Good evening. I’m Camden Cohn and our sports ticker is brought to you by the 1890 initiative. Earlier today, Nebraska Athletics announced the 2024 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class. The six member class includes Jordan Hooper from women’s basketball, Carl Myerscough with men’s track and field Virginia stayer for Nebraska volleyball. Ndamukong Suh for football Mary Weatherholt for women’s tennis, and Emily Wong with women’s gymnastics. All six members of the 2024 class were either an individual national champion or the national or conference player of the year in their respective sports. Each Hall of Famer was an All-American during their Husker career, with the class combining for a total of 26 All-America awards. The class will be inducted in a ceremony on October fourth. Husker soccer gained a transfer today from a hometown name. Lucy McCabe is transferring from Maryville to Nebraska. McCabe adds experience and depth to the backfield and graduated from Lincoln, Pius High School and finally, the U.S. Men’s National team is continuing group play today in the Copa America tournament as they play Panama. Currently, the US and Panama are tied at one at the half on Fox. Our sports ticker is sponsored by the 1890 initiative. Six to shoot Kelly for three. You betcha. Huskers take their first lead of the game with 30s left. Here’s the two two pitch. Called strike three. Breaking ball outside corner. Make it an even ten for McConaughey and the Hoosiers. Leave two more here in the top of the seventh. Now the three two and Brant Wall swings and hammers it deep center field. She’s gone. Home run! Got the big debate right at 8:00, so we’ll get you fired up for that. You’re going to watch any of that? Of course. Are you kidding me? You got it. You got to. I mean, for strictly entertainment purposes only, you have to watch it. I mean, I don’t know how you can’t. The Twitter world will be abuzz, right? There’s certain moments in your life where you’re like, man, I wish Twitter was alive for that. And this is gone. This is one of them, right? You’re excited because you’re going to be able to watch it. Commercial break. Pull up your phone and be like, haha, what are people saying? Like, I can’t wait. I mean, it’s almost like, you know, a car accident is going to happen. You go, I’ll sit here and watch this. I did it could be that tonight. So we’re here for the next couple of hours. Looking forward to chatting with all of you. We’ll talk some Husker football, particularly in our number two, but we’re going to hear from Jordan Hooper, one of the new members of the Hall of Fame class. Coming up here in a couple of minutes. Jessica, who’s not going to be with us tonight, did catch up with Jordan earlier today on her fine honor. But hey, the headliner of this class is the big fella 93, Ndamukong Suh and, you know, I’m going to stay with this. Jeremiah said this on the air at the time. I think in 2009, he was the best player in the country that year. And what a dominant, dominant player who won almost all those big national awards at the end of that season. What a dominant college football player. Yeah, I mean, he was one of the best I’ve ever been around at any level. Not just not just college, but in the NFL, too. And, I mean, I have a great Sioux story. So my freshman year, we had a bunch of guards get hurt during training camp and so Bo pulled me and he’s like, hey, you ever played guard? I was like, no, but I’ll try it. And so I get thrown in there with the twos and all of a sudden I hear, hey, twos versus ones, twos versus ones. And so I run into the huddle and I’m all excited, and we break the huddle, and I run up to the line, and I go to put my hand in the dirt and Sue’s across from me, and he looks me dead in the eyes and goes, who the f are you? And I was just like. And I just put my hand down. And Greg, when I tell you he demolished me all practice long like I could do nothing. I wasn’t strong enough to beat him. I wasn’t physically, like, mentally like, savvy enough to get around him. He just threw me around all day long. I go home, I type an email to my dad. I’m like, dad, at least I’m going to get my education. I can’t play with these dudes like I made a mistake, blah blah blah blah blah. And then I go on and like end up getting like demoted to the threes. The next day, obviously. And then I watch him go out all year long and beat up on everyone in college football. And I was like, maybe I’ll be okay. Maybe I’ll be all right. Here’s a good story from, from Dabo Swinney. The Clemson head football coach. You know, Nebraska played at the end of that. Oh nine season, Clemson in the Gator Bowl. And as Dabo tells it early in the game, Sue’s blowing everything up. Dabo goes back to his offensive line and goes guys. And they’re going, coach. It’s not going to happen. Like what do you mean? He goes, we ain’t blocking him today. So there’s Dabo. Dabo Swinney and the Huskers ended up winning that Gator Bowl. So even the Clemson starting offensive line that year in 2009 felt like they couldn’t block him. I remember his dominant performance in the title game against Texas, where he just threw people around left and right, including Colt McCoy, just really one of the most dominant college players of all time and so well deserved for him. He’s only eligible this year. People won’t be going. Why isn’t he in the hall yet? He only became eligible this year because you have to wait so many years after you retire to become eligible to go to Nebraska Hall of Fame. So wonderful player, and certainly a guy that I think still thinks pretty highly of the university. He made a pretty big financial gift. Jeremiah, back to the school when he graduated using his rookie contract to donate some money back. So I think he still feels good about this place. Yeah. I mean, I got to lift for four years in a weight room that had a giant mural of Ndamukong Suh up there, right. And there you go. You got to just realize when you he set a great example for when you leave this place. You’re not done with this place. And I think that carried on for a lot of giving back. Any way that you can, whether it’s financially or with your time or doing whatever you can to give back to this place and leave it better than you found it, because that’s the goal of anytime you leave a university or anytime you leave a sports team is, I hope I made that place better than when I walked in the door. He, after that zero nine season, won the Outland, the Lombardi, the Bronko Nagurski, the Chuck Bednarik. He was All-American. And then the next year’s first year in the NFL, he was rookie of the year. So, I mean, he transformed it over into that. How hard and how difficult is it for a position to play that tackle position to dominate that way? That’s really hard to do, right? I mean, because usually you’re getting you’re getting double teamed a lot, right? Yeah. I mean, usually you see that kind of domination from an end, right? That’s one on one with the tackle and all that stuff. And because you can game plan an interior guy. I mean, I remember when we played Aaron Donald in 2016 with the Vikes, we were like, listen, I know our protection schemes are meant to go to a linebacker, but we’re just turning it to 99, right? Like we’re just wherever he’s at. And for a long time in Detroit, that was what Sue was. Was it didn’t matter what the defense was or anything was like. We’re turning it to him. And the fact that he still dominated the way he did, you know, was just incredible to watch. And the leaps he took every single year. And also the way he matured, you know, he had that kind of that streak there for a while of being quote unquote, a dirty player. And, you know, he just played the game with a ton of passion. But, you know, you saw him mature over the years and turn into a leader and turn into a chance to go and get on these defense lines and kind of make a Super Bowl title run and those type of things. And, you know, watching the evolution of his game, I really wish I would have got to play against him one more time in the NFL. But I just never had the chance. You know, he he did not have a great start to his Husker career. He was recruited by the Bill Callahan staff decided to stay. And I think he was really glad he did. I think he really enjoyed as pretty much everybody who played for Bo Pelini enjoyed playing for Bo Carl. I think Carl was Carl, his position coach. Carl was the D-line coach. Yeah. So you know, I think he enjoyed that. I mean, he certainly was around the program a lot when Bo was the head coach still here, like I said, he’s given back financially to the school, to the athletic department. It’s going to be great to have him back here. We do have calls and texts into him. We’re going to get him on the program at some point in time. Didn’t connect today when I reached out to him, but we will. So we’ll have him on, once we come back from our hiatus next week. Again, we’re going to be dark. The studio will be dark next week. We’re going to play some greatest games next week. But back on July the 8th, so we’ll get him on at that point in time. We’re going to hear from Jordan Hooper. Terrific women’s basketball player, we’re going to chat next week with Emily Wong, who was a dominant gymnast at Nebraska. And this is just a really, really good class. And so we’ll be talking to some of these people, as the coming weeks come up. But Ndamukong, certainly the biggest name in the class, the biggest guy in the class and the biggest name in the class, but you know, I really appreciate the fact, Jeremiah, that he didn’t leave after a coaching change and that he probably ended up being really got better because of his decision to stay. And I think one of Bo’s first things when he became head coach was to get in touch with the big fella and say, hey, I think I can make you better. And Bo was just coming off leaving an LSU program that had really good defensive linemen as well. So Bo had a good story to tell. Ndamukong yeah, and that line too I mean he was playing with some top notch individuals. I mean, talking about Barry Turner, Pierre