Mercedes bz of Baton Rouge Studios this is hunt Balmer [Music] welcome in Hunt Palmer coming to you from the Mercedes-Benz of baton rou studio downtown in the capitol city on this Friday it means we’re brought to you by corks caj and fried fish and shrimp Jacob Beck and Cassie spaz back there on the ones and tw’s Preston guy talking LSU football specifically recruiting coming up at 1:5 Sean zand from Fox 8 down in New Orleans the Saints have wrapped mandatory mini camp so a lot of football in the middle of this hour got some basketball recruiting news at the beginning of hour number two we’re actually going to go up to Washington DC and chat with John Kim John covers the Washington commanders who also just wrapped up mandatory mini camp and wrote a story about Jaden Daniels and how he’s progressing in his first off season in the NFL so I thought it was a good time to go up there and chat with John so looking forward to that US Open is underway and men’s College World Series just moments away from commencing up in Omaha Nebraska Jak Quebec they have not thrown a pitch yet in the College World Series so you have the opportunity to select your winner who will it be unfortunately hunt oh no no no not not the Texas A&M no they lost their second best pitcher and their best hitter that’s that can happen it can though I choose not to believe it incorrect pick I will go with the North Carolina Tar Heels made a little bit of recency maybe a little bit of I’m pulling for Virginia that’s actually you know what I shouldn’t say that I’m pulling for NC State for two reasons one they got absolutely screwed in 2021 when they got told at 1:00 in the morning they had to go back to Raleigh because they had covid and they took a team picture at 1 o’clock in the morning on the field all 13 of them that were left they had a pitcher that got three hits in a game I think off Kumar rocker or Jack lighter uh in that and they got sent home and that was a screw job so I’m pulling for them and also I think Elliot Avan is going to retire at the end of this year he really hinted at that in the Super Regional in Athens they were kind of talking about riding off into the sunset and all this kind of stuff so I think this is his last go I’m pulling for them but I’m also pulling for Virginia I like Brian oconor a lot I think they have a really good program and they’re not in the Southeastern Conference so uh I’m pulling for NC State I’m pulling for Virginia Florida state would be a pretty good story as well with link Jarrett going back there but for me I’m picking North Carolina and I’m really hoping that some of that pans out but it’s about to get cranked up over there in Omaha Nebraska we’ll keep you posted as we move on throughout the show uh let’s start today with some baseball news um I can tell you with relative confidence that LSU is busy recruiting the transfer portal this weekend there will be visitors and it will be pretty quiet over there in terms of social media presence my suggestion would be that you will hear some commitment News Sunday Monday Tuesday moving forward I don’t expect anything today I’d be a little surprised if it was tomorrow these visits generally can span a weekend I think I can’t tell you names I don’t know who’s there but I know that LSU is very active and it feels like this weekend you’re going to see some movement I have no information that would suggest that Jacob mayor is part of this recruiting weekend he could be he could not be I have no idea I want to be very clear about that but he’s from Gonzalez went to Santa mall and played at Nicholls and is in the transfer portal and that news came out today so to me I think it’s relevant to at least have the discussion when you’ve got a transfer that is from this area that’s going to be highly coveted because of the talent it’s reasonable to have that discussion but once again let me be abundantly clear I don’t know if LSU is recruiting him or not um it appears he’s grown up an LSU fan that makes a lot of sense being from Gonzalez playing at santal being in the area being a baseball player LSU has been pretty good for his entire life so it would make some sense if he was an LSU fan I’m going to paint you the picture of Jacob Mayers right now and by the way if it’s Myers it’s ma erss if it is Myers somebody in the B for chat let me know got Santa Mall connections or Gonzalez connections I’m going to say mayor it could be Myers either way I’m going to paint you the picture of him and see if he would be a guy that you Joe LSU fan would be interested in you’re talking about a guy as a freshman who was a first team freshman All-American by the NA national collegiate baseball Riders Association D1 baseball baseball America perfect game he was Collegiate baseball’s freshman pitcher of the year he was a collegiate baseball freshman All-American all South Region he was the Southland Conference freshman of the year in the regional against Alabama he actually threw the ball very very well for five and two3 innings in Tuscaloosa he was an all tournament selection in the Tuscaloosa Regional this past year he led the Southland in strikeouts with 106 and opponents only hit 165 off of him I give you all those accolades and I tell you he throws 97 miles an hour and has a very good slider if I stop right there you go H get that guy in the boat he’s from Sant all he grew up an LSU fan he throws 97 he’s first team All-American by everyone as a freshman that guy’s got to be in the mix he led the south in strikeouts that you got to have him but I haven’t given you the entire picture there from the 65 205b right-hander the whole picture would suggest to you that there’s a flaw and it’s a pretty big one this year Jacob mayor in 100 so in 100 and where’s the inning count there it is 70 innings in 70 Innings pitched he walked 76 now let me give you some numbers here the SEC walks leader this year was Mason Moore at Kentucky he so far has walked 51 the ACC leader was from pit Ryan Andre he walked 47 most walks in the Big 12 Owen Bor Kansas state 50 Sun Belt leader Bradley Wilson from Ab State 43 in the American DJ McCracken at Rice walked 52 Jacob Mayers walked 76 he is 24 clear of all of those guys he led the nation in walks and that is hard for me to get past it is so enticing to want that big fast ball and to get those huge strikeout numbers in a really low batting average against and there is no question that his stuff would play in the SEC tomorrow but when you talk about a guy that walked 76 guys this year and last year walked 58 which also would have led all those conferences it’s a scary proposition because in the SEC with these Advanced hitters if you can’t command it you’re going to get behind in counts and you’re not going to get away with the same mistakes that you may have in the south conference to me this is a really hard sell if in fact LSU is involved here it all looks good until you get to the on line item the strikeouts are awesome the Innings pitched is awesome the accolades are awesome the stuff is awesome the measurables are awesome and being from Louisiana is a great plus to throw in there as well those walk numbers are yabahaba frightening and I think I would have a hard time putting him in the boat LSU needs pitching they’ve got to over basically this entire staff holan’s gone jump is gone herd is gone little is gone aten’s gone like most of what you relied on for big leverage outs outside of Gavin gy is moving on so you need a lot of pitchers and this guy’s stuff is awesome I just don’t know if I could do it and and I I’ll be real iffy about that if in fact LSU does it but a lot of coaches have a lot of confidence you say I can take those tools and I can make it work but Nicholls head coach Silva’s a really good pitching mind and he couldn’t figure it out in two years not even close and so I’m I’m I’m questionable on on that the other news of the day for LSU baseball um reports coming out about the major league baseball draft combine that’s taking place and LSU had a lot of current players and commitments that have been invited Jared Jones Griffin Herring Gage jump Luke hulleman Thatcher herd Justin lore Christian little all those guys will be involved in the combine obviously jump hullman herd and little are going to move on I don’t know if there’s a market for Justin Loreen and look Jay Johnson said he’d love to have him back so we’ll see then Jared Jones and Griffin Harring are the two that you’ll see they’re going to go up there and see what they can do the signes attending the combine Connor Griffin and cam CTI are the top of the signing class and you’re not going to get either one of those two guys um they’ll be there William Schmidt is going to go work out that’s the big right-hander from Catholic High Kate Aron Bey Catcher from Texas who is one of the top prep catchers in the country would be a huge get for LSU Boston baitman kale Fountain Cas Evans David hog Ryan uh Michael Ryan Maverick Rizzy all those guys going to be involved in this combine I don’t I know that most of you don’t know all those names and we haven’t quite gotten to that portion of this uh of this calendar where we really start to dive into the draft that’s in July and we’re here in the middle of June but I will tell you this just one one point I’ve kind of pinpointed a guy a little bit down the list in the last two draft classes I really thought it was important for LSU to get to campus and actually both of them have showed up two years ago it was Brady Neil this past year it was Steven milum we know that Neil has had trouble staying on the field with injuries and the production hasn’t been there in the Southeastern Conference and obviously milm was a huge hit and and was great late in the season neither of those guys were at the top of their class in terms of of the draft I’m not begging I mean cam Johnson was was way up at the top of his class and you’ve seen some guys that you know