so a couple weeks ago I made a video on the channel where I graded the biggest NBA trades over the last couple of years dating back to 2019 and for today’s video I wanted to grade the biggest NBA trades that I didn’t talk about in that video from 2010 so yeah pretty much deals that went on in the 2010s but excluding the ones that happened in 2019 and we can really use the power of hindsight in today’s video to grade those trades cuz most of those have pretty much been completed those draft picks have been made and we know the final outcomes of those deals cuz a lot of deals that happened over the last couple of years are still TBD due to guys still being on their teams that they were traded for they could win a championship and obviously some of those draft picks haven’t been made yet if you guys do enjoy these videos I’d appreciate you if you drop a thumbs up on the video make sure you’re subscribed if you’re not already let’s get into it so the first trade I want to talk about is one that happened in the summer of 2017 it was kind of a shocker when Kyrie Irving wanted out of Cleveland and he got his wish and got sent to Boston in exchange for Jay Crowder Isaiah Thomas a zich a 20 2018 first round pick that ended up being Colin seon and a 2020 second rounder that ended up being Skyler Mae that end going to Atlanta and at this point in the NBA I remember it pretty well we all thought the Boston Celtics were in the best suited position they had a couple young guys that they got in a trade we’re going to talk about later in this video they just signed Gordon Hayward in the 2017 free agency class they had Al Horford as well and we all thought yeah this was a legit finals Contender with Kyrie Irving who wanted to have his quote unquote own team in Boston he got his wish got sent there he spent two seasons in Boston pretty good statistical seasons in year one though he could not play in the playoffs in 2018 when they ended up making it to the Conference Finals which was kind of crazy and then when Kyrie was healthy the following year they ended up losing in round number two to the Milwaukee Bucks he was an All-Star in both of those Seasons but they never hit the ceiling with him since he was a solid player for them I’m just going to give it a b because they definitely sold high at Isaiah Thomas’ point of his career which was a great deal in hindsight and then basically at the 2018 trade deadline L GM traded Isaiah Thomas to the LA Lakers for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr they had to give up a first round pick in that deal and then they also sent Jay Crowder in a three- team deal but they got Colin seon in this trade so I’m going to give this a B plus for them they were able to leverage Colin seon in a Donovan Mitchell trade a couple years later so I’m going to give them slightly of a better grade than the Boston Celtics in this one but honestly this trade really didn’t work out in complete fashion for both sides uh little did the Thunder know in 2012 that the s cap was going to rise and they were going to be able to afford to resign James Harden well they didn’t do that and they sent him to the Houston Rockets with Cole aldri dequon cook and Mazar Hayward in exchange for Jeremy Lamb Kevin Martin a 2013 first round pick which ended up being Steven Adams a 2013 second which ended up being Alex abrus and a 2014 first-rounder which ended up being Mitch McGary I mean for the Houston Rockets it’s an A+ you got a generational shooting guard town and a generational score for not the price of what one would go for James Harden would go on average 30 points eight assists and six rebounds a night in his N9 years in Houston that included three scoring titles an MVP and a couple all unb first team appearances yeah this is one of the greatest trades in Houston Rockets history it’s an eight plus as for the OKC Thunder you’re getting a c in this steel it could be a lot worse but Kevin Martin left you after a year giving you good six-man production Off the Bench Jeremy LM never reached his fullest potential and only played three years in OKC Mitch McGary their 2014 first rounder in their steel was a bust but the lone bright spot which is holding this up to give it a c is going to be Steven Adams who spent seven years in OKC averaging around 10 points 7 and a half rebounds and was a crucial big men to their competitive and successful OKC Thunder teams in the mid-2010s but yeah this trade was not good for the OKC Thunder you can even make it a worse letter grade the 2011 Carmelo Anthony Trad to the New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony was going to be a free agent in the summer of 2011 but the Knicks decided they wanted to give up an absolute haul for him at the trade deadline it was part of a three team trade with the Minnesota Tim wolves getting involved they got Eddie Curry Anthony Randol and cash but pretty much the New York Knicks required Carmello Anthony Ronaldo balkman Chanty Bops Anthony Carter Sheldon Williams a 2016 first round pick ended up being yako prto but you’re like Matt the Knicks didn’t get yaka purle yeah they traded that first round pick for