[Music] [Applause] [Music] hey Chicago what do you say it’s the chgo Cubs postgame Show podcast the Cubs have done it Again Luke stuck meire Ry her Cody delmendo and Kevin Wells running the ones and twos and yeah there it is again the Cubs have done it again now 32 and 35 on the season another blown save another game where they couldn’t score runs and we are on the anniversary month of 2011 when Carlos and brano and St Louis said we stinks and that’s all I have to say and right now this team stinks period that’s it they’re playing bad baseball they don’t have I don’t know if it’s they don’t have good enough players or they’re just not playing well right now but the bottom line is the team stinks there’s there’s no way to sugarco it like you can watch we knew an hour ago watching that game we sat there watching it we knew an hour ago this game was a loss because why you can you can say the bullpen bad it’s true you can say they don’t have a closer it’s true you can say they don’t play fundamental baseball it’s true but they don’t score enough runs yeah when you when you’ve got a when you’re up two nothing and your your starter left with six shutout Innings you’re supposed to win the game but the reason that they’ve played 25 no 26 one-run games this year this this should have been a one-run game is because they don’t score enough runs and they don’t score enough runs because they don’t have good enough hitters it’s really not that complicated look we you could you could put all the stats you want into it right you you can look at all the stats you want you can look at woba whatever anybody wants to look at this team doesn’t have good enough hitters and I don’t know if they’re going to fix it or not but right now Cody I don’t even I don’t even want want to let you start talking because I know we’ll be here for three hours either you’re not going to talk at all or we’re going to be here for 3 hours I’ll let Ryan talk first he’s GNA he’s going to take he’s going to take that’s probably see how he’s he’s getting wiser in his old age he’s going to take a breath for a second frustrating loss yeah yeah what you said is basically what I feel but let Ryan go I mean I the thing is like I don’t have much else to add except for what you said like they’re just not scoring enough runs and I you know I’m looking at just the numbers and because I like to look at numbers and like sometimes that’s all you can do I had looked at it yesterday obviously on the off day so the number this is numbers from the Tuesday game the second game in that Milwaukee series overall the offense had improved they weren’t best in baseball by any means but like WRC plus were 10th in baseball in that stretch with the 110 WRC plus um overall it had improved to numbers where they were like past the middle of the of baseball closer to you know mostly top 10 depending on where you’re looking at um but they were still even just scoring runs at in the middle of of of the league and when you look at it the the main issue is is just not being able to uh get get runners in in scoring position regardless of the amount of outs that are in uh that the situation is one out two they tonight one for seven 1 for seven I believe um and again this is this are numbers of the last previous I think it’s 10 games or something like that 11 games since that second game in Milwaukee so it’s not including today but uh with runners in scoring position a WRC plus of 56 which is 27 which was 27th in baseball in that stretch Ops of 546 27th in baseball in that stretch uh let me just look at runs for looking at run sake 17th in baseball uh 37th in baseball or 37 runs 17th in baseball uh in that stretch with Runners and scoring position in terms of scoring runs uh but they had the third most plate appearances with runners in scoring position in that stretch so that just tells you they weren’t getting those runners in at a at a high enough rate based on how many plate appearance they actually had uh with runners in scoring positions so that’s that’s been still the biggest issue even though overall number I know it doesn’t feel like it when you’re watching right but like overall the offense had played better like the offense had hit better obviously when they’re putting up 10 hits in a game that like that seems like they should be doing better uh but they’re not scoring enough runs they’re not U coming through with the big hit so to speak in those situations the slug isn’t there so they’re not blowing teams out I don’t even remember what I looked at it but I looked earlier in the G in the day and since that first game in Boston that Friday game which is like that kind of end point that we’ve kind of used as far as like when the offense was really good and when the offense kind of fell off um they only have I think it was like three wins of four more runs in that stretch so that’s a month and a half now of baseball where I mean they weren’t obviously winning a ton of games anyway just because we know what the record is and what the record’s been since then uh but they’re as far as just being able to blow teams out they’re not so they’re not blowing teams out which which means that they’re using some of their more higher leverage arms just generally more than they would want to um but we know like a guy like ncys he’s not an All-Star they didn’t bring him in as an All-Star closer right like he was a really good setup man for Houston for a couple years and and the Hope was that he’d be able to thrive in that role still uh but he’s obviously had his struggles and and today was just another example of that um you don’t have Julian Merryweather there you can’t use mark letter Jr every every day adbert Wast is hurt and he was bad before that um they don’t have a a totally reliable Bullpen so you’re putting the bullpen in position where they’re trying to protect leads basically every day or keep you close because you didn’t score enough runs and you’re already trailing late in the game um and then so that that gets magnified uh play like you know some of some of the plays that Miguel amay has um messed up behind the plate like today today was a tough one because he did block the ball just didn’t know where it was and then kicked the ball away like that Runner wouldn’t have gone had he not kicked the ball away I don’t want to give him the benefit of the doubt because we do we have seen issues with blocking the ball especially in critical situations so I don’t want to give him too much of the benefit of the doubt but he today just felt to me like more like if the ball was three inches the other way he wouldn’t have kicked that ball away right so whatever but like stuff like that gets magnified because at the end of the day you’re playing so many close games because you’re not scoring a bunch of runs and that’s tough that’s that’s tough on the rest of the team when you’re not coming through with when the you know theame games on the line or you’re in a high leverage situation you got runners in scoring position you have a chance to um you know add on to the lead you already have and you can’t do it and so like a performance like Jameson tyion had today maybe wasn’t his um greatest performance I