welcome to the gtn tech show loads of hot Tech this week including a new time trial helmet a new gravel bike and a new time trial bike which means the death of Rim brakes is looming ever closer and we’re discussing how to protect your bike from thieves and hopefully prevent it from being stolen okay this week we are discussing how to stop your bike getting stolen because bike thieves they’re the scum of the earth the lowest of the low there is nothing and nobody worse out there there’s probably a few people who are worse all right um but thanks they are bad they are the worst um yeah so we’re going to discuss thanks to thanks to Tech what you can now do to help protect your bike better so this is kind of like um a bit of a follow on from last week’s main talking point where we were discussing you know how to buy a secondhand bike safely and kind of got stinking yeah now the first thing we just going to point out is this isn’t really going to be a discussion about bike locks because bike locks have a bit of a problem right which is that the sad fact is that you can’t leave your bike locked up in a public place if it’s I would say worth more than 500 quid $600 because at that point it is very stealable and it doesn’t matter what lock you have they can all be broken into and furthermore a lot of you know you guys who are viewing this you have you know nice bikes that are worth more than that and also with the kind of riding that we’re doing whether it’s gravel or Road you’re typically not wanting to carry around a big heavy lock all the time that’s the last thing I want on my bike you know and you keep your bike in a secure place at home so with that in mind we’re going to focus more now on tracking devices well and the tech that can also help you things like privacy zones as well because most people will use St or some kind of ride tracking platform and by setting that at least it means you’re not making it obvious to people where your house is yeah um so trackers uh there are several things that exist and the most notable thing that is like the family fortunes or Family Feud top answer if you’re an American is uh is the air tag now sound effect there if we need that now yeah the thing is with air tags is they don’t stop your bike getting stolen obviously but the idea is that by installing this kind of tracking device on your your bike you will be able to track it down and get it back um and they’re also useful for traveling uh as as we found um or well didn’t find cuz we didn’t have them when Virgin Atlantic decided to lose all of our bikes on route to Tucson so the important thing as a Tracker is to make sure it’s hidden out of sight and there’s loads of good places to hide them on your bike you’ve got inside the bar end down the seat post youve got a little cover under the bottom bracket um loads of bikes have covers for internal cable routing you can hide them there as well um get them inside the frame inside the frame good spots to keep them out of sight effectively yeah the problem though is that trackers like an air tag actually aren’t as good as what people think and my understanding is that they did used to be better but the problem is is that naughty people not bik thieves but other naughty people who like you know like Marthur and baby reindeer stalkers brilant reference could have used an air tag to stalk people and so they had to create this anti-stalking feature on them now what that means is is if you have if the bike Thief has an iPhone yeah and you install an air tag on your bike and they take your bike away then after about 30 minutes or so they will get a notification pinging on their phone that an unknown air tag is constantly within their Loc is following them around I did not know this which then alerts them I mean they don’t have to be the smartest Thief to think oh maybe there’s an air tag on the bike I just stole at which point then they’re going to go and search for it and discard it or or whatever um so this to me seems like a huge flaw so is there a way around this well the other thing is is that the air tags have a little chirp sensor on them as well so you can search for them and then they make a little chirpy noise so they can the thief can track it down down even more easily so the idea behind that is to help you find your keys presumably yes because that’s what they’re primarily designed for helping you find your keys yeah now what people are actually doing is modifying air tags so that they don’t make the noise like they’re damaging the noise making part of course yeah and so that it doesn’t make the noise and then hiding them in the back it makes perfect sense right yeah but um another development on this which I think is really cool is this so this is is a pretty new power meter it’s come out this year so it’s the 4i um Precision 3 Pro I think so yeah okay um so it’s available single-sided or dual-sided um and well according to Independent people although it’s built onto the Shimano