hey o podcast here we go on a Tuesday the Tor Sam Grooms every Monday through Friday three o’clock appreciate you watching the show as promised now we told you throughout the offseason we’re GNA have legendary Buckeyes on and talk a little bit about the current Buckeyes with them and then about their career we’re joined by uh Justin Bourne the oldest of the Bourn Brothers today and at some point I’m sure we’re going to have all uh all the born Brothers on even mama’s boy Zach will join us at some point and remember if you’re hurt at work or in an accident let attorney Robert sh go to war forou atw for you.com Justin what’s up man thanks for coming on thanks for having me hey uh so we’re gonna first seg we’re gonna talk about the Buckeyes second seg we’re g to talk to you about your career you played one year at Michigan you transferred Ohio State you played at several teams in the uh NFL so we’ll talk all about that and then what you’re doing now in the second segment as well maybe it extends to three segments we’ll we’ll figure out out as we go along here but let’s go back to the end of last season at the end of the Michigan game was Michigan game was funny because we were doing this podcast Justin me Sam Fus and merker and your quarterback leaves and he says he’s taking players with you and you think the sky is falling and then all of a sudden everybody’s coming back and big star players are coming in what was just let’s just start with after the game against Michigan what were your thoughts of like holy hell how how does this team lose three in a row to Michigan where was your head at after that game I mean honestly after the Michigan game like I wasn’t too down on the team I mean I thought it was a hardfought game I thought either you know it was a tossup either team could have won I mean I think Ohio State easily could have won that game if a couple things go differently uh so it’s not like we were outmatched or or or outplayed it just you know it just wasn’t our day um you know I think for me you know the more disappointing uh game was the bll game you know I think after losing to Michigan and and not being in the playoffs um you know it’s tough you know this this Ohio State team is every year they’re they’re the best in you know one of the best in the country and they’re used to playing you know on on the biggest stage playing in the playoffs playing in the national championship and I think you know when they didn’t get that it was kind of a let down and to me the bowl game was the more disappointing you know and I think I think most of the co you know I know some of the coaches there pretty well I think you know they kind of felt the same way and I think that’s why you saw after that bowl game I mean they they made some changes yeah hey I want to ask you a question real quick and and get your take on this because Tor and I kind of uh we have differing in opinions let’s just put it that way uh interior lineman yourself give me give me your overall thoughts or critiques of the overall offensive line play from last year you know I mean I think they got better as the season went on um you know I don’t think the bowl game was their best game but I think if you look at where they started or where they ended I think they improved um you know there were some question marks had several positions to start the season they lost a lot of guys in the draft the year before uh so they knew that they that some guys were going to have to step up and and I thought they got better um you know offensive Line’s tough I mean offensive line it’s tough to recruit it’s tough to you know these guys get recruited out of high school and you know they they looked the part they act the part but you know I would say def Al line probably has the biggest bus rate out of any position uh you know recruiting Wise from high school to college and you know what’s funny Justin is you know we critique that offensive line and we want Perfection at Ohio State no matter what position it is right and it’s the offens you watch on TV and you really don’t know whose assignment is is the double to kick off pick up the blitz you just don’t know that’s why I don’t like Pro Football Focus because they don’t know the plays either but yet they’re judging players that’s why I just think Pro Football Focus is crap but with that offensive line you know you you go back to what the guys have done in the pros and it seems like Buckeye offensive linan whether it’s the third fourth fifth round those guys come out and you think of him in college you go all right they were all right and then when they get to the pros I mean they do a really good job we’ve had some impressive offensive lineman here yeah for sure we got we have some guys still playing you know in the league um you know at the highest level so for absolutely yeah what was it with the bowl game because I thought and I don’t know Sam if we disagree I just thought Josh frier uh struggled at times with maybe the quicker defensive ends but what was your thought I mean they really Missouri brought the kitchen sink you kind of had to expect that because Missouri’s defense uh you know pretty good during the season but they just had a hard time picking up the Blitz in that game especially the right side yeah I mean for sure and you know every game it’s so hard you know I mean those guys gaml I don’t know if you remember this game I W I was already I was in the NFL at the time I came back and watched it we had a byee but uh when Ohio State played Buffalo years years ago ay no one no one knew no one knew that kid he wasn’t even on the radar and he ate our lunch and it’s like who the hell is this kid and now you know now you know he’s one of the best best pass rushers in the country so you know I think it’s really hard you know you look at Missouri and be like how how how did they do certain things you know how did they expose us how do they make us look better but it’s it’s it’s so hard I mean it really is and and you know we didn’t play our best they came out and they were focused they were ready to go and for them for Missouri you know that’s the biggest Bull game they had played in and how long so I mean that was that was their National Championship hey just explain to everybody from an interior line because you see it every week in college football in the NFL where the guard will break off and either help the center or or help the tackle and then you see a lineman Blitz and then someone watching TV who doesn’t know says oh man the guard should have picked that guy up but you don’t know what the call was from a blocking standpoint with the off I just kind of explain that from an offensive lineman standpoint so when people are W just kind of we’re educating people here so when people see that Blitz and then a guard’s not kicking out and helping out you know because he probably doesn’t see it it’s assignment just kind of explain the the process and the line call with that yeah I mean so you know every pass protection is different and every pass protection assignments different so usually you’ll see the center call out the Mike linebacker and from then that’s how you identify the rest of the linebackers um but you know a lot of times you might be working to the will you might be working if there’s a a safety blitzing off the end uh you know every pass protection is different so a lot of pass Pros you know if the middle Lineback if we’re sliding um you know if the left side of the line is man on and we’re sliding to the right the the