needs to be said we have the 2024 PGA Champion with us Xander chafl congrats how does that sound to you it’s nice has a nice ring to it you look like your your shoulders are down a little bit like something jumped off your back feeling pretty good I’m guessing huh yeah yeah no yeah yes big monkey off the back um hard hard to describe it’s been you know I’ve been removed couple days now still wake up pretty happy um still tired and I’m I’m I’m not really sure if it’s all sunk in yet but it’s uh it is nice to wake up and you know when I walk around the corner I’m like oh good morning you got a trophy wife and a beautiful big trophy next to you now which is fantastic I hate to give your man Austin Kaiser any credit at all you know me and him like to go at it pretty good but we were on the range at Hilton Head a about a month ago and I told him I had to go do this CBS preview show of the PGA Championship I got to make a prediction and looked at me and he goes it’s zoa Fairways a Big Boy golf course we a lock I said that’s good enough for me and I went with it so shout out to him for making me look somewhat intelligent on CBS oh my gosh now we’re GNA take the recommendation of every caddy going forward who always pick their guy so oh my God it’ll end up I know that hurts you to say that on this podcast right now it did it really did but I saw he he did an interview and he actually said that that when that moment happened so uh shout out to him yeah he did what a call what a call let’s let’s go through that final round because obviously you started off with the course record it was incredible you’ve been playing great for several for for a very long time but just haven’t been able to cross the finish line take us through like that the night Saturday night Sunday morning what were the emotions like heading into that final round yeah I mean I was it was actually coming off Quail I you know I had I’ve been in the hunt a lot and so Quail was just the week before and you know I came up short so I actually had some sort of idea of how I was going to feel at night how I was going to sleep what my thoughts were going to be and I think actually that helped me a lot just being in contention the week before and yeah I mean I I felt uh you know wait once I saw actually you know Lowry and a few other guys shoot nothing on Saturday I was like you know with the weather we didn’t know it was supposed I was like is the sun G to come up is the course going to dry out how’s this going to play out and you know Larry almost shoots 61 on Saturday so I was like the course isn’t firming up and there’s not that much wind so going into Sunday I I remember at kind of at at night on even on Saturday I was like this is this is going to be not a shootout but like I’m gonna have to put my foot down here like I need to I need to get going like I can’t there’s been times in on Sundays where I’ve sort of sat back and I wanted the round to sort of come to me and I wanted to be like patient and calm and I was all those things this last Sunday but I had this sort of goal in mind to get every putt to the hole to start you know tighten up the the even from 225 yards like aiming at the flag if you can because if you do hit a good shot you’re rewarded for it so I think there’s a certain mindset of aggression that I came in with uh just knowing that I had to shoot something low to win yeah and you mentioned quill Hall the week before Xander like you you slept on the lead for virtually like two straight weeks every single round more or less how much more stressful if at all is it for you to to lead a a major championship wire to wire as opposed to trying to chase does it feel different like it when you’re off the course you thinking about it yeah absolutely absolutely I mean every shot just feels so important when you’re in the lead you know uh you just you feel like you want to protect the lead you want to increase the lead you know everyone there’s a huge Target on your back so I mean it’s different it’s definitely you know probably more stressful than if you’re just chasing you know you kind of are like you know hopefully I catch fire early I I shoot something low and I I I have nothing to lose because I’m chasing and when you’re leading you’re like I have everything to lose because you know I’ve I’ve been in this circle before and it hasn’t gone my way so this is just going to add to the pain if I don’t make this thing happen yeah you had a great front nine there on Sunday but couple groups ahead Victor hin Bryson D shamble were making massive moves how aware of you with what was going on out there were you watching the leaderboards yeah I mean I’ve done it all uh I’ve literally tried everything you know not winning for two years you start to do some weird stuff so you know I’ve done like the whole I’m not going to look at the board until late I’ve done the whole like I’m not going to look at the board at all I’ve done the whole I’m only going to look at the board on the back nine um I’ve done the whole like I’m going to peek at the board I just I didn’t know how I want to do it so this time around I was like I’m gonna look at every board I’m gonna embrace it I really wanna I just was like I just want to take everything on the chin this week like if I get nervous I get nervous but I just want to see where I’m at I want to be able to embrace the moments where I’m at and really control the situation to the best of my ability because I felt like I was playing good golf so uh that’s what I did I looked at the board I saw I mean I missed I made bogey