Rouge locking down the middle of the day live from the mercedesbenz of Baton Rouge Studios this is hunt [Music] bmer welcome in Hunt Palmer coming to you from the mercedesbenz of Baton Rouge studio downtown in the capital city on this Wednesday about half the work week in the rearview mirror appreciate you hanging out with us here on 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge got Jacob Beck and Cassie spaz back there on the ones and twos to get to over the next two hours here on this Wednesday K Riley covers the LSU baseball beat for The Advocate he’ll jump on at 11:5 talk about what he heard from Jay Johnson yesterday and well as what’s going on in the transfer portal right now so excited to have Ki join us in 15 minutes it is a Whata if Wednesday we’ll do a little bit of that US Open starts tomorrow I got $100 to spend on that we’ll talk about some bets for Pinehurst over the weekend Blake topm from Yahoo sports came out with the sec’s chances to make the college football playoff what does you think about your fighting tigers of LSU what do you think about Old Miss Georgia Texas A&M we’ll talk a little bit about that some sound from Jay Johnson some sound from Dennis Allen so we got tons to get to over the next two hours it has been a wild 24 hours in the news cycle for LSU baseball um I think a lot of this hay was probably in the barn over the weekend there were a lot of official visits and J Johnson’s alliver planes but you kind of sit back and wait for social media for things to happen and we’ve seen some commitments to the LSU baseball team out of the transfer portal specifically from tournament teams at a lower level of college baseball the first was yesterday and that was Luis Hernandez who comes to LSU from Indiana State you know that Indiana state was a team that was very much in the mix to be a regional host a lot of this year had a very solid record a very solid RPI they went to Lexington Kentucky they got to the regional final but were beaten over in Lexington by Kentucky Luis Hernandez uh Phils need for this team potentially I back last Wednesday when the season was over we kind of put a bow on it on Tuesday Wednesday I started to talk about what this team needs to look like as they enter the transfer portal enter the summer and and figure things out with the major league baseball draft and when I did that I took my tablet here and I wrote a baseball diamond on it drew a baseball diamond and I just started writing names in the positions where I thought they would be and I had Jake Brown out there and I had Josh Pearson out there and I had um Steven milum there and I I put braswell’s name with a question mark and how you would imagine that would look on my sheet of paper and at first base and third base I did not write names I wrote the word homers I wrote homers at first base and I wrote homers at third base and that’s something LSU needs because right now I don’t project Steven milum or Jake Brown or Ashton lson or Josh Pearson or Michael brazwell any of these players that could come back and be starters for LSU next year I don’t project a lot of those guys hitting 20 homers it’s possible development happens but I I I would prefer if LSU is going to compete for championships like we suggest that they will that you got some guys on the corners that can hit it over the fence and Luis Hernandez at Indiana State could hit the ball over the fence now he didn’t do it his first two years his freshman year in Indiana State he hit four in his sophomore year Indiana State he hit five but this past year he hit 23 now does that mean he’s going to hit 23 in the SEC I don’t know it happens we’ve seen guys come up from a lower level of college baseball and perform at the SEC level I think about sunny desara at Auburn who won SEC player of the year he was at Samford that’s not necessarily the mecca of college baseball but his game translated and then you’ve seen some players that have come from a lower level up and it didn’t necessarily translate I mean benol was an all League player at VCU got all League recognition didn’t really play much at LSU he was a great team team guy he was a quality defensive replacement on the infield but he never became like a starter so you never you can’t be sure but he’s got a tool that LSU is looking for and I turned the film on and I saw the video and look he’s got a power stroke he’s got a little bit uppercut swing he hits it out to the pull side I did see some backside power that he showed in Indiana State I like the effort here this is a guy that had a 359 batting average his Ops was over 1100 he didn’t walk a ton 17 walks in 59 games I would like that walk rate to be a little bit better but he’s got a tool that LSU needs now he’s done some catching he’s played some first base he’s been a DH I think this is insurance for Bear Jones if Jarry Jones comes back to LSU he’s the first baseman and Luis Hernandez probably dhes a little bit I don’t know that he can play Third Base and maybe he can catch I don’t know I hadn’t seen enough of that this is an ad based on his Bat based on the power in his Bat he’s not a big guy you’re talking about about six feet tall probably just south of 200 lb but hit a home run at Miami hit a home run in the regional at Lexington I I’m I’m a fan of this ad this is not Tommy White this is not Jacob Barry those are Surefire things this is not Braden Montgomery coming from Stanford those guys are proven and we thought M Bingham was a proven commodity that came in last year and and his batting average was 100 points lower at LSU than it was at Arizona but I like the thought behind adding Luis Hernandez to this roster now he is draft eligible he’s played three years of college baseball so like has happened in the past with LSU they’ve had some guys signed that didn’t end up here you saw Dylan to Brock who was kraton’s best pitcher who was committed and he ended up going to the Mets in the draft you saw um Carter Young from Vanderbilt get signed Baylor shortstop pan got got signed in the draft so this is not a sure thing but I like the the idea here offensively now there’s been a lot of reports on LSU pitching today uh but the one that we we can confirm is that LSU has received a commitment from Zack Cohen the Ace from wford and I could go back over my Scouting Report from Zack Cohen like I just did with Luis Hernandez but instead of doing that right now with the understanding that he’s going to pitch for LSU next year why don’t we just go back exactly two weeks because two weeks ago I broke down this wford team preparing for the regional because obviously LSU was going to play them that Friday and my assumption as of that Wednesday was that Zack Cohen would get the ball we know now that he did not but instead of understanding he’s going to pitch for LSU why don’t you just hear from me what saw when I watched Zack Cohen getting ready to give you my thoughts on wford two weeks ago this is two weeks ago on Wednesday leading into the regional we’ll start with their Ace Zack Callen who everyone believes that LSU is going to see on Friday and I watched him pitch last night I watched six Innings of Zack Cowan pitching not highlights not bits and pieces here like I watched him pitch six full Innings the REM the the pitcher that he reminded me of was Tanner Hall from right here in the bat area who went to Southern Miss and had a spectacular career and ended up going in the fourth round now full disclosure I know that Tanner Hall hits low 90s 91 92 up to 93 at the end of his Southern Miss career I didn’t have a radar gun on Zack C which compromises my ability to fully speak to what he is as a pitcher because you’re watching low-level baseball here you’re looking at the socon and I don’t have on the broadcast a radar gun but he’s 5’11 180 and right-handed he’s a little shorter he’s a good athlete he’s not super projectable that’s very much like Tanner Hall at Southern Miss there’s a lot of junk and none of it straight he’s sinking his fast ball he’s cutting it he’s throwing a slider he’s got a big change up he’ll throw nothing he throws is straight and his goal is to keep you very off balance he throws a lot of different pitches and a lot of different counts which is a positive for him he’s not dependent on his fast ball he’s not dependent on the change up being his devastating pitch it’s not a wipe out slider he’s just going to kind of throw them all 3-1 I’ll flip a change up in there 02 I’ll throw the fast ball like he’ll he just he mixes it up and that’s what keeps hitters off guard I think he’s a nice pitcher I think he would be in the starting rotation at some SEC schools based on what LSU threw out there in a lot of game threes this year I I’m not certain that Zack Callan couldn’t fit in there is he facing the SEC I don’t think so he’s facing a lot of socon teams he had some really good outings he had some outings that were not that great but the thing that he does every time out against that level of competition is get deep into games he got into the sixth inning in every start since his first one those are my thoughts on on Zack Cohen as a scout like Scout not a I’m certainly not a scout when I’m scouting him to talk talk about him on the air to you um and I don’t feel any differently two weeks later uh he is a pitch ability guy he’s not going to rely on a power power arm he doesn’t have trouble throwing strikes he just knows how to pitch he’s a great athlete and watford’s Coach entering the regional said he’s basically just like if a short stop grabbed a ball and went and pitched that’s that’s what he is um so I think this is a quality ad I think there’s a high floor here for Zack Cohen it would surprise me if he struck out 24 next year like he did this year in the socon but I think he can fit in on the back end of