Allen, Jared Crick was coming into his own. You know, sometimes if you leave something like that and you become the only good defensive lineman on your team, then it’s really hard to generate those pressures because you can’t just turn to you and not worry about everyone else. But man, with that defensive line that year, in 2010 or 2000, the oh 910 season. Right? I mean, you talk about a disruptive group. It was pick your poison. Who do we want to slide to? Let’s okay, we’re going to Baylor. We’re going to slide to Su. And then Crick just rips him to shreds. And then Barry Turner and Pierre Allen rolling off the edges. I mean he was just so dominant. I think Bo laid out a plan of how he was going to develop him. I think James Dobson did a great job with him in the in the weight room, getting him bigger, faster, stronger, like, and I think he laid all that out for him and that allowed him to come back and come back and dominate the way he did. One more quick, one more quick story. It’s just too funny not to tell. We were playing, I believe it was Texas Tech or Iowa State that year, I can’t remember, and Sue got a personal foul and came off on the sideline. And Pelini comes over to Carl and he’s like, I want him out, Carl, get him out of there. He’s doing this. He’s doing that. And Carl is calmly as I’ve ever seen. Carl turns to Bo and goes, I need him, and then just turn back around and Bo just like, bar it, like turned and walked away. And it was just such a moment of like, yeah, that’s really true. We do need him out there. If memory serves, I think Bo left that LSU program with Glenn Dorsey. I think he was that big stud on the defensive line for the for the Bayou Tigers when Bo was down at LSU. Then they won that National championship and then Bo came to Lincoln. You know, the Blackshirts. You’re right. That oh nine Blackshirts. I would put them up with about any any Blackshirt group in Husker history. They were that dominant because of all those great names that you said, a handful of NFL guys. And then of course, right after that, I mean, Prince was on that secondary with obviously a great player. Alfonso dinner was one of the other DBS back there. But then right after that, here comes Lavonte David, another All-American player still at it in the NFL. Lavonte once his playing days and his clock ends. He’ll go into this Hall of Fame as well. The production that he has put in in the NFL for the size of player. He is because Lavonte is not very big, is absolutely remarkable. One of the most incredible things I think the career that Lavonte David has put in, and you certainly were a teammate of him as well. Yeah, I mean his athletic prowess, like you felt his athleticism when you were out on the field with him and he was a true sideline to sideline guy. And that’s what’s really made him so valuable in the NFL is his ability to cover running backs, cover tight ends and still have the ability to come down and thump you. I mean, his first start here, he kind of got thrust into starting that first year because I think Compton got hurt. Sean Fisher got hurt, and we had a couple guys get here in camp, and he had like 22 tackles in his first debut. And but he had like 16 mental errors but like and it was like you could get mad at him cause it was a mental error. But he had a TfL and he was just like, yeah, this dude’s just this guy’s football. Like awareness is just through the roof of his nose for the football, trusting his eyes, triggering an attacking like he was the full package. You know, it’s funny you say that because I, you know, an interview, Bo, after every game and you know, Lavonte would put up those big tackle numbers and I’d go, man 16. And he would inevitably go, yeah, but he made a bunch of mistakes too. So he would always point that out. You know as a fan you’re going I’m looking at the stat sheet. Bo looks at it from a coaching perspective, which he should. And he’s like, yeah, he blew this assignment and assignment as well. So it is a bit of give and take. But great news today for endowment going to be put into that Husker Hall of Fame. We’re going to talk more about that as the program moves along. Will the newest class of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class has been announced. One of the newest members is going to be inducted this year is Jordan Hooper, who we just had a chance to talk to back in January who had her jersey retired inside pinnacle Bank arena. Jordan, joining us now Jordan congratulations man. What a year. It’s been. Thank you. Yeah. This has been like I said earlier, a whirlwind just a whirlwind of events. But it’s really awesome. And it’s really fun really fun to be able to go down to Lincoln twice in one year. Well, how did you find out? What was the reaction when you when you found out? Yeah. So Amy Williams actually, called me coach Williams called me, I was I don’t remember what I was doing that day. I was doing something else. So I couldn’t get her first phone call. And so I called her right back. And so then she told me the news, and it was. It was really it was awesome. Then I had softball that night, so. But roller coaster of emotions. And then I had to go play softball. Did you guys win? Yeah we did. We’re pretty good You like playing softball, no, it’s not my favorite thing. I’m not. I’m not very good at it. I just kind of go where he tells me to go, but it gets me out of the house on Thursdays, so that’s the main thing. Oh, that’s amazing. Well, you know, you look at the class that’s being inducted and again, every year it’s just so many great athletes that have come through Nebraska athletics. What does that mean to you to join this class and to join such a prestigious Hall of Fame here at Nebraska? Yeah, I mean, this class is I mean, I know Emily Wong for sure. And then obviously Ndamukong Suh like that’s awesome, I don’t know the others. Maybe if I see them, I’ll know them. But I don’t know them personally or anything. But I mean, it’s a great class. It’s going to be amazing to get to meet the new ones and get to see the ones that I do know. So it’ll it’ll be a fun weekend for sure. Well, we chatted with you before the Jersey retirement and you didn’t know how you were going to feel, but what a what an awesome day, awesome ceremony, what were the emotions when you’re going through? You get the reception from Husker Nation, and then you see the 35 going up to the rafters. What can you take me back to? How you felt in those emotions? Yeah, overwhelming. Like overwhelming pride in myself of the team that got me there. Because it wasn’t just me. Like it was all my team. The coaches, everybody like. And they were all there, which was even cooler. Like, I got to see a bunch of teammates that I hadn’t seen in a really long time, and that was really awesome. And obviously having the coach, most of the coaching staff made it back for it, which was really cool as well. But I mean, Jeff and Matt were there, I mean everybody, it was just overwhelming pride to be in Nebraska and have my jersey up there, and it was it was overwhelming, like totally overwhelming. All my emotions just came out and I knew they were going to, but I just didn’t know how. And I don’t know, I can’t remember a lot of what I said. I haven’t watched it yet. I need to kind of watch what I said, because I don’t remember. I just kind of blacked out and just said whatever I felt like saying, and I hope it was hope. It was good enough. A lot of people said it was okay, but I don’t know. I haven’t had the courage to watch it back yet. So it was fabulous. It was great. Thank you. How did it feel just to see your number hanging up there in the rafters? Yeah, I mean, I picked out 35 when I was in third grade, it was in between three. It was between three different numbers. And so it was in between a littler number and a bigger number. And I’ve had it since then, I mean, on and off since then. And to have it to, just to see it up there in the rafters with the other three amazing women’s basketball players, it was it was surreal and it was an awesome moment. That’s cool. Was there any reason why you chose 35? I mean, the you’re it was a decision between numbers, but was there any connection there, honestly, when I chose it, no, I just didn’t want to be the bigger number because, like, yeah, I’m not really like that. I wasn’t that big at the time. And then the little number, I was like, well, I’m not going to fit into that one. So it’s been the one that fit me. The best. Oh that’s incredible. You know, we talked to you back then and you know, right before the ceremony. But you know, getting to spend the time with your, your teammates. And it was just such a special team. How do you reflect upon, you know, that time and just the incredible teams that you were a part of back then here in Nebraska? Yeah, I just I don’t know, I mean, we were just really hard nosed, hard working kids. And I think, that was really great recruiting and it was just all the same mindset. We all bought in and yeah, we had some incredible years, and I think that’s just a testament to the coaching staff that could get us all on board. And then obviously the kids that showed up and wanted to put in that work every day and like I said, bought in to working every single day. And I think that’s just the way we carried ourselves day in and day out, was we were going to be the hardest working team. We might not be the biggest, we might not be the most athletic, but we are going to outwork you. And I think that kind of just carried over into all of our wins. We’re like, yeah, we’re going to win. We’re going to win, you know? And it was never easy like it was it was never, ever easy, especially in the big Ten, especially when we got into the tournament and everything. And it was never easy. But I think just having having that to fall back on, knowing that we are in shape, knowing that we run all the time, knowing that we know exactly what we’re doing. We rep. Rep. Rep Rep. Every single day. I think we just had that to fall back on and we just we trusted ourselves and we trust each other. And I think that’s what