on 10 and I went to 11 and I thought I was going to be in tied first and it said I was in second and I was like damn so I was like I need to I need to get have just laid the ball up on 10 no no I would have bumped my chip I just I just would have like hit a 56 or 60 to the left and it would have rolled down on the green and I would have taken like uh I think the closest I could have gotten if I bumped it cuz there was a sprinkler head in my way was like I don’t know 12 feet 15 feet maybe but like it was always going to be a par and like let’s say I bumped it and it didn’t go far enough I just put it on the green so like five was when I went up with it I knew six was going to be a thing just because all the runoffs are so down like into the grain it’s kind of awkward Austin wanted you to flop it is what you’re saying wink twice makes total sense that was the only hiccup that was the only hiccup of the day you drop there you say you go get up to 11:00 look at the leaderboard like oh I’m down one was there any like pump up talk or any selft talk to yourself or with Austin at that point are you guys like beyond that you’ve been there done that yeah we’re we’re beyond that I mean I told I told a I mean I’m usually the one that has to calm Austin down you know what I mean um it’s it’s rare for a player to have to calm his caddy down in tough moments but I I have to do that it’s like a bit of a a double rooll for me but no I’m just kidding I iy my arm around Austin out at some point like on the front line when we closed up or maybe not my arm around it but I was like let’s get to 22 is what I told him you know I was like let’s get I birdied nine and I felt pretty good and I was like let’s get to 22 like I think 22 is GNA be enough and I just wanted to keep pushing for I like I knew I was going look at the board but I knew I needed to set my own goal because I needed to keep pushing forward and not react to what everyone else was doing and of course I go on bogey 10 and I was like son of a yeah 21 21 will be good let’s just let’s just make another birdie yeah well I mean you handled yourself so well coming down the stretch but we got to ask about 18 I mean you hit the t-shot and it ends up I mean just a foot out of the bunker you got to be thinking like what the hell do I have to do just to like be able to cruise in and get this thing done yeah I mean it went to it like started on 17 even I or even on 16 I hit this really good drive and there’s like mud on the front top right of it and I’m like I got an 8 iron in my hand and like I know I’ve been hitting it good so if there’s no mud on this thing I was like I’m going to if I hit a good eight iron I can hit this to tapen if I if I hit a solid eight iron I’ll have like 15 18 feet you know and then I had to play to the fat side to like 30 40 feet and I was like this is brutal and I get to 17 and I I take an aggressive line and I hit it hard enough I just didn’t hit it high enough because of the the elevation there and it hits the lip of the bunker and bounces back and I was like you know if it just flies like another foot it would have I would have had like a a really good birdie look again and then so I was like all right weather the storm weather the storm like no one said it was going to be easy and I get to 18 and Austin like you know it’s 3 317 into the left bunker like winds off the right so I was like okay if I cut it and swing kind of smooth I shouldn’t get there and obviously I’m sure I was more jacked up than I thought I was ends up like you know right where it was so you I get there and luckily the bunker wasn’t too it was a flatter bunker so it wasn’t like too crazy where I’m just basically showing hosle the whole time so I’ve hit that shot back in San Diego a few times where uh you know every go C you know I mean you’ve had that lie at some point in your career where your ball doesn’t go in a bunker and you’re sitting there like an idiot like trying to hit your shot so I get there and I just I knew I knew I could Advance the ball uh Austin talked me into going a little bit more left versus right he thought that up and down would be easier and luckily that ball ended up in the Fairway and like not in the bunker there uh that left bunker because that would have been a hard one still it takes some massive stones to hit four iron on the 72nd hole of a major Champion you know with a lie like that that was that was impressive I was nervous for you I was on the range with Bryson and we were watching it on the I’m like oh dear God this could go terribly wrong right now with water short I mean yeah that’s so easy to like just lose your footing or something Johnson Wagner I don’t know if you saw he went out there and recreated the shot and didn’t have quite as much success as you and he had hybrid my buddy sent me a my buddy sent me a clip of of Johnson I mean bless him he’s been a highlight reel himself huh it has been the chip just a fantastic disaster the chips the chips are all World it might be my favorite thing that’s happening on television right now to the point where I’m like watching the rounds like you’ll hit a shot and I’m be like that’s the one that’s the one make Johnson go hit that one like I’m like I’m trying to pre-plan it I’m like do that yeah we need to find the next time someone hits a sick flop yeah we need like a long bunker shot like a 40 yard bunker shot no he he has been been great well you you had a really good chip under the situation you got six feet there below the hole I know you said you went back and forth on which way you thought