back on HQ post round where a son’s success is a father’s Pride both right before your eyes Sunday in Hamilton with Dad on the bag Robert McIntyre collecting his first career PGA Tour victory at the RBC Canadian open and for more we head into 18 Tower we say hello to our friend and yours the great Jim N joining us with a final thought here from Hamilton Jim it’s always great to see you and it’s always great to see what we just beheld on this Sunday this wasn’t the puffed chest no doubt about it Victory but time and again those nerves able to settle and Robert McIntyre able to answer how was he able to do that well he certainly got challenged in the end Joe great to be with you I mean this was a very touching scene when it was all said and done with his father doie catting for him the man who introduced him to the game who taught him the sport and yeah it it got U pretty tense at the end and McIntyre had to had the hole a really keep put from about 4 and A2 ft for par at the 17th hole otherwise he’d be into the 18th tie with Ben Griffin and then after grin Griffin hit a approach shot into 18 that looked like it would be good enough for a four from just off the green you know McIntyre had to answer with an iron shot of his own and he end in there pretty close and secures that win uh just a great event here beautiful scenes certainly ensued and you allude to it there I mean the man who firstand him a club was handing him the clubs this week for his first career PGA Tour Victory it’s a beautiful scene and I’m interested in your point of view as a father yourself how you really took stock of that relationship throughout the week I know how my father and I are on the golf course it was not what we saw here on Sunday on Sunday well I wrote a book about my father he’s been gone now for unfortunately for uh quite a while for 16 years and I called it always by my side and that was the last thing I said on the air today I was just thinking about what a special moment that Robert or Bobby as he’s known out here delivered to his father and I said he won it with his father Always by his side and uh it’s just it was just so rich I mean you don’t see that very often you saw when Jack Nicholas won the 86 Masters he had his son catting for him it was the father that was the player the son that was the caddy with Jack and Jack II but this was special his dad doesn’t do this his dad had last done this 7 years ago in a European tour second stage uh qualifying event um but this was the first time that he’d ever been on the bag in a really important tournament and a national open on top of that his dad is a greens keeper back home in Scotland had a an 18-hole course um that that’s just 4,400 yards par 62 he’s up every day early mowing the greens keeping the place in shape uh his son learned the game there he taught him the game the family lives lives right off the 12 hole and that’s a dream when you have a prodigy like Robert McIntyre it’s a dream that you know everyone has her fingerprints on it his mom Carol was back home watching from Scotland uh is just a really super story that’s the thing about the PGA t or Joe it just keeps giving us beautiful scripts and this is one of the better ones that’s been told in a long time and a beautiful one at that a beautiful nod to yours as these moments obviously make us all think of those relationships that we are lucky to have with our fathers Jim before I let you go here this RBC Canadian open it is delivered time and again a true identity as an event what have you come to expect from this event year in and year out well it were just compelling finishes we had last year the Nick Taylor moment from 72 feet in the playoff to beat Tommy Fleetwood but more importantly it just broke it open for the first time in almost 70 years a Canadian won their National open and I think it was the event of the year in golf and now you have this one this is going to be one of the best stories in golf it’s going to be right up there again there’s tremendous support here uh Hamilton is a gorgeous site uh they had last been here five years ago and uh serving as the as the host site for just the seventh time in well over a hundred years of this tournament’s history and I just love the way that the nation is behind the game it’s a big golf Nation it’s a short season but they come out they come out and they cheer and uh their voices are heard and uh they they’ve delivered another great tournament and they have a wonderful Champion wonderful words from the great Jim N we are always appreciative to have here on HQ another big one coming next week on CBS Jim we look forward to it yeah it’s going to be a big one next week Joe we’ve got everybody there including Scotty shuffler coming back um after sitting out for a week and staying home with his new baby and then you got Xander shafley with his first appearance since winning the PGA Rory maroy is there at the signature event so more great stories to come Joe we’ll look forward to talking to you about it next week couldn’t say it better myself the great Jim Nance obviously our North Star that we all look to in these moments of both celebration and heartache but as he said this PGA Tour time and again it continues to deliver as does our JY Nance taking a look here at Scottish winners on the PGA tour this game rooted in what these scotsmen have come to offer us and finally another one here for that flag Robert McIntyre the first since 2020 and just the third in the last 24 years he’s the fifth player from Scotland to win on the PGA tour since 1940 Bobby Mack bringing a trophy back to Scotland CBS Sports golf analyst Rick gimon in with reaction Rick you can’t help but be emotional about those moments but emotion underlining everything we saw over the last 5 hours this was queasy at times for Robert McIntyre how did he emerge here on Sunday yeah Joe I mean it was a four shot lead as you mentioned going into the final round and it was no Victory lap it was not a coronation it was bogey right out of the gate there were a few moments where he was Robert McIntyre that is displeased with how close the the Drone was to him he had great hearing on Sunday but he did what he needed to do and I was impressed with the way that he hit his second shots uh in this final round because that’s