well good afternoon everybody uh I’m Dan Sullivan executive director for the Memorial tournament presented by workday and uh work welcome to the 49th Memorial Tournament we have a great week ahead of us and um this is the traditional timing for the Jack Nicholas press conference and I’m going to take one thing from Scott um and with that timing uh we this year because of our change of date we’ve had the unique opportunity to recognize uh the Jack Nicholas award recipients on Tuesday as opposed to Sunday giving the D1 player of the year the chance to play in the Memorial tournament which is obviously exciting for him and and uh for the tournament so what we are doing today is recognizing uh the nation’s college player of the year and not only division one but division 2 three Nia as well as the junior college level um we’re excited to have the gentleman here they’ve come from all over the country and uh I know a couple of them played in the US Open qualifier yesterday um the uh in addition to recognizing the Jack Nicholas award recipients we have a special opportunity because of the timing and because of our friend Julie iner being here with us as the Honore to also recognize um the Julie iner Award winner which goes to the top D1 cient player in her final year eligibility within College uh and so Julie will come up and visit with us in a second um we’re very much honored to have Anil buser here who’s our uh presenting sponsor founder co-founder and um executive chairman of workday um workday is a very unique position where they are not only um sponsoring the Julie iner Award but they’re also sponsoring the Jack Nicholas award so we have this great opportunity to bring thank you Anil and workday for being such a great supporter of college sports um so I don’t think any other place has that opportunity to recognize uh great College athletes so at this time I’m going to ask Julie to come on up talk a little bit about the Julie iner word and recognize that player who unfortunately is not here today but we’ll definitely recognize her and a release is going out today Julie thank you Dan thank you everyone um first of all congratulations to you guys um golf is really hard and you guys are very good at what you do so congratulations to all you um I’m here to uh recognize uh with workday uh my iner award and um just to kind of a little Backtrack on it um the LPGA qualifying school is always in um the fall and a lot of girls were leaving early to go to the lpj and not really finishing out their um obligation to their school their teammates um and their coach and uh you could be like the third or fourth person on the team and maybe have a really good chance of winning a national championship and your best players are leaving for the LPGA so Ann Walker from Stanford and I got together and uh we put this award together so basically it’s for the highest ranking senior player that finishes four years of college to their school and with that um uh we start their career workday gives them $50,000 to start um on the LPGA uh we get a sponsor exemption in Portland Oregon um and they go right to the second stage of qualifying school and then um they spend 2 days with me for on a mentorship and I have them come out they stay at my house and we play golf and we just talk about um you know what’s their next Journey uh because going from college golf to professional golf is a huge jump everything is really done for you in college travel um when you practice what you eat when you work out and then all of a sudden you leave school and you’re out there on your own so I try to help them um navigate their next year in um in professional golf and this is the fifth year I’ve done this and ingred Lindberg from LSU is the recipiant of the Julie iner Award she’s a five-time All America she’s from Sweden um just an overall great player uh I think she’s going to really do well on the LPGA uh she’s playing her first professional event this week week in Michigan on the Epson tour she’s 24 years old um and just um a great ball Striker I think she’s going to really do well so I’d like to thank Anil and workday for really giving me this opportunity to uh have this award um I wanted to award that uh that I could kind of um keep mentoring these girls and um this is my fifth and um I talked to most of them uh once a week uh so it’s it wasn’t just an award I wanted to give and and move on this is something that I was really passionate about is helping these girls navigate um on the tour because it can be lonely out there and and uh sometimes you just need uh someone to talk to so thank you to Jack and the memorial and Dan Sullivan for giving me this opportunity to announce my winner here and um look forward to the week thanks thank you Julie and we couldn’t be more proud that you’re our 2024 Honore we look forward to tomorrow afternoon for those of you who are staying with us tomorrow afternoon 2:00 on the driving range we we’ll have an opportunity to recognize Julie uh 2 p.m. 2 p.m yep um okay now uh we are going to hand it over to Dustin Roberts to come on up and and uh introduce the gentlemen who are representing the Jack Nicholas award this year and move on with the program thanks let me get out of the way here thank you Dan and before we get get started I’d like to add my congratulations to ingrad ingr who in my we love having the guys here that uh have won the uh the awards each year and I I hear some of the resumés and see some of the the scores are shot 67 67 I would lucky to ever shoot a 67 in college and uh you know the scores that these guys shoot today and the way they do it and uh I think it’s they’re they’re going to finish up their college career with they do it if they go to the go to the tour which I think most of them probably will uh they’re going to have a great background and a great great