Sheffer Rory maroy the dominant stories coming in overshadowing Jordan speed’s bid to complete the career Grand Slam this is Jordan’s eighth try since winning the open at burkdale in 2017 just one top 10 third at Beth Page black but never really contending he was six back of Brooks kka in all 11 previous starts PGA Championship reasonable chance in 2015 but Jason they was just too good that year spe won the first two Majors then finished a shot out of the playoff at St Andrews second at Whistling in what is one of the greatest major seasons ever Jordan how’s this won 11 of his first 121 starts but just two of his last 150 and though he has struggled in recent years think how dramatically he could change his historical standing with one great week do you like that talk of the career Grand Slam only a handful of players have ever done it does does that motivate you or do you get tired of hearing that that you just need this one uh neither um I mean I’m aware um it’s very cool but I would take any and all and as many Majors as possible regardless of where they come um it’s just a kind of a cool cool thing if you’re able to hold all four um you know there’s just not many people in the game that have done that and you have an opportunity to do things that are very unique in the game of golf um you know that’s what kind of stands stands out you know stands the test of time afterwards so um yeah I mean anytime we come to these weeks the idea is to have prep to try to Peak for you know really four times a year and um this is one of them after what happened at Augusta um can you kind of assess what what you did from there and what you’re trying to do to get to this point and play well here and then keep going forward yeah I had two bad holes um and uh they were costly mistakes and otherwise I think I could have could have made a run um I stand by what I’ve kind of said a little bit this year like I feel like you know my mechanics are more sound than they’ve been in a long time um I feel like you know I’m driving the ball better maybe than I’ve ever driven the golf ball um I feel like I’m playing better than my results and that’s a really frustrating it’s a different kind of frustration it’s not kind of the same as when you’re searching for stuff and um as I’m not very good at being patient but that’s kind of what I have to be um and then something will click and and I feel like I’m close to to going going off and doing some really really cool things but um you know it’s just kind of been a couple shots here or there where I’m either playing the wrong shot or I I took out too much club or not enough club and and it’s it’s just really costly mistakes at wrong times at some tournaments that you know maybe should only affect a couple shots but end up bringing me down a little bit because I’m I then try and force it because I haven’t had the results I wanted and um I think that’s been my biggest mistake is you know last week on Friday I’m I I’m I’m in fourth or fifth place on the 17th hole and I hit you know a really good shot and caught a kind of a a wind dying down wind flip I had the same ball speed as a guys as Colin in front of me who hit it 30 feet past the hole and mine goes 30 feet short of the hole into the water I make double and um and then bogey the last after our DeLay So I go three over there when I was looking to go par par and it should just be three shots but then I come out trying to force it Saturday and make it all up and and have a bad day so it’s it’s kind of been that this weird um little bit of lack of patience but my game feels actually really good it’s it’s it’s just kind of a fun funny timing right now that um I thought the weekend I thought Sunday’s round was was really good and I could I could build off that um coming into to this week and I think any week it wouldn’t surprise me if I found my way into contention any week right now promising start to 2024 for Jordan spe but then DQ at Riviera Miss cuts at the players and Masters he is down to 24th in the world Branda what’s the impact of Jordan’s dip in form on the game as a whole you know there’s been a lot of talk about you know maybe a a little bit of fatigue from the audience at watching uh the PGA Tour this year although the interest was way up last week and it was way up at the MX so that’s two instances this year where one you had a great story um and one you had a great star I mean people still love stories and stars but when you look at more generally at what’s going on maybe it’s not the fatigue of all the debate and divisiveness in the game maybe it’s just the fact that you look at the most popular players right Jordan spe I mean he absolutely moved the needle tiger did Rory did Phil did Jordan spe moved the needle his game has decayed he’s won two of his last 150 tournaments so he’s been playing poorly uh Ricky Fowler’s game has fallen off Justin Thomas’s game has fallen off col Mora Cowell even though there’s a little bit of a Resurgence he played well at the MS played last week but generally over the course of the year his game has fallen off Victor havin he L to me like a budding Jordan Speed 2013 2017 his game has fallen off you know if you bought back in the day if you bought a ticket to Wicket and Kristen chenowith and Adina Manzel who played Belinda and alphaba if you got the notice that they weren’t there whoever they replace them with no doubt would be talented