it was going to break but like I I remember Max hom at the Ridder cup saying the putt he had to for his match on the last hole like his whole body was shaking he said he felt like he had 50 cell phones taped to them that were all vibrating what were what were you feeling like going over that putt to win your first major yeah I was I was nervous I mean I was I was shaking like my hands were my hands were like they were I was you know it wasn’t it wasn’t great uh and I I just I told myself yeah I saw like a weird thing one I was really happy that chip is not easy for some but for me like I kind of like to Breeze through my chips and so like to hit this like divot down like punch shot was I it was like a out ofx body I was like just freaking smoke this thing kid you know what I mean um and then that putt yeah I saw left Edge at first then I was like this could be right Edge and then I ended up playing it kind of straight uh I pulled it it started a little left and then you know lipped in but my hands were shaking I just told myself like big muscles stop breeding this thing like so much let’s let’s just hit this and commit to it the longer you look at this don’t call Austin in like let’s not get all these opinions and freak yourself out like I just I didn’t want to sit there and like psych myself out about you know an pill six foot putt I was like just keep it simple you’ve done this all day just smoke this thing and I made it any little selft talk right before you hit like you have to no I don’t care who you are they say like stay in the moment but you got to know like this is this is what I’ve done my this my whole life’s been leading up to this like this is the moment Chang yeah I mean you are so much stuff is racing through your head I mean I was I was sitting there I was like you make this you win you make this you change your life this is what you want this is what you’ve wanted your whole life I was like change your life like let’s do this and I remember I just like kind of like I was thinking so much crap while I was like w like going through my routine that’s why I was like the longer I take to the more stuff I’m G to think so I was like just let’s get this thing in the house do you think you’ll feel more comfortable around Dody pepper now gotta love ddy not today not to the amount of people that asked me sent me tweets texts that said what did Xander say to you because I started dying laughing and I was like dude it was such an a like I want to make t-shirts that say not today Dy and you host holding the the water maker I think it’d be a fantastic t-shirt incredible she texted me too I mean it’s it’s so we D and I we’ve come a long way we’ve come a long way since qu last year I mean she’s she’s been through the fire with me God bless her God bless her she loves this too and by um is sitting now like the monkeyy off her back too this is a big day for her she’s probably like like you got Xander get in the final Jesus I want you know I want him to win now she may be the good luck charm she gave you the biggest du of your career no she is not saying she’s got one major I’m like less on like the I’m not as like you know I’m more of like track record you know Colts like Colts been concrete through a lot of moments you know you found my ball Tor it all started there got like a 66 scoring average was pretty good Scotty doesn’t want anymore he did break Scotty gave him the one bad round of his last like year oh yeah I had everything to do with that the man was in prison look at him go that’s all you got to say I mean it was a wild week give us your thoughts real quick on Scotty and everything that happened with him I it was obviously a very unfortunate situation with the fatality but him having to go through that I mean you’re you’re you’re close to a lot of the guys I mean you know Scotty fairly well he’s he’s a good dude I mean he’s like he is there is not a bad bone in that guy’s body to to where he would want to hurt anybody or anything you know uh the only thing he hurts is a golf ball and other competitors feelings most of the time but that’s like that’s literally the extent of the damage Scotty sheer is capable of doing like he’s solid guy all around I thought it was a prank it wasn’t and I it sounds like based on what I’ve read he’s going to come out unscathed hopefully and you know hopefully everyone’s hopefully everyone on both sides of that of the parties are are okay with what happened and we can move on you know in a peaceful manner yeah but I I I was listening to pardon my take earlier you went on with the boys and they asked if y’all did have a little fun with him because y’ y’all do have a group chat with your with your physio marus yeah who was the uh who was the harshest on him or who who had the most fun with Scotty it was like I mean you know we got some hitters on the table it was I mean yeah JT Jordan you know those boys it was like it was a fun poke it wasn’t like a mean poke it was like it was fun I mean the mug shot was posted you know and then like the you know someone changed the name of the group chat like please make it tomorrow Scotty or something like that I mean I can’t we kept it like we kept it relatively light like most of us were in there and we’re trying to think of something really creative and we we just couldn’t get there so and we wanted to like you know we wanted to like be peaceful and then Scotty is so when when he’s with us he’s so chill you know like if our table makes one of them he’s fine but like if someone else makes one of them he’ll kind of look at