future in front of them I love seeing what’s happened to college golf this year the last couple of years you see more college golf being shown on television and I think that has been a great Plus for the game I think it’s a great Plus for it’s uh not only for uh uh for the game but also for recruiting for you for for you coaches uh to see these kids being played on television have them display their talents uh it’s uh it’s something very special so congratulations to all of you I think [Applause] Wallen this way thank you congratulations you grant griel [Applause] thank you appreciate it thank you congratulations guys anything else you want me to do you want me to turn over to the Q&A uh yeah you go ahead all right so we’re gonna start our Q&A with giving each of the recipients a chance to ask Mr Nicholas a question oh you want me to stay up here then so yeah sure that’s fine and how are we doing that Jackson co go ahead get you started um you know there’s thousands and thousands of PJ tour Pros what do you feel like separated you from the rest of them well first thing you do is the same thing you’re doing right now is you go win and um you know I I go back to my college and uh I played uh we we didn’t play as freshman and I didn’t play as a sophomore I made the Walker Cup team and my golf coach you guys wouldn’t do this today I went I made the Walker Cup team in the golf course says boy are you got to have a great spring I said no kep was his name said ke we’re going to have a great team he no no no you’re not going to Spring this going to school this spring you’re going to go play golf and so I went over and played I played the masters of north south British AER Walker Cup matches and then came back to school and played my last two years and and you know as I played in college I was fortunate enough to won an ash laminer and won the uh almost won the US Open twice and uh uh uh one US Amer again second time well you know that’s that’s how that’s how you get to where you’re going don’t jump over the progression in other words you’re saying how do you win when you get to the tour well you got to beat everybody you’re getting to before you get there so you I never thought I was all that great a player until I made the Walker Cup team and I said hm I must be one of the 12 best amers to make the Walker Cup team and then I won the US Amer later that year and I was ranked number one I was 19 years old you’re 19 aren’t you and I said I said so said hm I must be better than I think I am but I didn’t put myself in front of that and I didn’t jump up to the next level I kept playing a college golf I played played played uh a lot of Amer tournaments played played play played a lot of Tour tournaments too but as an Amer and you know I let my progression work up to to grow into it I wasn’t ready at age 19 to go play the tour you know I might have made it eventually but because I played enough golf that that gave me a progression to get up there and grow I got there when I got there I was ready to play I want a whole $33.33 my first tournament I tied for 50th in La that was my first tournament then uh I can remember I one I won that I won $540 my second 440 in my 3D 256 my 4th 25 250 in my 5ifth and then I will finish second in Phoenix and W 20 2,300 or $2,333 I think it was for second place finish anyway but that’s you know that that was the question you asked me yeah I mean don’t get ahead of yourself you know you’ve had a great season and you know you may be ready you may want to play another three years of college I don’t know what you want to do uh but uh uh you know a little seasoning won’t hurt you right thank you neither way a college education incidentally yeah okay would there be anything you’d change in your pro career if you could go back and do it again um I don’t have any shots that I would uh go back people have asked me that question do anything that change you know what I did progression wise and so forth I was quite happy with what happened to me with that but I don’t have any shots that I but I have two shots at somebody else played one Travino and one Watson they both chipped in and cl holes it kept me from winning Majors on the 17th hole both of them but anyway they when trino chipped in at burkdale and in mirfield in 72 I would have held all four major championships at the same time but he chipped it on 17 and then I end up losing by one and then Watson chipped in at Pebble Beach that was 82 82 chip dead Pebble Beach where they were congratulating me on the 18th green for winning my fifth US Open and all of a sudden this big Roar went up at 17 and Watson is running across the GRE effort tripping it in so you know don’t get too ahead of yourself again but uh uh I was actually you know uh I always felt like every shot I played uh I took the respons ibility for it wasn’t anybody else’s fault it was my fault if I played a bad shot or whatever it did and also it was my fault when I played a good one so uh you know did I play Bad shots sure I played a lot of bad shots Everybody Plays a lot of bad shots but uh you know then you just sort of dust those right under the table and go play it and play your next ball you got to go chase it after anyway it’s your ball right and uh so I did don’t have any regrets of any place anything that happened very I was very fortunate that way so now I’m done in college so I’m going to turn pro in start of next year maybe these guys have some few years left in college but what’s your best advice for me to start my like pro career start you just start your pro career well I don’t know how they start Pro careers today but I know that they uh uh you know you’ll you’ll you’ll have to probably qualify someplace and uh the PGA Tour is a pretty Dar good place place to start they uh they do they do a pretty good job see the one thing here in