we’re at downtown Detroit mtown Motor toown in the shadow really of the renen the Renaissance Center as we are ready to go qualifying with a couple of 15minute sessions for the IMA Weather Tech sports car champ ship we were here last year with the Michelin Pilot challenge as they took to the streets this brand new Street circuit for only the second time of use for indie car and imza and it is the two pro categories this weekend we’re live from the Ford performance Global broadcast Center as we bring the whole Community together hello everybody I’m John hindol and joining me here is Jeremy Shaw and Shay Adam Shay uh first of all you’ve been our eyes and ears on the ground uh we’ve had a couple of practice session so far but let’s quickly get to the small but perfectly formed two class grid with a couple of changes notably if we start in GT D Pro in a moment or two because we’re in downtown Detroit for this Detroit straight circuit as uh we me mentioned earlier on it is new track with just nine corners and just under 1.7 miles an interesting pit setup with the pits split one side and the other and there is a right of way issue there as well which I’ll talk about action areas at the first Corner 90° left at that very tight hairpin at the bottom of turn three which was a big action area last year with the pilot challenge cars and then another overtaking area at turn number eight Shay take us through the changes in GT we’ve got two Lexus again they doubled up in GT uh D on the streets of Long Beach it’s the GTD Pro category they’ve doubled up in this time around very odd sensation to walk through the padic yesterday and see what is the 15 Lexus for this weekend with red number panel Thompson and Frankie Montalvo the all silver Driver Line sharing that car for this weekend Parker coming off of a win at Long Beach in the GTD category he was sharing the car then with Ben Barett well Ben is back with Jack boxworth and that duo are very very good on Street courses it’s actually Ben barnet’s record on courses in the US worst finish of second so he’s going to be someone to watch for the race tomorrow but it’s his co-driver Jack Hawksworth who we need to keep an eye on for qualifying today because Jack has actually acred more points through qualifying than any other driver or car in that category so the for always going to be a fan favorite but there’s other car in the field that isn’t normally there is we have 11 cars in the GTD Pro category it’s a Ferrari Conquest racing bringing out their 35 Ferrari it’s normally the 34 it’s Albert Costa once again but this time he’s with Factory Ace Daniel Sarah and they have been very quick so far through the first two practices they turned more laps than any other GT car at 126 compare that to the car with the fewest that would only be 80 so it’s a big discrepancy there Ferrari even been quietly going their work they’re here for one reason and one reason only to win this race the split pits that we were talking about has the GTD Pro cars fueling from the left hand side as they pull into the pit Lane there’s a right hand side as well which is where the prototypes will go and Shay it it’s uh it’s one thing to do this for Indie Car are all the same category but for IM of course two different categories does mean there has to be a certain amount of um sensible driving there but there is a right of way that has been written into the suppl regulations yes and it it’s really more of an issue for the prac sessions because in the race we shouldn’t see all the cars coming in at once uh hopefully if there’s a caution when there’s a caution let’s be realistic then in separate GT Pro first and then GTD Pro um so that there will be a nice little break there but right away given to the prototypes now the prototypes are all on driver’s right as you enter the pit Lane all the GT cars on driver’s left the interesting thing about walking this pit Lane yesterday there is a giant gradient and a slope heading downwards and if the drivers of remember this the six Pensky Porsche and the 31 Cadillac from whan and on the other other side both of the lexuses do not keep their foot on the brake during their pit stop the car will roll forward while fueling and that will be a penalty now the because the pites are 37 1/2 ft long yes I said thatly 37 1/2 ft long compare that to 21t Long pit boxes which is what we’ve been using all year long there’s no wiggle room for working outside of your box or for the car moving while you’re doing service on it so the pit officials will be very diligent about during this 100 minute race and should just be the one start air temperature 24 C track temperature 17 Celsius so not not hot um but not cold either Jeremy Shaw is the third voice in the Ford Global performance uh Ford performance Global broadcast Center first time for the weather tech cars here Jeremy so we’ve not got much data to go on other than the two practice sessions uh we have had we had pilot here last year uh of course and actually I I thought it it provided some pretty decent racing I agree with you John this absolutely it did last year it was very entertaining in sometimes a bit too too too entertaining from some people’s perspective particularly Robert mcness who ended up with a length depression afterwards but look you know it’s it’s a very different kind of a track and you some of the teams here expected expected to be kind of similar in some ways to Long Beach uh they now know that it isn’t um no similarities whatsoever uh it’s a lot bumpier uh it’s very very tight indeed almost all the corners here a first gear at 90° uh and it’s uh a very different challenge indeed uh and and the the main straight the longest straightway which is where the cars will start the race but not where they will finish they will finish in front of where the pit Lane is but they will start on the backstretch the backstretch is is super long but super bumpy I think we’re going to be seeing pretty much all the cars falling in a train down the left hand side of that uh of that long Jefferson Avenue straight because it’s slightly less bumpy than the other side uh it’s it’s uh I think practice this morning show showed that it’s pretty much a one Grove Racetrack and if you get offline it’s very very slippery and even more bumpy so uh I think track position in the race is going to be critical therefore what we’re coming up now for qualifying is going to be absolutely crucial I think to the probably the outcome of the race let alone determining the pole positions uh we’ve had a slight delay in the previous Indie Car session uh with a couple of cars needing recovery and a few delays so we are going to go for a green flag and that will be at uh 4:55 local time