freaking first cut golly ladies and gentlemen boys and girls welcome to the first cut podcast this is your 2024 rocket mortgage classic preview this episode of The First Cut is presented by fan dual sports book make every moment more like the M on one Mark imman’s hat Markie Mark what’s going on on this fine Tuesday what’s up youell lra very very very nice and spoke with great Authority I’m impressed good to be with you thank you I appreciate that I practiced probably half an hour in the mirror before this so I appreciate your voice of confidence also joined by Kyle Porter the Tak Smith KP what’s popping yeah I know I know you didn’t practice for half an hour but thanks for thanks for uh presenting it like that yeah I’m doing great got some golf in this morning um ready to talk some golf this afternoon so uh it’s been a good day how’s the game trending uh the game the game is uh I’m hitting it pretty good I’m not scoring still but I it’s getting better I’m playing a lot which it feels good my my kids are old enough now that we can go play a short course I can work on my short game but still hang out with them I’m I’m I I’m I I have the bug like I I want to go play like 36 a day I’m I’m all in nice love to hear that last but not least of course we have Greg duch Greg how are you doing well uh not as good as Kyle because I am not playing very much but hopefully in the coming weeks that changes a little bit I have the golf bug too I did play on Saturday I did get fit for a new driver uh yesterday which was awesome uh so I can’t wait to play I’m really fired up about it it’s not gonna happen today it’s not gonna happen tomorrow it’s not gonna happen Thursday or Friday maybe next week uh that’s my hope and it’s a stretch but uh if I can get two rounds in over the next two weeks I will be well one if I can get one in over the next two weeks I’ll be thrilled but I’m hoping for two what uh what are your numbies like with the big stick so um bear wi okay which which numbies here are you talking about like as many swing speed ball speed I thought you me I thought you meant like uh shaft and we could get into that too a little over my head though so uh I’m like a 113 Club head speed 170 ball speed who big dog uh right in that neighborhood yeah it I have plenty of speed I hit it far but I have I I have been over the past couple of years a little spooked with the driver quite frankly um and every once in a while I hit a really quick hook now the funny thing is every other club in my bag like if I’m inside 270 I feel confident as could be my 3-wood is dialed uh long irons wedges everything is feels I’m so confident with I mean I don’t play a lot so it’s not sharp I’m not going to challenge Scotty shuffler by any means or anybody playing this week but I’m confident with the driver I’m like a you know I’m spooked like I said I’m thinking I’m driving home on on Sunday because I was up in Rhode Island for a wedding got him going Patrick I know got me fired up and and I’m thinking I I’m gonna have to get new sunglasses and turn into Henrik Stenson because I I I can’t play This Way spooked with the driver but I went for this fitting and they changed a they got a put a little lighter weight in the head and all of a sudden I’m fading it like I should be I can swing normal and it and it goes normal like really good so I’m really excited to play with the freedom to be able to swing at the driver and utilize some of my you know speed and power my assets you know gain some Strokes off the tea I’m fired up about it Patrick for what it’s worth I played golf last Friday with my boss and I’m spooked with every part of my game I mean I couldn’t hit it 250 and if I did it was not in the Fairway I don’t think I struck an iron solid the entire day I got to the green it was disastrous so um uh I can sympathize with spooked I think I might retire well I heard uh on the broadcast over the weekend Colt noos took a little money off you you know what there various folks that you would never want to lose to probably top of the list he’s if he isn’t at the top he’s very near to the top say yes yeah chatter box on him what uh what game are you guys playing out there it was 202020 and um uh fast to say I won’t name my partner I don’t want to incriminate him um but we were narrows it down a little I like five and through eight and then we made it a bit of a game on the second nine I hit a few better shots but it was it was just a forgettable day although the golf course was fantastic what do Colt play off of right now like a plus something or sh 68 or so when you play what do you play off of Mark keep up with what I play off oh sh the gravel and the pine straw and I playing everywhere are you playoff unknown exactly I’m native area I oh that’s too good all right well it’s a like Tuesday for us those are few and far between it seems like when it comes to professional golf but with the Travelers Champion ship coming to an end year two of the Signature Events well elevated forly known as the elevator events now Signature Events have come to an end I’m just going to open the floor up to you guys right what went right what went wrong what’s something you’d like to see change what’s something you guys liked the qualification process the FedEx Cup top 50 from the prior year getting in is that too much is that too M uh too little so uh I’m I’m going to open up to the floor anyone can have at it well um I’ll I’ll start I think first and foremost I I do think they worked I think he had some great tournaments with some great finishes um Scotty sheffler dominating these events was a big help uh because you have a superstar can beating all the other superstars on on the PGA tour so I think it definitely worked from that aspect um one of I I I think it that being said I think they can get better and I think the concept is pretty cool but I think there’s a way to improve them um and one thing I might suggest is increasing the field size and adding a cut now it doesn’t have to be full field um doesn’t even have to be close to that but I I think there’s a different energy level at the events when there’s no cut and when there’s a cut and I think you can kind of see in some of the players oh when you’re up near the top the guys near the top of the lead I don’t care if it’s the Hero World Challenge The Travelers or the US Open there’s there’s tension and you can you can tell you can feel it for the most part um but but Thursday and Friday are missing something in the no cut events in my opinion so I think that’s one way