Blake Mitchell last year was a catcher that El was never never going to get I’m not talking about those guys p yeah I’d love to have Conor Griffin show up on campus he’s the number one high school player in the nation that’d be great but I’m I’m not talking I’m talking about kind of down the list where you’re still a draft risk could sign could be a second or third round pick if the right team falls in love but hopeful to get to campus and right now for me it’s not even William Schmidt who is a little bit pie in the sky as well to me it’s Maverick Ry because he’s 69 and he throws really hard and I don’t know if he’s a finished product in fact I know he’s not but the tools are really really good and I think that there’s a chance he could be an early hit plus I like the chance of having Chase Shores and Maverick Rizzy on the team who are both 6’9 and throw really hard that’s a that’s a cool thing to have on the team I haven’t ruled out that Maverick Rizzy could be something like Chase Shores was as a freshman now they’re going to have to refine him a good bit if they get him to campus through fall and into the the spring but right now as I look at this class I mean I would love to get K A and BD to campus um that’s a guy that’s cooled a little bit from a Scouts perspective I would love to get William Schmidt and those guys toward the top of the class mzy to me is a guy that I would I would love for LSU to get and we’ll talk a little bit more about all of that as we move on in the summer our baseball breakdowns all season long have been brought to you by Pluckers we got a lot to get to here in hour number one they’re underway up in Omaha Nebraska uh North Carolina did go with daro the big right-hander who LSU saw in the final game of the regional freshman All-American he will go against Virginia in this opener as they play on from Charles Schwab in the top of the first North Carolina and Virginia getting things going in the College World Series we’ll transition to football for the next half hour Preston guy from tigerbait.com talking a little bit of tiger recruiting when we come listening to the hunt Palmer show brought to you by corks cajun fried fish and shrimp just heard on that promo that Jimmy’s got hany going on vacation this week that had to be a late late planned vacation that’s of like two weeks ago because V she was in Omaha he’d be going to Omaha that’s uh he’s the mayor of Omaha maybe he was just anticipating that unfortunately it wasn’t going to happen God me and Charlie I I ran into him well I didn’t run into him I was going to do the show at the marar that Monday before game three and he couldn’t talk and I couldn’t talk it was just my and he had been there for a week and a half I’d only been there for two days but it’s just as he mentioned like you’re in bars and you’re talking loud and then you go to games and you yell a little bit and like it’s just not a not conducive to the radio man’s voice to be up there in Omaha for an extended period of time probably not good for the bank account either staying in a casino for a week and a half but hoping Charlie enjoys his uh his vacation and certainly will be watching a little bit of the College World Series I’m sitting there looking at that stadium and just the memories from last year just flooding back that was that was a that was a good experience up there in Omaha I hope to do it again sometime very very soon I think LSU work in that transfer portal in an effort to to make that happen next year let’s talk some football Preston guy tiger bait.com is with us on the gyms Firearms hotline Preston how are you you know I bet you Charlie booked that trip before the SEC Championship struggling I I bet you he started sweating a little bit as as he watched him you know kind of get hot at the end of the year but you know I guess it worked out for him lack of Fai paid off I haven’t spoken with Charlie but I do know that a lot of his vacations involve Tommy Bahama shirts and multiple beverages where there’s sand so I’m sure that’s where he’s headed here in in short order uh Preston looks like a couple of LSU commits jabori Antoine and kelen Moses are going to take a visit this weekend elsewhere are you concerned about that well certainly not kelen Moses Jabor antoan a little bit but kelen Moses I’ve talked to him on on a number of occasions he is about as vocally Pro LSU as they come he’s he’s been very handed about his love for LSU uh you know he talked a lot about how you know he feels like his brother kind of regretted going to Alabama uh and we all know that that decision really came down that was the consequence of the you know Les Miles termination so I’m not too too worried about them really I mean players go out and they go take visits that’s what they do over the summer every recruit needs a backup plan you never know if a coach gets fired there’s scandle at a school you need to have schools you’re familiar with so jabori Antoine more worried about the kelin Moses not worried about kin at all so that’s I think you kind of answered my next question but I’d like to unpack it a little bit more as far I mean I’m Pro 17 18 year old kids seeing the country on somebody else’s dime that’s an opportunity that not very many people get so man go get go get it and go do it but if you’re kelen if if you’re a school that’s taking kelen Mosen in on a get keelen Moses in on a visit and he’s been so openly Pro LSU is it feel like a waste of time well not really because I mean it’s the same reason he wants to check you out other than you know but by the way I’ve always thought that University of Hawaii is really missing an opportunity to to get kids coming to their campus just for you know a trip to to Hawaii they’ve got a different policy you have to have an offer I believe to to get them to pay for you to come out there I think that’s the the way that their Sports work because I think a lot of people would do that if that was the case yeah well they’re just missing a chance to at least put their name in front the festar kid true like I’m always shocked when I see that they haven’t taken advantage of that but uh um but you know the same reason that the players is looking into the school is the reason you know that the school is interested in that player because things happen backup options are needed you know LSU might you know lose let’s put it like this when Texas a empired Jimbo Fisher last year I’m sure Gabriel reliford was very happy that he had been familiar with LSU as was Dominic McKinley because you don’t have to go through the recruiting process from scratch you’re you’re familiar with these entities and programs already for sure and then you can hop in the transfer portal after year if things don’t work out at your current spot and that case you kind of know things so that’s that’s that’s a Brave New World here as well uh what kind of player is kelen Moses oh he models himself after Harold Perkins uh he told me that directly right when he committed he’s like yeah they’re talking to me about using me like Harold Perkins you know just all over the field running around but still getting after the quarterback uh and and that is what he he’s not a super big thick linebacker he’s not 65 or anything like that he’s a speed guy so um that’s probably your your best comparison you’re going to get out of them in my opinion Antoine 61 Corner uh comes out of New Iberia that’s obviously plays Cory Wayman pretty familiar with um they got to restock the shells at defensive back how do you think they’re they’re doing on that on that route well they they did a really good job in the 24 class just bringing in a lot of guys no five star guys so to speak but like a lot you know a lot of just really quality players uh you like DeShawn McBride out of Denham Springs and what he can bring kylin Jackson the safety out of Zachary uh you really like he looked really good in the spring game Jawan Johnson Mr Louisiana football who on the offensive side of the ball had the most yards in the lhsaa history so a lot of good players this year they’re really they’re shooting for the fences here man uh this weekend they’re going to bring in uh five star safety uh and they’re bringing in um uh DJ picket last weekend was on campus five star corner so they they’ve got guys all over the place that they’re looking for um and I think Cory Raymond’s getting it Jonah Williams is a safety they’re bringing in this weekend I apologize I had a little Gap there but anyways yeah they’re they’re they’re getting at recruiting at a much higher level than we saw in the first couple years of the Brian Kelly tenure here usually Elite Camp was a big opportunity to get two three four commitments that was in the old recruiting calendar now things have moved up because of the early signing period and whatnot and it feels like the camp is more so geared toward sophomores and juniors is that kind of the sense that you’ve gotten as far as the visitors they’ve had over the last four five six days yeah well the camps definitely are where you’re doing a lot more of evaluation in those those classes and you’re wanting to get those long-term relationships but all these official visits these these are all seniors we’re talking about they’ve got about a dozen official visits and I think almost all of them are fourstar better players this weekend uh I think I think the uh Jonah Williams is your only five-star guy but a lot of quality players so let’s put it like this you’re building a lot of relationships with those 26 and 27 guys but if your 25 guys at the end of summer most of them are making a decision like it it it’s been scooted up now because a lot of these guys are you know they just wrap up their football season season before Signing Day right and they’re ready they want to have that decision made before they start football season so it’s not you know they’re not preparing for a state championship and deciding who they’re