‘This tournament deserved a finish like that’: McIlroy reflects on Taylor’s Canadian Open win

Rory McIlroy has fond memories of playing in Canada as he came away with the win at the RBC Canadian Open in 2022. McIlroy spoke on the importance of Nick Taylor’s win last year.

Rory what do you remember about last year’s uh final hole I don’t know where if you saw it live or if you were flying at the time or wouldn’t you what are your thoughts about that putt yeah I was on my way to the gulf uh sorry I was on my way from the golf course to the airport and I listened to it on the radio so I heard the call on the radio which was um like full disclosure I was hoping Tommy would get his first PJ to win but um Nick had other plans uh but yeah just absolutely incredible the fact that you know a Canadian hadn’t this National open in 60 something years um and the way that Nick did it you know that that pot at the end um the scene like just all of it the the celebrations Adam hadwin getting absolutely Smoked by the security guard like just all of it was was incredible and um this tournament deserved it in all honesty you know it deserved a finish like that because of not just what had happened at the start of the week last year but also what had happened the week or the year previous as well um it deserved a finish like that and I’m you know even though Tommy didn’t win I was so glad that it that it did end the way it did first and foremost I love playing here I love playing in Canada I love playing in front of the fans um I also think to support RBC and what they’ve done for the PJ tour and the game of golf and um I think that’s a really important part of it as well you know they uh you know RBC SP title sponsor two events one signature event One National open um you know so they’re a really important part of of the tour in terms of from the from the sponsorship side but also from you know trying to um I guess grow the game in Canada and and support you know players on the tour but also support amateur golf here as well so um you know I think that’s that’s an important piece to it too you talked about the crowds here how does the Canadian Fan Experience and support for you compare to other stops on the PGA tour yeah um full disclosure here and this isn’t probably a good thing to s in Canada but I’ve never been to a hockey game uh but I’d imagine that that’s sort of what it feels I it feels like you’re playing in that sort of hockey environment especially with the Ring cool so um yeah it’s just more of a I don’t know I you know I’m very very fortunate that I I feel like I get good support most places that we that we go to play but but it’s it’s just for whatever reason it’s um it’s just a little bit extra here in in Canada