I thought you know he got he was fortunate some of those pitches that caught too much of the plate didn’t get didn’t uh didn’t get beat on but it was overall a good performance from him that we kind of expected because he has been good for him kept him in the game kept him in the lead and then and you know you see what happens and and while there’s other for sure other things wrong with the team right now it’s just like it’s kind of it feels like the same story every every game where they’re just not putting putting up enough runs to just like feel comfortable especially early in a game to just feel comfortable with the lead it just it doesn’t feel like it’s happening any game yeah sorry I took up I took up a lot of time on that okay we all did listen I mean this game summed up I think what sums this game up is that inning PCA let off with you know was like a swinging bunt or whatever and he you know he’s fast and he gets to First and they the Rays make a critical air there with effin not catching the ball and you know then they play LA lacad desal and he’s heads up and he finds himself on second base with zero outs then Amaya hits the ball hard to the opposite field and he at least gives you a productive out and it allows him with that speed to get to Third Base then what happens Mike talkman strikes out and then of course seya hits it hard but it’s on the ground and it’s right at the short stop and you don’t get a run all I know is that if you enter the inning Up 3 to one in the ninth inning it’s a lot different feeling than entering the inning in the ninth inning up 2 to one and then there are other Innings too uh so I don’t know like that them not getting PCA in that inning just kind of sums up my entire frustration with the offense over the last month and a half man like how many times have we seen that guys get in scoring position less than two outs and they don’t get them in how many times it’s to me that that’s why they lost the game I think there’s a super chat in there that says something along the lines of like I knew when that happened they were going to lose the game and like honestly dude like I’m not I don’t disagree what I was going to ask when when did you know man in your heart this was a loss I thought it was over whenever when he kicked the ball I already knew no when he kicked the ball I already in my head was like this is a l yeah I was getting the Vibes of how many guys were leaving on base and not and not getting the big hit yeah and as someone who is a believer in the baseball Gods when you don’t take advantage of opportunities things like [ __ ] comes back around what comes around comes back around and tyone was great but also like he also got a little lucky on some of the balls that guys hit off him too you know and then the Cubs I think no one wants to hear it right now but you know how the hell does that ball that they hit in that ninth inning the Rays wow how’s that ball go over but how the hell does Dansby Swanson’s ball not go over the the fence the inning before that one looked like he definitely hit it harder and I’m just you know yelling about [ __ ] that doesn’t matter at this point but like it it’s a it’s a little it’s like things like that too that have been going on over the last month like even when they do hit the ball hard sometimes it’s just like ride at someone or it’s at the warning track and it’s just like Christopher Morell is the only one who can hit a home run for this team that feels like it’s a no doubter him and Michael Bush it’s like those are the only two it feels like are hitting home runs for this team and you’re like that is absolutely out of here and it’s just like it’s frustrating man like yeah I think people in the YouTube chat are listening probably think I’m going to come on here and and and yell a lot about I’m just I’m I’m kind of just numb I’m back in the numb stage like is we’re three games under 500 the and it’s the it’s a different story different day man like everyone probably mad at the Bullpen I mean yeah nerys can’t give up four runs in the ninth inning to lose the game but like you got to score runs to win baseball games man you got to score runs you got to score more than two runs on the road to win baseball games okay I think it’s like the way tyone pitch the way he was nessi came in was pretty good and the opportunities they had early in the game earlier in the game to add on like nerys shouldn’t have been in that spot it shouldn’t have been a position where you needed nerys to come in I think to answer your question for me it was like um the seventh inning Bellinger doubles and Amaya can’t get around from first oh yeah and then Morell who Morell had a good DayDay he had the Home Run he scored the second run like he was the best offensive player for the Cubs today that you know without him that that’s not even a game um but then he struck out on three pitches with second and third two outs which that was obviously one of the few or one of the handful of opportunities they had with runners in scoring position but to me that was like you really needed to add on in that inning it’s top of the seven like you know it’s get the game’s getting tighter at this point like you really needed to add on and again not pinning the blame on Morel because he provided basically the rest of the offense for him but I think for me right there is when I got that feeling like man this is this also is a lot of what like my just overall frustration with you know some of the bad luck too because seya hit one6 all the way out to right field but right into a glove and it’s like that was one of the two out like Morell came up there with two outs you had T you had Amaya who let off the inning with a walk then topin flew out say it if that ball that sayah hits drops like that inning is completely different with Bellinger coming up but like again I’m not even reallying making an excuse for SE in that in that situation it’s just like we’ve seen a lot of hard hit balls just like be caught and it just like I it it’s that it’s the fact that even when they when when they have guys in scoring position and you just need a manufacturer run they can’t get it done going back to the PCA inning you know like I don’t know man I I I can’t I I don’t I can’t measure it I can’t explain it it’s just you know like we’re going to get to a bunch of super chats in a second I want to ask you another question Kevin you can answer this too what does this team do well starting nothing right nowar that’s it starting pitch nothing else there’s nothing else they do well yeah something that like everyone didn’t feel good about nothing only the starting pitching is doing their job they don’t hit well they don’t hit well with runners in scoring position they don’t run the bases well they don’t play defense well they don’t slug they don’t slug they do they do other than starting pitching they’re probably lucky to be 32 and 35 and that’s the thing because the the really the most important thing in baseball is good starting pitching those are your pitchers that are going to be pitching wins championships right yeah not if you’re bad at everything else yeah but that’s so when you say they’re probably