RORY MCILROY, PATRICK CANTLAY TIED FOR U.S. OPEN LEAD

On the first day of the U.S. Open, Patrick Cantlay initially led with an impressive 65, but Rory McIlroy stole the show by finishing a bogey-free round with a spectacular 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, tying for the lead. McIlroy stood out for his discipline and control, hitting 15 out of 18 greens and easily recovering from the few misses. With notable performances from Ludvig Åberg, Matthieu Pavon, and Bryson DeChambeau, the competition started intensely. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one player, finished 1-over-par, facing challenges on the demanding Pinehurst No. 2 course.

[Music] well friends what a day we had at the US Open Patrick K Lake kicked things off with a stellar first round 65 grabbing the early lead but the real showstopper came when Rory mroy drained a 20ft birdie putt on the 18th hole wrapping up a Flawless round at Pinehurst number two and tying for the lead I thought I left it short mroy chuckled that’s why I walked after it it was an unintended but perfect end to a disciplined and confident round of golf Rory didn’t overpower the course or sink every putt he faced but his control was impeccable hitting 15 out of 18 greens and easily getting up and down for par on the other three Rory’s chip in for Birdie on the par five fifth hole really set the tone he kept his cool through four straight pars on the front nine and five on the back before nailing a birdie on the par 516th and that spectacular putt on 18 I could have got a little impatient mroy admitted reflecting on his day but my patience paid off with those birdies on two of the last three holes it felt great to finish like that we all know Rory’s story over a decade since his last major win countless close calls and heartaches at St Andrews and other iconic venues he’s tried everything to break the drought despite the lack of major winds Rory’s determination to reclaim his spot at the top remains unwavering I’ve had success with the mindset I brought in especially last year at LACC mroy shared even though the course is a bit different my strategy and mindset remain the same hitting it to the middle of greens and giving myself chances taking my medicine when needed Rory’s best shots at ending his major drought have been at the US Open with top 10 finishes in the past 5 years and a close second place last year he’s credited a more disciplined approach since 2019 and a newfound appreciation for the courses the USGA selects I’ve started to appreciate Golf Course architecture more mroy said becoming more of a student of the game has made me embrace courses and setups like this now with a bogey free round to start Rory is in a unique but promising spot historically he’s won every major he started without a bogey can he stay on top over the next 3 days in 54 holes the majors I’ve won or played well in I’ve always had a good start mroy noted it’s great to start another one this way Patrick Klay on the other hand is experiencing his first major lead after round one at 32 his putter was on fire needing just 23 putts despite hitting only nine Fairways and 10 greens and let’s not forget those hot on their heels Sweden’s ludvig oberg who shot four under in his US Open debut hitting every Fairway and just missing two greens super happy with the way we hit it very encouraging oberg said Frenchman Matthew pavon and Bryson Des Shambo with his top 10 finishes in the majors this year are tied at three under Tony fow Terell Hatton and rookie AE haa all looking for their first major win sit at two under Scotty Sheffer the world’s top ranked player has some catching up to do after finishing 1 over 71 only 15 players shot under par rounds on Thursday underscoring Pinehurst number two’s challenging layout the same number who finished under par after the first round back in 2014 well folks if you enjoyed this recap don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and leave a like stay tuned for more updates and exciting moments from the US Open thanks for watching and catch you in the next news upd date
