freaking first cut golly welcome to the first cup podcast I’m Rick ging and this is your round three recap for this week’s RBC Canadian open 18 holes to go in Canada joining me to break it all down Kyle Porter is here KP hey buddy how we doing we we are I’m back I am back on the grid I was just traveling around the DFW metroplex after my power got knocked out on Tuesday so I’m uh I’m pretty Fired Up watch some golf I’ve got the uh the college baseball regionals is always like a super fun thing and I don’t know if you’ve seen this uh this show they have on ESPN uh squeeze something Squeeze Play No have you seen this no what is it it’s kind of like NFL Red Zone they just go to whatever game is is like has action going it’s awesome it’s like perfect for that type of thing it is I love that first off it is I think I think some of these schools need to go to wood bats the the balls that these guys hit are unbelievable dude I was talking to I had a text right going with some some buddies today and we were talking they were talking about how they would prefer maybe there’s like a middle ground maybe there’s like a some sort of I don’t know because you don’t you don’t want like one nothing games all over the place right but right you also don’t want like anybody to get smoked yeah and I think I mean they did R roll back the bats like 15 years ago or whatever 10 years ago yeah because they were having like 22 to 12 I mean it was stupid yeah and the exit velocities were nuts so they they cranked them down but I I swear man it looks it looks dangerous out there one uh yeah one complaint I have uh is and this is sort of golf related I don’t follow college baseball throughout the year and whenever I watch it I want there to be and this is like again this is golf adjacent I want there to be some sort of way for me to I need a list of like okay who are the prospects who who should I be watching yeah from this game that’s like gonna get drafted and you can Google it and like get there but I need like a this is your top hundred this is why this is who where they’re from who they are what all that stuff and I like I’ve kind of struggled to find that so I don’t I know if it still exists but there there’s yeah there’s probably like baseball America’s top 100 or whatever that they could put onto the broadcast because I agree with you because the other thing is some of these teams like the nine hitters batting 330 with 19 home run and I’m like well he must be the number one overall pick it’s like no this dude like platoon for his own team and he’s not even gonna get drafted yeah yes and I actually ran into this because our local high school is planning to go to state tonight I’m about to head over there after this podcast uh with my with my kids there’s there’s no information about like like with with with high school football you’re like okay here’s the 247 list or here’s the whatever list and with baseball there’s like nothing you I mean you can like third page of Google this guy’s going to mclenon Jr College you’re like I don’t like I don’t have time to to do all this that’s do you think that’s because like in football they’re gonna immediately be in the starting lineup or they’re immediately gonna have so it’s a lot easier to say this guy is here’s number one here’s number two here’s number three some of these guy I mean many of these guys will never see the major leagues well I think that and there’s also a market there’s an appetite for football recruiting that there’s just not when it comes to to college baseball so it doesn’t make any business sense for that to exist and maybe that’s the answer like for the for the like the top 100 list in college also but you know couple times a year it would be be nice to have interesting okay well I’ll keep that in mind let’s talk Canadian open and as we like to do let’s get to a couple of big notable movers in the morning let’s start here with Tom Kim and this is interesting here KP because I think you know 2024 has been uh by expectation a down year for Tom Kim he went out and he shot a 5 under 65 he’s gotten better every round this week 70 68 65 he is now seven under he’s in a tie for 11th we are starting to see his results come around a little bit uh 24th at Charles Schwab 26th at the PGA Championship he hasn’t missed a cut since the Texas open what what’s the state of the union on Tom Kim right now yeah I think that he it’s a little bit of a rebound effect where he got so uh LED when he won won what was it twice in his first several starts you’re like oh this guy’s like a top 10 player in the world and I think there were those of us that were like wait a second the underlying stats here kind of tell a different story and I think those those were important to take into account because the modern PJ tour does not reward kind of what Tom Kim does well but then it almost went too far the other way right where it was like okay we’ve we’ve gone too far in each Direction and now it seems like we’re starting to balance out I mean he’s had some really I think