what a weekend ahead the last 16 games all live across the talk Sport Network Saturday Switzerland Italy Germany against Denmark Sunday England Slovakia then Spain Georgia Monday mbappe and France against Belgium also Portugal will they start Ronaldo against Slovenia and on Tuesday Romania and against the Netherlands and Austria against turkey all of it all of it across the to Sport Network you will not miss a trick Simon is alongside me here in dorf sadly for the last time but we’ll catch up again Simon next week uh certainly on Monday when you’re back in London delighted to say this man would normally be with you and I in London on a Friday morning and of course I’m talking about arel Invincible former England Defender Martin Kon joins us live Mr Keon good morning where did we find you I’m in Frankfurt Jim uh great to see you guys um I’ve been traveling all over the place here of course I’ve done six games I’ve seen the French play the German side play I’ve seen the Belgium team play uh and of course I’ve watched England with great interest I’m doing the England game which is the highlights package for the BBC next match um so I’m all over Slovakia I watch them play against Ukraine and I thought they um yeah I like the way they play gy as a team they they’re very well organized it’s going be interesting to see how England who are are stuttering shall we say in this competition but nonetheless It’s a Wonderful opportunity the way the draw is unfolded when you’ve got France Spain Germany Portugal the other side of the draw this is a great opportunity forland oh it is indeed we’re going to talk about England Slovakia and Slovakia uh specifically this morning with you Martin uh Mr Jordan is to my right it’s good to hear the uh the voice of the nice to see you mate yes F you’re looking well I didn’t know about the Underpants thank you very much that’s that’s here you go I did not know that actually Martin I’ve Just Seen A German gentleman take 13 pairs of Simon’s Underpants out of Bin over there but he’s he’s won the day hasn’t if you want to look at it that way um Martin what do you think of the tournament so far who’s stood out for you well there hasn’t really been one player I for the I can only talk about the teams that I’ve I’ve watched I haven’t seen Spain and Portugal um I’m being told Spain are playing you know quite wonderful football I’ve been a little bit disappointed with the French uh mbappe is kind of Phantom of the Euros up to now that mask is uh we’re seeing a different player aren’t we if he comes out behind that mask we might the tournament might lighten up for France but they they’re a bit like England final third lack of creativity getting it right I think Jim we’re spoiled in the Premier League a little bit and I’m I’m looking at it from a tactical point of view obviously I’m doing the coons and it’s like no one’s really developing the play I thought Germany was fantastic in the first two games and I see Switzerland has been a real issue the Italy Switzerland game and we could end up playing one of those if we beat Slovakia could be a massive game for us because I Switzerland is like is Bayern lusen gy basically with uh with jaer in that Midfield he’s put his identity on the team and the way that they play the system um they much they look much better drilled than than the England team right now I think it’s about Gareth Southgate really sorting out his tactics giving the right message the players look a little bit confused and if we can if we can sort that out J we can go a long way in this tournament I thought we were much better in the svenia game in the second half of the match the way we set ourselves out so that’s that’s the challenge for England but there’s some great teams in this at the moment but people like Belgium I watched them de bruy Lukaku not clicking in the final F it’s it seems to be like a disease that’s in a lot of these national teams it’s not just with the England team Martin are you surprised though I mean obviously there’s been a lot of observ and some of them from from from pundits and footballers that have played in the England teams before about the performance of England we’ve probably seen um 30 minutes against the serbians of an England side looking like vaguely what we want them to look like and perhaps 40 minutes in the second half where they played with a Tempo and urgency that you’d at least expect as a basic are you surprised I mean Iceland gave us a little window into how we were currently playing and everyone put that down to a moment in time but there just seems to be a Mala in the side are you surprised by it you know I I I watched very closely what what Germany did they made very few changes coming into the tournament just the two that they made with the Champions League players whereas we made all sorts of changes I don’t think we used those friendly games in a very good way at all we should have created a rhythm there we should have been going into those Friendlies with a team that we were going to start the tournament with that’s what I’ve learned from the from this and that we are now trying to fix our machine sort of halfway through but that’s okay as long as we learn quickly um there has been a lot of criticism of the team and I think that goes with the territory I think when I played um and I look back to particularly 92 um I don’t think any of the press will look back there with any fondness the way that they treated Graeme Taylor and the level of um you think of the back the newspapers in those