some of the things that occurred both in the ring and outside of it with the judging there was some disputed scores uh questionable scores and I mean actually some craziness went on everywhere we had guys getting poked in the eyes nothing being done told to fight what was your take on what was going on well I want to start first with the uh the main event and the main event came off obviously with Dustin and anlam you had Eric Cologne who scored it 39 to 37 you know going into the into the fifth that means three rounds to one three rounds to one and then you also had uh Sal uh damato he had it 3937 as well uh for ISL so the two of them both Eric Cologne and Sal deato both had it uh 3937 for Islam then you have Chris Lee that’s how I had it okay okay that’s kind of that’s pretty much how I had it to I told you I I texted you I said you know but that’s how I had it you had Chris Lee who I feel like Chris Lee had a very bad night John was it Chris Lee that had a bad night or somebody El maybe it was somebody else okay because I thought we were talking about you said this okay anyways look Chris Lee had it 3838 going into the fifth yeah I would like to know I and I don’t know I don’t know what round he gave Dustin but I gave Dustin the fourth round I had I had Islam winning the first three okay he gave Dustin the second he gave Dustin the fourth okay I see the fourth I get the fourth I didn’t get the second the fourth was Dustin drown he landed the cleaner shots he you know the cut on the elbow by the elbow you know was a good thing the body shots that he land against the fence body body shots were beautiful and they were powerful and so you got to look and say he had a lot of good good activity good Damage Done and Islam was just a little bit off of it so that round should have gone to Dustin the second round it’s that’s a tough one because there was some things that happened if you’re going to go back and look at it that uh you know there was takedowns you know you can sit there and say well what do he do with him every time that he got a takedown he was going after this is one one of the things that I really admire about Islam makev is he doesn’t just take people down and control and sit he tries to go after submissions he tries to do something that’s going to finish the fight that’s what you’re looking for out of a fighter and so I looked at that second round Dustin had his moments where he landed some good stuff not enough you know a better round for Dustin obviously and this sometimes happens is the first round was absolutely Islams he took him down you know had his back did all kinds of work there curay you know all these things that happened well then you go you look he say well Dustin did a whole lot better in the second round and he did but he didn’t do good enough to win well Eric Cologne had the second round to Dustin as well wow he and he didn’t give uh Dustin the fourth round yeah really yeah yeah yeah and again I see I I hate I hate going against guys but and I’ve I’ve told you this and I’ve I’ve had you sit there and look sometimes it depends on where you’re sitting as far far as what you actually see as the judge and people don’t you know they think it’s a lot of [ __ ] it’s not it is absolutely true that what you see in one seat is going to be different than what somebody else sees in another seat it’s a different angle you have the fighters you know changing angles to where you don’t see something while somebody else does the referee gets in the way right when the shot lands you can’t tell if it actually landed or not so there is a lot of things that happen you’ll get a difference there but then that’s the one you know i’ I’ve I truly believe and I’ve told people the best thing you can do because one of the things that you know you have as far as sitting their cage side is you have your ears because you can hear how strong the the the shot lands and it’s something you know people in the crowd they don’t know and for the most part people you know watching on TV they don’t get it either because you just don’t hear it you you kind of did when you you had the Apex shows or the had him you know in the bubble at Mohan son stuff but you know now the UFC is really doing a good job of Hey listen to this listen to how hard this landed and they’re giving you that audio that’s what the referee hears throughout the fight you know you hear how you hear how hard something hits you know and that gives you information well it’s the same thing with the judge but I honestly believe that the judges need a bigger monitor a 32 inch monitor in front of them that has the camera angles so they can see at all times if the fight’s right in front of them I’m all four them watching the fight live right in front of them but when it starts to get to one side of that cage or the other as far as