Will curtains, placed 12” from finished side walls, protect them from hard hit balls?

I’m trying hard to get my simulator room done right the first time safely and within my budget. I’m struggling right now with best side wall protection options. I originally planned to go with an enclosure but my room is small and I’m afraid it’ll look like a cave.

So then I was looking at covering the walls with 2” gymnastics/yoga mats (4’ x 10’ x 2” @ $93 each) but I’m concerned with bounce back.

I’m now thinking about using heavy curtains to protect my finished side walls. I’ve read that if placed 12” from the wall, a hard hit ball should drop before hitting it. Is this fact?

This should work fine. I hit in my garage with cinderblock walls and have heavy curtains about 8 inches from the wall. I have hit several shanks and the curtains catch them and it doesn’t bounce all over.

  2. What are your plans for the ceiling if you’re not using an enclosure

I hope you have an understanding wife you are really close to living area. I have mine on a 3rd floor with a door going to attic and 1 going into the room with attic door and my wife wants to kill me. I get up so early and would love to hit balls and NO. Also the ball makes a horrible noise hitting floor with insulated floors under the on, 1”gym tiles and turf. You may want to try to get something to block that opening maybe even curtains to close up when hitting. I can’t tell how deep it will feel with the room depth and what unit you are using but closing that opening may be smart for you

    BTW it looks AWESOME!!!

If you are really worried, you could do a memory foam mattress topper in a duvet cover with metal eyelets.

I have the curtains and they work well. I did Velcro on mine. Both to the screen and to the floor (turf). Zero balls get through. However, if you do not have the curtains attached by Velcro to the screen you may see balls “ride” the curtain then sneak between the two.

I bought blackout curtains from Amazon and they have enough weight that I think you’d be fine. If you are really worried about it another inexpensive way to protect the walls is just get a couple sheets of plywood and put them up behind the curtains. Won’t matter since they will be covered and the curtain will for sure dissipate enough of the force to stop the ball, a thin sheet of plywood would just protect the drywall enough to make sure there’s no mark.

I used large exercise mats..they were about 4’x8’ and about 3” thick..my handyman screwed them into the wall..works great for an occasional shank..yikes!