fortunate to be in this position like in a way yes because they’re starting pitching had has it not been this good especially since the calendar flipped to May they’re probably a lot you know a lot more wins or losses in there right the starting pitching is they they they’ve managed to get it right so far and that is when we talk about just what helps you win in baseball like that’s the most important thing so yes like the the having that having the performances they’ve gotten out of most of their starting pitchers all year has been absolutely just completely necessary like look at sha and the impact he’s had what do they they’re 10 and two when he starts something like that and like would it be like 22 and 33 or something like that when he doesn’t like they’re they’ve needed the question everyone’s asking right now is when does the complacency stop and when does the urgency kick in because this team has found a way to lose in a different way every week it seems like every other game they find a new way to lose and it’s always because of the same three reasons you’re not going to be able to fix all of those reasons but they’re it it’s almost like they’re afraid they’re so afraid to overcompensate when they do have the pieces to go and try new things because right now everything they’re doing is the same it’s the same every night and it it’s not working this this is you’re getting to the point where this is who this team is it’s not the team you saw in April this is getting to the point where this is who they are the thing is dude is that they have no history of showing that they will do something like that I know which is like that goes back to last year that goes back to year before I know the year before they were were a losing team anyway but like you know we I feel like we’re it’s deja vu all over again you know they had issues last year at first base and and obviously at third base and you they had Bullpen issues and stuff and you know they they got they got lucky that Bellinger got hot and they got lucky that you know some guys played better and uh you know Bellinger can play first base so you can afford the DFA Hosmer and Mancini and like they they didn’t do anything until the deadline whenever whenever they realized because Mike tochman made a freaking catch at dead center field in St Louis he did that and they’re like okay I guess we’ll buy so we’ll go trade for jamer candelerio and Jose quas all right that’s it that’s that’s all they that’s all they’ve shown they’ve never shown to be aggressive with anything absolutely nothing you don’t need to be that aggressive that’s what I’m saying you don’t need to go out and trade your best prospects there are still other moves that you can make you cannot keep rolling out some of these guys right now Miguel Amaya is a AAA catcher right now and he started most of the games for you I’m not saying he blew the game tonight he’s been hitting a little bit better but he is a triaa level catcher Jan Gomes is worthy of a DFA that’s a position you can upgrade right now and that would help you win games right now I’m I’m not sure what they’re waiting on there we’re going to get to the super chats we’ll talk more about this uh disappointing lost Cubs lose five to2 they give up all five runs seventh inning and on so uh they had this game one and couldn’t hold on to it get ready for the summertime with first segment I know that the chat has been littered with angry Cubs fans tonight we got a pretty good chat going make sure you subscribe to the chdo sports YouTube page if you haven’t yet do that tonight so you don’t miss any of the shows what do we got Kevin got uh Stephen $2 Jed can go to hell don’t know if I agree with that one it’s just it’s just basball yeah just har but all right overall pretty decent job mean honestly people say that to me on Twitter a lot so I mean that’s Twitter yeah right me and have something in common now2 that’s fairly Justin ble five bucks here is the $5 I was going to put on the Cuffs to win tonight I knew the L was coming when we left PCA on third with one out we can’t lose that’s that’s the guy I was pointing out earlier in the first I don’t disagree with that I think that was the first time I thought this is loss it’s just one of those moments where like you really needed to cash in there yeah and and PCA showed exactly the type of value that he brings to the table I mean he he hits that ball and it looks like a r play but because he’s so fast he put the pressure on the defense to have to make a play and they couldn’t do it and then they that leads to them making another mistake and he finds himself on second base it was like one of the good jav moments right like the magical jaob moments where you’re like man this team is down we’re only scoring two runs a game they need a spark they need an energy guy they need a spectacular play to Rally around and PCA gives you that yeah and you walk away feeling totally dejected at the end what happened after that we know I was just say it’s kind of like when we the way we talked about Morell when he first came up and I know that that they weren’t winning games in that season but it was like the the energy the electricity the spark he was providing like gave like some hope I guess was like oh this is a guy that like is going to inject something into the team and and pca’s been that I know we discussed obviously Kevin you were on that show we talked about the Cub sending him down and just what why they would do that and the reasons that they gave but yeah you are seeing when he’s up what he can do to a lineup and what he can kind of the things he can provide that no one else on the team can and don’t get me wrong he had a bad strikeout but rookies are going to have ups and downs a lot of the stuff that’s going wrong with this team this season should have been seen by all of us in the off season which a lot of people did there’s not enough in the bullpen there’s not enough slug there’s not enough offense they didn’t fill enough of the holes but if these things happen they still could potentially win the central well now we’re also seeing the flip side of that if a lot of these things don’t happen or if some of these things don’t happen they’re not good enough to win the division and it’s going to take some kind of turnaround to get back in that division race in my opinion don’t forget about the PCA steel too early on in the game putting two on with two outs I mean that would have been another opport forcing them to use their challenge in the second and he changes the game he is such an effective weapon to that point though I don’t understand why PCA is not hitting ninth like I understand not putting him lead off or in your T six yeah like he shouldn’t be ahead of Amaya I know like Amaya has started to hit the ball a little bit he had a good series against the Reds whatever but uh PCA if he can do what we just saw tonight on some sort of consistent basis like having that and then having the lineup flip after him that just bring makes his value even better I I he’s not someone that I want to see lead off not yet because he hasn’t begun to really hit yet but if you’re going to play him like play him behind