the Insiders leaving notes it it seems like the heavy favorite is for the Broncos to trade back find a way to get bow Knicks and to be honest that that’s not the most exciting plan to me but you know at least there’s some direction and if all goes well the Broncos have a quarterback for the next decade or more and if that happens then I’ll be happy to say I was wrong well Jake how are you feeling about all this extremely nervous yeah you seem nervous yeah you seem like uh you don’t know what’s coming I have no idea what’s coming I don’t know what to expect and I don’t know how I’m about to feel in about 3 and 1/2 hours when this thing’s all done what are you most scared of Jake um bonix what is it that scares you about bonix he’s 24 years old uh-huh um when he played in the SEC the best college football conference in America he played like a chicken with his head cut off and his decision making in impactful situation scares me yeah and I think the Auburn stuff is the stuff that most of us big college football heads are struggling to get over I was hearing one of the big National analysts talk about how it’s something he hears from NFL circles all the time like the Auburn stuff comes up it matters and it’s hard to get over but we have given Jaden Daniels a pass on that stuff I’m not as high on jayen Daniels as many other people um and it’s nothing to do with his talent it’s more so his durability I just don’t want to see the guy get snapped in half especially in orange and blue oh totally I mean I mean that’s a big fear I think did you see the picture that came out today of him walking down the red carpet and Cam Newton interviewed him I didn’t tell me everything well obviously while Cam Newton was interviewing him Cam Newton was standing right next to him and Jaden Daniels looked tiny like he looked about 6 Ines shorter he looked about 100 lb lighter and that for the first time was when I got nervous about it also do I see em M on the stage here yes Eminem and up at five with the Chargers is it the gmen is it the Vikings would the Chargers trade with the Broncos what would it take to trade up with uh the Chargers the Chargers aren’t going to trade with the Broncos to let them get JJ McCarthy they they definitely will not unless Jim Harbaugh like no one knows him better than me behind closed doors he’s like this guy like JJ’s common smiley face prep the interview any other quarterbacks he’s already met with the team and you know I think the bigger thing is how entitled and how much he was handed the keys at in college right he’s like this new strength I that’s where I think the biggest thrown on the moves I think that’s where the biggest Miss is on him I really don’t think his arm is like that he has easy power he’s had some the last couple years that definitely have stood out to me like that he has easy power like the when he doesn’t step into it but he isn’t Joe Milton he isn’t Drake May or sorry Josh Allen he literally is Drake May he’s got uh he’s got that’ be crazy if I mean look at this yeah look at that thing floating off his back foot lobbed into the air I mean it was like a fade away that he does have he does have an easy throwing motion I’ll give you that but I don’t think the ball pops off of his hand like some of the better armed guys in the NFL yeah no I I agree I think there’s a tier above him thank you yep and that’s pennx is JJ McCarthy a tier above him JJ is just a bit I would probably take May over McCarthy but I just go back and forth on those two oh arm strength the the easy the easy power that may has sometimes where like he doesn’t says feet that might be the tiebreaker but I think in general it’s pretty similar I think drank May is a guy there was a little Prospect fatigue on maybe yeah I think most years that guy goes first over all he’s from a family of athletes of course he is very athletic probably more athletic than many people give him credit for he can run the ball he a lot of the analytics people are like he’s the best over the-middle thrower in the class so got a little touch to him yes he does he knows how to layer the ball so it’s just consistency y yeah yeah and learning the like that’s my thing is I feel like have its develop in this last season right he just doesn’t like he knows football like somebody’s going to need to like bring him up there and just be like okay here’s what we’re doing like here’s how you identify oneon-one here’s how like here’s how you win football games like he just doesn’t seem to have like a good feel for like the art of ball knowing I mean you know yeah like I feel like that’s number one is you just have to teach him like I know that win I know that sounds crazy I know that sounds crazy but like Zack Wilson was the number two overall pick in uh the NFL draft correct Henry immediately after the Broncos traded him traded for him pulled out the clip of him throwing to the flat against the Broncos the guy getting tackle putting the ball where he wants it hitting his receivers over the middle and being able to attack the sidelines and go outside uh the numbers to a very talented receiving core and kind of found a a next step in his maturity as a quarterback and becoming more of a game manager in this Dynamic Oregon offense while still picking a spots where you saw him though take his game to the next level and show you that extra promise is in situations like the game against Utah where Utah’s creating a lot of pressure and he’s still able to Zing it deep off his back foot they put like 21 points on them in three possessions in Utah Utah’s always very well coached and he didn’t have any trouble or you can go back to the Auburn tape where you see the off platform stuff you see the Dual threat ability you see the ability to gun it deep Shawn Payton’s going to have to marry the two the two minds of bonck Oregon bonck and young Auburn exciting five-star Prospect bonck also we got to remember at Auburn this is a kid who’s a true son whose father played at Auburn y who his entire life dreamed of being the quarterback at Auburn is a starter from his freshman year wins the iron Bull in his freshman year and then that pressure and a coaching staff that’s being fired and all that I think kind of caught up to him was on the roster with Jared stat Auburn fun fact Qui crossover but yep and Sean’s going to have to find a way to marry those two guys marry Advanced 24-year-old quarterback at Oregon B knck and still find a way to bring out that exciting dual threat talent that has some Jaylen Herz to him and see where you can go I’m shocked they would stay at 12 and take them when five QB needy teams already got their guys in the top 10 the tough part though is that you got the Raiders at 13 QB needy Saints at 14 I mean probably not QB needy but again the Falcons just took a quarterback so why couldn’t the Saints there are the rumors today that the the Rams might be trying to get into the top 10 to take B knck like if you want B knck you can’t trade down and expect him to be there yeah I mean here’s what I’ll say I’ll start here I said I want whatever the Broncos do I want them to do it with conviction uhuh and I think picking Bon knck at this position is doing it with conviction yeah um if you were trading back hoping that b Knicks would still be around at 17 18 that means that you didn’t really love B knck it means that you kind of like the idea of B knck you’re willing to flirt with it and if it all comes together we’ll take him the fact that they go here and just say we’re staying at 12 we love B knck we think he’s going to be there and we’re going to take him to me gives me confidence that this was Shawn Payton’s guy they absolutely if they wanted to could have gone and got JJ McCarthy yep who I think all of us liked a little bit more for very little investment the fact that they didn’t do that again tells me they’re really in on B Knicks and I like that one more positive note I’ll say on B Knicks is I was that packed 12 media days last year and when B Knicks walked in he just had an aura a glow he had a glow of like that guy looks like the franchise quarterback of someone’s franchise eventually um I realize that is very uh the way that he carried himself so it’s going to take me a second to talk myself into the uh the player but I do think it’s important to not fall into just think like go go watch some Bon knck and formulate an opinion for yourself um because I think there’s a lot of people that are low on him including me but it’s not necessarily because the guy doesn’t play good quarterback the guy was very very impressive in his years at Oregon no he was last season he was incredible I mean go watch him whoop Caleb Williams’s ass against USC go watch him whoop that ass against Utah you know you’re going to like a lot of the Bon next tape you see yeah I think uh overall that’s a little bit of a mixed decision from the crowd here is that is mixed reaction mixed reaction more disappointment than anything you know I think I just you know when we had the last pod I said that overall I just wanted a quarterback no matter what at this point we had been through the quarterback career so I just wanted a new back um so he is that so I can’t be too mad about it um and if this is Sean’s guy I’m willing to wait and see how it turns out I did see no high-fiving though in the Broncos uh you know everybody was high fiving for Kay will everybody was high fiving for Jay danels like when you get your guy you’re really excited about it you know bonck if bonck are true their guy I feel like that’s a moment where you’re like man we got him he slipped to us you know we were celebrating I think we needed a quarterback so we got Shawn Payton’s hands because I know people like I think hasn’t Zach said he’s the most Drew breezes like he has some elements to his game that reminds you of reeze as more of like what was his completion percentage last year something crazy like 78% or something record yep but he also has that stuff that modern Shawn Payton has shown you as he’s experimented with the taes hills and those mobile quarterbacks he can kind of do both and in this Play caller’s Hands that’s really intriguing y I was waiting to see when will we see that type of quarterback get coached up by Shawn and now you get that and he’s also NFL ready he’s Pro ready right yep two two things first one is Brock Bowers going to the Raiders devastating um not really ALS they had Darren Waller in his how did that do for them Darren Waller was not that good I never had to cover him no offense you have the uh you have the he he had his moment he had his moment he was good for a couple years yeah but he wasn’t like he’s not Brock Bowers is GNA year one he might have more yards than 77% completions last year that’s insane he set the record and what’s and what’s interesting about that fact is like people like to say a lot of his passes were behind the line of scrimmage or screen whatever whatever it may be like that is Shawn Payton’s offense what we saw Russell Wilson was a lot of screens a lot of Quick Check Downs like if he can just get our players the ballc there it is they kind of missed the high five that’s okay though and he can do the rough stuff and you know scramble and throw it off his back leg and pull a rabbit out his hat as well okay so a couple Adam shefter tweets this been like five minutes this is a you could you could send them to Yaya and you could bring them up on the street if you nobody wants to read for themselves here um Broncos Center Alex foresight who played with Nicks at or before Denver drafted him in the seventh round last year raved to Denver’s coaches about his former college quarterback for told the Broncos coaches that Nicks is smart knows every protection handles it all at the line of scrimmage had Universal respect control Protections in the line