crank is actually a very reliable power meter I like the way you phrased that yeah okay um now what’s exciting about this is in in here it has effectively like an air tag built into the meter that technology like the find my technology yeah that it’s the find my technology so the downside is that it’s not yet compatible with Android devices it is again just something for Apple devices but that’s pretty cool cuz it means you’ve got a tracking device built in you’ve got that functionality but there’s a few nuances to it so this doesn’t work when as um an air tag or the find my function doesn’t work when it’s being ridden which makes perfect sense as a power meter yeah however when you put put your bike to you know the cafe or or whatever to rest after about 5 minutes it goes to sleep and it turns itself into find my mode that’s actually a really good idea which means that if the thief takes it yeah and it’s in like Transit yeah or r or they ride it away it’s not pinging location data but then you it means that there’s a good chance that when they come to a place where they stop which that hide out um then they then it will ping that location and presumably that means that the batter is going to last as long as possible so then you’ve got more chance of trying to recover your stolen it well not only that but it it basically this doesn’t um chirp yeah like like an air tag does okay so what could happen is the thief might go right well I I’ve searched for an air tag I can’t find an air tag on this bike nothing beeping but I have found this little coin cell battery thing here will take that out so they take that out but then they sell the bike what’s the first thing the person that buys it going to do put a battery straight in there get the working fire that bad boy back fire up the foury and then at that point it’s going to Ping a location yeah back to you and you’re going to go get your I know what’s going to happen you’re going have this really award awful situation you’re going to find your stolen bike you’re going to go to some unsuspecting person that’s potentially bored they go um slightly awkward you seem to have my stolen bike which I assume you’ve just paid someone good money for yeah and and and and this raises a whole another issue with the whole thing of tracking devices on bikes because it’s it depends what country you’re in and it depends what the laws are within that specific country um or perhaps even what state you’re in but but there there is this thing around like vigilante justice it’s like once you find that there’s like this and then you become a stalker like you’re you’re then stalking someone with this device to go to their house and then you start watching their house staking it out and then you’re like I know my bike’s in there this has taking a real turn you know what I mean but you can become stalker the criminal so so there’s a real like it’s it’s yeah it’s difficult but I would say it’s be I would still rather have a tracking device than not have one well if nothing else it’s just a useful like bit information to have for yourself for like your own sort of peace of mind as well it is a useful step and you know is useful information that you can pass on to the the relevant police authorities to help you um I mean there the interesting thing is I I did when researching this have a look and there is actually a tracking device on there that it that you can get that’s this um called a 360 tile sticker yeah tile is one of the big Brands uh like a competitor to um like the Apple Air tag technology really yeah and with that particular product you can apply for like a waiver on it that disables the anti-stalker mode right that would alert the thief but in doing that you’re basically saying that you’re not going to be a stalker yourself and you’re opening yourself up to a load of liability legally with a load of other things and they can then track you agree that they can track your location at all times oh God so they have access to all of your location data all of the time and they can do anything with that they can give that to any third party so you know it’s a bit this is an area that I’ve looked at in the past for like my bikes and my bags when traveling around one of the biggest frustrations I found was kind of what you alluded to earlier was that a lot of the technology tends to be like apple focused and based Google has actually opened up its own equivalent sort of like mesh Network recently which kind of means some of this technology is available for like Google Android users as well I think I might try and start to make use of it bit more in the in the coming weeks and months maybe yeah I I defin I’m definitely going to give this a go and and see what it’s like and then just be useful when you know flying or traveling with a bike I’m really intrigued to see yeah see it do its thing um I also think that just this kind of technology in general with these tags I I would welcome it to be included