Amaya in the nine hole like that that to me like if there’s any complaints I have about lineups when he’s in there is that I don’t understand why he’s not in the nine hole just because of you know the value that he has in terms of speed and and base running and stuff like that so it is what it is two more Super chats Matt MacIntyre $1.99 almost impossible to only score two runs on 10 hits yes yeah we talked about that a lot on the couch seems like they’ve been doing it and like the few extra base hits they had they were like Bellinger had that extra base hit in that eighth inning we were talking about of course with two outs and of course Amaya is slow as molasses did a poll on Twitter who wins a race migy Montero or migy Amaya most people are saying migy Montero and brother let me tell you that’s sad herb Lawrence wins that RS race Cody doendo or Miguel laaya brother I might beat him out [ __ ] I doubt it I know we learned our L I’m paid to sit here I’m paid to sit here not go play Major League Baseball okay I’m just saying like it it goes back to like if it’s not one thing it’s like yeah when they hit they don’t pitch when they pitch they don’t hit or my numbing or you get it’s one or the other every night or you get the extra base hit when there’s no one on and two outs yes you know like again Amaya was on base when Binger hit that double but of course it’s Maya who’s slower and you know maybe I should be mad at Craig for not pinch hitting or pinch running for him once he got on base I don’t I don’t know but every game’s the same yeah every game feels like it’s the seventh eighth ninth inning in it’s SC they never win a game when we were thinking about that when’s the last time they won a game like six nothing seven nothing saying there was the the Braves game like almost a month ago Homer delete off the game The Last complete good game that this team has played that I can and I I haven’t really missed any games was that Brewers game Sunday Freddy Peralta they shut out the Brewers 5 nothing at Wrigley back in early May that was the last like wow they played great in all three facets that’s that’s six weeks ago since then it’s been like you said it’s always something else they can’t it’s been the same game for six weeks all right let’s take this next Super Chat this Chris casaros cat katsaros Twitter is calling Jed Hoyer Robin right now uh that’s uh all the the all the the Batman Robin stuff okay so I know I don’t disagree I there’s there’s a lot of jet anger on the YouTube chat on Twitter on the radio sometimes on the podcast um where are you with this obviously there have we we mentioned it yesterday obviously there have been some good moves fre agent signing of imanaga good move right there have been some other trades that have been good but they they still have not made a bold move and I don’t know how it cannot be coming soon like I I don’t I don’t say just make trades for no reason if the season is lost but soon sooner or later you’re going to have to change this this roster in some sort of drastic way whether that’s bringing up tons of prospects and dragging out this process even longer or trading some of the prospects and trying to bring in big impactful players for the long term I don’t know what it’s going to be or it’s going to have to be going over the luxury tax and well over it because there’s still too many holes on the team so how much how much blame right now do you want to give Jed Hoyer and how much blame right now do you want to give the $8 million a year manager I don’t know that I’m ready to go there but I was sold that he was going to give us four or five more wins this season with basically the same roster right now not happening it’s a lot of the same stuff yeah I’ll instead of like going through an some massive explanation I’m just going to sit here and ask you a simple question despite all of these great moves that we’ve talked about imanaga free agent signing signing Bellinger to the prove it deal and then resigning him uh trading David Robertson for Ben Brown trading Scott fros for Hayden wisneski uh trading for Michael Bush and yiny Almont we there’s a long list of good trades what has any of that brought nothing exactly like almost almost a playoff appearance that’s that’s the thing is that there at we are at a point where results are starting to matter man like he were he was given this this leash at the trade deadline of 2021 by ownership and then you know some fans who are a little who are rational um well and then obviously 22 was like a season where like okay this is their first right like reset season exactly so like the expectations were significantly lower last uh in 2022 and there were some good things that came from that year and then in 2023 as well and they and they should have made the playoffs they were on Pace for 90 wins in September and we we’ve discussed it enough on why they didn’t make the playoffs right but again they it comes down to results when we’re in year four man like you can make you can win every trade and make every great free agent signing but if it doesn’t lead to wins then what’s the point cool Jed you you you got imanaga for a bargain why is this team losing games you know you can have the second best farm system in baseball but if you’re not going to be aggressive with some of the guys and not use some of them then what’s the point that’s how I feel I mean I don’t I don’t dis agree with that notion is like like I think we also knew like going into this year it wasn’t uh it wasn’t um it’s not contention season I think should have been a division winning I think we yeah I think I I think we all tempered our expectations from being too high but when you’re talking they’re playing well below expectations yeah when you’re talking about a team that like almost made the playoffs yeah you didn’t do didn’t do a ton to improve it in the off season but you did expect you know younger players to come up and contribute and some of these guys especially uh you know a niik Herer right who’s still relatively young to continue to improve and and you know all these guys and I think we had expectations that yeah this team should be a division winner on paper it wasn’t I don’t think we were like looking at as like uh this team is going to run away with the division by any means but like this team can win the division and a division that seems to be or that was that we thought was like yeah it’s not like I I don’t think we thought any team was going to be super super bad and we’re kind of seeing that but we also didn’t think anyone team was going to run run away with it and we thought you know the Cubs could be that but now they’re at the point where’re getting towards that Midway point of the Season where they are still relatively far below the Brewers uh for first for first place in the division like they’re yeah they’re not they’re not playing to the level that we expected going into this year and so that yeah your point is valid that why is this team why has this team not only not taken a step forward from last year but seemed to be a lot a lot of the players honestly seem to have taken a a little bit of a step back I mean there there’s guys that have improved