so that’s still just over 10 minutes away that gives us the opportunity to have a quick chat about the state of the series at the moment in terms of the championship Jeremy uh with this being uh a split not all of the classes here of course um as far as GTD Pro and GTP are concerned how does the championship look yeah well it very different scenarios really in the two classes for for GTP this is the fifth round out of nine of the season so this will take us beyond the halfway point in the season uh coming to this weekend Dane Cameron and Felipe Nasser in the uh the number seven uh Porsche Pensky Motorsports Porsche 963 well they finished on the podium every single race uh they won of course the Rox 24 at Daytona and then third in each of the subsequent races at Sebring Long Beach and we Raceway Laguna so they’ve got a 50-point lead over pipo danani and Jack Atkin in the Cadillac car number 31 who in are 48 points ahead of 38 points ahead excuse me of the um R the other Cadillac rander sander and Sebastian bour in colum 01 in the manufacturer championship in GTP uh Cadillac has just a 10o edge over Porsche Acura is a distant third and then BMW behind them in GTD Pro however this is only the fourth round out of 10 this season so not yet close to the halfway point that they’ll be found next time out when we get to Watkins Glenn uh and again well not it’s not similar also because consistency hasn’t really been a factor here in GTD Pro the championship is being led by the a0 racing Porsche number number 77 they’ve had a win a third and excuse me a win a second and a ninth from the three races they now hold an edge of 56 points over the Lexus of Defending Series champions Jack aworth and Ben bar and similarly in the manufacturing Championship Porsche leads from Lexus ason Martin is in third position and Chevrolet Corvette looking for its first win of the season in in next up in the manufacturer points in fourth sh Adam uh um I mean there is a big gap at the top of GTP but logic tells me that if you can get a lot of points and get that ahead in a certain amount of time then in like corresponding number of races then surely you can make that up again if somebody has the same sort of look that you had in the first part of the season it’s a fairly obvious thing to see I’m not saying the points in the bank at the start of the Season aren’t a good thing by the way because they clearly are no no they definitely are and and if you’re F by NASA and and Dane Cameron you’re acting like you’re not in the lead of this championship and that’s exactly the way that they’re approaching every race because you can’t think I have a lead and think you’ll be okay until the end of Lal you need to think how do I secure this championship before petite Lal even starts so I’m not completely stressed out at Road Atlanta um but it’s very interesting because I was talking to fuer yesterday and he said you know if we can lose many points in four races and we go out and we do is win races or we aim to win races then we can make it back up and that’s all we need to focus on which is a really good attitude and he kind of laughed because he and Ricky have finished second in the championship the last two years Ricky’s been second in the championship four times in his career and it’s one of those things and he goes well at least I’m not going to finish second this year Jeremy yeah your points yeah there only 50 points spread of course and you there’s so many points on offer these days in the M Tech Sports gu Championship you get 350 for a win uh and even for a uh a a 10th Place finish you get 210 so it’s not that big of a of a difference between the points but we we do also have qualifying points so be 35 points on offer for the poll position 32 for second 33d on on down back from there and by far the biggest scorer in qualifying in GTP uh has been peper danani and that number 31 car 137 points they’ve got from qualifying to the 129 of R of vaner Xander and sebasian bour it’s bour that’s qualified that car every time this season and they are well that they both of those two are 20 odd points ahead of everybody else so you know they’re they’re 30 point they’ve scored 30 points more the second place Cadillac in the overall points than the overall Championship leading Porsche certainly something interesting to to keep an eye on as the season progresses uh if you’re listening to us on IM radio uh we’re aware and we have passed on your comments about the issue to the uh the video stream uh and the guys are working on that at the moment important to not that this is not IMS event of course this is a shared event with indie car so in a lot of ways not masters of our own destiny uh here uh we do have uh the link to the Circuit here at the Ford Glo uh Ford performance Global broadcast Center so we will keep you up with what’s going on um and Shay can give us some qualifying drivers actually and it will be the GT cars all 11 of them that go out first who is doing what uh and when sh can can you see my fingers Catching Fire as the text messages are going out so quickly um we’ve got I an order from people who’ve gotten back to me uh as they did speedily first off would be Ford because they told just one second just one second just been told that the YouTube feed is fine so if you go to IMA um and the YouTube channel there’s no blocks on uh qualifying of course so if you go to the official uh imza channel the YouTube uh on YouTube the video on there is fine imsa.tv apparently are having some issues at the moment but YouTube is fine sorry sh go go ahead good um I’ll start with forward because they told me qualifiers on Wednesday and they did it and I thought they were kidding but they are sinc here it’s Joey hand qualifying the 65 and Harry Tel qualifying the 64 the next to get back to me was AO racing with Rexy who now by the way is sporting a gold tooth in celebration of I believe it was eating too much candy after celebrating the victory at lagona uh so now he has a cavity and a gold tooth but it is a good little thing to celebrate that Victory um so Seb prio is behind the wheel of the Porsche we’ve got Ross gun in the Aston Martin for Heart of racing I’m saying that one because I’m actually seeing that one on the screen um Corvette racing was the next one to respond and it is Antonio Garcia in the number three he has been insanely fast this weekend we need to keep an eye on that car for the pull position potentially uh Tommy Milner is the driver of the number four Corvette and he actually just gave Corvette the first win of the GT3 car a couple weeks back so let’s see if Tommy can get his second ever pull position in the Motor City be a pretty good poetic place to get it done for