corners and God damn it stay on that thing because it’s G to give you information that you’re not gonna get by trying to watch it live with by turning your head so you know it’s one of those things that happens but you know I had Islam winning at the point in the fifth round had him up three three rounds to one but I’m going to be honest Dustin was doing good in the fifth round yeah he was looking he was looking good he was actually at at a certain point he was winning that round you know and then Islam got the what I’m gonna call now the the Russian ankle tie and hey you know worked got him to where he wanted Darth choke on beautiful you know where that you know where that came from right that came from Sancho where they would catch the push kicks and they would just drop it down between their legs and they would step to the side and sit you to your butt Kung used to do it a lot and I learned it from a guy named Thomas Deon and man that guy he cuz I would never throw a pushi against him he’d always hit that on me every single time that or he’d Treet top me so he would just he’ lock over the top of the foot and on the bottom and then he would just go into an X right away and put my foot between his his hands and he’d push it up to the sky and almost every single time man he’d take me down crazy I had a talking a conversation with Scott Koker today about Thomas Dian he’s like man because Koker came in to the gym to watch him Spar hitting all this stuff on all of us world class Fighters that are in you know in the big shows he’s going oh I got my guy I this guy and then he got out there and he just couldn’t get it done under the bright lights man he was like man he’s so good but no couldn’t but look yeah that little that little ankle thing man I don’t know if that’s where it came from but that’s where I’ve seen it and I’ve seen a lot of fighters in the San show world that that’s where they got it from they they were using it over there um you know a little controversy I guess in that but look this is the judging criteria in terms of it comes from where you’re sitting that’s one it does you know and John you brought up a good point hearing the shots I had never ever heard the shots until I was about to announce my retirement and I was walking past the cage in San Jose when patrii Pitbull and Benson Henderson were fighting and I just heard the shots Landing I was like damn I’m it’s time for me to retire really because I never was really that close to the cage unless I was in it I mean I randomly sometimes would go to the fights and sit cage side you know what it was like you know for the strike force fights and for the um Bellator fights I was working unless I was calling the fights that’s a different feeling you’re watching the fights but man I was walking past it and I wasn’t watching the fight and I just heard qu quack quack crazy yep and you go oh [ __ ] that that’s hard you know and it’s it is I had I had someone on you know Twitter you asked me a question about khabib because there there’s a a clip of him against Michael Johnson without any of the commentary and it’s just you hear khabib talking and how much you he used to talk all the time you know and he says you know you know was this you know did did this throw you off was this the first time that you ever heard anyone saying these things it’s like are you kidding man Fighters talk all the time and some of it you know Paul buentello was fighting one time and he was fighting a guy named Gilbert Gilbert aldana and Gilbert was a guy coming out of uh uh I want to say cage rage in Arizona rage in the cage in Arizona I’m sorry rage in the cage in Arizona and Gilbert was be you know crushing everybody and all of a sudden boom you know they need a fight a heavyweight fighter he’s a he’s a compact fighter but you know Paul’s opponent pulls out they put Gilbert aldana in there and you know he wasn’t in the best shape for that fight you know and Paul could definitely stand up and you know throw his hands well he had a good jab and Paul is uh he’s fighting him and he’s just you know he’s putting it on him and then they’re on the ground and Gilbert’s strong and he’s holding on to him and Paul’s basically saying he brother man you gon have to give it up man you know I don’t want to hit you anymore you and gilber Gilbert Al Don you know basically looks straight in the eyes he says he says Paul you’re gonna have to [ __ ] kill me to get me to stop he goes you better keep [ __ ] in you know it’s kind of [ __ ] that happens all the time man you know all the time you know you hear people saying stuff you know there’s conversations that go back and forth there’s man does this man this sucks doesn’t it yeah this [ __ ] sucks right now happens but you hear things as the referee you hear things that you know no one will ever hear but boy I’ll tell you