for sure but like some guys have seemed to take a step back um the roster as a whole like it it’s just they’re not playing like a team that took a step forward to we’re going to win the division this year level which is kind of again what we expected and yeah so it’s a valid point of asking the question why is this team not looking much better now than they did June 11th of last season yeah record-wise they are right they’re like five games ahead of where they were last year but like they’re just not looking like a team where we we saw that Team come out of that funk and go on a great run we’re not getting a lot of signs that this team is ready to do that either this year so the the question is when when does the first move come like we know that trades in baseball are rare we know that trades involving top 100 prospects are rare you’re probably not going to see that you’ve seen Jed and Carter both Express patience patience patience patience so we know that they’re going to be patient but there are two immediate upgrade you could make upgrades on this team right now with guys the DJ hers level deal guys who aren’t your top you know Elite prospects that would help your team you have a deep system you have a ton of pitch there you can’t continue to sit on your hands and lose games like this not not in a year where you just PID a manager $8 million you’re supposed to make the playoffs every year Craig council’s your manager otherwise you’re not paying them $8 million a you’re not paying them $8 million to sit in October and I know people say oh it’s only June but these little games man you I don’t think people are sitting here saying oh it’s June though dude even if they are if they were then the YouTube chat wouldn’t be in shambles every night even if they are it goes back to like this honestly the same thing we said at this point last year like yeah you can say that there’s still like three and a halfish months left in the season but really when you take the trade deadline into consideration it’s like a month and a half and don’t you don’t even need to trade Prospect there’s guys on your major league roster that are expendable too you got so many guys playing positions that they’re not used to playing I mean you got five outfielders you know maybe a move one maybe a move talk there’s guys that you can trade and move as far as to make the team a little bit more as far as question about Craig councel this could all this makes me want to say is that like everything that everyone bitched and moaned about David Ross last year was so overblown however I know I sat here in September and wanted to blame someone and listen they were they were on Pace to win 90 games in like first week of September last year and then it didn’t happen all right and and then and then they won 83 games and hasn’t let us hear the end of it since unfortunately that’s probably the worst part of the entire if they win 90 this season well you also predicted it but the the point the point I’m getting at here is that yes I do think managers have some sort of effect on H on ball clubs winning and losing in some aspect however at the end of the day it comes down to who’s on your roster how the team is built and can this manager manage a bullpen can he put together good lineups and can he get the guys up to play every day I feel like the team comes to play every day I don’t I I don’t find myself sitting here complaining about the lineup all the time and he was given the bullpen he was given like I I would say the same thing about David Ross the only thing that I have against David Ross is that you he you know just did the same thing over and over in September last year but at the same time I could sit here and blame for that because what what did Jed do for him he didn’t he wasn’t aggressive enough at the trade deadline last year when they should have been to add another reliever like all three of us sat here and said that they should have done and they didn’t you added a freaking reliever from Kansas City who was raw and didn’t have like any experience at all and then of course Michael Fulmer gets hurt and of course Alay gets hurt in September and it and it costs you right Mark ladder missed a week in September and he threw the most Innings of his career his splitter was gone and his arm was just I’m surprised it didn’t fall off like it that to me a lot of that comes down to front office not doing enough to help the manager out so I’m sitting here and I’m thinking about Craig Council now in the same situation and in some ways like like I said it yesterday I feel pretty fortunate to be three games under 500 or I guess yesterday it was two games under 500 now it’s three in some ways I still feel pretty fortunate to be only three games under 500 in the rest of the national League just being absolute ass you know like I’m not making excuses for Craig Council but can we just like shut up about managers and if they if they Define wins or not man like that’s how i’ that’s how I’ve always Fel and I’m not even talking to you Luke I’m talking about just people who are all who who who are at some point are going to do this with Craig Council too if this team doesn’t make the playoffs you know how many people are going to yell and scream about that the truth is that right now everybody in the organization needs to look at themselves in the mirror and say am I doing my job because I think Jed could take some of the blame I think council could probably take a little bit of the blame I think players should take almost all the blame some people could say Jed and maybe some people want to say Tom rickets too for the not wanting this team to go over the luxury tax right now but also I also look at this team right now and say well there’s no sense in going a little bit over right now there isn’t because where’s it going I don’t know where it’s going I I know where we’re going we’re going to a break here and we’re going to hear about Sunnyside and established that’s not the mayor it’s just a Mayor Johnson what would you like to say however that would be electric uh yes Jed signed shoda in the end but according to ESPN 1000 shoda had to show interest in them first and his agents had to reach out several times sure yeah he’s still a member of the team and they signed here they scouted him for a few years so it’s not like and he he signed and he loves Chicago vul $2 I feel the Cubs very rarely hit in hit mistake pitches I mean that’s kind of what we were talking about on the couch and how they were like one of the worst teams against fast balls this year yeah yeah if I did the search right on on baseball Savant they uh numbers against fast balls down the middle don’t are not great compared to the rest of the league not good enough I know a few and there’s a few really good fastball hitters on the market right now supposedly the thing is is the team has good fastball hitters historic like historically Dansby Swanson has been a great fastball hitter his entire career Ian hap is another one of those like it it just goes back to what we said about how the team just has to play better like the guys that are paid the most have to play to their potential uh and what they’re