You need to always observe the situation….your hole position relative the the green/pin, the quality of your lie, all hazards in front of you etc. Use all of those factors, along with how you are playing that particular day, to decide on your strategy or shot selection. When you are playing well, you want to capitalize on as many situations as possible and go for the green/pin as quick as you can. On days you are not playing very well, you need to consider an option to not necessarily reach the green, but make sure to avoid all of the hazards and penalties and leave yourself the next easiest shot possible to avoid double bogies or worse.