Andrea barani we’re not talking about that disaster of a deal Nicks also got Cory Brewer in that trade from the Minesota timber wolves the Denver Nuggets received a haul for someone that was about to be a free agent Wilson Chandler Raymond Felton denil galinari Timothy mozgov a couple second rounders a 2014 first round pick which ended up being Dario Sarge that they used in a trade on draft night cuz they used that pick in another trade that we’re going to get to in a little bit and oh yeah a 2016 first round pick which ended up being Jamal Murray one of the more important players on their 2023 championship team yeah this is an A+ for the Denver Nuggets you got such a haul for someone that was going to be a free agent he could have left you in free agency Raymond Felton really wasn’t much for Denver but timy Ma by year three in Denver was actually one of the better big men to come off the bench and he got a massive payday eventually later in his career by the Lakers Wilson Chandler was pretty good and he spent seven years in Denver averaging 13 points 5 and a half rebounds and shot 44% from the field denil genari was such a good get for the Denver Nuggets he spent six years in Denver averaging 16 points five rebounds and shot 37% from three but yeah also getting that 2016 first round pick that ended up being Jamal Murray still on the Denver Nuggets today and yeah that makes this trade even better for the nuggets as for the Knicks I’m going to give you guys a C+ for this deal you could have signed carel Anthony in free agency being from Brooklyn there was a good chance you were going to be able to sign him pair them up with Amari STM and Danelle ginari Wilson Shamar and all these picks and they chose not to do that they chose to trade for him at the trade deadline I mean Melo was great in New York he spent seven years there averaging 25 points seven rebounds shot 44% from the field 37% from three he won a scoring title in 2013 he was the most relevant Nick since the early 2000s and there was a dark dark time between the Allen Houston withr fre well Knicks basically to the Jaylen Brunson Knicks But Carmel Anthony in those three years with the Knicks and their three playoff appearances were the vone bright spot so I’m going to give that a C+ it’s just for this trade with hindsight wasn’t great for the Nick with the NBA Playoffs being in full swing the best way to play fantasy sports is with Underdog fantasy and in my opinion it’s the easiest way to play fantasy sports and enjoy playoff basketball in 2024 when I’m going to these playoff games and stressing about the New York Knicks we’re watching these amazing Western Conference games I’m using Underdog fantasy throughout it I love using Underdog fantasy and playing with friends as well throughout these games and it really makes it an enjoyable time to watch the playoffs Underdog’s pick them game is my favorite way to play fantasy sports right now you go to the pick them tab on the underdog fantasy website or app and you pick either a player will have a higher or lower stat total in that game that they are playing in for a chance to win big and you can pick between two to five players in a pick them entry and you can win up to 20 times your money if you do get all your picks right and what I love about Underdog is they’re constantly doing promos the other night they did one where Caitlin Clark scores over half a point and they do these throughout every single sport either it’s golf promos and baseball going to be the WNBA all season long and obviously the NBA as well and they have a great promotional offer for you guys if you use my link in the description below or use code Ross Sr you can get a 50% deposit match up to $250 when you use my code soss in the description you can use that link obviously coach SOS went sign up and please remember again to play responsibly can’t stress that enough and thank you again to Underdog for sponsoring today’s video all right so we’re going to talk about Chris Paul getting traded from the New Orleans Hornets to the LA Clippers not going to talk about his trade from the Clippers to the Rockets because that was more of a sign in trade so in December of 2011 the Hornets traded Chris Paul with cash and a second rounder to the clippers for alfar ginu Eric Gordon Chris Cayman in a 2012 first round pick which ended up being Austin Rivers for the Clippers this is an A+ you got a generational point guard the point guard Chris Paul for not as much as he should have went for Chris Paul spent 6 years with the Clippers averaging 19 points 10 assists multiple all NBA first teams multiple All Stars multiple all defensive first teams he’s one of the best players in Clippers franchise history I know they never made it to a Conference Finals that’s not because of Chris Paul he was an elite player for them he was the top 10 player in the league it’s an A+ as for the Hornets I’m giving you guys a D in this return for Chris Paul you’re really only bright spot in this deal was Eric Gordon who averaged 15 points across five seasons for the Hornets but then left for the Clippers in free agency in the summer of 2016 Alfa Rino only