um Scott bass drift line is back with us just in time for spring and summer well look it’s no secret if you saw David pulling into the tube in El Salvador he was wearing his drify by drift line and of course I’m a loyal drify wearer as well and I was wearing mine and it’s the only uh board short that I travel with so drift line is the nepr lined board short when you look at them it just looks like a board short but there is a half a millimeter of neoprene sewn within the technical the functional the fully modernized board short so it’s anti-chafe it’s a little bit warmer and it’s a little bit cushioned it’s the biggest no-brainer these board shorts to me are are it’s the only board short I’m ever going to need um yeah I’m super 100% bought in sold in um I’m all about it I have been for uh more than a year now and they’re warm they’re comfortable they’re they they compress and um there’s no chafing you know and oh by the way I got a little pocket I stuff my my lip balm my fraking nose coat stuff and my wax it’s all in my little pocket and I’m telling you it’s the same lip balm the same nose coat stuff and the same wax as I had in in El Salvador and it’s the same stuff that I had last year when I was on a trip in Mexico or wherever I was it just stays there you know what I’m saying like summertime Essentials yeah so yeah driftline is driftline doco and we have a promo code the promo code is spit and I believe it’s 15% off so go and check that out and then that is also a great time to remind people about waterways waterways travel.com they are your One-Stop surf travel concierge since we got back from El Salvador I have had no less than three people including listeners of this very show reach out and say they booked an El Salvador trip through waterways yeah that’s cool that’s funny um I get a I’m getting a lot of calls about punto mango from from friends and just people you know via Instagram dming us and um hell hell to the yes what’s not to love you know well it’s really going to blow up I mean look Salvador’s probably already blown up exponentially in recent years but they’re building that road they’re investing in infrastructure and there’s just so many points that don’t you know uh Headlands and opportunities for surf around every bend that are yet to be fully explored and certainly not accessible unless you have a 4×4 or boat and so as they build that road and um Things become more accessible I think you know the growth potential is endless for them yeah and there’s a bunch of fun little waves around there you know when I first went there and I want to say like 2004 2002 or something there was obviously nothing there um we Str rolled up onto Los Flores um and um at the time it didn’t even have a name we were calling it Puna which is the chair chair point because we were doing these laybacks like we were like laying back in a lounge chair so we called it Puna and we took a boat up to Mango and um and that’s really all we thought we okay there’s two waves you know there’s this wave and there’s that wave and as you and I know you surf a killer wave in between those two points when there’s plenty of swell and a super low tide and then um of course I surfed another wave just a short Stones Throw from punto mango which was super fun ledgy left and a right and there’s tons of other waves when it’s bigger even further I guess would be nor day North yeah um so lots of opportunity there and I think there’s a lot of untapped swell surf spots frankly what you need is a ski to kind of go explore it all or Bo well and the other difference between then and now is just how much safer it is you know so I think there’s a lot people are going to be traveling to El Salvador for decades to come and finding tons of new waves but get in on it now and waterways will not only get you there but they’ll provide all of the advice and access and Insider info uh that we benefited from on our trip so waterways travel.com as we see some movement at the takeoff Zone it’s Kelly sler grabbing R yeah guy yeah guy David yeah fraking guy welcome it’s spit it’s a a podcast where we discuss all things surfing and a lot of stuff Beyond surfing things that may or may not interest David and and um you know like we speak in the third person and stuff like that David welcome to the show it’s April 30th it’s Tuesday the last day of April um good day to you dear citizen great to be here for an afternoon show we uh talked about YouTube people if you want to watch our conversation go and subscribe on YouTube to watch but I said I was going to give away a traction pad a cork traction pad from Timber surfco this week for whoever left the best comment on YouTube last week did I win it you did not you were in there I saw you comment I’ll get to that comment in a minute because people do want to know about that I think this one is undeniable we can always count on our listeners to keep us straight but you and I you had asked me um about the Jack Robinson and John John Florence final at Margaret River and you were like look let’s compare John John’s big score the 10 from the Heap of before with Jack’s 9.1 you know he did this big air David what do you think how does that compare to JN John’s 10 and we detailed that discussion well somebody left a comment and said I reckon if listener oh no wait that’s the wrong comment quote Jack wave didn’t deserve a 9.1 it deserved an 8.1 because that’s what it got LOL his 9.1 was on a different wave entirely not the wave that he did the air on you’re kid I find that hard to believe no Jud the judg has got it wrong in my opinion I went back and reviewed it and the the commenter which is at Erica cus by the way that’s weird her last name is C just like you used to call um Flor yeah punas Erica Seas 6260 is that commenters name Erica you just won yourself a traction pad I’ll try to get a hold of you via YouTube but I went back and check and verified yes indeed his air to then two long swooping cutbacks on soft shoulder was the 8-1 the 91 was a huge wrapping turn on a wave that was doubly as big he came out of that big first opening wrap and then went into a big close out slam so it was a bigger wave more Compact and two really kind of critical Maneuvers yeah negotiating that last section is tough yeah that’s interesting to me though a big I mean I I wouldn’t say it was a big air but it was a legitimate air with a lot of um you know like Make It or Break It like make or break the ride if you don’t complete and um so because I just watched it fresh I can State the difference was it was a much smaller wave so yes it was a make or break moment but it wasn’t a make or break wave he did what he did kind of throw caution of the Wind on a wave that was no big deal if he would have fallen on because it was never going to be a bigger score anyways so he happened to land the straight air but that was eight eight points for the straight air alone because those next two turns really weren’t worth scoring and again the other two high-scoring waves in the Heat or the two from John and the one from Jack were just you know exciting waves to see yeah so all right well Eric good work wa this by the way I’m laughing because this is not the first time that this kind of shows you like the depth to which we’re really engaged with the WSL that’s that’s kind of what it shows um but like I said listeners do hold us accountable because they will correct us on all things I mean surf history board design all of it over the course of 11 years now uh we couldn’t do it without the listeners in fact look as is always the case um I I’m going to jump ahead in the show and give you my musty moment presented by trees wax and this is it Neil Young and Crazy Horse on tour if you have the opportunity he’s on tour he just started in San Diego last week and I went to the show it was insane was super good so if any of you have the opportunity to go see Neil Young and Crazy Horse I think it’s the love Earth Tour go see it and this oh by the way I think Neil’s playing at the Ohana Fest up here in Dana Point this September with Pearl Jam and Eddie vet so you’re G to get Neil Young you’re also going to get Pearl Jam then you’re G to get Eddie veteran friends which is you know it’s going to be insane right so there’s Kelly sler Kelly Slater always shows up gets on stage with him and and maybe Neil like or for sure like Micah Nelson or or one of Willie Nelson’s other kids I don’t know but yeah look