running back um could you know responsible for the middle linebacker so it’s so hard to in there there are also times where the defense brings too many guys you don’t have enough protectors so I mean there’s literally more defensive guys blitzing than you have offensive guys blocking and in that scenario you know you’re taught just to take the most dangerous the most dangerous person you know in in pretty much work inside out and you hope the quarterback gets the ball out but every pass Pro I mean every pass protection is different and what the assignments are who you’re working to what linebacker you know and a lot of it depends on what defense you know a lot of guy a lot of teams will run different different defenses so depending whether it’s third and long or you know first and 10 um you know they’re going to run they’re going to run a different defensive package which affects the pass protection as well correct me if I’m wrong here a little bit you guys didn’t run a like a Zone blocking or stretch scheme when you were at Ohio State under trust correct um so we did a mixture at Ohio State so we did have some Zone it well I wouldn’t say it was a Straight Zone scheme so when I was at Michigan for two I I played two years at Michigan it was a Zone I mean we they switched we were full Zone but Ohio State switched it up I mean we ran some Zone but Ohio State also ran a bunch of power I mean uh Jim Bowman loved the power 46 47 double team double team to three technique pull the guard in the linebacker and I mean just just straight power football but I would say the reason why I bring that up because I think one of the differences we’re going to see with Chip Kelly versus you the last couple years at least so I think there’s going to be a lot more downhill man on- man instead of this running s Hill turning up Zone blocking scheme so yeah I I think that’s going to be a lot better for the developing offensive line going forward you could tell me if I’m wrong obviously you played the position so I guess tell me what your thoughts are on the two different schemes and I guess what what type of scheme benefits what type of offensive line and vice versa you know they say Zone blocking benefits you know more athletic offens lineman power scheme you know is more power but I’ll tell you like me personally like I was considered a power more of a power offensive lineman I mean I was I was pretty quick but I love Zone blocking because for me as a guard if I was man on man with that three technique like that that to me I mean I love that and I was you know try to put that guy in his ass you’re one-on-one and you know the stret the Zone stretch is nice because you know if you’re running those guys outside the running back he can take it outside if there’s a hole or he can cut it back a lot of times when you’re running that zone when you’re running those guys all the way all the way outside and that running they running back looks like he’s going outside and then he cuts it in a lot of times there’s holes but I mean you know to me I like power you know goal line situations let’s run power you know if it’s first and 10 on the on the 50 or first and 10 you know on the on the 40 let’s let’s run Zone hey you’re pretty connected uh you and your family connected to this program at the end of the year did you expect as many coaches coaching changes we have because Ryan like Chip Kelly said at the spring game if you watched it J uh Chip Kelly says Ryan day’s a coach and even though I’m calling the place he’s going to have input just from your standpoint no R knowing Ryan Day how hard was it to step away for him I mean I’m sure it was difficult you know you’re you’re used to doing what you’re doing and changes hard no matter what it is you know whether it’s coaching whether it’s business whether it’s you know just daily life when you’re used to doing something I’m sure it’s tough but I think he made the decision that he thought was best for the team best for him I think it’s I think long term I think it’s going to be great because he can focus on he can focus on managing you know actually being a head coach and managing the team and getting involved with with all facets of you know when when you’re the play offensive play caller I mean you know yeah you’re the head coach but your focus is is with the offense you know you’re in the offensive meetings I mean you’re having meetings on what type of plays you’re going to call against the game plan um you know so with him not having to do that I think it’ll definitely free him up and I think it’ll be a benefit to the team and I mean Chip Kelly I mean who could you couldn’t ask for a better offensive coordinator than him I mean heck I completely agree with you there he they go from a head coach to offensive coordinator Ohio state that doesn’t happen very often I mean just voluntarily you know it’s not like he he wasn’t fired he just voluntarily stepped down as head coach and uh you know became offensive coordinator but Justin when those rumors can listen I’ll be honest when I’m wrong I have no I’m married so you do it a lot but I had like when those rumors were coming out I just wasn’t bu it just said why would a guy he doubted me Justin he doubted me the whole time break it though the internet had the CH I didn’t break it but I was the one that kept saying it could happen it could happen the reason the reason why I didn’t doubt it and I I’ll be honest with you I don’t follow like I don’t follow the the inner workings of the program that closely like I’m friends with a lot of the coaches I played with some of the coaches I’ll go to practice here and there but I don’t I don’t follow it that closely on a day-to-day basis but I did hear obviously I heard the stuff about chip and the reason I did believe it is because Ryan and him are super close really close and you know they go way back and they have a lot of respect for one another and you know I mean I think Chip’s getting older and this day and age with the nil stuff man I mean you just being a college football coach is hard enough you know you you there’s so much stuff you have to deal with with with coaching during the season with recruiting in the offseason it never stops and then for you to add all the nil responsibilities to it and you know have to be you know pretty I mean you’re not responsible but you are somewhat responsible for making sure that the universities uh you know the boosters are are raising enough money to get the type of athletes that you want and need in there I mean it’s it’s hard do you think schools are going to start to get it and and this is what I mean like Clemson has really never dipped in the transfer portal this is the first year Ohio States you know we’ve had transfers but really aggressively gotten not only kept their players but really got star players I mean we got two star players players from other teams uh and then there’s teams like UCLA where they let their defensive coordinator go across the street to USC without any attempt to sign them they let Chip Kelly kind of walk out the door they don’t invest in nil you got other programs Minnesota lets one of their top coordinators go to Michigan State it just seems that some teams in the Big 10 invest you know Ohio State Penn State a little bit Michigan uh definitely Oregon Washington USC but then there’s some other teams in this conference that it it’s almost like they’re getting their check from the Big 10 and happy with it without investing it back do you think more teams in this