[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to season 2 of trap talk brought to you by Craig off welcome to another episode of trap talk I’m your host Zach Nini I’m here with my co-host Richard Marshall Jr uh we are live at the silver dollar in the the Bingo room on the on the golf course side and we have our good friend Herbert Lewis here uh we all just got done shooting uh the class singles and uh what was it I guess the prelim handicap was what they called it but it’s it’s Wednesday’s handicap the first handicap of the the HOA so we’re a little tired we’re a little little sweaty not exactly the cleanest but we know you guys want to get episodes in so so here we are with Herby now listen we did walk Zach walked over three miles I walked about two and a half miles so with Justin which that’s a little he did a little clip on that so we’re trying to we’re trying to get healthier you’re going to see skinnier trap talk hosts and co-hosts over over time hopefully we’re working at it we’ve got our great friend Herbert Lewis uh from Kentucky thank you for joining the show well thanks for having me um Ricky could you give us a little introduction for the shoters that don’t know Herby Herby shot uh 25 plus years ago before Co correct well yeah it well before Co well before shot yeah and then he he went away from shooting Co came back he started shooting again we’ll get to that story in in in the podcast a little bit but Herby has come out of like a house of fire um made the all- America team y um shot with Zach and I and Bullard and Justin at the Heartland gr at Stockdale beat our ass beat our ass yeah yeah and uh in the handicap and the allaround uh every day I mean we just had such a great Squad but he’s also won a couple other satellite Grands um the Dixie grand um what do you about six now I guess it is yeah something like that you know satellite grants which is tough to to do uh and accomplish because you’ve only been back now for about three years roughly going on the fourth you know or third or fourth year so but but Herby multiple 200s all over the country um he finally got his hund and doubles you know which is good give me some for that he’s waiting on his 100 and handicap multiple 99s but he’s a very accomplished shooter and been traveling around I mean really putting a lot of miles on on the vehicles coming to the shoots he’s competitive we know that he’s not there to be low man on the squad no no no no no we had Zach as low man a few times in today I was low man in the handicap between him and I it happens sometimes so we want to talk about your story um we’re it’s great that you can come on the the show here at the dollar yeah it’s it’s a fun time um you know I remember I think the first time we met was when we shot at the Grand uh was that a couple years ago or two years ago or no it was just last year wasn’t it last grand the last ground so Joe Ohio Joe Char Charo Slow Joe Not So Slow Joe he called me he says hey I got this Herbert Lewis guy and I said hey does he know how to shoot he thought he was a singer or something I said I said I didn’t know who it was and he’s like oh yeah he could shoot we put them on and I mean you could tell the listeners but we had great Rhythm I mean we went out there one day with the doubles and we were just like lien them up didn’t we all like run the first 50 or something like that yeah it was might have been one target missed on the first box but I said we got to 99 that on that Squad which was one of my many 99s at Double SP you were you were on a 99 train that week uh I was like he’s going to bust one and I don’t you didn’t break one at the Grand that week right but it was just all 99s right broke and then the same thing when we were shooting the Heartland you missed one in there that’s when we found out for sure that he hadn’t broke a 100 and now where you broke your 100 at the Dixie didn’t you or where was it at I broke the 100 at the Dixie yeah uh last year and I broke my first 200 at the Dixie the year before okay so it all just came back so so we got to start at the beginning you had a long Hiatus between now and when you started shooting why did you start shooting the first time and what happened that made you kind of pull away from the sport uh I started shooting the first time I was just a young kid uh in 1988 yeah my dad and I shot our first Kentucky State shoot uh a little before that and it I’m talking 6 months I’m just a kid on a three-wheeler dad had bought me yeah driving around to see these guys shooting a I I had to shoot a plywood up hand puller Target’s going straight up I’m like what is going on here this is cool you know shotguns going off I was born to my dad when I was six years old he said here’s you a shotgun come on let’s go Y and and we had a shotgun in our hand squirrel hunting rabbit hunting small game hunting whatever we can do uh and we found I seen these targets I said dad you got to come see this these guys are shooting these orange discs that are flying in the air I had no idea my dad’s a brick player you know he didn’t have any idea about this stuff uh so I went back and I wasn’t supposed to be there by the way I got in trouble so so that goes with me we go check it out so we go back the next weekend and we shot well fell in love with it you know it was like 40 yards we had 20 gaug jic because 40 yards we’re getting beat out this won’t happen anymore so we started buying you know better guns bigger guns uh somebody told us about the the registered shooting and ATA so we we got into it uh my dad was a complete opposite of what I call him a polar opposite of the way I shoot but he shot uh oneeyed dig it out same track track track bank I I’m and I’m a little biased but I’m thinking he’s the greatest shot ever my dad yep so we go to uh Kentucky State first register shoot was shot uh and he runner up the the first year in ‘ 87 in 88 I might have my years a year off here uh I won some Junior titles uh but in 80 it must have been ‘ 87 I met have Miss spoke there in ‘ 88 was when we shot off for the handicap championship and runner up there were six of us uh after four after the first round he and I stood alone and we went four rounds with just you and your dad me and Dad uh great moment yeah absolutely and and back then trap shooting had a pretty good following it had a big crowd you know we’d get we’ masked a crowd behind us and then they booed the man when he won after he had won it was 25 24 to 23 he broke 25 and I had a 24 horribly so you fast forward through the years of course they boot him and you beat that kid hey I was I was happy as he was if not happier and uh later in life uh we didn’t shoot a lot of register money wasn’t real fore yeah so uh he ended up uh passing away at 51 oh uh Had a Brain aneurism it was kind of tough but we got uh shooting meant nothing to me after that I didn’t even realize why I was shooting time until then okay I’m done shooting this is I’ve got to raise a family I’ve got kids I’ve got a wife it’s cos to me everything I got wake up raise your family raise my family Co comes along here I am I was off work for nine months uh I said I need something to do yeah so I go upstairs in the attic and get the in the garage and get my dad’s loader out same old me 9,000 rebuild start loading shells one of my going to do always sh I’m going to start shooting again yeah so I call a guy know yeah we can go shoot so start shooting I had an 870 at the time I ended up buying my uh I went to a gun auction bought a 3200 never fired it came back home going to show a friend of mine my 3200 and he happened to have the TMX that I quit with oh the same gun the same gun and he said you know I’m having eye problems I need to sell this thing I said I’ll take it and I