you have to play for, I love that. Well, the last time we chatted with you, she was on your heels chasing your double double record, yours and Kelsey’s, but she tied it at the end of the season. Alexis Murkowski you know, what was your perspective of watching her and really how she was able she she was really improved this year by how she was able to continue to dominate night in and night out over the course of last season. Yeah, yeah, I’m very impressed with her and I hope that she obviously she will. But I want her to continue to keep working. I want her to break that record, get it beyond go. You know, like I want that for, and it was awesome to finally get to meet her and just have a normal conversation. Not like, okay, please come to Nebraska. You know, how recruiting goes and all that stuff. But no, it was just a normal conversation. It was really good to get to meet her and then get to watch her play. And it was it was an awesome, awesome time watching Alexis do what Alexis does. And that was really fun. So I want her to keep pushing, take her team further, go, go further next year, get the records, do everything. Oh that’s cool. You know her? She’s a Nebraska kid. Allison Weiner’s coming off the injury. You just added Britt Prince Kennedy Williams, and you’re a Nebraska kid. What does that mean to you? To see just this young talent from Nebraska? Want to stay home and wear that in? Yeah. That’s awesome. Like it’s one thing to get recruited and that’s amazing. And it’s awesome to have all these schools and stuff. But when it comes down to it, when it comes down to your choice, it’s where do I feel more most comfortable? And the coaching staff and the teammates and just I mean, and they’re obviously I think most of them are from around the Lincoln Omaha area, correct? Yes. Yep. Yeah. Well Allison Weiner is from a tiny town, but kind of like like you. But yeah, Britt’s from Omaha and Alexis, right here in Lincoln, right? Yeah. So just being able to be home, I mean, a lot of people like, oh, I want to leave home. I want to leave home. Yeah, you do leave home. You go to college, you make new friends, you’re with, you’re in that group. And especially if you play a sport like you are away from home, regardless of where you go. And I just think it’s amazing that they chose to stay and stay home and bring this program to where we want it to be. You know, like that’s it’s really awesome to be a part of that. And it’s for them to be able to do that. I just think is really cool. So I hope that they I know they do. I take that with pride and continue on the legacy. What has it been like for you? You know, you got drafted, went to the WNBA, played professional, had to go overseas. What has it been like for you to watch how this it’s continued to grow and really how WNBA is huge right now. And the record breaking numbers and just the growth I guess of the professional league. Yeah it’s awesome. I think, obviously you always want to say Caitlin Clark has brought a lot to the league and stuff like that, which she has, but it’s not just her. Like there has been people throughout the years that have been bringing it along, bringing it along like and have been relentlessly working to get it to where it is now and yes, it does take a couple of big names to kind of take it over the top. So that’s what we’re seeing right now. We’re taking we’re taking it over the top. But there’s always been immense talent and it’s always been the best league in the world, for a reason. And I mean, it’s just awesome to finally see it get the recognition and like the I don’t know what you want to call it, but like, just the recognition that it that it has deserved for so long and get and get these names out there that people are like, oh yeah. And then I know there’s also, Athletes Unlimited that lets people stay at home more. And so I think people are tuning into that and they’re like, oh, there’s my favorite player. So they’ll tune in to that. And then they’ll follow them in the W and stuff like that. And I think that’s really, really important to have more exposure at home, because overseas is great, I loved it. I would not take away any of my nine seasons that I played overseas, but it’s also really hard time wise. And is there going to be a YouTube stream? Is there going to be any type of a stream? Like, does anybody get to watch you, or is it just kind of you on an island and a lot of places we’re just me on an island, and that’s totally fine as well. But if anybody wants to watch, it’s like, too bad. So sad. But no, it’s awesome to see it, to see it growing even more, exponentially more. So I love that your perspective too is I mean, you’re you’re pushing for Alexis and you want more for the next generation. You’re not one like, oh, I wish I had it. It just seems like you’re got a great perspective on no, I want it to be better for the next generation. Yeah. Well, I think that’s what people before me did. They wanted it to be better for me. And now I want to try to make it or try to help or try to promote it to be better for the next gen. I had my chance, you know, like I went to college, I did all my things, I went to the WNBA, I did my thing, I went overseas, I did my thing, and now I’m kind of like, okay, I’m done doing my thing. I want, I want these other kids to have the same opportunity and more because I understand, like sometimes it wasn’t the best. It was not the best at all. Like travel, just having that is a big thing in the W that now they’re finally getting chartered and I’m like, that’s really important because that sucked, and just like the brands and the deals and all of that, I mean, it’s so important to have that and continue. And again, it’s getting there. But if you and I never want to do I never like doing this. But if you look the flip side and the NBA and all of their stuff, it’s like, okay, well we’re not there yet. We’re still not there yet. And we will we’ll get there. They will get there because the women’s sports, like I said, like you said, it’s growing and it’s really important for, for little girls to see themselves on TV. And so that’s that’s huge. Yeah. I love that perspective. You continue to give back to the game and teach the young kids next generation. What are some of the things you try to implement when you’re trying to coach up the next generation and to become the next great basketball players in the state of Nebraska? Honestly, I’m doing a camp now, my shirt, my shirt says it for Heemstra Basketball Academy, but I am doing that. But it’s all basics. Like I’ve like when I’m watching, like high schools, especially around here. It’s really hard to watch. Not not trying to be rude, but it just is because there’s just not a lot of skills. And everybody, you know, everybody wants to shoot the three and everybody wants to do all this in-out crossover stuff, which is great. Again, that’s great if you can do it, but a lot of kids can’t at the level they need to. And so our camp or our academy is just taking it back to the basics. We’re just a literal fundamentals. And I don’t know, we’re just working on it a little bit of footwork because that’s important. We’re working on ball handling, passing, catching like all basics, basic stuff. And I think that if you can hone in on that stuff and become really good at that, then if you get or when you get to the next level, then they will work with you, even further. And then then that’s when you can start doing all of the fancy stuff. But I think for high school and below, it needs to be basics. It needs to be fundamentals, and kids need to get out, out, outside and play. That’s what I’ve noticed as well. Not not a lot of kids are playing anymore, which is kind of sad. But get outside, play one on one, two on two, three on three. Grab your friends. You know, go play basketball for a while. Oh that’s great. It’s great. Well, being that this is the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, what were some of your, I guess, favorite sporting events that you went to? Who are some of your favorite fellow Huskers that you got to watch and see compete. That’s tough, obviously I love football. Like I still I get goosebumps going to football games, and I don’t probably just because I grew up watching my brother play football. And so I’m just kind of more like football is like my thing, and then obviously volleyball, like, I knew Jordan Wilberger when because she’s from Scottsbluff. And so I went and got to see her a little bit, and I would always try to root for obviously the Nebraska kids, like, I just would, you know, if I didn’t know him personally, I would search out the rosters and see who was from Nebraska and obviously go root for them. Whatever team they were on, I’d be like, oh yeah, they’re from Nebraska. That’s pretty cool. And I don’t know, I just think that’s pretty awesome. But yeah, I went to a few baseball games, which is really fun, I went to I went to a gymnastics meet, which was really fun, and I don’t know if I, I didn’t go to I don’t think I made it to any tennis. I don’t know about anything else, but tried to make it to as much. Oh, I went to a swimming thing once as well. I don’t know, all the athletics are really fun to go to, but like I said, I always tried to seek out like Nebraska kids and just root a little extra hard for them. Be that you’re a football fan, you expecting a big year for Matt Rhule and company this season? I hope so, I think everybody’s hoping so. We always hope so, don’t we? Yes, yes, I hope so. I really, truly this has to be we have to get better. That’s all. Let’s I don’t care. You can win all of them. Lose all of them. But as long as we’re getting better each game, then that’s all that really matters. So I don’t know. I hope so, fingers crossed. Oh that’s awesome. You know, just I think I asked you some sort of this question. The last time we spoke. But you know, being from Alliance, Nebraska, and you come here and you’re a volleyball star and basketball star growing up and but just if they would have told you and you’re playing in the driveway when you’re a young girl that you’re going to