system are gonna start to get it and realize like if we want to be competitive we have to do more than what we’re doing now I mean I maybe some I I think when when the nil stuff first came out I I said right off the bat I said it’s going to increase it’s going to increase the disparities between teams I mean your teams like Ohio State your teams like Alabama LSU the teams that have a super strong fan base that have you know I mean obviously Columbus is you know Columbus is a booming city across you know compared to anywhere across the country it’s a booming City and the Ohio State Buckeye football team is is their that’s their NFL team you know I mean oh the Ohio State Buckey football is professional sports in in Columbus so you know I knew when that came out that it was going to benefit schools like Ohio State it was going to hurt some of those smaller schools and let’s be honest I mean schools like you know Northwestern schools like you know some of those schools like how how are they going to compete with the nil I mean it’s just it’s next to Impossible it was hard enough for them to recruit when there was no nil and there was no money exchanging hands but now I mean it it almost makes it harder for those programs and the thing is is what makes it even more difficult for those programs that they’re not willing to invest in the nil they recruit a kid you know Ohio State’s had plenty of three star recruits that weren’t highly recruited that go on to become Superstars well now as soon as you have that kid that maybe goes to Northwestern you know wasn’t recruited by Ohio State but it turns into a superstar sophomore year every school in the country is going to be wanting wanting that kid and he know he he knows he’s gonna have endless opportunities wherever he wants to go you kind of touched on something I wanted to ask you from a player standpoint because after tress and urban came in he changed changed how Ohio state recruit you know Tres was a Ohio guy and every now and then you get a guy from Florida Texas you know uh Pennsylvania and he would he would dip here and there but for the most part it was it was Ohio kids Urban came in and then started recruiting across the country and getting five-star guys and basically Urban didn’t really care if you were a five star or not he was a really good at mental manipulation where it was all about the team you either Buy in or I’ll the next man up kind of thing but how hard is it for a coach and we’ll use Ryan dayve for example when you get all these five star guys Justin are the not only the top guys on their team but they’re like the top guys in the state getting those guys to all right you might have to play special teams you might not be the starter where you had a nerd carrying your books now you’re on you’re on Scout team at Ohio State it’s not the same how hard is that for a player to be humble and then get those five star guys and mesh it to make it a team yeah I mean it can be hard and I think Ryan is very focused on making sure he’s recruiting and getting the right people in so you know I know I know Ryan’s big on um you know if you if if it’s a if the first question the recruit asks is how much money am I making on nil and I want to be the highest paid nil player in the country they’re not interested in that guy you know I Ohio state knows that they need to you know that those guys need nil money they need to be in the ballpark but they’re not interested in in in being the the school that’s going to pay them the most money they have the attitude that listen um you know you’re coming here to win na to compete and win national championships and to go to the NFL where the money you’ll make in the NFL will DF any money that you can make in nil so if you’re worried about making an extra you know signing a $2 million nil deal instead of a $1 million ni deal or whatever it is that’s not the guy that’s all that recruits interested in they’re not interested in recruiting him so I think they do a pretty good job of Towing the line on recruiting kid the right kids that are coming to Ohio State for the right reasons and not just coming to see how much money they can make in nil they’re coming to be part of a team to win a National Championship and to eventually make it to the NFL Justin where do you think and I think we probably all agree that the current nil situation or uh I guess parameters from which college football’s operating is not going to last going forward what do you think’s going to happen in the landscape in two three five years how how different do you think the game is going to look I mean compared to five years ago look how different the game already looks now so where do you think it’s going to be and and how long do you think this current system is going to last see I just don’t know what’s going to change it um you know the NCAA I think’s already stepped in and tried to change it and they were unsuccessful in it so I’m kind of like what what’s going to give um because I do think things have to change I mean I think you know uh the year I went into the NFL 2011 they had a new uh new CBA got signed you know the the right before that um you know and one of the things they did is there was guys there was rookies getting drafted that were immediately making more money and had more guaranteed money than veterans that have been in the league for 10 years and that were on her second or third contract and the NFL was like we need to put an end to that and I I kind of think the same thing needs to be happen with nil like I don’t think that schools should be allowed to recruit kids based and promise them certain nil deals like I think they should have to come in and prove themselves and once you come in and prove yourself hey you you you’re welcome to to sign any deal you want you know or that you can get uh but I think it’s it’s you know it’s literally I mean it’s turning into to high school recruits I mean that’s well some of these kids that’s the first question out of their mouth how much money can I make in nil well just it’s not even like free agency cuz in free agency you sign like a two three fiveyear deal or whatever is it’s turning into a yearly thing where guys will play a year and go all right I’m not happy I’m gonna get a better deal I’m gonna go somewhere else well I I think all the co I mean I think all the schools realize it’s out of control but it’s like who’s going to step up and change it I mean unless they do it from a conference level and you would really have to have all the conferences Buy in you know you literally have to have 100% Buy in or you go to a different solution than the NCAA because the NCA prove they can’t do anything about it or the federal government steps in which I don’t see happening oh no no no government can’t run any keep him out of it as long as possible trust me trust me I know but I’m just saying I just don’t I mean you know I I don’t I don’t see a solution to it so I think until till something happens it’s just going to be the Wild Wild West hey now I always say this about and we’re talking with Justin Bourne and we’re gonna take a quick break here and then we’re going to talk about his career when I always say this about sports if you’re going to make a move move on for a quarterback or a coach have to have a plan and there’s a lot of people out there who say oh Ryan Day lost to Michigan three times and they didn’t make the playoffs last year and they want you know there’s some Buckeye fans who want I’m not one of them but some people