mean how Wild is that that you took all those years off and that gun was gone and did all that shooting and then it found you back home again right when you came to it when I quit I said look I’m I’m done here’s the gun he sold it to me Larry Smith his name he sold it to me for the same exact price I sold it to him he shot it all that time he got away from him once and he went and tracked it down and got it back and he sold it back to me wow well that’s a heck story that’s a heck of a story there yeah I mean sorry to hear about your dad absolutely that’s tough speak on that I mean it just it sounds like for you it was about the family environment and that once you know you say well why do we shoot well why are we here and I was walking with Justin the other day and just talking about this and I’m like why are we here well Rick’s here Justin’s here you’re here Joe’s here you got all these people here and you’re like they’re here right now yeah but 15 years from now or 20 years from now who knows who be shoo who knows who’s going to knows what’s going to be and it’s like you think back about when we had all that time with Leo and he was here and you know you go to the shoot and you see the guys that are there and you’re like oh my God these are the greats you’re watching them in the greatness like right now in it and you’re you’re seeing it and you’re spending time with these guys and then it changes and I had the same thing happened uh with with Kelly I mean we traveled all around with him he’s our best friend in the world and he’s you know hunting ducks now and enjoying life well he just moved to Idaho so but he not shooting as much trap and you know and some people for whatever reason come and go and they fade away it it priorities come up life and that’s part of the I mean I’ve been fortunate I’ve done this and Zach has too mostly I mean you had a little Hiatus in there after college but you never stopped but not as far as the traveling I couldn’t go like that and I mean three years ago my son Tyler which you’ve met he he’s like Dad I want to shoot and I it lit a little fire under me sure cuz before it was like God you’ve been doing this so long it’s like yeah I love it but it’s like man I’m missing out on these family things and and where now he’s like I want to shoot I’m like let’s get it that’s why he’s down here at Spring break for him I’m like let’s go that family aspect brings a lot to it or or having a really close-knit friends the squad you know the people that you’re like and you know just to speak on on behalf of you as far as your competitor n um when we shot together our group of guys I mean we all wanted to win you and we were pushing each other important on Squad it’s so good when you have people that that don’t like abuse each other but push each other and that’s well Zach and I abuse each other a little bit I abuse little more exactly yeah no well that’s that’s trap talk after dark Z says after dark yeah all right folks we got to take a quick second and give a huge shout out to our title sponsor Craig off me and Ricky both shoot them we both love them yeah best gun in the industry I shoot him I sell them nothing better folks get yourself a Craig off your scores will increase yeah I mean Ricky’s got hundreds and hundreds and hundreds with his I mean I’ve got a few hundreds but but I’m always working to get a little bit better and they definitely help me that’s for sure so on top of that we also got to thank win I’m wearing the shirt today love this shirt if you’re down at the Grand pick one up yeah winning like I said Zach hundreds and hundreds and hundreds with my winning stock you know get a hold of Bobby Luke uh Bill get an appointment set up they will make you a better shooter with that winnning stock of course yeah the Grand’s the great place to do it give them a call get on their book it’s worth your time just remember winners shoot winnning with that being said let’s get back to the show one of the things like when we all shot together at the Heartland here’s the deal if I’m not winning I want my squadmates to win I want my friends to win that’s Point Blank number one thing you guys you guys both if I can beat you I’ve got a shot well I can win this thing well I said the same thing about Herby in the handicap I said that Herby that Herbert Lewis over there we need him in the Kolkata today because he’ll ding one he’s he’s a mean man you know it’s it’s like that thing like you said you know going back memory you shooting off against your your dad yeah you know I had that happen this past year with Tyler shooting off for the handicap the Craig off handicap at Vernal the Western Grand we both broke 99s and I said Son you can’t be getting in my money you know we laughed about it but when I went out there to shoot off I had that moment of God should I really be out here but I missed the first Target out and he breaks five of course he’s left-handed so he’s on four on two well when he walked to five and I walked over I looked to make sure he’s ready and he gave me that grin I thought oh yeah okay all right you know what I gave you a lead you better keep the pedal down or it’s over and he missed one he got over to One Missed another one we got done and and like you said people boo your dad I had some people like Rick GE and and my wife said it the best she said with our kids he has never let them win anything PlayStation basketball you got to earn it you got to earn it and that’s what makes you the Sho that’s why you are the shooter you are today because of that moment going back you know but that you know a 25y year Haus and then coming back I know a lot of Shooters when Co hit people that had quit or they like man it’s same thing get out and do something cuz some gun clubs I know in some areas wouldn’t let you shoot at all and I was teaching lessons through it and it was like some are like absolutely not some were like absolutely come here please get absolutely how many people you need you need 50 and I’m like oh no like 10 but it it’s a great thing with you coming back you know you’re shooting good you now you’re of course trying to make the all- americ team again you know that’s why you’re down here shooting I know you’re shoot with Not So Slow Joe you know this week so he’ll push you so when you came back I know you kind of had a little bit of a Funny Story and maybe a a learning moment for the listeners um you know tell us right when you came back with your experience was because it was during Co you said right yeah yeah I was off work for uh Co and uh like I say I got the loader down out of the attic and I was loading shells and I’m thinking what do I I need to do something I I’ve sit around here I worked on old cars and stuff uh and I got a few in the garage and I thought you know this is boring I need I want to do something so I’m going to burn these shells up I need to shoot I want to shoot some trap again anybody shootting trap well it happened to be the same old gun clubs you used to shoot I got hold of a guy and he said yeah we’ll go shoot so I started shooting again with an old 870 and uh ended up getting my TMX back uh we uh I don’t know maybe shot a few months and I said you know what the mid Americans coming up I’m from Northern Kentucky and and head up to Middle Town absolutely and uh I need to be I need to be an ATA member I need to get my membership updated so I called him U can’t remember the girl name it’s not important called her um she said I can’t find you in the in the database and I said I understand that I said it’s been 25 years she said what’s your ATA number do you have your old car I said it’s been 25 years I and and I’m telling you my dad and I were close as two coats of paint we were tight yeah when he died