have your jersey retired and then you’re going to be a Hall of Famer inducted into Nebraska Hall of Fame, what would you have said to that person that told you that? I don’t nobody would have told me that because nobody nobody thought I mean, and that’s that’s not true. People thought I was going to do whatever I was going to do. But, nobody would have told me that because I was just I was never one to talk about that stuff, you know, first of all. But if they had, I don’t know, I would have probably laughed at their face and continued to shoot or continue to do whatever I was doing at that time, so I wouldn’t have taken it seriously. It would have obviously been a goal which it became a goal later on, or at least an idea that would have been really cool. But I would have probably just laughed and kept doing what I was doing and been like, okay, cool, I’ll try to work for your goal for me, but it would have never even been in my stratosphere. As to either of these two things happening, especially not in the same year. That’s crazy for Nebraska to want to honor you and celebrate you in that way. And now these two different ways. And, what does that mean to you as alum, as someone that poured a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this program that they want to. Hey, thank you for what you’ve done and celebrate you and your career. Oh, yeah. It’s awesome. I’m so appreciative of the university, obviously for my four years, and I continue to be appreciative of the university for what they continually, not only for me, but for all of the alum and all of the athletes and all of everybody that ever goes through there. They just continually make you feel like you’re family in whatever way. It doesn’t have to be all these accolades. It doesn’t have to be any of that stuff. But any time you come back, they just want to be like, oh, hey, how are you? All that stuff? And I think that’s that’s what separates a university from anywhere else, because I mean, I know there are some places where people don’t want to go back. They don’t feel like that’s home. They don’t feel like they’re welcome. And that’s it is sad. But that’s where Nebraska, I think differs, which is really, really fun, really cool, great stuff. That’s a big drop in the conversation, that great stuff as always. Jordan, was so great to get to chat with you again. And hey, keep those honors coming. So we can keep chatting and having these conversations Yeah. Sounds good. I don’t know what’s next. So great. Hey, that’s Jordan Hooper, a part of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame. This year’s class of inductees. And they will be going into the Hall of Fame coming up this fall. Thanks again to Jordan Hooper for joining us. And congratulations to her and the rest of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class will be inducted. Coming up a ceremony this fall. Husker fans, check out the all new HyVee perks program. Acres solutions for every field. Greg Sharp, Jeremiah Sirles back with you. Thanks to Jessica for spending some time earlier today with Jordan Hooper. She brought up a point that I want to ask you, you know, about attending other sporting events while you were here as a student athlete. Obviously your lovely wife was a soccer player. That might have been hard because you guys, your seasons were at the same time, did you go to other sporting events when you were on campus? Yeah. You know, we went to quite a few volleyball games. You know, we were we were friends with Gina mancuso and Hannah Wirth, and obviously Taylor dated Lauren Cook for a while, you know. So we were close with the volleyball team. So we used to go because those used to be on like Monday nights or Thursday nights, and so we’d be able to go during the week and go to those, went to a few basketball games. Here and there. But, you know, yeah, you’re right. Me and Emma, I think, only got to watch like eight of her games because we always had practice on Sundays and meetings, and then she only got to watch like 3 or 4 come to 3 or 4 of mine. It was pretty crazy. It’s one of those things that I think maybe athletes don’t maybe appreciate it at the time. And then they get out of school and they go, why didn’t I go to more stuff? You know, what am I doing hanging in my dorm room and playing 90 or, you know, whatever you did, you go, man, I kind of wasted some opportunities. So it’s kind of fun to hear Jordan Hooper talk about all the different things she went to go do. So that was fantastic, you you brought up the Sunday practice and I think coaches seem to in college, particularly, they debate whether to give Sunday as a day off or go Sunday, give Monday off. Did you have a preference? Did you do both or did both do it the same way the entire time? We really never got a true day off until my senior year. Like a true like away from the facility day off. I love the Monday day off schedule because if you play in the NFL, obviously it was Tuesday, but I loved coming in right after a game, getting a lift in, getting a shake out in and then watching the game and putting it to bed. Right? Good, bad or ugly. Like watch the game, take the corrections, learn from it, move on. And then when you get the week day off, you’re not sitting around the whole time thinking like, oh my gosh, we have to watch tape or what did I do? Or this, that and the other thing, and it just gives you a more restful time period in my opinion. If you kind of put the game to bed and then start the new week fresh, that would make sense to me is, yeah, get get through Sunday because you’re probably probably have to do some kind of ice tub or something, right? That anyways, you got to come in and do some treatment in most cases. And CMAs will go ahead and do the film session and get that out of the way. Yeah, I mean, and in reality too, when you do that and you put the game to bed, you allow the player to move on and start early on his game planning, like I always used to come in, even my senior year, we had the day off and just start watching tape of the opponent. I didn’t know what the game plan was yet. I didn’t know what our run game plan or any of that was, but just start realizing, okay, are they a four down structure? Are they a three down structure? Do they have a stud rushing on the end? Right. Like what are some tensity or things that I need to look for? You know, it just allows you to move on quicker instead of if you don’t watch the game to that Monday, you’re not really getting ahead on game planning. You can buy yourself 24 hours of advantage if you put the game down the day right after. And you’re exactly right, you got to come in, hit a cold tub, get some type of treatment. I mean, you’re not just going to sit at home the day after a game. You’re way too sore. So cold tub was that pretty standard? Oh, every every Sunday. Every day I was I was a cold tub every day guy. I mean, I loved the cold tub. I loved the hot tub. I mean, I was a tub club guy. We had a tub club, right? And, I mean, you would hang out and do the contrast bath in the morning, and then nothing was better than, I mean, some of my favorite stories and some of my favorite memories from college or all of us big old linemen jumping in a in the cold tub like I was a hog trough and just hanging out and just telling stories and kind of reminiscing on all practice was tough. Or what about this play and laughing and having fun, like the camaraderie in the cold tub was just the best top notch. Isn’t that amazing that that is one of your favorite memories? For sure. It’s something kind of kind of something simple. Yeah, but it’s what? Because it’s the conversations that go involve with it. It’s the laughter about this or the prodding of a teammate about that. That’s the stuff that sticks with you for the rest of your life. Absolutely. And this wasn’t like the new cold tub they have over in this monstrosity. I’m looking at it next to me. I mean, this was the like, imagine like the hot tub in your neighbor’s backyard cold tub. And then imagine six, 300 plus pound men sitting and jockeying for sitting position as we’re elbowing each other. And yeah, I mean, that’s the stuff. Honestly, Greg, like when I look back at my career at Nebraska, even in the NFL, like, do I miss playing? Absolutely. But like, do I just miss hanging out with my best friends and getting to hang out and do life together and do really hard stuff and really cool stuff and play in front of hundreds of thousands of people and talk about that and carry those memories like, that’s the stuff I miss most. And I think most athletes would agree with that. When you leave your sport, like the sport, yes, it’s great, but it’s the people that you really miss. Yeah we’re position groups territorial, like when you guys had the tub, it’s like, no, this is the O line. Guys get 100. I mean the O line. Maybe we’re a different breed, but I mean like I remember a DB try and get in. We just start splashing them and they’d be like, it’s cold. Like, I’d better get out of here. We’d all just do like the hip gyration, make like a wave pool. Like, oh yeah, when we were in our time. Don’t bother us, right. We’re like mushrooms. Just put us in the dark and let us grow I love it, that is fantastic. Hey. What else? Auto family there. Your trusted auto partner, Tony Brands. 