in more cycling products like I see no reason why it couldn’t be included in I don’t know like group sets shifters and things like that I tell you what I think one of the big falling blocks will be like lots of technology is the licensing fees and agreements do you know I think the the price is the factor that’s limiting stuff not the technology yeah um as we said at the start of the show though the most important thing is to keep your bike safe and secure in the first instance this is like an additional tool to help y um I think it would be Keen I’m Keen to hear other people’s thoughts on this as well so let us know in the comments section down below if you’ve got any experience with like tracking devices and stuff like that and if you’ve ever had a bike stolen and managed to recover it yeah and also so if you’ve not set up privacy zones on your tracking on your you know ride tracking app like for example you know straa do set up privacy zones because it is a fact people have been um targeted by bike thieves who’ve used that location data to track them down stay safe guys that’s what we’re saying yeah people do people’s homes do get targeted in that way all right time now for hot te and first up this week we spotted a new TT bike uh being used at the tour of the Alps one of the well preo warm-up races uh this was being written by Luke pla of jco alula who at the time was the race leader after a brilliant result on on the previous stage of summit finish uh and unveiled out a few new toys so it’s a brand new giant Trinity yeah the well the previous giant Trinity was quite long in the tooth been around quite a long yeah has been around for a little while one of the the few remaining Rim break bikes in the world tour pro pelaton yeah so I think now it’s only the biane Aquilla TT bike or biane Eagle um you don’t speak Italian it’s used by um ARA yeah um I think it’s I don’t want to say it’s a sad moment that Rim breaks are almost completely gone because I’m quite happy seeing disc breakes raced at the top level but I it does sadden me slightly to think there’s another rim brake option that’s gone for people yeah well it I think it had probably got to the point where the the wheel options were becoming more limited for yeah you’re team if you’re trying to compete at the top of the sport you need to use the latest and greatest technology um so yes the new one is Disc break it also is oh it’s a very Sleek looking machine there’s definitely changes that have been made uh with regards to when you look at the fork in particular it’s a lot deeper than the the previous taking advantage of the updated UCI rules but not taking of much of an advantage as they could have done with what’s allowed with tube shapes now they could have made a lot of the tube profiles a lot deeper and um they they haven’t which is intriguing because there’s and I’ve spoken to people who say there’s a number of things around this you know you are increasing more weight uh and also there’s diminishing returns because apparently that you increase skin friction drag I’m told as well you took that straight out of my mouth I was going to say say Ollie was telling me all about skin friction the other day in like a bike sense not in a weird way yeah not like in the toilets at work yeah that would definitely be weird weird anyway moving on let’s talk about helmets next so following on from talking about Luke plap he was also using yeah a new time TR helmet which we have both been laughing about saying look it looks like has a little bit of a bum crack on the top of the head yeah in this in this photo you can see what I mean it does look like he’s got a bum crack like he’s got like a bum on his head that’s what it look that’s is what it looks like kind of right so yeah actually we’ve got um a sensible article over on the gcn website taking a look about um the bike and the time tril helmet so the Bear in mind I don’t know this would 100% sure but the idea behind the shape of it is is to try and control and direct the air flow around the rider’s shoulders that’s about right yeah and then the channel down the middle is trying to get some of that air flow straight down the rider’s back the theory behind it that’s what the bum crack is for that’s the bum crack theory is it right well I just wish they’d called it that in their marketing the the I mean this is another TT helmet this is quite tame and it’s quite small by the standards of the recent yeah Trend yeah I I’m I’m interested to know from the viewers if you if you were going speed dating right with a bunch of non-cyclists and you’d lost a bet and you had to wear one of the current crop of time trial helmets from the world tour which one would you go for this would probably be towards the top of my list it well it’s better than some of them that are out there yeah yeah I just at least with the slightly shorter tailed um time helmet it’s when you like look around you wouldn’t be like bashing people at the end