There are players who transcend their game on the fields and who become true legends who change the history of football. The figure of René Higuita was forged in a time when goalkeepers were only dedicated to stopping, but with his daring and particular style, he ensured that the goalkeepers’ game contributed something more. The "crazy" Higuita will be remembered for his characteristic long hair and colorful uniform, but what stood out most about his game was his ability to play like a "libero", leaving the goal with reckless drives and revolutionizing the position of the players. goalkeepers until changing the rules of the game. And René was a unique goalkeeper, capable of making incredible saves, carrying it in a big way and even giving his name to one of the most famous saves in history. Get ready to meet the goalkeeper who changed the history of football, a madman with gloves and one of the highest scoring goalkeepers in history. Today, in Soccer Memories, we relive the career of Colombian René Higuita. The beginnings of René Higuita José René Higuita Zapata was born on August 27, 1966 in the city of Medellín, Colombia. René’s childhood was very hard. His mother died very young and his father abandoned him to his fate when he was just a child. This caused him to grow up with his grandmother, whom he tried to help by selling newspapers to the neighbors in his neighborhood. With that unfortunate childhood, Higuita was distracted by playing soccer and saw in sports an opportunity to prosper in life. In 1981 he was part of the Antioquia under-16 team and, after becoming national champion, he was called up for the South American team in Paraguay with the Colombian under-19 youth team. René could not play due to injury, but the Millonarios scouts already had him on their agenda to sign him. In the summer of 1985, Higuita began his career at just 19 years old and would play his first 16 games as a professional. He only belonged to Millonarios for one season, although they say it was the one that marked his career forever . There he met the Argentine goalkeeper Alberto Vivalda, who was nicknamed ‘El Loco’ for his audacity when it came to abandoning the goal and dribbling over rivals. After a full year training with him, Higuita became fascinated with his game and was inspired to emulate him in his game. In the summer of 1986 René signed for Atlético Nacional, where he met Francisco Maturana, a coach with whom he would spend practically his entire career and who understood his game better than anyone. The Colombian coach trusted him a lot and gave him the necessary confidence for Higuita to become the team’s libero. His runs towards the center of the field began to become famous and Higuita quickly became a figure in the country. The goalkeeper earned the nickname ‘El Loco’ and during his five seasons at Nacional he also confirmed himself as a consecrated scorer, scoring 21 goals and being a specialist in free kicks and penalty shots. Copa Libertadores champion René Higuita was already an idol in Colombia and became a myth on May 31, 1989. That night Atlético Nacional was crowned champion of the Copa Libertadores and Higuita established himself as the hero of the night after save four penalties and score a goal to decide the trophy. Italia 90 World Cup After that tournament, Higuita became known internationally and managed to be key in the milestone of returning Colombia to a World Cup. The ‘coffee growers’ arrived at the 90 World Cup in Italy after 28 years of absence and did so wanting to be noticed. Maturana’s team played very happy football and Higuita had a spectacular performance during the group stage. He saved a penalty against Yugoslavia and created plays that had never been seen before in elite football. In a World Cup where all defenders gave the ball to the hands of their goalkeepers, René inspired FIFA to change the regulations. In 1992 the ‘Higuita Law’ was created, by which a goalkeeper could not catch the ball with his hands if it came from a pass from his defender. ‘Loco’ baffled fans with his risky way of defending the goal and quickly became the great attraction of the championship. However, in the round of 16, everything would change. The coffee growers lost 0-1 against Cameroon and Higuita’s daring ended in a blunder. The goalkeeper lost the ball while trying to dribble past Roger Milla and the African legend scored the goal that would ultimately eliminate Colombia from the World Cup. La Tricolor lost 1-2 and Higuita went from being praised to being in the eye of all the critics. Inter-American Cup and Colombian League Upon returning from the World Cup, Higuita returned to his club and continued displaying his unconscious and risky game outside the area. Beyond the mistakes, Higuita’s game was based on starting the game and entertaining people, regardless of the risks he took for his team. In 1991 he managed to win the Inter-American Cup and culminated his great season by winning the Colombian league with Nacional. Visit to Pablo Escobar Higuita was once again an idol but in the summer of that same year he made one of the worst mistakes of his life. René went to visit the prison of drug trafficker Pablo Escobar and the press and public opinion attacked him. They labeled him an ally of the mafia and a womanizer, and so much criticism ended up encouraging him to leave the country. He quickly received a call from Maturana, who was training in Valladolid and who wanted to bring him to Spain. In Pucela he met his teammates Leonel Álvarez and Pibe Valderrama, although his career in the League was very short. He did not like the seriousness of European football and Higuita ended up leaving Valladolid in the winter market. Arrest and Loss of the 1994 World Cup The Blanquivioleta team ended up being relegated to second place and René returned to Nacional in January 1992. After completing the qualification for the 1994 World Cup with Colombia, Higuita seemed to have found his place again, but he soon found himself involved in another mess. In the summer of 1993 he was arrested for being involved in a kidnapping case and spent six months in jail where he could not play. Apparently, Higuita mediated the release of the daughter of a banker extorted by Escobar, although he was eventually released. Despite his release, the controversy and his inactivity prevented him from playing in the World Cup in the United States, where Colombia failed miserably. On his return to the playing fields, he won the 1994 Colombian championship with Nacional and reached a new final of the Copa Libertadores, scoring a great goal from a free kick in the semifinals against River Plate. Unfortunately, Atlético Nacional could not win the title, as they lost the final against Gremio de Porto Alegre. The Scorpion at Wembley (1995) Good old René felt liberated and on November 6, 1995 he starred in one of the most unforgettable saves in the history of football. Colombia was playing a friendly match against England at Wembley Stadium and Higuita decided to execute a clearance that had never been seen before. Goodbye to the national team (1999) The ‘Scorpion’ became a registered trademark of ‘Loco Higuita’ and he began to practice it when the opportunity arose. That year he participated in the Copa América in Uruguay, where he offered his last great service to the national team, leading Colombia to third place. He gave up playing in the 1998 World Cup because he was out of shape, although he returned to the coffee growers to appear as a substitute in the 1999 Copa América. In Paraguay he played his last game with the national team against Ecuador, saying goodbye to his international career with 68 games. in which he conceded 54 goals, scored 3 goals and participated in a World Cup and five Copa América. Retirement In his last years his career was chaotic. Between 1997 and 1998, he played for the Red Sharks of Mexico, went through Alianza de Lima and played for up to five Colombian clubs in just four years. In 2004 he tested positive for cocaine in an anti-doping test and, after being suspended for six months, decided to play again. He played in the leagues of Ecuador, Venezuela and returned to Colombia, where he said goodbye to football permanently in 2008 at Deporitvo Pereira. In his entire career, Higuita played a total of 509 games and, one fact worth highlighting is that he scored 43 goals, being one of the four goalkeepers most scorers in the history of football. Already retired from football, Higuita continued to be a character in Colombian society, participating in numerous reality shows and undergoing several cosmetic operations to improve his physical appearance. But beyond his eccentricities, the figure of Higuita transcended the borders of Colombia and became a global soccer icon. His bold style inspired generations of goalkeepers to come out of the box and play with their feet. His spectacular saves and peculiar style leaves an unmatched legacy, being remembered as the ‘Madman’ who made the Scorpion at Wembley, changed the rules of football and challenged the limits of the sport so that millions of fans could have fun with his football.