of scrimmage glad to hear that we knew pennx did that which is one of like the thing but hadn’t heard too much about the others the other one Denver held a private workout B Nicks the day after his Pro Day the night before the workout the Broncos sent Nicks three packets of offensive play installation the next morning as they worked in the classroom with Nicks he crushed it Pro Broncos Source uh the Broncos then took Nicks from the classroom to the field watched him throw for an hour and we convinced they had a quarterback they wanted so this is what I said when I was on the show last Friday is we don’t know who Shawn Payton’s guy is but he’s gonna have a guy and I tell told the story of when he and Drew Brees met during free agency and Shawn Payton came with all this stuff and Drew Brees was like wow I love this stuff is this what you like to call and Shawn pyton was like this is what I want to call for you and that’s kind of where their relationship blossomed and it was all about that meeting that kind of made it all happen and I said Shawn Payton’s going to have someone I don’t know if it’s JJ McCarthy that’s who I thought it was going to be or Michael pennick or Bo Nicks there’s going to be someone that something happens during those meetings when they’re talking on the board and Talking Football where it turns it on and it sounds like this was it yep I you know I do think that week one if you just had to go win a game I would take Cale Williams to go win that game but second behind him it might be B Knick the the tough part got to take penx who beat b knck twice in the biggest game but the thing is with B Knicks you’re building an offense around him it’s it’s rpos it’s quick game it’s all this short stuff uh whereas with penck you plug him into an NFL offense it might just take some time and so I think that’s the big appeal for me with B knck is that right away you know exactly what to do with him the blueprint is there you would hope that he grows and can kind of expand that and start running more of an NFL type of offense but you know that if if you’re willing to run the quick game RPO Slants all that sort of stuff yeah he’ll he’ll put stuff on Target and hopefully you teach him how to do that other stuff down the line um and hopefully have The Playmakers to take advantage because that’s the other thing you know Troy Franklin y he’s a catch and run specialist there are a lot of times he’s catching balls five yards down field and taking it to the house he might be a first round pick as a receiver Bucky Irving he’s going to be one of the first running backs off the board he’s the best receiving running back in the country um I think led the nation in receptions you feed him and he just goes and makes plays I’m not convinced that the Broncos have those guys on the roster right now who you can feed and let them do the work and take the load off the quarterback but I do think that there is the the way you build this offense is very very clear right now and I just hope the ceiling is higher than I’ve thought it is let’s break it down let’s yep it’s all about that ceiling goonight how do you feel like this affects players specifically like courin setting how do you feel like this affects his game I think so he’s a tough one because you might say hey there’s your one deep threat Marvin mim’s a different type but if you get Court isolated maybe you do have him throw some of those balls up the sideline just jump balls back shoulder that sort of thing um I I think you have to but again that’s not really the bow Nicks type of game um you can do it you think so he can throw that all day long then that’s the thing so you might just have him play more of a true X type type of he could throw that outside like back shoulder that contested grab here’s my message to Broncos Country we have something to be excited about whether you wanted bow Knicks or not this season just got infinitely more interesting% I as someone who was team pack it in and get ready for shador next year I also knew that this would probably be the worst least exciting Broncos season ever if that was going to be the case and so the flip side of this is now everything just became interesting everything about the Broncos from now until the end of next season and hopefully Beyond just became infinitely more interesting we have a reason to be excited for rookie mini camp and OTAs and we have a reason to go and watch every single throw of training camp and come back and talk about it on the show every single preseason game is going to come with like a little bit of extra buzz and excitement and then you go into this season and it’s like did he get it right you you spent all this money you traded picks to get Shawn pyton because because you believe he’s the guy who can get a quarterback right and everything now is we get to find out was it worth it was that investment worth it and uh and that to me is what makes this exciting and and I’m ready for it I’m ready to to ride the bonck train yeah and just running through more of those guy like Marvin Mims you you know he’s a deep threat again I don’t know that that’s Mo Nick’s game but you do start he’s probably your featured screen guy like he’s probably getting more of those than everybody and for somebody who he be Troy Franklin right exactly like you knew he had that one skill going deep now you get to take advantage of what should be a second skill without asking him to to learn a bunch of other routes um hopefully he’s doing that so at some point you can do it you know Tim Patrick a great blocking receiver I don’t know that any receiver wants that to be the first thing said about him but in this offense he’s going to be doing a lot of blocking and he’s really good at it um so I think Tim’s a great vertical threat too yeah I just I mean we’ll see post injury how much of that still I just want to see Knicks be a guy who takes advantage of the vertical thre no I mean he’s he better I mean exactly drafted in the first or seventh round if you can’t hit a guy deep one-on-one you’re not going to last in the NFL very long right those are you might as well be wide open in the NFL if you’re like oneon-one outside you got to take those shots and you got to hit them more often than you don’t those opportunities I would just like to say are a lot less than they used to be though most teams are saying they’re moving the safety putting two safeties back there and saying we’re not going to let you chunk us down the field cover leag it is it is a cover two Le cover to so honestly if you’re willing to take your medicine and win on the short stuff and you have a quarterback who completed 78% of his passes in those areas then maybe you’re taking advantage of the way that NFL defenses are being called right now also if you’re playing with two deep safeties great way to counter that is have a quarterback who can lower his shoulder just take it and run it yep mhm also I hope we get that 14th pick no you have to you’re not getting bonck without some QB runs I’ll tell you that right now exactly QB runs are part of the the marriage we just entered it’s read options it’s rpos it’s Slants and uhhuh then that’s that’s kind of your offense also real so because we didn’t see much of it Russell Wilson I mean there was a handful of plays and that was part of Russ’s game Bon might already be faster I think Russ might have slowed down so much plus I I think hopes might have been a little higher for Russ Russ has Russ has that deep ball so you want him playing that a little bit more but it worked so well I can’t I can’t remember the time where it went for less than seven yards any time they did pull it like but it just wasn’t Sean’s bread and butter it’s true 14th pick though Saints taking uh tiis faga tackle from Oregan State do you think it wasn’t Sean’s bread and butter or was it Russ just didn’t want to put his body on the line and run for that many yards I feel like because of how last year was I think Russ would have done whatever Shawn wanted him to do because he felt like it was a mega break year for him so I think that that was more of Shan’s thing but I do know that part of the reason why Russ exited from Seattle is because Seattle wanted him to stay in his bubble and do what he did and he wanted to be more of a pocking passing quarterback so yep yeah I mean he’s also what 11 years older than uh than b knck correct so you know he when Russell Wilson came to Denver he top five all time in quarterback rushing yards y um you know for those 10 years he was running the ball a lot and then obviously he he stopped doing that but he also got like nasty concussion in year one um and so maybe they just had to be more cautious with them one thing I’ll say about B Knicks he does have that dog in him certainly I mean he brings fire on the field um he is going to be fun in that way like he’s going to run over a safety or a corner in one of those early games and get everyone fired up he’s going to win over Broncos country all everyone who doesn’t like him because of the pre-draft evaluations are going to end up getting either one over tomorrow when he comes and talks because that’s usually the first time you you bring like 30% of the people that aren’t excited and then when he gets out there on the field and just starts playing the way the G the type of game that he plays people are are going to come along slowly but surely and get more excited about him we’ll see if it works out I have no idea if this is going to end up working out for the Broncos heck it could go so poorly that they could still draft Shor next year that’s right but in the cards I think that there is a CH a real chance that uh people are going to start to fall in love with B Knicks over time uh Todd you want to read that super chat I did I called it P so I think the Broncos heard me say pinix but they thought I was saying bonix the Chargers with Jimmy are going to be more uh more physical uh for sure with bck you you got to be more physical too you know this is GNA have to be more of a run first approach here and uh so running back second round well they don’t have a second round but early third yeah potentially yeah no I think that would make a lot of sense I think Center also makes sense there no um yeah Blake cor if he’s there I’d love that that I don’t like having a second round pick right now it’s making me very une no see it’s really easy to be fine with that last year but then as soon as you get to this year having traded that pick away sure does stin I do like that we didn’t trade any Capital like we have everything we started with like I was very nervous that to get up to the guy we needed we would have to like sell the farm and then we’d be sitting here from one to five with no picks but I’m happy that we do have more capital in this draft ni and next off season you have all your picks you’re going to have a ton of cap like if if Bo pops if he has an intriguing rookie season give me what 11 Ed all of a sudden Broncos not buying tons of cop tons of pics please do better he only played in like three games I know and he had one good one and the others were trash all that matters is the one good that’s all no they had got the tweets and the the takes off after the first game he threw like two posts that hit and it made his stat line look really good everyone loves a good post yeah we do and then they stopped letting him throw the post and he didn’t do anything else ever again should we bring in one of the draft boys who’ve been watching bonck for let’s bring in we got to bring in Jake because it’s going to be good content cuz he’s like a baby over there okay I’ll go grab a burger all right just make sure you eat the Burger on set people want to see that oh okay so this is my question with stey with Wilson Jake get over here with B knck does this mean