three out of five holes or excuse me five out of six holes in a row he may bur Roy maoy this place seems to bring out the best it does we’re going to talk more about that he’s going to talk more about that in a moment the T of par five about as good as bow as he gets out there on this golf course and this one is a drivable Par Four but lots of danger water left bunkers tough pitches to the right he threaded the eye of the needle here up onto the front of the green but that left him 94 ft and 8 in away from home so he had his work cut out for him and he thre putut it to stay at five under par par five 15th after a free drop it’s third yeah it’s the green to the left nice pitch there able to take advantage of that scoring opportunity where he didn’t yet yesterday and then at the eighth yesterday hit driver off the back of this green today three-wood just short of it and a beautiful pitch not have been that an e that easy of a pitch give me the be good news late on a Friday night here in central they’re back on the course playing late for round number two trying to close things out before things get dark in Charlotte North Carolina Xander shley four shot at advantage over Roy maroy and Jason day all three of those guys have done and dusted their second round so with Rory maoy he’s the winningest player in Wells Fargo Championship history he’s won there three times just won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans with Shane Lowry when we look at this week through two rounds what are you seeing with this game well he’s missed some opportunities I mean he’s played some good golf and it’s good to see Rory back again hitting some great iron shots always drives it well but making some nice putts but the distance between he and Xander sh four shots uh he could have easily made up for with some great scoring opportunities go back to yesterday just to show you a couple of them again 356 to this hole he flies it into the green goes off the back so you know a tough spot doesn’t get it up and down for biry so that’s a nice scoring opportunity miss you could say it was just unlucky here at the 15th I I like to think he would like to have this one back again maybe this decision uh good scoring opportunity at the par five hits the lip doesn’t make par makes bogey so had a birdie opportunity you can say he lost two shots there so that’s two three shots ay yesterday and then today again there were a couple of U missed opportunities we saw the drive and the highlights onto the front of this scen he ran it by from 94 ft to 5T so uh a missed opportunity there although he had made some nice 5-footers to start the round at 10 and 11 so disappointing par at 14 and then again at the seventh after the par five missing the Fairway in the left uh Missing the green long and to the left this one straight down the hill had a little bit more giddy up in it not enough breaks so went by some 20 ft so that’s for good missed opportunities right there but you know when you talk about his dominance here three wins a second place finish you you know what gives you know as analyst we sit up here we try to dive into sometimes it’s just good to go to the horse you know and uh Todd Lewis did exactly that after the round if I’m driving the ball well I can take advantage of that more so on this golf course probably than any other course on tour um you know I can carry some of the dog legs I can carry some of the Fairway bunkers and um you know that gives me a a huge Advantage into some of these par fours so instead of you know hitting you know mid or long iron in I’m hitting you know short iron or wedges into some of the holes that uh the guys are hitting longer clubs on and on one hole it doesn’t make a difference but over the course of a week whenever you’re um able to take advantage of you know say 20 or 25 holes like that then you know that’s that’s where it makes a difference and this is what that huge Advantage looks like shot by shot by shot by shot here he is at the 15th it’s 330 yards past the bunker on the right 187 ball speed I can remember when getting up close to 180 was awesome uh almost 190 that one didn’t roll much but 332 certainly a big bite out of that par five forward to the 16th slight dog leg right it is 335 past the bunker on the right Rory misses this drive doesn’t like it but 187 ball speed will Air M that 335 bunker so 351 instead of being in the bunker or having some stress he’s got almost nothing left into this green here at the first the bucker on the left is 335 yards to get past it Rory 344 go forward to the seventh and dare I tell you how difficult or cool this shot was Johnson Wagner does it himself really comfortable t- shot downwind saw Tom Kim before him hit it right down the middle nice little recoil but he’s watching it anxiously and he just covered the bunker so if you know Johnson Wagner as well as we do in that and he just covered the bunker now that’s Johnson Wagner’s home golf course so he would well know how ludicrous it is that you could cover that left bunker some 33 we asked by the way we asked Johnson Wagner to go out and replicate that shot but it turns out there wasn’t a forward enough te for him to do it so we’re going to have to wait on that one but can’t do that to the man you’re goingon to have to see him face to face next week three 341 that was I mean again most people would be in the left bunker with stress coming over the water but Rory able to carry those bunkers he’s taking it to another level quickly how much Freedom do you think that gives Rory well a lot you know when you look at the way Tiger Woods dominated uh at Tory Pines and you go back and look at it uh the bunkers at one you know you know the corner at two uh around the corner at uh six around the corner at seven you know tiger could just even if he because tiger won all those tournaments not from the middle of the Fairway and he kind of won Bay Hill the same way he could cut the corners and carry the bunkers so I almost look at this golf course the same way tiger would play Tory Pines or Bay Hill could cut the corner could carry the dog legs so you know as much as people love to uh criticize the distance that that most players or you know so many players hit the golf ball uh there’s there’s data to suggest that it’s not that important but when you can hit it as straight as Rory does of course it’s a huge advantage and you can go back to you know the early days of who’s won the V trophy with few exceptions people who dominate in the game of golf have been the longest hitters or amongst the longest hitters uh you know Lee trino might be one of those exceptions of course and Nick FDO but by and large Sam sne Ben Hogan Bobby Jones Jack Nicholas Arnold Palmer Tom Watson civie B steros Greg Norman Tiger Woods Phil Mickelson there it’s that’s nothing new if you hit it nine miles with some degree of accuracy well you’ve got a huge advantage and if you get on the right Golf Course where the bunkers are placed for mere mortals uh and you have dog legs and you can carry them it’s a huge advantage