going to go play football for the next day although players do do that this is really crunch time the next two three months that that’s where the coaches are focused on getting their 20 25 class together the name that popped for me in this uh in this visitor list that I saw and it’s not because of I know how good a player he is I just remember his dad Chuck wy’s son CJ Wy a four-star wide receiver from Georgia is in town this weekend so LSU Legacy they’re trying to pull in there uh you saw some game times that came out and it looks like LSU is going to play a lot of games at night inside Tiger Stadium now that the the the tug award between CBS and ESPN is over fighting for who gets what do you expect to see LSU play the vast vast majority of their games at home at night moving forward in this television contract well hun I don’t have it right in front of me but I believe what I was three games are are for sure at night and five are in that 237 Flex slot did I get that right yes you did okay okay so let’s put it like this if you go over on those Flex slots and they’re all 230 they you G have some grumpy LSU fans I mean real grumpy but um probably not as grumpy as people renaming their conference the All State 12 but but still not happy um so it just depends on where the cookie crumbles i’ I’d say that for ESPN it’s not as big of a deal for them because regardless of whether it’s a 2:30 or uh a 7 o’clock start for them they’re they’re still getting the game there’re they’re not trying to put on a TV show afterward you know they’re not trying to put How I Met Your Mother on right afterward like CBS is so and they’re not like you know CBS is really structured we get one game that’s it we get one double header a year there’s that flexibility uh with the SPN so if you’re asking me I would say uh B unless there’s some environmental games that would cause people not to watch it or whatever uh who cares if you can go either one I would say probably LSU will end up with more nighttime games because they want to show off Saturday night in Death Valley exactly I don’t I my contention is and I’ll this we’ll have to see we’ll prove it itself out over time now because CBS if they won a Tiger Stadium and they didn’t have their one night game like they were going to have to take it at 2:30 that’s not the case forn and there are so many great options great venues great matchups bringing Oklahoma and Texas in that if if you’re going to pick one and one and you got one game at 2:30 and one at 7 o’clock and the Tiger Stadium can be at 7 o’clock and then you can go to A&M or Oklahoma or Florida or Georgia or Tennessee or B or Auburn at 230 where they don’t care well you might as well do that I I just think it makes the decision really really easy and my expectation is that LSU is rarely going to play in the afternoon or morning in in in Tiger stadium now that the tuger war between CBS and ESPN is over that’s just I’m just using deductive reasoning there yeah and and and I’d say the bigger win is as much as LSU doesn’t like that 230 slot they hate an 11: a kickoff host game show host kind of likes it yeah hold up I enjoy an 11 a.m. kickoff because my postgame show ends at like four o’clock speaking my language what you want to do babe we got Saturday night or I can go watch football that isn’t Pack 12 after dark for once you know although that’s that’s a thing of the past now but um you know it is fun for the media people we all eat it up but I I know LSU fan oh they hate it but you only got one and that’s at South Carolina this year and you’d rather it be a road game at 11: am than a home game for sure but lsj has actually done pretty well in those SEC Road games at 11:00 am but I just don’t think the fans like waking up early and knocking it out first thing I would agree with that have a great weekend Preston we appreciate it all right see you soon on Preston guy tigerbait.com for all your LSU recruiting and football needs you can find it over there at tigerbait you can check them out on YouTube as well he and Mike Scarboro do a heck of a job all right uh looks like we’re scoreless through a half an inning up there in Omaha it’s North Carolina left sorry Virginia of it and join us now on the gims Firearms hotline John Sean thanks for the time how are you I’m doing great how are you doing quite well uh what was your reaction to Alvin cra’s departure yesterday yeah I was kind of out of left field it was an EXT ention um or contract dispute that really none of us saw coming just because generally with a higher profile player like that um you thought something would have leaked at some point you look at some of the higher profile contract issues around the league right now with man cam going on um and then sort of the know he he wasn’t here for OTAs and he shows up from Min camp and had a had a really good practice on Wednesday and then all of a sudden you know he exits the building and in the parking lot where we’re all parked and where we’re all kind of set up to go out there for the uh for for the for practice on Thursday so to see him kind of exit get in the car and then leave right in front of us uh was certainly something to uh certainly was a an interesting scene play out um and then now um the Saints go into an offseason with with one of their star players not happy with his contract and it obviously puts the Saints in a delicate situation and Alvin C is obviously uh trying to you know exercise whatever leverage he has left because he’s you know turned 29 years old and looking to secure you know one final payday or one you know of Financial Security so um this is an issue that I I I think uh kind of caught a few people off guard uh but it’s one we’ll be paying a lot of attention to the next couple weeks and months to the best of your understanding was this just kind of a show by chra and his team or was there some sort of dispute yesterday that kind of boiled over and he said all right then I’m out of here yeah that’s that’s a great question um because he was available at walkthr um because everyone saw him at walkthr and in the team meetings earlier certainly felt like he had the plan to go out and practice at some point um at some point between that walkthrough and the actual start of practice he re-entered the building had some kind of discussion apparently or some kind of who when he got inside the building and what actually happened there is anyone’s guess or unknown at this point and then obviously he leaves and pretty calculated move I guess you could say on his part but um I I don’t know I mean I’m not really sure where if it’s more of a just a kind of a move by Camaro if it’s something that really frustrated him with kind of conversation but I do know he’s a guy that wants an extension or some kind of guaranteed money going forward and uh as of now he doesn’t have it and we’ll see how the Saints react at some point yeah I guess that’s the next question I mean do you expect a hold out here if nothing happens in in training camp I could see that happening if it if it the gets to that point uh just in terms of where they currently stand and you know the negotiations and what he’s looking for and you know the Christian mcaffrey recent extension didn’t play any any role in this uh because he just signed that two-year $ 38 million extension with the 49ers and he’s the one you know obviously CRA has been most compared to throughout his career although can all honestly say over the last couple seasons mcaffry has certainly had uh better Seasons than than then Cera um so yeah I can certainly see that leaking into the off season or excuse me into training camp once we go out west to California if they aren’t able to settle in on a number um he held out for about four or five practices back in 2020 when they were working out the contract he’s currently under um and it should be point out he’s still under contract for 2025 but it’s a it’s one of those contracts where um when he signed the deal back in 2020 it was listed as a 5e $75 million contract but it was really four years 50 million that final year had a 25 million dollar base salary that was unguaranteed it was always designed to get renegotiated at some point so we’ll see um and I look I know Mickey Lumis can be a painfully patient negotiator I’m not sure how he’s going to react to this sort of scene here where um you know I I haven’t I can’t tell you the last time that’s ever happened if at all a player walking out of the building like that over a contract right before practice and we were all there that kind of see it but uh we’ll see how they react and then uh generally speaking he takes his time with this negotiation and they they settle in at market value just a matter of what that market value truly is for a guy like CER who like I said is going to be 29 years old uh next month would you pay Alvin CRA 8 to10 million in his 29 30 31 seasons 8 to 10 million yeah um maybe um maybe for next year I don’t know if I would guarantee it how much I would guarantee of that just because of the where he’s at in his career and and his age I do know there’s a little bit of an excitement of a potential kind of reinvigorating his career a little bit with this new system and uh Clint kubak and featuring him in different ways um I wouldn’t go past the age of 30 with him uh any anything past that to me would not be a smart business move uh if you’re the same so it really boils down to what do they want to do in 2025 U 2024 is obviously one thing but 2025 uh is he do they feel that he’s passed his Prime at too old or is that a year is that a you know a year where they can give him more guaranteed money that’s a very delicate situation that’s a very delicate balance um and I’ll be very curious to see how the Saints play it out I don’t I don’t know um depending on their cap situation and generally you know they’ve been caught over these last couple years holding on to players a little bit