20 convenient sales and service locations. Sam and Omaha wanted to get what’s on the circle’s menu for a 4th of July holiday. I mean, my number one is brats and hot dogs. I mean, I’ll just eliminate those as the day goes on. And then I’m doing a big brisket smoke for having kind of a neighborhood get together. And so I’ll do this my third year doing it, doing about an 18 hour smoke. So I’ll get like a 17 pound brisket, put it on like 11:00 the night before, wake up, spritz it, keep it moist, keep it ready to go. You know, you give those things love and attention or they dry out on you. It’s terrible. So I’m excited about that because every year I make that, I pour my time and my heart and then it’s gone in like ten minutes. You’re like, yeah, enjoy it. Like, do people know what I did for this? Like give me some, give me some. There’s like, oh, super good. And then it’s just gone. It’s just gone. All right. What about the side dishes, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, deviled eggs, anything like that. I’m a macaroni salad guy. There you go. Love a good macaroni salad. Like it’s got to be cool. It’s got the little chunks of cheddar cheese in it. Right. The thing with the salads, though, you got to get them while they’re fresh out of the fridge, right. Those things sit outside for very long, and it’s supposed to be hot on 4th of July, like real hot. So you got to get to those things early, or else there’s the warm potato salad, warm macaroni salads. Never, never good for anything Well, it’s risky. I mean, you can get sick pretty quick off that kind of stuff. Oh, yeah, don’t do that. And then for sweets, I love a good, like, just a solid cupcake. Like just a good homemade cupcake. Not like I don’t want the big sheet cake like I want nice cupcake. You unwrap it, you break it, you make it like a sandwich and you smash it. Brownies, rice Krispie treats, scotcheroos, all that stuff. Love that I put out scotcheroos. Oh, aren’t those aren’t those the best? You’re getting me. You get me fired up. Crypto wants to know how do you dress your hot dog? You know, you got to go with the classic ketchup mustard and then a spicy relish. Get a spicy relish in there and change it up and you go with it. I’m not a big Chicago dog guy, you know, like throwing the onions and the pickles. Like, that’s not my thing. I like a solid hot dog with ketchup and mustard lined up equally on each side, and then a nice dash of relish down the middle. See, I get made fun of because I do. I do mustard and ketchup, and I get made fun of that all the time. But I think it’s kind of the combination. I don’t mind a little sauerkraut on my kraut. I’ll do that, and I love that. But four hours to Lincoln and our chat room says he loves hearing you talk about food. I mean, it’s like this could be a side gig for you. I mean, food. Listen, if being 310 pounds was easy, everyone would do it, right? I mean, it’s a, it’s a, it’s a challenge to be this big. I mean, and I wear that challenge with a lot of pride to say, you know, I’ve eaten everything. I will try just about anything. Now there’s two there’s two things I will not eat. Coconut and curry. I hate them, I just can’t I can’t do it. It’s okay. We all have to have lifts. We have to have things on the list that aren’t as good. Husker soccer gained a transfer today from a hometown name, Lucy McCabe is transferring from Maryville to Nebraska. McCabe adds experience and depth to the back field and graduated from Lincoln Pious High School and finally, the US men’s national team continued group play today against Panama. I don’t believe what I just saw. Tominaga knocks it home. Here are your hosts Greg Sharp and Jeremiah. Cyril’s on the Huskers radio network. He cracked Camden cracked under the pressure. Yeah you got him to crack. You know, you you got to just. Sometimes you got to put these young kids in pressure cookers, man. You got to see if they can perform when the lights are on and everybody’s watching, you know? And in this case, it was, can he catch a jug? Can he catch a little Sour Patch kid as we’re just lobbing Toby Tominaga three pointer line man John Baylor call. he talked about the US men’s national team that Copa America tournament. They played a man down. They got a red card in 17 minutes in. And so not surprised they ended up losing that to Panama 2 to 1. So yeah it’s an upset. But when you get to play a man down almost the entire match, it’s really hard to overcome. Overcome that. Go ahead. I was just about to say I mean, from the soccer that I have watched, the amount of running that those people do, and then you take away a part of the field like you probably you’re probably overloading someone, and that’s going to cause them to have issues throughout the rest of the tournament, too, because of just wearing out. Is there a stiffer penalty in any other sport like that? I mean, red cards and you’re out all of a sudden you’re it’s ten versus 11. I’m not sure there’s any other sport. I guess you can get ejected from a basketball game or a pitcher can be thrown out. I guess that would be big, but but you don’t lose them for the rest of the you don’t lose the position for the rest of the game. Right? It’s like it’s like when you get a ten minute misconduct penalty at the end of at the end of a hockey game, it’s like, yeah, you’re out. But it’s not like you can’t replace that player, right? I mean, I think this is by far I mean, you get a red card in the first half. You’re you’re pretty much toast. How about McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers being named the MVP even though they didn’t win the series? You good with that or you think that’s kind of that’s kind of the wrong way to go to the winning team ought to be rewarded. I mean, I think he was the best player in the series. I mean, to be fair, but the hard part is now people are coming down on him about not coming out and accepting the trophy. And not doing all this stuff. And I was like, dude, he just lost the most important game of his life, the most important series of his life up to this point. And then you want him to come out there and smile for the cameras and be like, thank you. Like, I think it’s fair to give it to the opposing team, but I don’t think it’s fair to ask them. Ask them to come out and act like everything’s okay. Yeah. Good point. You’re right. He was the best. He was the best player on the ice for the seven game series. But it’s pretty odd. You don’t see that happen very often, that the MVP goes to the guy from the losing team. I think the other piece of it is like, I mean, you could probably have given it to Bobrovsky in goal for them. But like other than that, there wasn’t like a runaway guy with it on Florida’s side. And I think that was the part that they were just like, no one really earned this. I mean, even Bobrovsky got pulled. What is that game for? Like when they let up for five goals in the first two periods? It’s like, can we give it to a guy that got yanked halfway through a game? Like, we can’t really do that. Like, so he was the best player. And so if that’s going to stay true to it, I respect that they can stay true to that and not just be like, well, we have to pick an MVP from the other team because they won. I don’t respect the fact that the Lakers today use one of their two draft picks on Bronny James. You know, this is a guy that couldn’t crack the USC starting lineup Jeremiah. And now he’s a second round pick. Are you kidding me? Come on. That’s a travesty. It’s a travesty. There’s so many players that have to be looking there that are going, are you kidding? Like you got drafted because of your name. Like and you probably got strong arm like LeBron. Probably strong armed. Listen I think LeBron’s a phenomenal player. I think he’s probably one of the best to ever do it if not the greatest. But it really just shows that he has the Lakers in a vice. Right. And he can just twist and turn and say, this is what I want. And they’re going to go, yes sir, Mr. LeBron, whatever you need. Like I hate that. It’s just not a it’s not fair to the rest of the players that compete at that level. That should have had a chance to get drafted in that spot. Yeah, just kind of silly. I think LeBron pressured the Lakers to do it now. Now watch LeBron sign with somebody else and leave. And the Lakers are going to go well. Well take him with you. We just drafted your kid. You can take it with you. We don’t actually want him like wherever you go just package deal it just package deal I mean all other thoughts aside, how cool is that? Like when you remove yourself from the politics and like, the ability to have a father and a son playing together on a professional team, like, I don’t know if that’s ever happened before. Right? Frank. Frank Gore. Frank Gore almost did it with his kid. But yeah, I mean baseball it’s happened a couple times. The Griffeys played together and there’s been some in baseball, but that’s just why it’d be so cool to be playing with your son. I mean, I don’t know, I think that at the highest possible level, I totally agree. What else? Auto family. They are your trusted auto partner. 20 brands, 20 convenient sales and service locations. Com want to get into something with you tonight that Jessica and I kind of covered last the final Learfield Cup standings came out yesterday and Nebraska for the first time in quite a while, finished in the top 2522. A lot of Husker teams finished nationally ranked, in fact, you could feel really good about this athletic department right now. The soccer team won a conference championship in the fall. Volleyball won the conference championship. Baseball won the postseason tournament. Wrestling finished in the top five. You can kind of go on and on and on. Both basketball teams made the NCAA tournament. The glaring exception is football, and we talked about this last night. Jeremiah, I want your take that football has to relearn how to win. And to me that might be the biggest challenge for Matt Rhule is to flip the switch and the guys heads that we’re going to make a play now late in a game that allows us to win instead of waiting for something that keeps us from winning the football game. Your thoughts about trying to teach this program now how to win again? Like like you had it when you were playing. Yeah. You know, it goes back to something that Mike Zimmer actually instilled in us when I was with the Vikings in 2015. You know, his mantra when we showed up for training camp was men. First you have to learn how to practice. Then you have to learn how to win. Then you have to learn how to handle winning. And then you can become a champion. Right. And that really set with me, because the way you play the game is the way that you practice throughout the week. And I think Matt Rhule has done a very good job with the few practices I’ve got to go see of having winning practices. And so these this team