Timothy low here very excited to be bringing to you some men’s golf from South Korea it’s one of the biggest events of the year for the kpj tour and also it’s a co- sanction event with the Japanese tour the jgto so some of the best and brightest from the Land of the Rising Sun here in South Korea this is Kazuki Higa who does have a kpga title and an Asian tour title to his name won the shinan dong open two years ago at the coma Country Club second shot up the hill here for heger not the tallest man you’re going to see in a golf course but my word can he control that golf ball although does not get it onto the correct level of this green you’re going to notice that a lot around namchin Chon Country Club really really slopey surface has got to be in the correct sections if you want to leave yourself reasonable looks now this is the winner of the makong open hongte Kim in a playoff over Sha latit chinam of Thailand a few months ago slightly out of position there but that’s a nicely played pitch coming off a runner-up finish at the kpga championship last week at A1C this really was the man who should have left Namo country club with the meong open title back in May jungan Lee disastrous closing round for him still seeking a first title of the year he’s a former winner of this Championship nicknamed Iron Man for his prodigious Talent with his irons just quickly swing back across for the birdy look of Chinese player y w Chun jumping up well short there one of the special invites into the field this week now always a popular player Jung wam although not giving his fans much to cheer about today three over bar through eight that one should come back off the slope down you come down you come that is certainly much more like it for the man who top the Genesis points another Talent from across the North Sea taii Nai Tani just tripped in for birdie at 10 golf is a silly game like that you find an unlikely birdie and looks like a fairly straight forward conversion but you can see it’s flanked by all sorts of trouble thick trees to the right penalty areas to the left and this hole just gently Works its way uphill all the way Fairway does tilt a little from right to left but you can see that Mammoth green plenty of humps and Hollows there the pin today 27 Paces on from the front and just seven from the left so it’s on the call it the third ledge of this four tiered green so distance control absolutely critical if you want to leave yourself a decent look at a birdie three it has to be said Pace currently set by sangyong Kim after an opening round of 66 P 71 this layout came with just one bogey on his car that’s your Defender Champion jho Yang one of two titles he back last season that’s just safely put down the left hand side of the Fairway now last week’s winner the kpga champion gum John looks like he’s got driver out Yang went with three wood to the incredibly talented season veteran the 43y old Hiroshi AATA six-time winner on the Japanese tour picked up his sixth title in ibaraki earlier this month at the Mori building cup roshi he only had half his Fairway so far today one hitting a little left okay not by much that’s fine for iatan just over 740 million Japanese Yen banked in his illustrious career here back to hega up ahead on the green this for birdie for the 29 year old races that one Past this supremely talented yuben Jang to get this maybe to that point and it should take that downhill slop and whoa goodness Wu Kim grabbed a piece of the cup but it remains above ground this is a excellent birdie opportunity John three Higa puted from said that victory at namul Country Club at the makong open was so important for him just to prove to people that he wasn’t a one-trick pony he could play real golf as well as screen birdie there nicely hole two wins on the kpga to a slow start today but he’s starting to string some birdies together H Tech Kim up the hill you come hasn’t had a miscut so far this season had some good Pace there always found if you ever had the chance to go and play screen golf one of the hardest things to do is actually figure out how to putt cuz you are just putting into a screen and trying to work out how long is a 6m putt how long is a 15 M but like I said he can play some pretty good golf on an actual golf course in his own right now to start the back nine there 534 m per 510 lots of trouble down the left hand side so lots of players going to be laying up back into this Fairway section on the right hand side with three Woods hybrids even driving irons don’t think we’re going to see too many people going for this screen into the layup is also not easy with the Fairway cambering from right to left big old rock wall on the right don’t want to go there there’s trouble left as well it’s a big old green this 10th 51 Paces deep in the pin well right in the middle of it today on that second level we have seen a few players use the slope long to try and funnel the ball back down towards that pin won this championship at the chib Sumi Golf Course last year giho close eye on that cuz it’s a little left but he’s going to be okay albeit get me out of that left hand rough for his second shot turn that over a little bit more than he would have liked [Music] John this one squeaking a little bit right for jho oh it gets a friendly kick and well that’s okay so we wat in the