that B knck has to start week one so I brought this up on the podcast for like two minutes um because I haven’t had a chance since I actually went back and watched all of the all all of the uh Zack Wilson throws or hadn’t before then having gone back and watched his like strengths and weaknesses have flipped uhhuh like he is now pretty good in like the quick game easy reads reading things out of the bunch however all the downfield stuff is gone I think the B Knicks offense and the Zack Wilson offense are pretty similar okay so I I think you got to give the edge to B Knicks to win a quarterback competition but I do think that there is a competition there what do you what initial reaction to the pick Justin H qb6 at 12 is it’s an adjustment um I’m with you I mean I think with the group you have it it makes a lot of sense to bring another guy in um yeah I imagine you’re worried about potentially trading back and having somebody like the ram kind of snipy on him so I think if if you believe in him you kind of do have to pull the trigger I understand the logic there um I can’t say I was jumping for joy and like pulling up nike.com trying to get the the next Bon’s Jersey though if you were to buy Jersey which one would you get white blue orange the throwback if possible the answer is the throwback doubt Jake how you doing Jake Jake behind the scenes Let me let me start with this so you started jumping on the draft pod with us in was that 2019 2020 2020 I think it was 2020 one of the very first things I learned about Jake is that he hates bow Nicks he really hat and so I have known for years it’s actually part of the reason I like despite all the things that happened I was like I heard so many terrible things about B Nick from Jake schwanitz that I was still like I kind of see what he’s talking about and it maybe it’s changed my opinion a little bit but just given that background how do you feel now Jake that bck is a Denver Bronco not good not good we just took the sixth quarterback at the 12th overall pick I’m just I’m begging this franchise for one year to just not be desperate as hell I am begging this franchise and they just do this [ __ ] over and over and over they do so what what is it about his game that you hate what is it I feel like he he reminds me of Drew lock whereas he’s running around and he just makes these boneheaded decisions and it’s like you didn’t have to throw across your body 10 yard down the field like you can run you can take a sack for all I care at that point it’s too much of that he did get a lot better at Oregon you got to give him credit there um I’m worried about his ceiling he’s 24 years old how much better is this guy going to get from here on out he’s playing in a wideopen offense in an Oregon spread uh he had a great back a great offensive line he had a deep threat that he could just Chuck it down the field to in Troy Franklin um that’s that’s all I got man does it make you feel any better that Adam shefer says Alex foresight gives him the not of appr Che no no not the one thing I took from that is that bonic set his protections which we didn’t know beforehand you do like to hear that uhhuh fine okay uh he showed a lot of growth from Auburn like being fair to oh yeah he did but I’m sorry you were in the best conference in college football and that’s how you performed like I that’s we’re looking at Jaden Daniels one of Heisman who took a step up and upped his performance and you know B Knicks had to go down to the Pack 12 to have all these stats and stuff and that’s cool but where was it in the SEC you know you can say he was a young guy in all this but in the SEC that’s the most like the NFL that you’re going to see in college football and so many times it was just bad football from Bo Knicks that lost Auburn games and you can say Auburn didn’t have a lot around him that’s totally Fair he looked good when he had The Supporting Cast at Oregon but quarterback is about elevating your team it’s not about performing when it’s all right around you yeah you do have to perform I guess but I you want to see more you want to see a quarterback Elevate and just pick up a team rather than play up to his team and that’s what I thought we saw from Bon Nick in his college there’s like a lot of like uh talk about Game Changer versus game manager is that what you’re saying that b Knicks is more of a manager than a changer a ele Vader mhm yeah at in some degree yes I mean he he does have the improvisational skills he’s an athlete he can run the ball and he can do all this stuff he’s going to be a guy that I think could fit into what Shawn Payton wants to do offensively um you know just not being a statue back there he does he did look better throwing the ball in terms of accuracy uh at Oregon as well but I just don’t think this is a guy look man let’s face it you’re in a division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert you need a quarterback who’s going to play up to par with them Y and if he can’t you know play out of his mind and Elevate this team on a consistent basis what are we doing yeah I think that’s a concern I think we’ve talked about a little bit but you can build an offense around him it’s the quick game it’s the RPO it’s the re it’s all that short stuff yep he can escape the pocket and make plays out of rhythm but what’s lacking is the in between it’s the five-step drop make a couple reads and then deliver a good ball that’s what just isn’t there and that’s what I feel like a lot of being an NFL quarterback comes down to is going through multiple reads and then hitting receivers but the problem is is I mean we don’t know definitively that he can’t do it we just haven’t seen it because that’s not what Oregon does yeah and so for example we had Brian baldinger on the show a couple weeks ago um and we asked about bonck and basically what he said was you know he’s played this much college football but you watch every single throw of his entire career you Come Away saying like there’s 50 NFL throws that he’s put on tape exactly despite playing like 5 six and so like there is that unknown there there is a chance that he can do it but there’s just no evidence and I think that a lot of what he does well that quick game stuff I think if you’re a first- round quarterback you should be able to run quick game like you you should be able to to throw screens and SLS and he does it really well and we’ve SE I mean Bron was have Zach Wilson yeah he couldn’t hit a screen for the first two years in the NFL he like would hit the guys in the feet he throw up behind it like he could not hit a screen that does exist that’s not really a concern and so the fact that he can do that well it just doesn’t really move me in in a positive way does some does something or the narrative could we talk about could he be very coachable with his transfer from Auburn to Oregon and be his ability to elevate his game there I think that’s probably one of his strongest selling points you see I mean there have been reports about the Broncos working him out privately and giving him you know various versions of the offense to break down and you know this guy’s money yeah he feels like a Payton guy in that sense I kind of what Jake said that athleticism like I think you’re going to be able to create play action opportunities for him get the ball out of his hands quickly I don’t know man like I I can talk myself into some aspects of this game it’s just to me what it comes down to is at 12 it feels a little bit rich I think you probably could have moved down and SL a good chance to get him and ultimately I think what makes me feel the most skeptical about even the the growth that we’ve seen from him over the last couple of years is and maybe this isn’t fair to put it in such a small sample size but you had two opportunities going head-to-head against Michael penx Jr this year and he lost both and pennx really elevated that offense in a way that was tangible and really impacted the outcome of those wins for Washington so it’s like I I like I like that it’s not the bow Knicks of Auburn I also wonder if you know what it really comes down to it two-minute drill is like he the guy that leads you down the field and leads you to victory I don’t know we didn’t see it super consistently y um just want to remind everybody all of our I know Sean pyton a lot of foreshadowing and I think that’s the bow Nick cut on your head right there did you know this pick was coming wow he left oh there he is I knew it was coming I knew was coming so much we can hear him you can hear me of course I knew this was no this is this makes so much sense this is a Shan hating type of quarterback not just because of the system and the fit but also he had work onch 18th the Broncos did exactly what they did with JJ MTH we all heard about that they did it with B after his they sent him a bunch of information saw how he could handle that cramming and crunch time because then they had a meeting with him the following day and a work out on the field he absolutely crushed from my understanding he crushed that meeting that they had with the information and the processing and the ability to pick up on offense quickly and then they were they were very happy with his throwing on of course kind of the biggest question with is well how good is his arm can he do anything over yard down field to my understanding that is not a question that Shan pton came out of that meeting with him with any questions about they think that he can operate his offense and really after just talking to bck too uh it really seems like Shawn pton B knck click in terms of the offense and it seems like those two are really going to see things the exact same what have we said it’s all about Shan finding his guy at quarterback and his guy is the one that can be the guy on the field that does what Shan wants and that’s exactly what Shan pton thinks that b is going to be seems like reactions from Broncos Country been pretty mixed on this one you have been hanging out with all the media people down there was it generally positive vibe more concerns what’s going on yeah I know you guys could fully hear me this this was the expected thing that was going to happen uh from about this afternoon until right now is just a question of whe the Broncos GNA have to trade up uh they they really never thought about trading down especially with the way the board fell once five quarterbacks have been taken before their pick at 12 they were not going to trade down I do believe there were opportunities for the Broncos to trade down but they were in no uh no position to trade down so uh kind of not not surprising at all here at Dove Valley this was the expected pick from this afternoon and that’s that’s what ended up happening B Knicks a lot higher on Shawn Payton’s board than he was clearly the rest of the NFL being the sixth quarterback taken but let me remind you Lamar Jackson was also the sixth quarterback taken in that draft too so just because where you drafted doesn’t uh mean that you’re going to be the sixth best quarterback in this draft and Shawn Payton bonck couldn’t have landed in a better place than the Broncos working with Jean Zach is your impression that that’s genuine belief in BO is there any concern on your part just in terms of the reality is he was probably the most realistic quarterback in their range is there any I don’t know just fear of you’re you’re talking yourself into them I suppose no I think it’s a totally fair question to ask Justin I think that’s a lot of thing a big question that a lot of fans are going to have too but here’s the reality is JJ McCarthy also profiled as a Shawn Payton type of quarterback the Broncos like JJ but weren’t over the moon uh on him and he was there for the Broncos if they wanted to trade uh to S to nine probably not with the