want Ryan day gone or say he’s on the hot seat if they happen to I can’t see them losing to Michigan four years in a row but if it happens if they don’t make the playoffs is Ryan Day on the hot seat I don’t know who you’d get who’s better than Ryan day I think he’s one of the top three coaches or top five in college football but do you see like Ryan Day actually on the hot seat if things go south at this team I mean I don’t see I don’t see how Ryan can be on the hot seat I mean yeah you look at yeah he’s 0 and3 against Michigan okay I mean Ryan Ryan is I think one of the best coaches ever coached at Ohio State I think you know people ask you know I think you know I played for tres obviously and and Tres was was really good at some things Urban was really good at some things they were on Far Far sides of the spectrum and I think Ryan is like the perfect mix of them both um you know he has the best attributes of trestle the best attributes of of urban kind of in one package and I mean I don’t see how he could be on the hot seat I mean if you know maybe because of the pressure so high at Ohio State and listen Ohio state has the greatest fans in the country but they’re also the toughest fans in the country and when you’re winning you’re the best thing since sliced bread and as soon as you lose especially when you lose to Michigan you’re a piece of and yeah you need to you’re You’re gone you know so I I I think he understands more than anyone the expectations um he un he wants to beat Michigan worse than anyone I think you know the thing that’s tough for him is is we’ve all been there like when you want something that bad and that’s all you can think about sometimes you start to overthink and but I tell you I don’t see any chance that that we get beat by Michigan this year with this team with these coaches and what they have up there and with it being a home game and with as much motivation as we’re going to have I think obviously the season hasn’t started we don’t know what Michigan looks like but I think we kicked their ass I just took one about an hour ago that’s what I think they’re gonna look like um Nick Nick D wants to know Justin uh we got the chat going on he wants to know if you remember coach Doug castle and Coach Stan Jefferson uh Doug was his neighbor and he’s known coach Jefferson since he was born do you remember those guys oh yeah I I remember them well uh Doug Castle was a class Checker and Stan Jefferson was like the head class Checker so those guys uh I was I was known as uh I didn’t always go to class so uh I got escorted by by Bob Mansfield Doug castle that that whole crew awesome we’ll take a quick minute break we’ll come back with Justin Bourne and just talk about uh we know he’s a pickron guy but just the recruiting at Michigan I know Justin you probably told the story a lot of why you left Michigan but we’ll get into that a little bit and then talk about his NFL career and then what he’s doing now the born brothers are all over the place we talked to Justin Bourne about his football career in 60 been nice enough to hang out with us on this Tuesday afternoon so Justin we know you’re a Pickerington guy uh tell us about your high school career you like ninth grade Varsity did you play defensive tackle outside of offensive line tell us your about the early years of your football career so my freshman year at Pickerington we were one high school um they we split into two high schools my sophomore year so my freshman year I did play uh on the varsity team uh started some games for him we went pretty far into the playoffs uh end up losing to masselin um and that’s honestly that’s when I I started to get recruited by by Ohio State I had a scholarship offer um after my freshman year and they were your first scholarship offer they were my first so they it didn’t deter them at all that your dad went to Michigan at all no I mean I think if anything they were trying to you know get a jump on it and they really wanted me I loved Ohio State to be honest with you I love you know coach fickle was my recruiter um you know and I love the whole staff and I loved Ohio State in general Michigan was actually they were a little later uh to offer me I think they offered me sometime my sophomore year okay so how many recruited you as an offensive lineman yeah so back then I think now they I think now they recruit more based on position but back then they recruited um they recruited uh based on geographic area in fickle head Central Ohio because he was a theales kid so he just gots that over so talk about the rest of your career you play guard tackle did you play any defense at all uh in high school yeah yeah in high school I played I played tackle offensive tackle primarily and defensive end okay do you remember now you to told us uh you know about fickle offering you first do you remember high school games of coaches assistant coaches being in the crowd watching you I don’t I mean honestly I I never really paid much attention I mean I I remember like getting recruited I I had like 70 scholarship offers I mean I would get letters from every you know back then you know USC Miami Florida LSU Oklahoma I mean all the big I had scholarship offers from all the big schools so they would send letter they I don’t know if they still do that now but they would send letters in and then when they offered you the head coach would call position coach would call and uh you know they would come into the school sometimes too and offer in person so there was coaches in in our school all the time head coaches assistant coaches in our school all the time and uh the my high school coach at North hadn’t ever really had anyone recruited before so it was kind of kind of all new to him but um but it was cool I I told every school right away um I did I didn’t take any off I took one official visit to Michigan I was already committed I committed to him uh my junior year in in high school um but I told every school I was like listen I really appreciate the offer but I’m I’m gonna I don’t want to waste your time I’m G to choose between Ohio State or Michigan so I I knew right away I was gonna go either to one of those two schools so you go up what 2006 Michigan uh 2006 was my first year at Michigan I graduated yeah I graduated early I played in the US army All-American Game in January of would have been January 06 and then soon as that was over flew up to Michigan okay so it was the 2007 season or no I’m sorry 2000 no no it was January of 06 so it was the 2006 season the first Ohio State Michigan game okay my freshman year was number one number two okay and so your freshman year didn’t you break your leg was it your sophomore year or your freshman no it was my it was my freshman year so I was actually competing for a starting I I was I probably would have got the starting position as a true freshman at Michigan and I got rolled up on by uh by backup nose guard it was like 350 pounds snapped my fibula and got a high ankle sprain so I was out for like the first four weeks and then uh rehabed came back and then I ended up starting I think two games so they did they did did they say to you we want you to red shirt after you broke your leg no no they don’t want shirt they they played I so once I came back I was I was the six lineman so if anyone got hurt so literally any tackle any guard the center got hurt I was the I was the one to go in and then they would Shuffle I wasn’t going to play tackle but they would move one of the guards to tackle and I would play guard okay