[Music] this is six tackles with Gus with Matthew Thompson and Gus go welcome to six tackles for another week great to have you with us not far away from Round 10i The Season’s flying by isn’t it and Magic round coming up in uh just over a week’s time plenty on today David Faida likely on the move a number of clubs join the hunt for the Queensland origin Ford so many injuries gee some clubs have been whacked haven’t they lots of great ask Gus questions and some fascinating games to have a look at for round 10 welcome Gus Matthew Thompson how you doing good thanks a bit of ha F actually how have you that sort of that time of in May why would you get it in May well the transition in Seasons it’s fall you know so lots of polling around I thought I thought hey fever was a spring thing the new blooming flowers just pops up from time to time right I notice it’s getting colder in the morning it is isn’t it little chilly I’ve stopped wearing shorts so my shorts are gone now until yeah the Sun comes back out yeah yep think about the uh all the footy players who are out there early morning or you know what when they get down there for their recovery session have to jump in the beach oh well this this is this is the part of the year now this is football season football season is an outdoor winter Sport and you know um this is the part of the Season where you find out who really wants it and who’s really um seasoned for it because it’s cold it’s wet it’s miserable um you get some Terrible Weather you got to be out there early in the morning you’re still there late at night and they’re playing in all sorts of conditions it’s Origins around the corner it’s a real testing part of the Season you’ve had a bit on haven’t you me B going on I’m always busy Matthew look I hope you don’t mind but you’re a busy man and as a trusted colleague of yours I thought I’d try and give you a hand with a few things that are going on at the moment I’ve saw some options for you for some legal repres presentation that you may need coming up have listen to these Jesus these photo copy what the that I cleared try three F3 what the that kidding me I cleared that try three time Dennis dudo any interest yeah he be it’s the vibe it’s just the vibe he he’d be a to help I’m here field G um this BL always very clever I always thought can I get a double macchiato to go please name why for the coffee wait I’m the only person in here I may be the only person in the suburb oh yeah but other people might come in so we still need a name c first name will be fine France version no mate Danish they don’t shorten CL green he’s a beauty that was a brilliant show oh the best he he played um he played Roger Rogerson in that in that movie Blue BL Mur uncanny isn’t it incredible and looks exactly like him yeah what a great actor do you know he’s one of the world’s great Shakespearean actors is he really yeah I’m I’m his number one fan really and for our fans of um American American uh well not really soaps dramas this this guy’s pretty famous One Thing if you get into trouble don’t play the case play the man what are you talking about Good lawyers worry about facts great lawyers worry about their opponents Kyle is cocky and devious figure out a way to use that against him ja SPC from Suits isn’t that the show that Harry’s wife was in Megan Michael yeah Mega Michael yeah any of those take your fancy my law is probably a combination of all three I got say probably isn’t the dentist again Jesus these cop is what the clear TR three F3 what the that you are kidding me clean that three time I I liked it at the end of that movie where he said and he he even bought a new copy even bought aop even bought a new cop how old would that movie that would be 30 years old I tell you I tell you when I first saw it uh I first saw that movie sitting in a hotel room at param waiting for the roosters to play a semifinal against the goal Coast in 1997 really yeah what 1997 so we’ gone into camp at param we’re playing at param Stadium against the go Coast Titans and go Coast Phil camonis was coaching the goal coast and they’ made a run that was the year of the split competition um with super league and um we went out and stayed at the hotel in parata I think it was I can’t remember which one anyway there’s a Park Royal at there yeah so I couldn’t sleep in the afternoon so I thought I’ll put an in-house movie on and the castle was on so I put the castle on I watched that movie before I went to that game there you go we’re going to Bonnie Dune what the the runway the Airport runway Straight Out The Back Fence oh so funny it’s a great I told you I sat on a plane with him Michael Kon Michael Kon yeah they’re they’re outstanding great rug rugby league follower I got to say um the phot copying printing situation around here at the channel 9 building is not too dis similar to dinno every time I try and print something I end up in the fetal position you shouldn’t have seen me in my office at home nothing ever works at home does it me and the photocopy are mortal memories mortal memories and I got to do thing and scan I got no idea what I’m doing and every time I stuff it up I go and buy a new one thinking it’ll be easier it’s easier than getting your your ink cartridges replaced just go buy a new printer because you got to match up the code oh yeah I cartrige with the new one I got I got a bottle I’ve actually got to pour the ink in but it lasts a lot longer I don’t know I don’t know much about that me and Technology just don’t get on there we are so if you send Dennis dudo into the NRL it’ be no drama uh round nine who impressed you uh a lot of teams impressed me actually um there was some big score lines and there were some very close games wasn’t there comebacks yeah some really close games uh um I didn’t expect I I tipped the roosters to beat Broncos I didn’t expect that score line although the Broncos ran into some injury problems but the roosters were very impressive and they get some they still had a lot of players out it’s a hell of a roster isn’t it I’m I’m still I’m starting to warn to them as the real as maybe the real deal this year maybe the back half of the season they really come good and um with their depth of talent we’re looking at a lot of other teams now that are starting to lose players and form goes out the window with it uh the roosters have got such a strong roster and so much depth um they’d be the ones you’d sort of be investing in at the moment because nothing went right for Brisbane during the game though did it no but you it’s the second time this year roosters have beaten them yeah they beat them over in v i i I had a feeling the roosters would beat them um I think the Broncos have got some work to do on their game and their mentality of the game uh just to make sure they’re qualifying for finals and giving themselves another chance at a grand final appearance um Panthers again good um but ran into fairly meager opposition what about the form reversal of Cambra yeah well that’s incredible they looked like they were going to get beat by a thousand after 10 minutes well it was 20 n and I reckon Manley had bombed a couple and we’re kind of going through man were sort of in that phase where thinking well we can score whenever we like and got a little bit flippant with it and I think Tommy dropped one stone coold dropped one and then someone else dropped one and then camra got that intercept just before half time and I’m sitting on the L and I said you know what I’ve seen this before and the second half running towards the south at brookal Lael the Raiders just stormed him over the top of them and and Manley could not get out of that malays they could not get out of that lonic position they’ve got themselves into it’s hard to win a game once let alone twice if you have to win it twice you’re generally in trouble and the Raiders momentum was just too good for them Dolphins