that’s going to be a great show and Neil Young’s goingon to be there so go check that out it was awesome and I I bring it up because um a listener of ours wrote me a little text a DM that I’m going to read to you Scott longtime listener and subscriber thank you very much and first time caller you were talking about being a big YouTube guitar guy and so am I and here is the crossover did you know that Dirk zff reportedly has over 300 Vintage 1958 1959 1960 Les Paul sunburst that’s easily over 100 million Justin Sunburst alone I’m sure he has plenty of other vage guitars too so um anyway he basically went on to say hey love your show keep going on oh and he went and saw Neil Young on the same night that I was there wow and there’s some insane Neil Young videos online right now from those shows so anyway um that’s from uh our longtime listener Ryan so thank you Ryan for the uh inspiration and I’m going to be watching are you a Gibson guy I’m actually not um you can see I’ve got a Telly there and I’ve got this really cool this is what they call a barncaster have I showed you this before no so it’s a barncaster it’s basically reclaimed wood and it’s a Japanese uh Telly neack and there’s this guy named Fred Fred at the I think it’s Fred’s vintage guitars or San Diego vintage or no San Diego guitar shop he’s basically like the go-to guy that like if Crosby like if Neil Young’s guitar breaks and they their guitar TCH like I need help they go see Fred Fred’s like the guy in San Diego he’s been the guy for 30 years Fred built this guitar wow and it’s got these really insane custom or not custom but rare pickups and uh so anyway that’s what I’m playing yeah gotcha wow okay um well what song should we close out Today’s Show then with Neil Young in mind probably Cortez the Killer okay or powder finger no we’ve done powder finger like eight years ago I remember yeah well you must not listen to my podcast because I often do the same L Zeppelin song over and over and over because it’s right there in front of me I just grab it and put it on the end well I like to curate the selections with a little more discernment you know job a great job slothful well Cortez the Killer now fits the criteria that I set out in general I don’t always apply but it applies today which is it has to have some you know relation to the show topics yeah okay well done done yeah so that that made it easy on me but the other thing is so it might just be the theme of the it might be the theme of the song relates to one of the show topics it might be a specific lyric in the show that you have to think about that might relate to what you and I were talking about right but I also try to not incorporate I try to dismiss major hits so it’s like it can’t be you know Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl or whatever like it has to be a little bit deeper cut than that I love that yeah and so that’s often the the criteria well my favorite one of all time is when you played Dave Mason when we had the fight on the air and you played Dave Mason that was a perfect what’s that that’s such a good song We Just Disagree yeah we just [Music] disagree but you do a really good job I don’t think people realize what a good job you do with all your production but with specifically with that part of it you know I’m one of those guys that I listen for I listen because I want to hear the song yeah all stuff is just fluff in the beginning yeah thank you that’s nice well uh we had one other YouTube comment that definitely listeners want to hear about it said uh quote I reckon if listeners were able to ask one question they wanted answered on the show it would be how many surfboards does Scott bass own and sure enough Scott delivered an answer in reply what is your answer well I I actually thought about it so I I I kind of mentally went through here I I I thought about oh I just realized I forgot that board behind me so it’s the answer is 57 I had written 56 but I think the answers 57 surfboards and one on order from Chris Christensen who called me today and said hey I’m shaping your board I’m going to send you a picture and I said Okay cool so 57 plus one on the way so that seems low to me it could be I did a pretty good um you know toggling in my brain here thinking about my boards what would be really cool is if I could just bring my computer computer out to the out to my shed which is right there and we could just go through them it’d be pretty fun to see what’s back there there’s got to be people I know guys who keep spreadsheets on their wine collection you know because they want to track what’s aging and not lose track of everything and there’s a lot of money tied up in it no no I’m I’m I’m dorm room floor you know what I mean if you if you looked around my wife calls my my fashion dorm room floor like I’m kind of like a teen teer you know like their [ __ ] just thrown around like this is cleaned up this like it used to be messy you know what I’m saying like look at it so what about though don’t you have off-site storage I do I have actually two off-site storages and few boards here so yeah so did you account for the offside storage in that 57 oh you did okay I did okay yeah wow I’m shocked that you can remember the reason why I think that number seems low is you know based on years of conversation but also I don’t think you’d be able to remember 57 like I feel like well you’re you remembered 57 but there’s like got to be ones you forgot that you didn’t remember if you can recall 57 there’s got to be a number that you can’t recall well like I said I went through it mentally like I have four in my living room there’s one here there’s one two three four in my garage there’s another there’s one right there there’s there’s like 15 over there and then then my two storage units this is inaccurate I’m It’s Kind ofing right now but it’s accurate as it’s gonna get unless okay unless you expect me to go spreadsheet on you I’m doubling I’m saying you have4 is my guess well I actually forgot about I do have a board stashed in Mexico and I have two or three boards stashed on the NorthShore which I’ll Never See probably yeah they’re in the they’re in like the garage at KI beach bungalows and I haven’t been to Northshore in 15 years or something like that so I’m sure they’re gone which is fine all right well this is the exact answer I think people wanted more than the actual hard number at the end he’s just hearing you try to process it oh no um well we got a bunch of surf news coming out of the WSL I got Slater conversations coming up out the ying-yang I’m not sure what the phrase is or how that phrase even happened to be but Kelly remains to be at the top of our news stories regardless of where he’s at in his career the guy makes news every week so where where should we begin as it should be well um I’ve got some chopu stuff and um just kind of some local non story stuff about the Oceanside Pier so and then there’s the Challenger Series so why don’t you start us off it sounds like Slater is the lead okay we’ll use the Challenger Series to get to Slater the Snapper event is on in the round of it’s like 16 now six in one of the 16 rounds that they run I think we’re halfway through the event takes about two weeks to get through but at any rate the surfing’s you know fantastic snapper such a rippable wave that you can almost turn that event on at any time and kind of enjoy the surfing um one of the big stars who’s having a breakout year that I mentioned last year George patar strikes again and takes out the aforementioned Kelly Slater Kelly Slater coming off of his quote non-retirement two weeks ago is right back into an event before the next CT event in fact which is Tahiti in about two weeks he showed up at the Challenger Series I thought that he was just going to surf the world champion heat um no he was actually in the event itself he lost in the opening round against George patar but uh interesting did you watch his surfing I didn’t watch the Heat I I look I actually watched some of this event I did not select his heat to replay but I saw him in the in the championship whatever they called that thing the Legends heat or whatever yeah and I thought he looked incredible I thought he looked so smooth I wish he would surf like that more it’s almost like he gets too ampy when he puts a jersey on which by the way you know anyone who’s put on a jersey knows that feeling where you’re going too fast for what