Paul Miller Racing it’s Madison snow and with the lexuses we’ve got Franky montealvo in the number 15 and Jack Hawksworth in the number 14 and as I mentioned Jack’s gotten more points this year than anyone else from qualifying the only car that I don’t know uh that would be the Ferrari because thank you Steve balotti it’s olly Jarvis the number nine fast McLaren SO waiting for the green flag which might might be uh still a couple or three minutes away Jeremy we’re moving into a very busy time for all sports car uh races uh Nob ring 24 tomorrow we’ll bring that to you live uh on rs1 and uh we’ll inter interpers that with the 100 minute race here next weekend it’s the mon test which we have live for you uh on uh rs1 then it’s leemon and we’re at Watkins Glenn oh also we’ve got small matter of Mid Ohio next weekend uh as well uh how do these drivers going to split themselves between all of this and how are some of the teams and crew members and manufacturer Representatives this is a extremely congested schedule particularly for the GT3 drivers in the next few weeks with the crowd strike 24 hours of Spar coming up as well so it is a good time to be involved in sports car racing still waiting for the green flag at Radio if you want to get in touch with us uh um and once again if you’re struggling to get the pictures at the moment the if you go to the official YouTube channel of imza you should be able to see pictures there uh and there’s no blocks by the way oh uh so we are working on getting the video up on imza TV as well is what I’m being told so Jeremy what sort of time should we be looking for here in this session uh taking the first practice into account yeah good question actually because uh we’ve had two practice sessions as as we’ve already heard the first uh one was fting this morning uh for an hour then an hour and a half after that interestingly however there was nothing on the track in in the inter in the inter apart from sort of parade laps or something like that but no no no race cars are on track uh so those two sessions I mean impa was track sweepers this weekend the track was really really dusty at the beginning of the morning the first the fastest time at the end of the first session was a 106.8 99 that’s an average speed of just over 88 milph improved upon that by uh but by only half a second to be the fastest in in the second session was Philip a right towards the end of the session in number 24 BMW he turned a 1 minute 6. 348 uh to be the fastest time and I’ve been canting various teams up and down pit Lane and uh nobody really knows what to expect I mean the Sims yeah the teams had a had a Sim program they were they were able to gain some information from but was all the engineers that told me it’s it’s that’s one thing you you already find out what it really is when you actually get and I I’ve I’ve been asking people you what time what time can we expect in qualifying I haven’t really got a straight answer but most people think it’d be low low fives or possibly even high fours High wom at Falls uh in this session this afternoon so that’s what we’d expect for the GTP cast for gtt Pro the fastest time so far as a 1096 that was by the number four Corvett Tommy milder uh he was ahead of his teammate Antonio Garcia by about a couple of ten of a second so it’s Corvettes 1 and two in the practice sessions uh followed by the AO racing Porsche of SE prio turn minute 9.8 and then the conquest Ferrari which is Albert Costa out 110.2 so I would think in GT D Pro we’re going to see timesed into the into the eights during this session of course that will be a uh establish a record here for this brand new track 4 Championship looks this green flag uh SP 55 minutes past the hour two quick fire 15 minute sessions as will set the grid for the Chevrolet Detroit sports car classic which comes your way tomorrow Saturday and that is a 100 minute race so two short races off the bounce and then we’ll head to Mid Ohio uh weather tech not at Mid Ohio of course this is the uh this will be the feature race for the Mich pilot Chan who were here on there last year so it’s a little bit of a change around so cars going out onto this just under just over 1.7 mile circuit Madison snow for Miller Racing to Garcia for Corvette in the number three Tomy four Oly Jarvis in the F McLaren the number nine Jack HW 14 v suan 15 R roing ason Daniel Sarah he had the RO of the Ferrari 2 96 for Conquest 35 Harry and jul M set the for a racing the gold here all racing Rexy number 77 and these lock times will come in thick and fast it is the number 77 I think that sneaked out first coming down the long back straight at the moment to finish the uh sector the first sector now heading down to the hairpin and we’ll give you some times the 129 that’s just comeing is I don’t think that’s going to be through the hait and it’s tur right hand through turn four very tight very not a lot of places to pass here it does make an interesting qualifying session here Jeremy um and it does have e gold I suppose it’s in the same sort of area as the old F1 was although it’s not using all the same stets you know this section that we’re watching the AO Porsche come down that that was kind kind of where the old track was I was to sever other races here on this track back at back in the F1 days I tell you what it was a sensational racetrack it was very different to what we have now but it was really really uh well liked by every it was pretty bumpy but it was a real challenge for the drivers and I tell you what I’ll never forget around two now pan there was a long big not really heavy open head left if you like 180° long long left-hander uh and the sound of Aon Center in particular on and off the power just keeping the turbo spinning on the Lotus through there was was sensation something I would never ever forget Warriors and CH dur track now it’s still you still got some some interesting characteristics thanks to n Dobby who tells us that it’s TV at the up and running with sound running you’ve got 11 minutes to 21 seconds 20 seconds 19 18 17 for those perhaps who are listening on rs2 you’re B with the challenge and you move around it is the conquest racing Ferrari that is at the top of the times with the 1151 062 vas Sullivan cars if you are is joining us talking about this earlier on they have been doubling up and they two GTD cars at Long Beach where there was no GTD Pro ENT two GTD Pros here where there’s no GTD and effectively as we come down under 11 minutes and Tommy Milner gets a result for Corvette uh they have been struggling for a bit of pace in the early part of the season with this relatively new gt3r 113.5 79 10 second in the number 14 the full season V RCF GT3 UK car again