I think the Rudy projects like one that’s like the bin like the waste paper basket one is the is the bottom of mine um what I do think closely followed by the Arrow Head too okay what I do think is not playing into the favor of this helmet is the clear visor so if you if you if you reduce the shape of the visor slightly obviously you’re going to lose some of the arrow Advantage but then I feel like it makes it a little bit more in line with what we would say a traditional looking helmet what’s also occurred to me is the visor comes so far down out of your nose if you got some snot out of your nose it’s going to be fogging up the piser yeah which I often do you’re snotty boy on the time Drive yeah I am yeah um next up in hot Tech kago have a new gravel bike this is in addition to the c68 gravel that already exists and this one is called the g4x kago saying this is like the gravel version of of the V4 RS so it’s very much a racy boy this thing yeah um monoco design revised geometry compared to the c68 gravel 45 mm Wide Tire clearance and it’s using the new handlebar from kago the CC 01 wide I think the clues in the name here it’s just a wider version of their handlebar um it’s a very neat looking bike I don’t really want to give too much away about this because I think Sai was racing it at one of the gravel World Series the other day where he’s trying he’s trying to qualify for the gravel World Champs you have to keep to the channel to see how Sai got on and if he did actually manage to qualify for the gravel World there you go um there’s a few more bike industry Wes as well which we should probably run through to finish off hot Tech yeah yeah the bike industry still definitely seems to be suffering last week you know there was stuff about con yeah con bike’s going on that and then also Rafa is cut back on its North American I’ve also seen rumors um stages the come shut down yeah good news for for maybe it is cloud yeah um more hot Tech next week I guess it’s now time for comments of the week and we’re going to kick things off with some comments that I’ve picked out from other Le last week’s show favorite one is from 36 Sports awall um I love the be of you guys trying to sell bike parts in the park for any Facebook Marketplace Meetup regardless of the price I always meet at the local police department two things do I pick here first one that person I met in the park was not you it was your brother I think a lot of people watched it and thought it was me it wasn’t me it wasn’t my brother yeah incredible and Cameo I don’t don’t think I’ve never thought of meeting people at the local police department to C I know anyone that does that is that possible who is this person who who goes who goes on Facebook marketpl goes ah yes I will collect the goods in person from the police department maybe do where do you live maybe the jokes on us maybe the jokes on us next comment I said um someone says I think you two are very entertaining and enjoyable to watch together I appreciate everything you do thanks for just being you thank you thanks that’s a very kind person uh Marcus leers yeah says when I was new to cycling I bought what I thought or taught was a pinell Dogma f8 Sky Edition from a friend turned out it was a chinell bought it for around 2,500 quid that is a sad story well I think yeah not only what you thought was a Pinella you bought it from what you thought was a friend by the sounds of things that’s a tricky situation that one I don’t like gaslighting um that sounds awful um okay next some comments from underneath my video from last weekend where I was looking at the differences between carbon and aluminum handlebars someone have said fun fact Alex said the words handlebar slh handlebars 48 times in a 10-minute video I love that that was counted yeah well there you go that’s great handle bars handle bars handle bars we’ll have a little Montage handlebars handlebars handlebar handlebars handlebar handlebar handlebar trumpet the handle bars handle bars handle bars handle handle bars handle bars handle bars handle bars handle bar handle bar handlebar handlebar and handle bar handle bar handle handle bars handle bar to the handle bars handle bars or handle bars handle bars handle bars the handle bar handle handle bar handle bar handle bars handle bar handle bar handle bar handle bar handle bar handle bar handle bars handle bars handle bar handle bar handle handle bar but uh bugy Sprite says love your video Alex clear informative and entertaining see I picked out the positive ones I didn’t pick out keep up the good work thanks I didn’t pick out any of the nasty ones where people were like this guy’s an idiot yeah what an idiot this guy knows nothing about handlebars does he even know how to ride a bike yeah um okay then the dream build was next you run through these G yeah so if you’ve not seen this is where Alex is building his dream bike there’s a part two coming out very soon this weekend so make sure you turn on your