you should be you know attempting but you tell me I thought he just looked buttery smooth in the Legends heat the way his hips were swiveling through the turns that was my in my his hips look fine his hips look insane him him um bowing out of Portugal due to a niggling hip injury I think is uh he’s got that injury all lubricated yes niggling niggling is that a word it is I like niggling and his hip looks lubricated at this point and in fine fashion um so yeah that first of all the world Champs Heat Is Awesome awesome it’s a great concept Mick Fanning could absolutely still be on tour with the surfing that he is doing like for a guy who’s had two or three years off you would think that he would get you know he’d spend some time on the sofa and let put on some weight he looks as sharp as a tack so mix looking insane Steph Gilmore looked insane Joel Parco was just bruising on a twin fin I think but Kelly looked in fine form interestingly he wrote a different board in his actual competitive heat he wrote a twin fin that was like short and wide that’s what he was on in the in the CT heat he was on a twin fin wasn’t he oh was he as well yeah okay yeah because they were saying I wonder if he’s gonna ride this twin fin in his real heat gotcha so you know it’s interesting how judging works and we could probably do a much deeper dive we’ve probably touched on this plenty over the years though is just writing a somehow the judges don’t score at the same it’s misinterpreted the surfing that he was doing was misinterpreted by the judges there was one wave in particular he needed a score and I think he got a six he needed a bigger score they ended up giving him a six I rewatched that wave in slow-mo a couple of times he just comboed the crap out of it and it was like these roundhouse turns that were just so complete and the banking off the whitewash and it’s like I don’t know I feel like he got majorly underscored like had he been riding a Thruster would he then get a nine-point ride on that wave it just it the board looks a little bit more novelty and so maybe you don’t take it as seriously I’m not sure I think Kelly might have got underscored yeah there’s I mean I think that it’s more than anything it’s that I don’t even know what we call it anymore but it’s when you underscore Felipe because you’ve seen Felipe ripped so hard for so long and you underscore you know what do we call that there’s some sort of syndrome where you’re just kind of over it you’ve seen him we’ve seen Kelly for so long that his great surfing is just ah you know yeah it’s just Kelly being Kelly and so it’s unfortunate it’s partially that the other detail is the fact that it’s a twin fin specifically because when you watch George patar and he’s there in all three Surfers in that heat riding thrusters there’s a spark and like kind of an exclamation point that comes on the turn that looks a certain way that is what you’re expecting to see Kelly’s turns were just linking everything up and there’s never the exclamation point on it but you know an argument very much could be made it was far superior surfing and it was you know harder to do yeah it just doesn’t have that Zing at the end of the turn and but I’m like I guess maybe they just can’t compare apples and oranges I I’m not you that’s a great take the exclamation point that I think a center fin surf action shows off is as something but but on the other great point you make is that Kelly’s linking everything together so buttery that you know who’s to say which is better you know and if we’re talking like what what do they call it speed flow and power and flow yeah I mean I don’t know and maybe it’s because we’re of an older demographic but I see that kind kind of Surfing I see the kind of Surfing Machado does I see the kind of Surfing that um like Dave rosovich does I see that flowy surfing and I go that’s it that’s it you know yeah and maybe there’s not an exclamation point because you don’t need an exclamation point when your sentence goes forever which ours tend to um so I interviewed I told you I was going to interview Shane heran yes I saw that so I did and you know this this exact thing that we’re trying to talk about with the limitation of the judging has been going on forever and um well probably no greater example than ke than Shane heran yeah I would I because I lived through it and there was for sure an anti- laser zap bias so what was your perspective on it what were they judging highly and what was the laser zap doing that they couldn’t account for well first of all let me say let me pull back a little bit and say look I wasn’t on the beach watching it I was just a a Grom absorbing it through the magazines like all of us were and occasionally a surf movie would roll through town and you’d go to the laloma and watch it and see it and stuff and of course there was the US the um op Pro in Huntington and you saw lots of footage from that but my feeling was he did he did win at some point doing a backside 360 was kind of the famous move right yeah exactly and but it there was a lot to unpack here and I’m not sure I’m the perfect guy to unpack it but Shane was going up not against a just another board design he was going up against Mark Richards and the twin fin which the entire rest of the field had adopted nobody adopted what Shane was writing everyone else went to the twin Fin and I mean everybody else and it was that you know three-year period between twin fins and single fins when there was no triin there was no Thruster and so it was Shane against the world you know and and we’re talking about different types of Surfing you know um I think Shane was way more out in the flats way down carving way down deep in the flats of the wave bottom turns and straight up and I think the twin fin was just maybe more mid-face more kind of in the pocket hookie um kind of snapping off that inside Fin and Shane was just bang bang and you know I’m not sure so got the he got I would suggest you that he probably got the raw the of the the stick a few times in the judging situation yeah so the way that I’m kind of piecing everything together from my you know I was really young when that was happening um if I was even I was actually not born for half of it and then I was barely born the other half of it but piecing it all together the way it seems to me is like he came from skateboarding like he was one of the first like skated before surfing and um so his surfing was heavily influenced by the skating the other thing was he is a massive lower body like he had to have board shorts cut so that they would fit around his thighs so he has this really muscly wide stance but it’s skate influenced so the surfing that he was conceiving of doing there were not boards designed really to do it so he partners with Jeff McCoy you know and they kind of redesign the shortboard for his style of Surfing but even if other people got on those surfboards they wouldn’t necessarily work the same way as they would for him because of his you know physicality and where he was coming from from skating so that’s probably why it didn’t have huge mainstream kind of translation a lot more guys look like Mark Richards you know and have the reference points that Mark was coming from but some of the design elements that he and McCoy developed are now kind of in every shortboard because they were doing an extreme version of it that only really applied to him or very few people but there are elements of that design that apply on the broader scale so it seems to be that is part of what you’re kind of getting at the other part though is kind of what we’re talking about with this Snapper event and Kelly which is just if it’s so outside of the convention judges do not know how to apply in order to create an objective judging criteria you have to Define things that are your expectations for what you want to see but if somebody does something that is so radical the judging criteria can’t account for it you know what I mean like just by the nature of creating an objective criteria you cannot account for certain things and so it could be argued that a lot of what Shane’s surfing was was outside of those bounds of what they were judging and then of course the board looks so freakishly different that it’s like the lines it’s taking doesn’t hit the boxes for the judging criteria yeah it was just a strange time too I mean there there’s a you know obviously judging has gotten much more