Thanks for watching this review of the Ping S159 Wedges.
so as you guys can tell we are not in Manchester today today we are here out on the old course and the reason that we’re here is because we are testing out the new ping wedges now personally I feel if you can chip and get out of the bunkers here then you can get out of the bunkers anywhere and as a lot of you will know s Andrews is my hometown so I’m really excited to test these clubs out here [Music] so these are the new ping s159 wedges now I’m really excited to test these out they look great but make sure you stay tuned because we are going to be taking these out onto the old course in St Andrews and playing around with them this afternoon so doing a first impression of these wedges I do think they look very smart however on the back we can see here for me that ping lurer and the big black bar going across is quite aggressive and in your face but I do still think that ping have done a good job at including that but keeping the overall look of the wedges quite Clean and Smart there’s just a little bit more going on there than I would normally go for with my wedges now something else that is quite cool about these wedges is there are a lot of grooves on the face obviously you’ve got your normal grooves and in between that we’ve got these smaller almost wave looking grooves very funky very different and it might be something to get used to if you haven’t used wedges like this before when we look at the wedges down at a dress you can’t really see those extra grooves so it’s not super off-putting and they do look like they sit very well behind the ball when at a dress now interestingly with the two wedges that I’m testing out they are in two different grinds so they do look very different in terms of the shape of the wedges and as well because they’re two different Lofts there is quite a big difference on the face with the number of the grooves now the reason that these are in two different grinds is because of the fitting process that went through to get these wedges so essentially all you do is go online and answer some questions about the type of golf you tend to play so looking at the sand conditions the typical lie conditions whether you like to play the ball further forwards or further back in your stance and also what your average distances would be with your wedges from that quiz ping then tells you your recommended grinds that would best suit your game so these wedges haven’t been custom fitted for me in the traditional sense however they are customized for my game so let’s dive into a bit of the technology in these wedges now obviously when we were going through the looks I was saying how these two different wedges have very different looking grooves on the face now the reason for that is that ping has split the type of grooves depending on if you’ve got a high lofted or a lower lofted wedge so what we’re seeing is that in the lower lofted wedges you’ve got deeper grooves to help you with control over the long shots whereas those higher lofted wedges have a lot more grooves to try and give you extra Spin and control around the greens and as we’ve seen before with ping clubs we’ve got an elasa insert behind the head which essentially just adds a little bit more feel and better sound to these wedges so in total we’ve got 25 different Loft and grind combinations now I have got the 58 degree in the B grind which is a new Grind this year for the Ping wedges and a 52 Dee in s now these should be suited to my kind of game with Lynx golf conditions so I’m really excited to see how these perform and out here on the old course so let’s talk about how I get on with these wedges out on the old course so initially I was really struggling to hit good shots around the green until I accounted for that additional bounce and changed the style of shots that I was trying to play this wasn’t really a problem with the 58° because that was more suited to what I would be used to playing however the 52° it defin definitely was an issue initially so of course when you’re hitting those shorter shots around the green the bounce is going to have more of an impact on those shots so when I took the 52° from a little bit further back hitting those full wedge shots maybe around 80 to 90 yards I wasn’t noticing the difference with the added bounce quite so much and I was actually really impressed with this wedge from that distance we were noticing straight away that with those longer shots the ball was checking up to within a couple feet at most which on the link greens was really impressive because it wasn’t as if those greens were super soft and the ball was always going to check up so there was definitely a lot of control that I was really impressed with on those longer shops so because of how much I was struggling around the greens with the 52 Dee we decided to head up to dumani to the practice ground there they have an amazing short game facility so it just meant that I could stand there and experiment a little bit more play different types of shots that worked for that higher B bounce so that I could really get to grips with this club so once I Incorporated that higher bounce and the different type of shots that I needed to play I actually really liked these wedges I felt as though they were very soft and very easy to control off the face as we already found with those longer shots in they’re really easy to check up which meant there was loads of control which is obviously what you want with your wedges it was quite easy to get out of the bunkers which is obviously what you want on those links SC courses with the Deep bunkers and steep faces however something that I did notice was that there wasn’t a massive amount of check up from these out of the bunkers there was just a little bit more roll on the ball coming out from the sand than I would like to see with my wedges when I was at dumbani I also hit a