Falcons at eight because they were going quarterback they could have made a move and it wouldn’t have costed them a hall so because of the way the board fell I think we can look at this and say um that the Broncos aren’t just aren’t just blowing smoke at Broncos Country here and hyping bow up because they could have had um they put could have had Michael penx Jr if they wanted to they could have jumped to seven for that and maybe not even given up a future first they could have jumped to to eight or nine uh and gotten or even 10 and definitely not giv up a future first to go get JJ McCarthy but the way the board fell they felt comfortable that the Vikings were going to go up and get JJ there and then the Jets weren’t going to draft both so he landed right in their lap and again they could have traded back there were offers there but they decided with five quarterbacks already off the board we don’t want to miss uh getting our guy and that’s the exact right approach I told you guys and I I’ve been saying that for months I would have been so concerned upset um not happy if they traded back and then still drafted a quarterback because it just meant that that he wasn’t their guy um and so I’m happy that they stood Pat and took boa 12 do you have any idea of the teams that were potentially in the mix in terms of that trade back conversation there were there’s a lot of teams that that the Broncos talked to today um about potentially trading up but then also trading back a handful of them I believe the Eagles are a name that’s been thrown out a lot um but I mean there were there were a number of teams a handful of teams actually that uh the Broncos could have or at least had talked to in the past 24 hours about moving back but when Bo was there and Bo was the only guy there uh that they weren’t moving back do you like the pick yes and I like the pick because uh Shawn pyton has identified his quarterback look coming into this draft the Broncos had the worst quarterback room in the NFL with Zack Wilson Jared stum uh and there what did that change we’ll see but I like the shant has identified that this is his guy and this is a big deal I know stay 12 picking the six best six quarterback in the draft isn’t that sexy for Broncos country to fully get behind a guy but Sean has never drafted a quarterback in the first or the second round and this is the second highest that a bron that the Broncos have ever drafted a quarterback so view it that way that shows how big of an investment how much Shawn pton and the Broncos really liked B Knicks in order to take him here again when you look at it as he’s a sixth quarterback taken in this draft you can be like ah man that’s not very exciting but when you look at it as only Jake Cutler has been drafted higher from in the entire Broncos history than Bon Knicks and also Shawn pton has never come close to drafting the quarterback this High and the Broncos brought Shawn pton in here not to have a good team not to have a good defense a complete team they brought him in here to make this uh offense good specifically starting at the quarterback position and so I like that Shawn put his stamp on a guy and Bo we talked to Bo right after he was drafted and he was asked has he been given any assurances that he’s going to play early and he said no I understand that everyone has to compete bonix is the Broncos week one starter let let let’s not play games here there might be a quarterback competition uh there there might not even be a quarterback competition but there might be a little open competition for training camp and and OTAs bonick is the Broncos week one starting quarterback he’s a guy that’s played I believe a record number of college games he if anyone is ready to hit the ground running it’s B knck and Shawn pton Fields comfortable with that very interesting does that in your opinion does that mean that either stdy or uh Zack Wilson will not make the uh final roster at the end of training camp yeah yeah probably uh and now just throwing numbers out there the Broncos are going to have to pay Zack Wilson two uh just under $3 million in guaranteed money but they could save five million if they decide to move on from number eight now Jared stum they say five million in cap if he’s on the roster it’s $7 million cap hit he only has $2 million in dead caps they’d say $5 million so now that competition I think the real competition with the Broncos quarterback room is for that backup spot now oh no I can’t hear you um it’s a conviction thing right if that’s your guy that’s your guy and and what Zach is saying is this was the branca’s guy regard of how some of this played out how does that make you guys feel though I’m curious just in terms of hearing that they did have those conversations about moving up moving down Jake especially like what’s your reaction I mean it sounds like they were just pretty dead set on getting a quarterback bonck in particular so but you were upset saying like and take all of the stylistic potential similarities out of it purely just from a a draft decision and and playing the board this is at least a more positive indicator that like he is a guy rather than like H we’re we kind of like him I guess we’ll get him 20 picks from now I mean look if he’s your guy he’s your guy then go get him fair enough right there if that’s what Shawn Payton believes and that’s what the pick is for that reason he believed that he could be the guy so um it’s not what I would have done but uh if Shawn Payton believes it to be true he went and did it so yeah like it’s good they like him but I mean it’s more of like you you should like him if you didn’t like him that’d be the real story you know so like I yeah I guess it’s you could take that like it’s good they trade down but I mean I’m not my opinion isn’t really going to change based on how much they like him it’s like I’ve seen ni it’s not like they’re going and be like he’s all right I guess but yeah to us what what were the what do you think the precautions were what do you think the reason was for calling the trade up was the precautionary just in case more quarterbacks went off the board faster or was there somebody they could have probably been like how we really love this guy but it’s too expensive to get here so B Knicks MH is a tight you know close second and we’ll take him at 12 and that’s what I wonder that’s kind of what I was trying to ask him of like is he really your guy or is he your guy because the quote unquote hot girl you want to das to the prom already has a date yep yeah um too she just has her glasses on she hasn’t like done the know what I’m saying full makeover yet she got to find yeah we should yeah we should catch up is not going for it we should catch up on all these picks here um so we missed the uh it’s the last three we haven’t hit yet so leat latu going 15 UCLA Edge rusher to the Colts we got Byron Murphy going uh to te from Texas going to the Seahawks and now as the trade says uh we got the Vikings trading up to get Dallas Turner um The Edge from Alabama so after 14 consecutive uh 14 consecutive offensive players to start the draft three consecutive defensive guys now that’s a record right 11 JC horn was the the latest a couple years ago uh he was right before the Broncos right so would have been eight eight eight nine right that was that that I don’t know yeah it would have been right around there it JC horn was the guy I just can’t remember I think he was eight yeah yeah yeah I the other thing with B Knicks though and something we talk about a lot is that uh for young quarterbacks a lot of it is just like surviving until you can actually hopefully turn good like because it’s rare that regardless how many how many games you play in college like you’re probably not going to show up and just be the best player on the field what you’re hoping is that you have enough strengths to survive year one year two without getting benched so that you can grow and develop and then Blossom eventually I think that that’s one of the strengths for B Knicks and we’ve touched on a little bit but the path is just so clear for him how you run this offense that he should at least be able to tread water for these first couple of years and and that to me makes it a pretty safe pick um which is something some easy stuff get the ball out of his hands eliminate some of the negative plays that killed you with Russ I mean for all the positives he has getting the ball down the field that time and time again especially in some of those tight games the negative plays were such a killer and I look you know B has some of those moments too where he runs around and like you said throws cross body or thow tries to force something I imagine they’ll really have the reins on him you know keep it simple for him bro I watched this guy against the worst CU team of all time throw a pass over the back of his head yep Bengals going with the marus Mims yeah he does some of that stuff that’s a solid pick yeah yeah that’s a very solid pick at this point um yeah I think if he’s as smart as they are saying now um like per their conversations as as a rookie quarterback your greatest asset is the ability to uh read the box and kind of understand defense y cuz I think if he’s able to do that he can check to a run take the play off you know understand what’s in front of him and really be able to only pass the ball in situations where you know they’re in cover two and you know the area to attack okay that’s where I’m going to pass anything else we’re going to check to we’re going to check and we’re going to let uh javante run the ball and figure it out let me ask you from your perspective as as a NL Defender that’s been out there yep if you know that that’s the position the quarterback is in like it’s he’s only going to take it if it’s here uhhuh is that a sustainable way for an offense to really be successful or if you know that is that a situation as a defense where it’s like all right we’re just going to pin our ears back and go after him and see if we can get him off his off his rhythm yeah I think it’s not a long-term solution but I think it’s a great solution for a Young quarterback to keep you know getting his footing in the NFL um because what teams are going to start to do is just show you what you want to see pre pre-lay and then as soon as the ball sna here goes what you don’t like well that’s what some of the defenses you played on that’s what it was all about exactly like that wasn’t really the way Philips thing but Vic fangio it’s just Welly way Phillips 2 way Phillips 2 made everything look like cover four even when TJ was man he would sit at 15 right next to d stew and then all of a sudden like two two seconds before the ball snap he’s coming down guarding the tight end we wanted everything to look like cover four so a little bit that’s what we you know what I’m saying we want to disguise it as much as we could yeah you don’t see much of that in college though is the thing no like that’s once you get to the NFL you also wonder you don’t see many receivers pressed either and I think that makes the game easier in college because you’re just getting that free release every time so that’ll be the the timing is just a little bit different you almost have to make a read first before you can throw those quick passes well that’s how college is too with the wider hashes like also true what Oregon’s been doing for 15 years at this point they spread this thing as far as they can they use the hashes to their advantage so they can work as much space in the middle as they can and that’s where bonix flourished at Oran but I mean the argument is obviously that’s also where momes flourished also true sure that is also true be Mahomes no it’s very I’m not saying that I just mean like I think that was the notion for so long is that it is an