uh when they talked about the head coach thing he you know somebody asked him about Keef and he said I don’t want to say that the players stopped listening but the message stops hitting home we know that but that was three years ago the message stopped hitting home exactly like we know that almost for certain No it started to work it started to work they scored more playoff style goals it was working series well this is the thing consecutive game where they didn’t score more than three goals did no I know they it started to work no no no no the one where they scored two or the other one where they scored one or the other one where they scored two when whene there was one where they scored three the one when I started watching that Amazon or after I watched that Amazon Amazon documentary I started watching the Leafs through a bit of a different lens and I started going okay beyond the fact that they won 4-1 tonight which is great how did they win like how did they do it how did they get those four goals like there were games where the Leafs won the Leafs lost for I’m like wow I don’t know this one hit an ass this one I don’t know goalie probably should have saved it this one hit the linesman you know stuff like that but I started to watch I’m like okay is that goal going in in the playoffs all right dude rips it down the wing and he comes in and he Snipes it top ched not the leavs glove side that that happens but not the Leafs it decreases in the playoff big time like even like we were just talking about paner mhm what do you think about paner what do you think like highend skill being able to kick yourself in the forehead for some reason Vision Vis great Sally yeah Vision um you know being able to make plays um that’s a tipin like it’s a high-end nice looking tipin but like that’s a tipin that’s how you have to bloody score well what about on the power play that’s something that the Leafs could do cuz they’re given a million opportunities and they have an inability to do that that’s something that is like a skill and coaching issue and they need to solve that perimeter perimeter perimeter on stop because it’s a low percentage shot no one’s there for the rebound clear try to gain the Zone fail try to gain the Zone fail try to gain the Zone fail line change try to gain the Zone fail try to gain the Zone get it perimeter perimeter perimeter soft shot on stopped cleared penalty is over how many power plays did we see that way you know what I mean and they’re not like uh the Bruins will just send enormous bodies in front because it’s hilarious like they they sent Patrick maroon out they sent uh Justin brazzo out I know this is long spilled milk but 203 when the Bruins uh tied the game uh against the Leafs game seven go look who’s in front who’s at the point is it zidan oara who has maybe the hardest shot in NHL history no he’s the netf front guy because it’s hilarious and effective you take away the goalie’s ability to goalie he can’t see [ __ ] M you know the the leaf started for a while there to do a really good job of taking away the uh opposing goalie’s eyes and again auson they just stopped doing that yeah I think this is why this is why it was more than enough time to move on from Sheldon Keefe and as mlsc does it’s a little too late but he never figured out how to get the players he was given to score in the playoffs and especially on the power play and the players that are there don’t know how to score in the playoffs and and you know what neither could Babs right yeah and and so you know I’ll give Babs credit they did score more goals when Babs was coaching in the playoffs they just let in a pile of bad ones too uh I also don’t think I I I think and we can get into the minutia of this but I think of things like the Leafs six defenseman is Travis dermit and he does a spin a ramman overtime and it leads to a goal when the leafes come out like a house on fire and and have 15 shots on net and the one shot the Habs get goes in it might have been their best period of the series and they lost and and it’s stuff like that where that’s where I I say part of this wasted this is a wasted we’ve wasted time here a lot of time um one thing I’ll say about Brad is that he did bring in veteran presents and didn’t allow guys like gordano and Brody who were clearly not up to it to play in this series much more than Brody’s one game and and you know the Edmonson effect was Edmonson great no was he solid yes I liked him as an option I did too and I think that’s I I like that at least the team’s going that way now um uh the last thing um Trill even kind of answers his last question by saying short answer we have to look at everything we’ve got good players but it hasn’t worked duh now uh all that to say You’re going to hear a lot of people say well they didn’t take accountability or they didn’t do this or they didn’t do that or I don’t know any more than I did before yes you do first off you know you know sami’s as good as gone they’re going to find any if Sammy is back as a as the Leaf’s golender next year something’s gone really wrong and he was their last option I mean we’ve seen it happen before I’ll be stunned I’d be stunned um but again I was stunned when the Leafs actively went after Matt Murray uh as their goal tender and augmented that with Peter moric what was the plan there there