surprisingly good results over the last couple of years I mean the t2 at the Open Championship was super interesting to me he’s played well at Majors uh he’s he’s he’s played well at some some like really what I would deem Big Boy courses and that is and I don’t mean like long courses because I don’t think he I think that’s actually his his struggle but I mean like hard courses you know and and difficult places and I think that that to me is is really interesting so I’m I’m I think we’re leveling out with Tom Kim where it’s like yeah he’s top 25 guy but probably not like a top five or top 10 type guy it was a 65 for Tom Kim he is currently seven shots off the lead but just three off of second place we’ll talk about that in a little bit it was also a 65 for Rory mckelroy who did the thing he went out in 30 with an eagle on four Birdie on five Birdie on seven Birdie on nine yeah then cooled off uh little bit there KP he played his second nine at even par and now the line of the week is 6672 65 he two in at 7even under par yeah when I see a six on the card for Rory on a on a par five that that is it’s not a red flag but it’s just a it’s a it’s a disappointment right like he with his length there’s not a lot of true par fives on on Majors is different but like at regular PGA Tour events and that six on 17 is you know you said this on HQ Friday took him out of the tournament but man if he makes four there shoots 63 then all of a sudden what is he five back then you’re like okay that that’s that’s real like that’s a real thing so that I thought that was a real disappointment at the end of his round but I mean 65 is still very good he’s hitting it great so yeah and uh we haven’t gotten the official Memorial Field next week but we’ve been told that all the uh available players all of those who who are eligible are committed so we’ll see Rory and and everybody else at at Jack’s Place next week as well and then Tommy Fleetwood uh beat both Tom Kim and Rory Mary by a shot he and Victor Perez with the round of the day will focus in here on Tommy that was a 64 blemish free highlighted by a birdie streak on two three and four we talked a lot about him on HQ and I’m sure we’ll talk about him uh at the end when we talk about the odds here really interesting stat profile he had some really cool quotes after the round that we can talk about I’m I’m feeling Tommy lad right now yeah I am too um this was a great round and he didn’t even putt that well he was kind of he was a little better than field average he’s just hitting it so good and that’s not that’s not a new thing that’s not a shocking thing um he he’s in a really good spot and we can talk about that more at the end but I thought he worked himself into a to me kind of a perfect spot to win from going into Sunday now whether that comes to fruition who knows anything can happen on you know over 18 an 18 hole stretch but to me this is like this is kind of where Rory needed to get to and Tommy did it with his 64 yeah that was uh his best round of the week we were kind of waiting for that so 6770 then 64 on Saturday Tommy’s five back but just one out of second will sort through that here in just a moment we’ve got to get to the top of the board uh it was a series of runs uh in the afternoon with with guys taking the lead coughing it up taking the lead etc etc we are going to cover that talk through the betting odds and give our ideas thoughts predictions on who’s going to win the Canadian open but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners you need your sports news anywhere we’ve got breaking news to bring you then get your sports anytime you want them big trade news overnight to discuss because we know you need Sports all the time a lot of movement in the rankings this week a legend adds to their legacy we’re bringing you that breaking news right here on HQ CBS Sports HQ anywhere anytime all the time and we’re back okay KP this was kind of uh to me a story of three golfers in the afternoon we’ll start here with uh McKenzie Hughes who is clearly the favorite around Hamilton Golf and Country Club he is the top Canadian at the moment he’s got a couple shot lead on Cory Connor and and Taylor pendrith he shot a three under 67 uh two Bogies on the card including one on his final hole of the day to to drop from 11 under to 10 under par he’s been in my opinion kind of playing with fire all week he’s Hol out a couple of times he’s been relying on the short game but I I thought he uh played some of his more sustainable golf today yeah I agree with the playing with fire thing I think a lot of these guys at the top of the Border kind of playing with fire right which I think is what makes Sunday so interesting as it relates to probably not Rory but Tommy and you know maybe some other guys that are a little bit further back um look I think Sunday’s really interesting for Mackenzie Hughes too though because he has that he has that uh angle that nobody else at the top of this board has which is the Canada thing right and and I think that there’s