impossible path forward guys that come out of these spread offenses that Air Raids we’re going to use as much space as we can get the ball quick screens and fly routes and just a lot of simplification they’re oh you know it’s not going to translate it takes a special cat out obviously it’s going to be much different but I I think it translates too well because of Andy Reid though so just like you know you have them wide hashes and you have some guys running Scott free because of the spacing because of what Andy Reed runs you might have a receiver or two running Scott free so it feels very similar Payton’s a guy that can create some of that stuff for a Young quarterback you would hope I think he can I think he can but I think he’ll I think he’ll stay in the slant quick game screen for uh you know playbook for B Nicks for sure yeah I’m curious as soon as this is over I’m headed home to write the film room obviously I have spent a lot of time watching some bow Knicks but that now it’s time to like lock in and I don’t know best game worst game and some interesting matchup so mostly that’s just a plug to read that either at like 400 a.m. this morning or when you wake up tomorrow what’s the reaction on the defensive side when the team invests in a offensive piece like this that’s I mean frankly a gamble like you could add a qu Mitchell who you think is just that all of a sudden you have a better Corner a terion Arnold you could have added a Byron Murphy or one of these Edge pieces and everybody is really a gamble but I mean you feel a little bit more self assured about the the hit rate on some of those guys versus like it really feels like with a quarterback I mean it’s it’s a rooll of the dice at best I think no matter what I think guys you know play it off like oh we’re going to have a good year or we’re going to be competitive and then we all know when we look at the quarterback position like that determines how good we’re going to be so whenever we get a new quarterback I think we’re ultimately hoping that this could be the guy you know throughout my years whether it was Drew lock or uh Paxton Lynch like we always felt like okay if we can get this guy right then you know we really can have a great team so even if they got a great corner I think nine times out of 10 guys are going to rather have the long shot at quarterback just because you know how pivotal that position is on the field and I’d imagine this situation in particular too yeah because projected starter was Wilson it’s it’s not quite the same as the Falcons where it’s like we already had Kirk like why not just give us one more piece here it’s it should be an upgrade you’d hope what does a guy like Bo need to do to come in as a rookie and basically command the respect of the locker room how does a guy like that come in and get belief from a bunch of grown ass men um one his wor e work ethic and then two I think he needs to be the smartest man on the field I think that’s important he has to show them that uh he knows his job he knows their job he knows the o line protection like he can handle it at all um so I think that would be very important if they see him like take control of it and understand it um and even kind of like put together scenarios um and and walk guys through what he’s thinking how he wants you to react I think that’s going to really really get the team on his side so kind of build off of that I mean you played for the Broncos you saw a lot of quarterbacks come through yeah how long of Watch watching that guy playing against him in practice did it take for you guys to know whether or not he had it uh it’s quick I don’t think it takes more in training camp yeah yeah within one training camp you can see if he’s the guy or not for sure it’s not long what happened with Paxton uh Paxton I think he made some good plays and then he just had pieces of his game he didn’t get to fully develop so you know he had all the physical attributes um and I think just wasn’t able to fully develop yeah so what you said about the quarterback being the hardest worker proving that you know everything Beyond you know beyond a doubt you would assume that that would be a common characteristic amongst quarterbacks but how common is it really it’s not it’s not as common as you think you have a large sample size yeah I’ve seen a lot of quarterbacks and you can tell the ones who are really diligent about their work and are really understand the game um they’re very different like Drew Brees and pton Manning with the I played with both of them so early in my career uh Drew bre and I went to Payton Manning um they were the only two quarterbacks and I’ve had plenty of my career that I’ve seen like run through practice run a play throw it to run receiver and then check it down fak and it to every other receiver like I know where everybody’s at on every single play and they were the only two to do it and I’ve I’ve had you know 15 other quarterbacks you know what I’m saying so it’s just very very specific when it comes to somebody who has very very talented but also can be the guy you know what was Kirk like um Kirk was good Kirk was good he was uh he was intense about his job I wouldn’t say that he did that after every play but he was very very meticulous about uh what he did and then the route that he threw it to what would be a tall tail giveaway in terms of this guy doesn’t have it I mean being unprepared I guess would be a pretty easy one showing up late and that type of stuff but I don’t know is there like a giveaway just in terms of a way a guy carries himself um one thing if you go out to practice and the quarterback is not already out there you’re like ah it’s not a good sign if you leave the field and quarterback’s not still out there not a good sign you know what I’m saying so I think those two things are just little signs of like you got to be here before everybody else um like Drew Brees like no matter what time I got into the building like his car was already there no matter what time I left his car was still there like it’s just it’s just what comes with being in that position but that’s the standard you are walking into if you are B Nick like this is what Shawn Payton has experienced and even before that he’s a bill parcel’s disciple you know quarterback Guru Denver obviously we have our own standards when it comes to quarterback that are frankly probably unrealistic and unfair for guys coming in because the odds of you being out or Manning are are pretty freaking slim but this is the reality this is the pressure when you are given the keys to this franchise like there’s just a different expectation than I mean even like a her cousins going into Atlanta where it’s like man if this guy’s even the 16th best quarterback in the league this is going to be light years better than anything we had in a decade yeah that’s a big thing also real quick I believe we’ve got one more pick the Rams taking Jared MSE at number 19 it’s kind of interesting how these are all falling those you got to rebuild that that interior dline obviously now makes sense they’ve had some free agent we we should be caught up oh I got a question about B Knicks uh you mentioned the pressure of playing in Denver yeah and uh the expectations that quarterback uh I know people have pointed to that pressure that he felt at Auburn do you think like he’s matured enough now to handle the pressure of like you got to come in here to be the guy and there’s no really there’s nowhere to escape to I mean we got to hope so right that’s the big qu like did you find yourself or did you go like Jake kind of said and essentially find like a safe place where you’re able to kind hide some of it and I mean the Auburn Situation’s tough like his I believe his dad was a legend there and like there’s a lot of pressure but like you’re saying I mean it kind of goes right in line with in Denver I like that he’s been through that type of experience that he hasn’t been a guy that’s had everything spoonfed to him like that he hasn’t been for the last 5 years oh this guy can’t miss you’re so perfect everybody kisses the ground like frankly like B knck has had to prove to a lot of people people that he isn’t the crappy quarterback that Jake and I have kind of been saying that he is for the last couple years I mean I like the idea of a guy being battle tested and he’s older he’s older too so he’s been through it before and you know being Auburn starting quarterback Oregon starting quarterback that’s a big deal there’s a certain amount of media tension that’s going to be on you and then he’s 24 so he’s actually got the maturity he’s been through it he’s mature and then fits that that Duality this uh Shawn Payton 2.0 canny Mary Tamm Hill with Drew Breeze how close can we get to those two sides of the coin uh coming together and then you might really have something is there any fear to you that this is like so sad Sean Payton look I think pton feels himself a little bit I think he’s a very confident guy for sure egotistical one even say any fear that it’s him trying to prove how smart he is like this I can I’m so much higher on this guy than everybody else I know what I’m doing you don’t I don’t know is that even a fair thing to bring up I don’t know if it is that I think it comes with a level of like I made this decision and now I got to prove it I think it comes with a level of like if he’s not showing me what I need to see in uh day one of training camp okay now we need to sit down and have a conversation cuz you’re not about to embarrass me me when you get out there you know so hopefully he you know brings that to the table that’s kind of like the mindset those kind of things can go both ways right we’ve seen bellich maybe get too cute and take guys that no one else had rated that highly higher than they should have gone and more often than not those picks haven’t necessarily worked out but you know momes was a guy who no one had that it’s the ultimate argument going top 12 top 15 in that draft and he’s certainly proved me resoundingly wrong uh goes without saying so there’s a double-edged sword right it’s the one pick in the top 15 that stands out to me as like for my rankings this is the one that stands out like a sore thumb but when we look back that top 15 just because it matches my rankings there’s still going to be a ton of bust in there right and there’s nothing saying that Bo is one of those Buffs or Bo isn’t one of those Buffs time will tell really let me ask so when Zach was on he talked about the Broncos had opportunities to trade up he could have probably gone up and gotten penics ahead of Atlanta if you wanted to at seven they also had opportunities to trade down or trade up for JJ if that’s what they want and you know Zach is saying Bo is their Guy this is who they wanted the board played out the way that they wanted yep cynic like Jake would argue you could have maybe traded down and still gotten your guy but do you does it give you more confidence in a guy that you’re Maybe be a little on the fence in knowing that this was the draft practice like no we’re this is our guy and we’re going to get him we’re not going to get cute we’re not going to trade down we’re not going to do the Drew lock thing and hope he falls to the second like we believe he is a guy we believe he’s a top 15 pick we’re taking him th% 1,000% I think there’s some real confidence in that kind of conviction to go get your guy also look we talked about it earlier today A lot of times we get here day of week of the draft and we start to talk ourselves into oh will Levis will be the fifth quarterback to go top 10 or oh man Sam how Malik Willis Kenny pick it they might all go first round and then it’s like ah that was [ __ ] that was school’s gold this year that was true Five Guys in the top 10 six in the top 12 making draft