are the best players in the world it’s amazing how they seem to create Magic every week and I don’t think this year will be any exception to that excitement drama big names at every turn there’s 73 Majors that have been accumulated from Memorial Tournament winners I mean that’s an incredible number jack Nicholas’s prize tournament title the memorial where star power abounds very proud of the memorial tournament the way it’s been supported from Columbus Ohio and the whole golfing World we’re very happy with what’s going on and we’re looking forward to a great tournament again this [Music] year Golf Channel and the PGA Tour proudly present on the Range live the Memorial tournament presented by workday a mirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin Ohio just a little bit north west of downtown Columbus what a setting the course that Jack built on the land he used to explore as a young man now he dominates as a legend of the game and we are so glad to have you with us here on the Range inside our Studios there is Steve Scott Craig perks I’m Brian katrick is very special show here this is the seventh of eight Signature Events this year on the PGA tour and we have been doing on on the range for now the seventh time a little special something that we do spend a little extra time on Wednesday out there watching the best players in the world get ready for these Signature Events it’s been a whole lot of fun well worth the effort Craig you have been there you have played in this event what do you think of a trip to mirfield Village yeah it’s very demanding I think it’s a reputation is one of the most demanding golf courses on the PGA 2 you’ve got an illustrious list of winners including t has won five times Mr Nicholas has won twice Kenny Perry three times as all it’s so special to the players but I promise you this guys you better have every part of your game working because this is one of the demanding tests on tour and Steve you’re one of the great instructors in the game as well a great player in your own right we’re talking about players working on their games on Wednesday this is fun to watch this is fun we get an inside scoop on what all these players are doing we can get inside some of these trackman numbers that the players get to see and get to work on their games each and every time uh on the way out and on the way ready to play this tournament and uh it’s really cool to get inside uh all the the nuts and bolts it’s kind of like the the pit crew in NASCAR we get to really get uh the inside scoop on what these players are doing not all the cars are running well right off the truck we’re watching some of the tweaks and we’ll watch some of those as this afternoon goes on we mentioned the seventh signature event of the season the eth one coming up in about two weeks here are your winners so far all of them are here Chris Kirk in limited Century event at the very beginning of the season come from behind victory for Chris Kirk and then of course Windam Clark didn’t get to play all week at Pebble Beach but what a final round he had putting it together to post the victory there and of course ADI matama another final round charge out of the pack came out of nowhere to win at Rivier for the Genesis Invitational Scotty Sheffer with backto back signature event wins winning again at the Arnold Palmer Invitational getting the cool cardigan sweater and then he gets the jacket at the RBC Heritage what a run Scotty Sheffer was on at the time and is still in the middle of and then the last signature event Rory mroy in Charlotte North Carolina winning again at the Wells Fargo Championship this event now it is the 48th play here at mirfield Village all 73 players that were invited here this week it’s a seventh event 700 FedEx Cup points to the winner and a $2 million purse at stake there was a 74th player that was invited at the last minute and that was last week’s winner Robert McIntyre he is still enjoying the party and why not but he’s going to miss this how about this from Scotty Sheffer one of the reasons why you come here it would mean a lot to be able to shake his hand and win this golf tournament with all the history here and what Mr Nicholas has meant to the game Jack Nicholas will be waiting for the winner on Sunday afternoon it is a handshake unlike any other and speaking of world number one Scotty Sheffer we’ve got nine of the top 10 in the world here all 30 the top 30 in FedEx Cup points including this man who’s number one on both of those lists and there’s Scotty fine-tuning the game yeah I think what’s impressive to me is how vidious he is to his practice uh basically the Devotion to the same fundamentals he has a molded grip it’s actually not on this club it’s on his five onon but every time we’ll we’ll check the grip and then we’ll lift it up per perpendic we’re going to look at the club face and then going to put the club back down behind and go through the same fundamentals every single time then you go once he gets out on the golf course he’s the he’s a brilliant tactician he’s a great thinker he’s number one in 40 different statistical categories to play well at mirfield Village You better drive the golf ball well he’s number two you better hit your IRS well he’s be number one on greens and regulation the last three years and if you devote some time to looking F 150 to 175 75 to 200 200 to 225 you’re going to hit a lot of long lines here he’s certainly up in the top 20 so to me I I just think the Brilliance is how he goes about preparing for rounds and how accepting is he is and the Simplicity with which he plays certainly on the instruction side I mean when you see what his coach Randy Smith and he work on I mean it always seems to come back to the basics of golf right I mean we learned that at a young age grip aim stance and posture right I mean he’s working on the number one thing right here it’s the only connection you have to that club face are your hands the only part of your body that touched the club are your hands so you have to understand how they are on the club and if you want consistent results just like you were outlining the the 40 some odds number one rankings on all these statistical categories you have to prepare consistently and for him to be able to do this and time and time again just the Simplicity of it uh Simplicity is the answer to complexity in a lot of ways so I think that Scotty Sheffer has really shown that so he works through his routine but a start here this week is anything but routine Scotty told us earlier in the week how special it is at mirfield Village I mean this is a special place for me um you know I remember when I was in college I came here and played the I would play the US Open qualifier over at the other courses here I can’t remember what their name are right now but um yeah we would always come over and watch the practice round and you know we’d stay an extra day and watch a little bit and you know I always dreamed of coming here and playing in this tournament and um you know it’s a dream come true just to be here in the field and so you know I’m excited it would it would mean a lot to me to be able to shake his hand and and win this golf tournament you know with all the all the history here and what Mr Nicholas has been to the game and you know like I said it’s just uh it’s an honor to be in the field this week so Rory maroy was asked what impressed him himself most about Scotty Sheffer this was Rory’s quote Success is tedious Scotty Sheffer and his devotion same fundamentals in all arrange sessions there is a Temptation and we’ve seen that by multiple players to go look somewhere else for something better he said temptation is to make big changes quickly but that place is really sustainable adding one brick at a time and think of what you talked about Randy Smith for the 20 odd years but in what Scotty’s done the last 5 years since he’s been on T what he’s built without changing anything there’s a lesson to be learned there guys very much a lesson and and really what’s very interesting about the the trajectory of his career and how things have evolved each and every season I mean this was actually the latest he has ever won on tour this year at the RBC Heritage April 22nd was that Sunday and