left rough Yang in the right rough just split the difference Gallum John so we go up to heer this is where he is very very economical such good distance control with his wedges that hold off follow through o just leaks it a touch right well his countryman taii naani did chip in from there he is not best pleased with that missing the Green from inside 100 met with wedge in hand now yubin Chang up at the 11th looking to try and keep that birdie run going oh all over it now Ham on 10 okay down here come this is going to gather lots of Peace fine shot there from Jung wo jungan Lee looks like he’s on a slight Downs slope which does tend to knock the ball flight down ever so slightly 12 keep chanu operating out of the middle of the Fairway once again fine shot there excellent distance control from Chan wo I had his wife cing for him so the early part of last season to Ho yang said it just relaxed his mind kept him not thinking about golf all the time this lay Up’s going to get his attention he’s coming out of that right rough balls above his feet he can see the the tilt of the Fairway from right to left so usually when the ball’s above your feet a right handed Goa it does exaggerate a little draw add into the fact that it’s not got much loft on that iron being a some kind of mid long iron I’ll try and hold on to that club face and keep that rough and slope from turning this ball over uh-oh looked like it was left oh dear where’s that ended up for the defending champ well intentions are clear here Kazuki he’s got the flag stick out up on the green touch aggressive there really was trying to make that there another tester happy to know that gum John did find the fairy with his t-shot is he waiting for the green to clear I wonder thought I would say around 2 70 odd M the Green from there that would be a big hit a lot of trouble is it really necessary to chance something this early in the championship jungan Lee gets one to drop there lovely putt takes him to three underpar he really is Du a win this season he’s play play Such fine golf hasn’t been able to get anything out of it it’s just going to be a layup for John that’s the sensible play it’s only Thursday afternoon don’t have to start swinging for the fences just yet [Music] come on Jung still not an easy part to Hole has to start this outside left lip to start building some positive momentum this is that one low again and I just see frustration starting to Bubble to the surface so we water just has to be wary of that tree about 100 yards in front of him just a little r of it try and turn a draw around the corner kept it under it find recovery from the water is this one of these rounds of golf that Kazuki hea is having that really grinds you down it wears you out having to have these lengthy bar saving butts just to stay at even [Music] par but he keeps making them could save at nine and now at 10 but heer it’s birdies he wants it’s awfully tightly bunched at four underpar euben Jang has a chance to get alongside sangy young Kim in a share of the lead at five underpar but it’s Kim who’s won clear here on day one at num chun chun for for for for for for thankfully that layup was okay for jhoy Yang although he’s a little bit further back in the Fairway than he would have liked 128 left takes a big firm bounce but not going to roll back back onto the green adjust into the fridge well there’s your answer now euben Jang to tie the lead at 11 oh dear that looked in that looked in all the way he can scarcely believe it great try but he’s going to remain in that Log Jam for second jump you know what you have to do here throw it a little bit long and reel it back you can hear How firm some of these green are getting sounded like that was pitching in a concrete car [Music] park jump up to naani little bit further up the back nine 184 M Par 3 13th P all the way back left got a lot of Hang Time on that ball as well from the elevated T but that’s a fine shot from nabetani so water last play into [Music] 10 pitch that a little bit further past than gon did into that softer up slope and as a result gets that one to back up a lot more but we’ve seen how much that put breaks still a very well played shot from the 43 year [Music] old jump up to the 11th Hall second shot coming in here for Mion Park the best ball Strikers the kpj to referenced by the fact he is 15th in the greens and regulation statistic so IM that it’s just good distance control you be bang online but if you’ve got the wrong number more likely to miss a green than anything pin High usually leaves you with a pretty reasonable look at birdie [Music] see here [Music] up so we missed one green so far today last year’s Japan PGA Championship winner just a little wide there not a tough leave for chho yank it’s going to be a pretty standard par five two time winner on tour [Music] be Jong Park kpg rookie who’s having a very fine start to his professional career he’s three underpar just through the back of the 13th green slippery chip coming down the hill the judge nicely by Park testy one for John downhill working from left to right [Music] so just a long eye off the 11th t for jungan Lee lay this one up right at the top of the hill give yourself a nice flat live for your second so I’d say this is still a good cup outside the left Edge for water [Music] beautifully hold one his