[Music] hello and welcome to Mana lapen New Jersey for the 2024 New Jersey state championships presented by Inova and of course thank you for tuning in to Heiser media to watch this coverage I’m Nathan Johnson joined today in the booth by Dan Brooks Wells how’s it going Dan doing really good today man we got a good day here in the80s and uh we should be looking at some good golf man yeah good golf on a good card we got Chris Villa leading the way at 15 under par followed closely behind by Michael Johansson at 14 under Curtis Taves and Vinnie montinari looking to make a push here in this final round plenty of other folks rounding out our top 10 on this tough course a lot of Anything Can [Music] Happen yeah watching these you know watch watching this course it is so very tight and this first hole you’re not going to see it as much this is a par three 404 ft dog leg to the right so you can see it’s an open Fairway but it gets really really guarded once you get into the pen yeah Chris leading things off trying to throw a turnover backand Just Clips that limb right there about halfway through the flight and so I don’t know about you but I’m so excited to watch Michael Joe I’ve been watching him for years and when I was coming up in uh you know 20156 this guy was on a lot of film so I’m really excited to see him play he just usually plays so well down in North Carolina in the woods so he should feel right at home here yeah looking forward to it MJ always a pleasure to watch on coverage Curtis Taves going with the forehand here first one we’ve seen on this hole definitely shapes well for it saws it a bit off becoming a staple in the eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey area as well as this guy Vinnie montinari the Lefty looking to make a final round push here as well yeah and Vinnie I’ve seen Vinnie out in Pittsburgh making his way over here and that’s the best Drive of the group yeah pretty much picture perfect with that little smooth Lefty backhand heer flip going to give himself a birdie putt the rest of these guys trying to scramble and save their pars Chris Villa is going to have a tough time doing that comes up short in circle too but if you’ve seen Chris on coverage before he is running everything inside of 200 feet so I would never count him out on a hole we’ll see if he can give us some highlights today MJ with a little flick roller there yeah interesting I wonder how often he pulls that out Curtis catching an early Tree on his upshot it seems like that’s a common theme here if you do not get inside Circle 2 you probably have a really tough tight Gap into the pen but almost makes that giving it a bid yeah had the height just a little left par save attempt here for Villa as well and Villa loves that he loves that like Hiser dropping right to left shot almost like like a basketball style and I’ve seen him you know just cash so many of those yeah it’s it’s almost more surprising to see chrisv Miss a putt inside of 45 ft than it is to make it because the guy is just automatic speaking of automatic you don’t see Michael Joe miss too many putts either no I just don’t expect it ever so that’s that’s a that’s a nice par save for him going to that flick roller going to pick up a stroke on Chris here early and uh I think we’re going to see ourselves a tie at the top oh not even a tie I uh is that a commentator Jinx stand I I’m starting off hot if it is maybe I don’t know you know he wants that one back of course um a lot of golf left to play so you just kind of got to forget about it yeah that birdie from Vinnie is the one of two on the day Austin Freer picking up the other one so uh that’s picking up Strokes on the entire field and here we go moving to Ho two this is a par for 511 ft you’ll notice a landing Zone kind of right here and then you can pick your way around that bigger tree into this green so this is going to be position golf this is not a crush at 400 ft you know you’re going to see a lot of Putters and mid-ranges thrown off the tea yeah I love a twoot par 4 like this where placement is key can’t really bite off too much here although that does look like more of a fairway driver it might be or it might be his buzz might just be a comet yeah it’s Comet yeah when in doubt it’s probably always MJ’s made a lot of money throwing those comets lucky get lucky let’s go early release from Curtis but gets through Curtis always having a good time out there yes he is a very energetic player yeah and this hole suits Villa’s game perfectly he does a little Heiser flip up Flex Shot it’s what I’ve seen him do a thousand times and you’ll notice they just have a nice right to left moving shot into the pin once you’re into the landing Zone Vinnie unfortunately hits these one of the three Guardian trees and he still has a putt but not what you want to do yeah at this level this is a a must get birdie for these guys if if you’re staying in the Fairway you’re going to get a l played as the the second easiest hole on the course so got to find your find a way to get yourself a look here as Chris kind of makes that same same mistake going to find himself out in circle to as well Curtis able to keep it inside of those trees and he’ll have himself a drop in this is kind of that run it that r that little run it throw from Villa and those drop every now and again yeah so good at that just little nose up kind of spinner y couple tapin birdies coming up couple tap in pars as well well this is not a tap in but good comebacker if you’re going to run them like that you got to make those comebackers right yep those 20 Footers especially