Cowboys was an extraordinary game of football but they just keep finding away the Dolphins very very good uh the knights continued their good form and um and Bulldog had a win which was pleasing is going good guys how long’s it I wonder how long it’s been since the dogs have spent consecutive weeks in the eight or three weeks in the eight in a row been a while yeah happy with the why things are tracking uh I’m extremely happy with a lot of what’s happening at the club what are you happiest about we’ve come a long way um I’m really happy that we have the right people in the right jobs doing the right job I’m really happy with our Pathways program and how that’s going um you know there are a lot of good systems around the league but I don’t think there are any that are better MH um and even from an NRL perspective our coaching high performance and medical is first class it it it really is um there are other great systems around but I will say none better MH um now it’s our job over the next few years to develop talent and bring Talent through and and go from there and hopefully set the club up for for sustained future long term we’re not out of the woods yet by any stretch um you know we’re still uh now we’re near where we need to be but extremely happy with the culture and the environment in our club um it’s a real joy to go to work every day and the group of players that we have at the moment are a great example for the younger players coming through with that was important you know if you’re going to be a Development Club and bring people through Pathways programs you need living breathing examples of professionalism in your top grade and we have that now um so I’m not surprised that they’re that they holding their own on the field obviously we’re all subject to injuries and depth of talent and those sorts of things but we’re in a far better position now than we were a couple of years ago and U but we’re only job’s only half done only halfway through where we’re going so you obviously brought a lot of players into the club I’m I’m wondering if any of them are better than you expected no not really it was a bit of a task because um a couple years ago in sort of 20 and 21 Bulldogs ran last they won three games in each year was probably the worst period in the club’s history and they hadn’t played in the the final since 2016 so it was a a fairly extensive job but we actually turned the roster over in two years uh all coach all high performance and the playing roster was turned over in two years now I don’t think anyone would dare to attempt that or be able to do that in today’s environment but that was what I want to do we did it um to get us now to a starting point and what it is now is a starting point um to build our club into the future and so I’m extremely happy with how that’s gone uh there was a fair bit of pain involved with that and there were some really dark moments last year but you know the club’s now going through only half the injury situation that we faced last year we were vulnerable last year and then we had a terrible injury run just made it worse and worse and it was awful going on it’s a terrible place to be in a losing football club for people and that’s you know that was my responsibility um during that period to keep to keep everything together because um um it was my decision that we go through that um it’s hard to walk into a club into a board of directors you know where your clubs run last two years in a row and said we got to go backwards to go forward there’s not too much going backwards from running last in the comp so um but we managed to find a way um and yeah I don’t like talking about the Bulldogs publicly much no I know you don’t I just thought it was worth worthwhile asking and the thing that what from a um you know commentator outsider’s point of view there’s a real character about the way the team is playing which I’m sure gives I know the fans are hopeful you can continue on and maybe challenge for a final spot this year well what they’re doing is they’re competing every week yeah um if you saw the way they trained during the offseason and the way they’re preparing each and every week as I said coaching high performance and medical wise our board of directors now is extremely strong and they’ve done a wonderful job Management in the club the whole club is a completely different environment to what it was um when I first arrived and remembering too that that was at the back end of Co so there would been a lot of difficulties for all clubs um but it’s in a really good place at the moment really happy with it and um corporately they’re doing very very well commercially they’re doing well and everything improves when there’s a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel and the players that we brought in have been doing an outstanding job I’m not surprised by any of them um and the role that they’re doing they’re all bought with us specific purpose in mind with a specific character and personality about them and um I’m I’m as I said to these players that we’ve brought in as it was a number of years ago when we did similar things it’s um I’m indebted to those sorts of people for for the rest of their careers and the rest of their life you know it’s just um players took a gamble with their careers to come to the Bulldogs at this time and um that’s something I’ll never forget very nice very good things looking up for caner this year yes no no no no no no that’s no no dear dear no one knows better than you that some players are just unlucky to never get a a taste of origin football there’s been some great players that have deserved to and never have the way Dylan Edwards is playing he’s getting better every week my question to you is Gus is Dylan Edwards a genuine option on the wing for New South Wales no no no no no let me let me preface that by saying he could do it he could do the job he made his debut in first grade on the wing um play test football the played test football on the wing probably just to get him in the team but I think that would be grossly unfair on Dylan Edwards um for his first Venture into origin if they decide that he needs to be in the origin side then he needs to be the fullback that’s and that would be fair um then as he makes himself accustomed to origin football and uh if there was a need to move him uh he could he could certainly play on the wing he’d be a great number 14 he can play Anywhere when he first came to us from dor he came from Doro I believe Doro yeah yeah when he first came down he came down as a 5’8 I mean he can play half or 5’8 he could play hooker play play dummy har he could play Anywhere um Dylan so when I’m saying no I’m not saying he could wouldn’t do it he could what I’m saying to be unfair to do it now he wouldn’t want me to say that because he just like a blue jersey wouldn’t care what number was on his back uh he’d do the job he would do the job on the wing no risk but I think it’s unfair I think if he’s going to be judged judg to a full back and and go from there obviously there are some very good ones around um and it’ll be interesting to see I said on 100% foot the other night I think people might be shocked by the selection of this origin side I think it’s a fresh set of eyes over this I think they’ve lost a couple years in a row and I don’t think the Michael McGuire has any loyalty to any particular combination uh I know he’s spoken to and interviewed a lot of people um he’s been doing the rounds um I think this could be I think the first team could quite shock everybody okay just with I mean Edwards is we know he’s um got that amazing endurance he’s all over the field but he’s the greatest trainer I’ve ever seen in any era in any club he’s the greatest trainer I’ve ever seen he’s unbeatable well he looks unbeatable yeah he’s unbeatable anything to do with endurance and repeat efforts he’s unbeatable Origins