but your interest level would go way down so you’re looking at some of the most popular players on the PGA tour a lot of the most popular players on the PGA tour that people love to watch for varying reasons whose games have all fallen off which the reason why we could get into debate about over and over but nonetheless their games have fallen off so as much as people want to blame the lack of interest in in some tournaments this year compared to year over year I would say it’s just the fact that look that the purses are up they’re asking the sponsors to play 20 $25 million but some of the biggest stars in the game haven’t stepped up uh they haven’t been focused maybe they’ve been distracted they haven’t been focused so it’s like get your eye back on the ball get focused get back after it do what you’re meant to do play golf great and entertain the world agreed PA how’s Jordan Speed fit for this golf course I mean that’s a great big pitcher perspective there from uh from brandle and one I hadn’t thought of absolutely right on that yeah look Jordan is Miles off his game you know he talks in his press conferences about being close but the stats don’t show that he’s he’s putting nowhere near the standard he used to put uh his driving is is average uh maybe a bit better than average but his arm play is very very poor and we all know as Brandon illustrates so many times the importance of approach play is a key indicator in terms of playing well so uh can of see him being a factor around this golf course not really not with the quality of players that are around the competition uh that’s there at the moment you know you’ve got uh we talked about kka last night and how good he looks and particularly coming in with a chip in the shoulder a lot of form uh obviously maoy coming off two wins and the same with Sheffer absolutely on fire so I don’t see Jordan being a factor of course will be a great storyline should that happen but it doesn’t look like he’s going to be uh in the runners and Racers when it comes to the the last night on Sunday three Majors brandle that can’t be it for Jordan or could it no I’m still bullish on him I I think at some point he’s you know he’s still young uh you know he said he’s driving the ball well I saw the ball speed get up to 182 miles hour last week for Jordan Speed which was which was crazy and he did hit some phenomenal drives but the the power of His game everybody thinks was the ungodly putts that he made but really it was his ball striking at one point he was 12th in Strokes gain off of the T and second in Strokes gain approach uh his ball striking was off the charts and we know how well he chips and he was putting the putter together that’s four mindblowing talents that he had that he’s lost I’ll just make a point BR you know following on from what you said there about those guys you know and Nicholas often talked about it about life getting in the way you know they’ve all become dads over the last four or five years um they become more family men obviously they’re making a huge amount of money even though they’re not having success they’re probably making more than when they were winning these tournaments you know I mean you talk about reasons I mean is there a common denominator there that you know life has got in the way for these guys they’re in that period of their life from that kind of 27 to 35 year age when you know family comes along kids come along you get distracted because of that and then you throw in obviously the distractions that the game is having I mean you think that’s a factor I think it could be for sure I do you know Jack had famously great balance but he also famously had the greatest wife in the history of wives and Barbara uh yeah paternal pangs are a real part of of the game I mean the sacrifices of a professional golfer look they live great lives nobody’s needs to play a violin for them but you’re gone a lot and you miss out on things a lot and the temptation to be there uh is real I certainly felt it had a lot to do with with me leaving the tour I mean no doubt about it but when you have gifts that these gentlemen have I mean these are preter natural gifts that these guys have they’ve they’ve earned those gifts they’ve sharpened those gifts they’ve done a lot with those gifts I mean they’re put on this Earth to play golf at the highest level and you always talk about you can only compete uh or the the goal is to compete in the allotted time I love it when you when you go there well the allotted time that window it’s small padrick Harrington talks about this for most people mere let’s say most golfers you know it’s 25 to 34 I mean for most it’s a blink of an eye you feel like you’ve got forever when you’re out there playing but it’s it’s a blink of an eye and it’s over your best golf you know your best chance when you’re physiologically at your best you’re cognitively at your best uh and you have the least distractions it’s over and so I I feel like I understand them being distracted yeah but they’re taking their eye off the ball yeah I mean I mean I I I really believe that I I I think you know intensity and focus is not quite the same when there’s so many distractions going on in your life and one of them is uh is is having a family Jordan’s off at 8:37 a.m. eastern time on Thursday 10th Hall with the defending champ Brooks Kea and Max H who’s been better at the major championships of late