a rotation if you tell me that I’ve got the upside of Chase Shores Griffin Herring Kate Anderson that type of upside potentially you know let’s pie in the guy here and talk about William Schmidt you give me those kind of upside guys that could potentially show up and pitch on Fridays and potentially come show up and pitch on Saturdays and you give me that guy on a Sunday that throws a lot of strikes and can mix and change speeds and can flip a change up and cut a fast ball and is very comfortable throwing 115 118 pitches there’s a spot there again this is not a guy I would suggest is going to show up on Friday and star down next year’s Hagen Smith but can he help yeah I think he can so I think this is a quality ad for LSU it’s not an ace and I don’t think that was the goal here the goal here is to have as many quality pitchers as you possibly can for SEC play and then of course when you get into to Regional play as well so the news of the last 24 hours Luis Hernandez Zack Cohen committed LSU via the transfer portal I’m quite confident there is much more to come uh in that regard we’ll talk to K Riley coming about it next um our baseball breakdowns all season long brought to you by Pluckers two locations Nicholson south of Campus blue Bonet in front of the mall advocate joining us every Wednesday all season long lot of that was just talking about what was going on the field now it’s the chaos that is the transfer portal we’ll chat with k a little bit about that as he joins us in the gyms Firearms hotline K how are you doing pretty well how’s it going going quite well um let’s talk about the transfer portal first and then we’ll talk about Jay’s press conference yesterday because I think there was some real interesting stuff that went on there you just put some quotes up uh on your Twitter feed and up there at the website about what Jay said about Zack Cohen when the wford pairing was announced early in the week prior to the regional what did you see when you dug back into those quotes yeah um I rarely does J get into that much detail when it comes to like why picture is as good as he is sometimes he’ll do it but not like an often thing and that type of thing he does often so the fact that it seemed like just send these quots was pretty obvious that again this was just the day before the CH Regal started um and it it it just seems pretty obvious that he was pretty enamored by this kid and and thought he was a really good pitcher and um just by the amount of detail that he was um able to talk about him with and just sort of the compliments of his athleticism his ability to locate the change up his ability to uh store Stripes Andor you know throw pitches that look like scon turns the balls and um all that all these little things really show shows me that they’ve been interested in this guy for a while or at least when they did the Scout rept um heading into the Chapel Hill Regional they found out this guy was really really good so um now that he’s GNA be pitching for LSU next season at least comp to me um then you know you’re looking at a guy who is gonna help you out in the rotation or at least start the season as someone who could definitely help you out in the rotation and um he threw a lot of inions last season 110 uh and you know as we detailed probably on this show he threw I think twice threw twice in a five day span at the sou Conference tournament which is uh pretty wild so again he was used a whole bunch last season this past season but uh again like this is a guy who can really helped build a rotation spot for you when you need at least one more guy who could definitely do that and count kind of um a good option for at least in my opion be let’s try to reconnect with K that sounds a little bit fuzzy on on his ends K we’ll hang up and and call you right back um I and I I agree with K’s sentiment there for sure I I think that obviously Jay spent a lot of time between Memorial Day and that Friday scouting Cohen probably watched five to eight of his starts and and and felt like that’s probably the guy that they were going to see and clearly saw something he really really liked it’s the athleticism does jump out and he does have a very very repeatable motion and a lot of things that he throws look the same coming out of his hands I don’t know that he’s got necessarily overpowering stuff but it’s it’s pitch ability stuff I think it’s it’s the ability to move the ball both ways to change feeds and to keep guys off balance and there was a real emphasis on power stuff in the class that LSU has brought in the last two years and they’re still going to do that I mean look they got got a few guys in this class that really throw hard uh Maverick rzy throws really hard William Schmidt throws really hard um like you’re going to continue to bring some of those guys in but having a little bit of a mix and some Pitch ability I think helps in that way as well I think we got you back here let’s talk about Luis Hernandez power hitting right-handed bat from Indiana State how big an emphasis is is adding power to this lineup for Jay as they move into to next season yeah I think it’s absolutely huge and I think Jay J can even mention this as uh sort of a something that that they need to sort of um find this season um as he was sort of going through uh some of the guys that they added some of the junior college players they officially added uh to next year’s team maybe not officially one or two of them could get drafted who knows but um guys who are at least you know locked in and committed for for next season’s team um I I think it’s just they really need power I mean not just because they’re losing Tommy White and hating trinsky for sure um also because you know he might have to J Jones back next season and if that’s the case then you’re not going to have any returning players with doubl RS last year and you need be you need to be able to take advantage of the hit or friendly Park that you have and um I I I think you know getting a GU like Hernandez we can clearly the B the per SL freers from Indiana State last season I think that would be really huge I think that’s a really big addition for this team and he has a little bit of experience at catcher in the Outfield as well there might be a little bit of Versatility there but my guess heast going to be like more a first Bas D type and a in a hitter first for them next season let’s talk about Jay’s press conference yesterday um because I I thought there were some very interesting things that he had to say and I thought his tone was was a little bit telling what was your biggest takeaway uh from his 45 minute meeting with you all yesterday well um I thought it was interesting that he He just flat out mention that you know pulmanary reached out to him telling him that he was going to take to South Carolina job um this this was you know like four hours before South car even now what was going to happen um so there’s that um and there’s also when ites just like all the field stuff um wasn’t very revealing specifics as to you know how many guys he might think might um how many of those talented profession who might think uh could get drafted or um or what he was looking for specifically in the transit portal or any of that stuff um so I it I you know it would been great for a little bit more detail for you know people like you and me um but there was a tone of we we’re gonna fix this thing because this past year didn’t quite go the way that happened would happen but it’s okay and we’re moving on and you know um we’re gonna build back better I guess K we appreciate some time man uh keep up with that transfer portal it’s uh it’s it’s it’s fast moving oh yeah it is all right thanks for having me out guys East K Riley with the could apologize for the sound quality there just I couldn’t quite get the cell phone to cooperate it happens on live radio from time to time but I I’m I’m with uh I’m with K on the on on Jay Johnson’s um press conference yesterday it was the first time we had honestly heard him philosophically shift in his time at LSU Paul maner had to do that a couple different times with the changing bats and he talked about it he he wanted to to bring in um guys that uh that could play multiple positions because the power was gone from the game and there’s no real point in bringing in a power hitter in the BB core era because you bring that guy in and he can’t quite hit for power well now he can’t play defense and he can’t really run and he doesn’t hit for batting average and he can’t L down a bunt for you and now you got a useless player on your team so we’re going to recruit a lot of Short Stops in center fielders and he transitioned out of that and had a great team um in in 2017 that did have some power bats on it Greg Dykeman certainly fits that mold even though he did play shortstop uh in high school um and so I I think that the transfer portal and and what it means for Jay Johnson has changed his philosophy I I mentioned this yesterday and we’ll probably do it a little bit in the second hour as well but like I’m confident that when Jay Johnson sat down post Omaha last year and looked at his signing class and looked at the returning players and what the roster was going to look like and then kind of mapped that out and in this the 2024 season in 2025 when he looked at 2025 I’m sure he felt really really confident that Paxton clang and cam Johnson would be a huge part of that maybe your three- hole hitter and Friday night guy like that that’s not completely out of the question and now both guys who he thought he had immense talent that He could mold are out the door and that’s a gut punch when as he said yesterday this is not me saying this he said yesterday like that’s my wheelhouse developing a program and player development and now you’re not