being um short practicing at the very this circuit around World some more linked linkly some more video that was out think um somewhere in Europe w’t there was it it Spa have I made that up anyway I saw some camouflaged uh pictures of the camouflaged car black and white uh we don’t even know what it’s going to be called yet whether it’ll be Alexis or a Toyota but it is effectively there a placement for this RCF which is now uh Jeremy the um the most experienced GT3 car the field shall I put it that way yeah and uh they’re still learning things about this car well that’s the amazing thing and you know go back to the foot four days where Ralph used to come out with a different car every year uh and uh not always was it faster but it generally was and yeah GT GTD nowadays what it it’s every two years I think so least not every year but you say Alex has been around for a long long time and it’s still a very very effective tool won the championship last season second in points coming into this weekend and there’s Jack HS with that moment Second Chance 2 73 over in Rexy the Tyrannosaurus Rex Porche it’s going to be interesting to see John you with I talked about it earlier on that we had two sessions this morning two practice sessions for him so with nothing in between but since that uh and coming into qualify now with the the Indie NEX cards were out liks as they used to be and then of course it was a a first practice session the weekend for the Indie cards as well so now there’s a good bit more rubber laid down to get me interesting with the GT cars out there what effect that is going to have for them uh after what they were learned during the first [Music] two sh Adam keeping an eye on the time still a little way away from fp2 yeah and the track has continued to evolve as Jeremy rightley says we we did a 109 654 in the end of the second practice session that was Tommy mmer who turned a total of 69 laps had some good experience out there on theack track but with our best time right now coming from Daniel Sarah of a 1107 well that’s still 1.1 seconds off and yes the track is more in Shadee but the air temperature has elevated progressively throughout the day so that would be having an effect as well already halfway through the session it’s Ferrari number 35 from the two Corvettes four from three then the Porsche of AO racing Rex number 77 at the top four separated by half a second as Daniel sah goes quicker again gets down to 116 Jeremy yep so we’ got a couple of t in hand now over the two Corvettes so split by 4,000 last time around uh Sebastian prio into second position between the two just 011 behind him and now Antonio Garcia Vol to the top in the number three Corvette at a 1 minute 9968 that bettered Now by Tommy Miler W 9949 so two Cor looking very very Stout once again here uh as as they should be around on their very much their home ground uh with the renant center is where Chevrolet and GM is [Music] based time’s now coming down to what we expected there as a quick time from milet at 109 949 Corvette first and second they’ll be loving this literally in the shadow of their Global head quarters forward of course are on the streets as well at the moment the Mustang sitting in Sixth and eighth edition but still only a second away still wearing Jay and proud displaying the Champions Livery that uh we’ve seen them running in the last couple of races yeah this Heritage delivery which is on the car for this weekend as well as a big tank slapper for Joey H get to gather back up and continues round Joey really giving it full beans in this run trying to represent Ford crowd because there will be several members of the Ford family at the track for tomorrow’s race and they need to put on a show to impress the people and the men and women who build these cars because the Flat Rock Assembly Plant isn’t too far away and every Mustang that is on the streets around the world comes out of that plan so pretty cool that they get to do this really truly in backfield it was spot that the GT3 was spotted thank you uh for who uh were have told us that so down to the last 5 and a half minutes and it is still Corvette but now from POR in second place seio jumps up this is a short track Jeremy so we’re going to expect small margins and 015 between first and second and 04 between second and third and say that pre goes to the top with the a racing green PA yeah 10 19. 794 then for the uh Porsche Garcia improv at a 10 19.69 five uh and now we are almost down to the best times we had at the end of the second practice session uh within fractions of a second of that Tommy Miler back to the top in car four this is not all yet tribute to the Michelin tires by the way as well as the drivers that are showing consistent Pace all the way through as the VP fuel is burning off the cars are getting lighter the short F and Furious qualifying sessions uh really leave no margin for era you can’t make any changes in the P Lane in this cat so you basically you’re running what you B so they send you out there as a them and it’s up to you and that was Alexis just brushing the wall and taking off the some of the branding the Michelin guys will be delighted about that CU they’ve just taken a bit of Firestone branding Off the Wall than Jack yeah I that’s what it takes Jack it’s Jack that’s what it takes around here if you if you’re not if you’re not shaving the walls you’re not going fast enough because you’re not using all of the racetrack particularly in GT cars so uh now we get it down to faster times Antonio Garcia finally eclipse is the best time from the morning practice session 10 9.4 now for Antonio in car number three seio is going quickly Jack Hawks with is going faster he was purple in the middle sector a lap or so [Music] ago down to last 3 minutes that’s going to be a couple of laps for most people maybe three Tonio Garcia back to the Top by a full 1.8 one of a second that’s a huge gap in the context of what we’ve been talking about 10948 what a bizarre week end this is for me having to get my head around a 10945 eight lap time and 8 Minute 10 was the qualifying session that we were working on at the nurburg ring earlier on today Ford performance Global broadcast Center in fact weekend uh the radi shed network of audio and video channels working hard as our our colleagues at NASCAR Productions up in North Carolina thank you for all your hard work and it would appear that things are back together as far as the TV sound is concerned so whe whether you normally watch that on YouTube or via imsa.tv or the player at imo.com uh it would appear that everything is back back together again I would point it out that uh we Destiny this week with the sh down to under two