did you play in the one versus two game give us your your memory of that game CU that was when it comes to this rivalry I don’t know if there’s you know listen I didn’t I don’t know about like 1947 or anything like that right even though people think I’m that old uh but to me that that game is the game right when you look at that’s the game man to play in that game is even being on the sideline it’s got to be unbelievable yeah it was so that game um I did not start that game um but that I mean that game was crazy and what’s even crazier about that game was Bo shackler gave us a speech gave the entire team a speech after practice the Thursday night before the game uh he was supposed to talk to us on Friday before we left um to go down to Columbus uh but he told uh he told Lloyd car he’s like I’m not feeling that great coach I I I want to talk to the team after practice today so he talked to us gave I I wish Frick I wish I would have recorded it um because it was I remember it just being a phenomenal speech and then he died the next night uh it was it was crazy it was one of the one of the few times in my life that I’ve seen my dad cry when Bo died yeah you know there’s a lot of respect there despite the Rivalry I mean when you’re talking about Woody and Bo there’s a lot of respect there when do you remember when Lloyd Carr told you he was coming just were you kind of like oh my God man this is like bo bo shencker well so I I knew I knew Bo pretty well Bo was one of the reasons I went to Michigan because Bo I mean my dad and Bo were super close and Bo had an office up in up in the facility so we would my dad would take me up there all the time and I remember Bo taking his fist and pounding it on a desk he goes God damn it Boren how can you even think about letting your son go to Ohio State like he was so mad that I was even considering going to Ohio State but there it’s funny you said I mean there is so much mutual respect because I went to Bose funeral with my dad and Trestle and Bowman a bunch of the Ohio State coaches were actually at his funeral so I mean it just shows you it is the best rivalry in sports they you know when you play each other you hate each other but after the game you know and and times like that there is a lot of mutual respect that’s like the Spielman story when has told his dad I think his dad’s Sonny was coach at masselin right and the the story was Spielman tells his dad that he’s going to Michigan and then spielman’s Dad says no you’re not if you’re going to Michigan you’re getting the bleep out of my house you’re going to Ohio State so back the old school guys man were really like that doesn’t even I’m out of your mouth so I always tell the story that I hate Michigan more than I love Ohio State I can tell the story like that I remember looking at potentially going to a grad school after college after my undergrad at Belmont and I sit down with my entrepreneurship chair and I say hey here’s what I’m thinking about doing where do you think I should go his first school out of his mouth was hey Michigan has a really good business school you should look at doing your NBA there I look at him Dr Cornwall I said Dr Cornwall if I’m going there I’m paying for it and it ain’t happen because I know if I come home and tell my dad that’s where I’m going it’s coming out of my pocketbook at that point yeah yeah and who wants to pay for college come on if you’re a kid hey so long story short count my blessings at that time wasn’t trying to start racking up dead at that point yeah so Justin long story short Lloyd Carr leaves Michigan goes against the grain of the tradition of the school and brings in uh Rich Rodriguez who’s kind of a clown uh and so that was when they brought in Rich Rodriguez to you it was all right I’m not gonna play for this guy it wasn’t that I mean I I knew I I it wasn’t that right away I was disappointed in the hire right I was like really Rich Rodriguez and then I met the guy and yeah I mean I I was like this guy guy seems like a clown and even more than that uh the my position coach that that he brought in I mean I I him and I did not see I couldn’t stand a guy I mean he was just an arrogant just talked about himself all the time you know didn’t you know wasn’t about the team wasn’t about the players it was about himself talked about you know he played college football messed his life up and that’s all he’d ever talk about and made bad decisions and so I told my parents um we we met like we had we had a couple Spring ball practices and we had I think it was Easter and we had a break and I was meeting my parents up at Kalahari in sanduski and I told my parents I had told them before I was like you know I one of the main reasons why I went to Michigan to be to begin with was obviously Bo I I loved coach Carr but the offensive line coach um Andy mhler was the best offensive line coach I’ve ever had in my life I mean he was he was so that was Gary’s kid that was Gary’s son and he was I mean he got the he got the most out of his players he was just he was a great coach and he was actually my coach for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL so he he ended up being the offensive line coach for the Ravens I think it was the offensive line coach for the Browns for a bit um but I mean he that that’s the main reason why went to Michigan is I loved coach mhler um so once he got fired and they literally it was before our bowl game against Florida which by the way in ‘ 07 that was the season we lost to appy State and then we beat Urban Meers Florida team in the Capital One Bowl the same season um which was which was crazy um but before that bowl game he comes in lines up all the coaches and fires them one by one like didn’t keep a single coach um so that that pissed me off and then we just get going through the winter and I just the more and more I’m around you know the offensive line coach and Rich rodm like the more more I dislike these guys so I’d been telling my parents listen like I don’t think this is the place for me like the culture just has gone to it doesn’t seem like Michigan the place I I committed to play for and then by the time we got to by the time we got halfway through Spring ball I met my parents over Easter weekend and I said listen I said uh I’m either going to quit football and come work for the family business which I’m fine with doing I was always I was always more passionate about the business and I was football I love I love the business I was good at football and I played it but I was never as passionate about it so I said I’ll happily come back get in a family business and be done with football or I’m going to transfer like your choice you tell me um and they’re like whoa whoa whoa you know let’s just try to get through Spring ball get through Spring ball so I went up to the first practice and the offensive line coach I forget exactly what he did but he was he was screwing with us trying to be a hard ass and threatened us with something and I just I walked off the field I said screw this I’m done and I called my parents and I said hey I’m I’m done like I’m I’m quitting and uh so I went and talked to Coach Carr uh let him know because he had an office you know in another building over there let him know what was going on and um yeah that was that so when you go to Ohio state was e with the Rivalry I guess well open arms right away with teammates he it was it 100% was and give give Alex Boon a beer and go let’s chug it bro I was roommates with Boon my first year one yeah