you may have your number one power hitter next year come from Indiana State your third starter next year might come from Watford now that’s not completely out of left field your Friday night guy was from Air Force last year and was from UCLA this year and you had Luke Heman from Bama and certainly you know you brought in Tommy White who you didn’t recruit and sign in high school but it’s I think it hits differently when when you are plucking guys from the transfer portal as opposed to guys leaving you that’s a different feeling it’s the same concept but it feels different and I I think I’ve said on these Airwaves that like LSU is kind of immune to the transfer portal in in baseball like you’re not going to see LSU’s best players leave and you have it it’s not like Tommy White bailed again it’s not like Sten milum jumped right in the portal to see who would toss him inil money like LSU is not hemorrhaging guys Paxton klling was a fourth outfielder this year and cam Johnson didn’t make the regional roster so it’s not like your best players are leaving but I still think Jay believes in himself that he can develop some of those guys and when that opportunity is taken away I think that’s an emotional thing for a coach it’s one thing to think about okay well we can just supplement here and there and get this guy get that that guy but then when you think about okay well now we’re vulnerable here our depth is going to be compromised guys that don’t play are going to be apt to leave like how do I combat that it’s it’s a completely different deal and you heard that in Jay’s tone yesterday we’ll hear a little bit more from him coming up in hour number two because I think some of the things he had to say were were really really interesting but I appreciate k for jumping aboard and giving us a little bit of information here as well our baseball breakdowns all season long brought to you by Pluckers when we come back it’s what if Wednesday Baton Rouge got some uh news on the Twitter machine that came out about an hour ago of course the SEC and ACC Ann ually lockhorns in a basketball challenge that takes place in December the SEC did have the the challenge with the big 12 it was ACC Big 10 and now they’ve kind of shifted things around and we’ve got uh we’ve got SEC ACC and LSU has its opponent it’s a big name opponent I’m not certain how good the team’s going to be but they’ve had a good program over the last 15 years um it’s Florida state Florida state will come to the assembly Center uh this year as part of the SEC ACC challenge seminal last year 17- 16 overall went 10 and 10 in conference play so they’re not what they once were I I think at at a certain point that was one of the top five programs in the ACC when they were really at their best you wouldn’t put them necessarily right there with Duke and Virginia won a national championship and was consistently really really good but Leonard Hamilton had a really good thing going there for a while and kind of run out of steam over the last couple of years over in Tallahassee so I don’t know how good they’re going to be maybe they’ve hit the portal and they’ve got a great team that’s coming in and they’ll be top 25 but my my thought is this is a team that’s going to be toward the bottom of that conference and we’re hoping that LSU is is not toward the bottom of the SEC anymore but that’s kind of how you you lock things up um you’re going to get the the big time matchups at the top of the league and then some of the Alla rans down there at the bottom my goal for Matt McMahon in this basketball program is to reach a point it’s going to be difficult but reach a point where LSU plays at Cameron indor like that’s what I want like it’d be cool to play at the dean Dome that’s nice and everything certainly Virginia’s got a lot of cache and all that but I want LSU at Duke that’s what I want because if that game gets put on the schedule I will be there I will find a way somehow someway maybe I’ll get credentialed so I can get in there like I don’t know but if LSU plays at Cameron I’m there my dad was there uh when Shaq played lner I think they made him take his LSU sweatshirt start off to sit in the student section I believe u but either way if LSU can get to Cameron I’m there we’re a long way off we’re we’re right now at Florida State in the pmac but you put a couple good years together maybe under John Shire Duke slips Just a Touch maybe they’re like the four seed in the ACC don’t want to send Kentucky there Alabama’s kind of got a cook in if LS you can get to Cameron that’s where I want to be so we’ll see if that can happen in the near future all right it’s Wednesday middle of the week here middle of the first hour that means it’s time for what if Wednesday time space reality it’s more than a linear path where a single Choice can Branch out into Infinite realities follow me and Ponder the [Music] question what if all right first one here what if you played in the US open at Pinehurst number two from the tournament te’s Lord uh that would not be good that would not go well at all um it’s too far I don’t hit it long enough and I hit it way too low for those greens that are rock hard and running off everywhere I don’t know what it would take for me to hit the green like I don’t think I would have any chance of hitting those green with like an Adar it just it’s too firm too hard and then I have to start putting on them they’re lightning like it would be horrendous like I think I could get it around Augusta in the master setup at around like a 100 I think I could there’s no rough and you can kind of play to some spots it’s not super long it’s not it’s pretty long but it’s not like obnoxiously long like some of these can be um yeah putting would be a big problem and I’d play a little hockey around the greens for sure but I think I could be respectable Around Augusta to an extent at this setup just no freaking chance I’m talking 145 like I just I don’t I mean if you told me I had to break 150 I could hit like a bunch of eight irons down the Fairway but like you told me I had to like try to play it and hit driver and then try to hit four iron up there it would just be an absolute disaster I would shoot up a jillion like there’s some of those videos that are coming out that where they drop the ball on the green and rolls all the way down towards the bunker it’s uh they’ve got this course keyed up like they want it and I think it’s going to be tough on those guys this weekend all right next one here what if the 1994 MLB strike never happened does Michael Jordan ever come back to the NBA yes I I would I absolutely think that he would we’ll never know exactly what happened there because Michael’s so hard-headed so stubborn so confident and convicted and he’s not going to show we don’t we’re just not going to know there’s all kind of cons conspiracy theories about all that went into that with his dad and baseball and the the whole thing he was going to come back to basketball at some point why he left why he went back what the strike had to do with it what his dad had to do with it all that kind of stuff you can speculate until the cows come home I guess and you’re never I don’t think really going to going to know that story but he was he was never just going to leave at that point not with that much great basketball left in him all right we got one from the YouTube chat this one’s from Ed O nus bus what if Texas lands J Johnson and LSU replaces him with Tony vello all right we’re playing the what if game we’ll play the what if game it’s one of those deals where um I think LSU fans would learn to love him look I mean Tony vello it’s hard to argue with what he’s done at at Tennessee um he’s in Omaha three years ago beat LSU to get there the next year they had what I think is the best college baseball team I’ve ever seen they didn’t get to Omaha and that’s part of it but in terms of the power on the mound not even just DOL Ander Burns and beam but they also had Ben Joyce in the back end who’s in the big leagues now thr 103 milph and they hit just a bajillion home runs that was a frightening team and they came back last year and were in the final four well no they didn’t quite get there cuz LSU and wake would have been in the final four they were right there in Omaha with the chance and then they got skined and then this year they’re the number one seed like theyve he’s run a phenomenal program up there at Tennessee do you like his attitude no you need him bumping officials in the chest no but if he was at LSU I think he’d win a ton and I think LSU fans would have to kind of learn learn to love him like I did not like Brian Kelly it had L little to do with what he said in press conferences or what he you know what he looked like on the sideline it had everything to do with the fact that there was an ND patch on his chest and I don’t like Notre Dame because we have to bend all the rules to C out to Notre Dame because they were good in the 20s and that drives me nuts but I didn’t I didn’t like Brian Kelly because he was the head coach at Notre Dame he comes to LSU of course he’s the LSU coach so um that would kind of be I think what what the situation would all right last one here What if Paul Maneri never started experiencing neck pain or discomfort that’s an interesting one because I do think that he would have coached differently in terms of recruiting and energy and ability at practice and scouting and I think everything changes because when you when you just feel that bad it’s hard to do your job and I I don’t know that he would tell you that he did not do the job to the standard with which it must be done at the end because he just couldn’t and if he never felt that he wasn’t too old he was in he was in his early 60s that’s clearly not too old uh to do the job um