that they could be improved okay Mark you got anything to add on to that um I I concur largely I I’ll tell you from the players point of a view because being on the Rangers and stuff players who might not be you know in because of their FedEx Cup ranking from the previous year or the next 10 who earned their way in the fall which I like because it added some value to the fall events and we go saw guys like Ludovic oberg and that sort of crowd make it in through there so so I like that as far as the swing five go goes when I would talk with players who were in contention for that they knew exactly where they were who was in who wasn’t in so it certainly heightened the players attention to try and earn spots into these events so I think as far as what their goal may have been to create player awareness and to make players want to play in them it did because I think if you had to break it down the goal of these events was to basically get more money in the players hands which they succeeded at and they got the players interests um I would like to see events like that have 69 players or a number that’s not divisible by three I’d like them just to figure that out somehow but then by the same token I also understand that you’re supposed to earn your way into these events so um you can’t just be dolling out um invitations because then they become like world golf championships events again so um so I think they were successful um we certainly saw by television numbers there were because they were good players in the field but there’s still some growing to do and I’m sure the folks down in Pont VRA will revisit and next year there may be some tweaks to the stuff yeah and I think uh based off that tiger news KP correct me if I’m wrong of him getting pretty much just a lifetime achievement exemption into these that next year seems like the minimum is GNA be 72 players in this event yeah I yeah I I I think that is correct um I thought I I don’t think there should be sponsor exemptions at all I’m fine with the tiger exemption I I’m not really fine with the other exemptions specifically into these i i i broadly am I think okay with like sponsor exemptions into rocket mortgage classic for example I or at least I understand them I thought the scheduling was bad for the s for the siggies this year Patrick uh you can’t I I just I can’t I can’t do RBC Heritage the week after the Masters I want to do it it’s a great event I want to pay attention to it it’s really really really hard as a I’m taking myself well covering it also but as a fan it’s just like guys like I’ve just you know indulged on on Augusta National for six seven straight days I I need like can you give me like a week or something to to kind of normalize again so I don’t know I I think I think the interesting thing is is they’ve they’ve definitely there’s definitely a split now right on at the highest level between the best players and the everybody else are they gonna formalize that are guys like Scotty gonna continue to be required or not required but like have the expectation of hey you’re gonna play Colonial and Byron Nelson also because that really like I don’t know like it’s just this weird thing where it’s it’s it’s the best events and then it’s the other events events but best guys are kind of playing some of these but not all of them it’s a really weird deal I’d love to see them rotate Signature Events add it add two more and rotate him rotate it to colal take it to the John Deere how cool it would be to see Rory at the John Deere you know I I think that if you don’t do Global tour I think rotating Signature Events would be a uh would be a pretty cool thing yeah I agree with that and I mean you bring up Scotty in the tournaments he has to play I look at someone like Patrick hlay you take out the zerk classic the last time he played in a non-s signature event was in January so pretty much makes up his schedule between the major championships and the players and the Signature Events and that’s pretty much it for someone like him um yeah I think it’d be cool to rotate them I think that’s obviously based on the sponsors and who’s willing to Shell up the increased purses but it’d be cool if like say RBC instead of Harbortown we’re like hey we’ll give out that purse for the Canadian open right yeah that would be cool now the sponsors I think is a really important Point uh also an important thing with sponsor exemptions because they do have to Shell out a significantly greater amount of uh dollars and the return on that is unknown so it’s a big you know it’s a big requirement for them and I think at some point you have to negotiate a little bit and make it work and while you’d like those events to be highly ultra competitive pure meritocracy and that kind of thing at the same time in order to have those with the elevated purses you got to have a sponsor who’s willing to do it and I think that presents a challenge with the sponsor exemption aspect like it it’d be cool to have those last couple spots filled with something like the A on swing five where where there’s a there’s a competition let’s say at the RBC Canadian open and and it’s a leaderboard that we can follow to get in I did feel like the A on swing five and the next 10 was kind of lost this year at least from a fan perspective I know Mark the players know exactly where they stand in that but uh as a as a spectator and as a viewer that kind of leaderboard felt a little confusing to me and and part of that is you have winners who we know get in because because they won an event so they get into the rest of the uh Signature Events which is great but is it are there any spots left you know it just it it doesn’t make it a very clear leaderboard it it’s not easy to follow at that point well that’s where as part of the television broadcast it’s incumbent on us to tell the story of okay how’s the swing five happening and who’s in and who can do what and such like that but the truth of it is is you you you’re paying that time to describe out happening with time that we could be showing more shots and then of course there’s the commercial load you would impair so if we have some tutorial that takes three or four minutes um on on the air we will get smashed by social media because we’re missing Shane Larry hit a 4 round to a par five or something so so so there’s there’s nipping there’s give and take there’s nip and Tuck everywhere um I see what you’re saying about not knowing what’s going on because would sort of find out we’d get word to say if so and so does