expected to $5 from Ben Warren it’s brutal to see the Rays pathetic fan base get a win while those who are Cub lifers watch this BS end quote the rays are not the rays are in the same position the Cubs are right now I what what are you talking about the fans or whatever but they the rays are a scrappy baseball team and they’ve had a lot more success than the Cubs have over the last decade and I don’t know I well at least over the last five years because if you talk about decade the Cubs did win a World Series that true in 2016 the Rays did lose a World Series yeah true people forget that 2016 yeah there was a lot saying there wasn’t a lot of people there tonight I I I see what people mean the Rays you know not a lot of I think and this goes back to my complaints and frustration with front office is that like the Cubs are top 10 in payroll man they’re top 10 in payroll and and and they’re and they’re giving us this now you can go look at the top 10 teams in payroll and like the Astros are on there but you know what the Astros have been one of the best teams in baseball over the last seven to eight years they’re having a down year but like but I’ll take their last 10 years right you know like yeah how many straight ALCS is for the Astros four or five in a row yeah but I’m just again I’m just saying that that there are other teams too but a large majority of those teams in the top 10 are playoff teams and have had success in recent years and are having success this year but for some reason the Cubs who are like eighth or ninth in payroll in baseball are three games under 500 and just have all kinds of issues it feels like so that brings me you know we talk about Jed making these great deals and stuff but like how are we top 10 in payroll and not putting out a winning product it should I be more mad at the Players than I should at Jed about that Shane newbanks uh friend of the show on there had a had a couple of good I think posts here in the chat first one was doesn’t matter how much you spend if you don’t spend it right sure one earlier was he that he’s concerned about he said concerned about Jed now making moves that will trade wrong prospects because he thinks Jed’s trying to save his job is that something that concerns you as a super fan moving forward that Jed will be like I’m on the hot seat I do have to do something and Al Contra might be good but he’s got to go I don’t think so just because he has shown no history of like doing that I also think he’s safe yeah I do too as much as I don’t want I’m not saying he should be safe I’m just saying I think he’s safe I would say I’m not concerned about that because you’d have to look years in the future to say oh man he really lost that trade if if he traded a prospect and that Prospect ended up turning into an All-Star you still have to look years in the future to see that trade so like right now you’re talking about trading unknowns for potential improvements in in a year when everyone’s screaming for him to trade for improvements on on the roster like no that like that’s what you should do and obviously you want to be correct when you do that but you can’t you just can’t predict that kind of stuff like look at look at when they gave up Chris Bryant right like Canario and Caleb Killian were two were the two guys and like Killian was uh became like the best pitching Prospect in the Cubs organization and he just hasn’t done anything at the major league level right so like I just like prospects can be super hyped in the minor leagues or or look like they’re Bound for big things in the major leagues but they might end up doing nothing or or being role play fans get hyped up about those types of things because they see other organizations just it’s like rinse and repeat man right on it new star new star new star why is this I think that’s the biggest if you had to ask the biggest question right now on Cubs fans Minds over the last it’s probably why is this rebuild taking so long because it should doesn’t that kind of sum up the frustration it’s not this season it’s not last season it’s not the season it’s all of it put together when it was kind of this isn’t a rebuild we’re just retooling a little bit why is it taking this long with no real end in sight still I don’t right now I don’t feel like they’re closer than they were last year no I think might be closer but I don’t feel like this team is closer I think for that the when you’re looking at the the prospect angle it’s like when they hit the reset button in 21 and traded those guys like most of the guys they got were young like they were years away you knew that they wanted to stagger him this time yeah and and so to two and a half years going on three years later like it would make sense that like not every Prospect has gotten to the major leagues that they they gotten those trades or the guys they’ve drafted since then with the higher draft picks like that that would make sense based on that but as far as the major league team goes like yeah they they obviously they’re they’re in a better spot than they were in 2022 and we’re sitting here two years ago this time you guys were getting ice cream during during brutal losses like those were the days they’re obviously in a better they’re obviously in a better spot two years later at the major league Rost at the major league level but you I would agree like why are they not better why do they not seem to be in a better spot than they were last year right like why why does it seem like they’re still and I know the same SP record wise they are but they’re pretty much still spinning and that’s what I’m saying it’s like it’s like record-wise whatever but at least at this time they were starting to win some games maybe a few a few or a couple weeks away from really taking off but like they eventually showed that’s what I said earlier they eventually showed you the signs that they got out of it and they did this team right now is not showing the signs of getting out of it so you’re again you’re to your point is like at the major league level why isn’t this team right now look to be in a better spot than they did a year ago I think because they’re experimenting with too many guys at too many different spots I mean we we got I know Cory and Brendan have talked about this at nausey you guys have to they’re literally trying out three different positions at the major league level right now one guy who’s never played third base in his life is playing Third Base majority your third base Michael Bush is a rookie at first that’s appears to be working pretty well then miguela Maya is the other one you’re giving the majority you’re trying to develop three key positions at the major league level one guy who’s never played the position before I mean Mor Morel played third base lot thir Bas in the you mean you mean at the major league level sorry yes professionally like like he was not may had a few games he was not come in and be your third Bas like that was not his that was not going to be his role and it was pretty evident it’s at least it’s at least three because even if you count first base or Center as covered by Bellinger the other one then is the flip because PCA would still be