At home in South Africa with Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht | PGA TOUR University

In episode 1 of “PGA TOUR Origins,” we’re in Christo Lamprecht’s home town in South Africa. The Georgia Tech senior has made a name for himself through PGA TOUR University, as well as the global amateur ranks, thanks to his win at The Amateur Championship in 2023, which qualified him to test his game on the major stage in The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, where he held the lead after Round 1. His next test will come at this year’s Masters Tournament.

At 6’8” tall, Lamprecht’s lofty goals exceed his towering frame, which he uses to his advantage with a unique playing style that he crafted in George, South Africa, an area rich with golf history. We trace back to those roots, and the courses and people who helped mold him into the competitor he is, including a South African golf legend who hopes to see Christo meet the “Tall Order” of expectations and earn his PGA TOUR membership at season’s end.

[Music] he’s a tall man he’s got the talent being 68 is not normal for golf it’s definitely an adjustment there’s no doubt about that the height runs in the family that’s for sure it was just amazing to see this man growing and not stopping you could see there’s something happening he’s getting taller I grew just more than a foot in high school he’s got a big personality he’s got the length I think he would stack up against anybody using the god-given talents that I’ve got playing to the best of my ability I don’t know what my Peak holds [Music] yet my dad’s side of the family is originally from German I moved down to South Africa a long long time ago we’ve got a lot of interesting history in George my grandfather he was a wer now doctor and opened up the hospital and became mayor after that it’s a childhood I finally remember and it was a really amazing time in my life it’s called the Bri it’s kind of the similar version of barbecue it’s just on wood instead of gas we’re going to mainly just cook some lamb chops and sausage that’s pretty much like a go-to thing for me it’s for most people in South Africa the word Bri means a lot more than just cooking meat on wood it’s more of a kind of social thing it’s a gathering it’s family gathering a lot of who I am was because of my parents I was brought up the right way and I’ve kind of been taught and ingrained that certain things are more important than the success I have on the golf [Music] course [Music] [Music] when he started walking he was just after a ball and he was a very active little boy and everybody just loved him but strong world for sure and goget you could see it my dad fell in love with the game when I was born I was on the golf cart before I could remember golf kind of became our bonding thing for a long time I was the youngest and the only son we had a big tree he was driving to get the ball over the tree so I said if you can hit it over the tree then you can come and play with me he hit it over the tree but he hit it into the neighbor’s car he dented the car [Music] we had a rental in fan court and that was great for Chris in the sense because they had a proper coach that I got right facilities there it’s a massive piece of property it’s a true Championship golf course no blades not perfectly cut it’s special that we have this kind of thing espe place for me every single time I play doesn’t get [Music] old I’ve luckily spent some time in Holiday at at a beach called Harold’s Bay my uncle has a family beach house there and and just around the corner from Ernie and his DS I got to see the other side of Ernie El’s it was really special kind of be around someone that I looked up to back then he was my role model we go from house to house down there we all kind of family it’s unbelievable I mean to come from this little town here and to have this kind of Talent come out of this area it’s quite incredible he has that Big Time game and that’s only going to propel him he’s done all the right things it’s now just to pull the trigger whenever that’s going to be see it’s incredible how an idol or a person of interest can make that big of an influence on a kid I’ve got a foundation G player as a foundation we just got a really good systems in place in South Africa starting from grassroot level of the game it’s got a big part of why I love golf is this area and how I grew up playing here start of high school I started joining the lisis foundation the academy was founded here so we come out here and practice a bun the academy was founded way back in 2009 for creating opportunities for youngsters growing up in the area how about one of you guys go grab your clubs and we’ll hit one okay come let’s go that kind of gave me an amazing structure to be better and constantly practice and find true my game well I didn’t oh that’s better than mine that’s perfect right there growing up in South Africa and probably not having all the opportunities that an American kid has a kid that wants to do better grow his talent it was so instrumental and and helped me grow as a person and I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them it’s like a family they must never stop having fun because if you have fun on the golf course then you play better if you play better you get more confidence and eventually you’ll become a great golfer like Kristen there we go good stuff it’ll be a big goal for me in my life where if I can change one kid’s life by giving him