on which year this pick will be moved to Philadelphia is not decided by let’s say the trade deadline in the upcoming season if the Oilers want to make a trade with someone to improve their team they will not be able to use their 2025 or 2026 first rounder in play because both of those picks are currently tied up in this trade just to select Sam O’Reilly at 32 overall it’s a very very confusing trade unless the Oilers have more up their sleeve they might be working on things behind the scenes of course they’re looking to um move some salary cap Jeff Jackson has made it known that they could either buy out Jack Campell maybe the team’s going to trade him he’s never outright said that they’re going to trade Jack Campbell but the Oilers it is known that they are trying to free up cap space they are going to be making some moves by July 1st but this specific trade at the uh draft tonight I don’t know man I don’t know how I feel about it I don’t think this is a deal that the oers needed to make at this moment I think Sam O’Reilly is fine but there were better players available I personally think if I was the mton Oilers if you’re trading to get into that top 32 I would have went with Andrew basa or EO chernishov I would have went with Ryder Richie if they wanted a centerman I would have went with Teddy sta they could have picked Cole Hudson uh Charlie elck Lucas Pon I had all these players ranked above Sam O’Reilly and again I don’t think that this you know I’m not trying to be disrespectful to Sam O’Reilly welcome to the mton Oilers I I’m happy that you’re here this is just a very strange trade I don’t think I like it on initial view I try and be very positive on the channel I just finished an extremely grueling 4H hour long live stream going through the first round because of how long it takes for the NHL draft to just complete their picks and make trades and it is way way over stretched for time and then the Oilers cap it off with this type of deal and now my brain is all jumbled into Jello at the moment what did you think about the trade what do you think about the Oilers moving forward do you think there’s more that’s coming for them let me know your thoughts in the comment section below and uh as always I will have more uploads coming tomorrow when the Oilers complete their total draft I will do a full draft breakdown of every single player and pick that they made and of course if there’s more trades you you are right here you’re in the right place for breaking news for mton Oilers related content and then Sunday I have my first sponsored video coming out and the entire content for Sunday’s video focuses on free agent targets players I think the Oilers should be targeting in free agency on July 1st and then on July 1st I will be live streaming free agent frenzy from morning to evening it’s going to be an absolute blast I cannot wait for free agent frenzy um but as always I want to thank everyone for your support for everyone that tuned into the live stream tonight thank you thank you so much truly means the world I know it was kind of a a slog to get through but you know we did it together and I appreciate that I have the best community in the hockey world and uh I hope to see you very soon make sure to like make sure to subscribe tell someone that you love them and always fight like Ben fight like a kid we’ll see you soon oil country take care

  1. A 32 from Philly to Edmonton for a first pick in 2025-2026 is basically close to the same pick for 2024 if Edmonton continues their success.

  2. I don’t mind this deal as much as I thought. By trade deadline next season we will know what pick/overall it will be because it’s top 12 protected it’s very likely we lose next years pick, we can trade Sam at the deadline and the oilers took a bet that he would exceed the value he was drafted at. Teams also get a guy a year into development which is also a factor.

  3. I have absolutely no idea about young draftpicks like this but maybe it was both Holland and Jackson combined that influenced eachother on weird decisions? If so, let's hope the new GM will do things his own way. As I said though I've no idea but I trust Austin

  4. Final central ranking at 24, Button had him at 32. Comparable: Philip Daneault. Intelligent two-way 3C, potential PK specialist. This doesn't seem like a typical Oilers pick, hence I think it's great.

  5. London is a factory the same way Ohio state & lsu are for WRs in the nfl. They just don’t miss. They for decades and decades have continued to produce players that are stone cold pros. Next to identical numbers to that of Easton Cowan last year who has now blossomed into one of the most coveted prospects outside of the nhl. He will likely be givin that same opportunity assuming Cowan graduates to the nhl. The last 10 Stanley cup champions have had a London knight on their roster. Sam oreilly for a first is going to look like a genius move this time next year

  6. I am a London Knights fan and season ticket holder. Toronto thought Cowan was a stretch last year and he was the OHL – CHL MVP this year. The Hunters mold talent. Defence produces Offence. Something a lot of players are missing is everyone needs to be responsible defensively. Look what Dale did with the Capitals in half a year. Returned to the Knights for many reasons including family and the passion to help the young players reach their goals. Remember Bouchard and Corey Perry are Knights.

  7. I think it is a bad trade for the oilers. They could have gotten their player in the second round. Why trade a first round pick for him

  8. I think it's a weird move because the oilers have needs and we're kinda in a win now mode… So trading one of our future 1st rounders is odd considering we could've used them to get a player to help us win now
