How To Swing ON PLANE For STRAIGHTER Iron Shots!

In This video Me and My Golf give 11 handicap Todd a lesson helping him get his club more on plane to hit straighter iron shots. Todd did have a relatively good golf swing, we just had to iron out a few things in the backswing and not only did he start to compress his irons. He started to consistently hit it a lot straighter!

in today’s live lesson we’ve got Todd Todd is an 11 handicapper struggling with his irons we’ve watched him hit a few shots we’ve seen some really big divots Grand before contacts and unfortunately the unmentionable shank every now and then so the objective is we have to get rid of the shank and then we have to get some more compression now look if you’re serious about improving your game make sure you hit the Subscribe button so you don’t miss any of our videos okay Todd it’s time to sort you out we’ve got to get rid of the shanks and we’ve got to we’ve got to we’ve got to make these divots a little slimmer the club’s digging into the ground a bit here let’s take a look at the golf swing and show you guys what Todd’s doing so really solid setup great move away but what happens from the moveaway is that we tend to then really lift the arms Todd so the arms get quite vertical like this where if we draw a line from the the butt of the golf club it passes more through the toes now a great guide is we’d like to see it a little bit more in the heels but what happens from here because we’re a little too much vertical as you turn on the power and start the down swing the hands move a little forward the club gets above the swing plane and this is what causes that horrible shank cuz the club is moving too much this way away from the actual plane there but couple that this is what also causes a lot of the steepness that club crashing down into the ground from face on what we see face on reasonable but we’ve got a little bit of a sway on the way back we’ve got this move where the head and the upper body work a little too far back this way and when we do that then we know that this is where we can bring in the the ground before the golf ball the low points move this way the goal of the session for you is from face on we’d like to see you a little bit more centered when you turn from down the line we want to see that the arms are a little bit more around the body so it’s a very much more of a a rotation golf swing we need to give you as opposed to more of a sort of a a sway and upward move if we do that we’re going to see hopefully some cleaner strikes and completely get rid of the shank it’s already really nice golf swing I love it I I look at it and I go your golf swing’s too good to be in Shanks it’s far too good to be in Shanks okay let’s take your set up then first actually do a back swing for me then Todd just a normal back swing okay hold it there for me so breathe out look at his arms relaxed when he bre out good so from here I’m just going to do this okay so the the left arm now is more across and we’ve put a little bit more rotation in there so this is where I want your left arm from down the line now what we’ll notice is the lead arm is a little bit closer to the shoulder plane now normally that’s where we are we get a little too vertical now we want to be a little bit more around here so now what we’ve got is we’ve got more of a flatter arm position and from here now we don’t have to make too many compensations we just have to start the down swing and the club then will already start to be more close to that swing plane and that that’s what’s going to bring the sweet spot to the the golf ball let’s make a couple of swings then back and through for me now toan just feeling that for us can see how you sort of just letting the arms just sort of settle back down aren’t you there todia yeah I want to just clean I want to clean his strike up a little bit I want to shallow things things out and this is the first thing we’re going to do we always want to change the smallest thing that has the biggest impact and we said we could change the back swing slightly it might look better but it won’t change your your golf swing really but what we’re doing here will massively impact what’s going on with the golf ball and what’s going on with their interaction with the turf so I’m going to Tee It Up and I’m teeing it up relatively High the reason I’m teeing it up relatively high is because I want to encourage a more of a round motion I I almost want you to just clip these off the tea without really taking any Turf very nice it’s actually really good very nice what do you notice about the the the ground interaction here barely had any barely had any Don’t Hurt Anymore look at the smile on his face there take a look at the turf a little bit that’s that’s good remember we want to hit the turf yeah but look at the difference between this one shallow than much shallower can see the old habits coming in hold it there for me I’m just going to encourage something here cuz what we tend to see in your your move is more of this this move so what I want you to do as we as we go it’s going to be move the club with me so as we move there you go keep turning now there you go feel the difference there it’s going to be feel like it’s a much more of a big wind up for you around there so we get get that early rotation there you go perfect it’s good so now what we’re starting to see look this is what I prefer to see when the ball’s down there as well let me just quickly check something Club is a little bent I think let’s go night time that’s just yeah I’m take I’m I’m actually now just going to go straight off the ground because of how well you’ve done that straight away for us there Todd I want to see the instant change now how was that that was pretty better A lot better A little heavier I think you I think the arms are looking pretty good we’ still got a little bit of the sway a little this move on the swing so let me just do let’s do a couple of Swings with you where you just just to the side of the ball here if I was to just stay here okay now just do a couple of back swings for me rotate rotate rotate there you go so it’s making sure we we still rotate without the actual Sway and again so the first move for you is let’s turn turn turn turn turn turn turn good back and through now with no stopping good okay now the key thing I want you to still do is making sure you turn with this one get the arms working more around okay not bad so rotate rotate rotate good good good ni shot very good nice little drawer as well isn’t it yeah it’s good you can keep that little draw I’m sure you’d be happy think about this as well and this is is a good message for you guys at home is that if the body does a really good job so if we have a great pivot motion of the body it’s very hard it’s very rare that we see someone with a really nice pivot with the body and their arms are going up here we’ll always see that if their arms are going up here it’s probably because the body isn’t quite doing a good job the arms will generally follow what the body’s doing really and if we’re going more this way there’s nowhere for the arms to go does that make sense if we rotate with the body well look the arms are going to naturally want to follow them so they’re they’re closely linked freely okay that really really nice absolutely just on the money golf swing there that was quick question how many Shanks have you hit none none okay we hit quite a few in the warm-ups here yeah ah there’s the noise we’re after they’re beautiful I mean let’s just look at the carry on this one Todd brilliant shot 135 carry how do that feel that felt really good notice the interaction with the turf look at these yeah compared to oh compared to these yeah beautiful really good golf shot again nice draw I me that’s that could be the longest one I’m going to say that’s about 137 maybe 140 140 with an eight iron that’s longer than your seven irons earlier on when you started yeah so I’m just going to drop this here so again good rotation early it’s the one oh lovely strike so good such a good such a good look at the ground round the ground is now so so much better again 138 oh excellent really really good cons look at the consistency now not only in the strike but also the actual ball flight now one thing I’m just going to quickly do with you Todd as well is your old golf swing just show me your old takeaway what was the old takeaway actually no before today oh like when it was bad before it was going on the inside wasn’t it yeah yeah now there’s a danger now that by you focusing on what we’re focusing on it might go back inside so here’s here’s a good thing for you to do take your setup swing back to this sort of waist height position here hold it there good so we know when you look down there that it’s nicely in line with the you know this is a good checkpoint yeah we’re in line here now what I want you to do is go to the top of the golf swing perfect so what you’ve done there is you’ve gone right I’m making sure that I’m still on plane not going to whip it inside on the inside because happen on a couple got to think about what’s going to happen when you when we’re not here so it’s good for you to go okay keep the move away good now I just feel that the arms go more around and I rotate as opposed to just cont yeah so it’s a good good thing for you to check that it’s it’s weird isn’t it because if you think about this your back swing was pretty good here but then it went off here now on that shot there swing there it’s worse here but better here but which swing is better the second one exactly so it’s like even though it’s poor here the fact that you’re actually getting the arms more around enables the downswing to perform better we could have worked at making this part look better today but it’s almost irrelevant the performance wouldn’t be any better the key thing that actually moves the needle is where your arms and what your body’s doing so it changes the down swing absolutely beautiful good as is high little draw back the target got the before and after now so obviously before we saw that the arms would sort of rise up and we’ get the But of the club sort of the vertical line in through the toes that would lead to the over the top but now what we’ve got is not only have we got the body working much better we can now see that the arms are working a little bit more around the body as a result at the top of the golf swing that vertical line now is down through that heel line and what that does in the down swing we’ll see how that club now gets perfectly or very very close to plane actually a little under the plane which is what’s giving you that draw no more shin you just got to get those arms around and no more huge deep divot that is the key now if you enjoyed this video you’re absolutely going to love this video here 1. For irons, you want to just barely scrape the grass right? You're not trying to dig a hole? Any difference for that when the ball is above or below your feet?