as a judge and a referee your ears are a huge part of making good decisions did you do the uh Kosik Paul Dy fight no no no the that was done by Dan [ __ ] that was a lot of trash talk yeah that’s a lot of Trash Talk Josh was like get up [ __ ] I thought you were going to [ __ ] me up I thought you get up [ __ ] get he was going at him just and then obviously D was like let me up man let me up well I thought you were going to be a man then it was just this obviously a lot more words were involved but yeah that fight and then you know who was who you said and I’ve had several people tell me this as well the best trash talker in the cage Frank Shamrock oh yeah Frank Shamrock just was absolutely he was brutal you know him and Nick Diaz Nick would would talk but you know Nicks was you know come on [ __ ] yeah come on [ __ ] you know come on [ __ ] he called everyone [ __ ] you know it was you know you know and he would he would hit him he goes oh that [ __ ] hurt didn’t it you know oh that [ __ ] hurt you know watch watch this one [ __ ] and he would throw his shots right he goes oh you felt that one he would just talk and when they were G to fight each other and I went to into their locker rooms you know talked to each one individually and I told him hey let me make this as clear as I can you know what there is a rule about well you know what you say I said I don’t care what you say to him as long as he you and I are the only ones that are hearing okay that’s what if that’s what’s occurring you’re not going to you I’m not going to say anything and nothing gonna happen if it gets out of hand and everyone else around that cage starts hearing it then I’m going to have to do something about it so don’t make that happen you know and both of them you know they’re Frank ended up shutting up pretty quick yeah there there was there was only like I fought a kid named Cajun Johnson but before he was in the UFC and before I was in the UFC we fought up in Idaho yeah K kjun was from uh BC yeah from St St George St Prince George or something like that is where he was from yeah I fought him real athletic kid you know yeah good fighter yeah um super long lanky yeah stopped him in the second when we fought but like it was he was talking to me the whole time let me up like wait you’re afraid to stand with me I was like no I’m just not stupid like know I’m whooping your ass right here I don’t need to go whooping your ass why am I gonna do yeah so we just stayed there and yeah we finished the fight there but anyways uh but then the only guy that ever really threw me off was KJ Nunes because he was so relaxed out there it’s those are the guys like Frank Frank’s very relaxed doesn’t matter what you do to him he rolls like that whole flow like water [ __ ] he’ll roll with everything and just like ah whatever when he fought Tito Ortiz cut on his forehead Tito was sticking his fingers in the cut he’s talking oh that’s nasty Tito what are you doing man that’s like unsportsman that’s dirty like what are you doing that just bugs you because you know they’re not affected by it and you’re expecting them to be bothered by oh you’re putting oh he’s getting me like involv involving the ref oh he’s sticking his fingers no Frank just didn’t care you know and it just it had that Vibe of man I’m even sticking my fingers in his cut he doesn’t care I’ve hit him with everything he doesn’t care and he’s just talking and relax I’ve also learned that Fighters that talk I’m getting tired yeah because it makes you more tired because they you know that they’re not getting tired because they’re so relaxed um most of my best fights not just me and some of the other Fighters I’ve know that when they’re filling it out there they’re so relaxed but because they can talk during their fight or they can communicate with their Corners everything doesn’t have to be even operating on all cylinders they just feel comfortable out there because they know um they feel safe everything feels good you know when I was fighting KJ it didn’t feel good it felt like man if he got up she’s I got to deal with this guy getting back down he was a lot harder to get down than I thought it was like a mental thing with me uh it was it was like dealing with Frank all over again this guy was just talk he was he wasn’t being rude like oh Josh that was a good one oh Josh like you know oh that was nasty oh you almost got me there you know again I’m like dude this guy is so relaxed it’s driving me crazy and that was that was normally me in the gym doing that to you know other guys like oh oh not yet no you can’t do this no no you know and it’s so weird to have to deal with someone like that that’s the that’s the feeling there uh John there was some ey pokes there was some uh headbutts yeah you know um yep who was the ref there Gast G you talked about this a little bit