history and there were rumors from Diana Rini and others today just hours before the draft started that teams like the LA Rams were interested in bone x m well and I think that’s probably I think if you’re Denver I think that’s the big fear like how cute can we really get here like yes in a perfect world and I think you see trades like this in basketball more often than football but like you do the oh we’re going to trade back two spots we’re going to still get our guy and we’re going to out a second round piece that’d be awesome but I mean there is a world where the Rams just come up and snipe you and now you’re in Spencer Rattler territory or whatever that might be yeah no and I think they really like bonick I think bonix probably was their third rated quarterback right if not I I don’t think they stand Pat and don’t go get panic or don’t go get JJ McCarthy cuz like you said that the opportunity was there the opportunity was 100% there so I’m guessing he was their third ranked quarterback I love podcasting with you guys talking ball every single week having W you know texting back and forth on a Saturday and then going back to talk about it every week on the draft pod but then come draft day what interests me more is why guys who have one of 32 jobs in the entire world why guys who are paid Millions to do those one or 32 jobs that are coveted in the entire world thought that b Knicks was worth that pick and why maybe I differ on him right it’s trying to understand why would someone like aan Payton Wan bonck less so than why I wouldn’t have so let’s try and talk that through to an extent why if if you had to pick one thing in terms of why do you think that he is a Shawn Payton guy and then why are you skeptical and I know you’ve probably gone through some of this but I wasn’t necessarily different it’s a good conversation exactly to me it all comes down to the raw tools how Elite is the arm and the raw athleticism and that is really going to determine his ceiling and at 62215 keish the arm maybe doesn’t tick super duper Elite like I compare him to hers hurts to me in that final year at Oklahoma with Lincoln Riley there were some times where it was like [ __ ] he is showing me something that I didn’t see at Alabama in years prior you got to look for it a little more with B you got to see like there’s a throw against Utah where he’s falling backwards dead to right G it and is able to like get his guy to the end zone and then it’s the athleticism as a runner is this guy going you know how Dynamic is he in space is he Lamar Jackson I don’t think he’s Lamar Jackson no but he can move around is he Jaylen Herz and you know so it it’s really like assessing those raw skills and how does it pertain to how high is that ceiling is his ability to ultimately Ascend into a top 12 quarterback in the league cuz let’s say that in 5 years if he does if he warrants starting for the next 3 four 5 years then that’s a successful pick and it’s a successful pick but then in 5 years you’re going to have to make the tough decision of do you reinvest do I give him damn near a quarter billion dollars or am I position in the first place well no doubt or is a quarter billion going to make it so that your team has a cap to it because this guy is more like the 15 best starting quarterback in the league than the eighth and so it’s going to be hard when he’s getting this ma major chunk of my cap salary to them build a true Contender around you know I I I actually think maybe the opposite for that one because I feel like only quarterback though I think quarterback is the only position where your mental attributes can Trump your physical attributes a great so I feel like just like with Drew Breeze I don’t think he was maybe besides accuracy I don’t think he was the best quarterback in any abely right I think if you’re smart enough to handle sha pne’s offense can get the line where they need to go in protection can hit the small wins I think that’s what’s going to allow him to be a successful quarterback even Patrick Mahomes they talk about all his attributes as far as like his running ability and his physical arm strength like that he is smart on the football field like the way he is able to put it they able to put in so many new plays every single week that teams have to be able to deal with because Patrick Mahomes can handle it and so I think it’s like usually I feel like the smartest quarterback always wins yeah and if he can come in smart and uh you know between the years he can kind of survive and then the other thing we’ve talked about is it feels like the quarterback position in the modern NFL has really been about find a guy who’s athletic enough to overcome being you know behind behind the speed of the game mentally the first couple Seasons but to still make enough winning plays to survive those first couple years and then once your brain starts to catch up to to the speed of the NFL game and you’ve you’ve been able to get those reps then you could really have come together well and if you’re Shawn Payton and I think his his frustration with Russell Wilson were obviously pretty pretty public but I think if you’re you’re sitting and you’re looking at the situation you’re like I’ve got a 35-year-old quarterback who keeps taking negative plays like at some like I I can talk myself into this young guy who it’s like if if he’s not even doing that and he is just taking these little these positive plays he might not necessarily makeing the home run plays but you’re going to be more much more consistent as an offense you’re going to be much less you know erratic and I feel like that was the biggest problem with that Denver offense a year ago is yes you’d have the moments and you know Rush had some moments where he popped throwing the football and it was clearly better than the year before but it was still way too much one step forward two steps back and at this point like maybe you’re not taking three steps forward but you’re just consistently going one and a half steps forward well and you’re staying on time which is like that was really the thing about the offense the offense could not just stay on time so it was I can’t imagine what a nightmare it was to be the play caller for that Broncos offense last year but it wouldn’t have been fun MH and Jake you maybe aren’t a fan of B knck but you can attest to this it’s quite the change in narrative that we are now describing b knck as a responsible guy that can keep your offense on time because I remember [ __ ] you saw him in Boulder do throw a pass behind his head I me the guy is wild you know he has that to him so it’s can you find can you strike that balance you know I mean look when you look at quarterback and you look at guys like aggressiveness I think you would rather have the guy that you have to kind of reain in a bit rather the guy that you’re still like come on man you got to make these we saw that last year with where it’s like godamn man can’t you just like throw it away or just like can you just throw it up there one time just to give it a shot instead of just taking a sack or you know running around trying to make something happen that’s not there so that is the thing about quarterback that with B Knicks that you can look on and go okay if we can just reain this guy back like half a step a full step maybe we’ve got something there you go he I mean he’s uh Hey we’ve gotten you from like a two a four and a half in terms of the vibe scale look man the the reason why I didn’t want this to happen I just don’t the cap situation especially after the rust cap hit just doesn’t scream to me like this is a situation for a rookie quarterback next year they’ll have a ton of cap yep but we have to find players though we need players well they’ll have a ton of cap and all their picks next next year so if he pops at all that could be an intriguing uh place to come yeah yeah if he just has like a a good year or a cool year it could be really interesting I mean think of Mac Jones’s rookie year everyone was excited after that doesn’t take much true Davis Mills Davis people were hyped on Davis five six game stretch at the end yeah that’s exactly right I said some crazy things after that bonck doesn’t have an Ras score right no I don’t think he tested enough I haven’t checked I’ve just been going through first time in a while we got a George Payton pick that doesn’t have an R score yeah quarterback’s are a little different though chop Robinson to the Dolphins oo full speed that’s intriguing yeah Bradley chub and Jaylen Phillips already there it’s a great situation pass rushers yeah Todd are you on Ras guys uh R so no relative Athletic score they take like height and weight and 40 time and bench press and all that stuff com out to score yeah that way if you’re a DeAnthony Thomas and you’re super small you’re not getting boosted because you ran a 43 and so yeah it’s relative and George Payton’s got a lot of guys who score very highly in the RAS this wasn’t around back in your day Todd but with the power of the internet I was able to I play outside linebacker my first year in college it shows here that show I I didn’t I didn’t reg baby you know what I’m saying what’s funny is the 477 scores in the yellow the 10 yard split scores in the red they didn’t like but your 20 yard split was phenomenal it’s crazy is that crazy say and as a linebacker that’s as far as you dropping right 20 yard is all you need to do so look at you is quinan Mitchell still available for them the guy they were rumored to trade up at 12 to get wow that would be a steal for them than and then at 23 you would have the Jags who traded down with Minnesota who traded up to 17 to take Dallas Turner so um I don’t know what the Jags are doing they were kind of rumored to be a xavor worthy team they need some offensive heal I mean I know Xavier worthy would be a weird one thougher Aon Mitchell I would love there’s some stuff about him being a diabetic that’s weird that’s come out that he was like inconsistent off the field because of his diabetes so then you hope with the Jay Cutler situation where you get it leveled and he’s just fine right just treat it correctly yes yeah give him the proper medical assistance yeah and then gamble in this guy being a star yeah that sounds like the correct way to go about it Jake no I don’t know that anyone anything else stood out to me I could not believe six quarterbacks in the top 12 just nuts it feel I mean it is very validating in terms of like we do this draft pod every single week and one of the things we talk about is like when it comes to in investing in these positions like it comes down to quarterbacks receivers offensive tackles Edge and Corners yep yep premium POS this entire round I mean this is modern football like to a te to a te you don’t have any of the outline of like oh you know we had the running back still go top 10 like we you know we could add an Adrien Peterson back in the day and I I still think in Adrien Peterson goes top 10 in any class cuz that dude’s as should linian thomon Marshall faul like special running backs are still special running backs and should be valued as such Robson go top 10 last year that’s what I mean like this this year like this is draft nerd Central like if you just if you want to nerd out and follow the positions and even the halfway sound like you know what you’re talking about just follow the follow the tackles follow the edges follow the quarterbacks yeah that’s true follow the receivers that’s where all the money goes now 100% those Premier positions that can play the pass do you hate that Todd yeah it’s trash yeah yeah absolutely the NFL game still about stopping the run at its core absolutely and I think you need linebackers to do both yep like yep linebackers are undervalue but somebody got to guard Brock Bowers every once in a