he has never won in May June July August he’s never won a PGA Tour event past April 22nd so it will be very interesting to see how if we can get a victory under his belt this time of year about the only thing that’s on his list of things to do still for Scotty sheffler because other than that he has been simply Sensational look at this season 12 starts four wins ran them all together 12 starts 11 top 10s and those four no one has ever won those events all of those events in their career in the history of the PGA Tour he did it in 44 days just continue to look in New Directions to tell you how good Scotty sheffler is and has been this could be his week and here’s another young man we’re still learning things about young ludvig oberg has now been in the professional game for a year we just got finished with the NCAA Championship which he played in last year he also received the Jack Nicholas award is The Division one men’s player of the year last year one year ago one year ago he was 95th in the world today he sits sixth what he has accomplished the ascent has been more rapid than anyone and it’s uh it’s impressive and it’s easy to see why Steve with a golf swing like this I mean it’s it’s kind of to me it’s a it’s a golf swing derived out of AI I know we’re kind of in that Universe right now and and but it it is a golf swing that is basically perfect I mean you watch his shot trails and they’re basically straighter than train smoke when there’s no wind I mean it’s just dead straight it’s uh it’s very remarkable the positions that he creates I mean they’re just fundamentally fundamentally perfect can we applaud him for the speed with which he plays as well and I think that uh there’s so there’s no clutter he stands up there and you right the text move uh the the move is Flawless it’s textbook there’s no question about it but uh uh his coach Texas Tech said he reminded him of a young man’s Adam Scott very goodlook high praise but the golf swing is one to emulate as well as Adams was a couple 20 years ago statuesque fundamentally perfect and he also has a wonderful attitude how many times have we seen him shake off something bad that might have ruined a player twice his age he just has a fantastic attitude he’s able to to brush his shoulders off right just to any bad shot he just able to just put it totally behind him I mean that that is the Hallmark of of a of a lifelong player player who we’re going to see for years and years and years out here and I think it’s similar to the way he drives ay golf ball 14th off the te but then some of those numbers are comparable to Scotty the the long iron the the the proximity numbers from all the way from 150 to 225 they’re all inside the top 20 on two so it bodess well to to play mirfield Village Golf Club Well yeah if there’s there’s one hole in his game it would be Strokes gained around the green he’s 114th on the PGA tour this season in that category Maybe it’s cuz he just spends so much time right out here on the practice team we just we all want to see him fire away but perfect balance and it’s not a golf swing that looks like it has a lot of violence to it where it’s going to have a lot of longevity I feel this type of golf swing as long as the knee holds up we a little issues with some knee but he’s not letting on that it’s bothering them at all the numbers and how quickly it’s all happen for ludvig oberg already a winner on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour and a Victorious Ridder Cup team appearance and he’s only been at it for a year first major championship start well you can only do one spot better and that was this year at the Masters could this be ludvig oberg’s week he’ll have to follow in some pretty good footsteps Patrick Klay a two-time winner here we’ll see him on the Range when we come back e for for high above mirfield Village Golf Club we welcome you back on the Range here from the Memorial tournament so glad to have you with us here in a a show we’re doing just for the Signature Events just started doing it this year having a blast looking in on some of the best players in the world tuning up their games the day before a signature event here a little fun game all right can you pick the player based on the footwork all right A B C D and E here’s the swings lot coming at us can we match him up Steve Scott can you pick one we’re going to need to see the downswing yeah D sheffler all right Craig perks to lock Craig in on Scotty sheffler with d Steve you got any guesses just go by the brand I who’s wearing run that one more time I we’ll give you another look at it s at C there’s Rory Rory’s the top left havland sand C yes there we go yes the footwork oh we should have known the old slide with Ry from some of the best players in the world bottom right Patrick can’t lay that footwork there it is here’s the rest of that move which I’m just assuming hit the Fairway yeah it’s uh it’s certainly worked throughout his career uh you think uh off the TT to Green he’s been exceptional well you’re his last win here the second of his two came in the playoff back in 2021 the hard charge Colin morawa Klay and morawa on the Rainy Sunday afternoon back and forth and you just had to know it would come down to a Miss after the good putting we had seen with that lots of handshakes from the fellow competitors and one important handshake with that man Jack Nicholas two wins now for Patrick Klay here in seven starts he has the best scoring average at mirfield Village of anyone in this field a shot and a half or so under par so keep your eye on Patrick Klay this week and here he is going through his workout here jent another one of these gentlemen that uh has stuck with the same instructor Jamie Mulligan has been alongside Patrick kentley for years ever since even before he got to UCLA and listen if you if you look at Patrick’s career from 55 weeks as a number one Amer in the world the best in college and then eight WIS out here he has been i’ saying the handful of best players at every level he’s played which is so admirable and what he went through with his back he lost about five years and obviously losing Chris Roth’s best friend but he’s a five- to player but I think there’s a lot going on away from the golf course for Patrick anlay there’s been some struggles he is stoic he’s meditative even Mr Nicholas when he shook his hand said can you smile and appreciate what you’re doing uh to me looks a little more Dow and I’m not trying to be disrespectful it’s just a lot it’s it’s a heavy time in golf and I think if you look at some of it stats he struggled from teer Green top 15 Last 5 Years 70th this year total Strokes gain total and we talked about a five tall player top 10 Last 5 Years 65th this year so there’s stuff going on but Jamie Mulligan was on the Range very attentive they go about their business when he’s at his best he is one of the best players out here I just don’t think he’s quite clicking right now golf is a funny game isn’t it and and you know there’s es and flows there’s there’s ups and downs to the the whole entire game right here and as you watch him get a little work in trying to figure out his numbers right here and but the the big stat that really jumps out for me with Patrick Klay is his Strokes gained approach he’s made a couple tweaks to his irons he’s had a couple change on some irons and so that leads to some inconsistencies with distance control and whatnot and he was 18th last year in that category 122nd this year in Strokes gained approach so a definite slowdown there and and the scoring average I mean if you look at his scoring average in the last few years I mean he was fifth in 21 he was sixth in 22 and he was sixth last year this year at 93rd almost two strokes worse on average per round that he was last year so definitely some things going on with his ability to score working on either a pitching wedge or a smooth nine iron here yeah I really think it starts you talked about with Scotty shefer it’s all about good fundamentals and and really what I like to see is the lines that he creates very sharp lines and as we take take the club away a lot of that does not change everything just works away in that triangle nice full extension the head is obviously not moving at