an emotion there’s a there’s almost like a a u writer cup or president cup like aspect to what he’s doing right now that man just hearing the crowds laid in his round it was like this is I mean it’s Mackenzie Hughes it’s not like it’s he’s not like a top five player in the world but because he’s in Canada because of what he was doing it it was that was pretty cool and I’m interested to see how that sort of plays into how he performs on Sunday there have not been back-to-back winners at the Canadian open since a since before World War I you’re talking about back-to-back Canadians yes what did I say back toback winners yeah there’s always back-to-back winners there’s been a ton of back-to-back Winn just a lot of them all over the place yes yeah and they they hadn’t I mean the crazy part about it is that they hadn’t won it in 68 years or 69 whatever it was and now you could I mean you’re 18 holes from going two in a row which is is pretty wild it’s unbelievable all right well he will obviously uh be the favorite on the grounds tomorrow he’s not the favorite according to Las Vegas it was Ryan Fox who was shot out of a cannon on Saturday birdie 2 eagled four birdie five he was four under through five and then KP he looked at a leader por and saw that he had a multiple shot lead at the Canadian open looking for his first PGA Tour Victory and I I mean you could almost see it um his putts were tentative he lost the pace it got defensive he made four Bogies coming in did not make another birdie after the fifth hole th this I mean I could see the pressure on his face well and this pressure this is why guys talk about how uncomfortable it is to lead because you could also see it going the other way like after he gave up the lead on uh 17 the putt that he hit on 17 was incredible like he kind of got his Touchback and it just like that to me almost spoke more to the uncomfortability of leading from out in front was like yeah guys are fine even if they’re chasing and this is why I kind of think Tommy’s going to win guys are fine if they’re chasing it’s like yeah I don’t know like we’ll see what happens when they’re leading by four with like 25 holes left that’s uncomfortable because all of a sudden you you’re like yeah I should win this tournament right and I think that speaks to what you’re talking about happened to to Ryan Fox over the last whatever 12 holes on on Saturday yeah Ryan Fox did win on the DP World Tour he won the BMW PGA Championship which is a massive event on the DP World Tour that was in September he also played well at the alred Dunhill links Championship he finished runner up there but as mentioned KP this would be his first PGA Tour Victory it would solidify status it would solidify a lot of the stuff that he’s been that he’s been working towards so uh obviously a lot to play for for him and basically everybody else at the top of the board I mean he it was so weird because like nobody wanted to lead almost every you just kind of stall out stall out take a lead stall out and then all of a sudden Here Comes Bobby Mack at the end but I I just it makes me wonder what’s in store for Sunday right because I I don’t I I just don’t think this is going to be very straightforward I don’t think so either and I like Hamilton because I mean there was an 11 shot difference between the best and the worst round today and there’s a lot of options and it is kind of strategic and things can go sideways uh did not go sideways for Robert McIntyre though he kind of had the opposite day that Ryan Fox did so Ryan Fox gets off to a hot start struggles coming in Robert McIntyre struggles struggles going out one over and then catches fire in fact the four hole stretch from 14 through 17 he went birdie birdie birdie Big Bird eagle that’s five under through four to finish this round and while everybody else Ben Griffin’s kind of struggling and McKenzie Hughes is putting a bogie on the card and Ryan Fox is putting multiple Bogies on the card it’s Robert McIntyre that’s playing the best and this opens up a four shot lead four clear with 18 to go for B Robert McIntyre bmac I don’t know why Bob Ma I mean you could go bmac RAC I don’t know yeah uh I I’ve not played a lot of nines where my worst score is a four that’s that’s sick that’s wild um really good closing stretch look I you know I think I think the canadi you and I are in agreement about National opens they’re very cool right but I think you don’t this is this is a good field I wouldn’t say it’s an amazing field and yet we have some really really cool storylines going into Sunday we’ve talked about a bunch of them we’ve talked about Tommy we’ve talked about mckeny Hughes we’ talked about the potential of of Rory shooting 61 or whatever on Sunday Robert McIntyre with his dad on the bag I mean the fist pump that his dad gave on 17 after he made that whatever 35 4f footer for Eagle that’s pretty awesome like that was really really cool and you know I think about his heartbreak at um the in Scotland last year at the Scottish open when Rory finished