An Epic 2024 U.S. Open Recap from the Ecco House | The Shotgun Start

An all-time U.S. Open finish, one where Andy and Brendan spent the whole afternoon chasing the final two groups, demanded the beefiest of episodes. The two jump right into it, going in-depth on watching Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, and all that Pinehurst provided both as a course and venue for this epic championship. They discuss Bryson’s incredible day, his crazy finish, his amusing quotes about trophy-sharing and chocolate milk, and his future majors ceiling. They discuss Rory’s rough finish, whether or not he choked, how he comes back from it if he even does, and if his exit could be excused. Then they empty out the rest of their notes on Pinehurst maybe affirming its status as an “anchor” site, Pat Cantlay’s actual close call, the NBC broadcast, and more. Thanks to all for your continued support of this podcast that allows us to get out on the road during these major weeks. Apologies for the technical difficulties on the video for the last segment!

greetings and welcome to a Monday edition of the shotgun start it is June 17th Andy how we doing Brendan I gotta say um I’m doing I it’s a mixed bag what’s that mean what golf tournament an incredible golf tournament an incredible way to spend a Sunday afternoon and evening uh it’s just I we’ve done these together now five plus years I think this is the sixth major year uh it’s up there it’s way up there uh it was as it was for sure as cool of an arena as I’ve ever been in on golf I’ve not done this the longest by far not saying I’ve done it a long time done but we’ve done these podcasts together for like the 2019 Masters when tiger won when Phil won at kiaa a bunch of others uh for my money like the back in fourth not just the resolution obviously like the stakes that was like as drama and as crazy as I can recall for the last few hours it was a quintessential I think one of the things about Golf and just the sport is you unlike almost like any other sport you invest so much time into these major championships for like devoted golf fans you invest maybe 10 15 20 plus hours of your time into watching a competition and you you do that for finishes like this and there was gut-wrenching heartbreak on one side and you know a guy that celebrated like we’ve never seen before on the other you know celebrated and is going to enjoy a big night of chocolate milk on the other side so so I think uh it there there was amazing shots and and uh but man it it was uh it it was a hell of a golf tournament it was the Pinehurst was amazing Rory was amazing uh obviously amazingly painful too there at the end Bryson was at just a circus like missing every Fairway scrambling to make par U obviously to the very end it’s ending tonight with Johnson Wagner performing circus tricks on the 18th green just all the way around it was like it was like one thing after another my notebook was just completely full I thought pinor was like the perfect perfect sort of stage for it at least being on the ground I I can’t recall sort of the the tension being like floating through the air from one te to the next Green and and from middle of Fairway to the green ahead and it just being so visible like all five senses could feel it from one group to the next right it just was I I we’ll talk more about the stage I think but that was as good as it’s it’s as it’s been uh I got to talk about the chocolate milk let’s let’s start at a moment of levity real quick about the golf course this is just real quick I think what that the tension you’re talking about those greens being so DED they just it provides such a like cut and dry safe and not safe and then the shots around the greens are so treacherous because the short grass like you know that Short Grass if you don’t clip it just right with those fronts it can be like disastrous where the ball rolls back to your feet yeah that that that makes for just such high like every shot feels so important because if you just get to the wrong place it can be a disaster and it and it’s just fractions and it’s unlike anything else right like there are a lot of places with great greens but there aren’t I I don’t I can’t think of any other course where the penalty for a just below exceptional shot receiv receiv so much you know like you can be in just such a bad spot um so chocolate milk no no I just let’s keep talking about the course not not in- depth but uh I think for what I just to elaborate on what I said further and what you’re saying um there’s I don’t know if it’s the routing per se we we’ve dissected it you know tooth and nail like every every n Soup To Nuts uh from the architecture standpoint and it was all that and more I thought and the setup was pretty very was quite strong but it it’s the way the routing works it’s golf professional golf has become such a big game right it it’s played on such these big stages the walk backs couple of walk backs were kind of nutty like 12 but I I don’t know if it’s the routing the Ross routing the way it’s not back and forth cuz that would be hard it’s like it’s back and then to the right and then there’s a triangle and then there you know it’s open right you can so clearly see there’s the transitions are pretty tight in a lot of places for a 7500 yard course and a major championship like you know 17 green to 18t um you know that triangle down in um you know 12 13 14 and being there I’m sure it was awesome to watch on TV but being there being able to see essentially I thought it was it it benefited them not being in the same group for this kind of dynamic to play out and I don’t know that that it would at another big ballpark I don’t know if it would be like that at necessarily LACC or something like that where one green is so far ahead coming down the stretch right it’s kind of like end to end I mean we saw such a similar tournament last year between the two and it wasn’t as connected as it was this this year and Bryson talked about it in his in his post round um interview just how he was able to just by the Roars by the by the noise by the chance understand what was going on at all times and I’m sure Rory knew the same thing like I I mean like I followed Rory I watched a lot of Bryson I was streaming too at the same time and I was able like you would I’d watch a shot and you know I know Bryson had 20 feet I’d run up and then I knew I could hear the Roar and then I would watch the putt you know 20 seconds later when the The Telecast showed it right you know and it was just it was a crazy I I think the two triangles are are like awesome like kind of like epicenters of action you know you have 3 four five on the 3 four five6 on the front on the on the front nine and then you on the back nine you get that 12 13 14 12 133 14 is awesome right there and then you come come back for the finish with you know 15 16 17 uh 18 really great Championship venue um I uh I love watching golf there this week it yeah it was it was amazing we’re just establishing those some of these spots and let’s just be honest like they completely indulged it too I mean Rory talked earlier this week about how he doesn’t watch the coverage in the morning uh because he doesn’t you know he just doesn’t want to see what’s going on he wants to discover it himself and like plot doesn’t want to influence his own strategy some people say they don’t watch leaderboards like this was like fullon both players could see each other we’re completely indulging it we’re nodding like we’re staring at like Roy was continually looking back to see if Rory uh to Bryson’s Drive had made it in the Fairway on whatever it was whether it be 14 or 13 he’s on the 14th T and Bryson’s Drive comes bombing in or if it’s 15 green he lands on top 17th green he lands on top with Rory right there at the T box Bryson on the other side immediately looking ahead seeing the Roars obviously Rory just made a putt at 10 Rory just made a putt at uh 12 uh 13 go like he could hear and see all that Bryson I I was standing right there Bryson walked onto the 13th t and a fan goes you hear that Bryson as Rory makes his what was obviously a birdie putt ahead I’ve never felt that and like they indulged it you could see them looking at each other Bryson usually audibly but Rory always looking back to see where Bryson’s Drive was or to see where that part three t- shot I just landed it was incredible the what it was not didn’t need a journalist trying to you know imply or impose or see something more that wasn’t there like it was like they were providing it they were indulging this sort of back and forth as you know they they went back and forth on the leaderboard quite frankly Rory started three shots down to start the day for a moment was one up at five for for like a millisecond um and then he gets two up at was it was it 12 by the time where he got two up uh 13 so when he birdied 13 Bryson bie 12 he got to two up so and and of course you know I assume if you’re listening to this you know how it ended he did not end two up he gave one away at 15 he gave one away at 16 bogie 15 bogie 16 bogie 18 um Bryson Bogi 15 with the with a pretty bad his own very bad missed shorty um and Rory obviously missed Shorty’s at 16 and 18 as you’ve seen uh I think the 161 was significantly worse not significantly it was just worse I I don’t want to get into the negative it was worse the 18 had a little bit seemed harder do you agree with that yeah um I think that when you were St when you were at that 16th green it it felt like it was Rory’s to lose and and um you know he was in such a good spot and I you know almost makes the the first Putt and the Justin Ray stat of like 394 of 394 inside 3 ft and it was you know simple Putt and and uh a little bit of a pull there and then you know what the natural thing is when you pull a short Miss uh sometimes you put push one later and I think that’s what happened on on 18 it was that was a tricky pot I soon as he hit that chip up I was like that’s a hard putt cuz it’s you know I think it was outside a ho four-footer uh outside the left um you know you you feel I I think like everybody who’s ever played golf at at any competitive level has probably been where Rory is now no very few have played golf at the