all as it works from this position you see where the that he’s so centered right over here that just gives him that great Foundation now from there we’ll start to see a little movement with the lower high four but the head won’t move forward as we start down here be a little little tap there yep the lower half moves the head stays very still and then again look how centered we are right over the ball at impact um and then as he rotates all the way through again this angle and potentially just it really hard to tell any change but two to your point Steve Two Shots around is significant that’s eight shots in a vent that’s for some missing Cuts you know potentially but kentley’s too good you you can’t you can’t do that to Scotty Chef or Rory or these guys at the top of the game and that’s why I think uh there’s there’s distractions that I think are keeping him from being his best well we know what lots of those distractions are he’s trying to work through it a lot of his time away from the golf course spent trying to work through the problems in the game right now we wish him all the best we need him on that wall of course here are some of the notable pairings for tomorrow we’ll be playing in pairings straight T start in this signature event here Windam Clark with Patrick Klay just after 10:00 a.m. eastern time tomorrow Scotty Sheffer and lud oberg we saw them in the first segment of this show they’re playing together matama and morawa how about Brian Harmon and Jordan spe two of the best scramblers in the game and here’s Jordan over here on this side of the range working on things he’s with Cameron McCormack at his side I think that that’s uh you know definitely a consistent partnership right there Ste Steve I know sorry uh I know he’s in the W I’ve never seen Jordan spe Drive the ball better and I think if you look at his stats uh 13th off the te he was outside the top 130 2019 20 20 20 21 the the issue right now for Jordan spe is his iron game very poor 113th and approach 92nd in proximity uh which is really surprising how well he’s driven the golf ball uh he’s driving accurate we watched him we had him on featured group coverage we were focused on him at the Charles swab challenge at Colonial he could flight t- shots down he could turn them in both directions which you need at the the renovated Colonial and he he couldn’t get a wedge inside 40 ft it seemed um so and again listen we’re dealing with some injuries I know the wrist has bothered him recently last six starts best finish tied for 2 so he’s not at his best I think physically but man is he driving the golf ball well so if he to me seems like he’s might be playing around the wrist again when you have wrist issues playing golf and you’re hitting the club into the ground that can be rather painful and you you play away from stuff like that I I don’t want to speculate that that’s the reason why there’s been a significant drop off in the the iron game but you’d have to believe that has something to do with it yeah you certainly don’t want your hands or your wrists to have any issues I mean we we see it I mean these guys they take a beating they’re out here if you want to work on your game and hit you know the hundreds and thousands of balls that they hit every day every week uh it it definitely is your weakest length of your chain essentially are your hands and so uh when those are not performing to 100% strength you’re not going to be able to control that club phase to the point that you want and and you’re right I mean he had he’s got maybe some some wrist things going on he had that injury to his left hand a few years ago which kind of caused him to grip the club differently weaker in his left hand which leads to a whole lot of things in the in the body and how the body releases through the ball and how the left wrist is bowed or cued or however so we’re watching him do this drill here is going up the ladder we watched him go from 65 a couple at 75 up to 85 and then back to 75 honing it in right here where watching it and you have these launch monitors uh it’s so so advantageous for players these days you can hit a shot in your mind you can go okay I carried that whatever and you get immediate feedback and you can really dial those those wedges in feels like he’s coming back down the ladder here I’m thinking this next one’s going to be 65 yards okay that’s what I’m thinking he’s been kind of hanging out in that 75 yard range yeah see that’s back down the ladder oh I’m not sure what that was supposed to be I’m thinking that was supposed to be 65 yards Michael maybe he hit it in there was a little protection beyond the flag and hit it Beyond and back it back down the hill there you go see he’s doing that next one 55 yards okay you’re tuned in here Brian he may he may hit a couple he may go 75 here he may hit a couple at 65 I don’t know what that was not sure that ball was round I think he’s trying to hit the 65 yard range he spent a bunch of time there at 75 yards but this is where the work gets done and you’re getting to watch it yeah that’s the one he wanted there you go everybody’s got a different method that’s what Jordan spe is working on this afternoon you see the notable finishes here Victor hland was the winner Scotty shuffler was knocking on the door Jordan spe inside that top five Rickie Fowler was showing us a little bit of his Resurgence this time last year he would go on to win later in the summer we are back with more on the range from the Memorial tournament for it’s time now for going for the green presented by draftking sports book we say hello to golf bet lead will gray thanks Brian a ton of big names to look at this week at mirfield Village and we have to start at the top of the board at draftking Sportsbook it all starts with Scotty sheffler at plus 360 you have to make a purchasing decision on the reigning Masters champ listen last year he lost 20 Strokes on the greens to Denny McCarthy the ultimate playoff runner up and he only missed that playoff by one shot no one here would be surprised if Sheffer runs away with this thing but if you want to fade sheffler there’s going to be a lot of value especially on guys in that plus 4,000 to plus 6,000 range I’m zeroing in on another former champ Hideki Matsuyama won here 10 years ago one earlier this year at Rivier and quietly is up to seventh on tour this season in Strokes gain total it’s always a question of the putter with matam he’s 144th on the greens this season oo big red flag but he plays better and putts better at mirfield Village I think the ball striking is going to carry him and I wouldn’t be surprised to see hii back in the mix for a Second Memorial title come Sunday if you’re looking a little bit further down the board in that long shot sleeper range what about sep straa plus 6600 at draftking sports quick has won already on tour on another Nicholas course remember PJ National designed by the Golden Bear as well and the Austrian is playing really well right now he missed the cut at Valhalla the PGA Championship but outside of that five top 20 finishes in his last six starts and he has played well here before two top 20s in his last four starts it would not surprise me if much like Matsuyama straa is a guy who ball straight breaking Edge is going to increase this week and if he does his job on and around the greens he could be in the mix at a very juicy number then we look to potentially some head-to-head matchups Look at Full tournament and we need to look at these numbers do a little betting 101 Russell Henley and Max hom Max hom is sitting there at draft King Sports we at plus 4,000 Henley is behind him at plus 4500 but Russell Henley is favored significantly in their head-to-head matchup so what does that tell us that means if both of them get in the mix odds makers in the market think that Max hom has a better shot at winning this tournament but Russell Henley’s flooor is a little bit higher both guys have played pretty well here before ien at maxom and I think getting plus money on him at plus 115 is some really good value remember H has finished T6 or better here each of the last two years I think the market might be over reading his miscut at Colonial which really amounted to one bad round on Thursday he played pretty