first title as a professional 10 years ago at the Fuji sanki classic what a career it’s been ever since then twice a winner of the Sega Sami cup and twice a winner of the crowns to of the biggest events on the Japanese tour now he got also going with three iron like Le finding the Fairway naby tiny after that delightful t- shot at 13 has this opportunity to get to three under just slides that which he almost uses like a broomstick a style very much his own it looks like H old Kim back at 10 couple of kpga to titles to his name including the shinhan dong during Co HTI just a little shoulder Tosh shoulder W you feel from [Music] 82 first look of the day at mikumu horow Y and he’ll get himself into red figures quite big on YouTube mikumu horikawa is a very good fan base there there’s a lot of behind the scenes vlogging and a couple of instruction videos as well for par yet to drop a shot today Ki Hirata alas the commentator’s curse strikes again back the birdie he just picked up at 10 with that supp you call it a three p m 11 just a knee knocker left for Parks par oh dear is that cup a little smaller than all the others nin Chon where the can violent lip out in a row we’ve seen on this hole so bothata and park will drop shots we’ll have you Chang at the 12 award looking lie here downhill everything runs away from him once it pitches on the green that’s a bit of a mistake tried to get a little too cute with it and now that’s no guaranteed to tup for Bogi back to 11 and heer start this right edge of the green try and turn it with the slope striking it well but the distance control has been very uner likee so far on Thursday now this is not fun for you or Chun just got to try and stop this on the top of that hill and hope for the best [Music] almost impossible to get that one within 6 fet about as good as the Chinese player could have done from that spot got to deal with a lot of elevation changes around this layout keeps you on your [Applause] toes bird to get inside the top 10 oh with confidence right in the middle for hung tick Kim starts his back nine as he did his front nine with a birdie just got to be wary of a bit of a fly Li here for Jungle ham it does keep a very good disposition J always smiling around the golf course that smile May betray his true thoughts about his standard of play so far this opening round now hanbel take to one [Music] absolute stinker of a day 10 overpar through a dozen holes and gosh down near the bottom of this 144 player field now Jang important butt just to try and limit the damage he has struggled with his putting in the past but it looks like the demons have been exorcised that’s a well hold putt he’ll give up one of his four shots he’s picked up on the front line but still new opportunities upcoming for the 21y old now heer get this one within three ft you’ve done well he’s done very well off near the C path here at 13 for CH Kim so this one’s going to have to write the top of a ridge for most of singy young Kim who has been enjoying his View at the top of the Hana Bank Invitational leaderboard after a lovely round of 66 this morning but the Evergreen inchin Wang and taii yosida have gotten themselves up to four underp and what is now an eight-way tie for second place which at one point included this man been Jack but he’s just coming off a bogy at 12 back left pin should suit his eye very nicely likes to turn it from right to left fine shot John second into the power 4 11th one of the better shots we’ve seen into this left pin today see a lot of players going long now inent Park second to the [Music] 12th this should be good this should be really good look out Yin Park a fabulous shot there [Music] water most of his weight’s going to be on that lead foot with this downhill light balls lineing cleanly back of the green at 14 for naani oh chipped in at 10 almost repeated the feet there at 14 y severe ball above feet lie here this makes it a little awkward with a short club like a gat wedge or a lob wedge that is nicely played a scary t- shot at 12 for jungan Le you come through this shoot of trees does doubling a little from left to right there you go looks like he’s just going with three wood so with our featured groups through the turn here in the open around at the hanab bank Invitational it’s still sing Yong Kimu sits one clear of eight players tied for second at four underpar for for for for for for rat has left himself another testy one for par at 12 and unfortunately it’s a carbon copy of the party hit on 11 so it’s going be backto back drop shots for KI Hirata Geo to get to three under [Music] lost that one right early straight up Miser [Music] there spectacular second shot had three written all over it for yunin Park [Music] we water coming uphill this one should peel to the right as it makes its way up that [Music] rise oh straight in for Hiroshi I’ll count that up that makes it nine players tied at four under surely someone’s going to catch s Yong Kim by the end of play today that’s three on the bounce for Hiroshi aat youve been Jang to get back to for under that was a positive stroke perhaps a bit too positive there you been so follow that one if you can gotam John knows exactly what this putt does was on pretty much the exact same line as he was not to be for John little bit racy with that birdie but now Jang for B okay