the United States we were from Sweden here in the United States which I really we were very blessed that the PGA Tour has supported junior golf you know Amer golf college golf all the way through to where uh we we have we feel like we have a little bit of uh indebtedness to the two are for that and so when when when when you’re starting back out and wherever you start you know you have been you there’s many layers that have been supported before you get there so when you get get out to qualify to make it then you work your way up through it and and the and the progression they work up through today I think is pretty darn good I mean you’ll qualify for wherever you qualified if you qualify for the corn fairy tour or uh that’s probably where where you go you go first but they give a good easy progression of if you play well you get rewarded and you move on I mean you look at these guys that are here this week a lot of those guys have wasn’t very long ago they were playing that corn fairy tour so just be patient I have a lot of guys I I I always go back with a story with Roy mroy you guys will enjoy the story and he Roy was 19 years old he came to me and I was down at the Bears he was playing in the in the Honda Tournament down there and uh he said he said you know I say I can’t finish I’s 19 years old he said I can’t finish he said I hav one in a year he wanted to buy and he had one in a year and he said he I can’t seem to get I say I said Rory I said you’re 19 years old I said be patient be patient I says it’ll happen I said and I said remember when I was on tour one of the officials told me he said Jack he says be patient he says if you don’t one of these days you won’t shoot 37 the last time he’ll just shoot 33 and you’ll win the tournament and he says but that’ll happen so anyway about 3 weeks later Roy went on to uh play in Charlotte and shot 63 the last round won by about eight or nine shots and so I dropped him a note and I said you know I said I told you to be patient but this is ridiculous and uh anyway I got I got a kick out of that because that’s that’s what you do you’ve got to be patient and uh you you you qualify a certain place there’s some guys that haven’t qualified as high as they’d like to qualify but but if you’re a good player you work at it you’ll work your way up uh what we was the most important for you in your entire career the what what week was the most important for you in your entire career uh probably winning the US amateur when I was 19 years old I came to the last hole we had I was it was a I had a 36 hole match I was playing the defending Champion Charlie Co we were played at the Broadmore out in Colorado and we were all tied at the end of 35 holes and 36 hole we both played three wood off for he he hit on the back Fringe I hit it in about 8 ft short of the hole and he chipped it Bal R and just stopped on the edge of the hole I was quick to give him that putt believe me and uh I I made the eight-footer so I then all of a sudden now I realize that in a big situation and when was important I could make that putt because I knew because I did it so that carried me into the next event to when I got the next time I had an opportunity like that I knew said well you can you’ve done it before you know how to do it go do it so in other words you know it’s it’s it’s it’s getting the progression it’s get being patient it’s get being uh doing the things that uh uh you need to do to get you that next level just keep working and you look back at some of the things that you did maybe two or three years ago maybe May most important thing you’ve done in your life okay thank you uh Mr you obviously had a incredible career of playing um I’m curious what your proudest or maybe favorite moment would be kind of being on the outside maybe someone else playing what you would consider to be um one of your personal favorite moments uh well my first my my most personal famous moment is when I met her the young lady sitting right there met her my first week in college that you know that set the tone of my of my career I’m married I you know not not everybody gets gets a gets the right partner and I had somebody who Who Loved Me cared for me supported me and uh you know that was really important that so that that was a big thing to me and uh you know I don’t know that anything that was any more important than that to me and then of course obviously we we have five children I have 24 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren so we got I we got a few miles to feed at home but uh uh it’s all because of her and I think that uh I give her a lot of credit for what I’ve won because you know a golfer goes out on tour and uh you know it’s whether if you’re not married if you got your family that you get support or your caddy or who whoever whoever it might be uh that’s very important to you because you know I I I don’t I don’t mean this in a nasty way but I mean I remember before T when tiger was single and tiger uh they they said he got married and they said I said well how do you think that’ll affect Tiger’s career I said well I think it’ll only be a plus I said he’s got to get tired of coming home and telling Butch Harmon he says hey Butch I want another one you know he has somebody to share it with and you want to share your career and enjoy the fruits of your work okay we got you got any other questions you you guys have got got what you need somebody’s got a guy needs wants to get out and play golf too I I could see that on his face I’m happy to be no I know you’re anyway thank you all very much uh again Anil thank you Julie congratulations thank you and thank you all of you appreciate it and Dustin how many years this you and I up here 2007 just just just 17 years huh 18 18th 18th time he does a great job good D little thank you thank you all so much
