[Music] freaking first cut golly welcome to the first cup podcast I’m Rick gaming and this is your round one recap for this week’s RBC Canadian open joining me to break it all down Patrick McDonald is here Patrick is everything okay yeah I got the peacock peacock and in the background right now so uh had to had to turn off the the Telly as they say across the pond what’s going on Rick not much what do you usually so when golf coverage is over what do you usually go to um like post golf cover what do I watch yeah uh you know I haven’t been watching a whole lot I got into a new Apple TV show recently that’s uh honestly it was a good couple episodes out the gate but recently it’s been pretty bad it’s called Dark Matter I think oh I saw an ad for that the first couple were really good and then it it’s really falling off a cliff interesting okay well then I won’t I won’t watch it then well maybe watch the first two and then also be disappointed like me yeah it’s it’s why it’s why I don’t really start watching shows anyway because I’m like what am I gonna do am I gonna get committed to this and then if I like it I’ve got to watch like nine Seasons if I don’t I don’t like it I wasted my time I just it’s too big of a risk to start a new show man you sound like me in in dating pretty much yeah exactly it’s like oh this could go on we could like each other that sounds horrible I know if we get married and have to spend the rest of our lives together to be the worst so why am I even dealing with this well listen we got to talk about the RBC Canadian open but there is uh breaking news from the judicial system charges uh that we need to discuss every American needs to discuss and of course that’s Scotty Sheffer and his charges at Al Louisville being dropped Jefferson County attorney Mike O Connell said quote based on the totality great word of the evidence my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr Sheffer Mr sheffer’s characterization that this was a quote big misunderstanding is corroborated by the evidence end quote so there you go seems as if uh the the final chapter of the well maybe not I don’t know maybe this maybe he’s a new man and this will turn him into some type of Rebel but uh I was gonna say it seems like the final chapter of Scotty’s uh lawbreaking days has been written maybe knock on wood knock on wood who who knows if uh he wins a big a big tournament or something but yeah Common Sense prevails but I wouldn’t say It’s the final uh final section of this story oh boy with the Brian Gillis statement that I was under the impression was not real at the beginning when it was sent to me I thought it was completely false so he has a statement and then he goes PS dot dot dot yes the department has us buying freaking $80 pants to those concerned they were indeed ruined but Scotty it’s all good I never would have guessed I’d have the most famous pair of pants in the country for a few weeks because of this take care and be safe Brian how’d you feel about that my uh immediate reaction was this is how my articles would read if I had publishing power you see the note in there where he like kind of apologizes but he was like I was actually also kind of in the right at the same time yeah and then he threw in his actual thoughts there at the end I can’t believe they released this I can’t believe they released it either and also it’s like this last minute you know uh 9 9% of this interaction has felt one way and then in the last in the last 1% he’s like no come on guys I’m actually a good guy this is what just all kidding here we’re all friends come on come on he he honestly he might have won me over all this information coming out of uh I was about to call him professor Gillis officer Gillis the donuts this the statement he could be just a guy’s guy for all we know this statement solidified the fact for me that he is an idiot I should probably not go back to Louisville anytime soon he is an idiot it was it was literally that tweet uh I I put it out there it was like and another thing I’m not mad please don’t put in the newspaper that I got mad right yeah exactly exactly all right so so so after the Gillis note can is we are we done we can be done talking about the pants we can be done talking about this or are we gonna when we get back to the PGA Championship next year are we gonna say oh remember it’s been a year since or when Scotty wins at Pinehurst does this turn more into um anger when he had a the second leg of the Triple Crown ripped from him you know who is the biggest winner out of all of this Rick uh Xander Schley the PJ tour chaplain oh yes because we we talked about it there were some decision making there on Saturday Scotty Sheffer wasn’t there 100% mentally he needed his bagman to have his aame and the chaplain his name is escaping me at the moment his name is I believe I don’t want to get it wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s Brad Payne not that I need not that we need to name names of that is to throw under the bus Brad pain he he hands Scotty Sheffer a driver on number four that that in itself could have been a criminal offense that we could have been talking about right now I had a very short interaction with Brad he’s a very nice guy okay you talked to him yes of course I did come on I’m out there hop noobing with the people he is a very very nice guy uh I do with the people I do not blame him for anything whatsoever but this is a entirely Patrick