him like you can’t say that you know what I mean so Sky’s awesome in that way well I heard um after you made the putt on the 72nd hole to win your first major the group Chang name the group name changed once again who’d you hear that from I got sources everywhere you don’t have to say it if you don’t want to but thought it was rather funny yeah that was more that was Gary Woodland who did that he is hard to believe something else hard to believe he just turned 40 by the way yeah did he really yeah yesterday get him something yeah what would what would you get Gary Woodland if you got him a birthday present man I maybe like uh I don’t even know I mean last time last time we made fun of Gary was he rolled up and some sort of like rolls Roy SUV and we all looked at I’m like it was like white all white and we’re like I was like what’s up Gary so good umbrellas dry themselves you know what I mean like you can press a button there so maybe I’d get him like a custom like Gary umbrella you know that he could stick in his Rolls-Royce side door so when he gets his kid out he could you know I was like I told G I like you’re not supposed to drive these cars yourselves you know that he’s like no no no I’m a chauffeur I drive Jack’s around I was like all right you saved yourself there give him a little umbrella Farnsworth Bentley yeah that’s a little homage I think to his high school days where he had the vour pants with the one leg rolled up and all that it’s still in there you know oh 100% he actually just showed Austin didn’t believe it he showed Austin a photo of him he he had we he’s never going to show this photo to you or on this show but like there’s a photo of him like white tea hiked up like hope you guys can get a hold of it cuz it’s he showed Austin Austin’s like no this can’t be real like Is This Halloween or something no no that was every day that’s real that was just literally every day bless Gabby’s heart what he say like walk with the left and drag the right that was he had the LL he had the LL like Valour like Kangle hats dude he had the whole he had the whole I got one more real question for dud oh 100% there’s no question there’s no question that he had I got one more real question even though I’m pretty sure you’re not a guy that really cares a whole lot what like golf media is saying about you but it’s got to be nice to just kind of put all that to bed like look boys one the big one what do you say now yeah I mean I everyone was you know the media were you know they asked me the question like you know you’re the best golfer that’s never won a major you know and I was like you know it’s funny I like I thought that I thought that before you guys were saying that so like you know cats out of the bag like this this is this is incredible now they can’t you know part of my take was funny they’re like now we can’t talk like about you for like you know you you stole like three four years from us now we go to now exactly we got to pick our next Target yeah exactly so it’s it’s uh it is it is an amazing I mean it’s so much so many things you need to come together to to make it happen and there’s so many good players so many good players that haven’t won one yet that are going to win and uh you know it’s a it’s an amazing feeling that you can share with your team it’s awesome during that winless drought were you a guy like do you do you read the stuff people write about you not really good my wife my wife my wife has she has uh Instagram and like some social media so like she’ll kind of go through some comments and like start reading them and like she started kind of like she’s actually you know she’s asked me like a few questions every once in a while and I would kind of be like that’s sort of like offs script like why would you say that and so then I realized you know maybe she was reading some of the comments you know what I mean yeah yeah but uh what he got like line up I’m sure the last 48 hours has been wild I’m sure you got a lot going forward but like what are some of the highlights of you know winning this thing shows you’re going to go on things like that other than subpar clearly obviously yeah dude I mean you guys I mean you guys know col knows you fairly well now I mean I’m I’m like um if if I could just you know win and then just go home and just hang out with like my crew and like not do anything that’d be like all World y but I don’t you know I haven’t there’s just been media obligations for for time and people want to talk about it and and hear about the experience and all that kind of stuff so I get to live live it you know I forget about it a little bit when I’m just home with my dog you know when you’re when you’re picking up dog you kind of forget about what you’re doing but then you know people will remind me of of the moment they’re on 18 and then I’ll get all you know happy and and reminisce I guess so I’m I’m still living it my man I’m still living it that’s awesome well a lot obvious a lot comes with winning what was a celebration like Sunday night it was it was it was fun we had uh Joe and Dave and and Milo they were there uh they hung back cuz they were leaving on Monday um so they were awesome there to hang hang with I had a friend from New York come down um Chris was with us my brother was there my uncle was there Maya obviously my wife was there it was a small crew it was a small get together you know I ended up finishing up with media around like 9:45 had dinner at the clubhouse one of the members Jimmy was awesome he set up dinner for us there and then got back to the house