past their Prime I’d be very careful to give a lot more guaranteed money past next season would this be an easier decision to make if you had seen any of kendre Miller last year I mean what do we know about him yeah possibly uh I they’re excited about him um I think they they like his his skill set within the offense um yeah I think it certainly could be because right now behind Alvin CRA you have a bunch of unknowns you have Jamal Williams didn’t doing anything last year although he’s seems to be happy about the new system we’ll see um kendre Miller is a guy they drafted to be you know someone that can come in and be a guy that can you know uh carry the football for him significantly and take some of the load off of Alvin chra didn’t see that so I I certainly think that’s that’s part of the play when it comes to Alvin cerra and exercising that leverages who else do you have that you can legitimately count on and I think that is a question mark so yeah that’s why it puts him in a really precarious situation Sean Fan’s Our Guest Fox8 down in New Orleans talking Saints mini camp as they wrapped things up yesterday we won’t see them on the field again until training camp Camp uh the new system’s kind of been all the rage and every all everybody’s talking about and saw some positive reviews from Derek Carr even though we know it’s just just mini camp it was your impression of just kind of watching the offense from what you could see totally different um you know I’ve been watching the same offense for a long time um and you know you kind of expect certain things when you look at the way they even do warm-ups and drills uh before they actually get to work it’s just it just looks totally different just even from the the routes on air that they practiced it’s totally different um a lot more Zone scheme wide Zone scheme lot more bootleg uh stretch boot action u a lot more of everything looks the same uh but you you can do a lot of different plays out of the same formation and it it seems to have connected with Derek Carr at least initials because I think you could certainly make a case for the practices that we were able to witness um I think Derek Carr is been the best player on the field for the Saints most consistent player over a six you know six practice stretch everyone understands June and even Derek understands it’s June he was pretty open about that yesterday um but you know at this stage of the game he looks pretty comfortable within the system and um it’s still a long way to go they Haven put the pads on and I’m still not sure uh where that offensive Line’s headed in terms of if the the right five guys are in place right now but uh at least initially it looks like the starting quarterback has picked up on the terminology and the execution fairly well as you mentioned no pads so it’s impossible to evaluate lineman at all so I just ask you kind about rep count any reps at all for fuang on the right side any reps at all for Penning on the left side or they anchored those two guys down for the time being it’s been all right for Trevor Penning it’s been all left for teste fuaga and they’ve remained that way for the entirety of the off season and we’ll see if it remains that way once the PS come on into training camp because that’s obviously something that has to come together quickly but the Saints for this offense this new look offense that everyone’s excited about means nothing if the offensive line doesn’t come together last thing here tight end obviously a huge part of the San Francisco offense that we’ve seen the last couple years with Clint kubak out there the Saints have unique skill set at tight end with Hill and Jaan Johnson and F Moro how big a deal is the is the is the is the injury there I think it is a big deal and especially since it seems to be sort of kind of a vagueness around what actually happened because if if you kind of listen to Dennis Allen he he says it didn’t necessarily happen you know during a practice he said it’s just been bothering him for quite some time um so kind of get to this point and now have surgery and where you’re not going to be available potentially till the start of the regular season I think that’s certainly a blow uh to the development and just sort of the installation of this offense and you look at this offense there’s a lot of two tight end sets there’s a lot of 21 a lot of 12 lot of 22 Personnel uh within this offense they in in the way they operate with the bootleg that tight end drag across the middle It’s very effective play uh within this offense it’s one of the the bread and butter type plays so I do think it’s significant uh I’m very curious to see if they look the veteran rout for a tight end I know that Market’s pretty slim right now but uh there are some young guys that they like that have certainly um had a couple of uh good practices within this off season and um maybe they go that route for the time being but I know that that position is way too important to this offense in particular to just ignore so we’ll see what happens there but I do think it’s a significant injury for Jaan Johnson Johan thanks so much for your time have a great weekend man all right but appreciate it Sean fisan Fox8 down in New Orleans covering the black and gold you’re looking for information on basketball recruiting news here in this final segment I told you earlier this week that LSU was going to get a a visit from the number one player in the transfer portal Coleman Hawkins he was a a four five player from Illinois he averaged about 13 points and six rebounds really shot the three well for them was at the NBA draft combine decided to pull out put him name in the transfer portal and he’s the one if you recall earlier this week I said there was a clip of him from that combine saying that he wanted to go somewhere not in the Big 10 not in the Big East he wanted to go somewhere where he could enjoy a football game and I was going well we got you covered Coleman come on down for a visit we’ll light up Tiger Stadium we’ll do the whole thing it’ll be it’ll be pretty impressive well not impressive enough because I do believe that Coleman Hawkins probably likes football based on that answer like that’s probably true and I’m confident that if Coleman Hawkins came down here he would love Tiger Stadium I just think he likes $2 million more than that and that is reportedly the nil deal that he got in the transfer portal now this is a guy who might have been a second round pick might have made an NBA roster but certainly could dump his name to the transfer portal and he got $2 million for it he wasn’t even the best player on Illinois’s team last year2 million that is what the market is dictating right now now I’ve said for a long time that I think that’s could cool down over time but Kansas State jumps in and he has canceled his visit to Baton Rouge and committed to Kansas State because of that nil deal I looked up the NBA rookie minimum it’s $985,000 he is doubling the NBA rookie Min minimum in the Big 12 which could be I guess the All State 12 at this point that is quite impressive and I just don’t know well I’m confident in saying that LSU is not going to match $2 million for just about anybody in a basketball bidding war like that just doesn’t appear that it’s going to happen Coleman Hawkins in my opinion would have been the best player in LSU’s team in my opinion would have pushed LSU probably in the top five or six in the SEC I was really excited about the prospects of this I had no idea how good LSU’s path to landingham was I know that they’ve got a big football stadium and he said he liked that and he know that he had scheduled a visit and I was hopeful things could happen but when Kansas State little the little apple Flex in big money goes out $2 million LSU is probably going to be on the outside looking in at that no matter what so now I’m pretty comfortable telling you that it feels like LSU’s basketball roster for the 2024 2025 season is about complete I guess there’s a chance that there’s someone else out there but LSU’s down one scholarship from self-imposed sanctions so it feels like this is this is the roster that LSU is going to move forward with I still think it’s pretty good I they still still think they got a real chance to make the NCAA tournament this year but I would have liked to have Coleman Hawkins not going to get him because he’s getting to Millie from Kansas State that’s it for hour number the weekend hopefully your work week is in the rear view mirror we got one more hour to hang out with you of course it was a long time here in Baton Rouge we were looking at some pretty poor quarterback play and then a guy named burrow showed up and L college football on fire and was the first pick in the draft and got to the Super Bowl in year two and we said we’ll never see that again and then a couple years later Jaden Daniels showed up and just about replicated that from an offensive perspective and now he’ll start his professional career in Washington as the second pick in the draft up at the espn.com right now story titled commanders Jaden Daniels I ain’t a Star Quarterback yet the author of that piece John Kim who covers the commanders for ESPN he joins us now on the gyms Firearms hotline John how are you thanks for the time I’m doing well how are you doing quite well um let’s go back to to draft time obviously the quarterbacks were going to be the first three picks coming off the board and you had a feeling that the Bears were going to go with Caleb Williams and Washington was sitting there at number two what was the feeling entering the draft about where they would go Feeling by who by the by the organization or by Outsiders outside you can’t really know what they’re doing in the boardroom but what did the fan base and the Talking Heads kind of think so I think there I think by that point I think more people would would have said Jaden Daniels I think there was