Hand Path In The Downswing

*** Full Swing Master Class HERE *** https://fullswingmasterclass.porzakgolf.com/

In this video, Adam teaches you the correct hand path in the downswing. There are two important elements when in comes to the golf swing: the hand path and the swing plane. The hand path is created by the traveling of the hands throughout the swing and the swing plane is determined by the angle of the shaft coming through impact.

now now come down like you’re going to yeah I mean look at that that’s daunting let’s go slow on the way down so watch what I’m going to do to you I’m going to come on down see what I’m doing I held that from going that way so I want you to bring that butt of the club down into that finger there exactly boom exact that that’s more what I want to say right knee is going to stay in one spot and just go right down to the end of my grip with your hands there it is and from there that’s exactly see that’s what I want to see you knock down so it’s like there there and then back underneath here underneath oh yeah get those hands exactly you know cuz think about it like this go ahead and set up you know your hands are here right they should never get outside that point okay so it’s like straight back over and then down the line yep ni that was way better right there yeah way better my hands are just very not used to being in that position no and you know what’s funny it’s like you can do this this feels like I’m coming down inside but it’s and I I want our viewer can I mean to know my body’s tur in this direction everything’s going to want to go that way and there and the golf ball is over there it’s funny how many people swing their hands to the ball as a reaction just because of the fact that the ball’s there and they’re trying to hit it and they forget that wait no no your hands could actually get back to where they started the clubs at an extension view is going to hit the ball so you know another use of the alignment Rod say I have the alignment Rod here my hands are between visually for me between my toes and that alignment Rod well guess what when I go back to the top I’m taking him back down inside that alignment Rod never letting him get outside there so hands will be more down the line here and then back underneath there exactly that was awesome right there dude yeah I mean just so much more on plane there’s a hand path and there’s a swing plane yeah okay the hand path is your hands relative to your body’s turn the swing plane is well where’s the shaft point and I always say where’s the butt of the club Point what’s where’s that going right so you know to me a golfer who’s like this his shaft’s on plane it’s just that his hands are off the the right path right you can be back in here shafts on plane hands are just not in the right path Okay Hand path okay the hands are on the right plane but then I can also have the shaft out there y right this one is great for working on your swing plane and taking care of the golf club itself this one’s great for getting your hands on the right path okay okay that makes sense and you’re on the Range you’re thinking okay well how do I guarantee I get my hands back down where they need to this is what I’m talking about you can put your golf clubs right here I mean you know it’s funny my dad’s hitting golf balls right next to us here but when when he was around I you know I I could use him for this stuff when he wasn’t around I got had to kind of be creative but you know you can weave it through here in a way that right there you’re taller so I got you up a little bit I got you up a little bit more there all right but here’s the thing like look where I am I could hit balls right in here just that visual right there gets it back down there for me it would be you know down here you know I probably put it like right right in that Mech of the woods but you know like watch this I put this right here and I I find my spot to where okay well hey just that visual it’s kind of like eye opening it’s like oh my goodness yeah that’s down in here so here H hop in here real quick and we’ll find kind of your sweet spot you know go just address wherever the ball would be like there you go and put it like right out in front of that come over here now and see that’s a great one now go to the top of your swing and now hold it up there you feel that you see where we’re at there so now now come down like you’re going to yeah I mean look at that yeah but that’s daunting I know and hey you know you could always like I said you could you could pool noodle the tip or something like that just kind of taking my normal s you know whatever I’m just boom right oh I’m just on it every time yeah I don’t want you leaving with a permanent scar that has to remind you of to get your hands inside every single time but but the whole point is this could be a station now say you were just hitting balls right here all day okay and you put this behind you well why not come back here though and give me some of these ready so here I’m going to go a little lower now for myself and I get in here like this you know what’s great about this you guys there’s there’s two reasons why this is a pre-shot routine not only is it a pre-shot routine to give you a feeling but you know what it does not only does it get your hands on the right path what does it do with your posture it keeps the butt back and the chest down cuz if I early extend into this at all I’m done right so the whole point is it’s a great way of feeling holding is this a porz out golf uh this is you know yeah we’re going to you need a bag with an extender we’re going to trademark this so everybody that use this to do a little Kickback you know poor Zach pole no but yeah the whole point being is this is something that like watch you know what here here’s what we’re doing we’re putting this right here come over here give it give it give it give give it the two or three swings kind of get your hands way up in there and then yeah there you go just in front of it there you are yep yep exactly how close we want to be here I mean you you know what I always say enough to scare you you know it could be 6 in away it could be you know 2 in away just enough to scare you I just like this as a little tool for you to stick on the back of the range yep leave it there and then just step on up and just give it the best feel and I’m going to hold this in a in a in a spot that scares you but not that’s too close okay good see where this is I’m going to line up with your hands I’m going to move it over and then come out a little bit this is where I want my the hands coming down underneath you oh coming so this on the way down so I’m going right here yeah I go over and then I bring it out a little bit to give you some Freedom there and you know what’s funny the highest straightest shot of the day right I mean it’s it’s it’s funny because from Kevin’s perspective I’m holding this and our viewer and Kevin are thinking oh he’s got tons of room no way but then we know it’s funny you’re over that ball and that thing you get it’s funny how you get to the top right and then that thing’s there and you’re like damn that’s close so what I’m doing here if someone wants to do this to someone though I’m lining this up with exactly where he is on his hands I move it back to his back outside his right hip on the same line and then I bring it out a few inches to give him some Freedom every time I put this here that ball is starting higher and online more online online exactly can I I’m going to give you a really athletic thought here okay and I want you to I want you to hear the sound that I’m about to make on this on this swing here this is me thinking I’m going to get my hands to my right knee for a taller Guy this is a great thought too because it’ll get you really engaged in it but I’m going to compress this CU I’m going to get my hands right into my right knee hear that sound there yeah okay reason being why was I able to make such good contact well when I get my hands to my right knee I’m really staying in my posture and I’m engaging earlier in my transition so on this next swing here Jo I just want you to be athletic I know we’re working on back swing and working on sequence 10% 90% feeling but I want you to drive your hands literally down low to your right knee this should immediately get the impact better and then get you elevating that ball up up a little more online so it’s like you’re going back to the top right so go all the way up there and you’re trying to feel like it comes in here down exactly exactly so go to the top again this is the part we’re missing the handle right there get the handle going right there exactly there you go there you go see that’s engaged that’s the part we’re missing I’m going to show you the difference between my rehearsal and your rehearsal here’s my rehearsal I’m taking the angle I have right here y not changing it and moving it down I’m not quick to let this angle go cuz even when you bring it down you’re letting that club head swing past you and letting it go that yeah see right there that club should still be like this and that’s why you get that Slappy left Conta there it is there it is right there yeah hold that angle and drive it down there it is there it is it is try that right there and let’s go slow on the way down so watch what I’m going to do to you I’m going to come on down see what I’m doing I held that from going that way exactly so go up there again ready go ahead there it is there’s your best swing of the day best swing I’ve ever seen you make in front of me actually yeah that was good that was gamechanging and I want you to know that right there is the key but the angle that I create here in my set position is turned to the top and driven down it’s not turned to the top and let go yeah so when I’m saying Hammer the nail and I’m actually go to the top of your swing and I’m sitting there telling you hey for you we need to feel like the nails right here well exactly you’re hammering with with this and here’s the thing if this is going this way well we lost the end of the hammer so I want you to bring that butt of the club down into that finger there exactly boom that that’s more what I want to see there it is right there and what all that happened there I mean that was significantly better that last one well what happened was this angle was held and the hands drove down well now you had the angle necessary to when it was let go compress the golf ball like that you know when I always say when this is here well from this angle too it can just you know yeah I just have to trust from that point that my body’s going to take care of it from there absolutely do that again that was so good dude yeah I love that there it is Kevin’s even shaking his head back there yep we got it oh dude oh hello at porac golf we take a lot of pride in having developed some of the 1. You nailed it, I never thought about it that I was swinging my hands at the ball. Thank you for this, I'm going to apply this at the range tomorrow for sure!