on the on the weekend show on the recap but I mean where do you with the headbutt I thought it should have been an automatic point deduction should have been is that where you feel you feel the same way absolutely because you can take a look and go no matter what it wasn’t you can watch the action and go you did that on purpose that action you because she turned her head you know when you’re gonna headbutt someone I want to hit them somewhere with the side of my head I don’t want it to be towards the middle of my head and she does exactly that she boom and she and it’s like you you need to take and stop those things right away and say ah stop get up let me make this as clear as I can for you if you’re wanting to get out of this fight with a loss it’s coming okay I’m telling you right now because I’m about ready to disqualify you so you better start figuring out that you want and and I I would sit there you know you want to be a fighter in this organization You Want To Be A Champion someday start acting like it because you’re acting like an idiot you know and you gotta put people in that so they’re almost I’m sorry right and it’s like oh cuz you did it on purpose you know and it’s really what it comes down to and it’s like absolutely there should have been a point deduction because you had the one girl you know she she got you know lumped with a a forehead it hurts you know it’s bone on bone it didn’t break her open so that was good but she’s still affected by it so every time she gets hit there it’s already been hit by something hard now it’s it’s having more of an effect than it would have in the past so she’s at a disadvantage and you got to do something to try to at least even that out but the one thing that you know G I’m gonna say this we all have bad nights you know and everyone as a fighter you can have a bad night as a referee as a judge and one of the things that I want to say the New Jersey State athletic commission I thought you know I don’t know if they had Jason Herzog go up and talk to Gasper Oliver during that fight with the ey Poes which was Randy Brown against dos Santos but Jason did exact and I’ve done it many times during the middle of the fight you get up and you come over here you realize that you’re missing this well and you know what it’s it the reason why you’re doing it is not to chastise them it’s to say you realize you’re missing this this is what you need to do and this is how you need to do it got it have a go out there and handle it and it’s what you’re trying to get that person what happens is they become undecisive and as soon as you’re un decisive as a referee you’re useless you got to make decisions you got to make a lot of them and it was good that Jason went up there to try to reset him tell him hey you’re missing things you gotta you gotta catch this you made a fighter go back out with an eye poke that was illegal and you made him fight with that you know that injury like it didn’t happen you can’t do that you know you’re putting him at a disadvantage when when you find out that you’re working these the cars say working UFC you know 302 when you find out you’re working that card and you see the refs that are working them with you do you know the other refs like I know you do but I’m simply saying like do you do they show you who the other refs are that work in the show or you just show up and then you guys all see each other no you don’t you don’t uh sometimes they’ll send you an email that has everyone’s name on there that that is going to be working and sometimes it’s just one asking you hey or they’ll call you and say hey do you know do you have uh the ability to work this show or we’re putting it together and stuff and you tell yes or no and that’s what you know you know all of a sudden the UFC is you know contacting you with a flight or something like that is there a ranking system like say Jason Herzog works it and then you go hey like no there is not there’s no ranking system there’s no there is no ranking system as far as officials because all the officials don’t all work every state you know you got to figure some officials work in one state they don’t work in another state now some of them work in almost every state but you’ve got to get that license in the state you got got to be licensed by the athletic commission so you know the ranking system as far as you know there there’s a pecking order you can look and say you know as far as judging Sal demato is the guy that everyone’s gonna look to and say he judges more big-time fights more UFC fights than you mean not Crosby oh sorry that was inside joke I don’t even understand what you’re but he doesn’t understand judging either so we’re on the same page so but s yeah no no doubt does more Derek clear is a guy that came in after s uh Andy Foster is the one that brought Derek in because