the one thing that he had struggled with over the course of the week it was the big question I had for him over this final 18 and what did he do he was top 10 in the field in Strokes gained approach including standing in the 18th Fairway and sticking one to 10 or 11 ft to give himself two putts to win his first PGA TOUR Championship so he answered those questions in a big way it wasn’t the the prettiest Victory Joe but they all count just the same I heard you guys talking a bit on the podcast about it a night ago first cut podcast obviously download And subscribe today Rick when you look at the Ascension to this moment none of it was I believe Kyle P Porter put it yesterday the wonderkind ascenstion to this first Victory Robert McIntyre has worked for every single stroke that has led him to this moment how does he find himself here at this age yeah it’s interesting right I mean there’s a lot of different ways to get to uh the PGA Tour and to get to Victory on the PGA tour and and Robert McIntyre is not a guy with just immense talent and was and was born and bred to play golf he’s had to work through every aspect at every single level and he’s done that on the DP World Tour he has a couple wins over there he was a member of the Ryder Cup team which goes a long way in in in making you feel like you can play and compete at the highest levels and now gets that first PGA Tour Victory he is usually very sound with the short game that’s his Pathway to the top of the board so as we continue to track uh the path and the trajectory of Robert McIntyre moving forward that’s the one thing to keep an eye on will he continue to be a short game specialist will he improve will he uh improve that long game and kind of take things to a whole different level you can see the emotion on his face this this could be a uh a jumping off point for him and it’s seen shared here by Father and Son hard to overstate the emotion of what that all entails but when you got Pops on the bag and now with a microphone under his nose on our CBS broadcast that certainly adds a layer to it all how do you think that maybe served him here over these four days yeah well Robert told us a couple of days ago you know having his dad on his bag it was it was really just a way for him to to refocus it was a way to kind of bring him back to uh what really matters in life and kind of relax him a little bit there’s a sense of calm out there we didn’t see a lot of emotion from from Pops on the bag until this thing was was kind of wrapped up and I think that was good for Robert because he was a little scatterbrained a little bit all over the place he was definitely feeling the heat in the moment so to have somebody stable by your side that you trust implicitly 100% of the time probably goes a long way so this is a trophy that’s going to say Robert McIntyre on it but maybe Robert McIntyre and dad is more apt we let that one sit on pops’s mantle for some time unbelievable scenes here and a father’s Pride obviously evident here in these closing moments at the RBC I want to get to a little bit of what this course presented to players over the last four days but we do have to talk about some of these other names as well Ben Griffin I mean applying pressure down the stretcher this could have been Bobby Max far easier but three birdies from 15 through 17 to apply that pressure Griffin was on the precipice of being out of this game not long ago and here he is sort of announcing himself to a larger viewing public what did you make of his Sunday performance here a 65 to cap off the most successful week of his career one that gets him into next week’s elevated field at the memorial Ben Griffin’s a different kind of cat I I like this guy you know he is not only just the 65 here on Sunday Joe but three straight 65s he closed with and and he is kind of that second tier statistically of PGA Tour player right that 50 to 70 there’s a lot of guys in there and you’re looking to see who’s going to be able to break out now what I like about Ben Griffin is he did not back down he did not make this easy he goes out Bird’s 15 16 17 makes Robert McIntyre earned this thing and Ben Griffin is always looking for constant Improvement he’s not afraid to be a little bit dorky to be a little bit different Joe I believe he’s the only guy on the PGA tour who plays a Max Fly golf ball that is something that you don’t see but he went through the testing he went through the you know test out every single golf ball said this is the one for me and I don’t care if I you know am not playing the number one ball in golf or whatever it is I’m going to play what’s best for me so I’ll be interested to see what other things that he does over the next 12 18 24 months to kind of squeeze every ounce of juice out of his game he’s got the Michelson aviators on the holderness and born collar Standing Tall and he stood tall here on Sunday computed himself quite nicely Ben Griffin a solo second here again in the field by way of that Aon next five will be in that designated event at the memorial Rick before we let you go here we will have plenty more coming on our post Round Here on HQ what did you make of the challenge in Hamilton because this is a place that tips out just north of 7,000 yards and still scores were maintained how was this presented to these players yeah so we can’t do anything about the weather and mother nature coming in on Sunday and softening up this golf course so no penalty there but th this restoration was awesome you know I love kind of the the rugged nature of it I love the new green complexes there’s a lot more pinable locations and you don’t have to tuck a lot of pins to make shots and approaches really difficult which which is awesome news so um I thought that this passed all the tests right and you this thing was getting firm and fast before weather rolled in you know Saturday night into into Sunday morning so I’m excited about getting back here and uh having more competitions at Hamilton cuz this was a this was a great test first word always belongs to Rick gaming we will check back in in just a bit thank you Rick and always be sure to join the conversation as it extends Beyond just our coverage here on HQ it’s the first cut podcast anywhere you get your podcast download subscribe and enjoy today