competitive level that Rory had this happen at you think they have that level of heartbreak kind of I think I mean there’s You’ missed you you it doesn’t matter if it’s a Club Championship or whatever it it’s a feeling of numbness and and I the stakes for Rory are bigger than your Club Championship but like anything like when you’re when you’re hurt when you hurts it hurts and um you know that was that was a it was a gut-wrenching way for way way to lose a major with the stakes I would just add like the stakes being different I think also is the very obvious context here of a of a 10-year major drought that seemed to be ending with a handful of other recent like brutal heartbreaks of Sundays that like I don’t know I wouldn’t say he necessarily played bad in any of them has played great golf um so there’s that context right of of all right fine it’s over with he’s finally ended the drought he doesn’t he doesn’t do it in in like pretty excruciating fashion that that Hill Ru uh I I imagine forever um I you know I think the thing too today today felt different than um St Andrews and LA today the putts went down the putt went down on one first first hole right the putt went down on 12 the putt went down on on 10 that was a great putt he made on 10 um made the putt on nine you know he made putts and I think that’s the thing when you go back to St Andrews and you go back to LC he put himself in in great positions and just couldn’t make putts it was the exact same Playbook he was so smart all week long with his targets um he played exceptional Golf and then to have it you know I think this the hardest part about this one is the way it happened and you know it was uh it was something you know unlike the other ones where the P you’re saying the 20f Footers the I I just couldn’t make a 15-footer I didn’t make a 10-footer this one comes down to you know I I missed a couple shorties coming in and that’s that is going to stick with you for a long time and I I um it’ll be interesting to see how Rory approaches the next you know he got TR in three weeks or four weeks essentially um he’s got traveler next he’s got traveler he’s got a signature event big as nearly as big a purse as this week I think US Open surpassed I loved your Tweet let’s just like I think we were walking out you’re like was this too soon so the good news on the bright it was not too soon it was on brand listen a lot of people a lot of people that that listen to this podcast probably think that I’m like a negative human being and I I said someone once said to me Andy you’re you’re eternal optimist and I go really you think that and they’re like you started a company from scratch and that was completely crazy and you have to be an eternal optimist if if you do that and this was just me thinking about the bright the quote or what was the Tweet he said on the bright side for Rory side for Rory he gets the biggest allotment of FedEx Cup points so in a way if you if you’re FedEx Cup fan if you’re a big if if you consider FedEx Cup the biggest thing in golf Rory won the tournament he did he got I mean Bryson’s in eligable so I just think that’s probably you know it’s a just consolation right you know I I just you have the trophy I get my full 700 or whatever it is I should have fired an email and PGA Tour coms I I I dropped the ball here but I was wondering does he get 750 or does he get 500 you know why why wouldn’t you get 750 well is it like when an amateur wins a tournament and then the second place finisher gets the first place check so if if the FED if BR so Bryson get doesn’t get the 750 that this you know the major worth now right yeah soes that mean Rory gets 750 or does he get second place money second place FedEx Cup I think they get the full first place because I mean we’ve done this now a few times I can’t believe that uh we we will get into Bryson but there’s no script for this show we don’t play it the live fans are going to be mad the not everything not everything not everything needs to be viewed through the lens of live versus the PGA Tour like I’m going to say Bryson didn’t play that great to today does that mean I hate Bryson or the Liv like of course he made a bunch of amazing shots we’ll talk about but we’re on Rory first and that wasn’t planned necessarily um he missed a two foot 6in putt on the 16th hole his first Miss from inside 3 feet he had made the previous 496 putts inside uh 3 feet uh he hit it he hit it great I I just think this one has to hurt the most he blew out of the parking lot there was some criticism about that like did he need to talk well we address that later I just wanted to talk about the golf he hit it he hit it in a way different than than some prior Sundays starting from one when he poured it in right and it was the put the putts went in today and that was the thing I think like that was the difference between the way he played at I mean [ __ ] he was four under on I mean we talked last night about can some somebody can go out and shoot 66 shot 69 he he gave away you know I I think I think one of the things that’s going to go underrated and everybody’s going to look at like the three bogeys in the last four holes the bogey on 15 was [ __ ] unbelievable that was like a great bogey like to to hit to where you know he landed in the middle of the green he got a nuclear bounce there huge bounce huge bounce like you want to talk about all the things these putts like he got a big bounce there it goes over and then it ends up in tough town you know get just get the Short Grass it went and to keep that ball on the green was like an extraordinary shot yeah so and then he goes and he hits two great shots on 16 hits a good putt play it perfect me and then just like yeah I mean it got he got a nuclear bounce on 15 Bryson hit a similar shot and it stayed maybe you know it’s a little higher I I don’t know maybe he hit it a little higher with with high Ro was coming in with a fade too it was interesting I couldn’t I was kind of shocked at how big the bounce was it was several feet off the air and then at from that point on obviously he like slowly kind of blooded into the house he got good breaks 133 and 14 off the did he just slam it off the backboard yeah he he he said I know what what to do here I’m I’m the Prince of hanra and I know where to go just he is he’s he’s got he’s fully enlightened he understands the architecture and he understands the infrastructure he’s got both next time it’s here that grand sand can’t be there especially if they’re going to make it drivable push it up it has to be 10 yards back it won’t it’s got to be back into tough town it’s you know that’s true can’t be on top of tough town and then 14 apparently got a I I didn’t see it but a great break off the fans or not great but bounce off the fans I hitting hitting a big offline had some benefits out there because you get away from those little the little toughs that could bother you and obviously he got a he then he got a bad break on 18 being right up on a tuft right he couldn’t get through the ball clean behind it could in front of it and Bryson got not brys a good lot but he had the tree branch so that’s where he got kind of jammed well both of them deserve to get jammed they both hit bad t- shots and I want one of the questions I’d have you know if what what the direction the the reasoning behind hitting driver was for Bryson or for Rory who had hit three-wood all week long made birdie made Birdie on on the first day with three-wood um had found I think he found the Fairway or he might have missed it right on uh on Saturday but you know that Fairway got so small I think he might have thought he could just hit it over that little patch they got stuck in I’m not sure if that was the reasoning um but um yeah I you know I wonder about the the the driver there but then he hit that he hit an awesome Chip Shot I I I feel like we’re doing a bunch of play byplay but it was I think this was the one where you do the playby playay I think we’ll talk about some of the high level stuff but I we were there I honestly I in my notes I make efforts not to do play byplay and I felt like every time I was just writing these notes that were all right Roy stares back at Bryson’s ball on this hole it was that it was that kind of like different acts right like 10 acts almost really from the eighth when Roy made his Birdie on nine and Bryson May up and down on eight I felt like that was like the full game on scenario from there all the way in the last three hours yeah and I think like the thing that’s going to get lost on on the ending was how good some of the stuff Rory like the up and downs on seven and eight were extraordinarily great they were great up and downs that he had there back to back that kept it going like he he wasn’t giving away the shots and but like God it’s just you you’re gutted for for a guy that you know hasn’t won a major 10 years and and this is the way to have it kind of fumble out of your hands it’s just I mean it it’s crazy 18 you’re talking about the driver there were there were 53 pars seven birdies and only 13 bogeys um he was one if you had told me from where they were lying to that Rory would make the five and Bryson would make the four uh I would have been shocked or yeah line three I guess I would say line three line three I mean Bryson or you know right in front of the green and 55 Yard bunker shot that be the one yeah sorry I’m mixing it up now lying too you know what I mean I have a the green versus 55 Yard bunker Rory needs if Rory makes a putt for par on 18 do you think Bryson they were asking about that yeah I I don’t know if he makes it but I think like his strategy is the same like I think he’s he’s he said tonight on live from I make that four or five times out of a 100 that up and down I don’t know maybe he’s undering himself there did John Wagner ruined the lore of that shot by going out there and hitting it closer good take a good take uh there just weren’t a lot of Bogies there and uh Bryson I mean you want to talk about just the the margins of golf so by I haven’t counted Rory’s official stats but I believe Rory had two three putts in 72 holes he three puted the six hole yesterday and then he three puted 16 today Bryson had zero three putts