professional now um back then there was a lot of stuff going on and well he he touches on that too specifically lightning bolts influence in the judging booth and the Surfers in the lineup so that’s interesting yeah yeah he call can’t wait to listen Straight Out who who does he call out everybody I mean he names the five judges in the booth and their exact affiliation with the brand from ownership to sales and Mark Richards being on that team and them having a vested interest in you know a big sales Spike by Mark winning yeah well there’s something to that but not to take away from Mark Richards it was a great rivalry it was really sort of I’m not going to say it was the first great rivalry because I know there was others especially in in the Australian world but um from an international standpoint this was a time when especially here in California surfing had gone from being kind of dark locals only black wet suits white boards stupid stupid long gun and crappy waves to um Mr and the whole Pro scene kind of emerging and and there was color and there were shorter boards and there was ripping and it was an exciting time and um it’d be a good it’d be a good documentary I don’t know where that story arc would lead us but um Shane would be at the center of it yeah yeah really interesting guy well as it relates to Kelly um I mean we could do more on the Snapper event but I will point out to you something that you may not be aware of but there’s a change.org position uh petition to get Kelly Slater into the Olympics no way that’s so cool take me to it right now I want to sign it okay uh change.org slow- kelly- Slater D2 DF in the 24 Olympics I may just have to send you the link I just no I just Googled change.org and Kelly Slater and it came right up okay perfect I’m going to read to you from Seven signatures yeah but you know who are the illustrious seven Tom Carroll and myself are two of them I’m in I’m in count me in so Tom Carroll I’ll read Tom Carroll’s comment but basically uh James Whitaker listener of ours in New Zealand James Whitaker put this together gives a little introduction and then he says Kelly Slater is the greatest competitive Surfer of all time you can find a brief bio about him at the Olympics website the vast majority of surfers and surfing fans would love to see Kelly Slater surfing at chopu this year in the Olympic Games this includes other competitors they’d either love to compete against him because doing so in Tahiti is likely to be a highlight of their competitive career or if they don’t want to surf against Kelly it’s probably because they know he could beat them Kelly hasn’t qualified via standard processes but it might not be too late for the international Olympics committee to adjust entry criteria to accom odate him so may uh some may feel this wouldn’t be fair to others but on the flip side if the Olympics exist in order to showcase the best talents in any given Arena I feel allowing Slater to surf in this year’s games would allow the committee to show that they know how to achieve their goal please sign if you agree CH uh cheers James Whitaker that’s so cool I just signed it I’m super stoked it’s it’s really cool that um Tom Caroll chimed in that’s important I see here that you’ve chimed in that’s great so Tom says specifically Kelly Slater’s addition to the Paris Olympic Games will offer invaluable authenticity and drama to the surfing at this extremely te technical wave of chopu Tahiti a venue that could easily see him medling the vision of the historic Olympic gold medal finally ending up around Kelly’s neck would draw unprecedented worldwide attention to the growing division absolutely and um I’m reading yours here David went on to say um in fact including Kelly and any group of Surfers in any conditions at chopu and Kelly would be a safe bet to win the event draw the biggest crowd and provide the most entertainment very few if any 5 52y old athletes could pose a legitimate threat for gold but the Kelly’s story is unrivaled and I agree and I you know I’ve spoken with guys on my border and podcast about this I it’s kind of one of my questions dour you know should Kelly be in the in the Olympics and of course everyone’s like yeah I haven’t heard I is there anyone that thinks that he shouldn’t be I mean help me out here I don’t think so I mean look the only argument that could be made that I’ve probably made even is like whatever they the ioc sets as the criteria you should stick to the criteria right and so I don’t like the idea of making amendments to the rules but the reality is the criteria is very flawed like there’s a very specific limitation to the criteria it’s you know you’re you’re qualifying Surfers whove never even surfed chobu to be perfectly honest so Kelly Slater as I stated in my comment there is the most qualified Surfer on the planet to surf the 2024 Olympics at chobu Full Stop yeah you know what I mean like the amount of time that he spent out there the amount of wins he has out there the amount of um uh competitive prowess and experience is completely unrivaled like you couldn’t make an argument for any Surfer to be more qualified to surf in the Olympics and I mean who knows I don’t know all other sports but it’d be hard to find another athlete that’s more qualified to surf in their sport or to compete in their sport than Kelly is to surf in the Tahiti Olympics so yes let him surf totally agree it’d be like if they had the Olympics at Augusta Georgia where the Masters is held and they weren’t going to let Tiger Woods do it Tiger Woods won it like three years ago he was the winner at age 49 or whatever like so anyway yeah look we beat this thing but I don’t think I think Now’s the Time to kind of drum this drum to beat this drum so to speak and yes let’s get Kelly in the Olympics it’s it’s it’s such a no-brainer that’s what it’s frustrating and I don’t care about qualification none of that matters the ioc can make any rule they want everyone knows that they’ve been doing that for years well again their their kind of criteria that they designed for entry into the Olympics is they had to come up with some sort of criteria right but if not surfing Chu as part of that or if that’s not part of the criteria to have to serve Chu then it’s kind of a flawed criteria so what do we really well here’s the deal you know like the powers that be at the ioc and at NBC are like let’s have having like coffee with Fernando and they’re like how come you didn’t get Kelly into this event like yeah this you were charged for you were charged with one thing to make this thing insane and by the way Fernando’s doing a great job I’m not here to to shoot Fernando in the back or anything like that because he that guy’s deserves all the credit in the world for the Olympics but it seems like they could have you know they saw this comeing and they could have written a rule done something you know what they didn’t so we’re we’ve got a petition change.org Google Kelly Slater and change.org sign the petition good I like it um the other story that relates to all of this is that the WSL announced Snappers back on tour on the CT tour for 2025 they also announced the wild cards which include Felipe Toledo and Joel chanka Stephanie Gilmore and Lakey Peterson on the women’s side and Joel chanka is is actually back competing at snapper right now and he’s surfing incredibly well so it’s great to have him back yeah I watched a heat with it wasn’t it wasn’t that heat but it was a heat with four Brazilians and holy mackerel it was Samuel poopo it was Ian Goa remember I sent you the link I sent you a video Ian Goa who’s wasn’t he on tour like 20 years ago or was that his dad or something his dad was on tour but Ian was on tour as well for I thought he was yeah that that guy surf’s incredible but how fun is like you said earlier in the show Snapper is just so much fun to watch I know when it’s even when it’s three feet because it’s you can just see the next section running up to you and it’s just you can mind surf the crap out of that wave but yeah so look the surfing’s insane I’m stoked for the wild cards good for Ley and Steph and and um Mr Chan what’s his name Luca chanka Jo Jo yeah sorry Joan So what um you sent me that clip of Vian Gua doing the backside air that he got a 9.1 for what were your thoughts on that erir were you sending it out of like I can’t believe this got a nine or were you sending it because you were blown away how