in a final round like this when you’re in a tight battle like these two guys are at the top those are the puts that can and if if you let a couple of them leak Away really uh wreck your confidence and make things a lot harder down the stretch and here we are at hole three this is a par 3 245 ft tight off the te and dog legs to the left so I would see overstable if you’re backand right hand overstable putter Fairway mid-range kind of whatever you want just make sure it gets over there nice overstable mid-range there for MJ Just Hits it nice and flat trust the stability of that disc at the end of the flight to drift it to the left and you’ll see this is probably a common miss here just going a little deep you know being only 245 these guys aren’t necessarily used to that short of a hole um so yeah just getting something to dump in this is a tricky Lefty hole then you’re going to have to go with a little turnover Putter and just pulls it just a bit this is looking nice for Chris should be get that little bit of ground play and a nice little roll to keep him close yeah perfect I liked how he he threw something overstable just flat and let the disc do its thing he wasn’t trying to like he or flip push it Vinnie kind of giving that a run yeah yeah good effort I was going to say it’s you notice the similarities in Michael and and Chris’s lines throwing that flat to finish shot whereas Curtis going Hiser the whole way the disc isn’t going to dump as much at the end of the flight which is why oh that’s just a lot of chains for Vinnie doesn’t stick um but that pushing Hiser is going to go a lot straighter than the overstable disc that dumps at the end of the flight so those kind of little subtleties and dis selection throughout the round can make a big difference on a course like this as uh MJ conects there for the birdie an MJ two for three definitely want to start to get some of these early birdies heading into some harder holes here unfortunately dropping in a bogy for Vinnie he will move back to even so we are headed to Hole four this is a par 4 580 ft get it down this alley Landing Zone somewhere in here then you got to throw another tight shot into this once again guarded green so stay in the Fairway otherwise you’re basically in jail yeah this is one of those holes got to decide how much you want to try to bite off off the te I mean that’s just absolutely ped from Johansson just striped it on a line looking very similar shot for Villa wow wow as you see him just fly by MJS gets a little skip has a little you know that those trees are just right in his way it’s kind of hard to get away from them but CT is trying to do something similar here wow that thing had a lot of speed on it even when it hit that tree would have been great to see the full flight to that one yeah I think I think he might be going to you know getting to a spot where you can just jump put it up to the basket maybe or have like 100 you know 30 foot look in Vinnie he pulls it a bit to the left and gets caught up yeah and this is what you know this is what everyone’s going to have to go through if you’re off the Fairway oh my gosh this is aggressive patent pending on a knee roller and bites off a good amount kind of finishes off the Fairway so we’ll see what kind of lie he has there but that was a really incredible scramble to get himself back in position good little pushing Heiser from MJ gets a nice Skip and he’ll give himself a look at the bird Curtis with a chop forehand bites off a good chunk of what he had left yeah we’ll have like a long a long jump put in we’ll see if he chooses to give that a look or a bid or not that one’s a bit off to the side so when you’re throwing these holes do you prefer to throw like a putter hard or do you prefer to throw a mid easy to you know bite off that 250 to 300 yeah I’m I’m a I’m a smooth mid-range kind of guy preferably um especially holes like this when you know the fair staying in the Fairway is obviously always the most important thing we see Curtis with a long effort here wow but just a bit off um and I think a lot of these guys seem seem to agree you know kind of going that Fairway driver speed off the off the te just trying to bite off 300 to 350 ft and just keep themselves in position rather than try to get too aggressive yeah and MJ throws his hands up in celebration maybe I would be well done uh that’s a turkey for him yeah what a start just what he needed entering this round down by a stroke and going to find himself up by three after that par from Chris yeah and Chris you know I know it’s early but he’s probably already starting to feel like oh MJ he’s starting to already pull away uh and you know we’re moving on to Hole five par 4 484 ft kind of snakes through the woods here got to throw a Hiser from the right hand backhand perspective into this pin so nothing different in the terms of got to hit that initial Gap and hit a landing Zone such a smooth shot there from MJ is that is that the famous purple Banger I think it might it might be just such a nice flight able to put that disc on a little baby Hiser and just trust it to just slowly drift over to the right much like what Villa is doing here these guys even though obviously their form is very different their style of game is so similar with those just like Smooth heer flips in the woods hitting every single Gap with ease and that’s why you can see they’ve been at the top of the game for you know 15 plus years now right Curtis catches one little too straight and it kicks him left and you notice here Vinnie the Lefty is choosing the forehand and he does