WHICH PUTTER SHOULD YOU PLAY? Blade or Mallet

Which type of putter should you be playing, the Mallet or Blade style?

During this video I’m going to explain the main differences between each design of putter and what you should consider when looking to purchase a new club.

Moment of Inertia (resistance to twist on off center strikes) is massive when it comes to pace control but having a putter that appeals to your eye is equally important. Go through the process outlined in this video to understand more about design and discover which model would be more suited to your game.

what’s up guys welcome to the beautiful Aviara we’re on the puttting green today I’m going to talk to you about the Mallet versus the blade I know this is something that a lot of people struggle on they don’t know where to go they don’t know why to go there this video is going to tell you individual reasons as to why you should pick either one and what you should look for during your testing process as always bang subscribe you don’t want to miss this okay so let’s get into it first off let’s define the Mallet and we’ll start there the Mallet is going to be known by tailor made mainly as the spider it is a much larger Potter with mass at the back I have quite a short length in the Potter here so these are 12 G weights pulling the mass and the CG deeper into that poter it’s crucial it’s important the majority of the weight moves further back let’s keep it simple then you have the real estate on the top which is a great thing when it comes to Potters cuz your eyes are looking to focus on something we see a combination of lines we see a combination of dots with a mallet there can be a lot more going on this has the true path on here which is actually as we look at it going to be the width of a golf ball just narrower than that so it’s like an Infinity pull going off the end so when you do set up to line up your golf ball when you’ve picked the line by having that true path now you have that easy goto line option to just send the golf ball down towards the hole Pace control on a Mallet generally is going to be a little bit easier why is that what do you mean well the mass helps you on off-center strikes and the best way to illustrate this is if I hold the Potter pretty much at it Ben profile point there in the middle and I start to strike it with my finger and it doesn’t have to be hard and I can use a peg for this whatever you fancy but you’ll see focus on the head here it doesn’t twist so much away from the center now it does a little if I get way out here or way out here but it takes a lot and I’m not that’s just in the white true path it takes a lot for that Potter to twist so believe it or not the kingdom has a 12T pot 12 feet the best players in the world aren’t striking those Potters out of the middle so when that’s the case you’re going to be looking for offc Center strikes to still give you speed now let’s move to this brand new flat stick that I’ve picked up the KK Kitty armor reject in the PGA Tour Department it was glinting at me in the corner of the room it looks very much like the big cat’s putter you’ve got some sharp edges that classic Sleek look it tow hangs very differently so now notice if I was stood there before with the Mallet now not all mallets are like this but this particular one with what’s called a double Bend you can see tow hangs with the face going towards the sky and this one actually has a little bit of tow hang that classic look it also has some slight rocker on the sole here camber changes so if I’ve got the ball below my feet that putter is still going to sit pretty good could or if the ball’s above my feet obviously with a larger sole on your spider or your Mallet putter that’s going to sit a little differently yes it’s got perimeter weighting it’s got the rear weighting it has the carbon sole plate so the weight is all pushed to the edge but now all of a sudden I have a Potter that when I put it down generally when you put these down they sit very very Square again I’d push you to challenge you to when you test it just get into the slightly longer pot try and look at it at this region probably 20 ft or further and we’ll go to the further one and I can demonstrate with you that the strike on these now can be a little tough because it’s hard believe it or not as golfers to hit the middle on these longer longer parts so that one was ripped you can see it’s chasing towards the hole the strike was okay but our Pace control as we switch between Putters becomes tougher now so you have to readjust and start to find the new feel if you chop and change between Mallet to Blade you are going to be challenged with different feels so when you test get into the longer one and realize what you can work with the next thing if we go back to our teg test you’re now going to notice that as I strike it away from the center there is a lot of twist yes look if we straight bob out the middle not as much but even out the middle you can get a bit more twist so the response to the player is significant that’s one thing you got to look for as it comes to strike you get more feedback from the blade but the response to off-center strikes can send you in a much wider area when it comes to ball speed which is speed off the poter now there is a third poter in the mixer look at this this is a little bit of tow hang but we’re not talking about that today but as you go from the top of the putter you can see the CG of this one isn’t going to be deep towards the back and it’s not going to be as responsive as the blade towards the front but you are going to have because it is a mid Mallet the CG a little bit different so my release of this putter if I was someone who wanted stability and you can see with the forks in the back here it has stability as you strike it if you’re someone who wants it this is your mid point to go to when it comes to that stability story that you get from the Mallet Potter again I’d challenge you to get the feel see what it is you like about the Potter from distance but notice speed wise again I’ve got the consistency on that shorter part of going with this one now one thing I will suggest and one thing that is crucial to take away from this video Club fitting when it comes to Potters is massive based on that center of gravity projection through the face so if we line the three Putters up here together and we go furthest back CG on the left middle CG in the middle and then I go front CG in the right hand poter I can tell you now the Loft on this poter based on the launch has to be more than this one so this spider is playing at about two and as I get into this you’re looking more at 3.75 that’s a massive amount of difference when it comes to Club fitting yes the sole is much smaller so the face angle is going to sit nice on the green for you but you are able to play far less Loft in this poter which with the pure roll grooves all of these poters have grooves on it’s going to get in Forward Motion quicker which we’ve proven that at the Kingdom but the bottom line is you can’t just walk into a golf shop and say I play 3 and 1 half 4° this is what I do because a mallet requires less Loft than the blade purely for ball launch optimization when it comes to these clubs so where does that leave us where does that put us the summary more forgiving ball speed feedback going to be great on this one for distance control braking pucks feel rapid pace you’re going to want to consider something like a blade plus they do look gorgeous if you’re looking for alignment tools on the top the real estate available in a mallet is going to be massive for you if you’re looking for Pure feel and that sleep classic look then this is probably the route you want to consider or we can go down the middle and have the best of both worlds now what I would say if you travel putting is fickle you play quick greens you play Slow greens you may want to consider one of all three which I know sounds extreme but I’ve talked to you before about a squad of golf clubs and the best players in the world they carry a squad they use different Lofts they check the lofs and lies every single week you should be considering the same for your games so I don’t hate it if there’s players out there that have a blade for certain greens or certain days when they feel that their game is in that place or they use a mallet just to re-trigger the feels of putting to capture back what you need obviously look I’ve had the benefits of being on the tour and I’m able to say that cuz I’ve seen the guys change but you can notice here that I’m getting different responses and different feedback and different sounds from each Putter and one day one thing might trigger with you great and the next you need something else so consider all the options keep your stats keep your clip data however you wish wish to choose it you’re going to tell which one works for you over a period of time and you’ll get better information back if you track that data for your game hopefully you enjoyed this video and it puts a bit more light in it there’s decisions to be made but testing Putters is always a fun process so don’t shy away from it [Music] [Applause]

  1. Great info and advice on what we should be looking for in a putter and why.

The putter fittings have come a long way and I just had one done for my new TM Spider tour. I recommend doing a putter fitting. You find out a lot with the fitting and now I see the benefits. My alignment is so much better and I find myself with more consistency and confidence on the putting green.

    Thanks Trottie

  2. I maybe 3 putt once in a round with a odyssey 100$ mallet so that's good enough for me now…

I did try 500$ blade putters and it's very different indeed.

  3. Answer: what fills you with the most confidence… putting is primarily a confidence skill. If you lack confidence your putting will lack regardless of equipment.