repeated efforts isn’t it that’s what it’s all about oh he’s perfect for origin he’s absolutely perfect for origin you know but if they’re going to pick him pick him at fullback so you can see the best of him I just I just think it’ be unfair to pick him out of position on the wing I don’t I don’t I don’t think that would be fair to him could he handle it of course he could but I think it’s unfair I’m just thinking of Queen L to be terrified of a team with Tesco turbo and Edwards in it I don’t think Queens didn’t get too terrified about anything very true without Adam Reynolds brisban won’t make the top four curtains for brisban well they’re struggling a little bit at the not curtains you make the four You Can’t Win It H well that might be tested this year it’s going to happen eventually someone from outside the four is going to win it eventually so three months for for Reynolds so that gets him back s brings him right back for the finals they got too much talent in this side they’ll they’ll they could hop on one leg and get to the eight I’m sure but they won’t want too many other injuries and they’ve started to get a few and now they just got too much talent no jo Madden this week to Young Josh Rogers who I think he’s had one shot at NRL previously uh you’ll see him on nine they got the trip to param param been belted up we’ll get Gus’s thoughts on round 10 shortly um I know how much you love talking origin Spencer Len’s back this week he’ll rock it into origin calculations in the next fortnite yes he could well do uh it goes against my selection policy uh in that everyone I pick even on the bench I want to be an 80-minute player and Spencer he’s never been been used in that he’s always been used as impact Off the Bench you know if you’re looking for someone impact Off the Bench then there’s none better than spenc lenu none whatsoever I think in game one last year they used to beat a pangy junior for that role they did um spenc can be quite Dynamic coming off the bench he can change the momentum of the game if you’re behind he can change it if you’re on top he just puts us puts him to the sword but if someone went down in the first minute and said Spencer you got to go 79 minutes mate um that would be different and he wouldn’t have a lot of football under his belt either but he’s he’s an impact player he’s he’ll graduate over time I think the intention is to train him up and get him to being a 50 60 Minute contributor and that’s pretty much where you want your your middle forwards your better middle forwards these days you’ve got the exceptions your pain harasses and Rian Campbell gillows Junior paos and those sort of like they could go 80 if they have to they choose not to do that with them obviously you don’t want to do that every week but they can if they have to well if har and yo are in a starting pack they’re 80-minute players if Jack roov is there he’s an 80-minute player yeah s yo can go for 3 days well that’s yes so even without sleep the that that’ be a tough ask but I suppose the point I’m making there is that you do have you could use an impact player if you have all those 80-minute men it it could well be a thought process yeah absolutely it could well be a thought process you South aren’t flush for middles this year no they’re not I mean the param boys aren’t going that great teams aren going that great the safi’s probably going a little bit better than they were but anyway so who who are our leading Sydney teams at the moment penri M rooster there you go they’re probably the two main teams Manley but they’ spilled their loles the other day didn’t they all KATU you’d give him a jumper I think so yeah I I look I think I think everyone’s going to be shocked that’s just my feeling saying so you know something I don’t know something you do I don’t what do you no I know I know I know nothing I I think you’ll be shocked I just that’s who he going to pick that’s going to shock everyone that’s it it’ll be a shock when it comes it’s always a shock yeah trust me he loves Cameron McKinnis I know that shock me um I mean this is a this is a thanksgiv question but the Warriors sharks are G good not big Tommy hazeldon never know you’re like in a big city not going to get a start is he Tommy lucky be big city they got enough TR scorers he’s going good your man Tommy Tommy from gin Tommy he’s my new Keith Galloway oh well just without the hair yeah big Tommy has he been how long’s he been Bor for I me he’s been M with his son for for quite a while yeah how old was he when he was coming to your house he was losing it pretty young was he yeah I think he could grow some if he wanted to oh well like Matt Lodge I think he chooses chooses that he’s a big big boy he’s a monster of a boy moves good though yeah he does yeah good good try on the weekend stormed onto the ball big Tommy he’s got a cult following down there he’s my new Keith Galloway um yes Galloway what a champion I get goosebumps every time I think about it he listens to this podcast so because he knows how much you love him yeah the Warriors de Miss Luke meta yes they do and they’re also missing Shawn Johnson now Shawn’s not training at the moment and hasn’t for some time he’s got a um an injury that they’ve got to Monitor and get him through he gets through to a little bit of a captain’s run and bit of game so they’re not they’re not getting the Reps into him and you know if your halfback is not there at training all week but he’s there on the weekends you know it’s good to have him there but they sort of not getting and they just they’re touch off the pace compared they were last year aren’t they they just they’ve had some other injuries but um it’s quite a concern for them at the moment and and now that they’ve lost a few and sort of got back in the rck um if they were going to take time to rest Johnson they probably should have done it early in the year and get 100% right now it’s hard to rest him when you’re not winning um to get it right but you I still think I still think they’re a top eight side I think that they’ll find a way to win the games do you you you win two or three games in this competition in a row you Leap Frog a lot of teams and the Warriors will do that at some stage three wins for the year they’re only and remembering too that during origin they don’t have they’re not disrupted like other sides so one competition Point since round four they’ve had yeah um with the Achilles they’re funny injuries aren’t they like you annoying can you can you get can you can it improve with rest because they they’re pretty they’re they’re tenuous injuries aren’t they yeah they’re the sort of injury they’re reluctant to um or my understanding and I’m keep saying I haven’t got a medical degree but you kind of you pick up things over the years they they’re the sort of ones that they don’t depending where it is and where the Pain’s coming from where the situation is is they’re ones they don’t like like to inject because that actually makes it weaker and if you’re having if you’ve got a tendonitis if you’ve got tendons if you get pain in tendons and particularly your big ones like your Achilles and your patella tendon is another one that footballers have trouble with um if you get tendon issues and you get pain it’s a it’s a warning you need to back off M um because it means you are susceptible to that type of injury uh I learned a lot about this talking to um the boy at the roosters Conor Watson when we’re doing Medicals on him um and he was coming off a patella tendon injury and um uh the doctor explained about some people genetically it’s nothing it’s not a weakness it’s just a genetic condition they have that if they get pain in tendons it’s a warning that something’s about to happen so Conor Connor Watson I believe was having pain in his tendon for 12 months and then it eventually went bang and just just you know ruptured and it was a long process