an experiment in center field because he’s young and those guys are supposed to supplement a roster with major league ready players right now you’re relying on all of them to be Major League ready and that’s just not going to happen when when Matt Shaw inevitably comes up because that’s what it sounds like like maybe later on in August he might catch fire for a couple weeks but he’s a 22-year-old kid he’s not going to backpack you to the postseason and win you playoff games right away like takes a long time look at look at every other team in baseball with their top prospects they go up and down I mean it takes a while to become Major League ready the reason that I feel like and Luke you can answer this because we both sat here and just said that we think Jet’s job is safe the reason that I feel like Jed’s job is safe is because I have a feeling that the front office spoke to ownership or you know I guess ownership and the on the fact of their plan coming into this year of it somewhat being a year they’re trying to win but also more so and more importantly a developmental year because if it wasn’t a developmental year they wouldn’t have had these all these experiments and the thing is the only reason that I bought into the fact that they could still be good this year is because they had a team that was was projected for 90 wins entering September last year and injuries and the lack of offense hurt them and I just was optimistic that bush would be a really nice piece at first base which he has been when you also expected the top prospects to come up in supplement versus like Trey manini and Eric hosman a couple like you entered this season with a better roster than last year undoubtedly undoubtedly but you still just don’t have a a star player you haven’t developed a star player like I think they they are trying to develop Morell into a star player who I think can be you know but like things just like it it’s not like things just show up one day and and things are like that you know and then also in I’m not this isn’t an excuse but injuries have really hurt this team too like the offense was playing well then SE and belly get hurt and then the offense is was bad and the offense has been inconsistent ever since they got back you know like it’s it’s one of those it’s one of those things like in baseball and this isn’t just the Cubs but a lot of the best a lot of the good teams they they’re good because they’re getting like everyone’s playing well at the same time not necessarily position players all hitting at the same time but like you’re getting a good chunk of your lineup hitting well and you’re and most of your rotation is showing up and giving you good good Innings and you have more than just one or two guys in the bullpen that you feel really good about I I I feel good about wesneski in there so I’ll say three and even though nerys gave up the home run and they lost the game because of him I still feel pretty good about him because he had been better of late and I’m more mad about the offense not scoring runs tonight so the thing is is what I’m getting at is that they just they’re not getting like the guys aren’t all like the the amount of people that they need to have some sort of consistency they’re not getting it all at the same time and I feel like we did see a lot of that last year or else they wouldn’t have been 10 games under 500 to only get to 10 games over 500 only to Then Fall Apart in September you know I don’t remember over 500 I think it was I don’t remember who put out the list I don’t remember if it was Fox I don’t it might have been MLB network but somebody ranked like the top 100 players in baseball right going into the season and I think we kind of one of the off season podcast looked through it and said well they don’t have the Cubs don’t have a superstar um I don’t know where that list would be at now but I’m curious at the end of the season who the highest ranked Cub would be on that position player yeah because that’s really what we’re talking about it’s the it’s developing the superstars at a position player Justin steel has looked like a one or a two at the very worst right Sha has looked like a one or two at the very worst this season sh look like a guy that could start the All-Star Game correct so like you you have some pitches that you can look at and say they they might have enough pitching like to do some things now they might not have enough Bullpen but bullpens are pretty volatile on Mo most teams position players it’s about having the studs around the diamond or in the Outfield that you can count on every day when they come up the other team’s afraid who is that guy who is that guy in the Cubs who would be the highest ranked person if they don’t do anything the rest of the season Bellinger is the highest highest guy in that list right just because he has the most skins on the wall with an MVP from and he had a good season last year but he’s underperforming this year so far so Bellinger would be the highest rated guy but where would he be where do you think he might be I’m just I’m not even trying to list off other players it isn’t top 10 it’s not even top 10 in the National League no I I if you’re I think I think Bellinger is far and away their best position player and best hitter best situational hitter um yeah but if you’re ranking him I don’t know it’s hard to give a rough guess out don’t get me wrong like I I get that there are different ways to skin a cat like the socks have Luis Robert who is the best player in Chicago when he’s healthy but he’s the only player they have now I would rather have some pretty good players than just one great player who’s hurt all the time obviously the records show that but eventually you’ve got to have the Luis Robert hurt or not you have to have that type of player on your team Cubs won the World Series cuz they had Chris Bryant was an MVP and Anthony Rizzo was a top too he was an MVP guy and you were surrounded by other guys that were also very good players the potentially great players that season right yeah right now I don’t know who I don’t know who you’re you’re hanging your head on Morel still making that progress and I’m all for it because I’ve seen him start to make progress but I don’t know if I can count on him to become Luise Robert in the next three years and his progress shouldn’t it should shouldn’t impede on your wanting wanting to go get a good player it should be a bonus right but Morell is under contract for the next four or five years making dirt cheap money for compared to Major League Sluggers like that that should be again he should be a supplement to the roster but that’s not the way this team operates I would look at it more as like the fact that he cost so little should allow you to spend more money that’s what I was that’s what I said yeah that should make you want to go out and pay and I was reading Jim Cook in the chat said Copic Copic the socks also have Copic and Andrew Von if the Cubs me my brain jumbled up a little bit pass on both those guys that I mean to play Devil’s Advocate it’s not like there was a ton of guys on the free agent Market they could have gotten fixed this team offensively that’s why I’ve