well on Friday and outside of that he’s been playing really well this spring and summer just look back to what he did at Augusta National so getting him at plus 115 against Henley a lot to like there and if you want to throw in one more maybe for Thursday how about the guy just over my shoulder here Tony feno under 71 a half for first round score five out of his seven first rounds at the memorial have been par or better he’s 22nd on tour in first round scoring I think big tone is starting to figure it out especially off the te expect him to be in red figures after Thursday will gray thank you very much great work out there at mirfield Village draftking Sportsbook is an official sports betting partner of the PGA Tour and this week new customers can deposit $5 and get a no sweat bet up to $1,500 in a bonus bet if your first wager loses download the app and use promo code range when you sign up draft King Sportsbook the crown is yours for mirfield Village Golf Club in the Memorial tournament it was a signature event before we had Signature Events we welcome you back here on the Range a little special show that we do just for the Signature Events here and we are glad to have you along with us as we watch some of the best players in the world on the Range and this is one of the first time winners Chris gup now you got a whole different attitude here as you stand on this range and work through your game you are a PGA Tour winner and what Freedom that provides for the mindset to just let yourself go and this is a type of player who really does like to to kind of Freewheel it a little bit he he’s got the third most Club head speed on the PJ tour let’s start there he’s just got some severe uh distance and and what really how he creates that number one you you got to have strong legs and you can see they wear shorts here in these practice rounds and uh on the Range prior to the event and you know the legs the for the long hitters they have very they’re very strong legs they get in the gym they do a lot of work from the ground up I mean that’s what the the trainers would call the king of the Swing it’s the legs and then the core is kind of the secondary part but the legs have to be strong because number one you have to walk 72 plus holes uh throughout the week tournament rounds practice rounds you’re on your feet a lot and so if your legs aren’t strong you can’t sustain the whole entire event and you can’t create the speed and then you know as we watch him swing you know he he creates a tremendous lag you know he’s going to have a couple conversation make sure he just takes a moment here but he’s going to find some speed in in the hands as well and also what he’s doing he KY is studying the yardage book obviously a rookie out here so going to play in this event for the first time they’re going to look at okay what am I he’s gone 192 199 2011 that was his carry number and you probably that’s a six or a five five on do we have par 3es that are going to play that number what shapes are we going to have to need if we going to you know you get to some of these really long par fours and uh this is the fifth longest course on the PGA to over 7500 so right now he’s not working on his golf swing I think Steve he’s working on preparing for the round and that’s happening tomorrow so I think a lot of these guys will try and replicate shots on the Range that they’re going to face tomorrow and I think that’s great to to see that from a a rookie and I think he played a lot of Lacrosse growing up so I think you get that the down coocking of the wrist and using your wrists for Speed plus the the tremendous amount of strength he has in was low half so I think that’s where the combination comes where he can generate all that speed yeah definitely more of a a handsy player than a what we saw Scotty Sheffer before hitting those wedges more arms and body oriented I mean there’s really three ingredients to create speed its body rotation its arm swing and its hand action or that lag that we we talk about as instructors as and and he’s got all three really working in unison and then you throw down the alignment stick he’s not changing targets if you look at the IRL on the right there he’s basically just using that alignment that’s his Al lion a he’s using that as uh a way for him to get power parallel to his Target and feel like the his body lines are matching up with the stick so that’s also helpful got her up in via the Aon next five excuse me the swing five winner in Myrtle Beach along with Davis Riley Ben Griffin Victor perz and Davis Thompson our Tracer technology is provided by trackman and he also go with all those you know ball speed and Club head speed and um distance he’s Al all in the top seven of those he’s also a great putter 35th in stropes gain putting uh got a good short game so he is the prototypical young PGA Tour player and you see a little fuss behind them there they are putting together the stage for the for the memorial honor ceremony later this afternoon Julie iner and Tom weof the honores see Chris gup on the list of firsttime winners this season winner of the Myrtle Beach Classic that was the same week that Rory was winning up the road in Charlotte and stepen joerger who was just a few feet away from having to stare down Scotty sheffler in a playoff at the Texas Children’s Houston open sheffler missed yay prevails and Steven is right there next to Chris he is on the list of firsttime winners and he’s going to hit it right over that golf cart skim it right over the lid there I I think it gives you validation that what you’re working on um is obviously you’re moving in the right direction get that first Victory um and I think more than anything it it gives also gives you the security of getting the exemption you know it’s a guy that’s won six times on the corn free tour Steven jger invested in himself you go back to an article after he won at Houston Mike Carol uh physical trainer he added for Speed Julia Julie Elion the mental coach he’s really worked diligently in the gym on the Range on the golf course there’s this huge commitment but also if you watched as he beat Sheffer in Houston you talk about free flowing and unencumbered he he’s just sending it with not a lot of thought I know we’re probably not going to see that more so with a a mid eye but once you get to the driver he’d waste very little time he doesn’t think much about it and it’s a beautiful way to play golf and he’s a guy that graduated continued to graduate off the corn Frey tour winning after winning and then could never keep his card and then all of a sudden he made that huge investment he went from you know Club head speed of 113 to nearly 120 mph ball speed of 170 nly to 180 mph and that’s the game on the PGA tour and it allowed him to win win I I think so you really do have to invest in yourself how about that checking the ball position there Steve and he just swats the alignment stick away fals yeah very important I mean it just yeah grip aim stance posture really goes back to those basic things and they’re just trying to dial it in from day to day from week to week and make sure that they’re doing the same thing and and these players they don’t most of them don’t do lots of different thing every week they they kind of have their happy place on the Range and this is this is their office this is where they going to check the boxes each and every week before they’re ready to go and and they they get their basic fundamentals all set up but I mean you talk about the distance I mean he’s picked up 16 yards off the te in the last two years on the pj2 I mean that’s that’s a club and a half couple clubs different H into every green and that is that is the Difference Maker I also think that ball position it runs all the way through it gets too far forward can throw off the low Point get too far back your body has to stall out so I think a lot of players devote time on making sure their ball position is the in the correct spot and those ball positions change from player to player some may like it Forward some may like it more centered but whatever works for you you have to make sure that you continue to give its full attention I just like the dismay with which he smacked that little yellow line and