  1. When you scratch the veneer of glitz and glamour here, you get down to the darker environmental and social impacts of these events. Whether it’s the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, WSL CT, there’s this undeniable hypocrisy and prioritisation of profit.

When a site is chosen to host the Olympics, it often undergoes a massive transformation. This includes the construction of state-of-the-art stadiums, housing facilities, and transportation infrastructure. However, this rapid urban development comes at a cost – the destruction of natural habitats, increased pollution, and a surge in carbon emissions. Not to mention the vast amount of resources and energy required to build these temporary structures, only for them to be abandoned post-games. It's a harsh reality that often goes unnoticed amidst the excitement of the event.

Let's not forget the social repercussions of hosting the Olympics. Many host cities have seen the displacement of local communities to make way for Olympic venues. This not only disrupts the lives of residents but also leads to a loss of cultural heritage and community ties. Moreover, the massive influx of tourists and the subsequent rise in prices often exacerbate economic inequality, leaving many locals struggling to make ends meet. It's a stark contrast to the unity and sportsmanship that the Olympics are meant to symbolize.

The WSL takes great strides on many of its CT stops to create a good PR image with One Ocean, which does good things, sure. However, look at the sponsors and the Carbon Emissions. How’s that coming along? On corporate sponsors, many of these companies pride themselves on their environmental initiatives and social responsibility. However, when it comes to the Olympics, they conveniently turn a blind eye to the environmental and social harms associated with the event. Why? Because the allure of marketing opportunities and financial gains overshadows their supposed values. It's a classic case of putting profit over principles, and it's high time we call out this hypocrisy.

As consumers, we have the power to demand accountability from these companies. By raising awareness, supporting sustainable initiatives, and holding corporations accountable for their actions, we can push for a more ethical approach to the Olympics and other mega-events. It's time to challenge the status quo and strive for a more sustainable and socially conscious future.