until the 15 15 so one guy has one three putt I believe the other guy had two three putts Rory loses by one um to put a bow a little bit on some of the Rory stuff I I think people will ask like did he choke did he like gag it away did he um did he lose it more than Bryson won it I think it’s it’s I don’t know if I don’t know what kind of weight or percentage I’m going to get like he’s I would say Rory’s finish is equally of much of the story they’re equal parts of the story Rory’s finish and Bryson’s finish um I don’t know chok’s a pretty loaded term that people use I I could I I wouldn’t I wouldn’t say you’re a complete hot take artist lunatic if you start throwing that out there when a guy misses two putts that were inside one was inside 3 feet one was 4 feet in the last three holes people are going to say that um great up and down at 17 miss the green at 17 got up and down I mean Bryson hit a bad putt at 17 like that that was not getting the ho as soon as it came off the face and so I I wouldn’t shout you down I I don’t know that I can go there yet uh I need to I mean we’re recording this it’s it’s it’s a tough finish to excuse I’ll put that way I uh I’ve never loved the term choke yeah you you’re on the record about that I I think like when these things happen in competitive golf I think like I like this’s a lot different than Vandal who like sure completely lost it like I think the thing that can happen with competitive golf is that when it when it goes it’s not like it just like leaves you it just things just move faster for a period of time and and they unravel and and I think probably the Miss on 16 you know let’s just say he bogeyed 17 right and he he had made the putt on 16 and he just didn’t get up and down or something you know he had a bad bunker shot like this I don’t think he misses the put on 18 the putt on 18 to me felt influenced by the put on 16 um and I I don’t think that’s I was S standing right there and I just he was over the ball for he had stepped off the ball a few times and on the back nine and I think like I think one of the things in pro golf like you see guys step off the ball and there were different reasons why you know some some of them times it was a crowd but like there were other moments where he stepped off the ball and sometime and like I you see guys step off shots and it felt like when he was on 18 green I was standing there and I was like God he’s over this pot a long like it felt like he was over the pot longer than and he was usually I haven’t taken a stopwatch to it yeah but it felt like he was over it a long time and usually when you’re overshot for a while that means that you’re thinking about stuff and the thing about putting that’s weird is like you so rarely see someone step out of a putt the way they would off the tea yeah like and when you get and I just I think and it’s easy for somebody it’s easy for me to say I’m not not standing over the putt yeah I’m not but that was a moment where like he had done it a few times on shots where I think getting out of that Putt and resetting cuz it it just and it just felt like he was over the putt a long long time and longer than he usually is over putt there there’s something about that you’re hitting on something I think that’s pretty insightful like guys don’t do that very often there’s something about like there’s like an admission that this four-footer has got me a little nervy and maybe like it’s worse maybe in some cases I’m not saying maybe it’s worse if you step off and then you re reset and it’s like you’re wow this is this does have me sort of on the back foot to use I feel like one of the things that people guys that might do it if you use the line like you see guys like yeah readjust and I think that might be like he doesn’t use the line no um and I wonder like yeah I I don’t know and I you know I don’t know if we’ll ever know exactly what what was going through his mind um but I I do I do think like I mean this is the hard thing with golf like the last thing if you miss a putt left the last thing you would ever want is a left left to right slider to win to like win a tournament like if you had just missed a putt a short putt last I mean it was it was like a nightmare com uh um combination in terms of as someone who missed a fair fair share of short putts in their life sure you know sure um yeah it was it was tough it was tough long day for us we started the morning at midpines well we’re going to get the Bryson here in the morning uh but our feet were great I met I met 24,000 steps that’s because I had my you were up at 29 you you w watched the first uh six holes on TV and just to get the lay of the land for both groups I was even doing some running out there I don’t know if you saw me I saw you I started cracking on p with Porter about it I saw you off of uh uh 12 you were just like you were bouncing you were like a gazelle in the toughs like bouncing up and down like running a lawn like on the Prairie well yeah I was trying to catch everything I was trying to see no I with you I you something you can’t do at Augusta no no you were out there uh but we were nice and com you think that’s unprofessional doing that was that unprofessional what you say I mean you get a little Brazen with some of your moves inside the ropes um what do you mean Brazen I just think you wander into places you shouldn’t be sometimes we had a colleague who was who was reticent to give you his inside the ropes pass cuz he thought you would get him in trouble for handing it off to you because guy Andy goes into places he’s not supposed to be you’re just wandering into the middle of the green sometimes no I’m kidding I’m exaggerating but but no you were running I I don’t know I don’t think you should be running around probably inside the ropes but you you were you were subtle about it it wasn’t like it was like it would be like w you say bolt going down the middle of the Fairway you were s it wasn’t nothing crazy but anyways our feet were nice and comfortable cuz we walked 18 holes of midpines in our Echo I had my lt1’s on you had your evrs on my EVR signatures that I had a conversation with EVR about this week so happy that I I got to you know I got to see EVR in thanks uh I know what’s funny is Porter goes are those the evrs yeah when we played with them this morning yeah yeah he was looking at them he are those the EVR nobody’s done more for the EVR signature shoe than I think you but I would propose you check out the lt1’s the eeko has done us uh done us a solid this week they’ve had us posted up we have a fabulous house and we got so many shoes around us got shoes We’re drowning in shoes drowning in shoes here uh but check out us. eolf uh go to the LT1 get the white one with the light blue trim at the bottom that’s my recommend no LT1 got all the newest latest and greatest you’re just having a fun proposing the pushing the evrs I like the evrs I know they got boa here you got boa a lot of options go to us eco.com holf and check out their full lineup they they took care of us this week for us to be down here documenting this uh let’s get to a little bit more Bryson one more thing on Rory all right let’s not get to a little bit more Bryson um sorry live live fans like there’s story a and A1 I’m sorry like of course we we want to talk about the guy with the trophy to in prep for this and and Brenda’s like you got everything ready I’m like well we’re going to talk about Rory we’re going to talk about Bryson and then a bunch of like little footnotes oh a bunch of little notes um last point on Rory um you hear all these golfers talk about why they love golf and so many of them point out is because like I don’t have to depend on on teammates you know MH it like so many people so many golfers say that’s what appealed to them about the game when they were young is that they didn’t have to depend on teammates and you know this is what can make the game so agonizing is that it is all on you you know and I think that’s the crazy part about golf it’s the thing that makes it so intoxicating it m it’s what makes it so addictive it’s why people get hooked it is the essence of the game is that it really comes down to you versus the course and you versus yourself and I think that was what this tournament was you know it came down to really was was trying to to get over the hump and it and it sadly it just didn’t didn’t happen yeah it yeah it when you’re out there and you’re on the ground and it’s just a guy it’s just not just a guy but it’s just one person and like this crushing tension pressure um just floating through the atmosphere and there’s so much commotions too strong a word there’s just so much movement around you whether it’s people inside the ropes outside the ropes and you have to perform with all that just like pressing down on you singularly solo whether it’s standing over a three foot putt standing over a drive that you know you has to go in a certain spot like it’s incredible uh seeing the chip chip shots even the even like the quotee unquote easy ones right listen I was right next to the one on 14 right he’s left to 14 an easy one it was it was an easy one Brandon’s like that’s the easiest one you but you’re just he’s there on an island by himself and there’s still a hundred different ways you feel like you could f it up yeah and it’s just it’s it’s like you said it’s there’s no teammates and you are just there on and there’s other instances whether it’s a free throw or an at bat or something else but there’s so many points in the game nobody else has to do it for 68 or 70 or 69 or 71 shots like that I I think like one of the things like if you if you wanted to like just think about Roy said something last night where or on um so on Saturday night about feeling a little worn down I think it was in his Kira Dixon interview okay where he was like you know my energy levels are a little low yeah um and you know playing three weeks in a row he mentioned that and you just think about the weight the stress that was he incurred throughout the round leading up to what happened down the the stress down the down the stretch like there was like a very very stressful situation on five with the waist like he ended up in the waist extremely stressful situation