take let me be the first one to say I’m shocked the PJ tour chaplain is a very nice guy would have been would have been new to me if this guy was just a complete oh he’s horrible a complete jerk walks around like he can turn water into wine um no I’m I’m I’m joking sort of a little bit listen it’s probably a combination of all things right I mean it’s uh it’s Scotty shefer not having not having Ted Scott it’s the it’s the the adrenaline dump it’s everything it’s everything he shoots the worst round of the year and uh you know doesn’t win a major a lot of guys a lot of guys don’t win Majors there we go great uh great perspective Rick how in the world am I gonna get this back to Canada um the Canadian open is being played and we’ve got a pair of 63s already in the clubhouse and we have got another man chasing down first round leader still out on the golf course let’s start with Sam Burns Sam burns out of the early wave got off to a hot start Patrick he birdied his first hole of the day that was number 10 he got another in at 12 two circles the double circle the big bird at 17 another big bird on number four so two Eagles on the card he peppers in a couple more birdies does give one back at number three that’s the Par Four added all up to 63 Sam Burns uh has been in a little bit of a Patrick it’s it’s kind of been the West Coast Swing was good to him hasn’t really done much since then yeah I got it I got a text message from uh our very own Greg duch charm today a little uh little uh biting his tongue a little bit he goes did one of us fade Sam Burns this week in the matchups like that thanks Greg that was me um but yeah a little bit of a weird year for him he’s obviously a new father father he has a son named bear I’m not sure if that’s a bear Grill situation definitely not a Bear Bryant situation and probably not the TV show either which uh is bear who’s the most famous bear the old Alabama coach Bear Bryant I think what about uh girls is up there Winnie the Pooh is a pretty famous bear ye yeah but that’s not his name oh okay or is Winnie is Winnie a dude Winnie kind of sounds like it could be a girl name well Winnie Cooper this is you are way too young for this uh Winnie Cooper was the love interest in Wonder Years right that is over my head yeah you’re I mean it’s it’s over my head too but I’ve at least got I don’t know 10 years or you um that’s the only Winnie that I know and she’s obviously a girl so I don’t know what what Winnie the Pooh is okay maybe seems like it’s a girl but maybe would a girl be having her butt out there for everyone to see on a kids network I don’t know I mean she lives in a forest doesn’t she we’re kind of it’s all very irresponsible once we uh once we really dive into winning the Poo H yeah none of it really does add up but a 7 under 63 does add up for Sam Burns uh and this is good to see Patrick he did hoop he did hoop a lot I mean he made basically everything he gained three and a half Strokes putting but he he hit it well so so no no harm no foul yeah definitely hit it great he has the uh the dad beard going on potentially taking a page out of Scotty sheffer’s book this is definitely new 11 Fairways which is always big for Sam Burns he can be a little Wayward off the T I believe he led the field and strokes gain off at least the morning wave and then like you said the approach play was in a really good spot so anytime you can make two Eagles you can Eagle every par five on the golf course you’re gonna shoot something low and he did that today so great start for him he’s played about the Canadian open in the past I believe he said something along the lines of he feels somewhat Canadian because he is an RBC Ambassador oh boy to to which I say I don’t know what I say I’m still processing that because that is man right there that that one really uh put me on my butt I’ll tell you I’m I’m processing still I will only accept that if they if they pay him in Canadian dollars oh that’s the only way I would if he has if he knows what the current exchange rate is uh then he can he can take that otherwise that is Maly I think it’s around 75 if I had to guessed um but company man Sam Burns willing to give up his uh citizenship potentially for this win so you got to like that as well what did you think it was1 dollar equals what what was your guess um one Canadian dollar equals you said zero 75 one Canadian dollar is0 75 us pretty good guess 73 at the moment okay yeah good job not bad speaking of honorary Canadians guys that feel a little bit Canadian how about the 2011 winner sha O’Hare a 63 and as you can probably imagine four and a half Strokes gained with the putter though he did gain in the other three categories as well he looks um he actually looks good for his age he’s been around for a long time the highlight of his round was the eagle that he made on 17 the par five despite currently being the clubhouse leader uh despite being a pass Champion here if you want to know what Vegas thinks about his staying power he is currently 40 to one H shame no faith in the 41y old which I probably would have taken the over on to tell you the truth just based on how long he’s been around and it’s got Touch of Gray in the beer but definitely a pretty cool story only got in the field because Davis Riley withdrew didn’t get to the golf course until I believe yesterday late wasn’t able to play a practice round his caddy was able to scout a couple days there so really playing