around 11: and then we just started drinking out of the trophy and uh it was it was pretty pretty lowkey pretty laidback I’m sure when I get to San Diego there’s going to be some more people I want to get dinner together and celebrate um but it was it was awesome to have to have everyone there Joe Joe and Dave weren’t allowed to drink out of the trophy they you know everyone was trying to peer pressure on I look him I was like Joe when Max wins you’re drinking out of that damn trophy yourself yes good for you that’s awesome same thing with Dave obviously with Taylor so uh but it was cool you know I’ve been friends with them for quite some time and play loads of golf with both of them for quite some time so it was it was nice for them to support Austin there and and me as well well I know you want to enjoy this one but we got some pretty big events coming up we got uh memorial memorial coming up US Open Travelers I know you’re going to be playing three weeks in a row like how do you put this one aside obviously I know you want to enjoy it but then get ready to go again yeah I’m like I’m I’m weirdly motivated more you know not that I wasn’t motivated before but you kind of like I think it’s just like a drug you just want to kind of keep having the feeling I mean I’ve I’ve been fortunate enough to I think my favorite feeling in golf is to have to be in the hunt you know regardless of the outcome the result that rush you feel when you’re in contention on coming down the stretch is is my is like why I love playing golf and while love sport in general and uh I’ve had a lot of that feeling which is super fortunate for me so you know the result of winning is obviously awesome but you know getting in the hunt at these big tournaments is is something that’s awesome so hopefully Do’s there uh at moral to KI me off right you just kicking me and Barb to the curve now kidding you and Barb are my day ones grow up that’s right can I and you don’t have to share it if you don’t want to but I’m guessing tiger sent you a message after you won did he say anything special yeah he you know he texted me and you know I think he was right and I mean he’s he’s been through it all himself but you know he texted me something along lines of like you know all those times you were close like I think that hardened you for this moment and you know I’m proud of you like it’s incredible like I couldn’t be more proud more proud of you so that’s awesome that was an awesome text I got from from from Tito that’s awesome well congratulations dude we’re so proud of you the hardening is over yes you are fully hardened give us one more no more hardening needed just a little more context no I’m just saying you’re all the way hard dude you’re as hard as it can be H which is nice that’s a nice feeling it’s early here in Arizon brain’s not quite I’m still in the process of it I’m not there yet but you’re there all right man well seriously congratulations we’re so happy for you maybe just on our way out maybe one more not it but wonder what it could be lot of fun man it’s so cool I’m so happy for him he’s one of my favorites to walk with out there and this major championship was coming uh there was no doubt about that it was like watching it you know we got we know a lot of the guys out there friends with them or whatever but I was like they just he this one’s for him like it’s time he’s earn this he’s been close so many times and watching that putt on him lining up that putt on 18 it was it was cool to get the Insight on like what was going he’s like I saw left Edge left Center then all of a sudden more I looked at it was right Edge Right Center didn’t call in Austin and just hit it and I was like please cuz if this goes to a playoff you know it’s a three- hole aggregate but I’m like Bryson’s got all the momentum in the world he’s thrilled to be there Xander would be pissed off that he’s there he got the terrible break off the te where he could have just sent it up on or near the green if that ball stays out of the bunker more um it was fun to watch him get it done and he put the narrative to B dude done now we got to find the next dude now we go somebody else is going to get crushed now and he’s just 30 years old I mean his career trajectory is just skyrocketing I expect him to win many more he’s one of the few players out there in my mind just he has a complete game there are no weaknesses he does it all great he showed it and I expect him now that he’s got the monkey off his back look out Xander chafl is coming he contends like virtually every week and his major championship record is sickening it’s very very right that he gets one and yeah there’s no Floodgate stuff like Phil took to what what was he 34 when he got one right Sergio took a long time like 30 to get your first major ain’t that long it’s just there’s so many young kids out there now it’s skewing the like standard lower and lower and lower yeah they’re hard to win there’s no doubt but he’s up to number two in the world and just like I said he’s going to keep coming he’s got 13 top 10 and majors in his his career and he has I think he’s played 28 and he’s one of the guys too that’s like you can’t pick there’s certain guys I’m like that’s a US Open guy or or maybe that’s a master’s guy like for him it’s like dude all of like I don’t think there’s a bad spot for him all right well he’s number Louisville not doing golf wise so but I got three days of grind leading up you can’t fix it in three days it can’t be fixed s in my opinion yeah three days is plenty we’ll go get it done we’ll be