what two3 on him to yeah to to beat him at the end and this this would not be like total Redemption for that but I don’t know man it would be it’s a very easy story I think to root for yeah so Robert McIntyre was about to have one of the one of the great stories of the year right didn’t he h he hits this unbelievable shot on 18 makes birdie at his National Championship he’s about to fend off Rory mroy and win this thing and Rory goes birdie birdie and steals it from him and he’s just a footnote yeah I mean it it was I think at the time I tweeted like it’s it’s a Twist that Rory finally broke somebody else’s heart right after after the last couple of years of Rory at at major championships um you know Bobby Mack is not I was talking to somebody about him today he’s he’s not he’s not a mega Talent he’s not a wonderin he’s not JT or spe or somebody like that like he’s he just is like gets the most out of everything right he’s not long he’s not amazing at anything but he just gets the most out of what he has and that makes him especially with his dad on the bag that’s just a sick story to root for like I’m fired up about watching that on Sunday here are the stories Robert McIntyre 14 under par dad on bag looking for first career PGA Tour Victory Ben Griffin 10 under looking for first PGA Tour Victory also almost quick off and was an accountant recently McKenzie Hughes 10 underpar would this would be his third win but obviously it would be uh a Canadian winning the Canadian open Ryan Fox 10 underpar that would be his first PGA Tour win Tommy Fleetwood amongst those at nine under would be his first PGA Tour win uh then we haven’t even talked about Sam Burns Chase Crow Joel Damon all other Aaron Ry other guys that are lurking so lot lot of lot of good stories here yeah I mean it again like for a non signature event ton of good stories like it’s it’s kind of it was shocking to as today unfolded how I kept thinking like oh that would be cool oh that would be cool you know like I you just go down the board and and there’s a lot of that so I’m excited about Sund what does Las Vegas think Joshua wow Robert McIntyre four shots clear I saw him at even money we are now showing him at minus 110 the favorite it’s Robert McIntyre the favorite over the field to win the Canadian open McKenzie Hughes 8 to one Ryan Fox and Tommy Fleetwood are both 11 to1 Sam Burns and Ben Griffin are both 12 to1 if you want to think that Roy mroy can make up seven he’s 20 to1 and then Aaron Ry who’s at eight under is 35 to1 KP you and I uh on HQ were both pretty pretty smitten with Tommy Fleet yeah I think I think Rory at 20 you have to throw something at that just for the possibility uh I I just more than I like Fleet though I dislike I just talked about Bobby Mack and I look like I think there’s a difference between I would love to see him win and I think he’s going to win because I mean his numbers are not it’s not a great profile Rick no it is not Kyle he he made everything he looked at today he’s made everything he’s looked at all week he is gaining 10 almost 11 Strokes putting um he also he had a stretch where he played Four holes and five on this is like it it’s it is being held together with sticks and air right now sticks and air it it just feels like when this happens you’re like okay the there’s some there’s a it just feels a little bit of like a little random that it would happen at the very end of the third round right like okay what if that happens in the the middle of the third round or the end of the or the beginning of the second round or whatever I just don’t again I would love it if he won I think it’d be really fun to write about but I don’t love the way that he’s going into Sunday um but I think the other part of this is like the guys behind him Mackenzie Hughes is kind of doing the same thing Ryan Fox is a little bit doing the same thing fleetwood’s kind of the maybe Burns a little bit too are the guys that are that are hitting it well so I don’t know I mean I wouldn’t be shocked if if Bobby Mack won I just like Fleetwood a lot better at 11 to1 than I like McIntyre at minus 1110 I also think that the yeah you’re are not getting my Robert McIntyre money at minus 110 so he is he’s losing uh a stroke and a little bit more on approach this week it’s a very very very short list of guys who win on the PGA tour losing on approach like it’s a very short list I’ll I’ll pull it for you if he does it tomorrow how how many times does that happen every year um off the top of my head two three okay so has it happened inconceivable has it happened so far this year uh I’ll find out for you my favorite is when uh VJ Singh used to win tournaments with negative Strokes putting that was sick yeah that’s sick too um so Robert M so so here’s the thing I I know that we’re waiting on the Tommy Fleetwood PGA to win but he’s got a bunch of international wins and he’s got the best stat profile and even though not like he’s he’s he is the class of the guys that I think have a chance now Rory Rory has a chance if McIntyre