on SE on seven and eight um high stress on what would it be it would be um 14 between the t-shot and that extremely stressful 15th hole mhm like in in the accumulation this is where like major championship golf comes down to like so often just getting done with a hole get easy like that’s what like what why everybody says like never complain about a tap and Par right right like and it just it it you know I think that that’s like an if he could have just hit one or two more greens preceding 16 I wonder if it would have gone differently I I I just you’re talking about all all the the exhaustion or stress I I think we’re getting I I don’t know we’re getting to a point where there’s like all this history is building upon itself and this is another one that like I just think would think it has to be it makes it exponentially harder the next time you are in this situation we’re talking about this solo person on the stage right because now that that pressure is Amplified based on whatever happened last or based on how long the drought has been and oh I’m so close to all of that going away I have three more holes I I have one more day or I have you know back nine like it it’s not unfair to think about how this is all really building on top of each other and and amplifying the pressure for whenever this happens the next time or he gets close I I mean sorry this is spiraled now but like I I also wonder like I think one of the things like you hear every golfer talk about staying in the present and we’ve talked now about how these guys knew what the other one was doing all day yeah and I wonder if there was a moment on the 16th hole where Rory might have Lo left the present and thought about I’m going to win this because I know in my head I was like Rory is winning this tournament at that point you Andy Johnson’s head as you’re looking as you’re assassinated on 16 green 16 green is this is it’s Rory Rory GNA win 18’s a probable par and 17’s like a pretty probable par yeah and it’s like okay so Bryson’s gonna have to make a birdie on 16 17 or 18 yeah and it’s likely that Rory’s going to have a good look at a birdie yeah and he has a good look on 16 for birdie you know like that so I think like I think there is like something maybe just maybe that could have been what happen well it’s like any like I’ve had this happen to me numerous times in my in my very unsuccessful golf career where moments of Glory I’ve snatched moments of Glory or Victory from or snatched defeat from a victory right whatever by and What’s happen in competition I start to think about winning you know MH and then you lose yep yep I don’t know it’s it’s just it’s I think it’s only going to get harder to win the next one as all this stuff builds up it’s not what Bryson thinks what does Bryson think he ke kept saying it’s gonna make him stronger what when he loses I mean this is what’s going to be the fastc and maybe this is that the end of the end of Rory conversation that we promised to be 10 minutes ago but um you know I think what’s going to be fascinating is what what is he after this like Rory yeah yeah I think that’s a fair I think it’s an interesting question I I personally don’t think it’s going to break him no I think it’s something it’s going to hurt for a long time I think it makes it harder to win the next major I don’t think it breaks him I don’t think it means you’ll never win another major I think it just makes it harder whenever that is at 16 the next 16th green with only an hour you left before it you could end it like I just think it makes it a little harder so uh I don’t think it ends him at all um not ended is Bryson the Shambo 41 US Open no we talked about Bryson a fair amount uh in his post round press conference Crusher fans have probably already turned this off no well Crusher fans you got a good thing coming here I was on the I was on the first T and uh great scene on the first te not like the you know what was it the Rolex or the Goldman Sachs the pen last year at Lac a good scene a mixture of grand stand and obviously people on and his his son people on the on the patio at Pinehurst um there was a loud let’s go Crushers as they like run onto the as he ran out of the tunnle and into the but also as Rory Port is in goes Rory one under through one as like Bryson’s getting set to address his driver it was his drive not a driver but you know an iron off the first T it was an interesting Dynamic cuz it’s it’s not a huge build out there it was just a good good scene uh Bryson started slow we’re not going to go play byplay but it he seemed frustrated seemed almost a little chippy with this caddy misses on four he’s like what are we doing dude misses uh six he’s short drives seven uh doesn’t make a birdie there when he hit driver close yeah a great hit a wedge like right over the flag stick not like super tight this is it uh he frustrated quite honestly at the start Brand’s hollering about how he can’t hit a fade and he he’s not going to win because he can’t hit a fade there’s no versatility there uh but he had a short game going like he was missing greens he seemed off with his irons his driver like this a total Bryson circus his driver was flattening on the Range I guess is what he didn’t cave it flattening is what he said and he didn’t hit enough balls with a new one five he said he had five balls he said he to hit 50 or 60 with it to get it to the spot it needed to be so he goes to the US Open with the three shot lead on the driver change 10 minutes ago and so that the whole Bryson show is starting at this crank and uh he drove it poorly I think he had four Fairways I want to say I I have it somewhere but it wasn’t a lot made a ton of incredible saves uh obviously make a birdie till 10 BL a few shot yes I I would argue his greatest achievement was a par at eight God he hit he just I cannot believe where he got up and down from and that’s not even counting the insane second shot yeah to hit it was an insane second shot to hit it into a terrible place right to hit it to like quote unquote an amazing shot to get jail yeah yeah like I think that like explains like pineur well is you can just like hit amazing shots that end up in terrible places so he smashes his driveway right they’re clearing the crowd there’s a big boy in aces all four aces gear who became like this you know a citizen Marshall citizen appointed Marshall apparently some like live I don’t know relation he’s some live scouter or something but he was like Scout is he I don’t know I saw Ryan French Wasing about him but I was Wonder watching this guy 4 Aces Scout for future he apparently knows all the live guys or like tells I I don’t know he Scouts the course but he’s like pushing people around not pushing literal like figuratively moving him back I was like who’s this guy and an Aces hat and shirt and so Bryson has to hit what he said was a 40 yard he moved it 40 yards cut um he so he hit a to fade there I guess to to to brandle to counter BR he was able to move it left to right um through an 8 foot window and then it’s to jail he gets up and down for the par as as Rory Bird’s nine ahead and that was like I think almost maybe his best achievement of the day was somehow scratching a par out of that people probably point to the 55 y bunker shot too did not drive it well um but he did enough to win the US Open and I think he got play was great all all week I think that was the thing that was super impressive have that in the first five or six holes today I thought you know it’s weird on on four where he missed long I was standing up there I was at the green and it’s like I doubt he felt it but like the wind gusted yeah and I think that’s what happened on four was that that ended up long and and it was just like a little gust up there like he didn’t didn’t feel it it was it was really weird you know it just like one of those things you pick up if you’re up there um cuz I’m you’re hitting from down and hitting up and there was this just random gust of wind yeah um but yeah I I got to say this was one of the most impressive 71s ever because he did not like the where he was driving it to was not good I heard I heard that brandle was just losing his mind about him not being penalized not getting in toughs but like he did he got like penalized on on on 12 he had hit like a squirly one uh 12v just had to come out like kind of sideways essentially to the front of the green let me tell you something we watched it Wingfoot him not get penalized At All by really thick rough mhm and uh and then 18 obviously he got penalized right uh yeah yeah he got he yes he got duy penalized Penal my favorite was 18 he did call in I went and talked to David Rickman who is the RNA Chief rules guy who happened to be the rules officer or rules guy on the spot and he called him in he’s over irony of all ironies you could get Tio from the 18th whole Tower with brandle up in his Tower right above that was what he would have gotten Tio from uh that’s where the kind of the corner he went down in calls over uh Rickman Rickman like looks down looks ahead he goes no and shakes his head like the Danny DeVito GI like No And like no and then like walks back out to the Fairway to his cart I went and talked to Rickman I was like you know did he ask for Relief like was was he asking for Tio relief because he was just asking for a relief of any and all kinds can I have relief and he just there wasn’t there I I don’t know what like burrowing animal bad lie tree BR I don’t know what Rel he just wanted he just asked for relief of any kind and Rick was like I just like there was no relief available it wasn’t wasn’t anything it was pretty good uh pretty good quote um but it was uh it wasn’t a great lie and like you said he he was he was penalized right he he he hit it into a bad spot from there and that may have been his best course of action he made a par you’ve been skeptical all week about H are the fans actually pulling for Bryson are they oh I’m not skeptical are they are they really all behind him no no no your opinion not the take well explain your take and did it change at all to day uh no my take is that he the fans are incredibly behind him but there’s this this like measuring stick of they’re more behind him than anyone