definitely an element of a fan base that was looking at Drake May um I know internally it was Jaden Daniels period and it was um uh it it was not Drake May number two understood well that’s and that’s the way that it that it went and so now Jaden Daniels has had his first start to an offseason as as the quarterback up there in in Washington what have your impressions been of the rookie quarterback so everything has been really good so far and you know you always stress like okay there’s a long way to go we get that it’s just they were they were not pads yet um they haven’t played a game they haven’t seen an opposing defense Etc but everything you hear about him I think the people at lcu would say oh yeah well this is who he is he gets to the facility at 5:45 every day and and works out watches film he he’s prepared when he’s on the field he doesn’t look lost he doesn’t there’s not a like I’ve seen a lot of I’ve seen other rookie quarterbacks here come through and they’re hesitant they maybe they run more at seven on seven than they should because they because they’re not sure where to go with the ball um that’s not him and so like you see I think um Dan Quinn said it that you see like a veteran savviness to him with a rookie humility I think it’s a good way to describe it that um you know he’s engaging with teammates he’ll he’ll pick the brain of guys like Bobby Wagner and and also guys who are backup safeties but if they have experien he feel they can learn from them so like there’s a lot of things like that that go on that I think his approach is really good but it’s why he became what he did in college and I think he’s just continuing what he built at LSU and again don’t know where it’s going to go but the early signs were really good it’s interesting and I don’t know if it’s it’s a harbinger things to come because Joe burrow and uh Joe burrow was a graduate of of Ohio State and then came and he was basically just a football player here and then jayen Daniels had the covid year so he was a graduate by the time he was winning a Heisman Trophy and those guys didn’t really have to worry about school they were basically professionals they last year in college and and so we’ve seen a lot of that from Jaden Daniels and the progression he made from his his his first year at LSU to his second was was startling and it was fantastic to watch I’m curious um his role as a leader as a rookie is that something that they’ll ask of him they’re they’re in fact trying to kind of reduce that a little bit and let it come naturally because you can’t you don’t I don’t feel that he has that personality that is just gonna like he’s not to grab you by the face mask guy he but where he excels I think is is the subtleties of leadership and just being an engaging personality and getting to know different guys and um you know um like someone was telling me that he go down to the when he goes down to the lunchroom he’ll some days he’ll sit at one table next day he’ll sit at another one just to mix around with different guys that’s how he’s going to be a leader right now and let it grow naturally but the reason why they have guys like Bobby Wagner here Zack her Austin Eckler is because they wanted more veteran voices around him um whether on in the in the Huddle or in the room just to kind of negate the need for him to become that leader and that you know and I think like I said they want to develop organically um and the same with like they don’t they’re not trying to make them the face in the franchise either if Dan Snider was still own owning the team he’d have been he’d have Billboards for him in in this area um not not with this group they’re trying to reduce some of that responsibility and pressure on him and let him be a rookie quarterback who has a lot to learn it’s like you’re reading off my notes my my next question to ask is is there a different feeling around the organization with the ownership change because we know from afar things looked really really bad there for a long time is it different um I don’t know that I could say exact I don’t think I could accurately say how dramatically different it is other than it’s dramatically different so you have little things yesterday they had the cafeteria workers they told them to stop cooking and come out to watch practice like it’s a little thing but it’s like it it made that group feel all appreciated and you know other for something other than just say hey you cook food that never would have happened here before um and that’s that’s not just an ownership thing too that’s that’s a Dan Quinn thing but I do think like it permeates throughout the building where people on the past you know the workers here did not feel appreciated or or um certainly felt underpaid and underappreciated so I think from that standpoint over on the building that’s different it’s still I would still call it an organization that has a ways to go to get to where they want it you know you don’t I don’t think you you don’t solve everything overnight and and when they came in they knew that there was other work to be done too so but it’s it’s very different and the J Snider was just not um a good guy as people may have heard and and it just it it just sets up set set such a bad tone for the franchise Josh Harris is different think he gets guys in there and lets them do their job he’s very he’s involved he’s demanding but but that’s that’s where it ends I’m curious obviously you’ve got a a a uber productive Uber athletic Heisman Trophy winner who’s the second pick in the draft the comparisons to Robert Griffin at the same organization feel inevitable is is that something that you’re they’re trying to guard against up there well I don’t know that like because it’s it’s a different group I don’t think like nobody there has done anything with that or talked about it but I do think there are lessons to be learned from there and when Robert was here the way the owner befriended him it it really kind of set a bad tone for for his tenure here but I would say as someone who covered both Daniels is is very different from Griffin the similarities end with number two pick Heisman Trophy winner he’s a he’s a better passer coming out um I also think that the stuff that he prioritizes as far as his work I would just say are different and I think it’s more conducive to long-term success and building and he’s also considered more of a pastor who runs versus I think Griffin was a guy was not as advanced as a passor as Daniels and that’s something that that flipped from his first year at LSU to his second year at LSU he he relied on his legs a lot less and it was ridiculously productive here right in Baton Rouge last question here John we appreciate your time here on this Friday um what does the overall Talent on that roster look like in comparison with with the NFC east and and how what are the expectations early on in Jaden’s career for the team yeah I think that’s that’s where there’s a lot more work to be done and what you don’t know from an from my standpoint is the difference that coaching is going to make for this roster because when you just look at this the talent on the roster well it’s not overly impress iive I think you know you I think what they’re doing here is building for long term for the first time in a long time and um so this I think if they wanted an instant instant overnight turnaround they could have gone and spent differ free agency but they did not they got guys who some names but not not like primary or not premium Talent right um so the roster I think still needs work there are questions about the off off of line you don’t know like okay they have Terry mccor at receiver but do they have enough after that I think there are questions about that so I think that’s a work in progress and I do know that they’re trying to offset some the pressure on him by building a stronger defense some questions there about how good they’ll be and then also a really good run game but again we have to with the offensive line they’re going to have three new starters so how long does it take to mesh so I think there are questions about that um but I think the draft class has been well deceived and it’s the first step so there’s a long way to go in this process for for him and for the team if you get the quarterback right a lot of that tends to work itself out we’ll see if Jaden Daniels can uh can make it work up there in Washington John K got a piece up at espn.com about Jaden Daniels I ain’t a quart Star Quarterback yet we’ll see how quickly that happens and and I I’ll say this I have another one coming Monday that’s about the first impressions by the team of him and a lot more insight and detail into his first spring here awesome we’ll be reading over on espn.com John Kim covers the commanders for ESPN joining us here on the gyms Firearms Highline have a great weekend thanks so much for your time John thank you you too my pleasure Matt gives me a lot of grief M about about pulling for the Bengals we all know that he uh he he roasted me pretty good on the draft show on YouTube back when I was uh cheering the Bengals pick so when you getting Commander gear I don’t have any Commander gear I got one Bingle shirt um but I I I will be pulling for Washington when Jaden’s out there uh those Heisman quarterbacks are are fun to watch and follow and you know I’m not addicted to the Saints like all of you are certainly watching cover but I I can flip over and watch some other things on my Sundays as well and hopefully Jaden uh Jaden has has a quality Supporting Cast around him and he experiences some of success that Joe burrow has early in his career when look Cincinnati was lost in the desert and they got that right and things tended to work themselves out Washington hadn’t had it figured out in a long time we’ll see if this uh if this is it we appreciate John for a little bit of time here on this Friday take a time out come back