it it took a lot oh absolutely out of me I didn’t care about shooting everything yeah cuz that’s what you did with I had a few problems after that got out got through it um I said honey I really don’t know I I I I don’t have a clue I figured if you wanted to know you’d call the ATA and they could tell you y that’s why that’s what I’m doing I want to reup you were an old member yes I was she said okay let me do some checking and I’ll call back now at that time I’m thinking I’m talking to the main office ATA again I’m from the hills of Kentucky and I have no idea I figured it was a big Executive Suite with full of people you know it’s not it’s it’s a small and and I’m thinking they’re old they’re looking through the Bucks and peeling L is popping up all over the micro fish trying to look for you she says call me back like tomorrow so I called her back no she said I can’t find you she said you’re not on the computer I said well it’s been around 95 was the last time I registered Target something like that 96 see what you can find okay she called me back and maybe it was maybe in three days that time called her back she said look if you want to shoot and I’m telling her you know like Monday I got a shoot or not Monday but Thursday I’m getting ready to shoot here it starts on Thursday she said I’ll have to start using M well that’s fine you know I had no idea what the ATA done and it might be a good time right now to say you really need to check what the ATA does if you’re going to start back to shooting yeah if you been gone for 25 years you you got to remember if you started before that’s your number yeah well that or you now did you remember the the yardage that you start or ended at years ago I no idea and and I had friend of mine told me you know that g giv two yards off at one time yeah y reductions y mandatory got it twice you know over 25 years I mean you would think yeah I had no idea and I thought you know what after 25 years there that’s probably just the way that that’s the way I do it have you on a computer stting New Y so I go out I actually shot a handicap the second handicap I shot I won and uh I’m in there counting my money you know and and quad trillionaire office please and I learn end if they ever call you the office don’t go had home with the money folks they might change their mind if you wait a day so anyway I go in the office and tees there and she said you know I hate to say this but uh we’re going to have to disqualify you shot the wrong yardage and I’m saying No this is what they gave here’s what I’ve got and and I me just a straight honest mistake turns out the lady i’ called she was working from home because of Co she had no access to any she’s probably tired of hearing from me to you know if you anyway they took my win uh Dan Ryan my State Delegate came talk to me um told me all about uh what he had found in the hard files he had access to it somehow and he said he’ actually sent it out like the same Monday I was getting my card or my uh the Monday before the shoot anyway and he said he just hasn’t had time to get to you yet in the mail yeah snail mail takes a little while it takes a little while especially during Co yeah mail was really slow yeah things were tough then it worked out what was the yardage that they sent you then so it was I was on 25 A2 I won to shoot uh he couldn’t put me on the 27 for some reason yeah he ended up sticking me on the 26 and A2 so it cost me all the prize money and I got 6 and a half yards for a DQ well welcome back to the ATM I mean it it you know it it’s a learning moment obviously you’re never going to forget that but for the listeners you know if you if you’ve been away I gained a great friend out of that now Dan Ryan I’m I’m uh he done his job and he never done anything that the ATA rule book doesn’t yeah and he done a professional job at it yep uh and I was mad at him for doing that I mean I thought I earned that I work my butt off to break that win yeah uh Dan Ryan one of my closest friends Dan Ryan was with me when I broke my first 200 and my first 100 doubles he’s a good Danny Ryan I’ve known Danny for almost 100 years it seems like and I’ve shot a lot with him prior to his accident where he got all mangled up and and of course now he’s shooting again and and has been for several years and he’s handicap committee you know hopefully he’ll get on the EC and and and work his way up but yeah Danny know and and I talked to Danny quite Danny and I’ve been friends a long time and if there’s anything that comes up in clubs I call him I’m like hey Danny he’s like let me back to you and it’s usually not a rule it’s something with a yardage deal cuz people students in mind are like same situation I’ve had students come to me and be like Rick yeah I you know I’m going to start shooting ATA and I shot in the 70s and I’m like what do you mean start they well reup type deal and I’m like it’s been that long though like yeah I just and and I’m like well let me let me find out it’s not it’s not restarting it’s it’s it’s just getting back to the same thing right I mean CU Justin I mean he was gone for a long time right and then he came back so like was gone 20 years lesson for the listeners you know now young Shooters I mean they got the database the internet and all but back in the day with those records I mean if you shot and now you’re thinking about coming back because you’re listening to the podcast just make sure you get your right yardage when you go back best thing to do they’ll catch it well and the best thing to do honestly is get with your ATA delegate from from the state and and work from there up cuz Hey the ATA does a great job with a lot of stuff but some of the office people especially during Co like I said they didn’t have access to the rec how hard is it to keep all those records for all those years for all those people I mean it’s got to be hey I registered Targets this way give me your tet that’s right the old that’s how and that was the last I absolutely and that was a long I mean you said you started what 87 is yes see I started in ‘ 88 and I remember that I remember handwriting on the the squads and handwriting the scores we still did it that way when I started I mean there was still that thing where you put the card in yeah the small clubs I mean the ones I come through yeah all right folks we got to take another quick break and thank some more sponsors we’ve got game Masters Ricky you’re our guy over there right yep I I sell every gun you could imagine uh we got ton of Craig offs every other brand available so if you guys need something let us know we can hook you up withth the shoots uh we got vendor buildings in Arizona Ohio and then Sparta at the Grand American I do like sucking up that free AC in Sparta that’s for sure I mean it’s a good time come by and say hi to us that’s right also um shot tracker I mean we’ve we’ve had great success with them Ricky you’ve been involved since day one so it’s like having a coach on the end of your Barrel it’s a great tool especially for doubles that’s what I really like it for you can see the transition moving from the first Target to the second target that’s where a lot of people get lost in no man’s land you know losing that Target I love that and I also love new software update the stuff that’s coming down the pipe those guys are constantly innovating so with that being said let’s get back to the show so so let’s get into your your abilities because obviously they’re high you you you pretty much won a bunch of crap as soon as you came back to the the the game you were just winning winning winning winning everywhere you went so where did you learn your style from and and what type of shooting are you doing are you like me and Ricky where you’re