notification subscribe to catch that cuz the first part all just really I really liked it thanks man um and and a bit different from what we normally do yeah but they said Brian rainy says I knew they were giving you that Mega tool kit for a reason campy always for a dream bike and titanium is the bonus yeah Park TOS hooked us right out with that absolutely boss tool kit didn’t they love that I’m quite jealous of that I one of those we’ll probably just have to share I think they’re quite expensive yeah yeah we can share I know I said I wouldn’t share the start with but we will um rter says this video was a nice change of pace lovely cinematography completely unexpected love the build super nice looking interesting components enjoy the bike and then finally Chris rise bike says what a cool old team car can you make a video bracket series of Now versus then we’ve already discussed it we’re going to try to do it yeah we want to do like a retro modern team car thing cuz we both like cars yeah and they are actually just really cool right it’s now time for the bike VA um if you want to submit your bike into the bike Vault and then we can pick it out the uploader is working the uploader is working yeah Link in the description down below get involved it’s fun to see so many bites getting uploaded again so first submission is from Winston with a oh what is this what is that a Circ a30m oh it’s titanium group setam Force I nice really yeah it’s a nice okay just a nice next one in is from um Panasonic dx4000 no it says submission by dumbass is that the camera that he’s used maybe yeah started working for Panasonics I had to buy a Panasonic gearing is a little bit taller than my Customs 3140 gearing on my gravel bike what do we think of it I like it super retro it’s a jointy angle but I think we can forgive that on retro bik like this yeah oh no it’s a nice it’s just not presented right I like crank set that chain set is beautiful though isn’t it well that might be enough to sway you onto a super nice perhaps I’m just this I don’t like that big log and the pampus grass okay so a nice for the log and the grass super nice for the bike okay super nice uh L incredible forever has a 2021 Giant Advanced SL it’s Ram Force EAP on there like um oh I like the colors um it’s good uh like a blue to red fade that is Smart Tan walls that is very smart you might super nice the wall as well looks nice it good wall isn’t it good good wall that rate it are we hting up super nice yeah I think that is a super nice bik love I think it’s yeah I can get on board with that for sure super nice next up is Yohannes pal fantastic job it’s a kago u bought an old kago rebuilt it with the latest dur Ace 2×1 mechanical as well as spinach you revx oh love those Wheels I don’t I oh God have you see did you see the the Wobble I had with that spinach that front spin not seen it yet in the hotter video no but side told me hat it show a clip oh it feels sketchy that bloody hell oh oh God got a bit of a speed wobble then the the front end terrifying I’ve got a set of these wheels in my garage maybe I’ll get them out you can ride them yeah maybe um do you know what the spiny Wheels I I really used to love them I think we can go super nice on them yeah think yeah super nice just for the J’s chain set yeah um Mand mandz 1301 Richie logic Road from 1997 again dur Ace on it I like that 7700 group set hand built Wheels oh tubeless tires on a retro bike I like that I’m going super nice on that yeah super nice that is a good one that was an easy one oh next up um finish off the bike vault is my personal retro bike no that is a nice that’s what are you doing propping it against the right it was a quick fire picture okay I don’t care it was a last minute rush job you you you you should lead by example and that is not leading by example that is shoddy jokes on me right cuz look at the next picture down you actually know what happened to this bike yeah yeah I I basically I rode this bike I was really smug I thought I was incredible cuz I had a cool retro bike I did 15 20 minutes of riding with everybody the rear hub broke here’s a picture of the rear hub I’m sad I’m still not over it but it’s all right cuz you’ve got like a drawer filled with j a hubs at home haven’t you just lying around so you just po one of those in they they’re just obscured slightly by the number of duras cranks yeah fun fact Sai sent me a link to an auction site that was selling off dur a cranks and some of them were at £100 really like this is genuinely true really one of them was £86 that’s quite an elaborate like ruse you’ve gone to to try and clear your name I’m just I’ll put a screen grab Tak to selling all of your J Ace crank sets for $100 pound yeah and then I’m going to buy them back buy them back to prove my point right that’s enough for this week’s GC Tech show um I’ve had a great time I think O’s had a good time hopefully you have too yeah stay tuned for Alex at the Shiro later this week bye bye