stick away so meticulous about how he put it down and then when he was done with it he was done with it step joerger putting it together on a Wednesday afternoon the final fine tunings not sure he liked that one but they’re talking about numbers here’s another guy who is a winner this season it wasn’t his first win but it was his first Standalone win AE batia the week before the Masters he wins in a playoff and OA batia is now in Signature Events how about this left-hander I mean he was the youngest United States Walker Cup team member back in 2017 and I mean just always been a great player for went college for the professional ranks right off the bat and said you know this is where I’m going to learn my lessons out here maybe as opposed to a a classroom or Collegiate Golf and and that’s fine each each and every one to their own and it certainly led him down a great path now a two-time PGA Tour winner there’s his instructor Chase Duncan out of North Carolina really loves Chase really has a a lot of players in his stable and they like to hit Fades he really he teaches them to kind of really rotate the body out of the way I mean if you want to hit a fade your body has to clear obviously batia is you know pretty thin build so he’s able to to unwind that that you know 30 in maybe less a waist out of the way very well and let’s let’s kind of illustrate that right here and I want you just to just to keep an eye on what his waist does what his hips do what his belt does in in the rotation because I mean he he’s just have a lot of god-given talents to rotate and unwind I mean the the rotary component of the golf swing is so important so let’s take this up to the top and I want you just to really focus on his on his core right in here and how that I mean you can see the belt buckle right now that that’s that’s a great sign the hips are really turned and what you can also see you can also see some separation in the knees that’s also a good sign if you’re videoing your golf swing on the Range and you want to learn something from these players right here if you want to rotate your hips more you’re going to see some space in there between the legs now let’s take this to the point of impact and I want you to look at his belt watch how fast his belt unwind and when he is at the golf ball I mean his belt is facing right at the Target I mean he’s going right this way and his belt is pointing that way you have to have tremendous flexibility to do that I’m not sure a lot of us standing here can do that or you watching at home can do that Steve look how Square his shoulders are so that separation between how wide the hips are open and how squar the shoulders are that’s how you generate all the speed and power right there yeah yeah you see that shoulders go there and that’s I mean that’s tremendous torque it’s tremendous god-given ability to do that but if you want distance you need that component in your swing and you can do that you know in the gym a little bit but you know there’s there’s some uh there’s some gifts from above to be able to do that as well and 22 years old right Brian you and I can’t do that so I think if we if we want to add a little bit more turn I think we’re going to turn our hips a little bit more on the back swing we might not quite see the separation in the left knee to the right as we’re right-handers but yeah um tremendous flexibility sort of seny in a way and I think that’s where he does generate a lot of speed the only time I can get my belt buckled a pointed the ball is when I hit a shank or else h a dress very good point should be able to achieve that not sure that we do AE batia at the advantage of Youth and a whole lot of skill now a multiple PGA Tour winner in this signature event this week at the Memorial tournament here’s how you can consume the event starting tomorrow morning 7:30 a.m. on PGA Tour live we’ll be right back here and at it and then of course later this afterno or later the afternoon right here on Golf Channel 2: p.m. eastern Time full playby playay coverage of the opening round of the Memorial tournament sah theala siging some autographs we’ll see him on the Range when we come back for e back with you here on the Range the Memorial tournament we have seen some signature moments in these Signature Events how about 2012 tiger long and right just finished here at 16 you can’t do anything from there well maybe you can he could have left that at his feet got a little frisky sent it in the water over the green tiger moment for [Applause] sure electrifying this Gallery these great Ohio golf fans Tiger Woods doing it again would go on to win that was his fifth Victory here and that is the most all time how about three in a row from 9099 all the way to 2001 and then a couple more after that Kenny Perry with three wins Nicholas the tournament host himself he didn’t win the first one Roger Maltby did but Mr Nicholas won the second one and has been shaking hands here ever since Tony fenal was just signing autographs there a lot of folks getting ahead of the curve there I like that he may be this year’s Memorial Tournament winner he is now gotten over here onto the range got his got his Air Jordans on when we’re working on the driver as athletic as anyone out here and he actually said that it had some lingering issues over the last couple of years that prohibited him from working on speed training but spent some time with the Utah Jazz and he talked about he got it uh did a lot of workouts with the NBA team and they focused on the legs the glutes and you talked about them being the king 23rd in distance this year was 6 six last year so certainly the good health worked long levers man just long arms talk about seni and you know Boyd samah is again another guy that’s had a coach pretty much for his entire PGA T career they he they can go back home and get ball speeds over 200 mph he he’s a freaking nature he doesn’t ever utilize that to his Advantage his his ball speeds are you know probably in the low 180s but he could I believe in my opinion if he wanted to uh he could be as long as anyone out here when you know and he just chooses not to his accuracy numbers aren’t great uh you know you look at he’s six in clubhead speed but 123rd in accuracy um wonderful iron player I just I I just think he has the right temperament to play the game of golf you know they continue to refine the skills here in um Boyd suah it’s an unusual setup with you see that much forward press you’d like to see the the left arm uh as a as a line of compression and you don’t see a lot of guys with that much [Music] angle again I think if you if you looked at the arms you love to see them hanging down the spine angle works here that and if you look at where this club most guys let me do that again those guys you’d like to have it maybe a little above the belt a little high there but we’ll just leave that line there for the plane line and as he works away I think it’s all based on how long his arms are the club just effortless takeaway just really works up that plane as it starts to shift up she gets if we stop it right there this is obviously very vertical we would love to see that line still matching the other one so there’s a little bit of a shift there on the way to the top and that’s why inhibit he never really gets to the um the club all the way to parallel but returns it to a magnificent spot and we could we could really draw the line at address to the line at impact and they would match up beautifully if we go back to btia look at the hips fine open and the the shoulders nice and square that’s where you’re gaining some speed and look at contact ball coming right out of the center of the face um again from this angle we like to admire the plane line if you go face on you’ll see a little bit of the uni uniqueness of how far as handle is at a dress uh ahead of the club head and whatever you feel comfortable doing as long as you can return it to where it needs to be at impact I’ve always found it interesting I mean with a player that has this much Club head speed he doesn’t wear metal spikes uh which is very interesting now these these shoes these aren’t your off the rack kind of Jordan shoes they actually have a more aggressive bottom on them which which help him a