kind of down at the house you’re poking them out or you you’re a digger or you high gun or kind of us through what you do in singles doubles and handicap on uh on Singles and handicap I shoot about the same way uh I’m I dig it out uh I I like to hold a low gun I like to see the target I I’ve been I’ve had bad experiences with bead checking uh from holding a low gun and actually from a gun not act 100% fitting me I have to index the old gun I shot I had to index it to get it Y and I find myself occasionally looking back at the bead uh but I I like to dig them out uh I hold like the wall chart shows on the Trap I’ll hold off the corners off center right and three and then in between those two on two and four uh doubles is more I’d like to thank both of you guys and Zach helped me a bunch with one simple statement uh yeah I said simple you go I’m spot shooting doubles now my doubles gun was a was I had a BT or a sator for a little while with double releases they started me out with a double release gun uh it beat me to death uh but I broke some 99s with it some some 987s uh actually got a db81 with double releases in it and with a gold Double release the Precision that thing was that thing was a Cadillac compared to where I was uh and it spot shoot track spot shoot track now I hadn’t shot any doubles to amount to anything but I was doing fair with it I had a lot of trouble coming off the gun on the second target as a new shooter always does I could about to get the first one every time but then it started getting kind of if it wasn’t where it was supposed to be yep then I was in trouble I miss so and one one statement you know you can’t shoot them where they are or where they’re supposed to be you have to shoot them where they are I thought wow this guy’s a genius somebody did you get that statement I still St so what I done was I brought my gun to instead of holding it halfway I kind of brought it down a bit to get a track on that Target much like a sing over a handicap yep because when I see it I want to follow that path and track through it and let it go and I do shoot a release trigger uh I developed a Flinch when I come back somehow I don’t know if it’s a brain thing or CH see a vision issue or it could have been the way you’re you’re not seeing them right and how many guns I took apart like what’s wrong with this because my brain says there’s enough pressure on that finger to uh to the trigger blade to break it yeah it should break and it doesn’t so you release Double release everything release everything release everything release and and so you came back and it just immediately started happening or no it was only about 4 months or so uh and again I don’t have any idea what cost and I do have a lot of vision I shouldn’t say a lot of vision troubles I I see fine if I listen to my eye doctor and I got an eye doctor that he’s young he doesn’t know anything about target shooting but he wants to learn and he made me glasses I don’t know how many times over and over and over me trying to get to focal Center oh I wanted I kind of hold my my head I guess I don’t get to see myself but I can see myself looking through the top of my lens and he’s want to put it in the center you know you’re like move it over here yeah I need it here best thing to go is up a little bit and and because a lot of Shooters like the way Zach you’re you’re automatically you’re turning your head in so if it’s centered like you’re regular glasses it it can be tough depending on how they make and there’s the technology nowadays is through the roof compared to when I started shooting or you started sh I learned that from Mike rer he said he said people don’t shoot like this they shoot like this and so he took all of his move them over and he just knew he and he’d he’d actually like when you go into his tra and fit you for glasses he’d have you mount your gun with Planos and he’d Mark the spots where you were in the center with uh like a uh marker a scotch marker whatever black Mar and then he’d take back and he’d make sure that that prescription was set up that Center and you know that that makes a lot of sense I know I’ve heard Frank rivaly does a really good job with that too I mean I haven’t I’ve never used prescription personally so I don’t know you know anything about it other than what I learned through Mike when I was you know dealing close fours back in the day all right guys we got to take another quick break and thank some more sponsors we got to say big thank you to White Flyer America’s best targets you make them we break them right Rick that’s right we got the new Eco uh flyer that we helped design myself and Sean Holly that’s out now available out of the Georgia Factory that’s an awesome Target look for that you know going to be available hopefully Everywhere by 2025 but yeah they are best Target in the industry I’m looking forward to the blue gray shootout this year at the Grand too that’s going to be a fun event yeah it’ll uh you’re in that dude this year aren’t is that we both are aren’t we yeah well yeah I’m in it I didn’t know if you made it or not see yeah that’s okay I I I I skated right in there don’t you worry but you know we got another sponsor we got to thank shotguns West the peas baby check out these Wings y Ricky don’t got these he ain’t that stylish folks listen Zach tries to wear these driving down the road doing podcast it’s okay we still love it hey when you look good you don’t have to apologize remember that not only you hit more targets but you could look good doing it give Ryan a call that’s right with that being said let’s get back to the show it’s amazing that you got back and you know that style has it always been that way for you down on the house and track it out your whole career yeah yeah so point of impact are you shooting a pretty flat gun a pretty high gun or your guns different because I know you shoot an over under and a single barrel they’re separate right yeah it’s a db81 uh with the straight rib on it so it’s like a 60/40 top Barrel maybe 50 50 okay and the tube is it’s got a tube I think it might be a pigeon gun I don’t know but it’s got a tube in the bottom barrel and it’s like it’s ground to 20,000 it’s 20 and 30 and it’s kind of got a I’m going to say 8020 okay I still have to bury it on on a high-rising Target drive into the target how about your Single Barrel The Single Barrel and the tm1 I shot was uh had a money maker rib put on it and it’s a teeter totter style uh it’s 100 % all day uh I just got a site uh and it’s maybe 9010 uh maybe a 100 okay so I’ve only shot it a week or I’m sorry a month or a little over right at a month maybe just over a month now and it I like to get to be friends with it we’re getting along pretty good well yeah you’re heading pretty hard I was watching you smoke balls I know I can rebuild a tm1 forever and they’ll last forever yep but when you’re down if you’re going to shoot for ho8 and Haas or All American team I needed something with some quality to it uh and and I don’t want to I’m not trying I love my tm1 it’s a great gun it’s probably the newest part on is 32 years old so your age Zach yeah and he’s looking rough I look good I still got the receipt as a matter of fact the stock I got on my tm1 came off the TMX that I bought back I don’t know how many years really fact I’ve kept my whole your whole life so what I would recommend is I wouldn’t sell it though maybe just hang on to it right yeah cuz you you already sold it once and had to find it again right so now hang it hang it on the wall put it in a gun safe you might need to bring it back out so going from where you were to coming back to the game you’ve obviously stepped into the competitor Circle very very quickly yes what what are you doing mentally