few shots in the bunker just to see if I could get a little bit more spin coming up compared to the old course but to be honest we found exactly the same thing that the ball was coming out of the bunker nicely but it just wasn’t checking up super quickly in terms of data we did also take these wedges onto a trackman at octone to have a look at some of the spin rate and distances that we were coming out with now obviously when you’re looking at wedges you’re not necessarily looking to get huge amounts of distance gains or anything like that so we were just focused on the consistency of the numbers there in terms of spin we were getting really consistent spin rate which of course is what you want to see with your wedges and that also matched up to out on the golf course really seeing the ball check up and have a lot of stopping power which was great and we also saw that with the 52° for example hitting long full shots there was only a couple yards variation in the carry distance so safe to say that both of these wedges were very consistent and very accurate which of course is exactly what you want from your wedges something that I did notice when I was testing these out and experimenting with a few different types of shots at dumbani is that the grips on these wedges are a little bit longer than what you tend to see so just looking at a standard wedge here you can see there’s maybe an inch extra grip on the Ping wedges now what that was great for was being able to grip it down slightly further on the club if you were wanting to play those types of shots where you’re going down the grip and you’re making the club shorter so coming on to an overall verdict for the Ping wedges starting off with looks as I said earlier on I really like the looks of these wedges they’re very clean there is a bit more design in terms of the Ping and the black line going through the back of it then we’d maybe sometimes see with some of the other ping clubs that we’ve come across but overall I think the package that these wedge has come in is very premium feeling and just very clean overall going on to feel my opinion of this definitely changed as we went through the testing process obviously initially I was really struggling to hit these and getting any sort of feel going but once I got used to that extra bounce on the 52 and playing with that in mind I definitely thought that the feel of these wedges was really nice it was very controlled and very easy to stop up quickly around the greens without feeling overly hard at impact so there was really nice soft feel to these wedges in terms of performance the performance was kind of split into two halfes so looking at once I’ve got used to these wedges and become happy with how to use them and how to play them I did feel as the the wedges performed really well especially from around the greens and from hitting those longer pitch shots in I was really really impressed with how quickly they were stopping up and how easy they were to control from around 80 to 90 yards away and then coming on to value for money so these wedges come in with an RRP of £175 so that is definitely pushing the higher price point of what we’ maybe expect to see with wedges now ping were claiming with these wedges that they were going to help gol to see more control hitting into and around the greens and to be honest how I was hitting these and seeing how how quickly and consistently they stopped up every time hitting in with the wedges I would say that you would struggle to find wedges that would perform any better in that category so a little bit more expensive than AI but performed really well so I would say that if you looking for a wedge obviously your wedge game is so personal and so subjective but I would definitely say to give the Ping s159 wedges ago and see how you get on and finally looking at the fitting process that I went through with these wedges now I definitely think that it’s a step in the right direction and a great idea to have that questionnaire to get to know a golfer the type of golf they’re playing and using that information to fit them to wedges that are that bit more personalized to them as a golfer however there’s obviously some limitations there in that you don’t have a real human being stepping in and looking at your game looking at your shot shape and things like that to say actually you might be better off just trying this slight deviation from what the computer is saying might be right for you and for me that’s exactly what happened with ending up with a wedge that had that little bit more bounce on it than I would like to see so it’s not quite perfect but it is definitely better than just any wedge off the shelf thank you guys for watching I hope you’ve enjoyed my review of the Ping s159 wedges let me Are these a new range? What are they replacing?
The cost is ridiculous. Pros mostly get clubs free. The majority of amateur recreational golfers can’t afford prices like this. So their market is rich golfers for whom price is no concern and a tiny minority of middle income players who pay more than they should to show off. Most of us are better off buying clubs, including wedges, that are one, two or even three previous models old and go for half or a third of their initial retail price. These days you’ve got to be a bargain hunter. Not for clubs that are cheap because they are of poor quality, but for the really high quality clubs at steep discounts.
I agree about the logo on the back, they look great.
Excellent review…but, wow, the S159s are pricey. I need to replace my Cleveland CBX2 Gap and SW. I'll put these on my "must try". Thanks.
I've just bought 3 Ping 159 wedges, quite a bit cheaper than RRP. Ping fitter came to club so was able to have a face to face fitting. It has taken me a little time to get used to them, as they feel diff to my old wedges, but the stopping power is terrific and control good, so very happy.
