we have breaking news out of the basketball World Dan Hurley has turned down the Lakers sixe 70 million offer I think the fact that it was the Lakers and it was that historic franchise that’s what he was drawn to he’s going to remain a husky and uh huge wow the timing wasn’t right for him it might be at some point in the future Dan Hurley has made up his mind this has nothing to do with the Lakers it has all to do with Yukon and the hurly family they went all in on Hurley it’s the NBA you you have time to hire a coach they dropped the ball on this one because there’s no way in hell I’m even letting Dan Hurley get back on the flight I would have held them hostage you’re not leaving let’s figure this out the shocking many coach Dan Hurley chose listen to this you Hollywood boys uh chose stores Connecticut over Los Angeles he turned down a 6year $70 million offer from the Lakers sources told our Adrien wowski WJ was all over this and will return to chase a third straight national title at Yukon the two-time champ releasing this statement I’m humbled by this entire experience at the end of the day I’m extremely proud of the championship culture we have built at Connecticut we met as a team before today’s workout our Focus right now is getting better this summer and connecting as a team as we continue to pursue championships it was a great day for Yukon fans I am thrilled Danny Hurley’s coming back I know it was a very tough decision going for that three repeat so I want to ask you this essay do you agree with Hurley turning down the Lakers job offer because that’s a big deal well I don’t want to say I don’t agree with him because it’s his life and ultimately it’s what makes you happy as my boy Jeff in California always says happiness is good for the poor you know what I mean I mean when you’re happy it’s good for the pors okay so you don’t want to be stressed we and we get his hilarious but he really really means it but but but but so Danny Danny hurle whatever is best for him and his family is the right decision I would tell you I was surprised um close to shock that he turned down the Lakers because here’s my thinking he’s already a champion the reigning two time defending national champion he’s widely considered the best coach in college basketball and one of the things that I brought up religiously fellas is what has happened to college basketball the networks the itself the NCAA they’re going to have to do something about this most folks don’t give a damn about college basketball right now until March Madness March Madness they own it they own the month March Madness no question about it get your brackets ready everybody’s in but prior to that with the exception of a few games North Carolina Duke and stuff like that um you you’re not really thinking that much about college basketball compared to what you once did now a lot of things have to do with that okay and we understand folks in the G League we understand folks in Europe you know you see guys coming out of high school even though you got to be out for year and then after that you get the one and DS we see all of this and so because of that all of that has contributed to it but nevertheless the demise has arrived college basketball when Duke when shashy turned down the Lakers job I believe it was 2004 Wendy we weren’t really shocked he’s Mike shashki it’s Duke it’s Duke North Carolina it’s the ACC it’s College basketball at its hey it’s doing all of those things this was different the climate of college basketball is different so to have the Lakers job available to you to be the highend competitor that Danny Hurley is I was close to shocked that he turned it down and we’ll get into what this means for the Lakers a bit later but I don’t want to sit up there and say it’s the wrong decision because it’s about him his wife his family and all of that stuff and nobody could say it was the wrong decision when it comes to you deciding what makes you happy guys I was listening to coach Greenberg said the timing wasn’t right it wasn’t the timing it was the money you going to make him the six High pay Stephen A you and I have both been free agents and here’s the thing if you have a job for another job to get you to leave you’re going to have to make me an offer I can’t refuse this was a very refusal offer considering what they offered him you’re going to make him the sixth highest paid he has a job how do I make him says you know what how do I get his wife to say babe we can’t turn this down this is life altering money I tell you what how about 6 years 80 million how about 6 years 90 million I know Steve Curry is making 17 and a half but the Warriors didn’t want him to leave so it was easy for him to stay if you want someone to leave the local you want them to leave the current job that they’re in you’ve got to make them an offer they can’t refuse because you’re going to have to convince his wife they’re Jersey they live in stores Connecticut Jersey is a lot different than LA California stores Connecticut is absolutely 1,000 1 million per different than La so in order to get Dan Hurley to leave stores Connecticut leave the east coast in which he has grown up in how do I make him how do I make him says he and his wife sit down at a table and say babe I can’t turn this down this is too good to be true you’re talking about 15 16 million a year you going to make the man 115 million 11.5 million offer you offer Coach K 8 million in24 so 20 years later you’ve only gone up $3 million Stephen A oh no but all of this could have been solved if you gave tyoo the job but you see what they did here now they did offer Dan Dan Hurley six years they only offered