or physically to prepare are you practicing a lot do you do a lot of mental stuff are you riding goals or do you just you know come to the shoot and hope for the best I kind what what’s going on in your mind that’s allowing you to win these high rounds and handicaps and and consistently go out there and and put big scores up it that’s a that’s a good question uh years ago uh to kind of jump back to when I got dced it kind of hurt my feelings because I thought I’d earned that win and it brought me to a point to where I have to make a choice I need to okay I either need to quit or I’ve got to shoot now if I’m going to shoot I don’t want to halfway do it that’s right you know 100% so I’m I’m I’m after I’m over 50 I’m going into the fourth quarter in life here so if I’m ever going to about the third quarter I hope so I hope we got good doctors when I get there anyway uh I’m going to have to do something so well I didn’t know how to do it I mean I if you added all my years together you know it wasn’t very much I’m still green under the gills I’m just going to go out there and try to break every Target now it’s a simple game right you got one target you got to break it a thousand times to win a HOA that’s right you don’t break a 100 you don’t break I use your method on Singles I heard you on one of your podcasts you use five I try to use fives all the time uh unless it’s doubles sometimes I’ve been using it on doubles yeah those fives and doubles don’t no no no no no but uh and to be really competitive I I I don’t know I don’t know what the what what gives you I think it’s a good strong will and a focus yep you have to have a mental focus you have to do it with a purpose you don’t go out there to halfhazard Le I see so many people and I’m probably no one to advise a shooter on what to do they’ll call before they’re ready to shoot they don’t even realize it they’re going through the motion oh yeah they’re mounting their gun does your gun even fit yep they don’t a lot of people don’t know and there’s nothing wrong with it everybody has their own reason to shoot it happens a lot though what you’re what you’re discussing here is is people do they they they go into it with a 50% attitude and they uh they just going through the motions well I I and I think to give those people a little bit of credit I think it’s because of nerves right like you go out there sometimes and like like I just did it today I missed two on my last post and and it was because I hadn’t you know I hadn’t been breaking bigger handicap scores consistently lately and I’m working on some things with my stock and it’s really starting to work and it’s like okay you get there and you get nervy and you stop doing what you need to do and I can only imagine okay if you’re a new shooter you you walk to the line and you’re just like oh it’s my turn and I better you know I better throw the gun up and shoot because it’s my turn and I don’t want everyone to wait on me that’s what you you kind of feel bad and you don’t you don’t yeah hey he did he goes I shot and I looked down was on the third box and he’s like my turn and I go yeah and he’s like and he I was like Zach just and I’m thinking okay and he did he that was fine and then when the last trap he I mean he was ground pounding these targets the first 20 and when he walked by me from 5 to one I just said I give fist BU as what was doing I’m like stay in it and that’s a deal where he he’s had a tendency to go over to one and he kind of quick and he did the targets were they had a tendency to lift well in that situation you don’t want to like you know try to protect the score but you want to just do the same thing that’s where your mindset goes to hey I just I just broke the last 20 let’s get that mindset into I’m breaking targets not what am I going to do yeah and and you get you get defensive I mean sometimes you get to that point where you’re like okay I’m trying to hold the score together instead of attacking in the first 95 shots today I was attacking the and I got defensive and when they got high I just didn’t all right trap talk listeners let’s take a couple seconds and thank a couple more sponsors first of all Remington’s been with us since day one I’ve been shooting these shells since 2007 I shoot the Nitro 27 from 27 yd line ounce and e 7 and A2 and STS ounce and E eights for singles and doubles they’ve worked great for me as they do a lot of top shooters all around the country give them a try don’t forget the gun club line when you’re practicing and and you’re wanting to save a little bit of money we’d also like to thank another sponsor Outlaw engineering Randy freston R2 I’ve known Randy since 1988 um they do engineering surveying drafting GIS civil structural Land Development Wetland permitting they do it all and they’re friends of Trap Shooters I mean they’re trap shooting family they’ve been in the ATA forever his dad’s been involved they’re involved they’re beautiful family they’re great people and we just love that they listen to the show and we love that they support tra yeah his dad was past president 1989 so I really want to thank those guys for the support and really appreciate it here at trap with that being said let’s get back to the show it’s so it’s so simple right like you just brought that up and you’re like well people you know they go out there and they’re just not quite ready for whatever reason right it could be nerves it could be you know maybe they’re not practice but what I’m hearing from you Herber to kind of circle back is be purposeful and have a plan like you you come to the line and you’re like I’m going to do this today and I want to win and and I see you as a competitor I mean now the difference between Herby and us is me and Ricky are not scared to kind of talk a little bit behind the line but Herbert when he gets real quiet he’s about to shoot like he he kind of goes off to the corner me and Ricky are you know Jammer back remember when we were shoo at the Heartland Grand in Bullard you know and her’s over there like yeah he just kind of slinking in the background like on Sunday we’re going out to shoot this handicap I’ll never forget this because I mean there was two two events well a couple events that I I think of at the Harland but but the last handicap on Sunday you know me you and Boward you know we go and back and forth and just like the podcast and and her’s just like you know and he’s just smok smok and he grounds 98 into dust like they’re singles wins the handicap and we’re proud of him wins the all which was awesome um but what I can remember the most fun we had and this was at my expense one time but we went out and we were I mean guys I’ve never been on a single Squad where we were pounding singles as hard as we were pounding and at the time I wasn’t missing singles I was I think 500 straight or I mean between the Grand and there I was I was a bunch straight and we go into that singles and we’re all going in the last box and everyone’s straight and I end up missing one for $499 and these guys they Hammer me now the only the only little glimmer of light is the next day we go out to shoot singles again and on the first box I think Mr Marshall the first or the second box first box I missed you missed nobody missed nobody missed on the first Bock we all ran them and we hung them and I looked at the boys and I said I’m not missing today if you guys can hang in here and Herby I looked at Herby and I said you got me Herby and he nodded and I said he’s good and I I went over to Bullard I said you in and he says I’m good and I looked at Jay and he didn’t look so confident and and we all we all we we all proceeded to run but there was another hiccup that happened that gave us was was it Justin or Rich Justin missed