has learned how to practice and learned how to win on certain occasions based off what we saw last year. But when it comes down to crunch time in the fourth quarter, you have to have guys that have been there before that can quiet the storm and rally the troops in the right way, and the way that you said it, right where you’re out there not playing to lose the game, but playing to go win the game. And I think at times this, this program in the last decade really has so many times gotten into the fourth quarter. And it’s been close where the mindset can creep in of, oh my gosh, here we go again. Like this. Can’t actually happen again, can it? And then one thing can snowball and can pile on top of another versus man, I can remember. I mean, Greg, I think it was the 2011 or 2012 season where we had like six comebacks. Right? And there was just there was never a panic because we had been there and done it before. And unfortunately, the only way to do that is by winning games late in the fourth quarter and having that feeling and having that high and chasing that high repeatedly of being like, man, that was so much fun. Let’s keep doing that. Versus the flip side, when you lose those games in the fourth quarter, the low is so low that it’s sometimes hard to break out of. And, you know, Rhule’s talked about the owning the fourth quarter and being able to win in the fourth quarter, and you can tell it’s a big precedent for that. He wants to set for this football team. And, you know, I think that as long as he can stay on message and if we can get off to some momentum early in the year and string one, two, three games together and win those games, that’s going to set us up for the success in October. And November when we’re heading into the teeth of conference. Pray play. I was I’m kind of a cockeyed optimist. I thought maybe we had turned that corner exiting October last year, and then November came with a four straight close losses that prevented us from getting to a bowl game. And so you kind of felt like, okay, we’re right on the cusp. And then, oh, it got pulled back. And you bring up a great point. And it’s one that we’ve not done ourselves favors. And I’m throwing the administrations that have overseen Husker football over the last decade into this two, because we haven’t opened at home. We have put ourselves in tough spots. We accept the game in Ireland. With northwestern last year back to back roadies to start. Are you kidding me? What an unfair way to start the Matt Rhule era. Well, this year it’s four straight at home and it may be. Maybe that’s what we need. We just need that home cooking to build the confidence to come through that four game stretch, win some games and feel like, okay, now we have a program that’s ready to jump forward. So, you know, hopefully it all comes together. But you’re right on the schedule. That is huge. To have the four straight at home to begin the year. And it’s not just four straight noon kickoffs at home, right. It’s a mixture of it is right. Right. You got the mixture of the regular 230 and then you’ve got the night game with Colorado. Right. So you get these these young players acclimated to a at home safe environment of what the process for a night game is and how you prepare for a night game and War Memorial Stadium, and how you get to the stadium and go through your pregame warm up and change your body clock, like doing that on at home is so much different than doing it on the road. For a first time. For a player that’s going to be a first time starter, right? That’s a really, really weird adjustment. It’s not something many people think about, but just the comfortability of being in your locker room, knowing where your stuff is, not wondering where am I going for pregame warmup, how am I getting there? What time is the bus leave? Like all that stuff plays a factor and so you get multiple of those. Again, you’re setting the table for October and November with those September early home games, which I love. I mean, my senior, I think we started out with 5 or 6 home games in a row, and it was phenomenal. I love what you said about Matt. Rules kind of builds winning aspects into the practices, because I think that’s important to kind of put something on the line in practice and make somebody win something. And with a lot of drills, with a lot of some of the things that they do, they even do that a lot in the off season with kind of their Olympic Games. They do in February before spring ball begins. I think that’s a building process that this program has desperately needed because there is there’s a fine line in winning in college football now. It’s way different than the 80s and 90s, which people pine for where Nebraska was so far ahead of everybody else. They could play their C minus game and win by two touchdowns. You don’t have that anymore. It’s so close together now between the Purdue’s, the Northwestern’s, the Nebraska’s and even on up the chain where people can get beat by some of those other teams. So you have to you have to take care of the fine details to win football games. And I’m hopeful we’re on that track. Yeah And I love the piece that Matt does is two of the different ways of teaching guys to compete, right. When you’re competing on a football field, it’s one thing, but then competing with a group atmosphere in the weight room is another way of competing. Right? And then competing on a one on one individual with someone in your room, whether it’s a tug of war or a skills challenge or whatever it is, it’s just building different ways to compete because everyone’s brain is a competitor, ticks differently, right? And some things hit players brains differently. But getting to the crux of what what is this guy is what is this guy and how does he react when I put him in a hyper competitive situation? You’ll see the true colors of some people, right? Some people turn tail and run other people you wouldn’t expect step up and just take charge and roll. And that’s a huge piece of the evaluating process of, hey, when it is fourth quarter and it’s crunch time and we need this, who can I rely on to put out there and say, I know who this guy is, because I’ve seen him at his raw competitiveness throughout the off season. I know that he’s not going to flinch when the moment comes. Right. And that’s just a piece that coaches do all the time that players don’t even realize, but they’re constantly just trying to see, how can I get the best out of you and see who you really are? It’s interesting. I love the way the schedule sets up. Let’s hope it works out that way for the Cornhuskers. August 31st. Going to be here before. Before you know it. Cole is going to come on later on in the hour and tell us about what games we’re going to hear next week in our best of week. As we go dark on the network for the 4th of July week back with another live show on July the 8th. Well, we’re gonna talk some offensive line. This segment, one guy that I’m excited about his future this coaching staff really likes is Justin Evans can play center, can play guard. Pretty versatile guy. Jessica recently had a chance to sit down with Justin right here with Justin Evans. Well, how does it feel to have this uniform back on and be going through this media day in the big screen shoot and all of that? Yeah, it feels good. I wish that, you know, we could be getting ready to play a game right now. You know? But it feels awesome just getting back into the flow of things and putting the uniform back on. How’s the summer going for specifically the offensive line? The summer has been going great. You know, we’re all just putting in work, getting better each and every day. What were the goals going into this summer for you guys and what you wanted to improve on before fall camp? Yeah, the goals for this summer is to just build a tighter unit, you know, just to get stronger together, get faster together in preparation for fall camp in the season. Can this O-line unit be any tighter? You guys are pretty tight unit. Yeah. We you know, I feel like we can always get closer with each other, you know, we’re focusing on building our relationship off the field. So we can show on the field how close we are. You obviously proved how versatile you were. You were last year. You started at center, played at guard. When you close the chapter on last season, how did you feel about your growth throughout the entire season? Yeah, I felt like, you know, just as a person and as a player, I grew a lot because I had to, you know, go in on short notice. But, you know, that just shows that, my preparation and that I was ready for the moment. So going into next year, I feel super confident. What did that mean to you, that they relied on you in those moments to be able to fill those roles? Yeah, it was it was big, you know, because you never know when your name is going to get called. So you have to be ready at all times. But I feel like the coaches believed in me, which made me believe in myself even more. What made you ready to play both positions? Center and guard? Yeah, so I’ve just been working on both in practice. You know, just being versatile, playing left guard center and a little bit of right guard. So wherever I need to go in and help, that’s where I’ll go in. How important is that for this offensive line unit? For an offensive lineman to be able to be versatile like that? Yeah, it’s important, especially for me. You know, being a shorter guy, I feel like I have to know every position because you never know when I might have to go out. Right? I might have to go at center. So what do you like about playing the center position? I feel like center. You’re in control of the offense. You know, everybody relies on you, so you kind of take on that leadership role. Ben was just bragging on how good of a job you did at center and backing him up. What’s it like playing with him, and how good has he been for you and working with him? Yeah, Ben has been a big help. You know, every time I have a question about something, I go to him. You know, being that he is the starting center. So I just look for him, like, look at him