played three years for the Hornets Chris Cayman only played one year for New Orleans and Austin Rivers played two and a half years after getting drifted in the lottery to go play for his dad in Los Angeles the New Jersey Nets were starting a reband to become the Brooklyn Nets and they wanted to make a splash at the 2011 trade deadline they sent out recent first round pick top five pick Derek favers Devin Harris and a 2011 first round pick which ended up being Andis caner and a 2013 first round pick gorgi Jang to the Utah Jazz in exchange for at the time one of the better point guards in the league Darren Williams and Williams’s 5 and a half years in Brooklyn he averaged 18 points eight assists shot 42% from the field and 35% from three he actually had a really good 4 and A2 years there before he just fell off in 2015 he shot 38% from the field 36% from three averaged 15 points and 7 and2 assists before going to the Dallas Mavericks in 2016 for the Nets I’m going to give this a B minus in hindsight like losing the third overall pick in the 2011 trade for Darren Williams not a great deal but they ended up drifting Andis caner so that hurts a little bit less I mean Derrick favers was a really good player throughout the course of his career but Darren williams’ Peak was a breath of fresh air in New Jersey at the time it could have went way worse so yeah not the worst grade in the world for the Nets as for Utah I’m going to give this a B+ Darren Williams wasn’t going to be fre each until the 2012 off season so I think they actually did well trading him away getting Derek favers who was a nice rotational big man for you for pretty much 10 seasons this probably would have been an A plus if they drifted anybody else with the third overall pick in 2011 instead of NIS caner like there were guys like Ka Leonard Klay Thompson kemell Walker that they passed up on Deon Harris wasn’t much in Utah he only spent two years there and then they traded gorgi Jang along with shabaz Muhammad on draft KN in 2013 for Trey Burke really nothing there so yeah still a solid return for Utah I mean they got the third overall pick and Derrick favers they just didn’t really capitalize on that third overall pick so many people were asking me in that last video I did where is the Kawhi Leonard Raptors trade Matt and I didn’t do any trades prior to 2019 so here we are talking about it in the summer of 2018 the San Antonio Spurs traded away kawhai Leonard Danny Green and cash to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Demar de Rosen yaka purle a 2019 first round pick which ended up being Kellin Johnson for the Toronto Raptors this is an easy grade it’s an A+ they won a championship with kawhai Leonard now if they gave up all this for Kawhi Leonard to leave in free agency in 2019 and which he did but they didn’t win a title this could have been like a c but no they won a championship it’s why you make the trades everybody could left the team they could be a losing team for the next 5 years and this still would be an A+ as for San Antonio you’re getting a B minus in the steal Kawhi Leonard was looked at to being a top five guy in the NBA at this time and we saw what like Anthony Davis got a year later yeah they did not get equal return for Kawhi Leonard due to what he had going on with his injuries and how he just won it out completely in San Antonio and they lost all the leverage but Demar rosan gave San Antonio some solid years they were able to sign and trade him to Chicago they still get a top 10 pick protected down the line for him yaka perto they were able to flip back to Toronto to get the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft so that looks great for them and getting Kellin Johnson was solid but yeah you probably could have got a little bit more for Kawaii Leonard if we just saw what Anthony Davis got the Pelicans or Paul George got the Thunder a year later in the summer of 2014 Cleveland Minnesota and Philadelphia were involved in a three- team trade we’re going to talk about this just for Cleveland and Minnesota this sent Kevin Love one of the best power forwards in the NBA over over to Cleveland for the number one overall pick Andrew Wiggins recent number one overall pick Anthony Bennett and Minnesota also got Thad Young from Philadelphia in this deal as well as for Cleveland if I’m going here what I’ve done with Toronto in the past video I got to give them an A+ they won a championship in 2016 who knows if they win a championship with Kevin Love or not so yeah you’re getting an A+ for me even if you give up Andrew Wiggins and honestly looking back on it it was well worth it cuz Wiggins did not reach the potential and hype that he had going into the 2014 draft as for Minnesota you’re going to get a bat in this steal I mean getting Andrew Wiggins in exchange for love who was going to be free agent in 2015 was great Wiggins really didn’t amount to too much into Minnesota they actually had to pay him a ton of money after that 2017 season yeah they were able to flip him to Golden State but they got DLo and then they were able to trade DLo yeah that trickled down a little bit but I don’t think