it was Justin I think it was Justin it was Justin let me back and I said I had never let me hold on let me knock on wood first I had never been hung for a 499 and it was close Ricky talks about carel all the time and when he did that 499 video the day before and then he open I didn’t do the 499 video I think we did it we but but that that when I went out there and I ran that and I seen that door open I said all right guys let’s lay up and Herby Herby was locked in on that last box he like but you know it’s all good fun but we were we were just in a Zone absolutely we had a great Squad and that’s part of you know what we’re we’re enjoying it and that’s part of this game is you know it’s not a cheap game no it’s very expensive especially travel I mean coming down here all the way to Florida it’s spring break folks right now the hotel rooms if you’re staying in a hotel be two three $400 a night and in 3 weeks they’re $79.99 you know so it but it is it’s a you know what when we go out on the line we always joke and have a good time but when we’re standing on that line we’re mean business now there is times like the other day we’re shooting the singles we were getting some illegal targets I shot mine my son Tyler got two he turned him down Zach shot his you know so we’re like you know and Zach will get like a slow pull at times and he’ll look at me and I’m like that looked good good you know he’s like oh you so good and we but it is like Hey we’re we’re all competitors and like I said on my squad I want the people my friends I want them to win and and that’s how it should be you you got to be a a a gracious winner or gracious loser even to be a gracious winner both sides both I mean you got to I mean I I can I can understand the pain that you felt on that handicap because that would probably burn my gears too to think like oh I you know I came back I I thought I did the right thing I won and I got this money and like that might upset me at some level but then Z would have been i’ have I’d have been really upset folks but but but that being said the way you handled it and that relationship with Danny that you formed and coming back and giving you the Vigor to say you know what that was God’s way of saying I’m going to make a decision and maybe if that wouldn’t happened maybe you would have won and they’d have paid you the money and maybe you wouldn’t have jumped in as heavy as if very possible there a solid God has a solid plan absolutely I’m sure of that and and that’s all part of it and I’ve always said my wife she supports me 100% when she travels with me I mean to the point she’ll pick up a job for six months and then it’s time to go shooting I got to go but she’s a great employee I wish she would find something she loved but she loves she loves you she loves you she r with me anywhere we go uh and it’s and it’s been it’s been a great trip like said like Ry said earlier it’s always been expensive yeah and that’s just the way it’s going to be you know we can’t really turn the prices back worth it’s worth it I’m telling you uh I’m so glad that it has worked out the way that it has uh God knows how smart you are how dumb you are sometimes he has to close all the doors and leave you one that’s right you got a choice now dummy that’s right and if you don’t do it we’ve talked you know we’ve all done it you know hey we’re all moving forward absolutely and that’s and that is the the great thing about especially in your case your wife she supports you that’s your biggest fan absolutely and and we have that I mean I’m fortunate my wife I wouldn’t be able to do this without my wife I couldn’t do it without Beth absolutely it is it’s one of those things that and a lot of people kind of they they don’t think about that of what’s on the other side of how are you getting to do this you know and people ask me all the time you’re gone all the time and I’m like yeah I am I’m teaching a lot you know we’re shooting a lot we’re doing podcast all time like how can you do this I said my wife yeah Point Blank thank God for FaceTime right that’s right you can talk to your family and look CR at your grand kids or your kids and when I was my kids’s age you know thinking back it’s like man years ago when I traveled a lot and I was like it’s a whole different world war now if I’m gone I can you know Tyler’s not with me boom kick it on face hey buddy you can actually see him versus just talking to him on the phone makes a huge difference it is it is a big commitment and it reques a lot from everyone involved uh financially from a Time perspective and from a dedication perspective especially if you want to compete at a high level hey trop talk listeners let’s take a quick second to thank a couple more amazing sponsors SOS clay shoot management they’re doing a fantastic job I love the app I love being able to see everything on my phone instantaneously it’s freaking awesome Rick what do you think yeah Greg pink and his group over there I mean they’ve got a majority of the satellite Grands majority of the state shoots I think it’s 40 plus State shoots they’re doing but the app honestly we were doing a little beta testing with that at the spring Grand it’s awesome you can see your squad if they paid you know you can see your options your payouts the whole works at your fingertips great deal they’re just how much money he made before he even got off the line he was like Hey I’m buying lunch I’m like yeah good job we’re good to go that’s right we also got gun and trophy insurance I mean they’re the best in the business I I know they’re they’re great price Ricky you’re familiar with them right yeah Cole Larry kushman been longtime supporters of myself and and I’ve been a supporter of them and you know especially with my college team you know we require insurance it’s so fast and easy to sign up and get your insurance in literally 10 minutes you can have your guns insured and and they’re just great they’re great to deal with like I said you can do your trophies also you know your your uh wild life animals and that such and your guns it’s just a great it’s always good when you’re traveling around to have that peace of mind and know that you don’t have to worry about losing your stuff forever and these are expensive things especially when you got those Craig offs you got to keep them insured so oh exactly that being said let’s get back to the show coming back only being in a few years and winning a lot is there any major goals that you have on your mind that you want to get done like what are you trying to work out between now and when you sto shooting I absolutely have goals and I think goals are very important uh Keith ditto and Ricky Marshall that’s my number one goal those are good goals ditto he’s coming for you no uh if you like I said ear if you can beat him you’re probably in the game but I but anyway uh I want to I want to finish like the Pinnacle marks in trap shooting I want a grand slam I want four by four uh I’m sure there’s I’m not real good off the cuff at thinking but now I do write these down Y and I like I like the the little moments on the road there that you done there see I told you people like it I like it on the road with Zack Nini I do I do travel with Richard Marshall Jr going to the gun club he’s always traveling I am and and that is you know those are important goals absolutely right if you got a goal an immediate goal and you you you’re able to look at that and read it put it on the fridge put it on your locker whatever you do you know put it in your truck read it every day your brain will process that and break it down that that’s your main thing with goals and and I’ve said this you know I was fortunate as a little kid I learned this from the Olympic drain Center and