  2. I'm always able to take something away from your videos for me….I think your instructions are really simple and so easy to follow,
Thanks guys and keep up the great work

  3. We as ams seem to focus a lot on the down swing. In reality if we focused more on the back swing it would help the down swing. As usual great vid guys!

  4. Thanks for watching as always guys. Hope you enjoyed the lesson with Todd. Let us know in the comments below what you need help with in your game right now?👇

  5. Haha something Andy said at the start there about upper body rotation flicked a switch in my head. I've always had these niggling thoughts in the back of my mind a lot my troubles come from a lack of upper body rotation. I'm not sure if it's a mobility/flexibility/strength problem or I just wasn't aware. I can turn it back but can't keep it at the target. Away to do some sitting torso rotations now.

  6. Love this guys lower body movement to initiate his downswing. I have very similar traits in the backswing, can’t wait to try this out.

  7. When I shoot a 75 on the back and a 68 on the front I know it’s time I prolly should learn what I’m doing or move up a few tee boxes

  8. Piers my mum has been on to me again – This is the second pair of trousers you've nicked off her and she's absolutely furious. She's off on a cruise next week with her friends from Bingo and they are her favourite summer pants. Can you sort it out please, thanks mate.

  9. Enjoy your content. Would suggest videos on crossing the line, adding loft at impact and reverse pivots something I see at the range all the time

  10. I was wondering if the backswing should be more like Todds "bad' one. Good to know now. Great work Todd!! The lads work wonders again.

  11. This is so frekin sage….. I mean what a ridiculously impressive lesson. The exact issue I have alwas dealt with and I assume many other 10ish hdcp have……so hard to perfect. Thank you for some more game

  12. As a taller player I struggle with staying in plane and the occasional shank. I also take too much turf because I am coming in a lot steeper. Any thoughts on what to do as a taller player?