while or Travis Kelce and then we also got a tackle Derrik Henry or like Isaiah Pacho like or cover them coming out the backfield like linebackers might be the most undervalued position in football right now because you’ve never asked them to do more or cover more types of freaks like The Versatile tight ends the running backs coming out of the field that can do it all the weird like in between hybrid I type players that are running backers like I mean we felt that in Denver when you don’t have a quarter or running or line lineer that’s can handle these guys and the about is you like if Joe Al’s coming down to block you you still got to get off of that too like you can’t let him black you like you got to be able to do it all it’s tough It’s True yeah it’s funny these positions where you actually need to do more safety is the same way nickel back they’ve almost been devalued it’s like I can kind of find a guy who checks off all those boxes but maybe isn’t FR you think it’s just cyclical like do you think 10 years from now we go full circle and it just that becomes the notion with receivers cuz there’s so many freak athletes coming out of seven on sevens and stuff there’s so many of these guys that they become a dime a dozen and it’s like I don’t know maybe I I don’t need to invest 100 million in this receiver we’ll just take one of the eight guys coming out in the first round and you know we come back to valuing you know linebackers and safeties or something I don’t know Corner could be the same way MH we will never devalue the big men the big men will always be valuable and hard to come by talented athletic freaky offensive linemen and defensive linemen those will always be at a pre right they hard to find world and half of the 67 guys play basketball so they’re already cut up and then you got to find one that’s not 67 210 that’s 67 32 like yeah and it has that dog in it it wants to compete play in play out you know those guys are they’re hard to come by very few around the world yes 100% now we got to see do we have a pick on the here I’ve been looking I haven’t seen anything I wanted to see what the nuggets are doing here don’t tell me we have started okay oh don’t tell me don’t tell me okay we could we you get no it’s all good it’s all good it’ll get spoiled for me with that you watch the replays is that trying I quarterback they didn’t they took a flyer on a second rounder he was in the second round he was in the second round this year you wouldn’t get him in the second round no I can tell you I would have been more excited about Herz coming out of Oklahoma oh yeah no doubt we were Herz Believers though y also true he also had that Lincoln Riley stank on him yeah which you like you like yeah just 10 more picks to go nine technically Jags on the clock what’s the nightmare pick for the Chiefs here at the end of the round corle uh yeah man get the yak God M give them a give them a guy with great speed and I mean I feel like if you give them anything that can replicate what they lost with Tyreek Hill moving on that’s the one element of that offense that I feel like kind of went away I mean yeah Mahomes is still Mahomes they they’re actually a more consistent like between the 20s I feel like staying on St uh schedule offense than they were a couple years ago Mahomes has taken some of the erratic decisions out of the picture but all of a sudden if you just give him a freaking Ferrari on the outside that is can create in space and can beat you over the top and can beat guys in in the open field that that’s terrifying to me that’s giving a team weapons who doesn’t need weapons yeah they proved it this year like they’ve had even when guys are bad we got everybody we need we can find a way to win now they’re going to add another weapon to that it’s like you’re already winning the war and you show up and they got tanks too where’ the helicop where they get a tank well that speed from a vertical wide receiver really does open everything else up right like that’s a team that maybe doesn’t even need a speed threat to be any good at wide out just the the threat of having that kind of guy can go a long way though of course mle Hardman didn’t work out for him no but like even I mean for a guy like Kelsey just having him out on the field and having the threat of him going over the top like you can open some things up in the middle for a guy who’s maybe you know lost a step Kelsey’s still great obviously I mean he’s getting up there in age to me that’s that’s the scary one is that you get him that or Tom did Brian Thomas go yet no he’s still available lots of talent still on the board Thomas would make me a little worrisome too just a guy just proven proven guy over the top has the production I know the catch radius isn’t phenomenal but that guy would go from Jaden Daniel Throne to to momes that would not be ideal for uh the Broncos favorite picks thus far in the draft Todd I have a feeling you’re going to go ATL at number eight or you kind of question that fit for panic getting benched I question the fit but it lets me know just how good Michael penx is because they pick him and they didn’t even need him right they just like this guy’s too good to pass on we need him now I don’t care if he sits for a year or two he needs to be in our building uh so I I understand it don’t like it wish it would have fell a little bit more May 12 but it’s a good pick are you a big penx guy I take it oh without a doubt without a doubt I think he’s I think he’s the best quarterback in the draft period period you’re not the only person I’ve heard say that yeah I mean I may stand alone in that opinion but I’m saying why why uh the accuracy I think he had great receivers but if you look at where he’s placing the ball it’s 100% on point like my guy is catching it or it’s not being caught and it’s like falling right into their hands you know and so I just think that accuracy is what can allow him to really win um on Sundays and then we know he’s smart we know he handles the protection like he’s accurate he can handle the protection and he is the only other player to throw for or five 4,500 yards in back-to-back Seasons like I don’t know what more people needed to see as far as like I understand the medical but if we’re talking about latu latu is a you know one of the best defensive players he was right he was supposed to be done like they never play foot I feel like penx is the argument for him is just like okay but like did you actually watch him in a football game yeah and like I we can get into every little nerdy detail every he ran this he did this these are his Precision passing okay just watch the like the dude is just slinging the hell out of it always exactly where it needs to be he elevated his team in the in the biggest moments um I’m sure these are all points you’ve made at some point on the Broncos pods but it’s been a long show people might be tuning in at various points yeah yeah you’re so high on penx you would take you would have him as quarterback one Undisputed is that so much on pennic or do you have any hesitancy with Caleb Williams is there something you’re seeing there where you’re not so sure it translates um I think everybody’s I think everybody’s looking for Mahomes 2.0 I think Mahomes is in the class of his own I think even what Lamar Jackson does and Other M mobile quarterbacks is not what Patrick mahom does so I he’s just in a league of his own and for me I personally love great passing pocket passing quarterbacks who can put the ball where it needs to be so when I see pennick Do It um just like I saw pton do it or Drew Brees do it or Tom Brady do it like I love that more so than the you know the off Cadence throws they work but I like to see you just drop back know what you’re getting just fire a rocket and it goes for you know 15 20 yards like I like quarterbacks like that is there a reason you prefer that is that because as a player you felt that’s tougher to defend um and until Patrick Mahomes it worked the best like that was the staple for the longest you know so many great quarterbacks even guys like you know Philip Rivers or so many different names like that’s how you win football games you didn’t win with the off Rhythm you know throws but it’s working now but I still love you know great pocket pass and quarterbacks well in the question I mean so much of what is exciting about Caleb Williams and the plays you’re going to see people sharing is him running around throwing it off his back foot and the athletic of ility the fact that he is able to do those things is incredible Brian Thomas to the Jaguars at 23 they trade down and still get the fourth wide receiver in this class dang impressive I don’t know if I like that fit with Lawrence why not I just I would have liked a more intermediate guy I think you need a guy to stay on Rhythm More Than a big play yeah they did try that with Ridley yeah it just feels like the another one of you know many similar types of receivers that have gone down there and just kind of got buried in the DJ all these guys yeah well they traded down they could add a pick and maybe more of a route Runner lad makoni later on something like that he’s a fine lad yeah he is a fine lad no doubt this is my favorite pick in the draft so far though quinon Mitchell to the Eagles yeah I mean this secondary right now 22 that’s tremendous value you got Darius CJ Gardner Johnson um you might have a whole free safety says read blank and ship starting there now but now you have Quin Mitchell James Bradberry vonte Maddox Eli Ricks that’s a it’s a damn good secondary yeah and I mean highly criticized last year very yeah yeah and now they’ve got all that talent to come back uh this year and contend with the NFC no more Super Bowl hangover that often does Loom large what about you favorite pick yeah um I mean if I think if we’re going just based off how the board fell I would say the best value picks have been Bowers or um I like what Minnesota did as well Dallas Turner and JJ McCarthy McCarthy yeah with two trade UPS slight trade-ups but but I think you land two really solid pieces that make that I mean clear pieces that those team needed I mean Minnesota’s defense was a mess they couldn’t get off the field year ago now you had a versatile Edge rusher yeah it’s an off season you lost Daniel Hunter and KK cousins and you replaced them with JJ McCarthy and uh Dallas Turner could do a lot worse right and I mean you didn’t have to give up like a king Ransom to go up and do it you know you’re not you’re not doing the 49ers trade of three third or three first and a third just to go up and get the guy like 100% I I just think and am marus Mims so Cincinnati at 18 I think the the value there you get a an offensive tackle with great potential massive potential and you you don’t have to go up or lose any value no 100% I really like the Olu fashanu pick at 11 for the Jets they’re able to move down a spot and get a guy who you know at fashanu declared last year I think we were all in consensus that he would have been the tackle top tackle he’s the third tackle you still get him at 11 this year I just think he’s a franchise left tackle you you were talking about those Premier positions and how important it is in the draft and you can just follow those four positions to kind of see who’s going to go round one a guy like that with those kinds of chops in pass protection I kind of don’t care about anything else and you know when you’re committed to protect Aaron Rogers by any means necessary you can get a guy like that pretty impressive the biggest knock on fashanu Todd small hands under nine in wow that’s what she said yeah yeah that’s right which hey we should all get such good play um I just saw this on the timeline Nick sa I guess Nick sav’s on a Draft broadcast or something on the so he said that