my Coach Frank hoppy same thing you got to have goals because we as humans we love self-satisfaction so you know you you do you set a goal how you know break your first five straight exactly it’s I mean I just did a class in California where a lady broke five straight her first five ever dude you thought she broke a hundred and a couple of the guys that had shots some they were like what’s going on and I’m like that is awesome and I get even chills because it’s was the cool thing of hey she even said it coming to this class I had a goal I wanted to break a five straight and she did it and her her boyfriend was there shooting too and he looked at me and he goes you just cost me some money well it doesn’t matter what level it is it’s what you want to get to and and if you say okay I’m down here well then it’s okay to set the bar up one level and hit that bar and then one bar up and hit that bar I’ve always you know and this was to my Det at the beginning but I always started with really really really small goals and tried to work my way all the way up the ladder now my goals are a lot bigger and I think a lot bigger and I think that’s helped me grow as a shooter because I have some small goals but I also have some really really big you know out there hanging long-term goals because you know to say I got to check all these off the list before I get to that one it’s you know it’s one of those shoot for the stars type of thing I think you really have to you really have to say well I really want to get to these these big things you need to set the short-term goals the the best thing to do folks is is set short-term goals very achievable your midterm goals which could be your yearly goals and then you have your your longterm your bucket list and you know like you said you’re talking about the 400 that was my bucket list now you always think of the bucket list is like is it possible absolutely but is it going to happen you never know and when I did that 400 that timeby I’m not kidding you I wouldn’t sat in the truck and I was like oh my cuz I was by myself at the shoot my family was there and and I’m like I just did one of my it was like a like awe moment for me and then I’m like oh wait I got to go shoot off for the doubles and the handicap the doubles was like do do didn’t care first shoot off I was in that just like because I was still in this all moment yeah then I had to regroup and it was against Cory D for the handicap and Cory goes why can you done like you did in the doubles I went around the handicap and I said I’m not leaving Vernal these grounds without running out this handicap I don’t care if we go 10 Rounds I’m not missing and I broke 25 and one but you have those moments and that’s why folks set those goals set them so you can achieve stuff because that’s what keeps you coming back all right folks let’s take a quick second and thank some brand new incoming sponsors of the show these are personal friends of mine fellow clay Shooters and lovers of the outdoors Rick and Carla Burke at 73p pointers Ranch Rick Rick tell them what we’re doing well we’re doing a giveaway at the Grand American so they’ve graciously donated a oneperson hunt for I think it’s what is it 18 Quail or 12 chucker or eight pheasants uh your choice guy and dog uh we got dinner overnight lodging you know breakfast so yeah I think it’s going to be a great uh giveaway it’s great thing um it’s valued at like 1,500 bucks um you can obviously bring a guest if you’d like but you know it’s about an hour out of St Louis airport and if you’re lucky maybe me and Rick will go out there with you and do some bird hunting cuz this is an awesome place it’s a great time and if you’re local to this area it’s not that far out of the city so you can be in the office and then be hunting in the afternoon so they’re great great people and they love this show so we really really appreciate the love and support yeah we’d like to thank Rick and Carla we really appreciate that also we’ve got Midstate precious medals Ron Prescott he’s a great guy for all your gold and silver needs Ricky tell him about our friend yeah Ron uh he graciously donated a 10 o silver bar to our live inperson podcast in Tucson and you know he has everything I bought a bunch of silver from him you know we got our silver and gold for the uh the fun day at at the Nevada state shoot on Monday this year you know John got all the silver and gold for the Nevada state shoot so look him up for your silver and gold needs he’ll give you the best price out there he really is and and he’s a friend of the Trap Shooters I mean he’s looking to get gold and silver to these gun clubs for their shoots at the lowest price across the country he’s doing them a service and helping grow the sport so you know thank you so much for that Ron yeah thank you Ron we appreciate it with that being said let’s get to the show I’d like to say uh at one time U before I had a real good setup before I had a good mindset mindset mental game uh a good friend of mine named Bob Klinger I know Bobby very well great guy Absol kind of a guy he said you know you’re shooting good enough you can make the all- americ team and we’re shooting calutas and 50 birds around the hillside you know uh and I’ve known Bobby from 25 years ago and I thought you know at the after the after the episode with the DQ I thought you know what I I need to try it I need to just try it and see what I’ve got uh and along the way I’ve had a lot of good I had no idea okay you’ve been out of the ATA 25 years you’ve shot four months now uh what do you want to what do you want to do as far as your ATA career I wouldn’t have any idea think about it you know you don’t know anything so I want to see if I can shoot I want to see if it’s self-satisfaction again I want to see if I can shoot um I’m standing on the 26 and A2 yard line uh but I ended up getting surrounded by by good people uh Jim Walker Jr he helped me a ton with how to do it uh Carl Chadwell had a had a moment with me at uh New York he said this is here’s I didn’t know how to look up points I didn’t know what to do what the reason I’m saying this is I said you know if you’re going to try to make an All-American run and you have no no idea what to do throw everything you got every time you can to see what happens that’s right you got to learn so I shot a lot of shoots uh two years ago and and I was up on the on the list I mean I’m making points and I was up on the first team pretty good ways uh of course as I ended up the grand I had a decent Grand I don’t remember my points that year but it kind of fell for the last two shoots of the year one of them was in Iowa uh and lost from first team into second team to 33rd is that right they take 12 and 20 32 captain of the third team I was number 33 and I got bumped out at the harman Grant oh it hurts I had no idea yeah so so again these two individuals they kind of uh come along and see you as a young shooter you know you’re doing good this is what you need to do and last year I kind of done a little better as far as cuz you know the money’s not there all the time seems like if you’re throwing it at it everything you got every Sho you got you got to be fiscally responsible with it yeah so so as a working man you got to you got to have like a a t Sho mindset and that’s a lot really y uh my job right now is great I can take off the time I need I’ve got uh I’ve got a great job uh and as Co has come by they they’ve give us the time off uh without pay all all that we want so and that was never in 70 years that’s never happened uh that’s that’s another God moment where he’s saying okay dummy here you go put your turn go so so I want to go uh I I want to go as much as I can try to get shoots in and I’d love to I’d