else and I just think that’s impossible to judge it’s it was awesome to you know I heard L of today Rory go Patty ice I heard one of those that made me laugh out loud I heard it going up 12 some guy I think some guy did it to be the [ __ ] and be funny as everyone’s yelling Rory and Bryson goes go Patty ice I started laughing my favorite one for Pat was like Pat let’s get the deal done let’s get the de someone said that that’s pretty good pretty good so so you know uh is z Kyler or the the the kid in the wheelchair off of 10 yes Rory G’s ball he just made a birdie great birdie Bryson makes a great birdie he signs his hat someone joked Pat gave him Financial advice as he walked by not his hat not a ball right gave him Financial ADV kley just said like hi just wave gave him a high five like yeah it was just that’s do whatever there’s no judgment I just thought it was a good joke that he gave him Financial advice Apollo he gave him a free retirement account he’s got the athe on the front yeah I’ve I’ve been told by my fiduciary that I’m not supposed to promote a scene there a competitor to you know our great 401K might have some job openings on the fried egg you know had a product we’ve got a 401K with company match it’s not a theme I’ll tell you that but he also has got the midcap financial on the back what is that a competitor is that part of the Apollo I was looking at that curious I was like is he just hitting every kind of uh Financial Service Company what is midcap specialty fin Finance direct lending is it under Apollo of some sort or just a separate deal I think it’s a separate deal meeting opportunity with creative debt Capital to support every need uh Bryson got popped at 11 by the way too with another tough like he I mean he was able to advance the ball forward but got po there he got I thought I you know I thought the out of play areas were awesome 12 was like or 10 he couldn’t get it to the green or close he didn’t entertain it he was getting popped he was getting popped the out of playay areas were incredible because there was like a hold your breath moment every time somebody hit into it and I think that’s like what people want from rough yeah I would like I think like the wire grass was great like I wouldn’t I wouldn’t advocate for Moore because Moore would just be like okay like we can’t hit the ball well let me tell you on Monday there might be less um they’re taking it out but like I thought Bryson’s round was like a perfect example like he had some opportunities and he hit some great shots out of it hit some like awesome shots out of it but he also got jammed by it like multiple times and they led to Bogey’s or awesome up and downs hard pars I mean like we saw just like that I think the thing that was so exciting about the whole tournament was just how hard you had to work for a par if you hit a mediocre shot whether it was off the te or whether it was approaching the green or around the green or if you hit a bad putt yep like there was high stakes there was no let up like you could not take your foot off the gas at all and I think like honestly like one of the most impressive things about Bryson is how he’s able to keep his energy so high like I mean like he’s he’s a showman he’s talked about he giving like doing this like big like celebrations it has to be tiring yeah well it’s it’s a yeah it’s an a it’s a moment of adrenaline rush or high like naturally like you can’t you come down from going to the next tea or whatever it may be my only point about the crowd is like I just don’t think you like they were absolutely loving him and behind him but I walked to this group the other day and they were shouting for Max as much as Bryon they were shouting they weren’t I walked with them early in the tournament you overblow The Crushers love like yeah people love the I don’t know I just think we get caught up with trying to quantify it’s more for somebody and less for they loved Bryson I’ll tell you that they loved Rory today uh and what I love about Brighton is like he’s playing into it could be genuine he said you know it is that’s just how I’m reacting he knows where every grand stand is eight he turns he makes the save he turns to it uh even the bunker shot on 18 before he still got a putt like he’s still got a putt and he’s like he’s you know all fire he knows where he’s to look for the grand stands it where does the 18th bunker shot rank in terms of like the greatest golf shots that we’ve seen recently where would you put it like what would rank up there with it um I mean they talk I mean the one of the hardest shot in golf right is the long bunker shot this was a 55 y I don’t know if I can rank it right away um I think it goes up there with like I like I it Brooks at oakill when he hit that shot on 16 to like yeah a couple inches Reef or oakill oakill okay you want a re like that shot like stands out as one like just thinking about like okay like that one would stand out to me um but I think this one would probably Stand Out above that it’s an alltime yeah it’s an all time in the in the in round four Bryson was 37th out of however many 70 and strokes gained off the te he was 39th and approach 10th in around on the green and 49 I just want to I want to just throw this out there talking to Joseph lman who’s here yeah and I completely agree with this Strokes gained this should be just tossed out the window this week because the the determination of that is based off of PGA Tour our averages and it’s like okay if it goes into the rough yeah different deal it’s it’s way different than here where you could get like I was thinking about this because I bet Bryson’s like Strokes GED approach took a tumble because of the shot he hit on 12 that like squirted out to the left yeah and like dribbled up there or you know like well I think what you’re getting at is that there’s entertainment and then there’s Golf and we’re seeing these products and we’re talking about it in a data perspective right now like we’re seeing these products seem to get farther and farther apart right of of and I you know that could get us into more of a Pinehurst chat but uh what was your favorite Bryson shot of the day is it the bunker the bunker shot I mean the bunker shot was unbelievable that I mean that I was standing there and I was thinking about all the outcomes that could come of that he could have hit it into the into the clubhouse he could have left like he could have left it in the bunker he could have hit it in you know like it could have got missed the green like there were all these outcomes like I was sitting there thinking I was like it’s feasible that Rory could win because he doubles this hole from there yeah it was feasible that and you know I also you also looked at it and it’s like okay like if you had the shot it’s a really good spot for the shot because he had all that green which let him play that chunk and run type bunker shot where you you do the big explosion and you just let it run up the green um I find this unique irony in in Bryson becoming this great US Open Champion great USGA Champion obviously the USGA I think like I think no matter where you sit on the debate of technology I think we probably all can agree that the USGA has has been like at least like administered a a lot of like technological change allowed a lot of technological change and here’s like I find it there’s like this beautiful irony that the guy that’s become this great USGA Champion is the guy that pushes up against the limit as much as he can with his equipment and the way he plays the game of golf yeah he’s he’s always yeah looking I don’t know if the edge or whatever it is but he’s completely like obsessed to the point of of you know manic about driving every little Edge right like it’s it’s impossible to say he doesn’t work hard he doesn’t prepare all the all these things right well there’s a lot of guys who just have talent and some of them were here this week some of them weren’t that that just kind of rely on that and go through the motions and of course he’s like chased the bag right he got the bag did get the bag but there’s a lot of guy like I think his primary motivation not to butter him up is is to win like championships to win consequential events I don’t think he knew what his motivation was three years ago and a lot of guys are just happy to get the bag and I don’t think that’s Bryson um I I just don’t think that’s Bryson he’s he’s a he’s an odd duck dude he’s an he’s still an odd duck I I love that he’s like happy he seems happy he seems there was one time today he like I think it was coming off four he’s just like grinning he’s just like grinning walking from green to tea like almost goofy even after like Bogies uh he seems like happy maybe he’s trying to trick himself into being happy but he seems super happy he had the chocolate milk quote the chocolate milk that got you one goe before we get to the chocolate milk yeah I think one of the things that maybe I him playing up with the crowd in a way like these M we just talked about like the intensity of these yeah Majors distraction or something or taking your mind off the I think it helps him keep a little more loose yeah like I mean I’m not going to lie like the way he played today in in parts of his game the way he drove the ball like that would get hard it would get really hard yeah but I think let go of the Rope yes exactly like you see this happen all the time is like it it reminds me a little bit of like um Franchesco molari in the 2019 Masters where it’s like you’re like what how’s this guy this guy’s hitting it all over the place he’s hitting it terrible and eventually you let go of the Rope like you can’t do it and I wonder like one of the things is like I think that like so many great players you see them and the way they play on Friday and the way they act on Friday is completely different than the way they play an act on Sunday and I think Bryson one of the things is like the fans which you know he doesn’t get a practice in front of fans all the time because a lot of a lot of the events he plays in don’t have a lot of them but he what the fans provide him like the it lets him exit and take that stress out and then come back does that make sense yeah yeah definitely