good it was yeah the second I was just blown i w i remember watching it and it was like you said I was watching Snapper with the sound off doing work and I and it caught my eye and whoa what was that and I and then they did the replay and then the super slowmo and the super slow-mo really got my attention where I was like holy Ma so but I’m not an air guy I’m not I’m not Chris cotay I can’t break down the intricacies of an air but so you tell me what what did you think was was that deserved of me sending it to you kind of going look at this man this is pretty incredible yeah I thought so I it’s not the gnarliest a I’ve ever seen like it it’s a full Road you know 360 double grab full but it was a double grab but it was a variation on a grab that you know we don’t see very often so I’m not Chris Cote either and I don’t know what type of a grab that was but it was it was you know you got to get your body super do know Todd Richards know we need to get Chris and Todd on this yeah for sure or I mean they’re gonna call it out on their podcast I’m sure they do the Monday Mass on Mondays so you could find out there too but yeah I mean it’s it’s an insane it was a it was a sick there for sure um would you be able to post that on on here somehow yeah yeah yeah I could post it with today’s show notes so um the other little I mentioned I got a Kelly Slater heavy show uh the other thing that I saw recently was on stabing yeah because I want to tell you that before we leave the Challenger Series at Snapper yeah Excuse me while I burp the waves are going to be insane it’s going to be 5 to8 feet on Friday there which will be Thursday afternoon here in North America it’s gonna be pumping Snapper for the finals okay that’s in contest wend yeah it is okay good the last day is the 4th of May Friday is the 3 of May but again that’ll be Thursday afternoon here in North America should be really good finals are shaping up too like you mentioned Sammy poopo Sam is surfing incredible he’s on one side of the draw Joel is on the other side of the draw George patar is still in this thing so could be a phenomenal final yeah I was looking at it you know who i’ who I secretly want to see win this thing who our our buddy Hirohito is it Hirohito onara hero heroo Ohara Roto that kid rips and I secretly want him to win so that he drops another memorable po Heat win interview maybe I just do you remember his at the US Open yeah he did something fun right he was super yeah he was gonna buy a car or something or exactly they interviewed him Peter King had the video clip that went viral but they inter they asked him what are you gonna do you just want $100,000 what are you gonna do and he played all koi for a second first of all his English is not great or wasn’t great at the time time so it made it the fact that he had timing with his comedy made it so much funnier because he uh he had the confidence despite the vocabulary but he played all coin he’s like oh I don’t know you know maybe buy some cars and so it was just it was amazing wow that’s who I’m pulling for and you’re right I’m looking at it you know so there’s 16 guys left I mean if you’re on the Challenger Series you’re trying to qualify for the CT there’s only like four events right I mean there yep yep there’s these two there’s I think is there any are there any in Hawaii I don’t think so no that’s crazy um there’s the US Open there’s a couple I mean it’s kind of like if you’re not in the 16 in this in this round right now after this event you’re kind of going holy mackel I got to go to Naran who knows what the ways will be like there and I don’t know so look they’ve got the Gold Coast they’ve got the um uh Sydney Surf Pro I think they do it at Manley they’ve got the bedo event and then the US Open four events I mean it talk about if people complaining about the cut this is the gnarliest series ever to try to make the CT you got four events if you’re not in the top 16 in the first event you really have got your work cut out for you I was hoping Alan Cleveland Jr would find his way into this and it’s kind of bums me out because the waves have been two to three feet it’s been super fun Snapper totally rippable but if you look at this every one of these guys is like a buck 30 you know what I mean like there might be one maybe Josh Burke is the head no well joal shanka I don’t know how much he weighs he’s probably a buck 60 these are all lightweights and it’s unfortunate for the heavier footed Surfer that that they’ve got to do this then they got to go to Manley bito could be bombing and solid and good and you know yeah but it you know yep I guess my question is of these guys who do you want to see on the CT of these 16 that are left you know and I’m sure say George patar no I mean look he’s we see guys come out and have like a banner performance sometimes with like a breakout year but I don’t know that he’s got staying power you know so I wouldn’t necessarily put my money on him he’s been exciting to watch Sammy poopo I’d love to see back on tour but if you’re making me pick a new guy um Jacob Willcox alleo mun we’ve already seen on tour Oscar Barry don’t really care George patar Michael Rodriguez we’ve already seen heroo Hara I mean to be honest tooto Josh Burke or heroo maybe yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing Josh I’d like to see Josh Burke too yeah anyway so all right well we’ll see what happens um Kelly Slater I was talking about the other little story with him that I saw pop up was he’s being coached by Glenn hall Hall this year yes micro Hall yeah micro started with him in Australia so Bell’s and Margaret where Kelly got 17th obviously you got last in this event so the coaching may not be working out but um I guess I think he’s going with him to Tahiti as well what are your initial thoughts on Glenn as the coach of Kelly well I read the article by stab about this and my takeaway is that it’s a positive thing because what Kelly needs more than and I think all athletes need is they need somebody to be truthful with them and Kelly was basically asking Glenn to kind of take a look at the boards that he’s writing and give him some insight on how the boards look relative to maybe how the judges are throwing scores down and and I just think that there’s probably a lot of yes men around Kelly you know that are like oh yeah Bor looks insane you’re killing it you know whereas Glenn’s probably like you know what no you know like and I guess because they play golf together and there there’s some deeper level of understanding and commitment and friendship and Trust in this guy telling me the truth that I think it’s going to work out now obviously the performance lately suggests what’s he doing coaching you it’s not working but it’s not really about that it’s more about somebody that’s going to be truthful with me somebody that’s GNA call me out if things don’t look good and I think that’s where Glenn Hall comes in Glenn Hall also has R waa Molly picklum Tyler Wright and Lakey Peterson can you effectively add another person to the roster well I don’t think see with Kelly I don’t think it’s a whole lot of coaching I think it’s more like he and Kelly uh he and Glenn have a little debrief you know and they there’s not much you’re going to tell Kelly it’s not going to be about technique it’s going to be about here’s what I’m thinking you know another inch or an extra fin or you know it’s G to be this is what I’m seeing Kelly this is what I’m seeing I don’t know you might not be seeing that but that’s what I’m seeing I mean what my my thought question to you is yeah you’re not going to tell Kelly much about technique who are you to tell him about boards either you know what I mean like he’s asking that’s the thing is he’s asking he’s he’s asking for somebody to give him some honest feedback about how the boards feel relative to the way the judges are throwing scores down you know and yeah sometimes you you know you can’t get that even when you’re in the water on the boards you need some a fresh pair of eyes to give you the honest truth about it I liked seeing that this was happening because I liked the idea that Kelly is you know still um evolving and asking for help yeah um and it made me think too that you know I think one of Kelly’s I mean who can say what his greatest asset is because there’s a lot of them but I think one of his hidden assets maybe is this ability to be in a teachable state and I think