been pounding I’ve just been complaining constantly lately about not being more aggressive on the trade market but you know we’re here and I’m trying to just like stop doing that but it goes It goes back to what I said when I asked the question like despite all these great moves jeted Hoyer and Carter Hawkins have completed together does any of it matter if their if the results aren’t showing and the answer like we all sat here and said is no so like they it just like they they make the move that makes them look good but at the same time like if are we trying to win games or are you trying to win trades if if you’re trying to win trades then you better start making more trades to make the team better because you’ve won some trades but the results aren’t showing man and I don’t know how like how they’re going to fix the issues that we keep talking about I don’t know how many more games I’m going to have to watch you know scoring two three runs and they blow it because the offense leaves nine on base and goes one for seven with runners in scoring position you know like I and I know the answer to that is a lot because I’m G to have to come back here tomorrow and watch them do this again you could watch the socks I mean honestly I would I would I I don’t want to watch the Cubs tomorrow I really don’t I I would for my own mental health IAD I would gladly watch the white sock over the Cubs tomorrow man for my own mental health I like need a I need a week off from watching the cups I’ll watch the I can put the Socks game on and just have it as background noise and not give a [ __ ] what’s going on you might as well watch one of the bachelor shows that’s my numbing maybe I just need a break from baseball yeah I don’t know when Jersey Shore family vacation comes back but it’s probably soon obviously I don’t want to watch the white socks over the Cubs I’m just like this team is exhausting dude I it’s exhausting like there it it is insanity the same thing more often than not is happening every single night offense doesn’t get enough guys uh driven in which puts more pressure on the bullpen that obviously has its issues and Alay be giving you absolutely nothing this year and the team not doing anything about it leading us to rely on a 35-year-old setup man to be the closer and you know like how can I sit here and be confident that things are going to change when there were a ton of injuries yeah I had some optimism but like team’s getting healthy man it’s been healthy over like especially on offense the offense has been health you know they just they need they need to score more runs to me like that’s number one priority is they need to score more runs number two priority is to not get thrown out on the bases number three priority play better defense if there’s any positive for me tonight is that I did feel like they did those two things good tonight I know uh the Amaya thing like I I tend to agree with you on that like that was just a shitty situation yeah but I don’t like I don’t think that they they had anything happened on the bases or you know there wasn’t a bad defensive play that that cost them the game so like at least they gave us that like I’m that this is where I’m at like I’m I’m like I’m I’m I’m reaching for straws or something on something positive you know like yeah that that’s all I have somebody in the chat says Cody needs a spa day you know what that might be a good that might be good content we could all just we could all just go to a spa one day get you know yeah they got one right up have the things between the toes the isn’t the Russian bath house right over here there’s one of those you ever seen air oh it’s like it’s a that’s out of my price range it’s Chicago Avenue and we drove by on the way to the the Cubs thing right it’s it’s the crazy pools that they took a old building yeah I’m sure Jake could be up for floating that just to cool us off for a day are going to London we’ll go out to Mario all we’re asking for is a day a day at air for mental mental health we’ll go out to Mario mental health day at air Mario trosi cuz it’s close to your closer to your house than or or just give us a budget for some ice cream uh anyways we’re back here probably for therapy again tomorrow for a full hour afterwards um been an hour oh my God I know somebody in the chat said let’s look forward to the next off season we got to save that for tomorrow no I’m not talking about the offseason until The Season’s also uh we had like over 300 people people watching for a majority of that show thy was crowded tonight we only have 73 likes so please hit that like button 300 and we got 72 wether it got to like 360 I think I saw one point it was it was close to 400 we were pushing it was like 380 370 yeah the mob was growing seven super chats tonight thank you to you guys it’s great you know what help today play some EDM play some EDM on the yeah I’m going to play some sad [Music] also unrelated uh Cardinal fans gave uh Paul SK a standing ovation when he came out of the game tonight I don’t care what anyone says their fan base still sucks so that’s how I’m ending the show and they lost did they lose they lost no one finds a silver lining like I find one hopefully Milwaukee loses too all right let’s get out of here so we can do this again tomorrow thanks for checking out the chgo Cubs podcast uh Cubs lose 5 to2 after having a two- nothing lead four runs the ninth that’s that’s all you need to know good night and fly the [Music] W like the May

  1. I said it all along if the Cubs dont add in May they were going to sell in July. Everyone was like we can wait til trade deadline to get arms but by that time they might be done and they definitely do look done.

  2. I wasn’t sure if I was in the minority due to lack of knowledge, but other than his “no trade” clause in his contract (I think 😅) I haven’t been able to gather why we have Amaya as a catcher? I 💯 agree with the opinion that he’s a triple AAA catcher. That’s been very obvious for the whole season from what I can tell. It’s just bizarre that he and Gomes are what we have. Contreras was my favorite and just depressed me so greatly we couldn’t just pay the man and love him. I feel like Chicago just doesn’t take care of people or let them go properly. Bears have done the same at times. I don’t like the Sox but I feel significantly more empathetic to them right now than us… sigh

  3. It seems like you guys would get more comments, especially on a day like this, if you engaged with them more. I get that live chat is posted on the screen, so good on you for that. But I do think engagement metrics are driven by video interactivity.

I get a lot of response from the other Cubs podcasts.. and sure, I would imagine the majority of your time is taken up by Diehards, but it would make sense to reach out to new people more that can’t or don’t make the live broadcasts.

Also, Cody, man. Really bad ad read. Don’t forget that your job is probably more fun than 90% of the audience. You get to come to work and play table tennis, it doesn’t really matter how bad the Cubs are.

  4. Why is it that when a player works to improve himself and is playing good baseball is not even mentioned?