it’s an interesting Theory I don’t mind it um chocolate milk no the fans thing though this was gets to another being still like an odd duck he’s getting his trophy and his you know he’s still Bryson his brain starts going his mouth I want you all to touch it you have to all experience this he’s looking at like a grand St of 88,000 people he’s like we’re all touching this tonight cuz you want you all deserve to experience this I was like how does he plan to execute this how is this going to H someone next to me with like the US was like what the hell is he talking about how is this going to happen nobody seemed to understand so then he like ran into the crowd a little bit later and had I guess he had people touch it but it was just an odd detour of apparently I at one point it’s like is everybody drinking out of this trophy tonight well what is what is he getting at with this and we know that’ll be chocolate milk I um I got to say um I said to like a USGA media person I was like is is he are you guys going to be able to get him back here for the because he’s got to do the press conference oh yeah I was like if every Fan’s touching it I don’t is he coming back or should I go yeah like all the Tik Tock boys I was out there on the the Tik tock house was uh they were all out there on the 18th grade they were having a good old time in their Crushers gear so uh pretty happy with Team Bryson I don’t I we said CH the one thing that cracked me up to put a bow on it was Brentley our colleague in the media center comes up Andy laughed out loud I mean it was hilarious full credit to Claire Rogers for bringing it up the question you had your glass of chocolate milk up there what do you mean you forgot we sold Beaker hats hats with chocolate milk in the beaker it I had legendary cat we to bring those hat back I hadn’t thought about the chocolate milk stuff in two years so this was like our early shotgun start he stayed at a friend’s house when he played corn fairy tour than whatever it was we they said Bryson what do you need he said just more chocolate milk an insatiable appetite for chocolate milk these people who hosted him could not keep chocolate milk in the house he would just be pouring chocolate milk down the gullet not they had to keep going grocery store this was you know it was corroborated by Harry Hicks Harry X was I want to point out I I just want to put our our flag we were the first golf podcast to have Harry EG yeah a long time ago uh he would just have ch anyway so then we kept looking and chocolate milk he WIS winf foot he’s got a glass of chocolate milk Claire asked him you had the chocolate milk will you be having that what will be your celebration just a weird response amusing I guess you laughed out loud at this you’re right off the stage to him oh yeah look I’m not going to get into what could happen tonight smiling chocolate milk will be one thing you just started c i I looked over like three of us three of you are like like doubled over chocolate milk will be one thing there will be a lot of other stuff too what does that mean he’s mature he’s getting into the hard stuff now uh there’s some sand in there so we got to clean it out first though smiling I think he put sand from the 18th old bunker you know what this other stuff I gave my daughter chocolate milk for the first time I was like I I had and I was like it was unbelievable to see a kid experienced chocolate milk for the first time cuz I was like have you ever had chocolate milk and she was like no but that’s Bryon Bryson hasn’t given it up what else did you have to say chocolate milk is great yeah I aside from it being the bad milk that they just put chocolate in to cover the discoloration cuz it can’t sell it cuz it’s white remember that uh the Liv question he seemed he seemed genuine he seemed to be really genuine and contemplative about like I just want us all to be back together I would I’m not going to go to say he regrets what he’s done you think he likes his life uh live his obviously been very successful successful for him I mean and but he seemed to be very like really contemplative about like I just kind of want all of this back he wants all Bryson’s ever wanted is people to like him I think like deep down like he wants people to like him yeah he Revels in in doing what he did today seems to have his teammates too seems that that means a lot to him it seems like like those guys Paul Casey like I think he does like having that too like a team your guy Paul case Paul Casey Bon and uh how stick I mean he wants people to like him and like I I have to this is not a shot at live okay this is a reality like watch the next time he teas it up at live like it it’s just not like how you know you want talk about how hard it’s going to be for Rory to play the next time it’s going to be hard for Bryson to go play the next live event when he just experienced what he experienced and I’m not saying that the Travelers is like this great event but there are fans there like the atmos there is an atmosphere there and there isn’t a like Bryson is a golf nerd and that like he wants golf fans to like him and he wants to perform and he he said in his in his press I’m an Entertainer that’s my job and having you know thousands of people to entertain like he did this week it had to be like he’s going to have a hangover when he goes to live and it’s like wait like there’s nobody here there’s there’s a rumor I don’t think it’s true true they’re saying Rory wded from The Travelers but I don’t know we’ll we’ll address that on Wednesday if that’s true but God the pictures of him and scoring are hard to see apparently the Netflix show was maybe with him um yeah I it’s awful anything else on Bryson I mean I just he figured out Pinehurst we need to give him credit like allegedly like you know Valhalla M better like an incredible and he didn’t hit it well great today I think like this is the reason that venues matter is because this is a different type of venue and and it and it was listen like I think the two best drivers of the golf ball in the world finished one two mhm they are so good off the tea it’s like silly how good they are and sure enough those are the two guys that ended up with the best chance to win and like everybody likes to talk about like I I find it humorous that Brand’s saying that’re like people are suggesting there needs to be more wire grass and there like there wasn’t a penalty for missing and it’s like literally the two best drivers in the world finished one two you know yeah yeah two two great players and yeah I he figured it out and I think like the high trajectory whether it’s a draw or fade was a big thing like high trajectory into those greens like was a big deal um I um I think like listen like he’s becoming a extraordinarily complete player what I think he’s having his best year ever in Majors obviously the open’s a whole another Beast I think he’s got to be top four favorite yeah yeah if I said three and a half Majors for Bryson where are you going I I think I’m going over wow he’s at two so you need to win two more I just don’t think like I don’t think the fire is going to burn out and I honestly don’t know if if we’ve seen the best Bryson that’s that’s there’s that famous quote in the lavner profile like he’s either going to be a Hall of Famer he’s going to end up in a straight jacket in a few years and it feels like he’s already done both right and I just think he’s someone who seems to like be driven by a little bit more than um I don’t know money or just he seems driven by YouTube Fame right now too but I just it does he’s always going to have the power right he’s going to be constantly like you said pushing the envelope whether it’s equipment or training or body or whatever it is I think that’s just going to be part of his package forever or you know forever in his prime and yeah I I guess I’m probably being a prisoner of the moment here and the Prisoner of his season that he’s had at Majors but uh it feels like someone whose game is starting to be able to go everywhere and and that’s part of pro golf rewarding distance in you know in multiple ways and multiple venues but it does feel like he’s someone who’s going to be driven to for years right and not get complacent and and is starting to be more complete at all types of places I think also like he’s had you know like these golfers go through different era like different Evolutions like he’s had he kind of hit bottom he talked about that yeah like he’s had the like I feel like so many golfers go through this like 2-year period And if you catch the two-year period at the wrong time it could just be your career’s over um or you’re never the same and for Bryson I think he went from being really good to you know am I a pro golfer and now he’s come back like what makes me happy is being a pro golfer are you going over um three and a half I think um I don’t know that I’ll win a masters that seems hard but he’s certainly competitive already I he played really well there this year I think if I think I think if that Masters was softer like he played well the softest day got windy got yeah if that like and we’ve seen the Masters be soft a lot a lot um listen like I the PGA are always pga’s PGA Quil Hollow is going to be great for him MH um you know should he should he be on the Olympics team today this week uh this year yeah yeah in theory of course but that’s just not the way the the yeah yes he should be but I mean like I imagine that’s probably something that would mean something to him too I mean could you imagine Bryson in the Olympic Village just handing out protein chocolate milk to everybody well remember he used to study the gymnast was it the gymnast that study oh that was like when he was in his buling phas right the different kind of strength like he’s doing the re in the parallel bars and whatever else um yeah a big win for Bryson congrats to him uh honestly it’s cool to see him very happy uh it goes to a lineage I think of the pain Stewart who did not play as well as Phil Michelson on the Sunday he won like did not TI green he puted the lights out but it’s similar in a way a great a Great Golf Course Bryson won it I’m not a great Golf Course should allow you the chance to recover