to get back um but once they get back they come back stronger so they need to be careful with Shawn Johnson they really do and that’s they’re taking that care obviously they’re nursing him through but it’s not ideal in preparation and training for the team and they’re just a little bit off the pace and he’s probably not as explosive as he has been and but I mean they’re still looking to sign him again I think he’s he’s still looking to go around again so hopefully it fixes itself in time let’s hope for all the Warriors fans we got a big contingent of supporters on this podcast well that were a fairy tale story last year weren’t they well they might be it don’t Rite them off uh Titans look almost certain to lose David feda but Gus is he likely to move into the front row at a new club no no no no no I don’t think so I don’t think so a club football level he would probably survive as a lock forward or a middle forward you could play him in short but I suppose but he’s Dynamic on the edge uh um the clubs most likely at the moment Panthers roer and dragon are all looking at him and it’s kind of funny I don’t know what the roers are thinking there they got so much depth in all those positions they got so many young players coming through I’m not sure I know he’s a bright shiny thing and that’s what they like to have um I can see I can certainly see a use for him at in the panther side probably would penrith do with their pack I think they I think a blackl Faida would um be the ultimate replacement for a black like kick out who they lost a couple of years ago uh I think you know probably on that left Edge I think that’s his strength at at uh at Club level um so they push Martin up to prop maybe they think Ro Mar plays right side um yeah I don’t think front row that I don’t think they’ve got a shortage I know they’ve lost Fisher Harris but they have got young fellas coming through or Martin can easily play in the middle um you the middle forward role these days is a little different um and we’re seeing a little bit more with the the the likes of a Ruben Cotter who wasn’t normally seen as a front row forward but now he’s one of the more Dynamic ones in the competition and um even Bulldogs this year like we’re we’re obviously short on what you would call Natural front rowers but um you know through great coaching and and and the way they’ve been used are able to accommodate and and make and make way there’s always a place for a great front rower um but um it’s a position that sometimes you can cover for periods of time it wears on you after a time if you don’t have U you know three or four of those big boers that can do it but there are more than one way to play the game yeah y i just excited from a a footy Fan’s perspective the thought of feder in a club like a penth or roosters he I think it’s probably fair to say we haven’t got to the bottom of his talent like if he was to go into one of systems he could just realize all of his ability no way yeah yeah I mean I remember 100% footy at the time questioning the deal that he that he went to the Titans under I thought that I didn’t think that deal was going to help him or the Titans at that time I understand now clubs they make decisions looking for quick flexes and he’s obviously a talented player and but I think I don’t think it did him any favors with all that money and all that expectation early in his career I just don’t think it did and um you know now really now he’s only now ready to to go on with he’s he hasn’t reached the peak of his career yet I think he’s a good buy for someone at the moment I think he but to just what position he plays and how much reprogramming you got to have and how you’re going to use him he’s a weapon Club level if he plays at the best of his ability he’s a match winner every week of the year but um titon sort of haven’t found that from him in recent times and he went he’s he’s like on the way anyway he’s playing good yeah he’s playing played in the middle at the back part of last week’s game and went good he’s playing good right at the moment and um that coincides with him having to make a decision this week on tomorrow isn’t it is that what they say weird it’s weird what’s he got to take up an option by tomorrow or something yeah by Thursday and the option is for an extraordinary pound of money I mean it’s it’s big money that he’s got the option at the tit I think I actually spoke to his manager last week and just in passing said you know what what what’s doing there and he said uh if it was about money he’d be at the Titans Okay so maybe he’s sort of come around to your thinking a little bit I don’t know I don’t know what he he might stay the Titans well he may he may I don’t know and and maybe their form in recent weeks is got him feeling better about it because no doubt this would have been on his mind during the early rounds where they were getting blasted and and losing a lot of games but the last three games they shouldn’t really won their last three games they should have won their last three games been much more formidable yeah that didn’t they and Tino didn’t they resign when the coach changed they had a clause around the coach change which then they negotiated this apparently right so and I believe Tino has options in his favor all the way through his deal as well so geez yeah all all power to the players well I I I can never understand why clubs give players options in contracts I I just don’t understand that you either sign for us or you don’t well they youate certainty with salary cap and stuff like particularly when you’re talking to Marquee player like for feder well you know let let’s say I sign you up for a contract right and I sign you up for uh 300,000 350,000 400,000 and I’ll give you an option in your favor for 500,000 in the fourth year I’ll be taking that thanks but the only reason you’ll be taking that option up in the fourth year is if you’re not worth the money if you’re worth more than that you’re not taking up that option so there is only downside for the club to give an option in favor of a player I I can see no upside at all in giving a player an option on his contract yeah I can see incentive for the club to have an option on his contract so if I on the very rare rare occasions where I would have an option for a player it might be as an incentive to CH was if I go good and they take me up that’s the money I can earn yeah you um uh I very very rarely have options in contracts but to give a play an option I just don’t understand that I and I’m just sort of some of some of some of them have um you know if you’ve asked a fellow to move country if he’s had to come out from the UK or he’s come over from New Zealand or he’s come from Queens some of them want the option on compassionate grounds you know whatever but that’s just an agreement between whatever but it it and someh have it didn’t you know like like we’ve got some going around the league where there are handshake deals between clubs and that you know if you resign that player then my pathway is blocked you know I I need to go somewhere else if they’re a specialist position like a fullback or a halfback or that sort of thing you know there are all sorts of things that managers are trying to work into deals that I try to avoid I don’t I don’t want them you you commit to us you commit that’s as simple as that well I can only imagine it’s it’s because the Titans have been so desperate to land a couple of big napes well giv them what they want maybe at the time maybe at the time and I don’t know what the or how the contract was structured but maybe at the time the Titans were forced into that to get him to stay then I reck that might have been it yeah maybe he had an out clause at that time with the change in coaching and said I’m leaving but if I stay these are the deals and and sometimes you’re forced into that you know and I you know and if they