you look at the trajectory of the program they went to Corvalis and got beat they they then were not a host they went to um Eugene and and won that Regional um then you know they they get to that Super Regional but the co team wasn’t it just they weren’t quite at the level they were from from 12 through 17 so 18 through 21 was just not as good as as 12 to 17 so the question is when he brought that class in and he would have had on his teams right there right after he finished he would have had Cruz he would have had Morgan he would have had Thompson he would have had boso he would have had dugos um he would have had malazzo um the question is was he going to be able to go get the pitching and I think if Paul maner with a national championship to his name and six straight national seeds and in the Hall of Fame and and if he had access to the transfer portal while he’s a head coach at LSU I think they could have brought in some really good players do I think he would have approached it the same way Jay has no um I think Jay Johnson was the right guy to step in at that time to make this happen and you’re seeing it again this year but I think that Paul would have put some good teams on the field there for the next three or four years and I think he probably goes out on his terms as opposed to his next terms that’s that’s kind of the way that that I see it got any other ones all right let’s see if we got any more oh yeah I saw one uh this one I think who was it let’s see I think it was Nookie said what if Pringles came in a bag I don’t think it would change that much like well I don’t know that it would work would they crack as much that’s what yeah that’s why I don’t I don’t know they would just crack a ton like right because other chips they’re okay even if they crack because they maybe be a smaller version of whatever it is but a pringle I mean I could eat half a pringle just yeah but I feel like the I feel like the whole like draw of the Pringle is just that every single Pringle is the same shape and you know what you’re getting and and yeah I think it’s just a delicious taste in chip if you got sour cream and onion of course um and then you can make the duck beak with it if you want like that’s uh that’s really what you do when you’re nine did you do that right yeah I actually did not you didn’t make the duck Pringles I didn’t did you oh I for sure did okay look act like you’ve been there before back this is an American Pastime I for some reason didn’t do that I did what’s the best flavor Pringles uh Pizza is mine Pizza yeah what the pizza Pringle is is not impressed with that answer I mean it’s got to be sour cream and onion my op I like those to and I don’t know I’ve ever had what’s your favorite like the sour cream onion yeah Cassie IR on the same page be’s not doing the do Bill he’s eating pizza flavored chips um and that’s it for what if Wednesday here on this Wednesday um we got a lot to get to in hour number two fired up for it we’re going to hear um some sound from Jay Johnson yesterday we’re going to hear some sound from Dennis Allen um and then um I want to talk at the top of hour number two about each team’s chances to make the college right as you all know the mission statement of this show since we launched it was to make sure that you The Listener get as rich as possible Absolut that’s really all we’re focused on here at the hunt Palmer show might be a bit of an exaggeration but every once in a while mainly four times a year we toss out some opportunities for you to make some cash and let’s just be quite honest about it usually they’re completely Incorrect and you would make no cash if you followed through on said bets however I did hit on one for the masters with Sheffer winning by more than two shots so we’ll see you did after the PGA where we went a ridiculous 0 for five and really weren’t close on any of them if we can get the magic back for the US Open that starts tomorrow at Pinehurst in North Carolina all right Beck let’s see what you think about these plays as always we take a $100 we go to ESP in bet we see how we can chop it up we’re looking for good odds we’re not looking for the chalk here I’m not asking you to bet $20 on Scotty Sheffer to win $28 like that’s not that’s not what we’re looking for here we’re looking for Quality odds to get down on the US Open we’ll start with a $20 bet on a winner Matt Fitzpatrick and we know he’s won the US Open before that was a couple years ago that was at the Country Club at Brook line and this is not too similar to the country club at Brookline but I just like Matt Fitzpatrick’s game in the US Open he’s hits it long enough now he used to not now he does he is a Precision High player he’s a great chipper even though I drives me nuts to watch him chip left hand low and he puts it pretty good if of course you care about that the golf I don’t like the left hand load chipping it looks stupid but he’s good at it um and and I I I don’t I don’t like Matt Fitzpatrick and a birdie Fest week to week on the tour to go to the 3M and win at 24 under but grinding he’s good at that and I like his odds at plus 4500 to win a $20 bet on Matt Fitzpatrick Nets you $900 we like those odds right there what do you think about Matty Fitz I like it too uh he hasn’t played super good this whole season uh but he he definitely has the type of game that that can Co out and and when a winning score is possibly going to be even or maybe even lower than that it’s it looks pretty tough I I think I think that’s not a bad bad play at all with the odds I got a top 20 here and you got to go way down the leaderboard to get good odds on a top 20 because that’s that’s a wide net you’re casting there Harry higs is my pick here to top 20 Harry higs doesn’t even have full-time status on the PGA tour so why would I say he’s going to get in the top 20 well he’s won twice in a row row within the last month on the corn fairy tour he has played in Majors before he’s playing as good as he ever has in his career it’s plus 750 for him to top 20 that’s $20 to win 150 bucks I’ll take those odds there let’s take the big rig Harry higs to top 20 now Scotty Sheffer it’s hard to get any money down on Scotty sheffler and get any return but I did find one that you can get some return on Scotty sheffler being the first round leader it’s plus ,00 so a $20 bet on Scotty Sheffer to be the first round leader will pay you $220 we like those odds it’s better than pting him to win so we’ll take that just one good round Sheffer go out there shoot a 66 on Thursday we could cash that ticket right there top 10 BET another guy who’s been playing pretty good golf the last two years but hadn’t necessarily climbed all the way up and been in contention in a major but maybe this week is the week for Jason day I’ve got him to top 10 at plus $675 that is $20 to win $135 any chance chasing day can top 10 uh yes he’s played pretty well this year he’s played pretty solid in in the majors for the most part so I I could see that I mean he’s he’s uh he’s had a the last few years really he’s been playing pretty well so I I wouldn’t be I wouldn’t be shocked at seeing that and I got one more winner bet I had Matty Fitz at the top at plus 4500 this one’s only plus 2,000 not nearly as good but still pretty good considering this guy demolishes these really difficult setups that’s Brooks kka got Brooks kka to win plus 2,000 that is $20 to win $420 I don’t know how good he’s playing I don’t know what he’s doing over on live I I don’t really care but whenever these really difficult setup showed up now he’s better when they make it 7,800 yards and the roughs knee high and the fairways are razor thin that’s where he dominates and this is not that this is a little bit more room off the te kind of some chance in the rough where you got that wire grass and then greens that are just diabolical at this point which they weren’t at Aaron Hills and sometimes are not where he has won but he’s just Nails in these events so I’ll I’ll take Brooks I’ve got I’ve got one as well just to throw just to throw in there in case you want to drop an extra $20 the winning margin it’s got uh four strokes or more at plus 350 and I think I think this could be Scotty Sheffer running away with this tournament I think he’s just he’s he’s just playing absurd he’s playing on the Tiger Woods level we we saw in 2014 when when the USA was at Piner Martin kimer won by eight strokes and he was just he just played on a whole another level at that tournament and and Cher’s just been doing it even more consistently so I I I could see sheffler winning by four or more so I I I go plus 350 there I don’t think it’s bad at all it it’s the only way you can you can get money down on sheff is to try to trick it up and and I don’t I don’t disagree with that I did at Augusta it hit and look I mean he’s he wins Bill he wins The Players he wins the Masters he wins Hilton Head he wins Memorial he just he’s just winning them all and the only way he doesn’t win is if if they arrest him for doing nothing so hopefully that doesn’t happen open North Carolina this week the US Open will start tomorrow morning we’ll keep you posted on how these bets look on Monday we come back what’s LSU’s chance to make the college football playoff Blake topm gives his thoughts I’ll give you mine on Rouge Studios this is hunt bmer [Music] hour number two Wednesday edition of The Hunt Palmer show half the work week in the rearview mirror thanks for hanging out with us on 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge a lot of sound from head coaches in this hour Jay Johnson with his press conference yesterday Texas rumors Chase Shores progress some of the recruits that are coming in in this class let you hear about that and Dennis Allen uh talking about Saints mandatory mini camp