it beautifully that’s an origin an understable mid-range just so touchy wow but it pays off yeah seems like we might be seeing a lot of these types of shots these forehand rollers to just push up the Fairway yeah such a a drastic angle here to the left that if you’re not in the landing Zone off the te it’s just such a not much more you can do then just try to get to that corner and go from there here’s where Vinnie is he’s rewarded with less of a you know not as steep all the highs are over yeah still has to go high but gets through the branches and finds himself all the way inside the circle wow look how guarded this is Villa threads the needle either way maybe trying to give that a bit of a a bid but still a very a very good up and down whoa what a putt we we we did miss his shot Curtis plays a little fast sometimes but he does bang that one for a par save yeah big par save there after hitting early off the T Michael Joe makes it four in a row there knocking down that birdie wow just on a streak keep in mind he he shot the hot round on this course in round one it was 4 underpar he’s already there he’s got it oh man granted the course does get harder you know as as we go along but uh still very impressive yeah four through five and not to over Shadow Vinnie there’s a good birdie by him a little bit of a bounce back that’s a really common spot because of that see all the GS clear out Villa will tap in his par and here we are at hole six this is a par five 874 ft tunnel up this little Gap Landing Zone somewhere right here another tunnel back down to the right see if you can land yourself in the Fairway Landing zone right about here and then pick which side you want to go left or right of those Center cutting trees and we will get to this guarded basket here so how much do you want to try and chew off on the first shot that’s the question not too much for MJ just nice smooth Heiser around the corner a little left maybe so we’ll see kind of what he ends up doing from there those are the the big decisions you have to make on this course when you’re not necessarily in the rough pitching out but just on the edge of the Fairway maybe with like a tricky step out forehand or something and yeah we’ll see what he goes [Applause] with these shots usually play to villas strengths come on that filtered that filtered out of the woods a little bit not not too bad yeah I was a bit worried that when that flipped all the way up I don’t think he wanted it to stand up that much this was looking great from from Curtis but just catches that backside it was and you know what now that we’re we’re really looking at this it looks like this ceiling is really low pretty much most of the way too just adds a degree of uh challenge to it yeah might might have been part of the contributing factor to Curtis’s decision there to go with the flick roller again yeah these these angles are just so drastic you can see Chris just going with the turnover but just gets to the backside so quick and now Vinnie uh oh here we go where’d he go oh fantastic what a shot that was awesome that that’s a decision that can just absolutely instantly cause you to take a double Bogi on a hole trying to do something like that right but um it puts him in a great spot it pays off MJ able to flex one down the hill gets a little skip that looks really nice here’s Villa’s third shot’s go oh my goodness just so good from a stand I don’t know if he could have done that much better yeah yeah the just subtle flip up to late Drifter such a demanding shot Vinnie’s trying to go big trying to still find a way to get himself a birdie and doesn’t quite get the ground play I think he was looking for at the end there but should still have a very straightforward par after a less than ideal Drive yeah and Curtis also able to give it a little bit of height anytime maybe a little less but anytime you make the camera you know the catch cam turn you might be doing something right not quite sure where that one got to he’ll probably be able to work out and up and down from there yeah all these guys kind of scrambling the last 50 ft or so on this hole that was a nice up shot from Villa that’ll give him a short and I want people to go if if if you care about form I want you to go back and look at how much Hiser he put on that disc and how far he was leaning over that was really cool to watch at least for me but Curtis gets a nice skip into the basket just pulled a little bit but that’ll be just fine for Johansson and if my math is correct we should have a series of par putts coming up I think so but I could definitely see why this hole is so challenging yeah I mean it did score okay we must have missed a shot from Curtis but it did score as the hardest hole on the course no birdies on the day and a 6.34 average so um yeah arguably a part six not I mean not only were there no birdies but there were only seven pars that’s it I mean ridiculous and we got to see three of them wow whole seven par three 308 ft it only gets easier from here up this Gap dog leg to the [Music] right a rare Michael Johansson forehand coming up let’s go come on let’s see [Music] it oh it didn’t look bad no he he has a solid a solid forehand he breaks it out from time to time I I think Michael Joe will throw forehands more often than Chris Villa if we see a Chris forand yeah that would be a unicorn something special not this T he’s got to be in some serious trouble seems like that’s where yeah people are collecting too right about there yeah it’s a it’s a tough shapee to make with the backand because you really have to push so far straight