lose him I think it’s going to be a real pity because they’ve spent a lot of money on him in his time there they took a big gamble to do it and and it’s it’ll be really disappointing for them if they don’t see the best of him and and they lose him well I’d imagine by and Ally lose him to the two top yeah that’s that’s Panthers and roosters can suddenly go and buy this team from from a team this is we’ve sort of talked a little bit about this in recent weeks this is 100% this is the salary cap supposed to equalize Talent you know that was the overarching yeah aim of it but the two leading club or two of the leading clubs in going by a marquee player for a team it’s last yeah now In fairness to Panthers their argument is well look at what we’ve lost no doubt you know corus kick and all that you know we’re about to lose white so you know um the program has to to build from within and keep bringing younger fellas in but it gets to a point where we suddenly we’ve got a lot of money to spend and maybe this Marquee F can make the difference to us a lot of the roosters you know people talk about roosters buy Marquee players but a lot of the players came to them as teenagers which gave them value in the salary cap so that when they wanted to coopa croc or they wanted the sunny Bill Williams or they wanted the James Sesco they could go out and blow everyone out of the water and do it and now they’ve got Su they’ve got Manu they’ve got players leaving Jared we HRI is retiring Luke Keri is retiring well K is is the obvious one in the last couple of week Angus kryon was on the way out now it looks like they might keep him he’s he’s back playing really well so um you know it’s the market is the strangest I’ve ever seen it in all my time and and that’s been exacerbated by the 17th team coming in in the Dolphins and the fact that the gramers announced we could be an 18th team or 20th team in in the next four or five years so all power was with the managers and the players so I you know I can understand how probably the Titans were backed into doing that but it seems very disruptive and very strange that you know anyway by this Thursday he’s going to tell them whether he’s staying or going and he’s got a couple of really high-profile options to go forward now there’s there’s the dragons who are you know they’re having a better season this year but have been down the bottom for a couple of years I mean they’re in for him but they’re battling with Panthers and Roost well the rooster doesn’t often lose gust does it not many come back from the rooster Dave apparently David ffe his partner’s family live at glenore Park David ffe his partner’s family live at glenore Park she’s a player she’s an nrlw player penth don’t have an nlw team no I I’ll yeah I think the best fit is probably Panther for him I think that’s what I think but um um The Roosters obviously have a plan and the dragons would love to land somebody but there’s nothing in the system that helps the dragons in that position it’s very very very hard when well they’ have to they’d have to come in well over what the other two clubs are going to offer him financially aren’t they which sus up your salary cap and if he’s injured it’s a big hole in your salary cap but then if it’s about money he might stay at the Gold Coast the system is not perfect Matthew no I’ve said this a number of times nothing’s perfect G nothing’s perfect hey uh what about or origin time to talk origin you ready no we’re not talking origin women’s origin it’s next week oh okay drama drama what’s happened Knights Premiership winning halfback Jesse southw is among a number of players dropped from the New South Wales team for game one of the origin Series in Brisbane next Thursday how South who made origin Debo last year was part of the New South Wales team that fell short of retaining the shield in the two game series before she helped Le Newcastle to victory in the nrlw Premiership last year Sky bl’s coach Kylie Hilda has instead opted for a more experienced halfback with eels number seven Rachel Pearson named alongside Corbin Baxter now Corbin obviously one of the more recognizable faces in women’s rby league she’s returning to the origin arena for the first time since giving birth early last year and she has played number six a handful of times including for New South Wales but she is regularly a fullback as we know uh for her club team the roosters and uh in addition to Jesse being left out Hannah souths being left out as well well the depth of talent in the women’s game is increasing all the time and I’m learning more and more about it now because the Bulldogs we have an nrlw license for next year we’ve run a a Pathways program coming through and it’s strange because we we run Pathways programs for the 17 and uh 1 and 19s in the women’s um Lisa fala and tasal cup but they all go off to play with other clubs in nrlw or or Harvey Norman competitions they’re different competitions Harvey Norman’s an open Age competition will’ll have a team in the competition this year we actually played in the Grand Final last year um but then they go off to play with other teams for nrlw um so right between now and mid next year the Bulldogs need to put together a top 24 women’s program for the nrlw competition is that your job uh i’ got people who do that Matt I don’t do anything I’ve got people who do everything really yeah handmaidens yeah uh here’s the Blues team Emma tonado fullback Jamie Chapman Tiana penitani the gun sergis and Kelly Baxter and Pearson like of said Millie Elliot Millie Bo Olivia Higgins cin Johnston then Yasmin Clydesdale KZ apps key Davis playing lock then Taylor fuo Olivia kernick Grace cemp Sarah Tonga tii jakay Whitfield Kira dib where’s um where’s samala she injured don’t know sign of the times going to leave her out yeah know you’re not leaving her out she must be hurt we’re going to I’m going to told you there’d be shocks you’re manages pick this one too I’ve told you there’d be shocks uh women’s origin baby live and free uh I don’t think they’ve named the Queensland team yet they named the squad but it is as you’d expect and we spoke to Ali Brin Shaw last week it’s a it’s an a jam a team jam-pack with Talent Live and free on nine from suncorp Stadium next Thursday uh you can see it on nine now as well and if you want to get a ticket you should go nrl.com tickets first of three games looking forward to it absolutely Heats of ask us questions um Johnny wants to know is it possible to make long-term Changes in Attitude mid-season or does it require a whole preseason to get the attitude right the Cowboys as one example of a team that can’t seem to turn around their attitude and effort areas midseason um attitude and attitude control is an ongoing process it’s it never ends it never ever ends and you get better at as it the first whether you go I’m not quite sure um if the question is making a statement or it’s it’s actually asking a question he’s sort of given this opinion on it Johnny um I don’t think the Cowboys have an attitude problem I I really don’t I might see real effort those they’re they’re giving a lot of effort in what they’re doing their effort might be in some of the important areas around defense but certainly there’s no more um enterprising attacking side they’ve got plenty of points in them they’re just not getting it’s hard at the moment you know yeah but but I suppose I think what he might be getting at is that they they scored two tries against the Dolphins on the weekend before the Dolphins had even touch the ball MH and then as soon as the Dolphins got the ball they went up and scored two tries well that’s what I’m saying you know they’re they’re you know their effort their effort is coming into the attacking part of the game and defensively they’re not quite as in tune as what you know and whe then that can be confidence it can be belief it can be changes in combinations