Alvin chra lante Taylor Chase young Ryan Rami a lot of things that we’ll get to in that segment as well but we start with some football um Blake topm with Yahoo went through basically the big dogs in the SEC and talked about what the fpi this objective computer measure rates the SEC teams playoff chances and then what he rates the SEC teams playoff chances and I thought there were some interesting things and I think to start in this segment I want to say that all of this is great because in my opinion there’s a really good chance that when we get to November 1st Halloween into November 1st when LSU has that buy and everybody’s kind of played seven or eight games it’s my opinion and this will be born out and we’ll be able to look at it that there will probably be six or seven SEC teams who believe they can get in the playoffs and compete for a national championship and as I’ve said for years like that is a good thing I am willing to make the trade that suggests that having six teams locked in on potentially competing for a national championship is better than wanting the drama that comes with two teams playing one huge game and the winner moves on and the loser has to go home I realize that the drama of the college football regular season is a draw to the sport my suggestion is I will trade that where two losses in your season for more teams on the back end looking at this going we still got a shot yeah we turned it over three times in that September game and lost one but you know what that’s okay look at what we just did with LSU’s baseball team they were dead and buried and then they revital ize the interest around here because you have an opportunity know I’m not suggesting you need to let 64 teams in the playoff and let’s let the six and six teams like LSU was you know under 500 play for it and I’m not saying that Florida season deserves a ton of Celebration even though they’re in Omaha now but I do think that creating interest is a really good thing and maintaining that interest is a really good thing it would surprise me if Georgia wasn’t in the mix on November 1st it would surprise me if Texas wasn’t in the mix on November 1st it would surprise me if Bama wasn’t in the mix Missouri Tennessee Oklahoma LSU all Miss A&M a lot of these teams are going to have life on November 1 now the Bottom’s going to fall out for somebody it does every year every year but there are going to be more teams locked in so let’s look into some of these numbers that he throws out there and we’ll get to lsue here shortly but he he starts at the top with Georgia the FBI thinks that Georgia has a 79% chance to make the playoffs top Meer would suggest it’s better than that he goes to 87% and if we’re thinking which I do that the barometer for the playoff is likely in the SEC 10- two the likelihood that Georgia loses three games is just not very good now they do play Bama and they do play Texas and they do play Old Miss and so like there are some landmines there but suggesting that Georgia is going to trip on all those is probably ambitious I think they’re going to make it Texas fpi says 68% top Meer way more says 79% now we’ll see they don’t have the proven track record that Georgia does Georgia’s now done this for about five years Texas has one really good season in rearview miror is that sustainable the recruiting pattern would say yes the coach that comes back will see the quarterback that comes back will see but I think Texas has a real good chance to be in the thick of this whole thing now how when how far back do you have to go I mean I know the answer it’s got to be 2008 you have to go back to where bama by the fbii has got a 57% chance to make the playoffs I haven’t personally made my decision on how I’m going to feel about Jaylen milro on September the 1st as I sit here in the middle of June I’m going to allow myself to breathe a little bit I trashed him last September I praised him last November we’ll see but that roster is just not what it was in 2011 what it was in 2020 it’s just that’s not the roster they have right now doesn’t mean they can’t make the playoff this gives them better than a 50% chance to make it but it’s not quite what it was you still got to go down the list here to get to LSU Missouri is the fourth best odds according to the FBI that’s down to 37% so you’re looking at basically a one and three shot topm feels about the same 34% with Missouri you know I need I need a little more information before I’m going to go ahead and declare them a relevant program nationally like that may be a little egotistical for me down here in Baton Rouge to do with my three national championships that I’m carrying around all over the place but you had one 10- win year you want me to just assume that that’s going to be replicable like that you got Brady cook back and yeah that’s a stud out there with Luther Burton but you lost your defensive coordinator you lost LSU last year you lost to Georgia last year like do I really want to give you the benefit of the doubt I’m probably not there right now Tennessee right there with them 37% that offense didn’t look as good without hooker last year now you would suggest yeah well we had Joe Milton and he’s not that great and now we’ve got Nico and he’s going to be the answer he’s going to be able to Pilot this ship that hypo wants we’re going to be hyper good on offense and we’re going to get better than we have been on defense maybe but right now the success that Josh hyp has had in that program is all in the back of henen hooker so prove it like I don’t have to ask that question with Georgia they’ve proven it they’ve done it with different quarterbacks they’ve done it with different def defensive players they continue to send them out in the first round they’ve proven it I’m not going to give Missouri and Tennessee that benefit of the doubt then you get to Oklahoma in front of LSU 36% is what the FBI says and Blake topm only gives it 14% you lost your quarterback you’re counting on a young five-star Hot Shot there to be the Savior I do trust Brent venol to put a good defense on the field this is year three for him I was so impressed with their defense in the super doome against Joe burrow and Company realized they got torch for 40 plus but they they did a good job early in the game as good as you could do against that team there really wasn’t anything you could do I think vinales will eventually get a good defense there do we trust that offense to hum that remains to be seen and then you get to LSU and by the way we haven’t gotten Old Miss yet and that’s something I want to talk about but LSU 25% chance to make it by the fbii top Meer says a little bit better at 35% and he gives his kind of reason behind that he says the Topo meter which is Blake’s Blake’s thoughts on it assessment of LSU is similar to that of Tennessee good offense questionable defense they got four opponents to stand out Southern Cal ol Miss Bama Oklahoma can they split against those four well only one of those is a road game Southern Cal is not a road game Old Miss is at home and Oklahoma’s at home oh Bam’s at home too none of those are Road games that’s interesting um so can you split against those for none on the road probably it’s reasonable to discuss and if you do you just got to take care of your business against some of the Lesser teams on your schedule Arkansas for example Vanderbilt for example South Carolina for example now I’m not ready to write off A&M completely especially at Kyle Field but that’s a reasonable thought I’m not ready to call LSU a national championship Contender with that defense right now but I hope to proven wrong and that’s an optimistic thought from a human computers don’t like it as much but miss is down at 20% by the fpi this is something I’ve heard Matt mson say on our afternoon show and it’s born out when you look at polls you look at list you look at articles like this from Blake topm the computers Hate Old Miss and the humans love them and that’s the biggest chasm in this thing because the FBI says 20% for Old Miss and Blake topm says 59% he says they’ve got better than a 5050 shot to make the college football playoff the computers say eh one and five and Blake says I see three tough games at LSU vers Oklahoma verse Georgia a trip to the swamp to face Florida not a slam dunk but if you split those four the rebels ought to be in good shape yeah I mean Miss doesn’t play Bama they don’t play Texas their toughest Road game is LSU who they beat last year but the the humans love the portal aspect of this and I don’t think the computers do now I personally like the Jackson Dart aspect of it if we’re just being objective about all Miss I think it gives them a great chance I think he’s a really good quarterback and you know how much I think of Lane kein as a play caller but I don’t have any significant beef with this I think the overarching themes if we’re just talking about here in Baton Rouge top Meer thinks that LSU’s gota one in three chance to make it the computer say one in four chance to make it I don’t think that’s completely unfair but what I do think and I almost know is that there are going to be six or seven teams that that get through Halloween and go we’re still in this thing and that is not been the case for years I’m excited about that we’ll talk a little more football as we move forward if you’re looking for LSU football coverage you can certainly find it on YouTube hunt on LSU is our LSU football YouTube channel no baseball there no basketball there all football and football recruiting so go ahead and subscribe up to it get our videos sent right to your homepage each and every day here via the hunt Palmer show when we come back Jay Johnson had a lot of interesting things to say yesterday we’ll get to some of that coming up next you are