before dumping to the right and that was looking so nice from Curtis as well catches that last tree still probably inside the circle I think so um yeah it’s it’s it’s a very difficult shape to make for a backhand so these guys kind of all ending up right around that corner there’s a good up by Villa Michael Joe doing the same thing that little backhand turnover there’s a birdie putt for Vinnie nice outside look oh catches a did we even see the limit hit yeah it didn’t look like it hit that tree it looked like it hit something that was sticking out of it but I don’t know maybe just a little bit deceptive the great birdie from from Taves knocking it down Edge you love to see he’s awesome I love playing with Curtis he’s just a good energy couple of par putts coming up for the rest of the card and we can still see here that Michael Joe still has a fourstroke lead on Villa there’s time but we got to start moving if we want to have a chance we can start here on hole eight par three 297 ft you can choose the left or the right Gap here and get to this green yeah I think most of these players going to opt for that right side just throw something straight through it with a little bit of finish at the end little too straight out of Curtis kind of finds the backside right side rough but he might be able to make something work from in there yeah this is another one where you got to choose am I going to throw like a Hiser and let the disc flip up and then ride right or am I going to throw something overstable flat and let the disc just finish on its own yeah I think the ideal shot is just some sort of stable mid-range this pulled just go forward we might have to see another creative shot coming up from Vinnie but yeah as I was saying a nice stable mid-range that you can just trust on flat or a baby tiny bit of Hiser to push straight and then finish at the end I think is probably the ideal dis selection is that what this is oh just barely catches one at the end yeah he’s in that he’s in that zone where it’s you know Villa run zone so we’ll see what he can do from there Vinnie with another patent pending roller does a good job definitely got him got himself a look Get Up by MJ yeah you know Chris is running this one yes no no oh come on how does this not go in it’s a perfect putt it’s low middle it’s low left that’s the word I that I’m not kidding that might be the worst I’ve ever seen oh my God if it didn’t have chains it would have went in like the chain brought it back out what I mean not to that’s a great putt from Vinnie yeah good putt Vinnie but I don’t even know what just happened oh my gosh oh yeah as if Chris’s day you know obviously not the start he wanted one over through now going to be eight holes but as if his day couldn’t get any worse yikes yeah boy all right okay we got we got to move past I know we got to move on yeah just like Chris does but oh man we feel you Chris we feel you I’m sure everyone out there does yeah let us know in the comments have you ever seen a worst spit out than that cuz I am hard pressed to find a worse one well I guess we’re just going to have to go to Whole Nine part three 288 ft you got to work through this Fairway some way kind of like an S shape for the right hand back hand yeah a lot of trees to miss kind of a bit of a Pok and prey towards the end of the flight oh oh Curtis almost a little bankshot Ace there yeah that was that was probably a lot closer than we thought it was it seems like he was going past it like pretty high but that was a good tree MJ probably with a banger I would assume just I mean perfect right I don’t think you can draw it up much better than that Vinnie flips it up probably a little too early oh I saw a bunny Vinnie flips it up a little early do you get bonus points is that is there like a a commentary bingo card if yeah nature nature sighting Nice Shot there from Villa these are going to be some other than obviously AR you playing yeah you better be playing along at home everybody but um these are not going to be easy 25f Footers there a lot of a lot of skinny trees around this green so you know that putt going to have to be a most likely a straddle yeah this would be a good putting green to play uh play Horse Around or putt around if you will Curtis leaving that one just a little bit low yep straddle here for monari probably 27 footer or so just a bit low as well also a little though I I I don’t know about you I find when I have to straddle out like more than my comfort zone I have to aim higher um there’s a good putt by Villa yeah good bounce back I uh yeah I yeah you’re not getting the same power from the legs right so definitely have to compensate with either a little more spin or a little more little something else nice birdie for Michael Joe as well going to keep his fourstroke lead at the end of this front nine clean golf very impressive to watch the rest of the card kind of hovering around even we’ll see if any of these guys can make a push on the back nine taking a look at the rest of the leaderboard nobody under par oh just kidding Matt Miller sorry did not mean to gloss over the only guy trying to make a push under par other than Michael Joe starting to run away with this thing but it is not over yet we got nine holes left so make sure to head over to the back nine and we will see you there

  1. And another state championship where winner is a non resident of said state. State championships should be for said state residents

  2. Literally just stumbled across this, never knew there were competitions for this. 20 mins in, I'm still here and kinda hooked.