minutes to go who has got per Jack Hawks with improv brushing the wall to a one n seven vared Jeremy behind the top couple of cars yeah there for all of Jaris still finds himself eigh in the faf from McLaren and car number n Antonio G he clipped another couple of T away from his best time on his last at 10 9227 then for Antonio Garcia he’s got nearly 4/10 of a second over his teammate po Tommy Miler that’s a surprise to be that much quicker than his teammate sh will try and reduce that as he just goes purple in the middle sector does milder in car four and I’m not surprised to see these times coming down the more and more you the closer we get to the checken flag Tire degradation I’m told around here is pretty minimal if at all it’s just you bir the fuel the car gets a bit lighter more rubber gets laid down the track gets [Music] faster so who has still got something to give Frank mon carvo put his fast lapping last time around and here’s the first car coming into the pit and it’s Madison snow uncharacteristically the Paul Miller bm4 GT3 is Stone last at the moment and two seconds away oh my goodness oh my goodness they will not happy with that Tonio Garcia now 3/10 of a second ahead of the rest of the field which is led by his teammate but then just Z two three of a second back to third position and we’ve still got the GTP cars to come yeah you jack orks with there snuck in between Tommy Milner and SE prio there wasn’t much of a gap prio though is in the pits he best he can end up his fourth position just a couple of seconds to the check and flag John sh watching this one oh very very long for the number four car thought he going to hit the wall there in turn two but somehow Milner got it turned around and I don’t think he’s going to improve here no he did improve on that last lap though he got down to 109.2 eight still 2/10 of a second however be behind Antonio Garcia time has elapsed let’s see who is [Music] on has taking the checked flag Jarvis he’ll be up better the eight sah is on a good lap where is that Ferrari coming round at the moment the number 23 car is will be the third to last car to take the checker flag just coming through the turn number eight now Corvette coming to the line is the number three car that’s just a head of Daniel Sarah and goes to the top anonio Garcia can’t keep a good man down Jeremy he is absolutely on form this weekend yeah and uh that’s a tremendous lap by Antonio garia fully three1 and changed quicker than his teammate Tommy Milner so a feather in the cap there for Antonio Garcia what a tremendous effort in qualifying that was for the Spaniard this will be his 10th pole position in total and did the Ferrari improve no it didn’t on that last it did improve oh no he did yes he did he came up to fifth position my apologies with a 109 7 9 really big moment though for the number four Tommy Milner I said at at the time he was very lucky to get as he turned left off Franklin I thought he was into the fir stone with it is super tight down there you can barely get two cars wide down there uh Antonio Garcia doesn’t often get qualify sh and it’s been quite a while as he’s claimed a pull position yeah his last pull position can see last year uh he’s gotten to qualify every round this year they were disqualified at Sebring but he was third in category at Daytona second at lagona and now finally getting that P1 Antonio is going to be very pleased with getting the job done for GM as you rightly say John very much in the shadow of vhq right now well that is going to make a lot of people happy uh headlines for today here on Fast Friday Jeremy but they’ll want to back that up tomorrow it’ll be an all yellow front R for Corvette with Vasa Sullivan and Jack hawksw withth on the inside of Ro number two he’ll have the Porsche of here all racing for company the number seven s then it’s the Ferrari of conquest and Daniel Sarah on the very last lap gets up to the inside of raw three heart racing Aon Martin so just for the moment let’s put aside and I’m not saying this to deligate what they’ve done but two Corvettes on the front row then Lexus Porsche Ferrari Aston Ford with Harry Tino in seven Ali ja McLaren so of the top eight cars Jeremy seven different manufacturers yeah I mean well we’ve got two for and two Chevies other than that it’s it’s one car per manufacturer isn’t it and they’re all they’re all pretty close the uh the um yeah of course we’ve got two Lexus this weekend it’s a good point um but the uh the two Corvettes though they got a half a second on everybody else the Lexus IS third then from the Lexus back to the McLaren so Lexus Porsche Ferrari as Marin forward and McLaren all covered by just 4/10 of a second so super tight between second and eighth not tight at at the front no that is a big gap that is a big gap um on a circuit that’s uh just over a mile and a half 1.7 miles 3/10 there uh the whole field now Madison snow a little bit off the pace so they’re clearly not happy but you can go down to eighth position and still be within a second um not a great qualifying show for Joey H or frankly calvo there didn’t see to get up to Pace in the Ford number 65 or the vas Sullivan Lexus number 15 no but for particularly the 65 Ford they weren’t expecting to be qualifying up the front uh or the 64 actually they’ll be pleased with the time that har managed to get out of the car prly after all the issues they had in fp1 where they spent a significant amount of time back behind the wall uh Frankie is a silver rated driver and he’ll freely admit he is the silver driver of the field his co- driver Parker Thompson also but Parker is usually the finishing driver so Frankie to be 1.3 seconds off of Antonio Garcia not a bad deal especially considering everybody except for Joey Han learned the track today Joey did the pilot race last year 1.3 seconds off and it was what8 off of his teammate Jack Hawksworth hey if you’re off a Jack in the same car by less than a second that’s a good day for me yeah I’m not going to argue with that Shay absolutely right I tell you what Shay we you and I chatted earlier on today and uh you what we we had a conversation about the Chevrolets tell me what you been you told what you told me earlier they didn’t have high hopes and were putting it all out on the table and showing their hand but they thought everybody else was going to rise up and pass them yeah and my response to that was my response to that was yeah right I mean we never see in practice what the Chevrolet have got up their sleeve uh and yet we did find this morning and no surprise at all to see those two two Corvettes at the front of the pile here in qualifying John thank you Jeremy uh it’s uh I I I don’t know um honestly look