as a big brother to help me. What is it that you feel like you bring? You talk about being involved in every part of the offense that what do you think about your game that allows you to be good at that center position? Yeah, well, with the help of, you know, all the other older guys, I feel like just following them, like seeing how they do things is a big help. You know, as a young player, you need those kind of guys to look after and to so they can guide you throughout the season. You guys now have gone through two full seasons with Donovan Raiola, you guys just seem to love him so much and run through a brick wall for him. Why is that with him? Why is he such a guy? That is one that you guys want to play for. Yeah, you know, Coach Donnie is all about us. You know, he’s for us. He’s willing to do anything to help us get better. So that’s why we have so much respect for him. You know, you talk about the close knit of this group and continuing to grow that. What does that do when you get on to the football field? How does that translate. Yeah, it I mean it translates because you see how we do everything together, you know, because as an offensive line we have to play together. So doing things together off the field just brings us closer to have that tight knit. You know, with so many guys that have played a lot of ball yourself included, what kind of goals motivation do you guys have with so much experience? How good is that? I guess for a football team, for an offensive line, that you have so many guys that have played together and played so much, so many snaps? Yeah, I feel like those guys who have played a lot of snaps, who have been here, you know, 4 or 5 years, they can they can teach the younger guys because when it’s their time to leave, we have the coaches set already. So we know the standards and everything like that. How do you feel like some of those younger guys are coming along, coming along great. You know, they’re attacking the weight room each and every day. So yeah. What’s it like for you guys going up against the defensive line. You guys seem to have some battles. Yeah, it’s just iron and sharpening iron every day. You know? They’re making us better. We’re making them better. What’s up for the offense? And what you guys established last year? How much do you feel like you can take another step with some of the pieces that were brought in, but just establishing what you did last year and taking another step this year? Yeah, you know, even with the new additions of the people that we have on the team, you know, we have a certain culture, how we run things. And I feel like everybody’s been doing a great job just adapting to the culture, whether you’re a freshman or you’re an incoming. It’s just it’s like a big family. So it just flows naturally for you. Just being what you did last year, how do you approach this year knowing that you know, you’re thrown to the fire a little bit and didn’t know what you were going to do last year, but knowing your role this year, how does that change your approach? What does that do for you? I guess in terms of goals going into the season? Yeah, I mean, I just feel like now I have to work even harder. You know, being, you know, thrown in there like you said and just being able to adapt. I feel like going into this season, you know, I have a better understanding and like knowing where I’m at on the offensive line. And I know, like going into this season, that I’ll be ready for whatever comes. All right. And then just what goes into these next few weeks for this offensive line to be ready to go come fall camp? Yeah, we’re ready to go. I feel like we’ve been working really hard in the weight room, you know, doing our drills, doing our lifting, you know, just studying together. Everything we do is together. I feel like I keep saying that, but like, it really is like a family, you know, we’re making each other better. Awesome. Appreciate your time. Great stuff. There’s Justin Evans with Jessica, a guy that you know, I know this staff feels like will be kind of one of their top eight players. He talked about learning from Ben Scott. Give me give me your kind of your grade card on Ben Scott Jeremiah as a player and what kind of role and how many snaps you think you try to give a guy like Justin Evans this fall. Yeah. You know he’s a guy that came in here last year and man, coming in as a center and taking over an O-line room from a different school is really tough because the center is the quarterback of that offensive line. And so everyone’s looking to you. Everyone’s looking to you to get everyone lined up. Make sure we’re in the right call, make sure everyone knows the snap count. And you know that’s something that’s just developed over time and trust. And you talk about a guy that got here in January and then ended up starting for us in August. It’s not a lot of time to build that trust. And so I’m excited to see what he can do in year two in the Raiola system. And Satterfield system, you know, and see if he can really take that jump and really just how much the guys can follow him. And I mean he had banged up last year I know he played with a with a knee injury majority of the time, but that’s just why it’s so important to get guys like Justin and meaningful reps during training camp, because you have to prepare like someone’s going to get hurt. You never want to think it. You never want to put it out there and be like, oh, well, if you get hurt, but that’s just the nature of playing this violent sport is eventually something’s going to happen and guys have to be ready to go. So it’s important that he’s going to get a lot of reps. I think he’s he’s going to be in the mix to compete for a starting guard spot to no doubt, what number of guys would Donovan Raiola walk out of camp and go? I’m comfortable with that number. Is it eight that can play nine? I mean, obviously you’d want 12 or whatever, but yeah, realistically that’s not going to be the case. Is it eight. You felt like you had eight going in. You’re good. You want to have eight. You want to have your starting five. You want to have a true swing tackle that you feel really good about that could go play left or play right. You know, if one of your starting guys goes down or you have a guy that you feel like can swing, right? So and I don’t think we have that guy right now that’s a starter, right? If Teddy were to get hurt, you could bump Benhart to left. And what that. But I think Benhart is pretty. Said it. Right. So you want to have true swing guy. You have a backup interior swing guy, and then you want to have a true backup center, right? So if you can go in with those eight guys you’ll be feeling really good about this. You know, the problem is, right now, I’m not sure we have eight that I can name off the top of my head, specifically at the tackle position is where we’re not a swing guy. You not put Turner in that category. We could, but I think we’ve seen that movie. And I think we know that where we want him to be. You know, I think we want to upgrade in that backup position there. And I think that he’s better suited for interior guard. I think our guard depth is actually really good. You know, you talk about Henley Lyutovsky, you have Micah Mizuka that came over from Florida. You’ve got Turner in there, you’ve got Ben Scott, right? You’ve got you’ve got bodies in there that are going to be able to compete. But you start talking about two deep at the tackle position. That’s where it starts getting pretty thin. Yeah. Defensive line these guys get to go battle them. You know I’m amazed because I think back 12 months ago and everybody’s like, oh is this three, three five at Tony White going to work in the big Ten with the Big Ten shred that kind of a defense. And then lo and behold they became one of the better units in the conference. With the way they did that. Your thoughts about the three three, five, now that you’ve seen it a year here and then in particular what you saw from the defensive front last year for Nebraska? Yeah. You know, I like you. I never had a really any experience with the three, three, five at any level playing against it. Having a coach on staff like it’s just not really a very it’s not in the NFL at all. And it’s just kind of getting newer to college football, but it makes a lot more sense when you break it down schematically of yes, it’s three, three, five as a base, but we have a lot of four down structures as well, and I felt a lot better that when I started watching it and understanding how they put those rotational guys in there. But you talk about how to have a success. Is that three, three, five? You have to have a dominant nose guard, right? Everything starts at the point of attack at the nose guard with this position, you have to have a guy that can eat up double teams, not allow those guards to free climb on the linebackers. Interiorly and do all that. And so it really starts with Nash. Big zero there right in the middle. Right. And then you pair him next to a guy like Ty Wright who’s another wrecking ball. And then Van Poppel’s a guy I’m really looking at for this year. But you know, Terrance Knighton has done a great job with those young guys and getting them ready to go. And then you start saying, okay, what kind of jump does cam Lenhardt take this year? And you know, Jamari Butler was a rush three technique at one point last year. Like there’s so many different moving parts. And I love that about the 335. It keeps the offenses on their toes. And it also made our DBS have to step up and tackle, which I was pleasantly surprised with last year. Yeah. And that that part of it worries me more going into this year than than last year because there’s not as much experience on that back end of this thing. Elijah Judy is another name I would throw in there for that defensive front. But physically we look like we belong pretty much every week up front because of those guys you mentioned in Nash and Ty, even when we even when we played the big boys, now, I know we didn’t match up much with Michigan. They were a steamroller. They were the national champions, I