with house money he’s played somewhat well at like corales and I think you made the cut in Myrtle Beach so those alternate field events but nothing to uh to this effect so cool to see but I unfortunately do agree with Las Vegas where like a 74 tomorrow in the afternoon would it be the the most surprising thing in the world yeah I don’t know what his um I guess I could find out what his status situation is but he’s only played I’m assuming because he can only get into these four events Myrtle Beach Zurich corales and Puerto Rico so he’s basically only played those fields also the reason that he’s it feels like he’s been around forever uh is because he has he turned Pro how about this during his senior year of high school when he was 17 I didn’t know that yeah that’s pretty good he is a p he’s in on pass Champion Beyond 150 so that runs out uh this year okay so big uh big 54 holes for him 24 years so 2000 he turned Pro yeah technically 99 dang well good for him I always remember uh what was it the API with the tiger those two battling yes I also think I thought he lived outside of pH am I confusing him with somebody I thought he was a Westchester guy which is like outside Philadelphia I thought he grew up kind of where I did but everything I see is loic so maybe I’m confusing him with somebody else used to spank him in in junior golf no I kind I kind of uh I pulled him with Chad Campbell a little bit those two always seemed to intertwine for me even though Campbell was a world class flusher back in the day world class flusher meet Rory maroy and this was a tale of two nines for Roars nine pars going out he started on the back nine so 10 through 18 nine pars add him up that’s out in 35 then the patience paid off Bird’s at 1578 to get in with a bogey free four under round of 66 and Patrick I probably should have mentioned this at the top the Golf Course Hamilton playing uh about a stroke over par so if you were even par on Thursday you picked up Strokes to the field if you were four under you picked up nearly five Strokes to the field you gotta love where you’re at if you are Rory mroy little hung over this morning he called it quote grogi celebrating Harry Diamond’s birthday birthday last night I know the uh Northern Irishman can throw it back maybe one glass too many of the voo and you see it on the scorecard nine straight pars hadn’t seen this part of the golf course the newly renovated part didn’t get to play The Back N in practice didn’t play too much coming into this week went to Italy Italia for a wedding I believe Pizza I don’t know I just made that up that’s yeah then he went to Northern Ireland hung out with family hit a 100 Balls he said off the tea wasn’t great today had had the right miss going a number of times which is uh seems new for him but it was there only hit six out of 14 Fairways six out of 14 Fairways got a couple lucky breaks patience like you said and then he gets it going four under only three back doesn’t birdie either of the par FES doesn’t drive the ball great hit his irons fantastic wedges looked really sharp so if you’re Rory ma you’re like man a little bit hung over didn’t see this nine my greatest weapon the driver wasn’t really where it usually is and I’m only three Strokes back of sha O’Hare of David skins come on that’s a neck son I’m I’m gonna win this tournament again [Laughter] that’s pretty funny uh yeah no I agree I think I think this is uh often times Rory gets the least out of his rounds a lot of great players do that right you know he shoots a 66 oh could have been a 63 you we say it about Scotty all the time we say it about Rory we say it about John Ram the greats tend to do that this felt like the most he could have gotten out of it you know didn’t didn’t really use his weapon like you mentioned didn’t get off to a good start uh golf course was playing difficult and now the leaderboards the leader board’s kind of opening up nicely for him yeah I think this is about as good as it gets and it and it’s aged well since he tapped in on nine end his round he’s yeah he is in if leading after 18 is A1 this is a A2 pretty much for him yeah don’t Peak on Thursday do that do that on Sunday other notables uh out of the early wave just very very quickly here I’ll I’ll uh run through Ryan Fox four under he got off to a good start Joel Damon Zack Blair M mner addc all in at uh three under we’ll hopefully talk more about those guys if they continue to work their way up the leaderboard we are going to turn our attention to the afternoon wave we have a guy uh currently out on the golf course right now who has a chance to steal the first round leader away from everybody else but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners the biggest stage in European football is set get ready for the UEFA Champions League final with we need to talk on CBS and streaming live on Paramount plus and we’re back uh Patrick are the are the old guys coming for us this week uh sha oare 7 under 63 David skins who we haven’t even talked about yet who I’ve teased a couple times he’s 42 how about Ryan Palmer 47 uh has carded a bogy free 65 he is five under par he’s just two shots off the current lead a couple more too Mike we was the top Canadian for a while there he shot two under David Hearn he’s three under as well I I also kind of throw Campbell Hearn O’Hare kind of the same golfer for me and and Hearn he hasn’t played on the PJ tour since the fall so up for the challenge