that part of what’s great about surfing is that we have these Elders who were just in we instinctively honor you know they came before us we are so reverent of what they’ve done that it’s like if we’re around them we’ll just listen like keep talking we’ll just listen and I think Kelly has had access to so many of those people in his life and this actually came up with Shane heran as well because Shane has coached Kelly unofficially for years you know just intermittently and he said that um he was working with Kelly prior to the last event Kelly won in Tahiti which might have been like 2009 it’s been a while now but you know he’s like we spent he goes you know we were surfing together and like I would coach him in that way but like he goes I specifically remember like spending 90 minutes in the car talking before we went surfing one day and he’s like my whole ambition as the coach was to manifest in him the belief the self-belief and so I wasn’t giving him a mantra to say or anything like that it was just a matter of like through conversation making him know that he can do it because he’s done it before he’s still got the talent he can do it again you know for 10 more years if he want if he really so he just needs to have the vision certainly the confidence but beyond that like visualize you on the stage with that trophy you know and so Shane was talking about kind of embedding that stuff into him and it made me realize like Kelly keeps those people in his life everywhere that he goes you know or just people who are full Kelly Believers in what he’s doing and I think that that is it can go wrong in the way that you’re talking about where it’s like nobody’s going to tell them no nobody’s going to tell them the truth but I think that that’s that’s one layer of people probably a really dense layer but beyond that there’s a thin layer of people who have known him for 30 years who are specifically there for those reasons you know to hold him accountable for those types of things and give him the confidence and allow him to achieve his goals in those ways yeah look we’re all here for Kelly in the Olympics and um Kelly at Manley is Kelly gonna surf at Manley that’s that’s sad I I I feel sad I would bring him a donut and you know a thing a decaf and just go dude you know what let’s just go play Atari or something you don’t want to surf in this heat when do you think the last time Kelly Slater a donut was that’s my point like I would just be like it’s over bro here’s a donut let’s go play some video games I’m sure that he’s had like a version of a doughnut made out of chia seeds that you like compact together somehow but a properly deep fried dut I’m gonna guess 20 years I agree what he eats now is dhin nuts you know they’re not Donuts they’re DH nuts they’re like an Indian like you said like a flax seed chia seed kind of like pad like like basically it’s kelp and seeds kind of in and then they punch a hole in it exactly is his life better or worse by not having that doughnut for 20 years by the way I mean I’ve been eating donuts for a long time it’s gray but it’s there and you haven’t gotten 11 World titles by doing it oh that’s true I’m just saying I’m just saying the occasional Indulgence I’m not saying he needs to live on Donuts saying in 20 years if you had one occasionally as a celebration would your life be any worse I don’t know here’s the thing about donuts for me right is there is there a single food item that you eat and immediately go Oh I shouldn’t have done that like that’s what a donut is to me I mean not a whole dut just one bite of a dut yeah and I’m immediately like oh my God like I’m never doing that again like I’m I’m anti- Donut for just for the record dogs fall into that category for me as well oh my God yeah any of that crap I just can’t do it yeah yeah I don’t disagree with it rocket.com surf just this week my wife figured out she was paying a subscription for Showtime but then also paying musty moment of um presented by trewax check out these nice images and videos of too many mustsee moments you already said I’m just trying to take care of our bros man our bro over there Ryan at trewax what about Christian I mean Christian I’m sorry Christian Ryan’s the guy who sent me the IG the Instagram about Neil Young uh Christian at treesx look Tim McKenna’s Instagram there’s videos images of the new judging Tower at chopu and this is what Tim said he said thanks to the pressure of the local population nature conservation associations and the all the people around the world who signed the save chopu petition the Tower project was reduced to the bare minimum in order to have the least impact possible on the environment the area where the tower is built has very little Coral it’s a flat Shelf with small spreadout Coral heads and a few bigger ones or bigger rocks which are already covered with coral and over the years corals have covered the previous concrete Tower base structure as you can see in his videos and again I’m quoting Tim here um and he goes on to say some other stuff but before we get to that uh any thoughts on what you’ve heard from me so far no but I appreciate Tim and Kenna giving us the update from you know on site on this thing and also uh thoroughly kind of I I thought his caption was really helpful too it’s it can be damaging sometimes just to put images up and then let the comments go nuts so it’s good of him to well then I’ll information because Tim goes on to say the new tower was never only for the Olympic Games it’s a collapsable Tower David it will be assembled every year for the duration of the event the aluminum structure designed and built exclusively in Tahiti can finally be certified for insurance and safety reasons it’s an investment the tahan government has made for the next 20 years of Surfing events at chopu now Tim goes on to say look I’m neither Pro nor anti- Tower but if people want to have professional surfing at Chu in the future a judging Tower is needed to properly assess the tube riding performances I personally don’t make a living shooting contest and prefer shooting free surfs however I’m pretty sure a large majority of the locals welcome the exposure and business of the WSL events and the Olympic games surf events are also a great way to spark the passion within the new generation of tahan surfers I.E Vini Fier and are an opportunity for these young Surfers to shine and to try to make a living out of their passion so no need for all this Olympic bashing this is the best thing that Tim said now here this part chopu will protect itself chopu is the birthplace of Mana if chopu does not want the Olympic Games we will have flat surf with heavy rain and Maru wins for the entire event if chopu does not want the tower a double XXL swell will come and take it down if chopu wants the Olympics it will put on The Greatest Show on Earth which I end quote from Tim mcken you know I want to believe all that’s true I I like it as well you know there’s a spiritual element to all of this that will supersede anything that you and I are trying to do now if you go on to Tim’s insta and I hope you do and check it out you’ll see of course that there are some naysayers there are some haters no maybe haters isn’t the right word but there are some people that are still hyper protective of what’s happened there and are against all of this stuff and um you know what they’re allowed to have their opinion as well but um I’m of the my opinion is of course far removed from all of this that uh that Tower looks pretty cool and um I’m glad that it can come down and won’t be an eyesore yeah completely um thanks Tim mcken again for doing the work and actually getting imagery too because that was the other hiccup for me just along the way throughout all of it was just like what does any of this look like it’s hard to en Envision and without understanding what it look what it looks like it’s also hard to Envision the environmental impact so it’s really helpful first thoughts when you first saw it not that impactful yeah I saw it and I was like that thing looks minor exactly that’s how I felt but then I’m also you know I’m not an environmentalist so I’m like I don’t know maybe the work done to just put that stuff in did create some Havoc you know I just don’t know so even though I thought doesn’t look as serious as maybe our imagination let us to believe that it would be um maybe environmentalists would know more than I yeah well