Derek was a you know guy that trained in Jiu-Jitsu with Andy Foster and you know became uh he wasn’t really working in Georgia and he started working in California because of Andy and you know he’s a great judge and so he’s he’s a guy that gets a lot of work but yeah you can’t sit there and have this oh there’s a there’s a a batting order and stuff and we’re going to switch it up what what’ll normally happen is you know you can look and say that one judge had a bad night and I his name is Dave trelli I love day trelli as a person he’s one of the nicest guys he is a true fighter he has fought he’s done kickboxing his whole life he then went to jiujitsu and became a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu so it’s not like he hasn’t been part of this the fighting world he had a bad night you know and and I can tell you you know he’s had you know fights that I have not agreed with with him on you know before but he had a bad night here at at UFC 302 and I think what the New Jersey State athletic commission is gonna do you got Larry Hazard is in charge of it Nick limbo is the legal guy who ends up kind of making he’s kind of run MMA for the state of New Jersey for a long time he’s gonna probably you know he’s gonna pull Dave in talk to him and say Hey you gotta explain to me what you got okay well I’m gonna instead of putting you on another C you know big card if one comes up I’m telling you I’m not going to for a while and I’m going to I’m going to have you know give you these smaller shows and let’s see that you’re doing those fights right and Dave’s gonna have to prove himself interesting because yeah if you’re going through Dave trelli basically what you’re talking about is the Strickland and Costa fight is that he gave the first four rounds to Paulo Costa Pao Costa look I I actually even I even uh Sal demato gave um paoc Casta the first round I had paoc Casta winning the first round that’s okay I can away with it you know and then you get into and they all gave paoc Costa the fifth round or sorry they all gave or sorry they all say they all gave uh sorry they all gave sh in the third round fifth round I mean but look I said there’s no way you can give PA the I had Shawn running away with it after that but like I I had Paul Costa win in the first round that’s it and it’s totally understandable that was all but look he had a bad night he you were talking about this was there another fight on here that he had that he did you didn’t like the cards yeah there was there was another fight that he had that just was not uh Michael Vic ATB us.com catch an incredible 125% sign up bonus on your first three deposits plus 10% gamblers Insurance bet us my online Sportsbook and casino was it the very first fight of the night someone was telling me it was the first fight of the night yeah Dave tra oh it was yeah it was it was uh Lima against Roso someone I I recall them talking he had he had uh Roso winning 2928 and there was no way repos look at you know and Body Language tells you everything after a fight you know when a fighter thinks that he won or a fighter go knows that I lost and raposo you know he had that body language it was clear and uh I mean I thought Lima won every round you know he just he controlled the fight he you know Raposa wanted to get him to the ground couldn’t get him to the ground you know ended up having you know a stand up battle and just took the harder shots and took some big Big Time shots big kicks you know and it was just you know bad fight for for try but that just that led into the next oh yeah one that you know ended up being a big one with Strickland you see it all the time right guys uh in tennis you see it in golf you know you you you start off strong or maybe you don’t start off strong at all it’s a Snowball Effect you know yeah if I’m hitting Gophers off the T box man it’s just runs the rest of the ruins the rest of the day H I used to I used to have squirrels running across on the from the Fairway get out of the way fuzz nuts man this going to get deadly save your lives coming he’s coming yeah you know and it’s like it’s like I said everybody we want Perfection I want I want the fighters to be perfect but they’re not gonna be and I want the referees and I want the judges to be per they’re not gonna be they’re human and and sometimes it is that seat that you’re sitting in but when it comes to as many rounds as that were off it was just a bad night for him just a bad night well happen I’m sure we’ll see him back you know I you have a lot of respect for him you speak highly of him and stuff I don’t recall um he’s a good person yeah I don’t recall exchanging with him too much um you you’ve been there with him he’s you know he’s been you know a ton of Bellator events that you’ve you know but you know normally those scores are coming out kind of right