uh quinon Mitchell was Alabama’s number one guy in the portal last year he obviously never got in the portal this is a team that had teron Arnold and Kool-Aid mckinstry wow they lost the CSU too yeah I’ve never been more validated in being high on a G5 guy early and having it come to fruition no kidding well terion Arnold was playing safety you know they might have had to positions had to have a group that slid y it’s been corner it’s been corner and these guys are good but they’re not yeah I mean it does go in line with the corner preview and and everything even what did what he needed to do in my opinion JJ McCarthy has all the traits you’d want in a quarterback definitely no Bogies I didn’t ask if he has all the traits you’d want in a quarterback I’m saying did he perform above par below par or I me look he the TCU game Michigan’s year was uh but I mean he showed his ability throw to shake that off and just keep on balling out and he did that elevated his game in the playoffs too he did or against Alabama at least yeah aside from that pick that got called back thank God huh that one had that one sent you so hard I mean that was literally dja Vu I’ve and even that it takes a generational Prospect to get him to do it and a coad owner and there are very rarely things at quarterback yeah and even those sure things turns out sometimes not the shest of things laway sure thing I would say that panned out as expected Andrew Luck sure thing very good player worthy of the number one pick his career doesn’t pan out the way you thought that’s circumstance that’s not about the player but that’s the thing about sure things you know sometimes circumstances come up and even a sure thing isn’t a sure thing and also Trevor Lawrence sure thing has it turned out to be that way no I mean if if Trevor Lawrence wasn’t Trevor Lawrence I think he’d be talked about a little bit differently as negatively or positively negative I mean he’s one of the 12 15 best quarterbacks I agree which is pretty good but it C not what you hope for when you draft Trevor Lawrence right but it’s enough for him to not be considered a bust or anything it just you know he’s buying his time and I do think that there are things about B Knick that are sure I I I wouldn’t say like sure thing he’s an awesome quarterback but I don’t really have many doubts that he can again like run a system ready help I don’t know what he’s doing back there I don’t either uh but but like you know that there’s solid things that he can do like in terms of just getting somebody you can start day one B Knicks there’s a strong case we made that he’s number two on the list in this year’s draft panex bonex I would say kale Williams bonx but but I mean most ready to start yeah day one day one I think the toughest part about Caleb Williams is so much of and we’re kind of talking about this with Todd but got Sidetrack is so much of what excites you what big news in the Draft Packers believe is the Packers taking Jordan Morgan let’s go Pack 12 doing me right in the final year I can make that bet huh wow on top thank you pack 12 end of aner 4 one out for the homies 4 one out for the homies let’s see what other bets I got alive still gone but not forgotten gone but not forgotten the conference of Champions as it was once called I will I think with Caleb though with Caleb I less but again unless Shawn Payton wants him to make three reads in which case that’s just not on tape you know yeah I do think that there’s limitations I think he was going through his progressions a there’s like 10 more guys you could justify being the next guy well that’s the same with cornerback I think the first Corner went at 22 because it’s like yeah you know nowadays in college football you need like four starting Corners right that’s how you counter the spread offense so we have a multitude of wide receivers and Corners coming out of the draft every single year and you can wait on those guys that might not not be a bad strategy for the Broncos to kind of wait re three round four cornerback wide receiver hit it up then yeah is that what you do Henry the rest of the way now that you got bonck out the way what’s the Broncos draft strategies days two and three I think I think in a dream world you get Blake korm in the third I think I think that’s I think that that’s just like a special kind of running back who can make things happen like if you’re really leaning on this running game that’s how you really lean on the running game plus he’s so Shifty I think it gives you stuff after the catch I think there’s some Austin ekery type stuff right there his vision is awesome his vision is awes watch him make like auk you’re right that does help that does help but i’ look at that um definitely some receivers I consider there too um you know zavier Legette could be a first- round pick but again there’s this whole big tier if he’s sitting there then that would be a fun pick too um corner I’m a little less interested in because you’re a Riley Moss believer well you just have you have a third round pick in Riley Moss you got fourth round pick and deari you’ve got like the veteran who’s on just above a vet minimum are you really upgrading that immediately and if not would you do you really want another young guy who could pop or would you just want to trust one of those two to figure it out well is your second Corner opposite PS2 a bigger need than like your free safety and replacing Justin Simmons you know so I think Brandon line of defense pretty important I think Brandon Jones can play deep and I think alth when Kaden Sterns has played they’ve spent a lot of time with him like as the dime back or in the box cuz that’s how they got him on the field and colge he was a free safety yeah yeah he was fast super fast so that’s another spot where like if they take a safety it’s easy to see why but I think with Jones lock Sterns you’ve got a nice little three-man rotation if they’re healthy and if PJ plays like he did last year um and then you got a couple other young guys but I think the other spot though is Center yeah because you can get a starter I think the rookie Center rookie quarterback thing is always something you kind of hate but but that is a place where you could get a starter at a position of need especially if you’re trying to run the ball a lot well projected by many as the top Center in this class Duke’s left tackle Graham Barton who probably will have to go inside a little length deficient a bit of T-Rex arms he goes to uh the Buccaneers you love my scouting that one was so good that’s great like the fish some people have that problem that’s exactly right yeah not me yeah you come home you met someone at the bar think you can explain I’m sorry I’m just a little length fish you’re have to get closer they can’t get right Bros dis close yeah Bros disclos didn’t they say Center was like uh what was that stat they put out today about Center’s like hitting on the first round Center was like a 90% chance yeah like that’s crazy if you’re good enough Center to be drafted in round one you’re going to work out more often terrible pick for the Broncos in fact could be quite intriguing you do wonder if he’s a little uh Nick Bonito esque you also wonder if another an early day two pick is to trade your first round pick like I would have taken Drew Sanders as early as the late first and Marvin Mims was a guy I liked in the top 50 y but it’s just going to be a long wait before we can start zeroing in on those targets yeah uh Chiefs just traded up only a couple spots obviously but uh with the have they now learn their lesson dude I would never trade with again and they’re two wide receiver needy teams why would you let them jump you like that yeah I mean the bills might like what they’ve got okay scarest pick for the Chiefs is it Xavier worthy the new record breaker 40 time holder Corley still scares me more than worthy I don’t think they’ll take Corley luckily the pick is in had a chief fan tell me they would look at LAD makon and Ricky worthy yep yeah that makes sense but yeah it’s I mean that is I have my own skepticism about whether what worthy brings to the table actually translates at the next level in terms of like being a consistent receiver a lot of drops um but the dude can outrun anybody on the field at any given time does give you that element that I added talks better of just top end speed like even if he’s not necessarily getting the ball just having to account for him changes the geomet you know you’re changing the angles so with he like 178 lbs yeah he weighs about as much he weighs less than me at the moment no I mean 165 guys we talk about it from throughout Through The Years there are some dudes who he this is a non-f football athlete he moves different than football players move and it’s because he’s 511 65 and he’s the fastest guy to ever test at the NFL combine per Authority so you know you can stop him you can jam him and stuff but you you got to count for him and the spacing key and verticality he brings that offense is going to be uh tough to game plan against assuming he does in fact catch the football that’s thrown to him which was a major problem for him consistently and a major problem for the chief’s offense I mean they couldn’t find wide receivers who could catch the ball period yeah no that’s you almost wonder if it’s like a culture thing like how how is that whole team unable to catch a football and is Xavier worthy really going to whole like we have talent every spot in the trenches we’ve got all these studs everywhere we can just keep replacing guys all it takes is one or two bad drafts and any one of those teams that’s paying money to a quarterback they’re just cooked it’s hard to stay competitive in a league like the NFL man harder to stay competitive or get competitive stay competitive once you got paid a quarterback I don’t know I think May harder feels like it here yeah I could go either way cuz everybody that is competitive now has been competitive I don’t think there’s any real newcomers a quarterback yeah for sure yeah yeah it is a parody league so like the Texans Bengals can turn it around overnight sometimes but doing that is [ __ ] hard mhm mhm lions were in drop for a long time we’ve been in a drop for didn’t take a quarterback they didn’t take a quarterback and I know you can’t take a quarterback purely for the sake of taking a quarterback but if they are ever going to get out of this rut of mediocrity that they’ve been in this last you know seven eight years it’s going to have to be homegrown and they were going to have to hit on a quarterback at some point like I mean in the the history of this franchise the inability to not hit on a draft quarterb it’s just it’s held us back for frankly it’s amazing we’ve had this much sustained success without being able to draft quarterbacks pretty czy 100% yeah I mean helps when you get two first ballot Hall of Famers through something other than the draft very weird circumstance with both of those though you have way refusing to play for the Colts and a cad owner giving up on one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and he lands in Denver Y and the crazy thing is like if you were to go get like a Jared Burse for example it would have been fun and maybe that solves one of your problems but that doesn’t change that you still have this massive lack of talent everywhere like you you you go from like we have Pat zeran to pater tan hopefully Jared you know so like as much as you have to build through the draft you can’t do that overnight like it’s always going to take time you get your you get you let everybody across this roster compete you get to see all these young guys do what they can do and at the end of the year you got $80 million or more in cap space and you go spend big on whatever you want well and also