this then they’re in um and that’s I guess why the players knew but the rest of us would just kind of finding out I think well I mean part of it is like with it as relates to the swing five and the top to whatever I don’t even know what they’re called but uh I I don’t like when they do it so I think about the open Greg I think about the Open Championship like they have all these events throughout the Summer where it’s like hey so and so if they’re top three they get into the open I I genuinely care about like who gets into the open I I don’t know that anything is going to make me care about whether Alex norin gets into the Wells Fargo Championship and so I I just don’t know like I think it just kind of is what it is right I I I and so I guess by that metric or by that statement I would sort of default to saying push it to being yeah the meritocracy so that the players know and all that stuff rather than uh something else interesting I I think my kind of it’s not a Bugaboo is the top 50 from the previous year should they be in all the signature events for the next year do you guys think like it is currently slated um well look the tradition is that like if you make the Tour Championship you get into all the majors and such so there’s so there’s rewards because if you delve into it you’ll sort of see that the reward is for consistency over but nowadays purses that you’re getting and some dude wins $4 million and some 600 FedEx Cup points or whatever it is you can win one of those siggies and you’re basically banking on being in everything the next year so that’s also where I think something needs to be kind of um reconciled maybe because I would like to see a bit more volatility in the stuff because if you playing Signature Events it’s guaranteed money it’s guaranteed points bigger points and if you just play one or two of them you you’ve basically set up the following year so so whereas it’s supposed to reward good play the folks who just on the outside again it’s for to me very much like the wgc’s back in the day that was off well ranking but it was hard to get into those things and it almost proliferated itself so so there’s some tweaking to do and I would like to see more movement and I’d like to see it Force you know some of the Blue Chip guys to maybe have to play in the fall or whatever that looks like in the next go round so right now I’m unsure but but I’m with you over there yeah I think if you’re not going to have a cut then maybe you look at maybe you only offer FedEx cut points to the top 30 or 40 or whatever yeah I I think that is a totally reasonable like somebody like Victor havin or spe or whoever I mean they they’d be in some trouble right Patrick Yeah spe is 53 right now I mean I guess he’s he’s in trouble as it is yeah 47 spe added the John Deere classic which is sick well but then if you get in the 70 and you get in the playoffs you know there’s extra points there too so if you’re in the playoffs you can do a little something special and then make your way in there so there’s still a lot to play for but but but it does have to be adjusted I think a I think a cut in all of them is almost mandatory right now I I agree yes and I think top 50 if you expand the field a little bit and add a cut all of a sudden top 50 this year well that’s an interesting story to follow like I’m I’m very curious to see if Jordan spe gets into the top 50 I’m curious to see if Victor hin can hold on um you know it would be a big deal if those guys didn’t and um and I think having that chase mean something by getting into everything it’s a it’s a good thing uh but at the same time it could feel a little stagnant on the other end um and part of that is because there’s no cut in them okay this is what just came to me and I was seeing Joseph B say yes say would it be 71 for the playoffs because Grayson Murray was 50th um there’s been precedent in the past before I think it likely goes to 71 but don’t quote me on that this is what did occur to me though because remember the goal of these events was to again ke entice players to stay on the PGA tour and not go for the big bucks elsewhere so they’ve achieved that to a certain extent then on the other side of the thing there’s always The Fan Experience and the fans want to see the greatest playing against the greatest week in and week out and not have Fields diluted so you get to these Signature Events and then you have a cut and then you get some Stars off on the weekend the fans aren’t going to be that happy about that sort of stuff either like we’ve had ample conversations over the last little bit saying somehow things over the weekend with regard to pairing groups together needs to change a little bit too so you don’t have like last in first out so you can get like two studs in the final group as opposed to like Matthew pavon or someone and someone else in the final who mark whoa that was the first name that came in my head because Olympian yeah well he’s gonna he’s gonna hold my bet for me but yes the fans want to see the greats playing together then you have a cut then you have spe and Company or whoever it is Miss a cut and then it’s like well you’re defeating the object of these events again so so where stuff has to be sort of looked at and and perhaps Revisited and I think the the hard part for the tour and this this gets I mean I’m as hard on the tour as probably anybody but it the the tour has very difficult job trying to Plate everyone and what Mark is talking about is probably two different groups of people like he’s he’s he’s referencing like the sickos like me who are like no make it more of a meritocracy and then the other group is like the 43 year-old that wants to take his three kids to see Rory at Quail Hollow right they live there because they live there and and and he’s got the weekend off and he just wants to like watch Rory for his kid his seven-year-old wants to see Rory for a hole and you’re like well okay like who who who gets the like who who’s more important there the the the the TV viewer like me who’s like no make it more competitive or or whatever or the 43 year old dad who’s spending 300 bucks 500 bucks on a weekend buying you know food and beverage and gear and whatever I I think I think that’s where it’s like good luck I I don’t I don’t know I I don’t know like how how you can have both of those things I guess yeah you can’t but something needs to be done I think they needs to be a cut even though it’s like ceremonial like where was that one event I think there were 90 guys in in the field