they they’ve got the result that they wanted uh I suppose how they get to it we used to see this even in the GTE days didn’t we where the early the early sessions for all of the GTE cars you never really saw the pace of them of course in those days they were using confidential tires and potentially three different tire compounds um on the car at the same time not the same now with the Mich control TIR for across the classes um there does seem to be a different way of using the tires that the different teams and manufacturers go through uh however when it comes down to qualifying it’s it’s about getting out there in the 15 minutes and and and showing what you’ve got and what Corvette have got is the pace to lock out the front of the grid by uh the 10 of a second at the very least we move on now to the GTP for the first time also on the streets of Downtown Detroit and I’m very interested to see how these cars go around there this is the first opportunity we’ve had to see the on the track the uh fre practice sessions earlier on today we didn’t get to see so I’m very interested to see how these cars handle around here and Jeremy I’ll come to you you’ve been scrutinizing uh scrutinizing the times what are we looking for if we’re getting a 10 uh 109 for the GT what we’re going to get for GT piece yeah I mean look we we’ve got some more Ming rubber laid down now clearly I think uh it would be apparent to me at least that the farstone rubber really wasn’t helping the GT cars at least in in comparison to what they had learned this morning with just Michel in L on the racetrack during those first two practice sessions of the day now we’ve got more M rubber down there uh and I think it’s it’s going to be more uh applicable for the GTP cars and GTP teams to have have learned something this morning and apply it more to this afternoon so uh fastest time in practice was a 106.3 uh I think we’re certainly going to see times down in the fives uh the question is is anybody going going to go as quickly as a four perhaps this afternoon and again there’s there’s just not enough data yet uh yet learned to be able to answer that question we’re going to find out very shortly waiting for the timing screen to reset but sh Adam as ever has the finger on the pulse I can see Nick tandy’s eyes uh in his uh through the the open helmet visor for his Porsche 963 who else is going to be qualifying sh for sure will be qualifying the 31 I saw him watching in his full NX uh the start of the GT cars when that session was getting ready to begin so once again the P Meister the man is qualified no worse than second through four races this year three pull position will be handling the duties for the 31 Cadillac for the sister Cadillac the PO winner at the last race the 01 and it will be and b day during the qualifying duties there Seth in the first practice session went off three times in a runoff areas trying to figure out the edge of adhesion for the Michelin tires he figured it well because well instead of going off again he instead set the fastest lap uh which was then later toppled but at the time it was a very impressive stun Ranger vanand when he got in the car went off twice and the run off as well so that car has figured out the limits of breaking around the street course uh I can tell you it should be bent Gall in the number five as far as protom petition is concerned it should be phelipe uh sorry Dane Cameron in the number seven that is the helmet pherk for the number 10 Wayne Taylor racing onred uh we’ve got potentially yesie Con in the number 24 and Connor D Felipe in the 25 and I’m going to guess time in vanderhelm the number 85 for jdc am I correct on any of those John um I will tell you as they come out b day in the 01 Nick Tandy you de Cameron in the seven Philip aler correct in the 10 a in the BMW number 24 Nick y in the 25 Pani of course 31 Jordan Taylor and ton vanderhelm I’m just waiting to see if it’s is Jimmy bruny yes it is who has got another teammate this new teammate this weekend uh for the portion of 963 of uh proon competition sh and a driver just making his second start in him well this is the first pre this is the first that Jimmy bruny has shared a car with one person and it’s the same person as the last time because the weather tech Raceway Lona sea that was bent bol’s first Forever series start I’m surprised that they’re giving him the duty of uh well the bigger part of the race because you wouldn’t imagine that they would do two driver CHS but Jimmy groy has done more laps than anyone else today he’s done 77 turns around this course clearly he has figured something out because he was up amongst the top of the charts at several opportunities I’m surprised they gave him qualifying duties but I’m also thinking maybe they’re thinking they can get [Music] points another 15 minutes uh the there is a slight difference of course with the gtps they are allowed to come in and change tires not like to anything else but you can stick another setup V or should you re quiet them yeah which I don’t expect any to be doing during this session John I mean I think uh I think from what I can gather most people are probably not going to be changing ties in the race tomorrow and if they if they are they’ve already scrubbed a set in join that earlier practice sessions so or or or have another opportunity to do so tomorrow morning in practice if they so wish they got lots of track lots of track time this weekend for a 100 minute race which is kind of bizarre really into the pit Lane for both of the Porsches so they are going to change tires bizar um the down the right hand side of the split pit Lane there’s no island in the middle there’s a um a painted Island if you will um they are brand new Michelin that certainly going on the seven there okay yep and front and rear which is see but I suppose you would want to have scuffed in both sets because Pensky do like to mix they did rears only on one car at lagona and right sides on the other so it’s good to see that they’re keeping their options open and when I talked to several of the teams yesterday about tires who might do What Porsche said they would like new tires at some point during the race but those were the drivers and the drivers always greedy oh and now it has switched over John Ben visot is qualifying five so it’s not right that makes more [Music] sense so a split strategy between the different outfits in uh the gtps these are big cars to and they look great so [Music] Pani versus Sebastian B the field Joel Taylor yeah just look at the rear wing on that um on that accurac heads up up the hill there towards turn two and on to Jefferson Avenue just like look how small that rear wing is uh let’s not forget