little bit but but still I think the players on the PGA tour can wear metal spikes and I always thought that was very interesting uh given his amount of speed from above above the waist there but it it’s it’s kind of like I mean you talk about the his ability to create that speed and and he leaves a lot in the tank right I mean it’s kind of like he has a Ferrari but he’s driving it in third gear all the time maybe second gear second gear maybe right so uh but but his game is is more about control and wouldn’t we all love to be able to control the the ball in the low to mid 180s ball speed wouldn’t we a very underrated iron player you know we think of sheffler and the like um we are amazed moraca and so on so forth but but you know Fifth and approach he’ been top 10 in R greens and regulation the last couple of years so maybe it feels like uh the strength is in the iron game let’s just see if we can get that ball in the Fairway first ball speed over 180 M hour now we’ll look elsewhere on the Range there’s the stage they’re going to have up there and on the other side of the stage see saw H tagala over there he was signing some autographs and there’s them building the stage right in the middle of the range and I love that while construction goes on they’re doing their work these guys are doing their work everything business as usual here on the Range you know these players I mean they they judge where they’re set up on the range with the wind the wind direction is kind of this way uh it’s into the players from the left and so what they like to do as much as possible is get they like to hit more shots into the wind I think for a right-hander the left to right Crosswinds are most problematic they cause you to either pull the ball a lot or have excessive uh rotation with the hands and the forearm so you’re going to see a guy like theala going to hit a little bit more into the wind sometimes you you don’t have the perfect scenario where the all the range is blocked up so you try to get as far into a spot that you’ll feel as comfortable as you can and maybe you fire it more to the left portion of the range as we see theala right now but that’s that’s an important part of their practice uh there there are often times if the wind is too drastic from left to right the players won’t even hit balls on a day like that they’ll maybe go to the the if they don’t have the luxury of going to the opposite side of the range for example they’ll just go practice their short game on a day like that maybe a little bit more but it’s very interesting of how they navigate where they set up as well common theme Here Rick Hunter is been with theala since uh seah was 10 years old so near 15 years and I there’s a lot to admire about this young kids game you know currently 13th in the world and just the the passion with which he plays loves to shape the ball it was sort of mythical when he was at pepine he would stand up on the Range warming up intentionally hit Shanks and everyone would go run to the coach and say I I don’t think the Galla is going to play and go out and shoot 65 but I just it the the smile is contagious the way he plays is that way and very creative loves to see the ball curved so to your point Steve you start to see the ball the wind out of the left you’re going to see more draws if the wind was out of the right you’d probably see him cutting the ball and that’s just a wonderful way to play golf uh the ability to to shape shots tiger does it did it so well Scotty Sheffer does it so well as just shape shots towards Flags you’re not taking risk on when flag sticks are tucked all right so saah hit the Gallo working through it had to clean off his launch monitor I like that take care of his toys we just saw Tony phenow hitting some shots right now he’s standing by with Mark cavale Tony getting a little work out on the Range on this Wednesday going to play nine holes this afternoon uh what have you been working on saw you work on the driver a little bit anything particular not really just uh grooving the fields that I’ve had over the last couple weeks you know I’ve been hitting nice so just kind of grooving the fields that I’ve had I I played n already this morning so my work is almost done for the day that’s good obviously you got some work this afternoon but big big week here at the Memorial tournament what is theor Memorial Tournament mean to you yeah I think it’s one of the biggest tournaments we play um it means a lot Jack does a great job of taking care of the players I think it really sets a precedent for how tournament should be R everything this week is top- Notch world class so uh it’s always a privilege just to be in the field and um that’s definitely the case this week on top of it got a pretty good pretty tough Golf Course out there what’s the key for you uh playing here at mirfield yeah I think the key for everybody is to keep the ball in the Fairway you’re only going to be able to score from the Fairway you know the rough uh after playing the last couple days the rough is stick um you’re not going to be able to hold the greens the greens are firm you know no matter how much rain we get this uh this afternoon the the golf course is going to be firm by this weekend so you’re going to have to hit Fairways and uh if I’m able to do that then you know hope roll some putts and and have a chance to win Tony as always thanks for your time play well this week thanks thanks Mark I wonder who he’s a fan of Tony fenal grooving the fields on the Range e for it’s time now for Fantasy 4 presented by DraftKings our expert panel putting their money where their mouth is here’s how you do it six players locked by the first T time you’ve got $50,000 worth of a salary cap and this is how we’re going to score per whole finish streaks bonuses it’s all there it’s all provided by Draft Kings here are notable players this week Sheffer is going to be notable till further notice Rory mroy our defending Champion Victor havin is on the list ludvig oberg there lots of good ones to pick from it’s what they will cost you as we welcome you inside our studios here and our panel is ready to go Craig Steve here we go let’s start at the top let’s let’s spend some money general manager Craig perks who do you like I’d devote all my money to Scotty Sheffer and that’s actually where I’m going to start Scotty Sheffer 12,500 for week we know that mfield Village is one of the tour’s most demanding tracks and I I think from a historical standpoint over the last 3 or 4 years he’s an elite ball Striker maybe the best we’ve seen on the pj2 in a long long time leads in Greens in regulation the best driver of the golf ball you absolutely need that around mirfield Village so I’m absolutely going to go with Scotty Sheffer all right Steve he’s he’s gone with that guy who you countering with well Craig’s taking a lot of the money out of his pool for this week out of his 50,000 I’m going to go down just a drop here down to Victor hland at $10,200 and really it’s kind of crazy depending on how you look at it I mean he played not so great early on this year a top five finish at the PGA Championship really bolstered his spirits changing his golf coach back to Joe Mayo really key in the rise of his success right now and so Victor hin right now I think he’s a good good player for your top end player all right so you guys have just spent a lot of money we got to make six picks you’re going to need to go down the list who is going to be the 199th pick like Tom Brady was who do you got Craig bargain bargain Davis Riley at $6,400 coming off that victory at the Charles Schwab challenge it’s in the water right now a lot of guys changing coaches he’s gone back to his former coach Jeff Smith have certainly improved the golf swing they’re doing some neuro hacks there’s a lot of turbulence in the mind out on the golf course and he is controlling that beautifully so I think he’s a an absolute bargain at 6,400 coming into the memorial tourament with a lot of confidence yeah that car that he won he drove it right there from Fort Worth to Dublin and that cost more than 6,400 that’s a good value Steve what do you got well my Value Guide this week ran really is the $6,900 version right there AE batia and really uh that victory that