with great shots and I think that’s like maybe the biggest Mark for Pinehurst is that yeah it’s extraordinarily hard but if you hit great shots you can recover yeah um odds and ends do you want to talk more any more about Pinehurst at all it feels like we’ve hit on the at a fair amount as a venue I love it not we’re going to talk a bunch on fried egg pot on Tuesday um we’re going to probably do a lot on Pinehurst a little bit less on on compe on the on the competition we could talk more if you want to talk more we’re at we’re at our 15 I just think for our spin I I talked to someone who’s I don’t know I don’t want to flu very high up at the USGA like very high up and I wasn’t just buttering this is how I felt like this felt like pretty strong affirmation for the anchor site deal does that mean I still like that I love it or there might be some on Wei that sets in eventually I think the problem is that there’s two of them and 40% of the every works yeah this this one works you know what which one doesn’t work as well Pebble Pebble yeah this one seemed to work I also again might be prisoner of the moment but it feels like of course uh that can continually regardless of distance also next time we’re here rolled back ball rolled back ball it should even be even better should shouldn’t be able to hit nine iron into 16 yeah yeah it was hopefully who knows what driver brys will be playing didn’t even a wedge I think he had a wedge today Bryson yeah I think he had a wedge on a 500 whatever it is 40 yards something what was it 540 535 we can just keep building back te’s you know we don’t keep calling and Bryce is wedge The Loft as you know the Loft I yes wedge is a wedge and nameer Zander hit nine iron the other day so you know like uh I I would hate it if they had to keep extending because I will never forget today and sort of the intimacy of being able to feel what was going on from ho Toole if they would have gone a little further golf could be more intimate God even more so than the Masters I would say for whatever reason it’s because there are more people and there’s less trees the Masters could be more this is why I I think I say this every Master’s recap pod they could get rid of some of those [ __ ] ornamentals ornamentals sure sure it would feel the same way yeah but they have all this junk this clutter that’s in between the holes that like it removes some of the energy which is crazy because the whole place and it it’s it’s it’s an electric place but that place could be even better but that was the thing about Pinehurst is like the openness between the holes allowed for so there was such great energy out there yeah so anyways it felt like affirmation for the for this being a more frequent site I don’t know about the anchor system but more frequent feels like a great mix Joseph I don’t want to take lman I think L mana’s take was that was a great golf crowd because you kind of had to work a little bit to get here uh is that fair Joseph that like it it’s it’s similar to I don’t know like it felt a little bit more like a golf nerd crowd at Augusta or golf nerd crowd in Scotland uh because you know it’s not every Joe Blow rolling out of bed in a metro area and Saturday I’m going to go get hammered with some buddies and because it’s you know 40 minutes away or a train ride away and you know that’s not to say that element didn’t exist but it felt like a great crowd I don’t know if the walk backs just work just the venue really worked for me this week and I I don’t know if I came in a little bit skeptical or bored or whatever I I it just really the course is fabulous as it is but but the whole thing worked awesome for me um what else you want to do any other odds and ends oh I got I gotta say I I this this p i i i have a great great deal of respect more respect today for Patrick Klay as a golfer than I’ve had at any I I’ve I’ve always admired Patrick kentley’s golf game like especially early like I I was someone that was very early on his return to golf mhm um but today I I thought he was super impressive like honestly he had a great chance to win it became this mono Amo thing about whole 10 or so and he like he could have stole it he had a really good look on 15 for birdie he missed a shorty on 16 and like he was there he could he probably didn’t have the foresight that Rory would be dropping shots he miss shorty on 17 or he just just rolled over it just it was like it looked like a great shot yeah but like God he he played really well I thought he acquitted himself well he didn’t make putts today he was also lost coming out of the gate too like he didn’t know where the ball he almost hit it out of play on an iron off the tea at three yeah you know four he was bad like they broadcast like he’s he’s totally he’s a mess he’s totally out of sorts he goes am I out of play Joe on three like but he figured it out as the round proceeded on and hard conditions to try and figure out he grinded and that was by far his best major championship and like you’re people are always going to remember this is Rory Bryson uh duel but like that guy could have won today yep without a doubt could have won today yep uh and I guarantee like I think like people I think he got caught up in what Rory did that deflated Pat kley okay you mean like the birdie run there between like 10 to 14 yeah and on 16 he missed a shorty before missed his shorty ah okay it was almost like you know he like literally let go the Rope on 16 and at that time he was like four back okay but he was or three back and then yeah came back a little bit more but it’s you know he was right there cuz he missed that put on 15 was a was a killer missing 15 and 16 like those two go in he’s he’s there he’s tied for the lead it was crazy he played really great um another Hot Topic tonight should Rory have talked to the media uh he’s getting a lot of stick for I was I was full in bed fully embedded with Bryson I say with Bryson for the entire duration and the Tik Tock boys and the whole scene um I didn’t and then I had fellow colleagues in the media say he like blew out of the parking lot almost hit a cart was you know Wheeling out and screeching out I don’t know that the video shows that I thought it would I thought it would be unlikely that he would talk to the Press given the way it ended I didn’t know I almost went back to see but I stay with Bryson um he’s getting a lot of stick I know tron’s like on him on Twitter and you know I don’t know that that’s you know completely unjustifiable opinion out of left field I think I’m okay with it um as someone in the media this is someone who’s yelled about this a lot yeah I think Roy’s done a few times that I thought was [ __ ] I think you should have to talk or he should if he wants to be like the face and the leader and and benefit from media coverage in a lot of ways I just like whether that was Bryson that happened to or or Rory or Klay I bet can’t we’d probably give some [ __ ] too but honestly like I would understand it midcap Financial wouldn’t do that I would understand it I I kind of understand it um I just do and that’s not having a soft spot for Rory I don’t think because because I would understand it from Bryson if he blew out of there after missing two short putts uh I just I’m not I I don’t know maybe I’m excusing him I I understand it I guess do you think he should have had to talk to the Press some people say he should have shook Bryson’s hand and all this stuff I don’t I couldn’t I couldn’t have imagined mind is in a blender I couldn’t have imagined if it couldn’t imagine talking in that situation yeah yeah um that being said like I think it’s like for people that are comparing the the price where Bryson birded 18 right didn’t he birdie 18 part 18 today no at Valhalla oh um I think birdi and then Xander birdied yeah I Rory talked and he he about today I was like what he he talked and he shook windom’s hand when he was in effectively that exact situation the year before yeah right yep this was is I don’t know we haven’t seen something like that in a while you know um I think like you know it a a situation you could probably compare it to is uh Meo Pereira he talked shortly different deal yeah but um I just I don’t know I’m I’m not going there to crucify him for that right now I was waiting to listen to him talk I didn’t really have any question questions I didn’t really want to ask many questions it was like one of those situations where I didn’t want to ask a question but I wanted to listen yeah you know I um I think like it’s hard because of some of his comments about like entertainment Pro I get both sides of it I just think there’s like a human side of of understanding yourself and you know if you if you caught everybody that Len is listening everybody has probably been somewhere in their life where they just don’t want to talk to anybody he did talk after St Andrews talked after LACC I I don’t know I guess I’m all right with it um I’m not I I can understand if anyone in that situation and I don’t think it’s just Rory that I would understand it um other odds and ends from the day any other amusements uh my favorite part not favorite amusing the day started great on Ken t was in media dining and I can’t lay out I looked at my watch I like tap it like let’s get him going let’s let’s let’s let’s get let’s move through it Ken tacket I don’t know why he was immediate dying odds and ends what other notes do you have oh you had something about that the pace of play didn’t you yeah yeah a little Scuttle butt here yeah little Scuttle butt pace of play at at the US Open everybody yelling at the usj they need to start stroking guys you know they got they got to administer shots for pace of play you know who who who runs the pace of play penalties at at the US Open who the PGA Tour PGA Tour officials wow wow so that’s why nothing’s happening you’ll know you’ll see some clocking some warnings but nothing else right some light slaps on the wrist some Stern words but they’re not actually taking away your uh your allowance yeah not taking you know making you do chores just some Stern words I’m all I know plenty about empty threats as a parent but that’s what they are God empty threats as a parents the worst well because they just they look