get that. But outside of that game, you felt like Nebraska physically matched up pretty well with what they had up front defensively. Yeah, I agree with that. And you know what? I’m more excited for this year is when we have younger players that are taking steps now, we can take some of the load off of Nash and Ty and those guys that played a ton of snaps. Instead of saying, hey, we need your best for 60 snaps this game, we can say, hey, we really need your best for 40 snaps this game. And then when it’s really crunch time on the other side of the ball, we talk about offensively. Now it’s crunch time on the other side of the ball. Defensively now you’re more fresh than you were because we didn’t have to play you so many times because we had lack of depth, right. And I think that’s a big piece that’s going to come into play. This year is more younger guys getting more snaps, meaningful snaps, which allows for our studs to rotate in a little bit more and be a little bit more disruptive. Jeremiah, I think one of the biggest wins of the off season was keeping Tony White and hey, I want him to be a head coach. I know he’s going to be a head coach. It’s written all over him, but I think getting a second year out of the same DC pretty big for our program. Massive. I mean, we were terrified. I remember after the year, all of us were texting our group like, dude, he’s gone. Like he’s he’s toast. Someone’s going to go pay him. Someone’s going to get him. I mean, and rightfully so. What he did was nothing short of miraculous, of how he turned this defense around in one short year. But yeah, I mean, you talk about development of a program development with recruiting and momentum. That’s really hard to do when after one year with mild success, you’re starting the board clean on the defensive side, like so. That was a massive win by rule and company to keep him. And I respect Tony White a lot for staying here with Matt and helping him build something that he started. Yeah, I thought San Diego State was going to snap him up. Glad they didn’t. Everybody’s going to be really excited about that. I got to imagine. Locked in. Move, move, move into that there. You know, I had a great thought that I was going to get into you. And I’m having a senior moment because I can’t remember what was going to be so now now I’m in a total loss. Oh, you just got you just start thinking about the debate too much and you just got the popcorn popping. You got the candy set up. You’re just ready to roll. I got it, it came back to me. Last weekend was a big recruiting weekend. A lot of young guys were in town. It’s interesting how many young guys like to fish. Well, they took a couple of them out to Coach Osborne’s house. He’s got a pond in the back of his house. And I saw a great picture on Twitter of Coach helping this young guy bait his hook. I thought that was really cool. And that’s pretty that’s pretty neat that Tom is like, you know , welcoming him to recruit, to come out and let him let him try to catch something in the old pond. That was awesome. Yeah That’s that’s super cool. Yeah. I mean, it’s definitely I mean, people ask like, well, what do you do in Nebraska? It’s like, well, do you like to fish and hunt and be outside? Because there’s lots of that. Right? And just experience that and getting to go out and go. And then I mean, the fact that the fact that Tio stood out there bait and hooks is incredible. I mean, I mean, that guy was old when I was getting recruited here, and he’s still out there just getting after it. And I saw him at Hy-Vee. Gosh, I probably saw him like six months ago. And I mean, he saw me in Jeremiah. How are you? How’s Emma doing? I was like, you’re still sharp as a whip man. Like your brain is still all there. He’s like 88. Yeah, I think he’s 80, 87 or 88 years old. You know, I’m going through my little deal. He called me a couple weeks ago to check on me, and I’m. It’s just I tell people that one of the greatest things about this job was the chance to get to know him pretty well. He was the ad when I came up here in 2008, and he’s the real deal. And you see why a guy like that was so successful? Because he can still connect. You didn’t play for him. You were playing when he was the ad, but you didn’t play for him. And there he knows you and your wife. That’s just amazing. Yeah. I mean, I remember in recruiting my mom, my dad and I sat down on my official visit and my dad and I were kind of awestruck. We’re like, Holy crap, that’s that’s Tom Osborne, right? Yeah. And we left that meeting. And I remember my mom looked at me and goes, wait, so who was that? And I was like, mom, it’s like the goat of college football right there. Like, you got to know who that is. She’s like, he was just such a nice old man. I was like, mom, mom, you got it. You got to know these things. Mom. Hey, what else? Auto families. You’re. I’m glad I remembered. That is your trusted auto partner with 20 brands, 20 convenient sales and service locations. Studio will be dark next week, but will be providing programing tomorrow night and next week. Cole Hartman has been working on best OFS. What’s the agenda? Let’s start with tomorrow. What do we have tomorrow night? Sure. So. Well, Cole Hartman and our great intern, Camden Camden Cohn, he’s been he’s been working just as hard as I on preparing these for our listeners. Tomorrow night, we’re going to throw a bit of a coach’s show compilation together, including Fred Hoiberg, Amy Williams, John Cook and more and kind of recent interviews with them. Summer updates from from all those sports, next week we’re going to run basically. Yes, some great games from either this past year or in years past, Monday night will be the men’s basketball knock off, knocking off number one Purdue from earlier this year. That’s a big one. Tuesday we’ll rerun, the match versus Omaha in Volleyball day in Nebraska. Wednesday will be and girls will like this football versus Ohio State in 2011. The great comeback Rex Burkhead the best Rex Burkhead and many more. Thursday will be Softball’s Big Ten Championship win in 2021. And Friday will have baseball’s Big Ten championship just a few months back. Sweet. Oh, what a week. That’ll be great. So that’s what folks, you can look forward to hearing next week. Instead of us chattering away. But we’ll be back on July the 8th. That’ll be a lot of fun. That Ohio State game was unbelievable. The comeback, the energy in the stadium. Lavonte ripped Braxton Miller. Then Rex took over the game in the fourth quarter. With the help of you and your offensive linemates. That was that. It’s got to be one of your top five games in Nebraska, I would think. Yeah, for sure. I mean, mostly because we were coming off the teeth kick in of Wisconsin the week before. Yeah. And then we were down big at halftime. I can remember running into the tunnel with boos, right? I mean pure like boos. You guys suck. And it’s just like Holy cow. What is happening? We got we can’t skid like this. Coming to the Big Ten two games in a row. And then just the momentum switch and that feeling of winning that game and saying like, we’re here to play with the big dogs. You know, that really kind of set the tempo for us the rest of that year. Yeah. Fantastic. Can’t wait to listen to all those coming up over the next 5 or 6 days. So that’s what you got. Looking forward for you folks next week. All right. We’re changing the order up a little bit tonight. We’ve mentioned it a couple of times that tonight is Kohl’s last night with us as our main producer. He is moving on. And so we’re going to jump the joke to this segment. This is something we started. It was almost a year ago right Cole. We began this and it was probably a year ago almost to the week. It was yeah early July or late June. Yeah. And I was I pushed back a little bit. I wasn’t a big fan early, but you convinced me because you performed week after week after week. So tonight, sadly, it’s your last joke of the week. Well, let me say that this joke, you may have heard it, but I know I haven’t said it on air. So the joke goes like this. And I’ll kind of talk to Searls and do it. Hope he indulges. I’m with you. A moth walks into a podiatrist office and he he says to the podiatrist, you know, hey, doc, I’m just not feeling too good. I’m having a hard go of it. I lost my job last week. My marriage is shaky. And, you know, this moth is really going through it. Just having a hard, hard, hard go of it in life. And the podiatrist asks, well, says, well that’s terrible moth. You know, that’s really terrible, but you should be seeing a psychiatrist. Why did you come to me? And the moth says, because the light was on And Greg, I wanted to tell that joke. I don’t know if you laugh this time around, but I told that to you. And Jessica about a year ago. Yeah. And. And that was kind of the springboard of. Hey, maybe, possibly we should bring you on air to tell these and so that’s my favorite joke of all time from the late Norm MacDonald. And that’s my last joke because the light was on, that’s a solid nine for me, right? Close to that ten. That’s a solid nine, I love it I give it a good 8.8. I’ll give you an 8.8. I appreciate it. That has been so fun. Now, I don’t know if we’re going to continue this or not. Duke took a week when you were gone and did a joke and did a pretty good job. We’re getting Duke back from his summer hiatus in a couple of weeks. I don’t know if Camden has the joke, my joke vein in his body or not, but, you have done a fun. We’ve turned this into kind of a fun little Thursday night segment. I know our audience loves it. The guys in the chat room go crazy. People text in their grades for you every week, so you’ve been a good sport about it. As well, Cole. So thank you for supplying us a little entertainment every Thursday night. I appreciate it. It’s been it’s been fun. Very, very good. Hey folks, a problem. Gambling is burning up your money. There is a way out. Help is free and confidential for Nebraskans and their families. But aren’t cigarettes at all. These are the things we know impair us. The things our parents warned us about.