Day to all the dads out there um should be a good weekend down here in south Louisiana I’m deciding if I’m going to play golf or watch golf on Sunday back do you have a thought on that well you can always uh pull it up on your phone you know I could and also if you’re playing early then you shouldn’t have to worry about it that option’s not there the invite was for 1:30 so if I go play golf I’m going to play like exactly in the window of the leaders of the US Open yep so um I yeah I think I think I would I think I would go out and and just have it up on the phone you know and be able to watch the the ending there we’ll see what happens some incredible stats here uh from Justin Ray if y’all don’t follow if you’re a golf fan you don’t follow Justin Ray you’re missing some some really really good stats he’s crazy with what he can pull out um and this is one that you would never think of because it’s not something that would be on the front of the leaderboard but Sam be though who you would never know and I certainly don’t know either um improved 17 shots from yesterday to today so if you’re one of those people who plays golf casually and one day go out there and you just can’t hit it on the planet can’t finish a hole losing all your golf balls it’s just a disaster and then you come out the next day and you really play really good that happens and you’re like the pros are so consistent that doesn’t happen to them well Sam Barstow would disagree he uh he fired a Sol a solid little 67 today to back up an 84 as a pro I mean if that doesn’t make you feel good just even the pros don’t have it some days and it can come back in one day back just like you some days you don’t have it some days you go out there and you’re just a stripe show yeah it’s uh it’s just a microcosm of uh of the game of golf isn’t it I mean it’s it it doesn’t matter what level you are whether or not you’re a professional or you’re a hacker there’s going to be days where you you can’t hit the ball and there’s going to be days where you can’t not hit it perfectly it’s just uh it’s just a finicky sport man I’ve had so I had like one of my best rounds of golf I ever played was at Pebble Beach which was an incredible experience I was also on a golf trip at stream song which is just fabulous and we were there as a group of 12 of us that were there we were playing a match play style deal couldn’t get a driver Airborne had to switch I was hitting a four iron off the te at stream song so some days you have it some days you got absolutely nothing Scotty Sheffer had absolutely nothing today and he’s the best player in the world his third round as a PGA Tour Professional without a birdie three times he’s done that in his career as a professional golfer shot of 74 he’s very much on the outside looking into the cut line it could back up to him but may not he lost 3.3 Strokes on the greens today that was his worst putting round by uh by that metric all season long surprised Scotty’s on the outside looking in well I I don’t know how you couldn’t be I mean like we talked about before the tournament it would it would almost be uh not smart to not pick him to win this tournament considering he just won last week he’s won five times already this season so it just uh yeah obviously it’s completely uh shocking but before he started to heat up this season he was struggling with the Putter and so once he figured that out everyone knew he was going to be a problem and now it seems like maybe those problems have creep back up but I mean you can’t fault him for shooting 74 because this this course is playing extremely difficult and and I think we talked about earlier haki matama shot 4 under that might be the low round today it may be one of the low rounds of of the tournament I’ve got a stat on hii he shot four under with no Bogies Y and he hit less than 10 greens he missed half the greens and went bogey free he got up and down every time and did not make a bogey in shot four underpar that’s only happened twice in the US Open in the last 30 years Fred Funk did it in 2004 Hideki did it today and he’s not thought of as a guy that’s great with the the chipping or the putting and he he had it go today it’s just just a crazy deal speaking of putting this is a common misconception that Bryson Des Shambo is really good at golf because he hits it a country mile which that helps but when he won the US Open he won the US Open when he was all beefed up and hit in a mile he also led the field in putting that week and he’s a brilliant Putter and no one pays any attention to it because it’s not as cool to watch this is a stat that I think separates the pros from the amers even more than anything because it’s so ridiculous feet of putts made think of how many rounds you play where you never make one from 8 ft and you tap in all day and you make 20 feet of putts he made 129 feet of putts today and he shot one under yeah but I mean that’s just it is pretty astounding is ridiculous like I I this is this is a stat I talk about with my friends all the time I never tally it up but there’s just so many days where like you have a lot of eight Footers for par a lot of 10f Footers for par and you never make any of them and you just tap in all gimmies tap in tap in tap in no Bryson basically made 130 feet of putts today just he made 76 more today than he did yesterday which was which was absolutely remarkable um your thoughts on the golf course as you’ve watched for a couple of days yeah I I think it’s I think it’s perfectly perfectly shaped to to fit a US Open I don’t think it’s too hard where we saw like a shinok Hills re you know a couple years ago where the guys were just complaining because you couldn’t hold anything the the GRE water and the greens between groups that’s there’s no need for that right so I I think so far it’s shown that it’s been a perfect challenge there’s hardly been any kind of guy there’s not not been any guys going out there shooting you know 63 64 I mean Rory shot 65 yesterday turned around shot 72 today and and it it’s it’s playing really tough there’s only I think there’s only so far there’s only been two or three holes playing under par then two of them are the par fives obviously but other than that all the other all the other holes are playing Pretty Tough not a lot of birdies out there so I think it’s the the prime US Open challenge there aren’t a lot of courses that can do this but this is proven out to be fact as you’ve looked at golf over the last 10 years the way to challenge PGA Tour players is not by making it 7,800 yards with spinach Ruff that is not they don’t care they will hit at 3:30 they will gouge it out with an eight iron they will chip up and they will make putts all day and if it’s receptive and soft they’ll fire six irons at pins all day the only way to challenge these guys which they are and they don’t there’s no rough at Piner there’s that um what’s it they’re call wire grass all the wire grass there’s no rough the only way to challenge these guys is to play it firm fast and hard so that the greens don’t hold very well now I’m just looking up there and I got I don’t see who it was but just stuffed it in there you can some holes with some shots but the only way is to get the ball on the ground and get it moving and you got to and it’s hard to get that if rains you can’t do it so that’s a that’s a bummer but Pinehurst has been dry and hot and this is challenging them there’s been a lot of folks on Twitter who have talked about how unfair it is when guys hit shots up there and it stops 15 feet from the hole and then rolls off the green you’re going oh it’s so unfair like that’s they hit a good shot and it it they’re screwed and I’m like wait a second it’s not a good shot every guy on on that course from the amateur who have qualified to Scotty Sheffer number one in the world has a caddy the caddy has the book that has all the yardages and all the greens and they know where you will hit it and it will roll off the green and there was a shot yesterday that went up there and stopped I don’t even see who hit it it stopped like 12et from the hole and then started rolling back and rolled all the way down away and I’m telling you before he hit that shot he knew if I hit it left of that pin it’s going to roll off the green so if you know then it’s not too hard and it’s not unfair fair just because it looks like he hit a good shot that rolled off doesn’t mean that I feel like I’m getting a little preachy on this but like I saw multiple people on Twitter like see this is not fair like one of them was a golf was a basketball Rider Andy glockner was like this is just a gimmick like no he knows that this is a turtleback green and you better hit it to the middle or else it’s going to roll off and it did and You’ got to watch yourself putting earlier Rory got above the hole and he putted it too far and he puted it off the green and then of course he made the chip coming back cuz they’re really good and they they can that and he made a par but like I just I got a little cranky with that on Twitter with people going this is not fair the ball shouldn’t roll off when you hit a good shot I promise that’s not a good shot he pulled it didn’t want to hit it there and it he got punished for it to the uninitiated Pinehurst it it the greens are not small the most of the greens are pretty large however there’s not that much area on the green that is truly playable in the sense of as you’re saying pable and pinable you’ve got to hit it in the right section of the green because most of the green if you hit it anywhere close to the it will roll off so it does make sense that there are people watching and they’re like why is this happening they’re hitting it on the green sometimes in the middle of the green it’s rolling off that’s just the way that that the the green Contours are are designed on this course and so it’s it’s a true challenge even even for these guys so that’s