now listening to the hunt Palmer show love telling you about evolved Physical Therapy Robbie Bolton’s about about two decades in the business of physical therapy and he’s looking for active people who are in some pain and discomfort maybe there’s a direct reason for that you’ve been injured playing golf or in a car accident or you’ve had a youth athlete in your family that’s been hurt on the field maybe it’s just a little bit of age and discomfort that comes with that he wants to help all of you whether again you’re a 9-year-old gymnast or a 65y old that just wants to get back Baton Rouge all season long our baseball breakdowns brought to you by Pluckers get on by for some dinner tonight um Jay Johnson met with the media yesterday and I thought had a lot of interesting things to to say um the most interesting answer to me uh was when he was asked about contact with Texas now keep in mind Texas once again still has a baseball coach David Pierce has not been let go to my knowledge as I said here today um but that’s the scuttlebutt on the internet and then there was a thought here Kendall Rogers on AFR that hey if Texas moves on from David Pierce which I think they will they’re going to shoot their shot with J Johnson and I don’t think they’ll leave but they’re going to try and so the question was asked to J Johnson like have you been contacted by Texas I have not been contacted and contractually if I was to be contacted Scott Woodward would be the first person that knows because that’s what it says in my contract and I’m very very thankful to be here and excited about where we’re headed is going to look a little different than maybe I thought like 18 months ago but that’s okay like I said um I think I’m built for this job incredibly well because you’re just going to face a lot of bullets coming at you and as I told you guys like yeah we’re not in Omaha but there was nobody better positioned to help us get through what we did than than me and that’s exactly what happened and I’m not saying it’s because of me but I feel like I’m very well positioned to be or help LSU and the players that commit and stay at LSU to be really successful I thought that answer was telling because jakay couldn’t stop his brain and he went from answering whether or not he was considering another job in the conference and leaving after winning a national championship one year ago and he immediately goed well it doesn’t look quite the same and we’re really well positioned and we got to get to like and he just he completely lost the train of thought of what what the deal was with Texas like he went to like how do we get back to Omaha is basically what he started answering and again like Jay Johnson cares more about college baseball than just about anyone it’s consumes his entire life he says that and nowhere cares more about college baseball than LSU I think he’s got the job he wants I don’t think there’s much to talk about there with with Texas I gave an update on on Chase Shores yesterday and uh and and a lot lot of people thought maybe he could come back this year and help LSU late that was never going to be on the table it just isn’t we’ve got to get this thing out of our mind that when a a player has Tommy John surgery during a season that they can come back in the next season and help in a significant way it’s just not realistic I’m not using the word impossible but it is not realistic and so now you go into an offseason where Chase sches has the ability to take things slow and and Jay spoke to that he’s rolling pretty good you know was was throwing a live Bullpen the other today um you know in a rehab thing and you know was up to 97.7 mph and we’re what 14 months uh or 13 and a half months off of surgery um you know sliders really improved uh him and Coach yki have been doing great work on that uh you feel great about that chase threw a lot of fast balls last year and and for him to mix in that slider is is a big big deal 97.7 plays today at LSU it plays with the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight but the slider is is going to be the differentiator and something that could get him potentially into the weekend rotation another guy that may potentially factor into the weekend rotation would be Griffin Herring if he returned and Jay spoke to that with his draft eligible sophomore left-hander we don’t have the season that we had without Griffin doing what he did when he did it and then he’s going to you know pitch on the weekend like I have no problem like saying that like I mean he’s earned that if any play he’s one of the best pitchers I’ve ever coached um so if he comes back now he puts together a season he’s capable of he’s one of the best players that ever pitchers that ever played here maybe a touch of hyperbole but look Griffin Herring was unbelievable this year he was he was absolutely awesome and I think having him back would be great and I think that’s part of the recruiting pitch here and Jay spoke to like the conversations that he’s got to have with these draft eligible guys in the hopes that he can get them back next year they were incredibly positive and it’s why like they all have a open door here I just I mean it’s not rocket science it’s like draft eligible sophomores harrying Jones I don’t know how they’re viewed I I don’t spend a lot of time looking at that stuff I know their value to me value to LSU baseball value they could create for themselves next year is really high and they have a platform here to do that and now it’s just a matter of if the right opportunity you know if somebody’s going to jump up and take those guys in the first round or the top 50 picks I would support them to go I would you know because it doesn’t come along and we’ll figure out a different way and that’s part of what our job is to do here but if they don’t I’d love to have him back that’s the difference in the conversation that football coaches have with their players who can leave for the draft early and baseball coaches football coaches need all the information what the draft grade is what teams think and then they’ve got to make their pitch now baseball coaches don’t really have to be concerned with where these guys are valued because they can they can wait and react to how the draft goes like if no one call call Jerry Jones in the first three rounds and he doesn’t get a phone call until round five and the signing bonus is 487 th000 like well then he just probably won’t take it but if he gets a phone call at beginning of round two and it’s 1.3 is the offer well then he will take it and Jay Johnson doesn’t have to know what that’s going to be ahead of time you just React to what it is and you do your best to fill in the roles on the team in preparation to it not going the way that you personally would want it at LSU so it’s just a different situation and I think that that that all Shake itself out I want to hear about four different guys expected to come in in this class for LSU the first one we’ll we’ll hear listen to is about Tanner Rees Tanner Reeves uh was the first commitment he committed actually in the spring of 2023 it was always to come for this this next year and he went had a phenomenal freshman season I think he was maybe the country leader in home runs as a freshman and I don’t think he hit as many home runs this year but he ended up hitting over 370 he was the MVP of the Junior College World Series I believe or he broke the hits record in the Junior College World Series his team won the National Championship very versatile player a guy that might be able to play every position but pitcher and catcher because he’s a great athlete left-handed hitter a player that I’ve had a ton of success with yeah I like the fact that Tanner is a left-handed hitter um I we thought potentially that could be a guy that might challenge um on the middle infield this year but was unaware that they were never going to bring him here this past year um I I think he’s a bat first guy left-handed bat who can really play but he’s a good athlete as well as as Jay talked about and that’s a guy that that should factor in the competition that goes on this fall blae prer is a guy that signed at LSU and showed up at LSU and worked out in a fall and then ended up moving on to Junior College and now is looking to come back and and Jay spoke about blae prer Blaze prer so I was named a a junior college All-American today which happy for him you know he’s evolved a lot since he was here the last time physically and um you know has really good power you know those types of things I think he’s refined a little bit as a hitter and so that’s great I think there’s some real potential in prer both defensively uh and then especially offensively with the power um you never know how power translates from a lower level to a higher level we had that conversation in the first hour with Luis Hernandez I don’t know what 23 home runs in Indiana State means at LSU and I certainly can’t translate exactly what J is going to look like when you come to LSU we’ve seen guys make the Joo jump and and be great at LSU we’ve seen guys make the Joo jump and not Braden joar that worked and go back to Shawn McMullen that that absolutely worked there have been some guys that have showed up here from juo that it was too much and I I I feel like prer is going to fit in because it wasn’t like to me he was completely overmatched when he was here in the fall a couple years ago um but now he’s a year and a half older and it’s time to see what he can can do Trevor schidt another guy this is not William Schmidt from Catholic High different Schmidt this is his thoughts on on Trevor Schmidt Trevor Schmidt hit a bunch of homers you know this year guy we signed during the the spring from California left-handed hitter power you know obviously with Tommy