and they cut to basically it was Bay Hill yeah they cut like they cut like 11 guys I remember whatever that week was no there was one later on here in the summer and then we still had some Stars miss the cut morial was like n yeah it was like spe think can’t to speeding yeah they’re like all right we’re out of here all right um that’s enough enough of that we got to get to the rocket rocket mortgage classic of course a non-s signature event full field event they in the Motor City but first a quick word football action continues are you ready for as the grid iron is taken over by the great white North catch the Canadian football league on CBS Sports Network and we are back speaking of top 50 in the FedEx Cup Ricky Fowler defending champion at the rocket mortgage classic the lowest man of last year’s top 50 in this year’s FedEx Cup number 91 for Ricky has not been a good year uh this is kind of the Sprint to uh the playoffs right KP for this uh pgb tour so to speak these guys who we haven’t seen for a few weeks because of the schedule with a couple Signature Events and the US Open well they’re back and they got to get going here uh in short order yeah it is and it’s an interesting mix right it’s it’s it’s the Fowlers but it’s also guys like OE and tomon Kim uh who are playing obviously very good golf right and so um yeah I mean Ricky specifically I mean we Greg and I talked about this on Monday but he he pops up last week puts it really good in round one he’s kind of near near that Tom Kim lead after the first round and you’re like oh this is Ricky’s had a like a bad what is he in the FedEx got Patrick he is 91st he is behind Ricky Fowler is behind Terrell Hatton in the FedEx Cup oh my gosh turl Hatton is 83rd in the FedEx Cup he’s he had the two Hawaii starts and then the three major championships but Ricky doesn’t have to worry because he’s got the win the win exemption right yes but more and he’d get all the sponsor exemptions next year of course uh yeah so I I think this week is is it aist stars no is there still Intrigue to be had because somebody like an ox or you know Alex noren even could could get like a a big summer win um yeah there’s still some there’s still some cam young could get his first win there’s still some Intrigue there in terms of storylines for guys that could win but also that need to jump up like Ricky to to like you said make the FedEx up playoffs yeah and Greg Kyle mentioned Detroit Golf Club kind of crowning they they’ve had a lot of good winners even though they’ve only played five times right Bryson Fen now backto back um Ricky Fowler of course last year in the playoffs so it’s a big week and potentially a big week for someone’s career yeah I I think for these players it they’re they’re not looking at it the way that some of the fans may be where hey you know it’s not the best field so it doesn’t mean as much that to everybody who’s teeing it up this week it means a whole lot means a great deal like that was a big win for Ricky Fowler last year that’s why we see him in The Travelers last week that’s why we see him in All In All The Signature Events that’s why he’s okay and he’ll he’ll have an exemption if he misses the playoffs because of what he did here last year uh it was a huge for Tony Fe now it set him off um on another win at the 3M the very next week so it it’s it it is a big deal and one thing that has remained on the PGA tour is winning any event is extremely important and can make a huge difference in in your career so yeah there’s a there’s a lot of players who you know Min W Le another guy looking for his first win cam young I mean these are the favorites in this event right they they can win for the first first time um part of this I do believe is the golf course as well you think about Tony feno and Bryson specifically I think it really suits their advantage of of length off the tea and so there are some guys like cam young that come to mind who um could be set up for a really big week Mark what’s your take on the golf course like Greg said we’ve seen some Boppers contend here and then last last year we saw a lot of uh good iron players I mean Adam hadwin’s not the longest guy colins’s not the longest guy but uh they were in that playoff with rooky well that’s what I was going to say I mean look any golf course rewards power and then you make targets easier to hit but there’s something about this place with some of the layout or some of the holes where it’s not like certain places where Rory and brusson could just bomit over dog licks um the way the fair the trees sit to the fairways it kind of puts a bit of a premium on playing from the Fairway now look when it gets summertime wet because of the storms all or off and then there is an advantage but as far as I’ve experienced it over the last few years um since Co really it’s it’s it’s been quite Democratic and you have to play from the Fairway you really have to be able to control spin to these Donald Russ greens because a lot of them tilt from front to back and if you send something in there spinning hard with a wedge it’s coming back to you and if you hit a ball above the hole you’re putting defensively if you hit the ball whole High curiously which is ordinarily rewarded you’re always going to have some sort of curving putt so it it reward WS distance control to force you to play from underneath the hole a little bit and I love it I I I I think it’s it’s a great venue sadly in an area that’s not very nice but the tournament is doing a lot to bridging that divide too so there’s good stuff on the go and I enjoy going there mark are you a pro Detroit style pizza guy you get involved not really but last week New Haven style oh every day of the week love it oh yeah yeah yeah damn World R now it is World R now you’re right I mean I will actually there’s a place called Frank pepy I’m not getting paid for this I he has a story so we I was had friends in the event we were supposed to go and then we had the late finish Saturday night so we couldn’t then Sunday I’m like we’re going so we get done we go to the restaurant we’re sitting there at the window in the booth and my friend’s son’s looking out the window and this black like SUV pulls up and he goes That’s Colin marawa I’m like no please whatever and he goes no look behind you and colins walked in the back door to pick up a to-go order and I’m like GE Colin marawa so I call him over and he goes yo what’s up he goes this is good stuff isn’t it and he was grabbing pizzas to go on the way to Philadelphia for a corporate