that’s why I think so far we we’ve seen a lot of guys struggling to to hold uh whole greens kley oberg and Pavone all tied at five underpar right now what do you think the winning score is going to be okay okay actually I I just seeing can’t lay an oer now six under okay I that updated on here yep so so yeah so six leads right now and we’ve got uh we’ve got 17 guys under par right now okay I I think I think six I think I said earlier I think five wins it I don’t know that that’s it seems like it’s going to have to be at least six now because somebody’s going to go out there and shoot 68 667 at least tomorrow or Sunday so I would assume that it’s probably going to be I don’t know about the wind I don’t know if the wind’s going to pick up this weekend or not but I would assume that it’s probably still going to be as tough if not harder because the greens are just going to be getting harder the weekend goes they’re going to set it up harder on the weekend and one because you want to do that for a proper US Open test the second piece is you’ve got so many guys playing on Thursday and Friday including amers and qualifiers like you’ve literally got like firemen out there playing who qualified for the US Open now they’re plus four handicaps but I mean you’ve got amateur golfers out there and if you dial this thing up big time on Thursday and Friday you’re not going to finish you’re going to send half the field home tonight and then they can do kind of whatever they want if you get wind that’s great they can do whatever they want rolling with the with the with the greens and get them get them dialed up and crispy you’re going to see the greens get shinier you’re going to see the greens speed up and I think um you’re going to see some some some higher scores on the weekend you’ve got the lead at six right now I’ll say the I’ll say six will win I think somebody can hold the line or somebody like Bryson or Rory um maybe T Hatton I don’t know Xander’s got enough gas in the tank but if I tell you that six is is going to win like to to shoot six under like Xander’s gonna have to shoot five under on the weekend T hatton’s gonna have to shoot five under on the weekend very hard like that’s going to be really really difficult to do and in that case it feels like there aren’t that many guys that can go get it now everybody starts backing up and you know two of these guys at the top shoot 76 tomorrow and back all the way up all of a sudden you bring a lot of guys into it but it’s it’s not easy to chase uh when you can’t make a lot of of birdies so I think the course has been fantastic I would personally rather watch this than watch what we saw at valala where they shot 20 under um but they’re really good and they’ve got that course right exactly where they want it so L goerg at six under par now two under on his day so that’s thought on the US Open up there at Pinehurst get you caught up on the College World Series when we come back on the hunt Palmer show you are now listening to the hunt Palmer show one bath and closets one bathand closets.com is the Rouge you’re listening to the hunt Palmer show brought to you by corks caj and fried fish and shrimp they are underway the greatest show on dirt it is the College World Series up at Charles Schwab field in Omaha Nebraska all ACC Affair in the afternoon slate it is North Carolina and Virginia in the opener as we mentioned North Carolina starting deare her the Freshman sensation he is back out on the mountain for his fifth inning of work he’s worked four Innings of one-run baseball he’s got six strikeouts and three walks against Virginia game is tied at one as they play in the top of the fifth inning um my pick to win it all earlier today was was North Carolina Beck foolishly took the Texas A&M Aggies who don’t have their best hitter and their second best pitcher yeah they’re still good though I think they are and it makes me sad and I need them to be out quickly I hope they are out quickest they can be out is Monday I need them out on Monday if we can possibly make that happen the night game tonight is a very interesting one it’s Florida State and Tennessee and Tennessee is going to do what they have been doing for a little while now they’re going to start Chris Stamos their opener and he’s gotten knocked around a little bit it hasn’t been great and they’re only trying to get three four five outs out of him and then they usually turn it over to AJ Cy I don’t know why they don’t just start him but I guess they start they tried that earli in the year it didn’t go as well as they thought so they’re not going to do it Florida state is going to throw it face Jamie Arnold the sophomore left-hander um and Florida state is is quite a story because you know that Mike Martin had such an unbelievable program there his final year was the year they came to to Baton Rouge for the super and walked LSU off in game two um and unfortunately we lost Mike Martin earlier this year and the program kind of fell off a cliff with Mike Martin Jr at the helm but they hired link Jarrett and he’s come in and revitalized that thing and he did an awesome job at Notre Dame and now he’s doing a fantastic job at Florida State they’re very very good they scored a ton of runs in the super and my hope is that they can score a ton of runs tonight on Tennessee it feels a little bit Eerie that this is the 25th year that the one seed hasn’t won is that the year that it finally happens eventually the number one seed is going to win that’s going to happen at some point it feels like maybe this is that time but Tennessee concerns me because they don’t have a dude I mean how much easier was it for LSU to get through the College World Series last year when you could throw Paul schemes out there in two games and feel relatively certain that you were going to win it I know that Rett louder matched him pitch for pitch in that elimination game but I mean that’s just such a big deal and I’m not asking teams to have Paul SK but I’m asking him to have Alex Lang or Aaron Nola or Anthony ronado or you know Brett louder I’m asking you to have an ace if you’re at that level Florida State’s got a really good one Tennessee does not so we’ll see if they can make up for that with the fact that they’re just absurd on the offensive side of the baseball so that’ll be that’ll be night game tomorrow in the afternoon you’ll see NC State and Kentucky um that’s also a pair of teams that don’t necessarily have a True Ace um but they’ve been really good baseball teams white hot as of late ky’s really been good all year long and NC State’s been really really hot lately and as I talked about at the beginning of the show today when I said I was going to talk a little College World Series in the second hour um I’m I’m there’s part of me pulling from for NC State because of the the screw job they got a couple years ago with the co deal where they got told at 1:00 in the morning they couldn’t play anymore and and had to go home they took a team picture at 1:00 a.m. on the field there’s a crazy like kind of grainy off to the side picture which was the last time that team was together Elliot Avance had some really good teams that one was really good they had gone to fville and knocked out the number one overall seed in that tournament which was Arkansas they were playing great had a chance he had a team that had Trey Turner and Carlos rodon on it in 2013 they were in LSU’s bracket and ended up getting eliminated in in that one by UCLA but they’ve been really good and I think this is Elliot avans last year he’s kind of hinted at that um and then Nick benone got Kentucky in Omaha for the first time I’m curious what kind of crowd Kentucky draws in over Hall we know if their basketball team was playing in Zimbabwe they’d all be there I’m curious if their baseball team makes its maiden voyage to Omaha if big blue nation’s going to show up there or or not that’s going to be an interesting game tomorrow afternoon and then the night cap we all know very very well Texas A&M and Florida I have not seen I looked in the break there with Nick dori’s Twitter and I have not seen who Florida is going to start in this game they’re going to start fiser they’re going to start kags I’m not sure what they’re going to do um A&M will Thro Ryan Prager I feel very confident in that the Aggies are down Shane sedo who’s their number two starter they are down um Braden Montgomery however as I’ve talked about now for two weeks with this A&M team their best chance is not that they have a True Ace prager’s been good but they can choke it off at about the sixth inning with two different guys Evan Ashen Beck and Chris Cortez that’s their one-two punch it’s not Poe and Lang on the front end it’s not hullan and jump on the front end it’s that they’ve got two Stoppers as Evan Ashen Beck was named stopper of the Year by the way uh today got that Hardware they’ve got two guys that they can go to for 10 outs that can put the game on Ice Florida is going to go to I’m sure Brandon Neely at some point if they get a lead and so it’s really a race through the first five innings to see what you can come up with and whenever a team gets that they feel like their Bullpen guy can go 65 pitches if he needs to that’s the fascinating point with with tomorrow’s game I’ve gotten to the point as far as like my level of hatred with the four SEC teams that are in it the number one team I can’t have winning in is A&M I don’t know any Tennessee fans I don’t care that much about Tennessee I don’t like their head coach I don’t love their program um I don’t want them to win but they’re not in in my world here and Tennessee’s got a national championship in football in within shouting distance you you can shout back to the t- Martin team A&M has nothing to hang its hat on period the best thing they’ve had in the last 25 35 45 years is a cocaine blow and quarterback who took the World by storm and won the Peach Bowl like