of course that the aerodynamics on these cars they’re homologated you can’t change it what You’ want to do for this weekend is pile on as much downfalls as you possibly can you have big rear wing more more more flaps on the front end uh and get the car planted to the road you can’t do that you have to run the car I mean they’re running the cars the same aerosp as they are here this weekend as they did on the high Banks of Daytona back in January uh that’s you that’s the way the rules are for these GTB cars it’s it’s the same for everybody uh so you they’re all struggling for grip they don’t have much at all the GT the GT cars I think are significantly quicker through the corners than the ggp cars here because of that lack of down Force but it’s going to make I think pretty interesting when you when the where the the classes are intermingled as a race progresses [Music] tomorrow don’t forget you can follow along the Telemetry with.com DP uh Telemetry forward slash and you can also see the gears and the speeds Etc starting to see some times coming in now that are quicker than the GT D cars the GTD Pro cars earli on Philip aler B Joel Taylor to the top with the 108 W probably going to find what Jeremy the better part second there uh to get p position are we we going to get down to 10 we’ll get down to 107 something oh no no no we should be in the fives at least by the end of the session no no doubt no doubt about it um the question is are we get down to the fours I think surpris down to FES at least six 1 minute 6.3 was the fastest time in practice um and to say you because they don’t have much downforce and because there is a little time degradation the the tires are just going to get cars are going to get faster throughout this 15minute session I think it’s going to down as it was in GT to the last couple of minutes see the PO in time Wayne Taylor racing in the Acura for the number 40 car that’s Jordan Taylor added factor to one two for wtr with andred 1071 1072 then R then time Vel and B with the tour who popped up on the the car always BS it look to me as if he’s the World War One fighter pilot looking through that is a a Target Pani to the top now with seven call it 8 minutes to go do you have that on a heart Key by this point in the season John uh almost certainly yes yeah he’s he he is he’s a force of nature no doubt here’s the number 10 coming to the Line This is Philip aluer in the chome blue and black machine crosses the strike goes to the top so they’re now getting closer to what Jeremy was expecting to see 106 and a half that is quicker than Philip managed during the second qualify uh excuse me second practice session this morning he turned 106.6 during that second practice now down to 6.5 so that I think is the uh the new Benchmark if you like not the fastest time yet 6 63 was the quickest time this morning by Philip Eng in the BMWs we haven’t yet seen the BMWs turning a representative lap during this session Dane Cameron to the top with the fastest time of the day so far 106.0 to4 for number seven Porsche Pensky 963 and still plenty of time left here 6 and a half minutes so that’s seven or eight laps fastest in the first second for Dan C fast in second for Sebastian bour and up to Second and then down the third because Philly aler makes it a 23 for the 10 and 40 wtr with Andre he it’s Porsche and D Cameron AS Jeremy says to the top we have four cars within 410 of a set and with six minutes to go I I would suggest that you have not seen the last of the improvements yet jer no no no not by long way here’s the first five 105.7 70 for Dane Cameron in car number 7 uh We’ve now got what top four cars are faster than the best time from the second practice session and we’re only going to get quicker from here we still more than 5 minutes [Music] remaining finally for the BMW’s r on track now turning at least some sort of a lap time rs2 is Radio time and vanderhelm out there for jdc Miller Motorsport going around the yellow Corner which is the Pensky higher corner and now heading back towards the start Finish Line crossing the strike for Tim with 5 minutes to go that yellow number 85 car Nick tandi with two very fast sectors in sectors one and two hasn’t been able to get set three there J no that that time by time in vanel that’s a full second quicker than he managed in in practice more than that in actual fact so good job in that number 85 car he’s only seventh on the charts at the moment but into the into the sixes now got a second car into the fives you a second and third the two accurate now albu kerk and Taylor separated by well nothing basically uh 105.8 for aluer 1059 for Taylor and it’s still that time B for Dane camon 10 5.77 F this at the moment and Nick T did improve to Fourth position it’s Porsche Pensky Motorsport 963 number seven from the two Taylor racing with hand directly cars the 10th at number 40 three cars are separated all of 210 second actually no of a second and Nick Tandy is within 3/10 uh of a second time and Vell down to 10665 7 3 and 3/4 minutes to go all of the race tomorrow L life in sound and vision for those of you in the US of course you’ll be watching our colleagues from NBC Sport but you can tune in on Sirus XM on rs2 will’ll be here in the for performance Global broadcast Center tomorrow afternoon Al yellow still only the eighth fastest number 25 for BMW one position and less than attent to the second behind his teammate Philip new fastest time it’s the Cadillac of Sebastian bour once again 5762 that’s precisely 8 1,000 of per second quicker than D Cameron or is it John as Philip aler goes second to split the two unbelievable now we’re down well into the fives with what 1 2 3 4 five cars into the one minute or fives wow Sebastian bour to the top and Tandy the man from bed the bedam bullet goes to the top with the number six porensky Motorsport and daran’s G off he spun it coming out of the penultimate corner here comes one of the BMWs well done people to get that car to the wall but this is going to be an Austin poers golf cart moment as he does the ubiquitous 26 point turn and he CS the red flag he’s going to lose all these times Well two fastest laps two FL fastest laps will disappear there tanding got through before the red flag and then Cameron in second it’s a PPM lock out for the 963 105 360 for tandi with a minute and 51 seconds and we’re C down and there was contact with the wall drivers left from people to he comes through the corner and I got on the dirt click the wall not sure bit maybe yeah definitely yeah he did clip the wall on dri right and that looks like he may have Bren re but he has he’s Bren the r suspension so there would have been no further improvement from people it’s a