David Justice speaks on the decline of black players in MLB | All Facts No Brakes

so once upon a time you know obviously I played baseball and growing up in here in Los Angeles I saw the likes of Eric Davis Chile Davis Daryl Thomas Chris Brown not that Chris Brown Kean um I don’t know darl strawberry yep and a host of others just to name a few black players American black players but we don’t see a whole lot of American black players in the major leagues today opening day it was only 6% record historical low for American black players to be playing in the in the major leagues how can that get fixed and changed so we could get back to having more American baseball players out on the diamond okay so to your point that Atlanta Braves team that went from worst to First in 1991 I think we had eight or nine African-American players on our team we had Terry pton at third base we had Brian Hunter who also played first base for us we had me Wright Deion Sanders and Otis Nixon in Center Ron ganton left we had Marvin Freeman in the bullpen and I think we might have had Dwayne Henry we had Keith Mitchell on the bench we had eight or nine brothers on the team that’s unheard of the the Cincinnati Reds had a lot of brothers St Louis Cardinal had a lot of brothers Cincinnati Reeds had a lot of brothers with more shot as right they had a lot of brothers so so so the question is that anybody would be asking is is well where’ all the brothers go so I think there’s there let’s let’s talk about that one basketball and football have done such a great job of making their Sports so sexy and if you in the hood all you need is a football all football growing up I was in the hood in baseball all everybody I just named grew up in my area but baseball was like okay I don’t know baseball was it for us we’ll come at that angle then we’ll come at it from that side so there’s this thing called travel ball that came about travel ball you guys was build as um like aaou basketball type of thing but what you don’t understand is it cost a lot of money to play travel ball as soon as you talk start talking about a baseball bat cost $400 you got to have a glove I don’t know what it cost now you got to have spikes you got to have baseballs you got a lot of things you need yes in order to play baseball and if you don’t have the family don’t have the money but I just need a basketball I can go out here and grab that basketball right there and we can go hoop all day we we get a Nerf football cuz I play football too Kean Nerf football reg we’ll play with a little bitty football yeah that you get at Walmart it just to play football baseball I think once travel ball came in and travel ball then so then here’s what happened with travel ball Kean it would be all the all the white kids that can whose parents because there’s white kids that that that are left out as well because every not every white kid is not affluent it’s uh you know so you got all the white kids that whose parents can’t afford it they’re playing travel ball yeah and then they’d always go get one brother King griffy Junior I’m from Cincinnati bro so I’m King griffy Jr is three years younger than me Barry Lin is two years older King griffy Jr played for Midland I think he was only brother on the team they they go get the one brother out out the the neighborhood uhhuh who can play and a lot of times they sponsor him not kingri Jun but they’ll sponsor him but they’ll have one so that’s what has happened Kean is because it’s become so expensive Brothers just go play basketball and then another thing too in high school all of y’all went to high school Friday Night Lights football is packed it’s live yeah basketball the the the gyms are packed go to a high school baseball game man I got like my parents and it’s 15 people my parents 14 parents and one girlfriend I was about to say if you had a girlfriend probably your girlfriend one one girl nobody’s at high school baseball games couple Scouts so it’s it’s not sexy it’s not sexy playing golf now might be sexier in high school than than playing baseball yeah baseball baseball has become expensive especially for inner city kids no question about it so but but so we know this those are facts but why isn’t Major League Baseball though okay well well well so they build facilities in Venezuela yeah Puerto Rico Dominican Republic they build facilities for underprivileged Latin kids which which is absolutely great that they do because they’re giving them an opportunity uh that they would not have because of their financial means and and we see a lot of Latin players come to the major leagues and ball out why can’t you do that state side though why can’t you put facilities in LA or and fund them put something in the South put something you know I mean put them you know strategically around the country and provide an Avenue for us to play like you do in these other countries well Kean that’s be simple to do right see feels that way right unless you really don’t want to do it yeah unless you really don’t want to do it yeah because it wouldn’t be that hard that b baseball got a lot of money and and and write offs I mean they got to find write off somewhere so if you’re not doing it it’s because you don’t want to do it and why don’t you want to do it well we can make it very Elementary is obviously you just don’t want us to to play you don’t want us to be a part of it and now with the money being so astronomical so does major so David does Major League Baseball view do they view the the Latins with the darker skin not black do they view that and say we rather put the money into that than the actual communities that’s underserve in America where black players can learn how to play baseball you know what Kean I can’t I can’t go out on a limb and say that’s what they’re thinking but we can make it very it’s very simple if you’re able to go across the seas and and build facilities and dorms over that far away why can’t you just go right around the corner over here and do it right here you see mhm because the because the the Latin players which and and I and and I say this seriously I’m happy that they have built these facilities for them yeah I’m very happy man oh yeah you know what I mean I this is this is no knock against any any of the Latin players I thank God they they’ve given you the opportunity but they can do that same opportunity here Kean and it it would and it wouldn’t even be hard to do so why don’t you do it why don’t you put the money behind it why don’t you fund it mm cuz you don’t obviously don’t want to do it cuz who’s keeping you from doing it who what other what other source out there is keeping Major League Baseball from doing this who’s above who’s above the commissioner no who nobody nobody nobody at all so right so you’ve made the decision that you know we’ll give Jackie Robinson his day every year you know what I mean and we you see man come on bro no I we absolutely hope you enjoyed this video if you want more from us hit that 1. You don’t have to play travel ball to get noticed by the scouts. We could not afford travel ball. Instead, I took videos of my kid playing high school baseball, he then made it into a recruiting video and then sent it to a bunch of colleges and universities. Out of about 20 colleges one responded and offered him a partial scholarship. He went on to play D1 baseball at this particular college and he was eventually drafted and is now playing minor league ball. If There’s a will there’s a way, it appears that many of the American black athletes gravitate towards football and basketball because as David Justice said, it’s the more sexy sports. That probably doesn’t have anything to do with color or socio economic status, it’s probably more of the fun sports to watch. You really have to love baseball to practice every day at baseball because it can be sort of boring.