  1. The crowd had way more of an effect also. The judges hearing that roar when Dustin lands a strike and Islam’s went largely ignored. Just a matter of fight location but that made a bigger difference than many realize.

  2. i thjnk thes eoundits or oen of hem is deusuinal distin only got elbo to fet cut on islam but they did jot see wht islam hit ..Like thomas did good anlaysiisa itbwas close bit never Dustin …stop this delusion Fustin i gave him the last round in begining 2 moutes thast all but he was submitted

  3. Why dont the judges sit in the back with a big ass monitor instead of watching it through the cage from 1 angle?

  4. We don’t want to hear they had a bad night, then you get fired, go have “a bad night” at a company losing a million dollars.

Only govt officials get these BS passes and we all know it.

If he judged one bad fight clearly, pull him for the night, if you don’t get that you don’t live in the real world where people aren’t babied on their jobs.

This is why govt should have nothing to do with it and in America was never designed to control everything. Communist commissions.

  5. What happens if a fighter calls for an ilegal shot (a kick to the groin for example), takes his time to recorver and the camera shows it was a legal shot to the body? shouldnt the fight be sanctioned a TKO?
in case the ref allows the fighter to go on with the action, can the fighter that threw the body shot ask the comission to change the result of the fight?
For example fighter A got kicked in the body, ask time to recover from the "ilegal shot". Fighter B ends up winning a UD, can fighter B ask to overturn the result to TKO?

  6. New trend we’re seeing is fighters getting rounds for “doing better”. Rounds aren’t being judged independently.

  7. There IS an answer to judging but it will eliminate the possibility of fixing / robbing fights. And thats to give the judges at least 10minutes to run back the tape and discuss any differences etc.
They are so quick to the decision that one wonders if they had it decided before the fight even started. Theres no ways 1 minute between rounds can be enough to consider all variables – has no one thought of this like ever? Dumb

  8. DAMAGE BASED SCORING! POSITIONAL ADVANTAGE MEANS NOTHING it’s amazing how people that have been watching the sport for decades still don’t understand that one judge will always be a dissenter even if it’s not what they actually think just like the supreme court, the costa and strickland fight was clearly a sd and the main even would clearly have been a sd had the fight went the distance

  9. A lot of bias in judging. Sean Strickland has had so many split decisions on his record. These judges don't appreciate all the negative stuff Sean says about them.

  10. Mma is like any other sport: referees and judges cheats. Why should we cover this truth which was proven again and again in every sport field. Why we presume that judges are angels. Who in the earth haven't preferences? No one specifically sport judges!!

  11. Josh is one of the very rare fighter I was seriously concerned about (for his health) while fighting tony

  12. i didnt have dustin winning any rounds , he had a few 15 second spurts while afterward islam punished him and in every round had chance to end the fight , dustin looked tired in the 5th and that ankle pick proved everything dustin wasnt getting up and knew it was over

  13. I went to a boxing in Fayetteville North Carolina. The main event was between Riddick Bowe and Razor Rudduck.Rudduck landed a shot early in the fight and it sounded like a baseball bat hitting a ball.LikeM80 firecracker..So Loud.Bowe ended up winning, but l will never forget that punch.

  14. I went back and watched the fight, and its pretty reasonable to give Dustin 2 and 4. John can say, "You dont know what you're looking at," but all three judge score cards reflect that clearly.

The thing that could give Islam is the second, without question, is the takedown at the end of the round. Takedowns with 10 seconds left and not much done with it leave me unmoved. I used to count them heavily, but if little is done with them, they dont factor much into the scoring to me.

What's also interesting is the significant strike count. I find that whatever calculates the numbers are often far away from an actual representation for the fight.

Also, the crowd was definitely pro Poirier, but watching the fight with the sound off gives a pretty good depiction of the fight.

  15. Problem with the sport isn’t just the judges but the athletic commissions and their inability or reluctance to promote the judges with great track records while almost every UFC event, we have some judge simply out to lunch on the scorecards. I know for a fact that the UFC and athletic commissions make recommendations to each other about who they like and who they don’t and if an official has a big screw up, you’ll be on the ‘don’t use them again’ request list of the UFC.

  16. Jon Tank Abbott has been calling you out and talking shit about you recently on every podcast he’s been on just wanna hear your response he said a lot

  17. Ufc should have 5 judges just incase one or w of them have a "bad night" that can end up ruins a fighters career…
Especially after that jones and Reyes fight