this week he shoot three under Ryan Palmer had the home game last week Colonial didn’t work out putting it to the test this week and uh you know he only hit six Fairways but the irons were were in a really good spot today and he’s always been a pretty good ball Striker three under 67 for Aaron Ry this was solid throughout the bag which Aaron Ry has been he’s been solid throughout the bag for a while now seventh off off the te small Gainer on approach end around the green picked up another stroke uh plus some with the putter I love his game love it I I don’t know why he doesn’t contend more frequently well he doesn’t make enough putts Rick oh okay he only missed one Fairway today which is his game super accurate he is kind of like a uh I don’t want to put the Corey Connor’s designation on him but kind Cory Conor so not not as good of an iron player but he’s played 82 PGA Tour events um okay zero wins obviously zero runnerup finishes one third and that includ yep and that includes that’s included in his three top fives so three top fives and seven top 10 in 82 starts I don’t know it feels like he’s better than that well what’s crazy is he is on the DP World Tour he won the Scottish open that’s true when it was in October he beat Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff during the co year he just finished runner up this past year at the BMW PGA Championship which had all the names that’s their big event yeah yeah so he does very well over there in all those what do they call them the Rolex Series yeah and is in his defense I mean he finished seventh in Houston and fourth at the Byron Nelson over here as well so it’s not it’s not like he’s it’s not like I’m making it sound like he’s missing the cut every single week but I I don’t know I just really like his game I just I just don’t know why it’s he’s not in it more like he’s never it’s he’s always like a Thursday Friday guy like I want him in it I want him in it on the weekend okay maybe this is it rick maybe he does it for you maybe he’s tuning in right now he’s going with the post round stretch he’s got the physio getting this little thing out of his thigh right now that kind of caused him trouble down the stretch he’s turning on the first cut he’s go oh my God Rick gamon just said I need to get in it this weekend yeah why haven’t I done that before I know I know yeah all these yeah all these guys are are listening to the first cut after their rounds I’m I’m sure of it um two guys out on the golf course right now and these are two guys that have first round leader implications and I do wonder about their staying power let’s start with the six under par Robert McIntyre so he is six under through 16 holes he has a 35-footer for Birdie on eight his second to last hole of the day that’s a part three um assume he makes par there he’ll go to the ninth at at six under uh he has been lighting it up on and around the greens he’s gained like five Strokes in the short game categories but he’s hitting it well um he’s doing he’s doing enough he’s driving it far he’s 20th in distance he’s 29th in accuracy Bobby Mack is in it your guy hashtag good pick knock on wood so far knock on wood um yeah he’s kind of he’s taken a little bit we we talk about a lot of these guys taking a step after the Ryder Cup it’s taking a little bit more for him he also had to deal with moving over to the United States I think he’s by himself and you saw it there with a lot of miscuts where Strokes named home life wasn’t really translating to the golf course or perhaps it was a little too much and recently ever since the Zurich Classic I’m not too sure who he partnered up there with Martin lard oh boy I’ll find out say Martin T8 there played well at the M Beach Classic had a chance to win that tournament as well and then all of a sudden you’re like holy crap this guy didn’t have a real chance to win the PGA Championship the last day but he was there he was in the conversation what the third group out something like that with Justin Rose finished te uh inside the top 10 always has had a a really sneaky good major championship record and so the talent’s always been there for Bobby Mack seems like the home life is getting into a really good spot and uh the plays following suit what was your official guest for zurk classic Martin lard final answer Thomas dri oh damn that’s right that’s right Martin L finished almost dead last with Kevin Streelman damn they lost to C Cochran they did they lost they lost to the original Russ bus it lost to a lot of guys it wasn’t pretty the man out there right now now trying to steal those firstr leader tickets from Shan O’Hare and Sam Burns is David skins he has got a 20 fo footer for putt uh wow 20 footer for birdie thank you on seven it is a putt his third to last hole of the day uh so he could roll that in get to eight under then he’s got two more holes to go David skins is knocking the cover off the ball right now pck he’s gained a stroke and a half off the te three and a half on approach he has missed one green he got up and down when he missed that green and David skins is working his way possibly to the Top This is brutal I pride myself in trying to uh figure out guys who aren’t very consistent but they randomly pop up on leaderboards I I always tried to identify those as a good better with hashtag good picks and unfortunately this week I didn’t identify David skins because he does do this every now and again Rick PJ National