  2. I think the idea that the MLB does not want black players is ridiculous. More black players, especially the star players, would grow the sport. They definitely can grow the game at the pewee and High School level. I'm from LA and live right across the street from one of the top pewee baseball fields in the city which has 3 separate Baseball fields. During the week the fields are packed and most of those players and the people in the stands are black. Things might be changing.

  3. I grew up in Tampa and we had Belmont Heights, won little league world series. Back then, baseball was on par with football. Plenty of kids played. Later on, basketball became more popular. Thats it. The traveling circuit deal baseball like soccer, feeder for colleges. The kids that played there were subsidized (Belmont Heights). My family was obsessed with baseball and I was totally exposed to it. I worked in a bank in Bradenton and each year the Pirates farm team banked with us. Each season, they would bring in the players to open accounts and the overwhelming majority were Latin/Dominican. 4 years running. Not by accident. MLB wants latin players. If you don't believe me, check out the rosters of the affiliates.

  4. David Justice’s suggestion on MLB creating facilities to play in America like in latin countries has 1 flaw:

There’s a draft in America. There’s no international draft.

    A draft dis-incentivizes teams from building facilities…

  5. Dude that's because they don't like baseball, the sport is too slow and the hard fact is that baseball is hard to make college, minors

  6. Everyone has an opinion about this issue. All I no is the there no short cut in baseball basketball football. Either ur good or ur not ! Simple and plain

  7. back in the 60's/70's when I was a kid living in DaHood, we grew up on willie mays, hank aaron, roberto clemente etc. we did not have the money to buy baseball equipment, but through the thoughtfulness of the the late Bill Vecck who owned the white sox, every year they would have bat day, glove day, and ball day. Mr Vecck believe in the inner city and those days gave us the opportunity to save our money and we would go to comiskey park on those days to get our equipment. We shared our gloves with the other project kids who played baseball, pooled our money to buy catcher's gear etc. We need to have MLB have those kinda days again.

  8. keyshawn! takes some tips from club shay shay and let ur guest talk!!! DJ could've said some real nice jewels if hadn't kept interjecting mid speech.

  9. What they didn't touch on is the fact that little league/rec baseball has been diminishing since the early 80's.

  10. Dave Justice 💯💯 told the absolute truth. I umpire baseball and I see it too. I was one of those kids that was sponsored in 1987

  11. The MLB facilities built in the latin countries are only available to signed players. It’s not for the kids in the hoods. Also HS baseball is free. In the Bronx MLB have built a couple of fields and after the grand opening, hardly anyone uses it.

  12. my friend has his son playing little league baseball. the kid is no doubt good. now coaches are hitting him up for travel ball. the costs is ridiculous. he can only afford to put him in one or two tournaments for the season.

  13. i think mlb is investing in latin america for the same reason why manufacturing companies do the same. CHEAP LABOR. they can pay those kids pennies. yes a handful will make hundreds of millions of dollars. majority WONT make it. so there is no real loss.

  14. Black american players gravitate towards football and basketball….because they know if they get drafted theyre playing in the show right away and getting paid ..no minors. Black people need their money NOW they dont have time to waste in the minors for 7 years.

    – Travel Ball is expensive but the biggesf issue is the travel ball environment….most of the teams are the daddy ball little league team n they started their own team.
The other issue is its uncomfortable being the only black kid on a team.

  15. I remember when Pittsburgh had a lot of Black Players. In fact the national league had lots of Blacks. Everybody but Boston.

  16. Yeah you can have a Nerf football and go dribble a bball anywhere, you can also get a whiffle bat with some whiffle balls.

  17. I think they should build ball fields for American kids but Also these facilities in other countries don’t have laws about children and how they’re treated. They don’t have laws when it comes to schooling and how often they can play ball.