tyoo four years with three years guarantee at that little bit of money and then we want to choose your staff you see Lakers you keep doing thing bass ass backward go ahead give somebody the job let them choose their staff and pay them Shannon let me frame this for you so he’s making $5 million now he’s G it’s you know pretty good money he what he got a year ago when he won the championship they’ve got an offer for $8 million on the table $8 million a year he obviously didn’t sign that offer and took the interview with the Lakers so he wasn’t happy with that um so everybody sees that number uh you know six years 70 million I’m like wow that’s a huge number but you’re right Shannon it’s kind of a lowball and here’s why you got the governor of Connecticut Ned Lamont coming out there publicly saying we’re g to make sure Dan Hurley is the highest paid coach in college basketball now I know the governor doesn’t necessarily decide the the salaries at the University but when the governor says it on the record it makes a difference and the highest paid coach in college basketball right now is Bill selfa Kansas he makes about $105 million a year so you got the governor on the record saying we’re going to take him past that so Dan Hurley knows at some point he’s got a salary coming from Connecticut an offer coming from Connecticut that’s above the 8 million on the table now and I’m not going to get I don’t know the semantics of the potential negotiations but it’s not going to be that different from the offer in LA and so yeah I do think that it was kind of a lowball from the Lakers and so if money isn’t a factor then it makes then you can go on to other things but I think money was a factor here he was basically potentially on the same footing the Lakers can’t be on the same footing financially as the University of Connecticut and this offer was and then you get into how difficult the Lakers position is right now it’s not a commentary on the Lakers organization it’s a commentary on how tough the West is it’s going to be really really hard to be successful over the next couple of years with the Lakers whereas in Connecticut he can become he can join John Wooden as as guys to win three Pats honestly at the end of the day these offers weren’t really close Connecticut was better and so I’m not surprised this went down the way it did yeah Stephen before you jump back in I just want to say really quickly to us someone who’s lived in both stores Connecticut and Los Angeles there’s also the taxes factor I mean that’s a huge difference you can have a palace in Connecticut you know what it is in La it’s a different deal so if we’re talking just dollars specifically well well I I want to express my disappointment in myself for to for really not focusing on what Shannon and and and Wendy rightfully focused on because and you just brought it up Molly first of all I I I I don’t know I had brain lock Wendy Shannon I’m thinking about papovich and the deal that because of what y’all brought up the deal he just got I’m thinking about Steve Kerr and the money he just got I’m thinking about Eric spoler and the money he just got um you see these names and this stuff pop up and you see cats getting 15 16 17 million per year the lake is come at the lake is come at 11 so that’s problematic the taxes that Molly brought up because not you know listen I listen I I love Gavin Newsome in those suits he looks presidential and then you get to the taxes in California you’re like hell the hell to the no I’m not interested in all of those damn taxes so that’s problematic but then you brought up this is a big thing Shannon I’m a piggy back off of most you brought up tyou when it came to tyou first of all understand something even though Frank vogle did deliver a championship even though dingham did take them to the Conference Finals the reality is is that tyo is universally recognized as one of the great coaches in the game today and you know that he was taken care of by balma I think it was at about 14 million if I remember correctly okay I actually thought he deserved more I actually thought he deserved more but 14 million is 14 million in the end you’re looking at it and you’re saying Lakers what are you doing because since this was so public and the number was lower and it’s Los Angeles and it’s the lake franchise I think the Lakers look worse now than what they looked before they let it get out that he was their primary candidate for the job because now you’re looking at it based on what you two you two brought up now that you’re looking at it you’re saying what the hell is going on because you don’t have the money why would you want this guy so bad but knowing what the other folks got why would you come to him with that offer in such a public on such a public platform and and and and be like in sixth place now you start raising your eyebrow to the Lakers and looking at them and saying what the hell is really really going on with their finances it’s the problem yep well well that’s what happens when you have when you have Frank Bogel on the payroll and you got Darin ham salary on the play payroll think about this LeBron James he had Luke Walton for a year he had Frank Boger for a couple of years he had Darin for a couple years this is about to be his fourth coach since he’s been in La Monty Williams I think Stephen didn’t mty Williams get like 12 13 million a year from Detroit yes yes 13 yes 13 oh he got 13 and y’all thought that man was going to leave an ideal situation at Yukon where he’s the reigning two-time National champ he’s mythical he now me think about this he’s mythical he’s doing something that very few coaches have ever