days turn it P and all the rest yeah I don’t think he ever really recovers so we’re not at the levels of that in terms of criticism I think it’s because we expected the team to go on and win this and we have not seen that in the first few games but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen it doesn’t mean that we can’t go on and it’s about the manager I feel now fixing finding the solutions for the players we seen we’re seeing Deon rice give the ball away um because he hasn’t got any enough options in Midfield um we’re seeing yeah Bellingham running into where were you on the Luke sh where were you on the Luke Shaw debate Martin because everyone’s sort of pinning their hopes to the fact that Luke Shaw is going to come back into the side and give balance to the side first and foremost does a fallback really make that big a deal and secondly how can he come into a side when he hasn’t kicked a ball in Anger for 4 months and really make an impact you’re really on a wing and a prayer there aren’t you I wouldn’t have picked him I I I think when it comes down when you’ve not been available that long and actually by the way it’s a concern it’s a hamstring injury I think he should be back at his Club trying to find out why he’s been out for 153 days with a hamstring iny he cannot possibly come in never mind Club level this is another level now I don’t think he he’ll you expect to see him on Sunday against Slovakia Martin do you think Shaw feature if he’s fit I think to justify what G’s done he might just throw him in but we don’t have anybody mandering down the left hand side we’re we we’re poorly balanced you know I’m even hearing people actually on England Martin the other day a man you know well Emanuel P um of course World Cup winner with France and uh an Arsenal Legend like yourself he joined us on the show and he dished out about England as to where his mind was regarding Southgate and the team have a listen yes today you know I watched the game and after the French game as well which I was bored as well on the first game so it was a very difficult day yesterday yeah but having said that Emanuel England have outdone the French England won their group the French didn’t that’s why you know that’s what I said you know remember what I said about the players Vision you know the what they want is to go through to be qualified to go until the end they don’t care about the critics of course we all love you know to win games and competition and to play perfectly you know on the pitch we are romantic as well you know the players but sometimes you cannot do that so the most important is the qualifications and listen they finished first England and they didn’t play very well the the the first three games but they finish first that means they open they didn’t deserve to finish first and they were much they were not better than England so they have a big margin in front of them and and honestly playing a qualification game is completely different than playing a group stch game so Martin that was p and he’s right they finished first so despite all the noise are the stars aligning for Southgate in England with this draw only if he can work out a proper structure at the base of the England’s Midfield Jim we we are spoiled really in the Premier League we watch Pepe pep and we watch Aleta and Klo and the modern day game is about numbers in Midfield and when you when you put a a Defender into Midfield in the shape of stones we have all these options this is the confusing thing we could do it with Walker we could do it with trippier we just need to walk into Midfield and all of a sudden the opposition have to take a step back because we can send someone further forward at the moment Bellingham is racing forward and we’re not getting a good enough possession of the ball at the base structure of our Midfield then in the wide positions we’re not getting enough from um our fullbacks so none of these really good players at the top of the pitch that’s why Kane is dropping off because he’s waiting for the ball waiting it never comes we’re losing in possession of the ball because rice hasn’t got the options so this is now down to the manager this comes back to the manager to simplify things for them yeah and make that and make that change Jim up against us Slovakia they a Midfield which has uh 236 caps among them this is a Midfield that like is well oiled they know what to do leoka who plays in that Midfield play from Napoli he’s a wonderful little player in there and Duda um another player alongside him they they’re either in a two or one six and they jym they work beautifully around around each other Armfield not quite doing that at bellingham’s on the outside watching and he’s and he feels fatigued because he’s not he’s not engaged it we’ve got to start getting the best from him and I would say having worked on to the great AR benger he would take it he takes it personally he would say if we’re not playing well it’s me it’s not the players now I see Bellingham taking nine eight touches of the ball I see the basics Are One Touch two touch football when we had that goal that was just allowed in the last game against linia that was great incisive passing three four passes bang were in the back of the net that’s that is really A View to what we should be doing using the ball more efficiently yeah like fewer touches on the ball people are running with the ball and not knowing what to do with it and that has to be sorted out by the manager understood Martin understood uh Martin