  2. I'm standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon with Evil Knievil. He's on his rocket bike and he's going to jump over a mile wide gap. I ask him if he can do it. He gives me a sideways glance and blithely replies "No problem, I've taken lessons from PorzakGolf."

  3. another gem! was just trying to work on hand path recently too! trying to eliminate those hooks!

  4. Adam, Thanks for sharing these lesson “tidbits” on YT.

Gotta give the student props. Your swing changed notably! Keep working at it.

Would love to see a “Porzak Improvement” follow-on video in the future after implementing Adam’s recommendations!

  5. if I'm chunking it while doing this is there an obvious reason why it could be because if I'm not doing this I don't chunk it. and no I'm not steep if anything I would describe my downswing too shallow

  6. Great video, this is exactly what I'm working on after watching a video of myself at the range. Right hands down to right pocket and holding a headcover under my right armpit really helps

  7. Unreal. But I’ve just been down the rabbit hole of your pitching and wedge videos.

Am I correct in thinking this ‘hold the angle’ thought is for full shots only? It seemed to me for the 80 and in wedge play you were teaching less hinge and more back and through, unless you’re in the rough and then you hinge for a bit more angle of attack.

  8. Great stuff. Need help with getting on my left side. When I don’t I pull hook every shot. When I manage to get on my left side with a high finish it’s straight to baby draw.

  9. I’ve come to realize that when I get my hands out towards the golf ball, it also promotes early extension and for me that leads to a hook. I love this drill as it helps with both!

  10. I've finally started to get my hands more close to my body on the downswing. I was shaking quite a bit and this has helped. I'll also practice holding that angle down as I was coming to parallel more. I'll see if it helps. Thanks.

  11. I was improving my swing through your videos, to the point that my buddies were commenting on how well I was playing. Then I seemed to have lost the feel. This is exactly what I needed and perfect timing! BTW, anyone know if the driver is the same type of feel?

  12. I am so glad I found your channel! Been watching other YT videos and they just don’t help me. Never hit the ball better with my irons. So I’m wondering if this hand path works with the driver also? Thanks!