wasn’t one Steve that’s the plan uh that was a that was a bad day in Montreal when we found out that was happening uh because that’s when it was when we were we were in Montreal for the draft when that happened we were we were I remember when that and and good uh I don’t remember fre has gone on the Jeff Merck show by the way over the course of this recording and said that he believes that um um uh he believes that uh brube will be the head coach of the Toronto Maple ECE by the end of the weekend which the weekend it’s Friday by the end of the weekend all right uh Kipper was saying I think earlier that they’ve made contact with with buub Bay camp which would did you listen to hear him say this or did you see a tweet it’s on it’s on Twitter it’s out there so um I’m thrilled that Todd mullen’s name is not in there um because that’s a Babcock guy and I’m not interested we’ve been we’ve done that been there done that he’s a Babcock disciple no story not into it can I say a terrible reality what lots of coaches or Babcock uh disciples dude Jim Montgomery I know uh contacted him before game seven and none of us wagged our finger oh I I didn’t listen I’m not saying you’re wrong but I also think it’s it’s you’ve been down that road find somebody else are you telling me there’s only 40 guys is that what you’re telling me well it’s funny the Leafs they find themselves in this Loop where they look at themselves and they go wait a sec where are the leavs we have to get someone with tenure we have to get the best available because we can afford the best available and we demand the best available mhm and you know that that’s why I was so shocked 10 years ago now when they got Kyle DUIs cuz I was like this is the sort of guy they would never get M and they’re going to develop him and it’s going to go really well and I was right on some they didn’t do that with Sheldon either Sheldon is the first time NHL head coach you know what you’re right yeah they they didn’t have that philosophy the last two hires so why not try it this time well now I wonder if ever going to do that again yeah I think they proved that we tried it both of those guys were here for a long time they didn’t win we also didn’t give them the freedom to do whatever they wanted because the head honcho up top Brendon shanan made most of the decisions but the first year head coach thing promoting the guy from literally the Toronto Marley’s the AHL to the head coaching job didn’t work yes like he didn’t get them over the home also uh the Leafs had a lot less to lose back then MH there’s a lot more on the line now you don’t do a rookie head coach when you’re in this part of the development you’re at risk the next five years are Matthews supposed to be Matthew’s best supposed to be neander best if if you miss on this and I cuz I I I name those two because I think they’re the ones that are going to be around leading this team uh you miss on those are you you get a bad coach now you’re in I mean you are maligned forever we don’t want to think about it this way but the reality is Austin Matthews will not play hockey forever there’s going to come a day when Austin Matthews isn’t a Toronto Maple Lea anymore and if you don’t capitalize on having one of the greatest goals scorers of his generation on your team like you’re going to miss out on a huge opportunity and it’s going to be unforgivable for the franchise and who knows where the franchise going to be at 5 years from now if they don’t win something and everybody moves on like are we going to go back to a rebuild dude that that gave me heart palpitations Maddie just went sry dude but you you look at you look at a situation where the San Jose Sharks are right now you look at the situation where the Chicago Blackhawks are right now when you have the Chicago blackox I shouldn’t even use the example because they won but yeah at least they won the Shan Jose Sharks are I think the the best example there of a team that was very competitive for years and years and years they make a final they’re in the Eastern their Western Conference finals every year they’re always in it and then they just fall short and then now look they’re competing for their first overall pick they get it finally but you after years of competitiveness comes years of drought and with the Leafs you need to get one Within your window because eventually it’s going to come the other side where we’re back in the the sunken Place nope nope what if I live in ignorance until that day arrives the Pittsburgh Penguins they got theirs and now they’re on the outside looking in like if we want to throw in the teams that won the Blackhawks are great example too you know they win now they’re in the sunken place but nope yeah and then and then what Conor Bard and then Conor Bard they’re going to get one of the Russian kids the difference is the NHL wants Chicago to do well they’re trying to rebuild this franchise it’s Toronto they’re going to be successful whether the Leafs are good or not we’ve already seen that you know like we we saw 15 years of the Leafs being bad do you think at any point Gary bman picked up the phone of the Maple Leafs or the pension plan when they own that team and said guys guys hello hello if you guys are good imagine how much money you could make imagine not being terrible and and by the way that’s the