done and that’s whenn backto back championships and y’all thought that man was going to leave for that price oh no no can you under and and and that’s the thing no no it doesn’t work like that Lakers y’all going to have to get your act together because this is embarrassing because you’re going to and y’all thought y’all was saying something we’re going to make him the sixth highest paid coach in the NBA really y’all want me to leave my job that I love and come to be the six highest paid n y’all going to have to Nestle me in there between first and second I think another factor in all of this and obviously you’re all businessmen and I know at the end of the day if someone makes you an offer you can’t refuse you’re going to do it right I’m an East Coast girl an offer I could refuse and I had to move to LA I would go even though my whole family is in New York and Connecticut and this is where I want to be especially as my parents get older but I think it’s also that’s a factor for him as well right his whole family is from the East Coast both his wife got a beautiful family and as your parents get older and that kind of thing it also takes a lot in terms of that term’s offer to now go to the West Coast cuz it’s a complete deal let me say this let me say this Molly um again what Shannon and Wendy brought up and please put Shannon and windy up so I can see him what when when what they said was very very important because it’s about the money please don’t get me wrong again I ask y’all to put Wendy and Shannon up I want to see them when I say this it’s about the money sure but it’s also about the level of respect you show him if you know what the others have gotten paid if you know how they’ve been compensated on their level of Excellence what possible excuse do you have if you are the Lakers in the second largest market in the country and the most sto arguably the most story franchise in basketball anals between them and the Boston Celtics how do what does it say to him that you would make that offer offer if you’re look if you’re from his Vantage Point there’s a lot that comes with it there’s oh they must be from some Financial constraints or they must not have the respect for me that I think they should have or they should have done X Y and Z these are the kind of things these are the way negotiations go about people set the market and when you look at the market that’s being set it’s whatever offer you get yeah it’s indicative and you know and people come and they think you don’t know the details you’re in Danny Hurley’s POS position you know the details you know just it ain’t just about the dollars whole for a long time right whole been in this right all all of that comes with it they know every detail and for people to think that he doesn’t know it’s a mistake Lakers made a big mistake here Wy I want to come back to you but real quick I’m also curious do you think it might have played a factor with Yukon you real you realistically can go for the three Pat right they have that type of roster where they really could win it again and as for the Lakers are you really winning anything in the next year or two well I think what we’re talking a lot about the money because the problem was the money wasn’t a thing which you wanted it was to be a thing you wanted as Stephen A Shannon said you wanted it to be a thing and so basically this didn’t come down to money what we’ve talked a lot about it but the fact is it didn’t come down to money and that’s a problem the Lakers needed it to come down to money so I think if you’re the Lakers you’ve actually been here before in 2019 they wanted both both tyo and Monty Williams they both said no tyou actually just didn’t take any head coaching job just stayed on the Clippers bench um because he was disappointed with the Lakers offer Monty chose the Suns over the Lakers because the Suns made a better contract offer and that was when they had Robert Sarver notorious for being cheap actually outbid the Lakers for him and they hired their third choice who was Frank vogle um they had missed the playoffs six years in a row and they fixed their roster more than important than anything they fixed their roster they went out and traded for Anthony Davis and they won the championship with Frank vogle so what I would say here is the Lakers number one priority in the in the short term obviously is getting a head coach but their number one priority for next season is fixing their roster and doing things on their roster this is it’s a bit of an embarrassing day for the Lakers but it’s only an embarrassing day it doesn’t have to be an embarrassing month L much less an embarrassing year they have to it depends has to hit the ball out of the park right P has hit the ball out of the park starting at the draft in for agenc trason y we don’t have a ton of time but I want to come back to you on this and I want Shannon and Stephen have a chance to respond who do you think the Lakers should Target now I don’t know because the guy that they’ve got as their sort of backup candidate James bgo the guy they spent the most time with is sitting in Cleveland right now and he may have an offer from the Cavs before the end of the week so you know and obviously you you JJ but they haven’t done a formal second full interview with him yet and it’s two weeks to the draft from tomorrow so I don’t know where they go one thing I will say I would be interested and I don’t have an answer here I’d be interested to know if any other college coach has heard that offer and said you know what 70 million s 70 million Lakers sounds okay to me I wonder if their phone is ringing at all in the last 24 hours [Music]