they got equal return using hindsight for Kevin Love I mean Anthony Bennett yeah was like an F of a player and I don’t really think they got anything else in this deal and they didn’t even get any future first round picks in this deal that ended up going to Philadelphia from Cleveland all right so now let’s talk about the massive four team trade that went down in the summer of 2012 uh the Lakers got Dwight Howard the 76ers got Andrew bham and Jason Richardson the Orlando Magic got aona Flo Al Harrington Mo harus Nicole vuvi and three protected first round picks and the Denver Nuggets got Andre Iguodala all right so for the LA Lakers they’re going to get a D in the steel the only reason why it’s not an F is because Andrew bham did not work out whatsoever in Philadelphia if Andrew bham went on to be a consistent good big man and they traded him away for d Howard that they didn’t even do anything in the playoffs with yeah this could have been a worse grade but the Lakers had a plethora of injuries that year and they didn’t really give up too much in hindsight for Dwight Howard who had one year left on his deal but still not a good deal whatsoever looking back on it for Philadelphia trading away Andre ugala Nicole vuvi Mo Aras and a first round pick that ended up going back to them that was Landry Shaman yeah they’re also going to get a D in this deal a horrible trade for Philadelphia that pretty much jump started the trust the process rebuild I know Iguodala only had one year left on his deal but not a good deal whatsoever cuz Andrew bham did not play a single game for Philadelphia yeah you can’t really predict the injuries he was going to have but here with hindsight this is terrible for Denver giving up Aon a Al Harrington and a first round pick in exchange for Andre ugala it’s going to get a C+ I mean giving up all that for a rental is a little bit but Iguodala was a good player for them if they would have resigned him this would have gone probably in the be’s maybe an A minus but since he left them after one good year for Golden State I can’t make it any higher than that and for the Orlando Magic you’re getting an a Dwight Howard had one year left on his deal it seems like with hindsight they sold at his highest point you got Nico vuich in this deal who you eventually flipped for fron Vagner Jed Howard and W Carter Jr years later but Nicole vuich also gave them some pretty good years as well they ended up getting the alred Peyton pick in this deal and they were actually able to get two good years out of Arna and then trade him back to Denver and they got Evan fornier in that deal as well a really good four team trade from Orlando and lastly we have to talk about the trade that happened in the the summer of 2013 involving the Brooklyn New Jersey Nets and the Boston Celtics that sent Paul Pierce Kevin Garnett Jason Terry DJ white a 2017 first round pick which ended up being Kyle kosma a 2017 second round pick ended up being actually Sasha venkov to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Keith Bogan MarShon Brooks Chris humph Chris Joseph Gerald Wallace a 2014 first- round pick ended up being James Young a 2016 first- round pick ended up being Jaylen Brown a 2017 first- round pick ended up being fult but then traded to Philadelphia for Jason Tatum and a 2018 first round pick which ended up being Colin ston that was included in the Kyrie Irving trade we talked about in the beginning of the video so yeah this is pretty easy for me it’s an A+ for the Boston Celtics Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum two amazing forwards that you got with the third overall picks in 2016 and 2017 but like yeah in 2017 that pick actually ended up being number one overall and they knew to trade down to get Jason Tatum they were also able to Leverage The Colin SE pick like I said for Kyrie Irving it’s an A+ for the Boston Celtics this is the easiest grade to make in this whole video as these two forwards are about to both be on supermax contracts competing for NBA finals for years to come and could win it this year as well as for Brooklyn it’s an F yeah you traded away your whole future for aging veterans that never really did anything for you in the playoffs whatsoever they made it to three straight playoff series but they lost in round one two of those they made it to the second round but then lost in the Eastern Conference semi-finals in 2014 they just had a veteran team in you had Brook Lopez Darren Williams Joe Johnson Paul Pierce Kevin Garnett I mean they had a new owner new ownership syndrome it was just never going to work out and then they ended up going through some dark dark years but shout out to Shan marks who did one of the greatest rebuilds in NBA history one of the darkest Futures turned into Kevin Durant Kyrie Irving and James harded at one point so yeah that is going to be for me I hope you guys did enjoy this video let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these letter grades down below and it was really cool to see how these trades aged over time so yeah thank you all for watching I love you guys and I’ll catch you on the next one peace [Music]