opportunity or just giving me extra time day that’s really important giving back and changing other people’s lives pical point is the pivo beach of South Africa Kings was kind of my playground I I grew up and I enjoyed playing here I could just play around fool around do my own thing I he’s very fond of discipline and routine never had to actually tell him to go and practice and do things like that somehow my mom dug them out last night I’ve got my second set that I started playing with we’re going to hit some shots with that on the Range and act like I’m a four-year-old again not bad that’s actually not bad I’m really impressed it’s the most Whoopi thing I I might break it if I swing hard when I got to high school in eighth grade I started realizing that golf was always number one for me if I really want to make it work I put this in the bag that’s actually not bad it really isn’t growing that much I felt like my swing changed every week I mean my clubs changed every 6 months so everything about my golf swing change constantly all my irons are an inch and a half longer which is physically the longest they can go if you make clubs any longer than that it kind of gets to a point where it’s almost uncontrollable my 3ws actually stock and driver is like I think a quarter inch longer obviously golf is a sport of es and flows and the difference between good and bad was so big at the time probably around the age of 16 17 I started playing really really good golf and I started realizing that college was an option for me I was lined up for like four recruiting visits at the time and Georgia Tech was not part of it Nori stain he’s on a cgf College go Fellowship he gave me a call and said hey you you got to come and visit Atlanta and come and visit Georgia Tech South Africa I’ve spent two years there on a church mission so I’ve got an affinity for the country walked in and welcomed with some offer con and it just kind of hit it off I learned that he spent some time in South Africa that was really special and I was kind of set and stwn after that I wasn’t going to go anywhere else I really can’t think of very many people that I’ve watched that had that much ability I’ve never had a guy here with um the servant attitude that he possesses it’s a really selfless attitude and he’s been a tremendous leader and a teammate we played a bit that is his biggest goal the number one spot he need to manage that he need to make sure that he’s on top form for the last men he knows what he has to do and we just behind him there’s one semester left and there’s a lot of on the line so it’s just keep on doing what I’m doing if I don’t get the top one spot I think the confidence I have in myself that I will get to the PJ tour if I work hard enough we are very proud because he works very hard I went one college event in my 2 and a half years prior to that so I feel like I was getting close to really breaking through had five second place finishes that year I was playing a lot of good golf but just kind of not getting it done but the Stars kind of started aligning that week the rest is history I’ve experienced something similar because he won the South African amateur in Port Elizabeth he stole the youngest ever to have won that tournament there I saw you know he can grind it [Music] out this is a third shot for Lampert at 14 about that it’ll be a long time before I forget that Thursday afternoon was funny me so I went and I oh my goodness it was like mind buling it was so amazing see my name and the top of leader were working down 18 it truly was something special and it was a motivational boost to me that that hey my good golf is is good enough to compete against anyone in the world leading a major I think that’s got a partial effect to why I didn’t play that great on Friday that was a big lesson I learned of how to deal with that we’ll put it a test at Augusta but I’m an amateur playing the Masters very few people could say [Music] that I’m doing the lazy method I’m throwing into um just like this I’m throwing it in it’s pretty easy I’m not a big cooker but I I can Bry so we’re all done cooking let’s dig in it’s going to be a little steamy action here let’s eat here and uh have fun with it amen we have strong values in the house we taught him to be humble and not to think that his talents is his own he actually gets it from God God decided many years ago that Christal will become a pro because it’s a god-given talent you got the talent you’ve proven you can play with the big guys you’ve done it in college you’ve done it in the Pro level your talent is going to take care of it I just want our son to be happy it’s not all about winning and fame and money it’s being happy and living your life he mustn’t play golf to make money must play golf because he likes it and he loves golf enjoy Golf and ensure that he gives back thanks boys thanks for joining me in the last two holes I appreciate it it was [Music] fun playing to the best of my ability and using the god-given talents that I’ve got reaching my Peak whether that is 14 Majors or winning one PJ tourn event I don’t know what my Peak holds but if I can reach the peak of my ability in 40 years from now sit down on a chair and a porch somewhere in my little house and say hey I’ve worked as hard as I could have that’s true success for me

  1. Love seeing these courses from my home town. Absolutely amazing how much talent has come from this part of SA. Best courses in Africa! Good luck Christo, from George!