he had at the Valero Texas open I mean it’s pretty crazy that he is such a value pick this week being 27th in the FedEx Cup 37 sth ranked player in the world and that putter right there that long putter has really bolstered his spirits on the greens and with the help of sport psychologist Julie ilon he is really di dominating his game right now and he’s a great value pick this week he’d be definitely one to put on your radar also cheaper than that Corvette I like it you guys have done it you have not steered Us in the wrong direction so those are the expert picks make sure you make your own DraftKings sports book is an official daily fantasy Sports partner of the PGA Tour and this week new customers can play for free for your share of millions in prizes with your first deposit download the DFS app and use promo code range when you sign up DraftKings the crown is yours e back with you on the range from the Memorial tournament mfield Village Golf Club just a little Northwest of Columbus OH Ohio and the stars are out here for this seventh signature event of the Season pton Manning playing this morning Chris Pratt was playing Anthony Gonzalez the former Ohio State standout all playing with Rory mroy that’s a pretty good Wednesday morning awful nice pton Manning loves golf Rory’s dwarfed by those guys but I’m pretty sure they all would love to drive the golf ball like Rory be yeah no question who hit the ball the farthest in that group it was the little guy yes who’s not really all that little those are just big guys not yes indeed McKenzie Hughes has found his way out to the driving range here huge year for Canadians as the president’s cups heading up to Royal Montreal and I had a little chat with International Captain Mike wheel last week up there and Mike thought five Canadians potentially could get on that team McKenzie had had a great chance last week uh to get that Victory ended up finishing seventh but right now there are five Canadians in the top 16 in the points you think with uh Nick Taylor and Cory Connor inside the top eight you think they’ve pretty well solidified but Adam hadwin Taylor pendrith coming off the victory and then McKenzie Hughes so I can’t wait to get up there man that do not Overlook the Internationals with the the squad they’re going to assemble Under The Shield Ernie El’s created Ernie’s going to be an assistant Captain Trevor’s going to go back up there Ogie camoo they’re all in they’re all in and uh what an atmosphere it’s going to be up north of the Border talk to Brendan D young about this if you’ve got a Canadian at 12 and a South African at 13 what is it worth is it or or vice versa and he felt like it was it was maybe a couple of shots per match the home crowd for the Canadians well remember Trevor took Christian Baden out to on to make that team as a pick to go to qu Hollow I think Mike we in this put in the same situation you think would have to potentially fill that spot with a Canadian certainly got to be worth something all we got a little track Man issue here we’re we’re re-calibrating I guess I guess Steve every once in a while you got to recalibrate you know what I would do turn it off turn it back on yeah turn it off turn it back on that is uh that’s definitely something to do and and what these players will will do and they can they can get the you know the trackman in a you know an actual distance a normalized distance for different temperatures and different weather conditions so they can they can kind of dial things in no matter what the the conditions are I think that’s the the beauty of all the technology that they get to use out there is they can really just kind of hone it in a lot of these players will actually they’ll they’ll they’ll receive programs from the trackman team uh very similar to the golf course they’re about to play with different whole locations and whatnot and they can essentially practice the golf course they’re going to play on the range right now that’s that’s really cool you see a gentleman by the name of Harrison shei out there from trackman there with the glasses on top of his hat and he’s he helps all of these all these guys week in week out it’s a great Point Steve because you you create your foundation of numbers and you you pretty much do that with your instructor at home or somewhere off site then you can bring those numbers to mfield Village Golf Club and take them out on the golf course this afternoon when it’s hot and humid maybe take him out on other golf courses when it’s less humid and more windy and actually see how the ball is traveling then you can correlate all those numbers and you step on the first in you know pretty much know exactly how far every single Club in your back it’s a huge advantage to the way the game used to be played and another neat thing about the technology is that they can actually because of the the trackman system they can actually just use the the numbers they can find them on the golf course uh while they play as well sometimes you can bring the machine out there there’s many times they have the track mans right there on the back of the the TB box obviously we we get all that information through our shotlink data during the tournament week but they can get all that information and then as they go they can learn in their practice rounds what they’re doing as well well we got a full meeting going on out there with McKenzie Hugh the numbers aren’t quite tough he may lose a lap here but he didn’t lose any laps these weeks best finishes here top 10 there in 2020 just inside the top 40 a couple years ago only under par the one time here at mirfield Village it’s a tough Golf Course averaging almost a stroke overp par at his six starts let’s move down the range we don’t have any Electronics here for Matt Fitzpatrick he’s got something else out there they playing soccer what’s going on over here maybe the hurdles the Olympics this Olympic year is he’s working on his no no what what he’s doing really it’s uh as his body watch it bumps it with his left shin and really I I think that what that’s doing it you when you rotate your hips more and he he you know gets that left heel up that left leg is going to move a little bit just a little towards the target just wants to bump that and it’s kind of a just a good kinesthetic sort of feel when he’s practicing out there yeah and you the feel is the most important thing is to what create you know what you want to do from a mechanical standpoint and how your body wants to react but you’ve still got to equate that to a Fe it’s it’s interesting I would never like to see my shin go forward so maybe I don’t know exactly what he’s working on but you’re you described it perfectly to me if I look at that and I go maybe he was drifting a little bit back and the the shin was shifting to the right and I if I want my hips to turn correctly then to your point Steve as we watch this we’re trying to get that Shin moving forward instead of drifting back towards a trail leg well the the the training AIDs that they use out there there there’s really three ways you can do it there’s there’s auditory training AIDS you can use there’s visual training AIDs that you can do and there are kinesthetic training AIDS and and this is that kinesthetic sort of feel where you don’t there’s not a lot of thought I think those are the best training AIDs that are used on the practice te the ones that that don’t require tons of thought it’s either I feel it or I don’t and when I feel it I’m doing the right thing and and that’s as simple as it needs to be willing to go down any rabbit whole possible member Pete cow said you should work on chipping cross-handed because you’ll get the club to deliver the low Point correctly so he did that for a couple of months and it delivered the low to the low point so perfectly so consistently he put it in play so I’m if it works I’m going to try anything he’s grooving the fields exactly seems like a common theme Brian should be I can’t wait for that song to get written all smiles from Matt Fitzpatrick and we will check back in with Mark carnavale we’re here on the range with McKenzie Hughes McKenzie nice work on the Range but first off congratulations on last week I know that was a it was a really good effort on