Rickie Fowler looked back on the “pure relief” of winning the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The face of the tournament since its inception, Fowler is hungry to get a trophy back in his hands. Oh, and he is rooting hard for the Lions again.
how’s the game feeling coming into this one rock and mortgage classic where you at right now mentally yeah in a good spot um some good stuff last week putted nicely so um feel like when I’m putting well that’s at least something that kind of frees up the rest of the game and coming back to a place where we’ve obviously had success in being defending Champions nice so yeah finally starting to kind of build some momentum it’s been a bit of a slow year and you know haven’t played really that well since last year here so time to kind of reignite some stuff and get back to where we were I know you’re so focused and Laser focused on what is to come but if you could just indulge us here and indulge Detroit just to take us back to that moment dropping that putter against your legs after you made that putt what was that feeling cuz I know in the moment it may have been tough to describe how much have you reflected on how good that felt yeah I mean it was just I mean yeah pure relief um and a lot of times when you gone through tough times whether it’s golf or other things and you kind of finally you know fight your way back and grind and get back into a position we play well and ultimately win and kind of accomplish one of the goals that we had um not that you sit back and relax but I think there’s there has been some of that and it’s probably been a reflection of of not playing as well just because of you know everything we went through to get back into that position uh like I said huge relief um but yeah there was we’re done relaxing that’s for sure um yeah struggled like I said it’s been a little slow since then but um yeah I feel like we’re finally kind of getting things going now to be at a place where you’ve had success and of course you’ve been the face of this thing but like you said stepping in here as the defending Champion is a different vibe can you reignite your game at a place where you’ve had success and just won a year ago yeah yeah definitely um like I said coming off last week with uh kind of some steps in the right direction and putted really well um can’t I don’t know if I I led the field or was number two or something yeah I was I was up there so that was that’s a good sign um and like I was saying I feel like kind of going with putting well it can it can free up and take a lot of stress off the rest of the game um and then all of a sudden that stuff starts getting better and start playing better and playing well Aiden Hutchinson was Jack the Mei yesterday what was it like playing with that big guy uh I wouldn’t want to have to try and Tackle him uh that’s for sure uh we had a great time um you know I’ve followed you know one the Lions a bit being close with Jared Goff and knowing him but um so i’ you know know a bit about him um it was fun to be out here definitely probably outside of his you know comfort zone I know he plays a little bit of golf but um not usually in front of people so just hope you had a good time I know we wanted to hit some better shots he made hit one close for us we we took his shot there he made a couple putts for us so he he held his own and just hopefully had a good time and um yeah I’m definitely pulling for the Lions this year