it could be a number it could be just because the opposition teams are good like points do go with possession in this game doesn’t matter who’s playing there only a handful of teams like you your Panthers and those sort of teams that can withstand long periods of uh a defensive work um you know to still get a result that’s that’s a hard the defense is a hard part of the game um but if you looked at the Cowboys and you said are they an attacking team or a defensive team well overwhelmingly they’re an attacking team they’ve just got this belief that if you score four we’ll score five that’s for them yeah well they’re up and down aren’t they as are a lot of teams up and down and the better teams are defensively very very strong your sharks and your storm and your your Panthers and roosters on their day they’re defensively strong we’ve talked a little bit about this but I’m I’m fascinated to see how Kella goes through the next month with all the the hard opposition they face they could come out the other side Premiership favorites they can’t be they can’t be any better prepared for it they cannot not be any better preferred you know they probably played the the lower half of the draw in the first few weeks um then they had that tester in difficult conditions at Shark Park on the weekend against the dragons who were capable of beating them and you know they big bully team the dragons they they stand over you and uh it was close for long periods but the Sharks found a way to win and that’ll give them a great deal of confidence because um yeah they were down at halftime and they ran into the wind it took a lot of energy out of them but they found a way they grafted their way to a victory and that will stand them in good stead now to take on you know the Storm and The Roosters and the Panthers and and I think they got paramet and the Broncos so they play for the top four sides in the next five rounds I can’t believe you can remember that you remember the Sharks playing next five weeks you’re a freak I can’t remember he’s playing this week it’s my job baby how good was it to see in this professional era of Rabia League there’s still room for like your local you know for every all Hands-On deck what about Dino Mesa went down to Bunnings and bought a pump to get the water off the ground in the weekend Bunnings at Teran Point yeah they got everything at Bunnings at Teran point I go there my M sends me down there regularly what do you come back with everything else but she said I usually come around with the wrong stuff I walk in there’s there’s usually a very nice girl standing on the front desk and I say where’s this where’s that she says I’ll 49 I 53 otherwise I’d be looking forever I wouldn’t know where anything was I’m the least do-it-yourself black in the world I can’t use a screwdriver I don’t I don’t care really no get someone to do it be nice I used to love mowing my lawn and love mowing the lawn and doing the edges that was one t I used to I used to once a week I’d do the yard you know and sweep off all the leaves and hose everything down and I like gning in the past I was just going to ask you that you like you like the high pressure washer I like the high pressure washer yeah I like all that um getting a bit old now and it gets a bit cold during the winter but you get great satisfaction out of the high pressure washer was one of my dad’s great Joys was mowing the Lawns our when we were growing up our Lawns were like Dad was a golfer yeah so our La were like golf greens really yeah cooch yeah we had cooch Lawns and spirit level spirit level level and was all St up and he he beautiful cooch grass and he had look after the cooch he had the professional I think he stole him from some U Golf Club i’ say i’ say someone someone L him the mowers and he never gave them back oh yeah never thought about getting a little pting green put in your place we had a pting green at home did you yeah there there synthetic ones now yeah that’s what I me have you thought about getting one of them I’ve got a lawn area at home and I wanted to make it artificial with putting greens and holes and my Ms overall she doesn’t have to say much she just gives you that look I’m she must need to work on a putting I’m not going back there again very I want to get one of those driving Nets at home or one of those simulators M you got a you got a theater room why wouldn’t you have one it’s exactly what you need can’t play golf in the theater but you can just pull the you can pull the screen down or the net and we get your track man I sit and watch you on Friday night football with Campbell Graham out for a minimum 18 rounds with souths able to add a player to their top 30 this season to cover for him asks Brian yeah so um souths are in a bit of a hole at the moment last week they were actually um contacting clubs around potential loan systems because they didn’t have or were scared that they wouldn’t even have 1 fit players for this weekend’s round so um I know that there were some discussions around I think they’ve managed to put a team on the field this week but and we were in a similar position last year with the Bulldogs and um during Co teams were like that I think there should be loan systems and I think you should be able to give players out there’s plenty of young players you’d like to see playing NRL for their advancement even if they can’t get a run with you um I’m sure plenty of clubs would have been in a position to lend them players I’m not sure whether they need to go that far yes is Latrell back this week I think he’s playing gamut shibasaki came down from the cor L cup yeah let’s hope that they um let’s hope that they uh they get out of this because it’s a tough period we’ve all been through it and South Sydney having their turn at the moment um Archie wants to know if touch tag and rugby league NES could be utilized more to grow the game well it is it is the recreational forms of the game are very important they’re very important for recreational sport they’re very important for people who love rugby league you don’t want the tackle variety there’s a there’s a brand of our our sport for everyone um we have wheelchair rugby league we have you know mixed rugby league we have uh the tag I love the Oz tag I think the Oz tag is very good I thought the game should have bought ozag many many years ago and put its brand on it and made it part of the the process I think ozag could be an Olympic sport I think it would be the way to sell the game around the world because anyone anywhere can play ozag didn’t Bill harrian invent that no black called Perry hadig and the black called Greg malan I played with Greg back in the 80s at Canterbury Bill harrian works for them I think Bill har is the CEO now of oag right um massive sport huge participation massive Sport and and it grew with no advertising no sponsorship no marketing no anything it’s just been Word of Mouth over the years and all my kids have played it and we’ve been to they they’ve got their own world cup they’ve got their own Interstate series I’ve been with the kids to all those sort of things boys and girls and um you know I was I was Keen for the rugby league to buy the Oz tag and they formed an association with touch football which is a different sort of sport touch football is different to tag there is a distinct difference between them and I think it’s the growth game for the women’s rugby league I think that’s more and more girls now being transitioned out of these recreational forms of the game because not all the girls play The Tackle form of the game you that’s right up until a certain age and they can’t cope with it up until a certain certain age and same with some boys um the famous examples I think with Shawn Johnson and Benji Mar were brilliant touch football players as kids um and transition into the tackle game um so yeah I would I would love to have have our brand