that’s the reason Shanahan’s still here is the money they’ve made in the last 12 years he’s got a great uh he’s got a great Ally in Gary bman because here’s what’ll happen if if the Leafs move on from Shanahan here’s what’s gonna happen the Keith P will call Gary bman and go who do you think that’s what they did when they were looking for a general manager all right everyone thank you for coming today um we’ll open the floor to questions I’d like to welcome uh the new president of the Toronto Maple George Paris do not be surprised oh God finally get some calls yeah I oh yeah you think it works that way finally get some calls do not be surprised with the Leafs hire Greg Campbell too if the date if the uh if if Shanny is not successful in this next year in making this team much better um do not be surprised to see him back in an NHL head office role almost immediately I don’t I don’t know no no don’t be surprised I’m telling tell you oh fine I’m telling you like as a as like is this advice you’re giving me or like a a command I am commanding you to not be surprised you’re not allowed I will come to your house I will knock on your door and be like are you surprised you’re my friend I want my patience is running thin with this organization and I hope so like I I it I hope the fans also feel that cuz it’s been a long time and like I said it’s you’re not going to be a position where you have these Collective individuals who haven’t been able to get it done but you clearly have something there in terms of the regular season success and if they don’t find a way to get it done it’s like what do we do here here’s here’s what I don’t want fans who watch the Leafs out of habit like I keep coming back to that video of that guy uh and his name is every dad in the greater Toronto area and like classic dad build too bald goatee pickle fingers real drives a truck pickle fingers yeah proba probably drives the truck yeah probably barbecues the [ __ ] out of anything you put in front of Saturday smoker day with the thing you’re talking about the The Flipper with the you stick on it 100% you walk into the backyard and he greets you with Here Comes Trouble yeah and he he says uh oh yeah let’s go out there and have fun like when he’s watching Shelton ke’s think dude I have uncles like that they watch them and they’re like like oh yeah there it is there it oh yeah there you go God like I never want to be that but also they hurt so much less right they don’t expect anything they’re given nothing and they’re not disappointed whereas I live and die for this stupid team and uh it’s a lot more dying than living at least uh when it comes to the spring for

When they fired Dubas that was time they should have also fired Keefe. Team needs a hard nosed, no nonsense coach who will push these soft divas to success
Why did they not park Ryan Reaves in front of the net on the PP just once?
Shanahan was the much bigger problem
He’s a scapegoat for the whole organisation
It a question of motivating. He didn’t lead the team. Tavares is not a leader, Trevelong is not and the msle forget about it.
Too much credit and blame is given to the coach. These are professional players making millions per year. Why do you have to motivate them? Also, hockey is not a game of strategy with set plays like in Football and Basketball. You move the puck, pass to your forward or wingers, stick handle and shoot. That’s basically it. The game is basically determined on the bounce of the puck. You shoot, the goalie stops it, it bounces to your player who scores. It bounces to their defence men and your drive is over.
When players can no longer be coached, they need to leave. No coach will be able to change that. It's all about attitude.
Simple he was causing the BEEF to rot. to beat Boston key players made the differnce and when goalies are hot you bench them sad sucker.
I always enjoy listening to you guys and have never said so. Don’t always agree but do respect your opinions and genuinely enjoy your show.
PP was a disaster. Team D was awful.
Leafs = Sharks, two perennial playoff chokers
Steve, imagine it is 1993, and your "Toronto Dad" is watching that game, you know the game, the one with LA. He is just as passionate as you are, just as hopeful. Now imagine it is 30 years later! Think about the fatigue, it isn't that "Toronto Dad" doesn't hurt any less than you do, it is that his scars are thicker, deeper, and have been there a lot longer. Speaking as a "Leafs Dad", trust me, I know the feeling.
There's hiring the best coach available, then there's hiring the right coach. The Leafs don't understand this distinction.
Keefe is not he one who gave those crazy overpaid contract to seasonal players like Marner, Matthews and Nylander who are disappearing in the playoff. Firing the coaches have always been the easy solution for the GM to look good.
You’re still doing this bit ?! Is this a repeat ?
Oh well….guess you guys got to drag it out and make a living.
Real question is : how many more weeks after the firing and the end of season press conference can you keep doing this show ?
I figure 2 – 3.
If the Leafs don't get something done in the next 5 years the way that was talked about with the ups and downs of a hockey team (the cyclical stretches of good years and then the down years) they run the risk of becoming the same as the Sabres.