  1. Only use your expensive bikes professionally and use the bikes I can afford publicly. That way, when some poor bastard steals your $500 bike you won't care.

  2. What a waste of time… your misleading title leads to a whole load of nothing…

  3. Thanks for the info. on privacy protections on Strava. I just added that to my account. I confess I probably would not have thought about it otherwise.

  4. Slagging off your fellow working class doesn't solve anything, maybe get out of the corporate shit world you live in.

  5. Mine was stolen in 2023, while double locked to my car in a well-lit garage. It had an AirTag, and I got it back! I wrote up the story (below).

But in March ‘24, I gave a lecture to 50 MBA students, and in it I first walked through the cool tech aspect of getting the bike back, but then reversed it and talked about the stalking impacts. (And it’s not only AirTags… cars have tech to stalk you also. I think it’s Nissan who lets owners know that they may monitor their sexual activity.)

I like the idea of a tag mounted permanently to the bike, by the manufacturer, so that removing the tags would destroy the bike. And when enough bikes have these tags, the likelihood of theft drops dramatically. E.g., it makes little sense to steal an iPhone, if you know you can’t use it, and that it will be found.

A nefarious person might hide an AirTag in a backpack to stalk an unsuspecting person, but no one will walk around with a bike, and not know they have it.

(And IP contractual concerns don’t seem that hard to solve.)

  6. 7:52 I'm glad they brought this up, though I wish they discussed it a bit deeper. My immediate thought with trackers has always been like…So I know where my stolen bike is… Am I supposed to go steal it back? The police in my city 100% will not do anything, so what, I'm going to just walk into the chop shop, find my bike among all the others, and then walk out?

  7. Police doesn't care about tracking and getting back stolen bikes. There a lot of histories on reddit on how people tracked their bike, reporter to the police and they won't do anything

  8. Had a co worker who's bike was stollen and the thief left a "junker" in it's place. It wasn't;t a bad looking bike Just obviously old but it was a far better frame than what she had lost so the husband of another one of our co workers helped her restore the bike and put a better quality derailleur on it and she actually made off better in this situation. And because the bike looked dated she had no issues with theft again. It's part of the reason I wouldn't dream of replacing my 1997 era Trek bike. It doesn't look cool anymore but it is a solid machine and no one other than kids misbehaving would consider stealing a bike that probably has a value of $60 these days. Unless you are doing specialty riding an old dated frame is a good way to deter theft as that tech really hasn't changed much since the safety bicycle was invented.

  9. I mostly ride a tatty hybrid bike I got cheap on Ebay (yes, the seller still had the original receipt!). Until bike manufacturers develop some decent security I can't see the point of spending a fortune on a new one.

  10. The worst kind of thieves are the ones that steal tools. Taking away an honest, hard working persons ability to work is just so low. It’s sucks to lose anything to theft, but losing tools and equipment is especially bad.

  11. You're wrongly looking at this. The goal is to swat down the human trash. E bike rigging is easy. Energize a high amp capacitor and connect with a few bare metal contact points on the grips and brake levers, a remote switch to activate when parked. You could do the same for a road bike but need to be more clever about hiding the battery and capacitor. A hollowed out fake headlamp or such. Shocking good time.

  12. I'm not too worried about my bicycle getting stolen. It is quite scratched up from 20 years of wear, slightly torn seat, chewed up luggage rail and mismatched replacement parts. If my bicycle is among the most beat-up-looking ones in the area, thieves will hopefully not bother with it.

  13. Letting the thief know there is a tag with them isn’t such a bad idea as it may mean they ditch the bike as they know now it’s being tracked

  14. The police wont even care if you can tell them which house you know the Bike to be in with your tracker.

  15. had a bike stolen, did not get it back… didn't even report it to the police. Unless your smart enough to program a device that uses a sim card on your own, then don't bother. These companies are not trustworthy enough to allow them to track/monitor you, even selling the data.

  16. From what I have seen in research, registering your bike with a group like the 529 Garage and other bicycle registration databases, and provide stickers for your bike to note that it is registered, is significantly less likely to be stolen. They have done sting operations with bikes who were and were not registered/ stickered and the ones with the sticker were left alone unless they were very expensive bicycles. The thinking seems to be that if they are being stolen for re-sale and then the next person to purchase the bike goes to have it registered themselves, then they will see it was stolen and they can alert the authorities that so and so deals in stolen property and have evidence of it.