outing so yeah it’s even the players enjoy it over there yeah I’ll say this on Peppy’s um Scotty and Tom Kim went to Sally which is on the same street and my humble opinion the only reason you you go to Sally is because you can’t get into peppies yeah there you go well about that place I still haven’t seen it so maybe I should try that next year maybe may I mean Scotty won’t use his name to get out of jail I’d be surprised if he used it to get into a pizza restaurant no way Line’s too long what can we do yeah yeah he he just looks like a big four consultant pretty much walking in there for sure just out of the gym um okay I think uh I think that’s it we got to get to Best Bets one and done all that good stuff but one quick break for a word from our sponsors there’s some new players in town and they brought the plague he got my attention you don’t want that Rob to Kingstown mayor of kingtown new season now streaming exclusively on Paramount plus and we are back rocket mortgage bets this best bet segment is brought to you by FanDuel Sports book where they make every moment more Josh reveal the betting board please if you’re new here Josh gives us 50 for a matchup 30 for a finishing position and two $10 out outright Wagers let’s begin oh Mark you’re targeting a defending Champion to play well this week what is your matchup or for before we do this I I think I had some success last week so I’d love to see the board from that if possible please produce a Josh because I’ve not done very well in this thing at all do we have it oh all right one one moment one moment please um in the meantime yeah I’m G to take a lot of grief for this I’m betting against the homeboy in Eric Fen royan um he’s caddy um GOI is gonna probably have me for this one because he listens to the show um so Alex I’m sorry but I’m going against your boy just because as I looked down this this this uh list of matchup bets I didn’t really see anything worthwhile they were all sort of you know minus bets all evened up and I just saw Cam Davis who’s been playing pretty well he’s one year before said little home course not sort of Home course you know horses for courses cooking going on and uh look Eric is a tough out because he’s playing beautifully he’s got now the Olympic Games he’s earned his spot on the Olympics team for South Africa so that’s big um so maybe he’s freewheeling some but I’m still going to go for the Aussie over the South African and as I’m saying this I’m regretting every minute of it good save there at the end for a potential listener who’s gonna not be too happy with Mark this weekend uh Mark is going with a former Champion Greg you are going against the defending Champion yes um look I I think Ricky’s struggling with his TD green performance um I I I think he’s struggling pretty significantly in that category and last week’s tied 20th was largely on the back of of putting um and and looking at what he did last year heading into the rocket mortgage compared to this year as Kyle and I did last night there’s a stark contrast uh Matt Wallace on the other hand is hitting it pretty well and he seems to really take advantage of some uh weaker Fields if you will he he plays really well in in many of these events and I think he’s a little more reliable than Ricky wow wow against Ricky and KP you have two International superstars on your matchup wager tell the viewers who you got yeah potential president’s got uh team teammates Partners I got menlu over uh over Tom Kim uh Tom Kim Greg and I discuss there you go there you go Mark uh playing nine weeks in a row he’s just I think he’s going to be a little bit emotionally uh worn out from last week there was a lot to take on Scotty there and and everything that kind of unfolded over the last couple hours of that tournament so I love MW was driving uh this week that’s something that Greg pointed out on Monday and it’s good spot for him just to to bang it all over Detroit Golf Club so I’ve got menu over Tom cam plus 125 I like it and I’m going with a plus money wager as well another Iron Man OE batia plus 105 I think this is eighth week in a row so just right behind Tom Kim these 22y olds all they want to do is play golf uh I’m going with Patia over cam young I’m not buying cam Young’s weekend that is classic cam young he does just enough to to pull you in and then he makes you look like a fool I know it’s phenomenal but O’s been playing Great Golf speaking of driving he’s driving the cover off the golf ball as well and I like the way he’s rolling that broomstick so is batia plus 105 over cam young and Mark I believe Josh has the card from last week Josh you want to put that on the screen about this please there you go wow Todd bet was a that was so easy Top 40 for Brendan Todd he finished inside the top 15 I thought it was I mean you’re great at this Victory lapping and a playoff Mark your best bet yeah but you picking Scotty to win that was a biger there yeah so finally a little green on the board for me so I could relish this it’s been a bad season don’t let the kid get hot all right to the finishing positions I’m gonna go with Davis Thompson top 10 four to one he just finished top 10 at the US Open he’s playing great golf played great Myrtle Beach love him on a Donald Ross design he’s played well here so I’m gonna go with the Bulldog at four to one KP lad from Northern Ireland who you got yeah different different lad from Northern Ireland uh I’ve got Tom mcgb top 10 in the Italian Open I think it’s the Italian Open What’s the what’s the tournament in Italy this week the Italian Open I just wanted wanted to make sure well they they have they get sponsor names and who who knows who knows what it’s called Uh yeah he’s been playing awesome he he kind of popped up at the US Open a little bit he’s been as good as anybody in that field from ta to Green over the last 15 20 rounds so I like him to finish in the top 10 in the Italian Open all right KP went across the pond a name like Chan Chandler Phillips Greg he’s not playing across the pond no way tell the view tell the viewers your uh finishing position Chandler Phillips top 30 plus 225 um you know he’s coming off a tied 10th finish at the RBC Canadian open H tied 12th at the Charles Schwab challenge as well he’s been putting really well uh his approach play has been phenomenal and you know one of the other aspects that’s really important here is your wedge play and he is a phenomenal wedge player uh on the PGA tour this year he’s top 10 from 50 to 125 or top 12 I’ll say conservatively from 