  1. Let’s be real no one give af about Dan Hurley going to lakers, we Don’t need him

  2. There is not a single human alive who is more overrated at their job than Ty Lue. At least in the mind of people like Smith

  3. The problem is the lakers don’t have a future proof roster . Yes they have lebron and AD. But they don’t have a foundation for the future , and the coaching revolving door there doesn’t help. Hurley has stability at UConn .

  4. Maybe he just didn’t want it, lakers aren’t what they once were. I’m sure being in LA isn’t everyone’s dream like SAS lol

  5. Impressive from Stephen A acknowledging he made a weak take and commending his colleagues for a much stronger take.

  6. Why was it only Hurley that is lowballed this has been the situation in LA since Jerry Buss years he's who set the standard That's why Riley and Phil left after multiple championships this is what they are

  7. No surprise to me. Hurley will have a lot more control at UConn, and he's won titles there. Being an NBA coach is much more of a time commitment, and you're frequently on the hot seat. The only reason to leave would be money, and he's already paid handsomely at UConn.

  8. The Lakers job is a death sentence for any aspiring NBA coach. I don’t blame him. LeBron is the problem.

If you can’t live your best life making $5M a year, you got problems. Hurley isn’t hurting for money. It’s about more than salary.

  9. How is this guy always so out of tune with what everyone else in his profession knows? At this point I have to believe he is just a cartoon character. A wealthy one…but still.

  10. 1 and done ruined college basketball. No time to build a storyline or rivalries among recruiting classes and specific trams.

  11. Someone needs to call out Rob Pelinka. He’s robbing the last run of Lebron and ruining the Lakers. He’s an issue

  12. I knew he wasn't going to take the job, i wouldn't have taken it either. Why give up a secure job, move your family, get put under a spotlight, and walk into the mess the Lakers franchise is. And money doesn't mean the same thing to everyone, so dangling money doesn't always work for humble people.

  13. why is that surprising, the lakers is not a stable job for a HC. He needs a young team without all the pressures for a first gig job in the NBA. If things don't go well with the lakers he could be out of a job in 2 years if Lebron comes back and isn't happy.

  14. Lakers- have no culture/ no development/ trying to Microwave a team they Break up a squad after winning /. 12 mil per is too cheap for ShtLoad

  15. Yeah, the Lakers have now fumbled 2 amazing coaches. Ty Lue and Dan Hurley. I'm pissed and scared for the future of the franchise. You DO NOT lowball elite coaches and pick their staff. Lakers ownership and front office need to be investigated. Just PAY THE MAN.

  16. You think when Lebron retires they’ll go back to actually talking about championship games and whats happening in playoffs instead of mid teams like Lakers and Warriors Suns?Wasted an entire year not hyping up Thunder or T wolves or Nuggets the now and future of NBA Next year we talkin about Lebron and Lakers instead of SGA Wolves taking next step. Magic moving up young and tough Defense Knicks looking consistent at every position Pacers offense Celtics potentially goin back to back championships.. lots to talk about but we get stuck with same Lakers crap. The NBA has a new era of great teams and players shift that attention to them. Under 30 guys have taken over post Lebron-Warriors era now introduce them properly to your viewers. Tatum Brown Luka Brunson SGA Edwards—Towns Zion Ja Morant potential comeback story list goes on. Still stuck on a mid team and 40 year old leader

  17. Lies that man didn’t want the headache because soon they lose he’s getting blamed for everything smart decision by the coach