your part to try to go backto back Canadians winning the RBC Canadian open how much pressure were you feeling being not only that but your local there to Hamilton yeah I think you know Nick obviously took a little bit of the pressure off Canadians winning last year but um I think me trying to win close to home uh I definitely felt that uh that pressure and that that that buildup uh and I think I did a pretty good job handling it but uh kind of ran out of steam there towards the end and uh didn’t get it done but yeah it was uh one of the most fun weeks I’ve ever had on tour uh I can’t remember ever feeling like that on the golf course before so uh having that support and all that noise behind me was uh really cool well last week at Hamilton probably prefar you a little bit for this week similar type of golf course saw you working on the Range there what exactly you working on with the track man what were you trying to to work on number-wise so I’m working on a few things in my swing and I just like use using the track man to kind of confirm some of the numbers um for me I like to get the path a bit more working left so I can hit a cut um so I don’t want to see the path going too far to the right and so the felds of my swing I’m working on are trying to promote that a little bit trying to get that path bit more left and so trackman helps me kind of confirm those numbers and and then uh you know kind of after that I kind of work into some some random kind of practice where you know my C gives me some random targets different clubs and I kind of work around and I have to realign and readjust for different shots which is what what what you’re going to do on the golf course I thought that was very interesting I actually kind of wish I had done it when I was playing cuz that makes a lot of sense how do you feel like that helps you as you prepare to go onto the golf course well I mean as you know golf is so Random right you you go out there on the first hole and you hit a driver and then you know you might hit a seven iron eight iron but it’s always a different shot right and on the Range it’s so easy to get caught up and hitting you know 37 irons in a row and think oh man I’m hitting it great I’m flushing it but you never play golf like that you know you always move around and different different targets different shots so I just feel like that helps you get into the mode of talking through different scenarios okay where’s the pin where am I going to aim this so it makes you kind of think through the shot like you would on the golf course I thought that’s pretty did you come up with that idea did your coach or how did you how did you come up with that I’ve had a few great coach over the years uh that have kind of helped me practice efficiently and I think that’s one of the things I’ve taken away is that you know there there’s a time for block and then there’s a time also you need to do some random and some different practice so it kind of keeps you on your toes and keeps you kind of thinking and working through the shots so that’s uh a credit to my coaches uh that you know helped me do that well from my perspective everything looked pretty good thanks through time as always uh have a good week all right thanks Carney right there good stuff from Mackenzie Hughes great stuff from the fans snacking on the Range for for just a couple of years ago here at the Memorial tournament it was Billy horel completing a nice little Resurgence in his career Eagle putt at the par five 15th flag stick in just gorgeous Marshall in complete Command he takes a big lead with him to 18 and just a par tap in here to win by four shots over Aaron Wise and the rest of this star studed field a FedEx Cup champion becomes a memorial winner the family on hand to see it there’s lots of ice cream around and of course Mr Nicholas there as well what a moment for the horel did you win yes I [Music] did that was fantastic your last five winners here at this Memorial Tournament presented by workday havin can’t lay twice ROM almost twice and you look at the disparity of winning scores also there have been some times when we have seen this course play firm and fast winners in single single digits two of the last five years and speaking of Billy horel there he is on the Range yeah we uh I had a good conversation um with Billy at the at punana I was out with him the first day and you know he he’s worked so diligently with Todd Anderson and you know they went back to some old footage and that didn’t work so what he’s trying to do right here here is he’s trying to get width in that right arm and he feels like when he stays on his left side near on top of it he creates that width when he gets too right too early which would be drifting or whatever it get behind it then he loses that width so he really feels like the the golf swing he’s actually trying to Steve it’s a great feel to have he’s trying to make get that width with the left arm so nice and wide the hands away from your head on the downswing get the club out in front of your body feels like he’s hitting a cut swing but still hitting drawers and man did he hit beautifully in that closing round of 63 at Pana well I think when you have width like that you you tend to you tend to rotate better if you’re if you don’t have that width if the hands are let’s say closer to your right ear at the top of the back swing then you you tend to use your hands a little bit more number one to try to create speed because you’re not really generating it from your arm swing and and then in in that respect you can curve the ball more when you use your hands more so the the width kind of sets up so many things it’s it’s pretty amazing kind how when you take the right medicine it solves several ALS that you might have and that width is is definitely the the good Elixir for him Billy will play with will alatus tomorrow Tums off the first tea you saw his tea time this group 10:40 a.m. eastern time at the Memorial tournament all right a whole lot of fun watching those guys out there Craig I think we can learn a lot watching these guys on the Range feeling the grooves man that’s all we’re trying to do that’s what these guys are trying to do on a on a Wednesday and it’s it’s fascinating to watch what you think the launch monitor the trackman device they’re really dialing their their games in and they are kindy of GrooVe those feels but it’s so important around this golf course this is a tactician’s Wonderland right here you’ve got to get the ball in the fair you got to you cannot miss the green above the hole these are some of the smallest Greens on the pj2 it’s a 7500 yard Golf Course again have all things sharp and that’s why I think we’ve seen the illustrious list of Champions here at mfield Village and there’s a legend waiting for the winner Steve that’s right yeah there is that list but but you think of this golf course and the speed of these greens I mean they play these greens they’re less than a tenth of an inch we get all the statistics every week and the the turf conditions are Immaculate here and the the ability to to adjust from the conditions from week to week and you can’t shorts side yourself for sure around here with the green speeds you have to make sure you’re negotiating the golf course properly you’re leaving the ball where on a green where if you miss the green you have plenty of green to work with so these players know how to do it and the players like a Patrick Cay who’s won here twice they can get it done 73 players in this field there will be a cut we’ll cut to the low 50 and ties we’re also going to use the 10 shot rule which is also fun we don’t see the 10 shot rule hardly ever anymore but we will see that in the player hosted Signature Events this is the third of those with tiger and Arnold Palmer the other two those finish those events are finished so we will see that this week it’s all about Jack Nicholas and mfield Village and the memorial and the best players in the game this has been a whole lot of fun don’t miss it we’ll be back with you starting early tomorrow morning on PGA Tour live and then tomorrow afternoon right on Golf Channel 2 p.m. eastern time for our entire hardworking crew Craig Steve I’m Brian have a great afternoon everyone e