50 to 125 and um 125 to 150 he’s also a conservative top 12 at least one of those is top 10 the other maybe 12th um so he he’s phenomenal in that area and he’s rolling the ball really well I think you’re going to see a great week out of Chandler Phillips that is Chandler Phillips top 30 plus 225 he is a top 12 wedge player according to Greg in this field Mark little horse for the course action for you who you got yeah I want to but Greg I like that pick but yes’s why I don’t want that to happen because we have I have a friend who’s a big fan of you guys and he listens to the show and texts me with all the picks that you guys make and stuff and he have I he and I have got dinner on Chandler Phillips not making the playoffs he so Chanel is a heck of a player but and I love him I met him with the AR Palmer cup I’d like him to finish 71st so I win dinner um but back to my bets uh Tor Mo I just I know he hasn’t played very well lately but you know the last time I watched him was that Wells Fargo he was in beautiful shape over there um and he’s got a wonderful record at this place played twice hasn’t finished outside the top 10 I think his average finish is like fifth he’s been in the final group and there’s just something and when I asked him he goes I just love the greens around this golf course so a top 20 plus 225 I was like yeah yes please his worst finish in two goes has been sixth so um I’m lacking my chances with Taylor I like it Mark and I’m going going to kick it right back to you because you Greg and I share an outright on this big hitting Canadian why don’t you share both your outright selections well we tailor made right because I’m going with pendri and mo for winners here um uh pendy look he’s he seems to have turned the corner a little bit for me this year he was always the big talented Canadian guy very athletic who hit the ball far um but I didn’t really finish stuff off then he hung in there and won in Dallas at the CJ cup to Byron Nelson and he just looks like that’s kind of galvanized his belief in in himself and he’s played well year before he’s been around and about the lead I covered him last year and plus 3,000 I thought there was a nice bet and then tayor wor heck I mean look it’s e to me it’s easy to kind of go with maybe Tom Kim or maybe someone up the board Taylor Mo it’s time now if he likes this place so much to finish one off so so let’s go with Taylor I like it and Greg like I said you too have pendrith but who is your other selection my other selection is min wo Lee um like Kyle said earlier like we said yesterday I think he could really take advantage of his distance here on this golf course um which which should go a long way for him and he also can get so hot with the putter I think that kind of combo could lead to a a breakthrough victory for Min wo Le this week who by the way in his last five events every finish has been between 21st and 26th I think crazy yeah I think it’s time for that to you know spike a little bit we we’re due for a spike due for a spike and Kyle you’re attempting to do the impossible this week I am I’m trying to go four for four in this cat or in this uh on our betting board I’ve got uh I’ve got Patty Reid I think he’s going to uh I think he might go to Italy and try to do what his uh his colleagues could not last October and and get a win uh oh perhaps send a a message across to the United States I mean who can say and then I I too have been sucked back in by cam young I it’s I mean the weekend I think he shot 125 on the weekend or whatever which is insane but it’s also it’s not just that Patrick it’s also and you listed him earlier but the guys that have won at this golf course you’re like he kind of fits in like really good with that profile like the Bryson fenale you know that cim Davis like that type so yeah it’s it’s foolish but I’m I’m sucked back in yeah no he everything points to cam young it’s almost like a oh this is way too good to be true type of situation yeah no no way he wins his first one this week um I I’m going with pendrith as well and then I’m taking a shot in the dark on Lee Hodes Tony now right he won at the 3M open in the rocket Mortage classic obviously back to back Lee Hodes 3M Open winner last year iron play is in Fuego over the over the last handful of months as well so I think he gives it a good run at 75 to one that is pendrith at 30 for Greg Mark and I Mark also has Taylor Moore at 50 Greg has mm Le at 20 Kyle going for the perfect grid The Impossible I’m rooting for him Patrick Reed 12 over in Italy C young 16 to1 in the Motor City and I got Hodges at 75 to1 as well but that is not all ladies and gentlemen because the best bets are coming the Money Ball Josh gives us 50 more dollars in Mark you have a one week winning streak Are You Gonna Keep it going in Detroit this weekend what do you got I figured the only way to keep this or to now make it a streak because one Victory is luck and to well threes a streak so I’m on the way and the only way to do that is with a positivity parlay right following your lead so I’m with a four balll to make the cut Aaron Ry Davis Thompson Will zalatoris and Cashmere Keith Mitchell to make the cuts plus 250 let’s go I love the strategy Mark everyone knows once you win one bet immediately put it into a parlay that is gambling 101 unfortunately one of your colleagues Mr Kyle Porter thinks it’s gonna be a loser JP what do you have yeah I’ve got Wills Alors to misstic cut he he hasn’t been very good so far this year at least by his standards I and I like him better on very difficult golf courses I think sometimes he can kind of spiral when he is not making putts and in a difficult Golf Course is you know like US Open type courses you don’t you just have to lag put it well and and it seems like he is doing that better than he is making a ton of birdies so I don’t know we’ll see it was just kind of something that popped out to me as I was looking through everything the boys are at odds we are not at odds with Greg’s pick considering Mark and myself love him this week as well as Greg Greg what do you got yeah Taylor pendrith top 20 uh also have an outright on him in case my other outright pulls through and pendri doesn’t uh I’m going with him at a top 20 at plus 160 I think it’s a really good number for him uh it should be a great course fit he just like cam young young fits that mold but unlike cam young young has been very hot on the greens you’re talking about uh um six out of his last seven it’s actually a lot more than that but in six out of his