trust me yeah oh man we had had plenty of good nights that’s one thing that’s one thing I could say about Ohio State I can’t say that I became a better football player when I came to Ohio State I probably became a worse football player because my alcohol consumption increased by a thousand per. you mentioned it tell us I know I know in having talked with Zach a little bit and playing around the golf with him tell us a little bit about what you uh and the brothers are doing right now so we have multiple different businesses Zach runs our our trash our waste Hauling Company trash business which most people are probably familiar with around town um I run our uh thirdparty Logistics Freight brokerage business um I recently just started an asset-based Trucking Company a warehousing business and a uh limousine and party bus business called Limitless limo so got a bunch of different irons in the fire nice nice is that the family business no the limo company is me and a buddy of mine the but the the logistics company is the logistics company is hey you know you uh when you got out of school two time All-American right uh or no no no no sorry uh second team All-American two time Big 10 yeah right Y and so what was your thoughts about getting drafted and playing because you said you had no problem going into the family business and I think you right off the top of my head I think you played like three four years in the league League were you hesitant to go to the NFL at all no I wasn’t hesitant to go to the NFL like I mean I and you know I I was excited to go to Baltimore because I knew my offens old offensive line coach was up there and I I really respected him but you know I I don’t I probably you know I didn’t commit myself you know I I kind of you know I don’t want to say I have regrets about some of the stuff I did but you know I was so focused on business it’s all I cared about it’s all I wanted to do so you know I would fly home and do stuff for work instead of you know really most of those guys in the NFL listen like there’s nothing they can do and make as much money as they will playing and um you know I always had the mentality well if the NFL doesn’t work out I can go make a lot more money in business and I can’t in the NFL anyway screw it and that was probably the wrong attitude to have I should have had the attitude that I need to you know dedicate myself watch film work out be in the building all the time but I was a young kid and I thought I had everything figured out and I was like I I don’t you know I didn’t really care I mean football was one of those things that like I said before I was good at but at the time I wasn’t you know necessarily super passionate about and now that I have kids myself and I’m coaching them in football now is when I look back on it and say you know what like I’m a I’m a freaking dumbass I should have I should have applied myself a little more and you know you played with Zack how many years at Ohio State two did you mess with him as far as hazing screwing with him no I actually protect I mean he might tell a different story I actually protected him I was I was a a good big brother now when he was younger it was a different story but now when he got to State I looked out for him he’s the Middle Brother correct or C baby brother he he’s he’s mom’s favorite though Sam he’s a Mama He’s a huge mama’s boy don’t I’m gonna wear him out if I play in that outing with him again this year that will that will be a tool in my in my toolbox he did did when it comes to that who out of all the brothers we know jacobe had a chance to play in the NFL and he wanted to go to the business did Zach have the most passion to play in the NFL Zach wanted to play in the NFL more than anyone and I mean Zach wanted it so bad that my parents the only reason Zach’s in a trash business is my parents told him like after his he like went to some training camps and like never made the team long he was never on a team long term but he would just work out all the time like that’s all he did is work out and my parents eventually had to tell him they were like hey Zach like you know you can keep training but you need to try to have a plan B and that’s when he originally that’s when he originally got involved in the trash business because he was forced to I mean he growing up like you know we that Landscape Company blew up you we sold a landscape company in 2020 when we sold it it was massive but growing up it what you know it was just midsize company so like when it was snow when we were younger like we’d all hop out we’d be in trucks plowing you know Kobe would be doing sidewalks I’d be out for 30 hours you know Zach would Zach would have no interest in going out he’d be at home with Mom making cookies and drinking hot chocolate oh boy oh I’m gonna wear him out he he he wanted he wanted nothing to do with the business so they told him they’re like listen Zach you got to do something so they like kind of dipped his toes into it and then I think he started you know as as he started growing and you know the competitiveness of it I think he kind of he kind of got into it a little more and he’s done a great job he’s taken it and ran with it he’s done a great job but it was tough at first he did not have any interest all right so well last one for you and we appre I appreciate the time man I really it’s been great and people are commenting and they’re loving this stuff when you look back like a highlight of things that make you smile about your career at Ohio State what pops up for you uh beating Michigan two times you know it’s like when you when we were talking about the Rivalry before you know when I was at Michigan I can’t say that I hated Ohio State cuz I did it I mean I I really liked Ohio State and I almost went there um so like when even when we played them you know when it was one verse two in my sophomore year uh you know I I started in that game um I I I didn’t hate Ohio State but after everything that H after everything that happened once I got to Ohio State I freaking hated Michigan I mean I the first year we went up there and I mean I’ll never forget I that was that was the craziest game of my life I was so jacked up for that game walking into that Stadium it was crazy uh we got a chat real quick from Jared hey here’s some money guys I’ve had a rough few days here of late Long John Silvers is an option at this point uh Justin good seeing you and hopefully Sam and Tor will bring you over to my tailgate this fall no Jared you should want to go to Justin’s tailgate if you have a tailgate like Justin you don’t leave that tailgate right all I know if if our man from Amsterdam is down that bad the last couple days that he’s even considering Long John Silvers after what it did to him the last time he ate it oh boy D here’s a here’s a great story I have to do a wellness check yes Justin you like this story okay so I’m I’m working it was common manat Tor show on 97.1 to fan and one of the clients was like Long John Silver but it was like an ad agency so it was like Taco Bell Long John Silver a bunch of fast food restaurants young Brands and I made a joke or I I said he asked me like hey it was my anniversary said what’d you do last night and I said I took my wife out for seafood and he goes Hey Big Spender Long John Silvers huh and then he moved on right and then Long John silers called and like pulled all their advertising it was like what it’s not we didn’t say like Long John Silver’s a or anything like that he just said hey you big spender