love to beat Keith and Ricky in a single shoot off with the Grand and find a ring someday you know that’s another one Buck wh go to go yeah you have to and you know these guys you know when Rick’s doing it professionally I mean he does it for a living I mean coaching traveling instructing every aspect of you know and and so you know and like I you know I do it I I like to have fun professional too folks don’t let him I’m a professional adviser and I love I love to shoot trap all right trap talk listeners got to take a few more seconds for some Shameless plugs this time we’re plugging trap talk we got the hats on why are you wearing the same hat as me I’m going all gray we got hats we still got some available right Rick yeah we got multiple hats available uh we got a big order of hats coming out too you can get them on the website John will put the link either up here or down here not sure that’s up to John so I gave him both yeah you never know where he’s going to put him that being said we love you guys wearing the hats at trap shoots it really shows the support it shows the love take pictures tag Us in Instagram tag us on Facebook you know send us messages you guys wearing the hats uh wear them proud and we got a big reveal coming for the grand I think you guys are really going to like it it’s going to be awesome we’re going to have a place for you to maybe get some merchandise so more details to come with that being said let’s get back to the show it’s different when you have to work a completely different job come into here and you want to say okay these guys are the pros these are the bad The Bad Dudes that winning all the time and you want to get in that dish and but it takes effort it takes time and it’s it’s a big goal but if you do it right you’ll be tired at the end of the day oh absolutely it’s mentally draining it is but um especially today was mentally draining with The Walking we did too oh yeah as you can tell by Zach’s lovely hat he sweated a little bit but I caught him walking with and I was behind him I’ve seen you must have been I was they left me well I took a shortcut they I didn’t know which way they went cuz I was back I well I got stopped by a guy and then I turned up and they were way I thought I think they went right well they ended up going left I went right I said I walked about a little over two they walked about three miles but that’s good we absolutely and that’s what we’re trying to do we’re we’re really just and I and Z we want to be around a long time absolutely that would be nice to be around and be able to enjoy the sport and my wife’s my doctor too she’s uh always medicating or telling me what’s wrong with me and I got on the the cupcakes and the and the you know all that stuff and and it was heartburn heartburn heartburn and she said it’s the sugar man you just need to get off the sugar try it hey I’m clean it’s like I’m like a I’m like a recovering junky I’m clean and eating kale now no ho no h for you I feel great absolutely she said you get detox like it’s a drug yeah you’ll feel great and it’ll give you strength will give you energy for later down the road and you need that energy absolutely especially you do it right cuz you have to go out there and dig out well just think here we’re shooting only two events a day here at the dollar because they have a shooting time frame from 9 to and during regular business hours it’s like 9 to 4 now here at the shoot I think it’s they can shoot till 8:00 pm and that’s why on on the singles Championship they’re only allowing 90 squads you know because the the numbers don’t don’t compute right but if we’re at like State shoots and we’re shooting you know 100 singles 100 handicap 100 doubles and then at the end of the day you got to shoot off sometimes it it can be draining and it is you get so tired that’s why you know Zach and I have talked about it and Justin and and we all shoot together most all the time and we’re you know especially Zach and I we’re really talking about dude we need to cut some L bees and yeah it’s just it’s just it’s just think about the next level of game you could get to if you have some endurance I mean you look at some of these guys that are that are really performing at a high level too I mean I don’t think it’s hurting him to not have that extra weight carrying around all day long and being able to have go in there and shoot a lot of lot of targets look at look at ditto I mean Keith and I have joked for years I mean he goes and runs now I ain’t running folks I’ll be doing some walking but Keith will go run like three or four miles you know in between events sometimes and I told him I said I’ll come with you on a golf cart as he’s running you know joking I you know and we joked about it but I said seriously just the little bit of walking helps you gets that that blood pumping and and everything you know y it’s it’s got to be um you know mentally a good thing to push through something hard like that like running because you know you’re pushing yourself to that next level so um there’s only benefit from I don’t think it can hurt anybody absolutely is there any other good tips or things that you’d like to share with Shooters before we get out of here today if you’re new shooter or even if you’re an old shooter fundamentals you got to have fundamentals you got to have quality Equipment and and that’s to do it serious if you want to take the the shooting serious if you want to finish great uh at the end of the year and be the number one allamerican number two All-American it takes a commitment it takes good fundamentals it takes good equipment it takes good shelves you have to have all those and you have to have the mindset to that you’re going to win 100% you know and I think there’s been a lot of good information here for the listeners today Herbert I I really appreciate you sharing your story absolutely it’s a lot to kind of go away from the sport come back to the sport push at a high level we’re definitely going to have to have you on the show again when you hit another one of your Milestone goals I think that 400 or that grand slam maybe that ring but you know we’re looking for good things from you and I know we’re going to shoot together a little bit this year so we’re going to have some good time but we really appreciate you absolutely Bud thank you all for having me thank you we appreciate it and the trap Talk podcast is brought to you in part by RM shooting clinics have Ricky take your game to the next level if you want to shoot hundreds of hundreds of hundreds give Ricky a call today Zach Nini Financial we believe in putting people first [Music] [Applause] [Music]

  1. 54:27 Herbie is one of the finest persons I have ever met.. not many people know what happened last Friday at the buckeye. I had a stroke and lost vision in my left eye. And Herbie is taking time to help me adjust to one eye. He is the real deal.

  2. Guys, I’m a retired Army Command Sergeants Major, now live in Florida and have picked up trap shooting a few months ago. My mentor is Larry Sowers, Ohio Hall of Fame member, All American and winner of countless singles and doubles titles. I’ve told him about the down to earth yet uncommonly unselfish expertise you bring to trap shooters around the World. Would love to see him as a guest on your show. His wisdom, old school stories and wit would be enjoyed by your audience! You guys have helped my shooting an awful lot. You are genuine and the real deal. I’ve broken countless 23’s and 24’s but have yet to to achieve the perfect 25. With your, your guests and my friend Larry’s encouragement I’m hoping to get it done this weekend. We shoot at Robinson Range in Dunnellon Fl. Bunch of great folks. Thanks again for all you do for the sport.