game of centimet here no doubt BMW gets through behind him and I think he’s well he’s he’s got the car back to the pit under on Steam um but with a minute to go there’s not going to be a time time enough to resume and therefore I reckon lady and gentleman that we’re going to have a pora Pensky Motorsport lock out at the front of the field and the most significant part of this John it’s the first time all year a CAC has not an on PA huge moment for the number seven por that white walled its tires coming through the square right-hander fact Nick T exactly the same at another Corner they both of the Porsches have been playing fast and loose with the wall all three Porsches have been I’ll come in again have been play fast and loose with the wall and all of the left rear so they’re going to be having to look at the left rear shaft and where that goes into the gear box before they go racing Tomorrow there’s Dam on the left rear of both of the Pensky Porsches um P Port cards and the bright yellow number [Music] 85 so what do we make of that then sh Adam Nick from Dan from Sebastian from phip from Jordan from the top six Ben scal in seventh position for that portion I think the only portion that did scrap the wall to be quite honest from Nick Y and a then time and and people of course he’s going to lose you Fast Times and that’s why 31 car is in 10th position there’ll be some happy people uh por shensky Motorsport share this afternoon for and none happier than the man whose name is over the door and who’s sitting on top of the pit box because Mr Roger Pensky is up there to see Nick Tandy get this pull position for he and the entire organization it’s very very cool for Nick uh his last pull position Bell is 2021 which was not actually a race for points that was just Nick qualifying best so if we go back further it would be the road Atlanta 6 hour in 2020 it’s been a while since Nick has been able to rack up those polls yeah this is some good news for paa as they continue their build up to Theon 24 hours with the team decanting to Circuit to last start for next weekends uh next weekends test and then of course the week end racing so let’s quickly run through before we sign off here and tell you is a Porsche pensy motorport 1 to 67 excellent I like that uh in terms of getting the numbers right from cing the 01 of Sebastian bour he’ll have wi Taylor racing Acura number 10 with Philip Albert Kirk on board for company on Row three it’s the team car Jordan Taylor for wtr with Andrey in the 40 Philip p the best in the BMWs in six position and those top six separated by a little over half of one second on the 1.7 mile circuit then bencal and Nick y on Raw for ton vanderhelm and Pete D remember he loses his fastest two times for call causing the red flag ear we saw a Corvette racing by Pratt Miller lock out on the front row of the GTD po grid ahead of Vasa Sullivan’s Lexus and the Airing Porsche some final thoughts from you Jeremy Shaw it’s tight at the front of both of those uh certainly the GTP possibly slightly Gap that we expected uh between Corvettes and the rest of the GTD cars yeah definitely so in the in GTD I wasn’t expecting two Corvettes to be that for far clear of everybody else but super tight once again in GTP another really exciting session I mean up until that that last lap that they that they had where the Porsches both improved their times number six and number seven prior to that the top four cars have been covered by less than less than aund of a second I think it was actually it was ridiculous ously tight so I think we’re in for an exciting race tomorrow but brilliant day certainly for Porsche to have both of its two cars on the front row disappointment for Cadillac but disappointment also for BMW uh they Philip H I think was purple on his sector time on that on the last lap he didn’t get to checker flag before the uh red flag came out so that didn’t count he ends up the fastest of the BMWs is in sixth position and having led the practice earlier on today that’ll be a disappointment for the BMW team rll on Street cir track position is uh key supp por Motorsport you’ve got to say it they a job this afternoon yep they’ve done the job and they’ve got the 35 and 32 points for qualifying so Dane Cameron and F Nasser will extend their Championship lead they won’t see that being eaten into by any of the immediate people following up on them so that’s good news but this is a race that throws strategy into Play Because with a 10minute minimum drive time tomorrow anything and let’s be honest everything can happen so just because you qualified well doesn’t mean you’re going to finish well yeah and watch out for people TI saving towards the end of the race as well because it will be enough fuel to get you to the Ed from where you stop and that might mean uh no tires at all for either of the classes will take you through the Porsche keys to the race in Michelin count down to Green my great thanks to sh Adam and Jo Shaw for joining me in the for performance glob broadcast Center Rob made sure that our audio got to the World on rs2 and hard work as ever by uh our NASCAR Productions team who uh got the pictures out to the world we’ll be back tomorrow for a 100 minute race and we’ll be on Sirius XM as well if you are in the US bye for now

  1. Technical circuit… SO narrow. It's like a NFS street race. I thought Long Beach was tight, but the sight lines there are so much better.

  2. Omg , !!!!!! I dont know what corner it is , but when they come out of one of the turns they are staring a concrete wall and they have to swerve a hard left to miss the wall , what a joke of a " race track" , there is gonna be alot of torn up race cars by the end of sunday !!!!!!

  3. Here's some of the amazing tracks they said no to when they chose this dumpster fire of a track: Sonoma, COTA, Gilles Villnueve, Mont Tremblant, VIR, NOLA, Barber, Portland, Mid-Ohio, Miami, Charlotte, Pocono, Talladega, Lime Rock

  4. I'm sorry, IMSA, but this track is straight garbage. I'm not necessarily against street tracks as Long Beach is great and St Pete works well enough, but this looks like some dystopian construction site with no room to maneuver. The repair bills on Saturday are gonna be ridiculous.

  5. Admit it.. This is a Mickey Mouse trace.. The original F1 track in 86, was much better.. Why spend all of this money and make such an amateur track??

  6. While I sincerely appreciate all the effort that goes into making this event happen on city streets, I am not a fan of this track. I was never a huge fan of Belle Isle (and have attended in person), but it was much better than this track. That said, I also understand that leaving Belle Isle was not really a choice.