he was in the mix he held two 54 whole leagues in the span of like a month that’s right um Houston open as well and he acquitted himself there quite nicely the 42y old whoa whoa whoa I thought we were done talking about you know the court and charges I don’t want to hear this acquittal stuff he acquitted himself quite nicely the jury of his peers really respected him for his performance um whoa whoa whoa the verdict is it take it easy bro um but yeah he’s uh he’s a popper right we talked about that that one time poppers guys who just kind of randomly play themselves in there are bigger poppers than other some big ones like a Cameron Champ he’s a big popper he pops the biggest yeah maybe the biggest popper yeah and and I think you could throw David skins perhaps into that category he’s trying out for that team at the moment he’s putting together a pretty good uh pretty good effort a lot of hustle out there a lot of hustle play hashtag team popper um he just made par on seven so he has two holes to go uh we are actually doing a a live show tomorrow in which uh we will be going through live on the network CBS Sports Network it’s at 1:30 PM eastern time and doing a lot of this you know oh who’s moving up the leaderboard who’s moving down real time we’ll have the scorecards we’ll have the leaderboards getting you ready for the broadcast and all that fun stuff but uh I digress we’ll be doing that tomorrow today we’ll be showing you the betting odds which Josh going to do right now Rory mroy three shots off the current lead is the favor plus 260 Sam Burns who is currently tied for the lead plus 360 Tommy Fleet Tommy lad 12 to1 Robert McIntyre 12 to1 David skins 18 Eric Van royan is 22 Aaron Ry is 22 Ryan Fox is 33 um I don’t just real quick Eric Van royan like every model that I ran this week Eric van ran was involved in it like I don’t just I could not shake the guy he’s four under 66 he’s 22 to1 right now his Advanced metrics are a lot better than you think they are he won’t win this because Rory is there and Sam Burns is there and there’s just a lot of things that can happen but I I think we’re gonna get a good a good run here from EVR and it it might it might go on for a couple weeks I like it and and he has the quick turnaround which I always like as well had a really nice fast finish cuz you know what Rick I was also looking at his name and I was like stop making birdies stop making birdies stop making birdies so we could get a better number on the show but 22 I think’s good I think if you want to get really ugly like disgusting talking oh ton of olive Brown in this Martini Cameron young perhaps what under had a nice little up and down there on 18 to sneak into red figures hit the ball great didn’t take advantage of the second part five he almost drove the green on five I believe and made bogy there yeah and so I think uh there’s room for improvement for cam I think he has a Sam Burns type round in him he left a lot out there I I would concur he is 40 to one 40 okay and I will REM I mean again if you are even par you are better than the field on Thursday if you’re one under which there’s a lot of guys that are I mean you picked up nearly two shots just because they’re not currently near the top doesn’t mean they’re not going to be working their way up the board over the course of uh the rest of this tournament I am just kind of looking through and like who’s who can win right like do I trust uh I don’t know who I trust rapael Campos uh I don’t know Jorge Campo sorry I have c a in my search bar right now uh no I think if you if you made me put a bet out there right now Nikolai hogard two under I would take EVR at 22 I like the EVR pick as well I’m worried about it but I I really like the number yeah and I think you can still get pretty similar pre-tournament prices on maoy he was 4 to one you’re not losing a ton there Fleetwood was what like 14ish so if you want to jump in by all means but I uh I I like EVR as well and Cameron young for the sicko crew out there 10:30 a.m. eastern time no 10:30 a.m. Pacific which is 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time The First Cut is going on the network that is CBS Sports Network live with your in progress pregame show slash cut sweat slash whatever you want to call it I don’t care just tune in just turn it on and say oh wow this is great this is fun blah blah blah right all that fun stuff uh then Patrick because I used to have a roommate who used to say money never sleeps because money never sleeps what was his job uh he was selling cars at the time so like he was a car dealer so yeah I I had a roommate with a pretty similar saying it was money talks they’re churning right now they’re churning they’re churning like the like the churn rate Sheamus powers in the churn did you uh oh man have you ever seen Mad Max you ever seen those Mad Max movies I’ve been uh weirdly enough they’ve been brought up to me like numerous times within the past month I’ve have not seen them okay Fury roads awesome uh we just saw the new one that came out uh okay furiosa so I don’t get a lot of the like I guess it’s like it started as a comic book I don’t get a lot of like the references and like all that stuff but it was dude it’s just like action movies where just like Fury Road is sick we’re men we’re simple creatures just blow stuff up yeah we’re men we don’t need a plot we just need explosions right we’re just innocent men have you ever seen that