you know moving along and but Trevor has some some versatility in terms of first base Outfield you know those types of things and and has some power this goes back to the first segment I did today when we talked about Luis Hernandez and when I wrote that diamond on my pad of paper here and I was going through next year’s roster and what it could look like and on first and third base and then Corner Outfield I just wrote homers like you’ve got to find homers and Trevor Smith’s profile is that he will hit homers and so uh you you would hope that that that comes to fruition BL preachers got some pop as well Tanner Reeves hit a lot of home runs two years ago um these are all junior college guys that you hope come in and can help immediately it’s tough to to lean hard on freshman you saw uh Steven milum go through some real bumps there early in sec play you saw Ashton Larsson hit a little bit of a hiccup there late in Southeastern Conference play it’s tough to to ask freshman to do everything when they come in junior college guys should be a little more acclimated and ready to go we’ve heard about t Tanner Reeves heard about Blaise prer heard about Trevor Schmidt here’s his thoughts on Connor we Connor wear uh left-handed pitcher who who dealt with some injury stuff this year was able to get back at the end of the season pitch in the postseason has a great arm a really important really important recruit for us and I think there’s a chance that we’re could look towards the draft there’s always that risk with Joo guys certainly left-handed arms but LSU needs to overhaul this pitching staff because you’re losing a ton of Innings if you lose Herring I mean you lose jump you lose hullan you lose herd you lose Herring you lose Griffin Griffin you lose uh Christian little um you lose aenh Housen like that’s all your guys so you’re going to have to replace all of these Innings and you got to do that with as much depth as you possibly can because we know that things on the pitching perspective cannot go to plan at sometimes you’re sitting there in the span of three weeks last year and you lost Garett Edwards and CH Shores who were your top two guys that that stuff just happens and so um I’m I’m hopeful that you can get those guys to campus junior college recruiting can be tricky but they appear to have a pretty good class here on paper now it’s just a matter of getting him to campus and seeing how they acclimate uh in the fall and and whether or not they can be impact pieces for you in the spring our baseball breakdowns all season long brought to you by Pluckers Dennis Allen from Saints o no I get confused there it’s mini of Saints mini camp we’ll have the latest join us 3 to6 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge [Music] you’re listening to the hunt Palmer show on 1045 ESPN Bon Rouge moving right along here on a Wednesday edition of The Hunt Palmer show Saints in mandatory mini camp Dennis Allen met with the media yesterday also did today as well and you know sometimes as fans were sitting in the back and we going is this OTAs is this mini camp is it mandatory mini camp or just regular mini camp is a rookie this is mandatory mini camp and Dennis Allen spoke to what the Saints can get out of this week on the practice field there’s not really any true true evaluation of anything going on right now just because you know you’re limited in terms of what you can do from a contact standpoint right so I think you can you can get you know a feel but I certainly don’t think any decisions could be made based off what we’re seeing out here right now and and uh the good news is we got plenty of time to do that a lot of install I would think certainly trying to get the rookies on the same speed because when you get to training camp you want to hit the ground run and you want everybody on the same page it feels like a long time but coaches would probably tell you they don’t get enough time to get installed and get ready for that first game so to me I think it’s just more of an install situation for the Saints specifically on offense we were worried yesterday whether or not Marsh ladore would be there Alvin chra also in that numbers is he going to be at mini camp and he was so Dennis how he look you had to be in fairly decent physical condition to to you know get through this these elements out here today I mean it was hot out here today so I thought he looked explosive you know there’s a couple of really good really good runs that uh you know I was impressed with so again like I said both those guys uh being out here was a positive and and uh you know we’re looking forward to you know continuing to work with them and so my point being like a lot of install here we haven’t seen a lot of of Alvin chra in the off season we just he hasn’t been around all that much and so the question begs is like is he behind with this new offense in Clint kubak and Derek Carr and what they’re trying to get accomplished because you would imagine that Alvin C is going to be a pretty big piece to what they’re trying to do offensively so is he behind I would say that remains to be seen I didn’t get a sense that he was behind today you know in terms of being able to get lined up being able to execute his job you I think there might have been one protection that that uh he might have been off on I have to go in and look at it but but I thought for the most part he was he was on on point with his with his assignments and what he needed to be doing I think he’ll pick it up at this point Alvin C is a vet he’s a pro and and he’ll get that get that figured out if it’s not this week in mandatory mini camp I think he’ll have enough time in in training camp to to get all that figured out going over the defensive side of the ball lante Taylor uh is a guy that we’ve talked about a good bit Marshon Latimore’s name came out well is are they ready to move on from him and they can go ahead and put uh Paulson adbo out there what’s Kool-Aid McKenzie’s role and how does that handle elante Taylor and there are a lot of moving Parts there and this is Dennis Allen’s neck of the woods this is his his corner of the store whatever cliche you want to use he’s the secondary guy and uh he said that elante Taylor would be the starting nickel if it were today yeah I think as we sit here right now elante Taylor’s that guy is he willing to want to really do that how’s his confidence level there yeah I think his confidence level is good you know I mean I think there were some areas that he could could have improved on from last year I think he’s he’s approached it the right way he’s working extremely hard at it he’s a talented player and look I would say to be too harsh on him for his performance last year I think would be a little unfair and that you’re talking about a young guy that’s you know basically playing a position that he really hadn’t played and so you know those those things take a little bit of time to to uh to get a a feel for and I think you’ll see an improved player in that area this year I think a lot of times at least I’m a little bit guilty of this when it comes to like defensive back whether you’re playing on the outside to the boundary to the field whether you’re playing on the Nick like I feel like sometimes I just assume well if he’s quick and fast can flip his hips and and play the ball like he can play anywhere but the fact of the matter is that elante Taylor’s played on the outside forever he played on the outside at Tennessee and that’s where he’s made made his living in in in football and now because they’ve got Marshon Latimore because they’ve got paulon Ado like he has to go inside and there were some times where he struggled although there I thought there were some times he played really well as well so that’s a guy that’s just got to grow into it he’s got the skill set to do it he runs great got plenty of size I think he’s going to be fine in there at the nickels in and kind of elaborated on where he’s seen some growth from elante Taylor just his understanding of what we’re asking to do right now is is 10 times 20 times more than what it was at this point last year so the the the the floor that we’re starting at is is much higher than uh where we started at you know last year and so we’re really basically our floor this year is what our ceiling was last year you’re with me and we’re hoping to build on that I shook my head a little bit when the traded up to draft to what we would consider their strongest position they traded up in the second round to take Kool-Aid McKenry when they have all those guys we just talked about in the secondary that you feel pretty good about I backed up a bit a little bit on that and I was like you know what this is part of that new offseason thought process that’s like we’re not necessarily just signing players for this football team we’re not necessarily just drafting players for this football team we’re doing what’s in the best interest of the organization long term and if we think that elante Taylor’s coming along and we think that Paul senad Divo is a hit at corner and we think that Marshon Latimore might not be here as of the end of the 2025 season then maybe it’s in our best interest to go ahead and draft Koolaid McKenry for the future of this franchise he’s the best player we have on the board by a long shot we didn’t think he’d be here at this point let’s go get it so if that in mind like maybe Koolaid mckinstry is not out there for the first defensive snap you’d like to think a second round pick was going to help you as a starter that year but because of the depth that the Saints have maybe that’s not the case so Allen spoke to will he compete at the nickel I see him competing in that in that spot along with the outside corner position and so you know I don’t really see anybody