all Jan Lee five top 10 and six top 15s through nine starts this season for the 32y old so I said this was makeable only if you hit it hard enough keny he was on a nice line but he’ll stop the rot of Bogies with a pate the par 313th J Park got to give this a full blooded whack up that steep slope All Things Considered be well judged but H cower could he start to string them together but at 13 for the 31y old from Kagawa does have four winds on the Japanese T but none since November 2022 we water a second to 12 we’ seen a couple players get close [Music] on a nice line just a half a club short there for hirosi [Music] jho nice level lie here for Yang it looks like he might have pulled that ever so slightly it’s going to miss the slope o and that could be some fun in games but hang on a minute it’s trying to take the slope it’s just taking the wrong one so this can get awkward but well below his feet just got to judge this light it’s going to come out dead is going to come out hot uhoh was that a flyer forgot I’m John I think it was and that is all kinds of trouble there the kpga champion you been fourth shot now at 14 Goodness Me must have had some Adventures here at the par four but oh what a par for you bin Jang no pictures on the score card it’s just going to say four at the 14th well nine players within one of sangyong Kim who continues to lead the way here on Thursday at the hanab bank Invitational for for for for for so well through the back of 12 green went gam John’s second shot and oh that’s he’s going to ping pong it around this green cuz that’s now off the other side and what was so easy last week at A1 CC he is finding a little challenging on this back nine now heer at 13 four wins back in 2022 on route to player of the year on the Japanese tour winless in 2023 oh that’s more like it from Kazuki hega sugy just that one top 10 was talking about this year in ibaraki now we water a slightly easier shot than the one that godam John just had was pitching uphill use that bank oh it sticks up on the top and don’t think he can believe it either [Music] good experience Bag Man there for IAT Yoshi has looped for the likes of the bashful Prince Rio isikawa on several occasions now jungan Lee to get back in the right direction after his bogey at the 12th this is t-shot at 13 so fourth shot for John at 12 [Music] check in with chanu Kim who’s up at the 15th pined eight in the front portion of the green just 15 from the front edge use that one short of the front edge I just want to get this one over the crest for jho Yang slope and gravity you’re going to do the rest it’s not on a bad line not a bad line at all just short in the [Music] Jaws so papart now for IAT to stay in that Log Jam at four under that’s a pure rule that was looking in all the way for Hiroshi IAT I was working off a run of three straight birdies but that power is going to feel just as good for the 43y old six-time winner now up to yunin Park second shot at the 14th gets it all the way onto the back tier of this green good shot so to drop only one at 12 got on John okay slides back to even jungan slow putt up and over this little spine working from right to left easy easy okay nabetani did hold his putt for par at 50 now is second to 16 that’ll take the correct slope and funnel down to about 15 ft he go to get himself into red figures ni yeah well done good putt finally Kazuki hega into red figures this week in South Korea thick looking line the left R for beong park at 16 he’s only got 71 M to go oh dear through the back and that’s going to be a test of his short game skills everything sloping away from him once that ball pitches on the green Hong TI Kim flirted with trouble at 12 not taking a drop off the cart path the angle’s actually not bad from there you can fire it into the slope is that going to bank around it’s going to try oh well suppose you gave him that put for birdie with his t-shot in the air he would have been glad now Sun pil Yun first look at him this week got his first Victory couple of months back the kpga to it was a wonderful week for him the pr me open the season opener waed six years for a first title as a professional and it was well worth the wait wats up certainly the man with the hot handed now featured group t-shop at the par 3 13th plays a little shorter than 184 being downhill that one’s going to come up short for IAT at least a club shy GI ho looks like a 79 perhaps an eight I love that Tempo it’s just so effortless unhurried I love that shot too brilliant from jho what it’s been pretty this Fairway does sort of angle from left to right but it also cambers from the left hand side you play to this elevated green but as we saw from Kazuki Higa a couple of moments ago this pin just itching to be attacked in that middle tier of this three tiered green you’ve got some options to it in that slope long try and use the Contour to your advantage and give yourself a good look at a birdie or in heger’s case an eagle to so with the elevated to you see a lot of players opting for less than driver [Music] [Applause] after that Great Escape at 15 I said a lot of players were leaning away from driver wonder if that bogey on 15 has anything to do with this Club selection cuz it’s an awfully tight landing area for gam John with this club [Applause] he’s found it here go not sure why