last seven he’s gained 2.9 Strokes or more on the greens and really only twice All Season he’s lost Strokes with the putter I think that’s an important thing when you’re trying to get into the you know mid 20s in order to win and I think you can do it little insurance policy play insurance policy Play I Like It Greg I’m completely lost when Scotty shuffler does not play golf um so I went with Alex norin to win at 30 to1 if this somehow cashes you guys won’t be won’t be hearing from me for a couple weeks take I’ll be taking a vacation or something um so that is nor in to win at 30 to1 KP has got zator to miss the cut at plus 175 Greg insurance policy play of the week Taylor pendrith top 20 plus 160 and mark the positivity parlay reappears Aaron Ry Davis Thompson Wills alot Torres in cashme Keith Mitchell all to make the cut at plus 250 one final segment boys and girls the one and done bit of a weird week could do a lot of things Josh is telling me to sign off with FanDuel because I forgot that’s GNA happen this best bet segment was brought to you by fandu sports book I’d like to think we made every moment more just as they do all right Josh get those oneandone picks up I have not seen them yet I have not I do not know what the boys have done and wow we’ve got uh only two riding together KP 7.7 million in the basement 10 behind the leader who do you have uh I’ve got I’ve got minwoo uh which is um not great considering Greg has him as well but uh yeah I’m I’m excited to to see minwoo do minwoo things this week Greg you’re in sixth overall yeah yeah and uh KP you know that actually the last time you and I picked the same player it worked out very very well for us yeah I’m I’m just I’m tailing Greg to try to Lea frog everybody else yeah I’m I’m fine with having A10 million lead on second so if you get up there to Second KP I’m all for it sorry Patrick yeah sorry Mark it’s fine he’s kind of he’s just drafting behind you at this point right little car you’re you’re taking all the are resistance out yeah just try not to finish him last so kp’s got minimu at 77 Rick went with OE batia he’s at 8.2 producer Josh Taylor pendrith nice pick we like that at 8.5 and Mark in the podium spot in the hole you two have gotten sucked in by who I did well well first off my my PL here let me be honest with you my one and done um whatever the word is play for the year has been desperate I’m all over the show I left my plan I left the plan and I’m just reacting so when I made this call this morning I was like well I’m gonna try and Zig when everyone else is zagging and I figured I’d see a minwoo pick and I figured I’d see an AET pick and I’m trying my best to save Tom Kim for the Windom but I get word that he’s probably not going to play after the Olympics and then I’m trying to save Brian Harman for uh for John Deere and I gave he’s not going to play John de so the whole thing’s a mess right now so I need something and Cameron young um before he went to the dogs in the final round I was sent out to cover his group and we’re about to go on the air and I get a a message from my producer s shy he goes Mark drop back to F now he just made birdie he’s in second but I was with um Cameron young and he was playing 13 there of that par five at River Highlands it’s the wind there’s out of bounds bunkers down the left water on the right and he just sets up there and smokes this long fade down the right started over the water the edge of the water and cuts it there to the right center of the Fairway and I was like sweet Jesus this is one of those shots that I will remember and it sort of reminded me of a fivewood that Justin Thomas hit at the Byron Nelson on the par five that I used the following week at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills to to pick him and he won so I’m hopefully I’m scratching I’m looking for something over here but I feel like Cameron young it’s time now because he he was off to a flyer I mean he’s putting the thing well similar Greens in terms of the surfaces he’s driving it great why not have a flutter okay okay if it worked for JT maybe it’ll work for uh work for Cameron young I’m just going to say I think that’s a bit of a stretch to correlate those two but I’ve been wrong before mark I’m gonna go with Alex noren uh I am I was conf confused this week I didn’t really know what to do but noren’s been awesome this year I feel like I’ll get minimum top 20 out of him which who knows if he has the winning upside on the PGA tour he has not proven it but our faithful leader Greg duch all the way up to 17 I’ll give you 17.9 you’re well out in front you’re chasing down the overall competition like we said you minie you got anything else to add I’m within two I’m I’m inside of two million which is really nice um but up here it’s tough because these guys know what’s going on so I’m guessing there’s another Min woi play ahead of me um but yeah I I think I think he’s the right pick this week because I’m I’m with you a little bit here Patrick I don’t think there’s a clear play Tom Kim who’s the favorite you have some questions about the amount of golf he’s played OE the same deal cam young is it for real uh I just feel like minwoo is about to pop with all of those t21 t26 it’s somewhere in between there I mean it’s it’s been incredibly consistent I think I think good is coming before bad so hopefully hopefully we got this one right this week I appreciate the subtle jab the the guys up there know what’s going on because the guys on this podcast with you do not clearly not a jab not a jab this is uh these are not the events that get you up very high in the one of done standings um but now that all the Signature Events are behind us they become extremely important so we’re trying to save players you know we’re trying to save it for the playoffs for the open all that it’s getting challenging and my list of available players is is dwindling rapidly but I thought this was a nice opportunity to get some win Equity a realistic chance at a winner and at the same time I don’t feel like I’m I’m losing out down the road that’s a good point it’s going to be tough to uh make up some ground before the playoffs but uh we’ll see that is minu Lee for Greg du at 17 .9 I’m on Alex norin at 13 flat Mark with Cameron young at 9.3 producer Josh Taylor pendri 8.5 Rick’s got OA batia at 8.2 and KP brings up the rear with minu as well at 7.7 like Greg mentioned the US Open himman KP Bryson Des Shambo let’s see if they can do it again Shock the World Greg as for as for the leaders of the