Long John Silver and then they took it as an insult who doesn’t like hush puppies come on that’s hilarious hey dude I appreciate your time we’ll together soon sounds good so much a quick break what’s on X next on the oov podcast it’s torque for happens though you Gotta Be You Gotta Be careful with being out in Vegas in the sanitation uh industry don’t you like Get bonked over the head get put in a hole out there in the desert somewhere isn’t you’re Spotify just hit a little uh follow there or like I don’t know how it goes on the Stream services but whatever the option is hit the follow search the OV podcast if you enjoy listening to us on the streaming services uh so what’s on X let’s start off Sam uh Josh Newberg I think Ohio state has become one of the Front Runners David Saunders had another visit to Columbus this guy is a ma we’ve talked about him before a fstar massive tackle I’ll believe it when I see it as much as I like to hear that I I don’t know how much Merit or truth there is to any of those you know until you’re here until you’re signed on the dotted line you know I don’t know how much I believe it I think there’s some truth to it when guys decide to take second visits somewhere sure I think I think one visit is like Justin mentioned earlier in the show he had 70 um different scholarship offers I think a visit to visit I think when you start looking at a place a second time that means you’re really interested in it I don’t know how many second visits you do and it’s almost one of those where I want to make sure I’m making the right call if I’m visiting a play second time so I’m going to be a little bit more optimistic on this one and say hey if you’re visiting a place the second time on an official visit I think that’s good news so that’s fair I’ll give you that that’s fair yeah I’m gonna put a a smile so turn that frown upside down Sam uh Cleveland Cavaliers on X round two schedule is here I can’t believe there’s tickets still available for this one but you got game one tonight then game two on on Thursday and no one Sam no one is giv the Cavaliers any shot in this I was watching uh what’s the wilbon and Kornheiser Show pardon the interruption yes there was a fill in um coris Kornheiser wasn’t there it was a fill in a guy who covers like basketball for like the New York Post or times or something and they were talking sweet now granted for and I’m a big I’m a big um the best players in the NBA you usually win that series and you could say well Jason Tatum might be the best player the way Donovan Mitchell is playing right now you know dropping 50 taking this team on his back uh I get that Boston has better uh perimeter defense with their guards it’s a different look team than what Orlando’s bringing to the table you know they’ve been to the NBA finals but they’ve also been boun Sam they’ve also been the team that everybody thinks going to go to the NBA finals and have been bounced we have seen in these playoffs Denver we’re going to get to them in a little bit in an incident that happened at last night’s game but Denver’s down 02 losing two games at home I love it personally and I get good vibes when all the experts say there’s going to be a sweep because remember Sam in Phoenix and Minnesota Colin cards the ESPN’s the Draymond or not Draymond Kendrick Perkins all of them said the Suns will sweep because they beat Minnesota three zip during the season to me when the NBA odds makers say that Boston’s gonna destroy the Cavaliers that makes me think this is going to be a competitive Series yeah and I I think the takeaway and you’ve already touched on it is if I remember correctly after the last two postseasons they’ve been talking about how they need to break up the Tatum and brown combo because they’re not getting it done and they continually lose series that they shouldn’t be losing so you know I there’s a you’re in it right now you’ve got a puncher’s chance just go out and play your game let the cards fall where they may don’t take this defeat his attitude going in even though all the prognosticators that are often more wrong than they are right are saying you’ve got no chance in hell yeah and for the Cavalier fans out there and I and I’ve heard this with Craig Carton show today like Craig Carton and it’s something we’re going to get in tomorrow I know you’re off Sam but the poll we didn’t do a poll question today because we had Justin Bourne but you know the poll question tomorrow is what what athlet star athletes that start with the small Market teams finish their careers there because Craig carton’s convinced Anthony Edwards is gonna go to New York or La you know he he oh he’s never staying in Minnesota and a lot of Cavaliers fans are convinced that Donovan Mitchell is Gonna Leave Cleveland here’s the thing Cavs fans don’t even focus on that right now these playoffs the there it’s kind of like a new wave of NBA greatness going on right now Steph Curry’s getting old uh Kevin Kev Durant got bounced again in the first round we know LeBron is what 39 years old he’s no longer the force that he once was right so you see like Anthony Edwards explode you see Donovan MCM Mitchell explode don’t worry about Donovan MC Mitchell joining the Knicks we’ve heard everybody Under the Sun is joining the M Knicks this is Donovan Mitchell’s chance to shine I’m curious if Allen’s going to play I don’t know that might be out and I missed it someone in the chat can help me uh he’s been out missed the last couple games in the Orlando series with a rib issue but this is Donovan Mitchell’s chance to go from a great player to Elite status because if they Sam if they even win this round because it was the first time they’ve they’ve advanced in the playoffs since 1993 since a non- Lebron team right this is Donovan Mitchell’s chance to stamp Elite player on his resume if they beat the top seed you can’t tell me Donovan Mitchell’s not motivated to do that well I mean look what he did in the second half of that game seven you know it seems like he’s been criticized for not showing up at the big moment and then the guy set himself on fire so yeah absolutely this is this is where and how legacies are created so grab it by grab the bull by the horns and let’s roll yeah I I I really like the Cavs chances in this one uh you know I know Allen’s question but I thought the rule was that you have to say by five o’clock whether a player’s playing or not I’m not sure I I thought I read that somewhere so we’ll find out uh after we get off the air for this one um all right this one was weird last night if you watch that Timberwolves in Denver game uh assisted to the regional manager onx not once but twice Jamal Murray doesn’t get suspended for throwing that heating pad onto the court during a play the fix is in agree uh they were frustrated uh Carl Anthony towns almost trips over that damn heating pad the Denver Nuggets bench tells the referees that a fan threw it out there it took Minnesota the Minnesota timos went to the referee and said how many fans have a heating pad and bring it to a game to throw to me throwing something like that on the court when you’re pissed off and a player could trip on it Jamal Murray should be suspended for a game the NBA will do nothing I don’t know if they’ll find him I haven’t heard any followup from that maybe there’s something since we did prep from this this press or this uh podcast in the last couple hours I’m missing but Sam you can’t throw a heating pad on the court to try to you know not try to injure someone but out