your playing partn is hold out for an eagle too not going to bother jungu hand manages to stick this one close easy easy seen that so many times today tumbles through the green that looks like a pretty poor Li for H company size up their approach shots into this [Music] 16th somewhere in between the right edge of the TV Tower and the flag [Music] stick little worm its way down the slope nicely for hirosi he’s been in such fine control of this golf ball today we have a new solo leader Kung Parks just made it backto back birdies he now leads by one at 6 under power through 13 holes GI Yang have to see this is probably the last really good birdie opportunities the players are going to get on this back nine [Music] today straight over the stick on 16 for [Music] Yang Taki Yoshida to move alongside park at 6 under slippery one down the slope burns the edge great try indeed for attacki yid yeah the driver off the te it’s going to be coming with a little bit less spin from 58 m tra a sort of soft floater rip that back with a ton of spin got on John pretty much does things his own way he’s going to have I think is the longest of the three birdie buts of this group at 16 [Music] chanuk Kim got home in two at this par 518th but he’s back at even par now after a drop shot this is an eagle opportunity for the big man lost it a little low but simple to putt birdie is going to be good enough to see him into second round action at one under par then it slip a little on the back line but he’ll end his day with a birdie four still a reason to smile there Chan 71 not a bad start with three birdies in a row kilam park has hit the summit of the leaderboard and six and depart still has plenty of golf left to play but here G on John this birding butt at the 16th he got to be struck firmly or this is going to dive off to the right very quick no there it is the gamble does not pay off for [Music] John go back to 18 and hopefully a birdie for Utah kosa yeah that’s a 77 to here just came out slow on him so hard to trust that you have to hit it a lot harder especially we just see that that slope past the pin that everything towards the front edge of the green so Under Pressure to consolidate that Birdie on 16 with a power at 17 back out to the front line Second shot into the ninth for Yoshida got the steep slope to this elevated green with a pin on the left that’s a fabulous shot from taii yosida so he’ll have a butt C around to 64 or 65 excuse me couldn’t believe that that ball didn’t take the slope and feed down to the pin Jung W Le a result this is for birdie bit longer than he would have deserved it was a well struck t- shot but it’s just a par Jung W let’s hope it’s not a case of one step forward one step back for ham [Music] oh just enough on it thanks his lucky stars that’s a par three Hong Tech just in that right rough on 16 so it limits the amount of control he can get on this going allow for some release or trying to use that back stop is the wrong slope there Hong tick now that is going to be a slow putt so there’s been some movement moving and shaking on the first page of the leaderboard but unfortunately for the 2022 make young open Champion it’s been a day that he’d much rather forget Chan men Jong thir 13 over bar playing the last two wins last year for Jung it’s been a rather forgettable 2024 thus far now Jang greenside bunker you can land this about 15 ft short little bit right of the pin try and use that slope but everyone just pitches it too deep into this green and it kicks through into the back rough is going to find the section that Kazuki heiger put it from a little bit earlier on eager did all out for his part so he stayed at three under chanman very much like to see the end of this round as quickly as possible consolation birdie for Chan MJ at the 18th goodness me look at that scorecard at 11 at the 10th and the 12th at the 11th yikes goo see if that birdies put a little bounce back in his step not bad certainly had it on a very nice light so You’ been J post around to 67 nice Sandy Birdie on the 18th and that’s a a positive way to end the back nine for euin Jang 67 leaves him at 4 under inside the came well Off the Mark at 17 water longest of the three t- shots doesn’t like [Music] this it’s okay though no I’m done par for Kim much like gam John has been slipping down the leaderboard at this back line with a couple of very costly bogies that’s going to be four a bogy 17 one point within one of the lead he rolls that one in he’s going to be five back here is John lot of sand to come over this cavernous bunker left of the 18th green he’s got a little bit of room to work with between the edge of that trap and the pin so not as difficult a shot as it could be that’s nicely played H for a rare birdie at 17 done H Kim so options are plenty for Hiroshi do you want to play a low bump and run do you want to putt it do you want to try and fly it up to that ledge with a bit of spin looks like it’s option three for iata there like a standard 35 yd pitch one hop and a bit of check pretty nicely judged H tick to drop just one shot at the par three it’s a third boy and a for stretch for Hong TI Kim slips him back to one under looks like he might actually be in the rough outside of the bunker which does make the shot a little bit easier [Music] lot of grasp between Club face and ball