  1. Trader Danny is a legend. Miss him in Boston even though we have the EOTY. The future is bright in Utah simply because they have Ainge.

  2. As a self proclaimed NBA historian, it’s interesting to see how teams valued, or devalued, draft picks in the 2010’s. Teams who traded handfuls of picks can rarely say they won their end of the trade, whether for vets or active players.

  3. I gotta think maybe the Lakers came correct with their offer for Davis after lowballing the Spurs caused them to miss out on Leonard. The Lakers offer for Leonard was like Ball, Kuzma, Hart, and Luol Deng's contract, pretty easy to see why the Spurs turned that down. Clippers offer was Tobias Harris and a draft pick (not the one they used to get SGA). And then no one else was offering anything decent since Leonard said he would walk next summer if he wasn't traded to an LA team. Personally I wanted the Spurs to just sit him for the season since he already sat out the previous season, but probably good that didn't happen since that trade is why the Spurs have Keldon Johnson, the #8 pick this year from Toronto (from trading Jakob Poeltl back to them), and the 2015 Chicago pick (top 10 protected, from trading them DeRozan).

  4. Can you do the Spurs trade where they traded away Dejounte Murray for 4 FRPs? and got Wemby. While Atlanta is now trying to trade DJ. Everybody thought Atlanta finessed the Spurs but it was the other way around.

  5. Go all in and do greatest trades of all time.

The Ainge Nets trade is up there, as is the Auerbach (if I'm not mistaken) trade for Bird.

Crazy how the Celtics lost 15 years of contention because they had two legendary talents that passed in their early 20s. If that hadn't happened, it's possible that the only period in time where they weren't a great team would be the literal first years they came into existence in the 40s. Unreal.

  6. The worst trades are the ones for players who are about to become free agents, especially when you give up young players or first round picks

  7. honestly i would say say the kawhi trade for the spurs is at the very least a B+. kawhi was more than ready to just walk out of the franchise without a trade, but the spurs managed to at least get something in return, while there were other packages that in hindsight seem more intriguing like the rumored package of ingram, lonzo, and hart. the spurs were still looking to compete and decided to take the package of derozan and poeltl and run with them and lamarcus to push for the playoffs. they would realize a bit late that they’d need to pull the plug and reset but they ended up drafting keldon with the pick they got in the trade, flipped derozan (who also could’ve walked out but he respected pop and the franchise so much he allowed them to trade him) for that FRP and some assets who they flipped again for some SRPs currently.

not to mention they managed to flip poeltl for the #8 pick this year and 2 SRPs

and if the keldon trade rumors are true, the trade tree for the spurs just keeps growing.

  8. Nets made two different franchise-destroying trades in ten years 🤦🏽 worst franchise in basketball

  9. Another thing about the Boston Brooklyn 2013 trade.. when the celtics traded down for Tatum in 2017, they also acquired a 2019 1st to draft Romeo Langford. He was eventually sent to san antonio in a package for Derek White. So technically they got Brown, Tatum AND White all from that trade

  10. the knicks didnt “decide” to make that trade, they were forced to. Carmelo stated that if the knicks did not trade for him , that during free agency he would not sign with the knicks, but with the nets. so they were forced to get him and give up a ton of assets.