that’s that’s the best they got a guy who was signing autographs and serving suspensions and flamed out in the NFL and it’s now just playing golf every day I’d probably like play around the golf with Johnny Manzel he’s probably quite a character but he’s not exactly you know the the the model citizen at this point they have no SEC championships not a lot of Big 12 championships no national championships nothing to hang their hat on and I want to keep that exactly like that and so this baseball team has been really good all year and absolutely positively as of eight days ago that team was good enough to win a National Championship without Braden mcgomery we’ll see certainly Coastal Carolina won one so it would suggest they could this Field’s really strong to try to get through it without your number two starter and your your best hitter but if they can find a way to get through five innings with Prader and get Ashen Beck in the game and find some way to get Cortez the ball coming up in in game two and get into that winnner bracket they can be a handful um they’re more talented I think than Kentucky NC State or Florida just remains to be seen so I’m I’m pulling against A&M First Tennessee second Florida third Kentucky fourth in that um in that pecking order I’d like any of the ACC seems to win it’ be thrilling to me for that to happen I’m All About It Go Go heels go who’s go pack uh what what team am I missing there from the ACC Florida State go NES any way you slice it with the ACC teams I’m in I don’t want anybody from the SEC winning it jello shot board is up and running I don’t know if anybody’s going to get to 68,000 but we’ll see I’m looking at the the the TV that’s got the game on in here and I’m not seeing a ton of orange or Carolina blue it’s an elite uniform match up uniforms are very much approves of everything that’s going on on the field right now uniform wise looks like a big Omaha crowd uh which is awesome they just do such an unbelievable job of supporting that event but I’m not seeing a huge turnout from either of those fan bases a little bit disappointing but maybe as the week goes on you’ll see a little bit more of uh of that we’ll get you caught up on more of game for got to avoid the sweep 7:30 tonight on 1045 ESPN bat region we this weekend coming up tomorrow we’ve got the Red Sox hosting the Yankees at 6:15 and then again on Sunday at 6: p.m that is all on 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge this is the hunt Palmer show brought to you by corks cajun fried fish and shrimp as I mentioned 1-1 up in Omaha right now North Carolina and Virginia tied in the bottom of the sixth inning um Beck where do you stand on the team that eliminated you winning the championship does that make you as a fan feel better well uh I think we talked about this last week but you said you don’t like it you it doesn’t make you feel any better and it’s like I didn’t feel better that Coastal Carolina won the National Championship I felt like crap cuz Coastal Carolina came to the box and swept us like I hated that and then in 2017 LSU lost to Florida they were the Champs obviously and then in 2018 LSU went up to Corvalis in that Regional and got beat and Oregon State won the National Championship like none of that made me feel any better I was just ticked off that we lost yeah I um to me I actually I do I to me I take some solace in it I do I I feel a little bit better in fact and then so there’s that situation where you lose to the eventual Champion but then also you it it I think it feels really good when you beat the team that becomes a eventual Champion like the year LSU beat Auburn in football I was didn’t they beat uh wasn’t it one that never happened no um what am I thinking of I thought there was a year where they beat the um they beat the champ yeah but that situation to me is is far better obviously than losing to the eventual champ but I don’t I don’t mind it when you lose to the champ well they beat the champ in 2011 yeah that’s true unfortunately I don’t think anybody felt any better about that no that’s true um but no I I I feel you you were probably really young but you you felt worse when Brook went 0 and2 in Omaha you’re like oh well they weren’t even any good well I don’t think I felt worse but it definitely sucks whenever you lose to someone and then they go on to lose it definitely doesn’t feel to me it feels it feels better whenever you lose to somebody who eventually wins we shall see if the uh tar Hills can get it done they are tied with Virginia as they play in the later innings in the opener up there at the College World Series all right let’s play some TI or leave it all right let’s see first one here sweep time in the NBA Finals the Mavs will not win tonight take it or leave it the Mavs will not win I’ll take it um I think they’ll play hard I think they’ll give effort I think it’ll be a packed house but I just think the Celtics are going to win I had the Mavs winning game too I thought they could try to make a series of it at this point not looking good the Celtics are the best team all year they they’ve they’ve just been the best team and they are playing absurd defense in a in a league that prioritizes scoring it’s officiated for scor in that’s so skilled and and and you got you know centers making it’s just it’s a ridiculous offensive League they defend and they’re getting it done against Luca and Kyrie who hadn’t quite shown up yet so um yeah I think that I think the Celtics will get it done tonight and that’s a that’s a bummer for the NBA to work towards this Crescendo and have a complete dud yeah I I think the death Nowell for the Mavericks was Luca that in the game three just fouling out and just it doesn’t seem like it whenever he whenever he struggles it’s whenever he is too much in his head he’s worried about the refs the foul the fouls being called and unless he can turn he’s going to need to turn it around and and and him and Kyrie obviously like we talked about before they have to they both have to have incredible games for them to be the Celtics and I actually think they’re going to win tonight I I don’t think that I think they just have too much pride and I don’t think Luca and Kyrie are G to Celtics let off the gas they go go back to Boston and clinch it yeah maybe maybe so uh but I did see it’s pretty funny I’ve seen people talking about Bob Koozie who is 95 he’s still alive but he’s uh everybody’s talking about he he was interviewed about about the Celtics possibly winning another championship and he said I’m 95 effing years old with one foot in the grave I know I’m in overtime right now all I want to see is the Celtics hang up Banner number 18 I think it’s funny but at the same time it’s like Bob you’ve seen them hang 17 banners okay I think I think you’re doing okay even if you don’t get to see him get 18 I saw another one and we certainly don’t mean to to speak ill of those who have passed and it it’s in ch it’s certainly not an insulting but they said Jerry West would rather die than see the Celtics win another championship so yeah there’s a little bit of that kley just rolled one in for a double he had a sizable putt for a double he didn’t make it for a six as we as we said very possible that those guys up top start to struggle and not too surprising not won’t be surprising if if a couple of those guys up there fall off but all right last one here Father’s Day take it or leave it I mean I’ll take it I uh my wife tends to think that I’m crazy for like not emphasizing Father’s Day Mother’s Day big production we’re doing Church we’re doing lunch he wants to be pampered and get the presents and stuff and that’s all fine and well I’m happy to do that um I don’t really care I just want to sit there and watch the golf tournament or as we were talking about earlier I might go go play golf I’m not interested in any presents I don’t need anything don’t don’t don’t spend the money um and you know if she wants to make some meatballs or something that sounds great to me too but I’m I’m not all that fired up about it I we got my d a card I probably wouldn’t have even gotten my d a card but my my my wife got it and we signed it and sent it up there I’ll give him a call I’ll see how the US open’s going but I I don’t have huge huge Father’s Day plans yeah I um it’s always for for me my dad my dad’s birthday is like May 29th or something like that so it’s like a few weeks before Father’s Day so it’s always like okay I need to get him something for his birthday but I also need to get something for Father’s Day and so usually I end up just waiting if I feel kind of bad cuz I don’t get anything for his birthday then I’ll get something for Father’s Day too so it’s a whole thing but it’s uh Father’s Day I I I think it’s it’s for yeah I think you’re right though like usually the dads don’t they’re not worried so much about it as as as the mothers are I’ll one up you on the birthday my dad’s birthday is June the 25th so that’s uh like nine days after last year we were in Omaha his birthday fell on game two when we lost by a thousand so we left in the sixth inning and went and got a stake like we were not we were not going to be uh watching any more Jack kagle own three run hom we’d seen enough last thing though I thought on Sam Dutton transferring to Auburn really I mean he’s from uh he’s from Alabama that’s that’s near home I I Sam Dutton is is a pretty good pitcher he’s not going to be an ace uh he’s not going to be a closer can he get SEC hitters out I think so he throws 93 Miles hour and throws a lot of strikes and has a decent slider so that’s that’s not surprising at all and wish him the best of luck specifically when he’s pitching against A&M and Arkansas and Florida and Vanderbilt not as much when he takes on the purple and gold but uh guy guy had a decent run there of uh of three years here in in Baton Rouge all right our Friday show is bun by corks cajun fried fish