just coughs it up I think Fleetwood has a chance even if he even if he doesn’t uh yeah I well I mean Fleetwood doesn’t have a chance if McIntyre shoots 67 no but I just thought like but if but if Robert McIntyre shoots like a 69 yeah 6970 which I think is like very in play yes all right let me uh I’m going to pull this right now so just Vamp for me for like 20 seconds yeah well the thing that I was referencing earlier is is when VJ had like an and other players have done this too I remember Jason duffner did it one year at Memorial like a negative Strokes gain putting and and winning the tournament you’re like you like it it shouldn’t be possible like you hit the ball like a monster and you just didn’t hit anything and yet you still want like that’s that’s a crazy thing and right and this week McIntyre’s kind of doing the opposite all right so winners to lose on approach uh this is PGA Tour it dates back to uh the entirety of the shot link era which is 04 and I I gave it too much credit there are only one two like 28 times so last time it happened was January of 23 John Ram won the century Tournament of Champions which was a small field event he only gained 10 and a half Strokes to the field that week um any right 2023 that was last year yeah it was 18 months ago okay uh Scotty Sheffer did it in Phoenix in 2022 that was his first wi yep Roy mroy did it at the CJ cup at Summit club that was 2021 that was Vegas that was Vegas it happened twice in 2020 uh Bryson did it at the rocket mortgage now that’s that’s also the week he broke shot length though yeah that I remember that so he all of his stats are off the te like he had like no approaches on the week because he was getting like banged because he was hitting it too close to the to the green yeah cam Smith did it the week he gained eight Strokes putting at the Sony Open in in 2020 so it has happened five times since 2020 uh yeah I yeah well I mean the flip side of this is like Bobby M could come out and shoot a great round from T to Green right and go out and win the tournament but as it stands right now I think we’re we’re talking about this in the context of minus 110 and don’t love that based on everything that you just told me right agree okay anything else KP uh hold on I have one more thing I had today with my niece-in-law okay which I I want to throw this out to the people if it’s my wife’s niece that’s my niece-in-law yeah this is this is uh no no no this is crazy we had this discussion at the PGA Championship and Joe muso and I said that you’re in that’s like serial killer stuff it’s like me not wearing sandals to the beach my wife’s mother is my mother-in-law my wife’s brother is my brother-in-law my wife’s niece is my niece-in-law yeah but I think you I think you get to the point where it’s distant enough that it’s like nobody cares if it’s your niece or your niece-in-law right like I love being told that no like I I agree no one cares like like nobody like like you might need the distinction of like oh this isn’t my B this isn’t like my my family of origin sister this my sister-in-law maybe she did something crazy I don’t know but niece-in-law it’s like I don’t I don’t really care like if it’s yeah if it’s one or the other is okay last last thing so where do we draw what about like my wife’s uncle it’s not it’s not my uncle and it’s not my uncle-in-law it’s just my wife’s uncle yeah but like it just sounds insane to say uncle-in-law it’s the most accurate description true but like where do we draw the line that’s what I’m asking you you I don’t think we do I think the line goes there is no line so is it like your second cousin-in-law yeah no that is that’s insane that’s crazy Joe Joe I ride with Joe I stand with Joe yeah yeah all right that’s fine that’s fine it was it was it was a it was a beautiful brunch and uh we had a nice time okay we will be back Sunday um so so Joe so Joe also made up Tomas he said Tomas n in-law sounds like a a European Tour player which is true I was going to make an Easter egg profile on rickr good.com for Tomas n inlaw I know I know that would be Easter eggs everywhere baby I love that all right uh we will be back Sunday night to break it all down somebody’s gonna win this it’s gonna be a great story it’s GNA be triumphant or sad or maybe a little bit of both uh we be here big thanks producer Josh does all the hard work behind the scenes Kyle Porter available at Kyle Porter CBS and you can find me at Rick rungood this has been the first cut we’ll catch you next time [Music] [Music]

  1. Canadian open even with weaker fields does not fail to deliver…seems like one of the most fun tournaments every year and this course is a good challenge with an interesting layout. PGA should be making this a premier event every year even if they need to juggle the lineup.

  2. Who in their right mind would pick Fleetwood over Macintyre to win….Fleetwood had several chances last year in regulation and in a playoff and blew it, he lost to the first Canadian winner of the Canadian Open in 70 years ffs lol.