look more is going to be revealed um the WSL version of the chopo event starts May 22nd and so um I’m kind of already geeking out on the swell predictions for that it’s way too early of course but we shall see what happens okay I know by the way chrisa Moore has been given a wild card into that oh I didn’t even see that yeah Chris moris got a wild card into that which which is great because she’ll be in the Olympics she’s the defending gold medalist perfect cuz remember last week I was asking you I’m like do they even pract are they even going to get any like competitive chops going any any practice before they head into their Olympic uh competition and looks like she’s gonna yeah so let me ask you this on the women’s side of the draw who wins Chu um and I think okay that’s a good but because I want to say I think um uh what’s the um the pipeline girls name Wong um Moana Jones Wong I think Moana Jones Wong got a got got in there too through which country no no not for the Olympics for the WSL oh the one coming up on on May 22nd gotcha she got a wild card into it I think so now I could be probably blowing it I know Carissa is in but I want to say I so if I can pull it up look I I’m not convinced how much her pipe experience translates to chopu they’re obviously the um you know uh courage that it takes to paddle into a wave like that but they are two very very different waves and so I think experience at chopo trumps all in this scenario so somebody like vahini somebody like Caroline Marx who spent a bunch of time out there practicing I think um I and I don’t know how much time Moana has actually spent out there so she’s not in sorry oh she’s not it’s Carissa and vahini Fier or the water cards vahini I could see winning this thing yeah I mean if if the waves are I mean imagine like a proper chopu swell and them running the women like because that’s something I don’t remember seeing you know and I think Vini in that scenario just cleans the I almost feel like they have to do that like I wonder if there’s pressure on them to do that and I think that if there is that that that’s proper applied pressure I think they should run the women in solid pumping chopu like the best you know four hours of the event in the early rounds like let’s just go let’s go plus because there’s a cut we got way less W Surfers in general and I think they’d be doing a service to the women if they just said okay here we go like agreed this is it it’s on yeah let’s see it and I think that there are a number of the athletes who would absolutely step up to the plate and throw themselves over um Caitlyn simmers for sure Molly picklum for sure Carissa Moore for sure um airine marks aine marks what about Tatiana I think Tate would for sure go for it I do too yeah so let’s do it yeah radical that would be cool I hope they do that I hope that happens I pulled up my phone while you’re were talking to look up the definition of niggling yeah Petty bothersome or persistent especially in a petty or tiresome way cool word man niggling I said Kelly Slater’s niggling hip injury so it’s official and then it’s a petty injury it’s a petty injury exactly um I also when I pulled it up Michael duny had just posted a clip at Snapper of some longboarder burning him and Michael grabs his leash and pulls it and knocks the guy down pretty solid clip I don’t know if you could see it or not I can I can see it yeah so um it is pure pandemonium out there at Snapper dude like that hurts when you grab a leash like that it hurts your fingers so you’ve done this before well H Lance Burkhart um but I can’t every day I pull up Instagram and see free serve clips from Snapper there’s another one that’s more egregious than the day before Eli hanaman doing a massive full you know front side air into a guy who’s dropping in on him Joel chanka getting burned by a guy and like landing on top of him in a bodyboard stance Michael dunfey pulling gu his leg ropes it’s wild out there I couldn’t imagine paddling out because I was looking at it this morning like a day break and it just yeah I couldn’t imagine paddling out at snapper when it’s two to three feet and there’s a million frothing 20-year-old sea level Pros trying to get a photo I know it’s so gnarly get so well my I got a must SE moment do you have anything else that you want to address before then um the only other thing is that you know the Oceanside Pier caught on fire this week oh my gosh yeah and I’m sure you heard about it it was kind of big news here and um you know that’s kind of it Oceanside Pier caught on fire they put out the fire and everything everything’s going to be okay was it a restaurant there was a restaurant out there and there still haven’t really quite determined exactly how the fire started but uh what time of day was it 3 pm on Thursday and there was just a massive plume of smoke up there in Oceanside kind of coming down the coast of San Diego so it was kind of a big deal Choppers and lots of lots of uh fireboats putting out the fire and uh it was quite a quite a scene yeah it looked crazy I’m glad that they got got it under control before taking down the whole Pier W were firing that day yeah well good he didn’t even get that oh was that a joke yeah the Wes are firing too soon dude too soon I’m not ready I’m still in morning all right um my musty moment presented by trewax is Guess Who Kelly Slater once again the stoked bloke Barton Lynch whose podcast I’ve referenced a couple of times here on our show uh did a 2hour deep dive just Barton and Kelly sitting at the table and uh they have a long history together and it is excellent listening I bet I bet you get two really honest and thoughtful intelligent humans talking I bet it’s really good it’s probably must listen it is you can watch it on YouTube so we can call it mustsee as well presented by trewax the only petroleum free surf wax trees wa.com um so you remember a couple of weeks ago I was talking about the Surfline interview with Kelly and I said you know it’s nice to see Kelly candid and you’re like no I make an argument that Kelly’s always been candid I think you’re right and this was more of it like Kelly was emotional in it and unpacking things like how his father’s alcoholism affected him you know and how his mom would sit up at night looking out the window at every car that passed to see if Dad was coming home um stuff that was just you know deep like gnarly like as if he he and Barton who have been friends for decades are having this conversation in private but he’s doing it publicly so I thought it was an incredible interview yeah that’s that’s you know we got 11 World Championships we’ve got a lot that he’s done and I think that just his his humility his ability to be open with us is the greatest attribute it’s and that’s saying a lot because of all this other stuff well it is and the hips man because of the hips and his recall is incredible like him telling stories and he references the name of his Elementary School teacher you know in the story and the name of you know all the individual Surfers who influenced him and Shapers in the local area and and then just Heats along the way and scores from those Heats it’s like he is sharp as a attack um and then that was If he if he ever meets you he he will remember it you know what I mean like he’ll you know like he it’s incredible well I loved hearing a lot of those names I don’t know you know but some of them you do and just hearing the stories like of Todd Holland for example and him just like really doubling down on like dude Todd Holland has some moments in Surf history that just deserve to be shine a light on he’s like his heroic stuff where the guy’s from Florida yeah but I’d see him he’s like I’d see him at the nor on the NorthShore and he was like he’s surfing wame when nobody else would and then getting sucked over the falls like paddling up into a wave like getting to his feet and just getting blown back the back off the back a little bit jumping off his board and then getting sucked over the falls at that point um you know charging off the wall when it was double over head and nobody else was out there and there was no photographers it was just him charging off the wall into Closeouts by himself like Kelly’s giving these stories and so these are great documentary options right here I would love to see the you know the Todd Holland little mini documentary you know with Kelly CH you know giving some insights wouldn’t