competition defoy Numero Uno 9 19.7 golf duck second 18.7 so I mean he he’s got a pretty good lead JT spelled out 18.6 Denver do sweeper at 18.2 I’m gonna butcher this name uh Shan K kedy shyen KY what do you guys think pretty good your guess is as good as mine might be can shett C shet Canan shett uh please comment if we announc pronounced that wrong probably did 18.1 and Greg dearm woo bringing it up for the first cut boys 17.9 could be a big week for Greg gentlemen you guys got anything else you need to get off your chest the time is now I’m all yours uh miles 15y old debut oh PJ tour debut excited yeah he’s gonna be fun to watch finished T20 at the corn Fair event like a month ago yeah the uh we do the swing theories on the tour and they quickly reached out to me last weekend and they sent the footage over they’re like hey can you do a quick swing analysis of this for the social media and the YouTube account it’s a cool looking action he’s he looks like he’s he’s got some game about him always need more lefties on tour too always are you Lefty Patrick I am oh that’s right I’ve seen your swing yeah smooth swinging come on a little pause at the time what’s your what’s your uh what’s your swing speed oh gosh I haven’t been on a system I got fitted for like Fairway woods and a driver oh gosh deoe paid for them so must have been four years ago deoe play paid for your clubs yeah it was awesome little wellness package nice yeah I mean that’s what I miss most about Consulting honestly it’s just like you can spend anything you get a golf job and you can’t get golf stuff anymore you’re telling me man you’re telling me either that’s the joke about what was your what was your I didn’t even hear your numbers back then yeah oh gosh um I carried my 3-wood like 250 okay I think I carry my I think I carry my driver like 285 okay um I don’t know like my speeds though less than Greg I’m actually getting FIT tomorrow so I I can report back next Tuesday oh nice yeah get the tit do I you’re doing Titleist again oh yeah you’ll love it yeah I’m excited all right that is good to hear all right I think I’m just bring the I’ll bring the graphic of numes we can just break it down oh yeah definitely got to do that we’re gonna get deep in the numes but until then this was your rocket mortgage classic preview for KY Porter numes Galore you can find him at kowp Porter CBS for Greg du our faithful leader you can find him at the real gfd and for Marky Mark imman you’ll be hearing his Sweet Tones this weekend you can find him at markor imman I am Patrick McDonald this was the first cut we’ll see you guys next time [Music]

  1. I thought the sig events were ok. I blame the media (not this channel) of how the full field events were covered. The media has been spoiled by Scottie winning all the time. I remember when Chris Kirk won Sentry (wheres are the superstars), Wyndham at Pebble Beach (again where are the superstars) Hideki Tigers (big boys dont care) Scottie starts winning everybody loves him. Scottie has like 5767 pts. He does all of his winning in the sig events and the Masters. They need to give more points for the Full Field events. I know people will say the have nots have to play better but how will they when they dont have playing opporunities. A lot of them in the field this week are coming off not playing since maybe RBC Canadian Open. Sam Stevens had to play Wichita Open on the Korn Ferry tour just to keep his game in shape. He was t-2 there. I think the superstars are using LIV as an excuse. They dont want to admit they are scared of the Korn Ferry grads coming out and dominating the fall. Jake Knapp is the only Korn Ferry grad in top 50. He is 45th. Chris Gotterup is next closest at 83rd. Adam Scott and Webb Simpson got 5 sponsor exemptions. Thats the problem. The sponsor invitees went to policy board members. Some people would think the sig events werent good cause there were no davids for the goliaths.

  2. If someone withdraws from a signature event before it starts they should have the next best guy in…also agree with the signs being back to back with majors…I also agree the sigs should have a cut and that the overall product to the fans would be more exciting.

  3. I don't think the current signature event structure is fair, particularly to the players who are outside the bubble of the top 70 (70-150 ranked guys). It gives those in the top 70 a year worth of exemptions giving them a lot more opportunity to remain in the top 70. And probably the worst modern structure is it gives a tour winners a 2 year exemption, which is waaaaay too much of a fast tract over the guys who get 2nd's 3rds and consistent finishes. The points and average points should dictate who's in the top 70 and a winner will earn more points in of itself (typically twice as much as second gets) over someone who gets 2nd or 3rd, so let that stand on it's own.

  4. I don't think Kyle's example of a guy spending $300 so his kids could see Rory play is a good example, which I understand he's bringing it up as devils advocate. Tiger Woods for the most part is a bit of anomaly and for the most part the only exception to that rule to where it will only draw people who may want to see Tiger and Tiger alone. But me personally I don't even agree with giving Tiger Woods exemptions, but that's aside from the point. But for the most part a players popularity and interest is going to be based on how we'll they're competing. Watching Jack Nickolas play at 80 isn't going to do a damn thing for me or anyone else, which is the utmost extreme example (a realistic example is a good player who's slumping and not contending in many tournaments for a period of time), but watching a player play who's a shell of their former self… i don't get it. I guess for some people it's being in the vicinity of a famous person that they get off on. It's a mental illness why cater to it. It has nothing to do with competition. But for the most part if you list the top 10 most popular players who are competing currently… there's really no one off the charts. Spieth, Rory, Scheffler, Bryson I would theorize are some of the more popular players, but golf fans deserve more credit… I think for the most part fans are going to like the guys who are playing well over big names alone. And the popularity for the most part is pretty well dispersed between the current players contending. And some times a players popularity is built over the duration of that one event. For whatever reason they'll build a large amount of support in that one event.