you in the eyes and they’re like I know I remember the last time you did this and I still have my video games the worst the worst is when you make threats yeah that you don’t want to make yeah and then it you know it’s like you know something like no TV when I make dinner yeah and it’s like well I’m probably going to cave on this no screens well I also need to keep saying or get work done or do something like yeah it’s terrible Happy Father’s Day um Scotty Sheffer is is Pinehurst the sky Sheffer stopper definitely in definitely interesting um frustrating week for Scotty seemed upset about some of the greens or you know maybe just his putting seemed upset about the whole natives era native areas um I don’t know that seems like a question you wanted to answer you were posing so you would ask it um I don’t I think there’s there’s something about irregularity I don’t listen I’m not like a I’m not a super religious person um but I do think there’s something about Scotty like you hear him talk about um how you know it’s it’s God’s plan and and um you know I’m just like living out God’s plan yeah um a lot and I think there is like probably something about where my ball goes and I don’t know what’s going to happen to it like the ball on the ground rolling away um might present uh you know uh uncertainty yeah right like I I don’t know that’s he he did not have uh a Scotty shuffler week when everybody expected him to right they thought it’ be tailor made for him and all set up for him um other odds and ends Hur more sort of troubling I don’t know if I talked to you about this more troubling Jo Mayo stuff it’s apparently like sending mildly threatening texts to other coaches too like after him just about like you don’t know what you’re talking about are you questioning me like apparently he’s very abrasive confrontational on text so we got him apparently doing that with other coaches texting menacingly a little bit in like a a big brother kind of way or threatening way got a tech threat you know approaching journalists who were skeptical of aimo got just tough week for the monk over here monk got in our Crosshair I got to I gotta say I uh a great heartwarming moment I got I got my name called I turned around and the person person on the other end said how did you like that all Illinois pairing yeah found found you know had a conversation about pairings and how they got some who might have an influence on the pairings or someone who would know how they’re made how how they got made you know I offered I offered my assistance at the end of the call at the end of the conversation and it was met with with a rigid no no get lost we can talk orig orig and maybe I should never have said anything to you um what else the Grain Train on the broadcast was like I just don’t think people understand it I think it’s hard to tell there’re just the grain dark green that’s light green not non-stop Grain Train people are asking for broadcast takes we didn’t watch the broadcast we listened a little bit walking around uh it seemed like people were frustrated at times as they almost always are Saturday seemed like a lot of commercials just I was streaming I I was like the way I was handling it it was a lot of pausing and then fast forward i’ like pause when I watch yeah and then when you know I’m walking i’ I’d kind of shuffle through it y um yeah was it it seemed like a lot of commercials y it I think like the thing that you miss so much and this is what I’m reminded of when we cover these like especially these super intense ones and I don’t know what the solution is and I think that like B having been to like super high intensity basketball NBA playoff games um versus TV like you still get the intensity through the TV it might not be the same right but it’s you feel it and I think like golf you feel the intensity through the SC through the TV but you’re just missing something and I just and I don’t know what the solution is this is the the huge problem but like how you know when when basketball is a timeout everybody goes like golf’s problem is the continuous nature of it and you have to fit commercials in somewhere but like the problem is that you miss the build of of the tension and you know like they cut away from shots and you like they’re trying to show as many shots in a commercial window and when they cut away they lose like the aftermath and like a lot of that stuff and the the reactions 20 seconds after a shot’s hit or while they’re walking up to a green you miss when you’re watching a broadcast and those are so many times like the things that I remember the most from golf tournament I will yeah I will cop to being I I think sometimes watching on TV is a better way to understand what’s happened in a tournament I will like I’m not trying to say like oh I had access today and you didn’t listen her on the other end I’m just telling you this one was very different on the ground it was very intimate that I don’t think the broadcast could have picked up all the way to the end I mean Bryson’s right there puttering around in the sand as Rory misses it it happened on 70 I I I’ll never forget that Dynamic all the way through the back nine that I just don’t think you can pick up like you said other odds and ends uh is is pavon a top five player in the world no is he in the top five of the FedEx Cup now again don’t that’s not that’s not a request to look up the standings please don’t oh you put your microphone down you’re going to look up your FedEx Cup stand they’re probably not updated you’re about to holler about the website see where if Rory closed the Gap here on sheffler it probably it’s got to be updated our Wi-Fi is not great cing out um oh he uh uh where’s pavon what’ he get in this one is he solo what was he solo third or something like that P pavon is uh he’s fifth oh he’s 11th he’s just outside the Comcast business to or top 10 hey you know some mild credit the Matthew pavant he in there he birdied 15 for God’s sakes nobody did that Victor Perez followed him inside the ropes I think at least last 10 12 holes I saw him for the first time on seven he Thomas L were like just cheering him on and so he did not bomb out he didn’t he was a part of the proceedings he was on the broadcast he still that birdied you know all the way to 15 he was a part of it all right here this is projected it’s projected that Rory gets 400 points not the 750 do you think he should file a a a waiver with the league office like when the when the when the Pacers file a 72 complaints yeah I want my full points I want my 750 if he I think that’s his priority right now is management team should get on it request their points he got a big ballf frog ballf frog announcement coming up too I wonder if that’s going to get push back Becky finished sixth yeah I don’t know what’s getting pushed back yeah there’s all sorts of maybe the deal or some you know improved piff deals announced Tuesday allegedly who knows what’s coming other odds and ends from the day from the ground are we good I think we’re good we always have clean up this is the longest episode we’ve had in a while well honest to God it was I would have gone through my notes whole BYO if we really needed to it was really Unforgettable um I think there’s more High picture conversation should we mention Tony fow’s name he finished like you know small margins again and obviously yesterday yeah 13 He makes a triple he finishes two out like this is the thing that I always like he hit it so good I know I sound like a broken record but it’s like every major it’s like oh my God it comes down to like one or two moments yeah it’s crazy it’s like he spun his wedge off the front puted it through the green and that’s it it was like a 10minute sort of brain short circuit hit the ball incredible hit it so good yesterday yeah and he’s too short of a playoff it’s just the way the cookie crumbles non-competitive Wikipedia top 10 I would sayi matama Falls in that bucket Russell Henley Xander Schley Xander is the king Sam win Davis Thompson and Cory Connor congratulations Davis Thompson one of the last guys in the field I feel like good for him but congratulations on your for Davis Thompson congratulations on your first first yellow yellow insignificant yellow top 10 yeah congrats to him uh all right that does it I think for the E heartbreak for Sergio the guy that you you romanticized about I I just appreciated the work he put in ludvig tough 7373 bombs out of the top 10 aftering the 36 hole lead by yeah of course I’m not saying it’s a failure in any way tough tough weekend for for my align I guy too Thomas in the second to last group yesterday Thomas D Tree um I think that does it for uh the echo house good walks in and out all the week subscribe to good walk coffee we got bunch of giveaways we still got to give out um it’s been an awesome week probably our last men’s major for this year I think I don’t think we’re doing TR our last Road Show for a little bit until uh the peac cup until what the peac cup pres cup the PE from the PE boy to the PE cup that’s where we’re headed next what about uh what about putter boy he survived the week are you surprised uh I don’t know I think we started a movement there was a lot of anti- PE boy thoughts out there I feel like people trying to dig into his past he’s you know and he got see how any depraved sort of you know skeletons uh the best PE boy I saw P boy rendition cuz they got him all over everything was someone shared he’s on the pool and he’s in this like little like you know 1950s swimsuit with like the wrestler Tru it’s like a wrestler like you know the high school wrestler he’s got it’s just PE boy in that outfit I was like God this guy get butter boy the hell out of here but anyways great week thanks to EO good walk we will be back with you on [Music] Wednesday I

  1. The fall started with the brain fart of taking 7-iron instead of 8 and air mailing the green on 15. Where was Harry Diamond on that decision? A top-end caddie would have thrown himself on the ball to keep McIlroy from hitting 7-iron there.

And FWIW, DeChambeau was hitting a 9-iron on 15. HIs wood lofts are really strong, but I think his short iron lofts are pretty standard. So, DeChambeau would have had more spin on his shot.