that be cool totally but then how long has it been since you even thought of Todd Holland’s name you know what I mean so to have Kelly bring that stuff up and then there’s nobody who is there for more of it than those guys so they’re the perfect people to tell the stories anyways it’s just a lot packed into a two-hour conversation with those two guys it’s so funny there’s so many interesting things that could be done in a documentary fashion so many stories I should say not things but we also have this real incestuous thing where like would they ever really talk about it like Conan uh Conan Hayes is a great example like you know like there’s a lot going on there you know with it a lot you know like his father and a lot of crazy stuff going on like that would be kind of interesting you know but would we get the guys that we need to get to actually tell the stories and I’m not sure we would because everyone’s g h you know what good is it going to do me well I’ll tell you what leaves plenty of room for you and I’s podcasters to have these conversations in a conv convivial way that uh they feel comfortable sharing them in you know what I mean because they might not on a HBO documentary yeah well that’s a great Point really good point so uh I mean one of them in particular was Barton ly I mean it was when they were talking about Kelly’s um experience with his father’s alcoholism and Barton Lynch was talking about in Japan a situation where he got into a bar fight completely drunk and just got absolutely beaten to a pole unconscious by an American military man you know they were just at a bar and somehow Barton picked a fight with him I guess is what he said and the guy just beat him unconscious and his face was talked about seeing Kelly the next day on the beach and uh his face was just swollen shut you know and so Barton it was a one of the pivotal experiences that Barton confronted that you know gave uh led to him kind of getting away from booze as well that’s amazing you know and and Kelly’s not like obviously not an alcohol Drinker you know um but what’s funny is that I was thinking about this earlier in the show we were talking about chop pu we’re talking about Kelly for some reason and what came to my mind was he’s the only guy at chopu that after he won he he chugged a beer on the wave somebody handed him a beer and that’s like so not Kelly that was the during that letting go heat where he he beat Bruce irons he was he was comboed he had to get two t and he got two tens and then somebody handed him a beer and he drank a beer which is like like I say it’s out of character but I think it shows how radical that moment was by the way is Bruce irons I saw something on Brian beelman’s Instagram about Bruce Bruce irons making a comeback did you see this yeah I think brw uh beelman’s being really optimistic and generous Bruce posted did an Instagram video at a rehab facility in Mexico where he was getting some plant uh treatment plant medicine treatment oh and and so beelman’s probably using that um testimonial to say that Bruce is making a comeback but I would say it’s a premature claim right we got to wait and see Bruce does not look to be at the top of his uh game in that testimonial video but he seems to be uh excited about the potential for coming back and feeling healthy again moving into the solution that’s good yes it seems to be um the one one final thing I’ll say about Kelly Slater that he revealed in that interview was about his competitive mindset and he said that in the last 10 years he has not looked forward to traveling to contests he said quote I rarely want it anymore um and he said that the Olympics was one thing that was like a little bit of a revitalization of like that competitive desire and lust but he said over 10 years ago when Parco won his world title and Parco said yeah you know I’m gonna probably do it for one more year and then just kind of hang it up and retire that Kelly was so jealous of paro’s mindset then he’s like oh my God that sounds amazing to me but he just could not give it up you know and so in the subsequent years he’s quote rarely wanted it anymore and I think that is been the um his contest results have reflected that mindset for him that’s really fascinating I I think there’s something there like because Parco was able to kind of take the surfer cloak like I am a professional Surfer this is who I am and just go nope I’m actually Parco the bloke that wants to watch footy and drink beers with the Bros and he’s able to do that and I think Kelly for so long has had this cloak of I’m the professional Surfer to take that cloak off and put it to the side and go now I’m a dad mowing my lawn and taking my kid to drop off you know for kindergarten that’s a big shift you know and that’s going to be truly Kelly Slater’s Letting Go moment not his moment at CH but when he can put that aside and yeah um and embrace that next chapter with complete abandon with the same Stoke that he had when he was doing black black and white and be becoming a professional Surfer I think that the acknowledgement that that desire is not there anymore is the first step towards that and he he also talked about he’s lived so disciplined for so long that he almost hates it he feels like he’s going crazy at times you know um and then the a final final thing that he said that I thought was very uh insightful was that you have to have have humility to keep progressing for sure and so any moment where he has stepped out of line and it was something that his mom beat into him which was like if you think you’re too good like I will smack you up side of the head you know and so taking all of your opponents seriously no matter how little known they are all of that the humility is required to progress is what it was so and and I think that’s a LIF less um just just in everyday like when when we wake up you know like am I capable of learning from the downtrodden homeless person am I you know can I learn from them yeah am I willing to learn from them you know yeah and and if the answer is yes then you’re probably going to be open-minded and willing and learn yeah it’s so good position to be in Daily you never know when those lessons are going to come and who they’re going to come from the hard but it’s a good one yeah well thank you the stoked bloke Barton Lynch is putting out bangers weekly uh in concert with Peter King you can find it on YouTube or anywhere else I’m sure so cool well look David great show um 5:30 I was going to make it to yoga but I’m not going to sorry dude um that’s okay you know what we had a great Late Show I tell you what until next time David adios and loha [Music]

  1. Guys, I'm a fan of Kelly's but there's no "fair" way to sneak him in the back door to the Olympics.

Just consider people like Sally who actually WON the gold medal at the Puerto Rico ISA's and still didn't get her ticket in.

Or how about Erin who won the Silver the year before and still didn't get in while every surfer who did qualify for the Olympics via the El Salvador ISA's actually finished below her in that competition.

And then add in the many others (especially on day 5 as I recall) who were forced by the ISA to paddle around in literal slop in Puerto Rico while losing their dream of qualifying for the Olympics, not to other better surfers in many cases, but to crap conditions.

Did "someone" have to win? Yes, of course, but if that's going to be the standard we apply then the winners and losers might as well be determined using Rock, Paper, Scissors.

As for the ISA having a flawed qualification process that's an understatement. It's a system focused more on "global inclusion" than actually determining which surfers are best qualified to be in the Olympics. And I get it. You don't want all 48 Olympic surfers to be from only Hawaii, Cali, Brazil and Australia so something has to give but the current design, where you can win gold or silver and still not get in just isn't it. Change the petition to for the IOC to include Kelly, AND Sally, AND Erin and then I'll consider signing it. Until then, sorry Kelly.

  2. DJ David Lee Scales, the thoughtful selections are appreciated. You should moonlight as a DJ and spin records at a wine bar or something.

  3. WSL really need to get their judges evened out and not so preferancial… really bad situation with judges… Cheyenne rips and Kelly was robbed as well… Cheyenne as well… I remember it at the time…