being just a nickel only I see that position being a dual position player so whether it’s nickel safety nickel corner you know we don’t have anybody on our team that’s just a nickel only and that’s part of the Cross training that goes into this whole thing because you realize there are going to be injuries there are going to be hiccups there’s going to be poor performance and it’s just a good thing to have guys cross trained where they can go just about anywhere if you want to play some matchups and so um I think the draft pick does make sense even though I scratched my head at the beginning of this process and I think the Saints have done a really good job in a Passing League in a passing era of fortifying a really quality secondary I have my concerns with pass rush I have my concerns with depth and age at linebacker um and certainly have concerns on the offensive side of the ball with the offensive line but at secondary like I pretty much got a good feel for what you got and it’s pretty damn good so I would imagine the Saints will be in good shape there um so I I think that we’ll see KOA McKenry work a lot of different places and I think that he’ll probably be on the outside End early but there’s a real chance that as the season progresses that he’ll become a real factor for New Orleans on the defensive side of the ball and and kind of take over whenever the time is that Marshon Latimore is is out the door Latimore spoke today to the media and and expressed his desire to be on the team be with the team and do everything he could to make the team go and so I think that at this point you can assume that he’s part of this process and that Koolaid mckinstry is as well but just in a reserve role to this point so that’s your your Saints discussion for the day they got still one more day to go of mandatory mini camp and we’ll talk to Luke Johnson about everything that he’s seen coming up on tomorrow show if you’re looking for well so plenty to get to as we wind on through the summer I might throw a College World Series preview in there you never do quite know go ACC love the ACC big ACC guy here hopefully they just dominate the doesn’t sound are you maybe you’re you’re serious about that oh yeah okay you think I want these loser SEC teams that I hate to win the national champ all the all the SEC teams that are in the absolutely why well I can give you my reasons I mean I hate Texas A&M just because I hate them okay I know that but I hate um Florida because I don’t think Kevin ulvan is a great dude and I don’t like Florida um played him in the national championship game last year um who else is there Kentucky I still don’t like Nick M because what is it what is it with you in Kentucky you just years ago I still hate him you won’t give him any respect no and who’s the other team that’s in it you should know that of all people I’ll get there eventually Tennessee I’m not pulling that how could you not I mean I’m just not pulling for Tony V that’s not going to happen so go ACC love the ACC big AC guy all right let’s play take leave it all right first one here Paul skes received a standing ovation from Cardinals fans after throwing six and 2/3 scoreless Innings on Tuesday night I’ll just add to this if he was pitching for the Cubs I don’t think that they would have that would have happened but take it or leave it leave it this is so classic St Lewis they believe themselves to be this baseball in its purest form strongest fan base in the nation they’re just dorks this guy just dominated you for six and 2/3 he’s in your division you’re going to see him every year it’s like oh yeah good come on H we’re great Bas fans this is like LSU fans giving Stony Brook a Victory lap which should have never happened okay but yeah and LSU fans by the way that at the box it does happen a lot of times where I like it why why are you it should purely be it should purely be intimidation the entire time you’re out there now if somebody gets hurt we will put that on hold and hope that they get better and get them off the field into the medical attention they need if we’re just playing baseball and some guy dominates you I don’t want to see anybody clapping for him absolutely not that’s childish and pitiful it is interesting it doesn’t really happen in any other sports but for some reason baseball it does all right moving on Jerry West the logo as we talked about a few weeks ago wondering if they should change it anyway proba ill time probably not time very well by us how we didn’t know uh he he passed away but uh he is the most accomplished figure in basketball history take it or leave it I mean you could make the argument I probably wouldn’t but it’s I mean you look at Jordan’s executive career has been a disaster and you look at Larry Bird tried that as well um he he was phenomenal as an executive and phenomenal as a player um and then of course being the logo adds into that as well um I would probably lean toward you know Bill Russell or Michael Jordan before him but absolutely in the discussion so I think it’s a reasonable question but I’ll leave it the Mavs will defend their home floor tonight take it or leave it I’ll take it I think they show up in game three and win it I think it’ll be tight porzingis is reportedly dayto day probably won’t play in this game so that it does um but it’s just Luca Kyrie at home good crowd I think uh Boston hasn’t been infallible in the playoffs they’ve had some hiccups along the way I think the Mavs get them tonight US Open will most likely be Carnage on the score cards a winner at two over par should be the gold take it or leave it I’ll leave it I mean I want I don’t want it to be hard just for the sake of it being hard I don’t need quality shots being ping ponged all over the place and rolling everywhere I don’t need tiny tiny Airways with twoot rough and you can’t find golf balls like hard for the sake of hard is dumb I think diing the greens up is fine as long as you can put on them and they’re receptive enough to golf shots um I need Landing eras that are hitable and if you have some chance that’s involved like they do with this wire grass at Pinehurst like I think that works I think if the winner is one under and it feels like that it’s fair enough and that’s fine I’m good with it if the winner is seven under and it’s a tough Golf Course like I’m fine with that too like that or played tough last week and Scotty won it at what six or seven um that’s okay I don’t I just don’t need it to be ridiculously brutal in 5 hour and 40 minute rounds because nobody can finish like that’s not that’s not enjoyable to me I do need it to be scorable to an extent but if somebody wins it at 200 underpar because it’s it’s tough like that’s fine too yeah it seems like the USGA just for some reason always feels like they have to do as much as possible to make sure that the winning score is going isn’t going to be nine or 10 under I don’t need everybody hacking it out from the rough And then trying to hit it up there and the greens are too firm and we’re watering the greens because we can’t keep golf balls on them like that’s a waste of everyone’s time um I do think hard is good and I think that these guys can handle very difficult one week out of the year but within reason yeah all right last one here Jets coach Robert Salah told reporters that quarterback Aaron Rogers is not at mini camp today an unexcused absence that is subject to Salah said it was for an event important to him quote take it or leave it I’ll take it it’s fine like Aaron Rogers is going to come back when he wants to and he’s going to practice when he needs to and he’ll be ready to go if he stays healthy whether or not he’s out I mean Dennis Allen in the last seg we just did said yeah you can’t really get any any reps out here today I mean they’re not in full contact we can’t really evaluate anything we’ll figure it out later he’s like yeah Alvin C’s probably in good shape I mean if he’s telling me that here at Saints Camp then Aaron R not being at Jets camp probably not that big a deal I agree with you I just think it’s not the best look it’s not I mean I would be there if if I was the quarterback of the team I would be at mini game and not to mention just all the stuff that’s happened with Aaron Rogers the last few years with all just the weird going on as long as the important thing is not him taking a vice presidential nomination and retiring from football then I think the Jets will be okay again I would be at practice if I was the quarterback of a team and making whatever he’s making $40 million a year here but um again I don’t think this is going to impact the Jets in week one that he’s not there that’s just kind of my my two cents on that situation all right um who’s your pick for the US Open Beck uh yeah Sheffer I mean it’s uh for me it would be irresponsible to go with anyone else it feels that way I’ll go with Matt Fitzpatrick in that Spirit um I I don’t think Scot’s going to win every tournament from now until Kingdom Come he’s fairly on Pace to do that so we’ll uh we’ll just you see all Bennett Sheffer at Memorial that’s a quite a young child to have on the road at a golf tournament is look as long like like you said as long as he doesn’t get arrested for something really stupid I mean he was probably he was on track to play pretty well at the PGA so uh yeah I think how about this idea get a driver this week have somebody come pick you up idea Scott Drive in fact I would think that if if his manager was any good at his job he would say you’re not getting behind the wheel of any vehicle for this whole week you see the guy there’s a video of a guy pulling up to a m gas golf tournament with a fake police officer hanging on the car that’s good that’s good stuff quality entertainment all right that’s it for Wednesday