Should have fired the MLH
Devils fan here. I’ll take Keefe. Great win percentage and can make the playoffs.
The cope with Steve is hilarious
Hey I drive a truck and didn't like your comment
The aggression that the Leafs are missing is not body checking.
The aggression the Leafs are missing is puck aggression.
They don't attack for the puck.
They don't attack with the puck.
They don't attack at the puck.
They don't have offensive puck aggression.
The team needs shooting defensemen and both Matthews and Nylander need to be paired with strong power forwards to be effective.
Because he was the scapegoat for Shanahan!
Fire Shanahan and try as best you can to get Marner and Tavares and possibly Rielly to waive and build a realistic NHL team like we all have been saying since Shanahan got here!
He had a winning record Jessi. Cut him sum slack he was a great coach and a winning coach at that.
The Leafs need a coach that's won The Stanley Cup. Not a coach that's won the calder cup or the memorial cup or been to the conference final… They need a guy that's won it all.
Berube is my second choice. Jon Cooper is my first choice if he does indeed resign from TB this summer.
90 to 95% of what we complained about Keefe was due to the TML players not willing to buy in and be a net front presence!
Not enough sandpaper in the corners on both offense and defense .
Rielly has become un playable in our own end, trade him or make him a forward!
Tavares is the worst captain in the NHL stealing an 11M salary while refusing to waive and performing worse then 3M Domi!
Marner was a COMPLETE no show in playoffs!
Unless the players hate Keefe zero reason to fire him
Leaf Nation will buy the merch no matter who is in charge of the team or where they are in the standings. I'm not insulting Leaf Nation, I'm saying they are the most loyal fan base in the NHL. A lot of teams have band wagon fans when things go good. Leaf Nation like my Canuck Nation are there no matter what.
I don’t think they started listening, but they changed the makeup of the team. Keefe is a good coach, but we needed a change. I wish all the best to Keefe.
They fired him so he can go coach a Playoff team.
So Shanahan could keep his own job.
Google says Bobby Hull once clocked a shot at 118MPH. This is before the engineered sticks. Is this refuted?
Keefe could only go so far and no more and never all the way
He always got out coached in the playoffs
The question is why did the Leafs move on from Lou Lamoriello who I believe would have had far greater success with the Leafs than Dubas.
Babcock was perfect to "mentor" the young guns. Both Matthews and Marner.
The real question is why does no one talk about how Matthews can get roughed up and the rest of the Leaf bench look on disinterested. That is the biggest warning sign in the Matthews era followed by Matthews demanding more ice time.
With this Core 4 and any coach 😀- come playoffs the Leafs did as well as possible without Core 4 upgrades.
Every failing business needs a scapegoat.
And Keefe is it.
Meanwhile guys at the top of the organization are STILL there.
Just like the main problems the Leafs have had for DECADES.
Babcock sussed out Marner. Babcock would not bend to Matthews demands for more ice time.
Matthews gets roughed up and the entire Leaf bench looks on with no interest.
Matthews et all stopped playing until Babcock was fired.
Another sorta "dad guy" here–what you're describing is we older folks being further along the grief stage. We're at the acceptance stage that this team cannot do "the thing." I got hardened early on and actually cried when they traded "my guy" Lanny. You did get right the fact that we really have no expectations, so aren't disappointed when they let us down. Even Charlie Brown must have got tired of the football trick by Lucy….
They didnt have to move on the coach is the easiest piece to move out.
How do you coach self priclaimed gods?
These guys were asking for
Keefe to be fired, and now their asking why did They fire keefe, or should they fire keefe. MAKE UP UR F*in mind dude
Leafs by now should have a stable defense corps and in goal. They have neither. Mostly because their forward group eats up most of the cap. Until the Leafs can start spending cap dollars on defense and in goal OR better yet brining up young talent from their organization this team is not going far in the playoffs.
Leafs should go all out and sign Dillon and DeMelo for the next 3-4 years.
Keefe did a decent enough job. But he was too soft on the team. Besides scoring, or the lack of, this team likes to wait until they're up against it before they start putting in an actual effort. If they had played the first 4 games like they did the last 3, could have been a different series.
Morgan Rielly get him gone.
The players are lazy, the management are clueless, and the ownership doesn't care as long as the seats are full and merchandise is selling.
Someone comment on this when they stop doing gambling ads please