of frustration but this is Cav fans can back me up if you watch the NBA Playoffs that technical foul against Anthony Edwards in game one was ridiculous he didn’t even talk to the guy and they light him up for a tea the officiating in every damn Series has been awful it just makes me question this league more and more about the fix being in on uh good for the Timberwolves last last night they kicked the living out of Denver so no matter what the refs could do there was no doubt in that one these refs have D Sam these refs there needs to be some type of investigation into the financial uh records of these NBA officials because you can’t tell me they’re not they’re not doing I tried I tried watching a little NBA basketball last night and I couldn’t freaking take it it is I I’ll never knock great I think it’s been I think series have been great I’ll never knock anybody for you know what they like what they don’t like but I dude I can’t get into it I tried and you want to talk about getting frustrated so you have the the Denver Nuggets defending champ pretty good all-around basketball team um they’re losing to 20 by 26 points at home and they what scored 35 or 36 points in the I think it was 35 points in the first half like are you kidding me yeah they scored it was uh 44- 40 in the first half of Saturday night’s game so both teams look at uh the first half of Orlando and Cavaliers in game seven that was low scoring so uh in Minnesota by the way did it without Rudy gobear who uh was in Minnesota his wife had a baby the day before I thought he would play but he’s staying uh with his wife so they did it short-handed Bleacher Report on X Mavs announced they signed Jason kid to a multi-year contract the Mavericks by the way advanced in the NBA Playoffs as well that makes sense trying to lock him up for uh to for so he doesn’t have to do an interview with LeBron and you know I think that’s a good fit too because he played there as a as a player right yes he did uh more whats on X uh Dove Cleveland uh says the C this was uh going around social media yesterday and this morning the Cowboys being interested in a trade for Steelers n Harris is clickbait by the way if you missed it n Harris fifth year wasn’t picked up Sam I’m not a for you Steeler fans out there I am not a fan of how they do their running back rotations I’m just not um I understand why they’re not do because Naj Harris isn’t a number one back they rotate their backs there in Pittsburgh um I understand why they didn’t pick up their fifth year option and for him it’s a it’s a Prov me year because if he does well they can always resign him uh I just have a hard time believing that the Cowboys are going to go into the season with Ezekiel Elliott your number one running back no I completely agree and I mean they they’ve got so they don’t really have D doesn’t have a number one they’ve got a guy that’s on his you know probably last two holes of his 18 18 hole career and then you got another guy it’s probably a solid number two somewhere so you know maybe they take a shot I don’t know but you know I I’ve also questioned some of the moves Jerry Jones has been making because I I’m of the belief he might be gearing up to sell the sell the franchise I don’t know by the way uh we did a blue jacket season of pain recap on the new YouTube channel youtube.com SL Ohio versus everyone if you want to check it out I bring that up because NHL Stanley Cup player uh playoffs viewership goes now in all fairness in years past this is a fact the Stanley Cup finals have lost to repeats build a bigger B Better Burger on the Food Network so the NHL has struggled in ratings I think it has everything to do by the way the Toronto Maple e Bruins first round game seven 3.2 million people the most watched first round game since 2012 I think this has everything to do Sam with being on ESPN and getting the coverage NHL wanted to take the money when they should be on ESPN absolutely and that was going to be my point is what what has changed in the last two years that you’re seeing this surgeon viewership it’s easier to find right it’s not Buri like where is NBC Sports or the versus network is the question I would ask when I would go to a bar and say hey I want to watch this hockey game yeah so it makes and I will say that the nice thing is if you do have the Disney Hulu and ESPN plus bundle um you can basically watch any any hockey game that’s not blacked out through the app so uh that’s a that’s a pretty nice feature as well and it it’s the games are a lot more accessible than they used to be which surprise surprise means you have more people watching yeah it was a smart move for the NHL to do this uh I didn’t like the money grab for a few extra million dollars and plus when you’re in bed with ESPN that means your highlights are going to be on Sports Center and not buried to like ESPN news well they don’t um they don’t advertise the n and they ESPN doesn’t run a bunch of ESPN advertising in basketball or NBA specific shows because they really like the viewership and the sport and the numbers are raging it’s because they’re invested in its success so of course they’re going to run anything they can to pop the yep uh one more quick NHL note from John boerr you can’t see it in the background though Sam they arrived in New Jersey this is a mock draft lottery and Blue Jackets the fourth worst but you’re saying we’re picking number five huh that’s well look at the screen I’m gonna keep this here San Jose the artist formerly known as Phoenix number two Chicago Anaheim and Columbus number five the odds of the Blue Jackets moving up in this NHL lottery is the same as me losing 10 pounds by tomorrow two things that are not gonna happen you want to talk about fixed if Chicago wins this again I’m I’m officially out on the legitimacy of the NHL draft you should have been out many years ago I’m fully aware New York Post on X Disney to cap Marvel output movies three per year to focus on quality um listen I hate the Marvel movies I think they suck but calm down over there you like Marvel movies I so I the same movie every here’s a Marvel movie Sam hero they well done for the most her catches the bad guy bad guy emerges right catches a bad guy not the bad guy bad guy emerges battles with good guy and gets the upper hand good guy superhero gets inspiration from someone and come back and beat the bad guy the same bleeping movie every damn time I’m cheering for than but that’s every that’s every movie not just marvel I mean you can’t tell me that gladiator he dies he dies the first Deadpool was one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen you I will fight you on this I will take hang on here’s let me punch you smart alec remark punch you again smart alec remark is that not what comedy is supposed to be that’s comedy oh Deadpool is hilarious you take it back a dude I I will say this I haven’t watched I haven’t kept up with Marvel since endgame so you know all the new stuff we’ve watched a little of the stuff on like was it Loki and some of these other like series but kind of lost my interest after they closed that book I actually like I will see dead I don’t mind the series I will see Deadpool all right I’m sure Deadpool and Wolverine I might watch that I’ll tell you what I’ll use one of my uh my my digital coupons and you and I can go together there you go right there you go hey uh we are back tomorrow you’re off Zack Smith is in and got a lot of good stuff so I want to thank Jason Justin Bourne for coming on we’re gonna