on the Oz tag brand and I think it could be used and I think potentially as a game it’s it’s the brand that could sell the game worldwide if you wanted to go into Asia and my old friend who did deep from we passed away years ago Paul Bron always thought that tag football was the way into the ocean Market into um you know absolutely bringing them into the code in a way that they could easily understand easily adapt and easily compete is the important part but I think ozag is the way to sell the game to the world everywhere I think ozag could be an Olympic sport I do know that rugby were keen on ozag at one stage as I pathway through to International sevens football Olympic sevens football um and that was the thinking of oag that there’s their their game is the perfect pathway um touch football I’ll argue that probably they are but touch football’s a different type of game a different type of athlete to the o tag which is um yeah let’s a look at what I think’s a pretty engaging round of footy this one starting tomorrow night Thursday night Dolphins at sunor hosting Manley they’re just so hard to beat Wayne Bennett Dolphins aren’t they so hard to beat um I’ll just try and find the team news here a huge boost for Wayne Bennett’s team with Herby farnworth back from a shoulder injury Kenny bromich is also back on Deck um and Tessy knew is out with an ankle injury benra boic comes back for Manley Ethan bulmore to the bench Nathan Brown drops out because of a hip flexor injur now the big loss for them no Lin kroo so they’ve brought onto the bench the Young Gun number nine Gordon Chan Tong and starting in the number nine is kle Lorton yeah big game it is a big game and the dolphin they’re in good form they they you know they have their moments and they take their moments they take their chances they’ve got great athleticism out wide and creativity with that young heart and um Jeremy Marshall King directec him around the middle of the field their forwards are willing um manly I just can’t get over what happened to them last week I just don’t know I didn’t see that second half coming they just kind of got themselves in a bit of a rut and couldn’t get themselves out of it I did the same thing against the dragons earlier in the year yeah I imagine that’ll be a wakeup call to them but you know the dolphin the sun Corp Stadium Thursday night wow that’s that’s a real danger game um dolphin dolphin dolphin at sunor all right I guess you’ll find out where the doggies are at up against penth at Blue bet Stadium 6:00 on Friday evening obviously Nathan clear’s been named to come back for the Panthers and you got the same 17 hey can I just say just Josh Karan I love Josh Karin what a competitor he’s a good be a to place in a blues jumpering maybe I met him when I was did me short stand at the Warriors and um he looked like a bulldog then mhm all right you spent Bulldogs here we get no respect you spelled it wrong I did I didn’t do that yeah well we got no respect who did that him Jordan did he did he get the dragons right no respect he get the dragons right oh what about that I hope they replaced the jumper for him now the injury ravage par matter up against Brisbane in Friday night footy they are at home however at combank youngster Blaze L he wears the number one with Clint gson gone sha Russell comes in um for Morgan Harper Bryce cart rides back from a rib injury but no Moses no gotho no chance I don’t know I really like Blaze toongi I’ve been watching him for years I really like him as he’s going to he’s going to establish himself into a very good first grade player but they’ve lost their Rudder and they’ve lost their their Energizer I mean Clint gson is their Energizer anything good that’s been happening for paramedic CL gutherson is around it Bronco you know obviously got their difficulties too but I would favor them to beat the eel on Friday night okay as I mentioned Josh Rogers comes in to take over from Adam Reynolds in the number seven jumper West Tigers Newcastle scul Park Tamworth yep uh tiger tiger tiger Jaden Sullivan’s in as and sees it suspended uh corus s Beckle was a bow chowing of course from from the West tigers with the but no RP corus out Tyson Brazil returns Jacob saiti returns for Newcastle tigers are going a lot better than their position on the ladder and um they’re an awkward side to play um every now and then they get down on themselves a little bit if the winds aren’t coming and they’ve struggled to get some winds together I thought they they had Panthers rocking at Brookville at up at be there a few weeks ago and they’ve been in games and just haven’t been able to nail it um and the Knights are on a little a little bit of a surge now after even though Kal and pong is out and everyone was Doom and Gloom they’ve won a couple straights since then and I think Tyson frelle back in the Sid’s a big in um they are playing at Scully Park in tenorth which is a beautiful area of New South Wales lovely area tenorth spent a bit of time up in tenorth I love you in tenorth yeah and it’s um it’s a bulldog town tenorth I reckon it was a warrior town during cover wasn’t it a bulldog town a lot of bulldog fans up there in tenorth got a good young got a very good young player from t about to make e Deo in the next few weeks who’s that uh I can’t tell you too much well well I could find it out I just going have a look why don’t you tell me who it is saving the trouble can go do your research all right uh here tipping uh night dragons souths dragons all sweet pretty much well they’ve got their backline that they started with back intact and luchano is on an extended bench now the TRS back as We Know Fair income Murray gray Hawkins all out Dion now TPA I think we say that Dion ta UPA tala makes his NRL to at halfback gamit shibasaki’s come come down from Townsville to play on the wing havil is at lock Matt French makes a too Off the Bench if you got a South jumper put it on turn up you have a chance of getting a game dragon okay how good’s this game on Saturday night Melbourne Sharkies down at Amy Park Jerome Hughes is out Gus so’s papy so far Longo at fullback and Tyron wishart will play halfback and one change for the league leading konala with Royce hunt coming in for Toby Rudolph and Teague Wilton is good to go after coping the early guilty play oh konala this is for the first of their big test but they’ve got a pretty much a full strength team shark that’s it shark they’ve been waiting for this right they’ve been waiting for this rooster Warrior rooster JW is 300th mhm uh and then Sunday 4:00 this is interesting isn’t it seabus super Stadium once again je brimson was good last week yes he was zipping all over the place um Chad town then comes back in missed last week but they of course they sorry that they did lose they lost Boyd early in the game and Rand went to 5/8 and that’s the way they’re going to line up again yeah I’m going to go with Titan to beat Cowboys I think they’ve been deserving of a bit better the last few weeks they haven’t got the wins but they’ve been in the fight and Cowboys are leaking a few points they got them at home it’s a game they have to win they just whatever it takes they’ve just got to get it done I think Desi will get them up so let me see what did I say there I said dolphin to beat Seagle did I say that yeah um Bronco to beat eel Knight to beat tiger Dragon to beat rabbit shark to beat storm rer to beat Warrior Titan to beat Cowboys not confident tough round it is tough round Thursday night footy live and free here from suncorp Friday night footy live and free from combank Sunday footy live and free Sydney v Penrith GF
Opening with the castle faaarrr out what a great podcast great job Gus and Matt
0:44 "Fall" Matthew ๐
Love Gus talking up the Doggies , not bias at all ๐
Ya mean Gold Coast Chargers Gus
Thompsons a joke
I heard Dennis Denuto is now a QC. Better give him a call Gus.
