so if you’re watching this video there’s a distinct possibility that you’re one of those golfers who gets driver away and you’ve got his second shot with three wood or fivewood you feel like you’ve done all the hard work but then disaster strikes we top it fat it thin it and I’ll be honest for most Club golfers I think the Fairway woods and hybrids are probably the scoring clubs because if they don’t hit those well it really makes the rest of the whole an uphill battle so I’ve got three wood and fivewood I’m going to talk talk about what you do most importantly what you need to do to start hitting these better than you’ve ever done in the past so we’re going to start with fivewood cuz I think most golfers would agree that that little bit of extra loft there just inspires a bit of confidence they can see a bit of the club face and it feels like the ball’s going to go in the air but unfortunately they go right I’m going to get that ball forward I’m going to get the ball in the air and there’s that top that’s a good one probably rolled out 50 yards in front of me but just really poor contact hitting the top catching way behind or maybe somewhere in between thinning it and maybe the very rare one that they flush is just a massive slice so the one phrase that I never ever want to hear from you guys again is that you’re going to try and sweep your Fairway Woods away please don’t ever do that now let me explain so I think most golfers are very aware that with their irons they want to hit down on the golf pole with driver they want to hit up on the ball and fway W are somewhere in between I would say no we need the club whenever the ball’s on the ground to be traveling down so we hit ball and then ground so we need the low point of the golf swing to be ahead of the golf ball and I just want you to think about this that club’s going to work up down reach its low point and then travel back up but what a lot of golfers struggle with is is they move the ball forward and their concept is trying to get the ball in the air so when they swing that low Point’s going to be back here now that can be great with driver when the ball’s up in the air but if we miss the ground we’re going to top it at best than it or we’re going to catch the ground and it’s that fat one that goes nowhere particularly in the UK at the moment so the first change we’re going to make is we’re going to move the ball position and I’m I’m going to say here bit bit of a random guess a lot of golfers tend to hit the Rons quite high and not as far as they’d like so they’re not golfers who get the low point a huge distance in front of the ball so we’re only going to move the ball position an inch forward in our stance and we’re going to set the weight just slightly more onto that left side and then all you’re going to do is as you start your down swing shift towards a Target and hopefully you’re going to stand up and strike one like that just turning over a bit more than I would have liked but we see on trackman low Point 2.2 inches ahead clubs travel down 2.6 degrees launching at 13 carrying at 226 and rolling out 243 now I know you might say perfect did it first time and I’m just going to do that every time if we’re being more realistic we’re probably not going to get that first go so what I do see with golfers is the more they work on that you’ll generally improve your strike straight away but there is one other little danger that we can get and it can be that golf has set up as I’ve discussed they put a good swing on it and they actually get this shot it’s really poor strike I know it’s looking like out the middle of the club phase but low points ahead there a massive drop off on distance and accuracy and even though my low point was ahead of the ball there actually hit the ground first and the reason being the height that the low point was was too low into the ground so that as I’ve come back I’ve caught the ground first and contined deep into the ground on the grass that would have been a very big very deep divot so the little moving part that golf has miss out on is that once they’ve set well and they start that downswing we actually lose a little bit of height so we need to get that lead hip and Lead leg starting to straighten that gets the lead side moving up gets the handle of the club moving up and just raises the bottom of the golf swing enough so that we’re going to touch ball and then ground maybe just ball and then grass but it’ll stop us crashing into the ground I’ve got a number of clients that have struggled with this and the first worry when they hit the ground first is they think the low Point’s behind so then they end up moving more and more catching the ball too early in the swing and getting a Big Slice on that so we going to get that as a little feel in the practice ring and you could see I touched the mat ahead but didn’t get a huge amount of contact with the mat so that would be perfect delivery now I’m probably like a lot of golfers that the practice swing always feels great and there’s no ball there so there’s no distraction but I’m going to focus with fivewood and try to put the same swing on it and let the ball just get in the way felt great maybe just a smidge low off the face but low Point 3 in ahead clubs traveled down 3.4 de launched a little bit lower cuz a strike at 10 1 half and carry it just under 220 and rolling out 231 so that was good definitely for me there low point was great but maybe wasn’t just quite into the mat enough and that just cost me a few yards we’re going to go one more with fivewood get that pressure on that left side really focus on making a good movement again felt lovely strike again maybe just a smidge low in the face if I’m being picky but low points good angle of attacks good and distance is very consistent so that moves me on to three-wood which I think for a lot of golfers is the one they really struggle with on the ground and it’s where the low Point gets even worse and they just I mean you can comment below and let me know what disasters you have with rewood but I’m going to keep the ball position the same for now with me and I’m going to keep the swing thought the same and if I do everything the same the ball’s going to just launch a little bit lower and then potentially go a little bit further so so let’s get set Pall just slightly forward of Center felt a solid one again maybe a little bit low off the face but 2.1 in ahead launching at 12° 226 carry and 237 total now this is definitely the one for me where I still don’t 100% trust it so I’ve really got to make make sure that when I do that practice swing I’d like to feel a bit more into the mat for me there that’s the one as strange as it sounds if you can get a little bit more into the mat and the club comes back a bit more this way you actually catch slightly higher up the face which has got a little bit more Loft on it which will launch a bit higher carry a bit further give me a bit more total so it’s kind of a bit counterintuitive that to hit the ball further with three wood and fivewood you almost want to feel like you’re presenting less Loft even though in fact you will present more Loft but I could live with that as kind of one that wasn’t perfect with three-wood so I’m going to get up one more good swing that felt better so a little higher up the face low Point wasn’t quite as far forward which will have helped launched at 13.2 carried at 238 total at 253 and that’s very close to kind of as good as I get with three would I can swing a little bit quicker but that’s fine now let’s say you’ve worked through the video with me and please feel free to comment below and I’ll get back to as many people as I can you might say I hit my seven wood and my fivewood fantastic but I don’t really see any benefit to 3w in fact it maybe goes shorter than fivewood now that could be a lack of speed from you and this is where you should get equipment in the bag that suits you so if I were to swing slower even doing what I’ve discussed we can see there much slower great strike fantastic low point but launching very low carrying 103 and rolling out 154 and that’s just simply that as I hit the ball with that Loft at that speed the ball launches low and there’s not enough Back Spin on the ball to keep it in the air so if you’re somebody who rips three-wood but doesn’t hit it anywhere so strikes good get the five wood going maybe even put seven wood in the bag but keep delivering the club well get the low Point ahead and make sure you’re not crashing into the ground but I never ever want to hear you talking about sweeping your Fairway woods again just do what I’ve said and start ripping all those Fairway Woods from the ground