You da man Gus you should be guest host of Billy Slater podcast when hes playing origin LOL go doggies
Love how Gus is asked what he likes at the Bulldogs, straight away the setup and pathways. Who's in charge of that? He is. He was talking about first grade side but straight to his job. Love it.
Why did Gus not pick a side to in the panther v bulldog ???
I said Roosters will be in the GF after their Round 1 win over Brisbane in Vegas, that game really struck me, I hope they donโt because I donโt really like them, but this year I feel as if they are the team to beat and currently the most in form regardless of the current ladder position and the wins and losses.
Warriors are missing Metcalf and particularly Niukore
Win a few than 2 in a row against quality teams and I'll be impressed by my chooks. We have good depth, which comes from the 3 previous years when we were cained with injuries
Gusโs favourite topics. Dogs (understandable), Panthers and Roosters.
Doggies just need a decent half back!
Shamelessly brags for 5 mins then says " I don't like talking about the Dogs" can't make this sh*t up.
He said "maybe"
Warriors are done ,
HOW can roosters afford it with salary cap? Look at the roster… seriously.. I think there has to be some behind the scenes shenanigans going on?? Lets spread the talent better.
With the roosters an observation was the whole team clicked into the same gear recently and especially last week, now Brandon Smith wasn't dummy half so you'd expect some type of clunky (English dictionary) for dropped ball , mistimed passes, generally not at their best, with Watson at dummy half he only went for a scoot when needed, 2-3 times, knowing this would be the case whole team rolled at high speed, a &d. Coach Robinson has a good problem on his hands, moving Smith to the back row when fully fit, one thinks their season depends on it. Ex magpie fan…..
I think that no matter who you support and who makes the GF that unfortunately the game will be decided by who the bunker allows to win. I wish it was not the case, but as the weeks go bye, it seems like it is going to be the case.
your right Gus hay fever is commonly known and affect sufferers like myself in Spring. I'm still wearing my shorts here in New Zealand ๐. Love your show guys โค
Gus tell Mathew Thompson to calm down ๐๐
Roosters have the best squad depth in the competition, they can go all the way and win the competition only thing holding them back is their Halves. Sam Walker can be given free reign to run the show but sometimes like Walsh can overplay his hand. If he can limit that aspect of his game they will win the comp. Brisbane wont win it this year lock it in.
Roosters won't drop the effort like Brisbane did Radley and Crichton looking good
So Channel 9 have made it KNOWN that PENREF , STORM DOGGIES AND ROOSTERS are a protected species
Hey guys, love the show. Listen most weeks when driving home, at the gym or doing things around the house!
As a new fan from NZ.
I really like the recognition Gus gives New Zealand and his honesty on the situation.
Everytime , cant mat get his volumes right before the podcast
Keep up the good work boys. Plenty of fans here in NZ. Could listen to you guys talk footy all day. One of the highlights of the week, for me and the boys.
Gus "I repeat everything I say 4 times" Gould
Gus is spot on as usual. Oztag is played by expats in Asia just by word of mouth advertising, imagine if the NRL had any business sense in the 2000s era, it would've been a potential Olympic sport by now. Truth hurts NRL? Have to fine the man giving you free advice back then on business opportunities where you missed all of them.
Gus is one of the legends in the NRL world and i honestly hope he can pass all his info on to someone else in that world to continue his legacy in the future.
He actually seems to really care about the game and the clubs he has helped over the years while Investing a ton of his time & effort (probably most days of the week), seemingly far beyond what a lot would do. Actually knows – and has proven it – really invaluable info & strategies clubs can implement to become a better version of themselves, to build for the future and sustain it while not being afraid to call out the crap.
Would enjoy a quiet beer with him and to hear some of his stories hahaha – to me he has a Wayne Bennett like effect on clubs, gets the best out of them without over expecting – idk anything about how he does it but i imagine it starts with getting the basics, attitude and culture right, simple is better – build from the right foundations then the clubs can stand on their own.
Gus got all of his tips right! ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
I'm happy you tipped the chooks.
โค๏ธ๐๐
Its no councidence that Gus goes to a club, works his magic and suddenly they have years of depth to drawn on. Did it at the Chooks, then Panthers now the Doggies.
I wont complain if he makes his way through every club and helps the leagues future growth.
